Deleted File Problem

Q: Deleted File Problem

Hello there,

I have got a dell mini 9 inspiron with a very small hard drive around 8gb. I am running windows xp on service pack 2. I have been onto windows site to try and get service pack 3 but keep getting held up by windows validation all though I have a genuine copy of xp.

The problem is as follows:

When I delete a file or programme it takes up even more free space on the hard drive. It is as though the file is not being deleted. I have tried to uninstall and re install the recycle bin but that has not worked.

As you can imagine due to only having such a small hard drive it is quite a problem.

I hope that someone can help me out.

Thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

Looking through my Document File "Alpha Address List"I accidently replaced the file with a Blank File of the same name . When I tried to open it there was nothing in there. I looked in the Recycle bin there were no files in there at all. Where had it gone ? How could I find it and restore it?

I believe I made a grave error next as I went into the Recovery Programme and picked a recovery point which was 4 or 5 days back from the day my "Alpha Address List" file went missing. When the restore had been completed I looked at the "Alpha Address File" and just a blank copy of that was there.

I realise now that all the recovery programme did was restore the Windows System Files and not the Office 10 personal document "doc" files.

It may be a lost cause now but is there any way I can retrieve the "Alpha Address List" file back .

Any assistance wiould be appreciated

Hello All,
I've never seen this happen before.
I have a main directory with 80 files in it. I created 8 sub-directories under the main directory and put 10 files in each one. I then went back to the main directory and deleted the 80 files that are there. The files I deleted from the main directory were also deleted from the sub-directories! I had to restore everything from the recycle bin! Why did this happen?
Thanks,

So I opened an Office Writer attachment (.odt) from an email and made edits to that document. I hit save but not save as.Tried to open the file the next day but it got deleted. I did some research and realized that was stupid and looked everywhere for advice. So I've gone into temporary internet files folder and I cant find it there. I had deleteted my internet browser history yesterday. Following some random advice on the internet I tried to restore my browsing history by downloading som index.dat reader. Needless to say I am so completely lost. I just need to know if its even possible to recover it. Im willing to goto any computer shop and pay whatever it cost at this point. Oh and the exact message I'm getting is:

C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Window\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content\poli352a[1].odt does not exist

A:Need a file from temp internet file but I accidently deleted browsing history

First, download the free Process Explorer.

Run Process Explorer.

Open your e-mail program (mine is Outlook Express).

Open your e-mail message.

Open your attachment (Office Writer attachment (.odt)).

Inside Process Explorer, right-click the new process (from the application used to open that attachment).

Select Properties...

Select the Image tab.

Look inside the Command line bar.

You'll see the exact path to the temporary folder created for the attachment.

Make sure to check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected system files" in Folder Options.

Only copy the part from C:\Users to Content.IE5.

Note: a new folder number is created each time you open an attachment (e.g. IGSDF94V)

Example:

"C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\WINWORD.EXE" "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\IGSDF94V\Example.docx"

Paste that path inside the My Computer address bar and click OK.

You'll have to look inside each folder manually for the name of your document. The folder number will be different from the one you're seeing inside the Command line bar in Process Explorer.

Do not run a Search. Look very carefully inside each folder. It should be there!

At the first after I upgraded my notebook from windows 8 to windows 10,
I just realize that 1 of my 3 user account is not exist anymore (the Guest account is not there just after I upgrade it into windows 10). As I tried to make the new Guest account and still didnt work (I dont want to follow such a complex email registration required by windows 10 to make a new user account), I thought to delete my secondary user account. However, I just realize that there is a file that I saved in the Desktop under my secondary user account. Is there a way to restore this desktop file that is saved in my deleted user account?

I have opened C:\Users\ but I cant find the folder with the name of my deleted user account.
Can anyone help me?

It's very important yet big file (around 2 GB). Thankss

A:How to restore file in deleted user account (Desktop File)

Hi Blaume, welcome to the Ten Forums.

I am sorry but when you deleted the user account, it's gone, all its files are gone, forever. The only way to get the file back would be to restore a system image made before the account was deleted.

The built-in guest account no longer works in Windows 10. However, you can create a new Guest account by yourself:

Well, sort of strange thing happening with my pc.

I'll give an example: two files, names 1st_file.avi, 2nd_file.avi, nearly same size, at different locations. Now I deleted 1st_file.avi and 2-3 weeks after deletion, I open 2nd_file.avi (which wasn't deleted) and find that instead of the original 2nd_file.avi, the contents of 1st_file.avi are being played.

How can the contents of 1st_file.avi mapped onto the the contents of 2nd_file.avi? And where did my 2nd_file.avi go??

thanks for being patient and reading it through

OK i should admit that this was a slightly dubious file alledgedly proving a certain starlets dislike of underwear..... However the file name is so long that Windows XP will not let me delete it... also the file was corrupted ( no pun intended ) so has a zero file length.. I did virus scan the download and AVG said file was not virus.... anyway i need to get rid of it any ideas....!!!

A big shout out to all replies But the Biggest thanks to Moderator John Will who had the simple idea of shift everything else then delete folder........ Why is it always the simplest ideas that work best... PS I eventually saw evidence of starlets dislike of pants on google images.... Take off safe search and leer away without having to download any suspiscious files.

Hello,
recently one of my clients contacted me and told me that he was unable to download a .msg file from our CRM system.
So I connected to the computer to have a closer look at the problem.
Turns out that he only had the problem with some specific .msg file.
The file has the name "Besuchsberich AK Feinrohr - Angebot Nr 2001267 Z 800+ Kombibehälter 2 x 700 Ltr Volumen (3).msg". When the user clicked the download link and just selected "open", he always got the message that the file probably
was moved or was being deleted.
Selecting a different download location helped and provided a workaround, but I don't what's causing the problem. Can anyone help?
I thought maybe path is too long or hdd is full but that wasn't the case. Also deleted temp. internet files, no luck.

thanks for reading and regards

A:Should this File Be Deleted

Hello topazbest and welcome to the TSG Malware Removal forum. A file name is really not enough to make a judgement on. The location is what is more important. Files with names of valid operating system files in the worng location would point to malicious software.

A good place to check a file out is Jotti's.

Perform a search for this file and note the location. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

Go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan.

Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

Cheers.

I have tried to recover it without success.

What problems can I expect as a result of this mistake?

Hi Teddyboy,

It is my understanding that the page file is a file used by windows as memory. When all your physical memory is fully used and you need more, Windows uses your hard drive and the file named Pagefile. Windows will recreate it when it needs to.

Right click a blank part of your desktop & select New->Folder. Call it SPFix. Go to http://www.derbilk.de/404.html and download SpSeHjfix. Get the one that's specified for your Operating System. So if you have Windows 98, get the one that's listed for Windows 98.

Disconnect from the net and close all programs. Run SpSeHjfix and click on 'Start Disinfection'. When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process. The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

Now run the CWShredder and hit the Fix button.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and the log that was created by SpSeHjfix.

Try this:
Download Unlocker 1.9.2 - FileHippo.com

If that doesn't work, try taking ownership of the file then try to delete it

Were you told what infection you had?

Depending on what you had, would explain how the files were being reproduced.

I sure hope someone can help me with this. I have an Iomega 160 Gb external hard drive thats about a year old. I put some software, movies, mp3s and games on it from my old pc because I was gonna transfer it to my new computer. For some reason I thought that I already put it on my new pc so I wound up deleting all the files on my external hard drive. I did it using the shift/delete method. Well today I realized what I did and the files are gone. I called a few places and was told that since I did it using the shift/delete method that theyre gone. I dont want to go through the trouble of a data recovery service if the chances of getting the files are slim. Can anyone give me an honest answer on what my chances are on getting the files back. Also, I checked the recycle bin just in case and theres nothing there. One other question out of left field, if the files cant be recovered would I be able to find out dates of other files I've deleted from info left on the external hard drive. As you can tell I've deleted stuff accidentally a few times. Thanks for your help.

Using a Compaq Presario 7470 with 98se. While running AdAware program, it notified me one of my files had a virus. Given the option to delete, I did- thinking I could replace it with an uncorrupted one from my backups. Problem is, it's nowhere to be found and happens to be one in my start-up registry. It's called "netserv.exe". Is there anywhere I can download this from to replace the deleted file? Microsoft, C-Net, and Compaq have been no help.

I deleted the following file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,
I am unable to log on to my computer.
I tapped F8 to get a command prompt but I am unsure which boot device
to select and what to do next.
Please help.

First of all - why did you delete that file?

You can boot from your XP CD - go into the recovery console - and copy that file from your XP CD to the system32 folder.

Ok, first off, I wasn't really sure where to put this, but I figured this would be the best place since the answer could possibly vary depending on the OS. But if there's a better place for it, the mods can just move it.

So, anyway, I was wondering if there's some way for me to recover a file once it's been deleted? From what I understand, simply deleting a file doesn't completely get rid of it, so I figured recovering it should be possible. If this is possible (and I would assume it is), I'd really like to know how to do so, because I've made the mistake of deleting a couple files that I'd really like back. Thanks.

A:Recovering a deleted file

When I file gets deleted it will normally go to the Recycle bin. In order to recover your file open the recycle, search for the file then rightclick on and select restore. The file will the be restored to the location from where it would have been deleted.

Hope this helps

A:please help me. i have deleted an important file

Welcome to TSG, Andrew.

First let's re-assure you. You haven't deleted an important file, System32.exe is NOT a windows file.

I would like you to do the following:

Go to this site, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip it, launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it
Come back to TSG, Right Click and paste its contents here
