Unmountable Boot Volume/Hard Drive Failed Short DST Check

Q: Unmountable Boot Volume/Hard Drive Failed Short DST Check

Recently I fired up my laptop and left it downloading an update for Civ 6 via Steam whilst I took a nap. When I woke up I was confronted with a black screen with no curosr. I tried a few fixes posted online but following the advice from the I.T Crowd I tried turning it off and back on again. When I turned my laptop back on I recieved a blue "Unmountable Boot Volume" error screen and my laptop went into automatic repair. I had a screen with the HP logo and "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then it went to a black screen with no cursor. I left it on the black screen overnight but when I checked it the next morning it was still on the black screen. I turned the computer off. My next step was to create Windows 10 USB recovery disk using Rufus. I then turned on my laptop again, deactivated Secureboot and enabled legacy booting. When I saved and exited my laptop didn't reset so I reset it manually using the power button. When it came back on I selected the USB drive via Boot Options and then chose Windows 10 64 bit. It recieved a screen saying loading files. It then wen to a screen with the HP logo and the spinning loading thing HP has. The next screen was a black screen with no cursor. I left it for an hour just in case but nothing changed so I reset it again via the power button and tried loading all three of the safe modes to see if they worked but each time I recieved the HP loading screen then a black screen with no cursor. Finally I did a hardware check and the hard drive failed the Short DST Check. The failure ID was PSL0H0-7PJ8A5-MFPWMG-60RX03. Any advice anyone can give me at this point would be welcome, even if it's just "Sorry dude, you're laptop is dead" or "Take it to a shop". I'm kind of gutted because my laptop's warranty expired in July this year. Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Unmountable Boot Volume/Hard Drive Failed Short DST Check

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If... The computer was turned off the whole time but I didn't realize it was in the room till the next day. Could there be a chance this would be more just a hard drive? Hi, Sadly to say, the HDD on your machine failed. The following link shows its specs:          http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03663774 You can replace larger (capatity) and faster HDD. Any standard 2.5" SATA HDD on the market today can do the job. You need Recovery media to rebuild your machine. Did you create one ? Otherwise, please try:              http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

My laptop had been working completely fine until today where I had come home and the start up was taking ages. It was stuck on the HP logo for a while and then was followed by a message stating that the PC has a problem and it was "Preparing Automatic Repair".The screen is now blank and does not do anything. I restarted and the same issue occurred. My laptop is OUT OF WARRANTY - bought in 2014 and had no issues with the laptop up until now. The support team on Twitter ran through tests with me on this issue and advised that the Hard Drive needs to be replaced due to the Hard Drive Short DAT Check Failure - just now wondering whether any of the data can be recovered and how to go about it? Any help will be appreciated!!!

A:HARD DRIVE SHORT DST CHECK FAILED

Probably. You have to stop trying to boot the laptop and physically remove the hard drive.  Here's the Service Manual: Manual See p. 43 and 49 for "how to". This is not real easy to do. Post back if you need more help and we can likely find a video.  It will be very similar to this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04324972 Once you get the hard drive out you need a usb to SATA adapter like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ugreen-Converter-Adapter-Cable-Power/dp/B00MYU0E0K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=148...  Hook this to the hard drive and then attach the usb to another computer and it is likely possible to retrieve data. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.  See p. 49 of the Manual: Manual If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hello Mic70, Welcome to FORUM !!  Whenever the Hard Disk Short/Long DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby   Please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files.  Hi @Himanshu9001, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally. I would be watching a video, click to a different tab, stuff like that, and everything would become unresponsive and freeze (didn't just happen to my browser, would happen even with my search bar). Restarting and giving it a moment would fix this problem, but it got to the point it happened 20 or 30 minutes after start up. I decided to do a reset, chose to not save my files (didn't do a 100% wipe though) because there's nothing critically important, and I thought it could be a virus. Did the wipe, got an error a good bit in that the wipe couldn't be done (I do not remember the exact wording). Tried again, same thing. It directed me to some options, chose the launch windows 10 normally one, just to see if I was still having problems. Did this, and what would happen is computer would boot up, HP logo, cycle back to computer boot up, HP logo, it was in a loop. Waited a good hour and a half to two hours, would not stop. MickSull68 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that error message means that your hard drive has failed. It will need to be replaced.Once you have the replacement drive, you will need to use something known as HP Recovery Media to restore your PC to working condition. This is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks. You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded. (more on this below)While you are waiting for the HP media to arrive, you should work at retrieving any files and folders you want to save from this drive, as follows:1) Remove the hard drive from the PC2) Purchase a USB-to-Hard Driver adapter kit3) Download and install this utility on a working PC: http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_...4) Connect the old drive to the working PC5) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the old drive. If that tools does not find what you need, an alternative is Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuvaAnd, if that does not work well, the best tool out there is this one, but only the trial version is free: http://www.file-recovery.com/-------- Ordering Recovery Media ------------You can look online for Recovery Media starting w... Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Hi, I'm helping a friend fix her computer. It is an HP running Windows XP Media Center Edition. The problem is it won't boot up at all. Not in safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. Most times when I try to start in safe mode it just restarts. When I tell it to start up in the Recovery Console it gives me a blue screen with the error message UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and STOP: 0x000000ED (0x856CC9E0, 0xC0000006, 0x0000000, 0x0000000). I tried to boot using the recovery disc that came with the computer, and was able to get into the recovery console that way. I ran the diagnostic test and it gave me the error code HD521-2W. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A:Unmountable Boot Volume & Hard Drive Error HD521-2W

Often times, that error message can mean it's a physical error with the Hard Drive. You may want to try (if you're comfortable with the hardware) to make sure that the Hard Drive's physical connections are still intact. Can you get into recovery console? If so, your best bet is to run a "chkdsk /p /r" in recovery console and see if that works.

I have a two year old HP Pavillion (now a year out of waranty) that crashed and now returns "disk read error press ctl+alt+del to restart" when attempting to boot. Using the diagnostic tools avialable under F2, I get the following failure: Hard Drive Short DST Check: FailedFailure ID: GLL3S1-76684P-MFPV7G-60RA03Product ID: E9Z18AV Would anyone be so kind as to tell me what this particular failure ID code means?  Thank you.

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.  A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Your model is not one of the easiest to replace hdd on but the Maintenance & Service Guide will help you or your chosen repair shop.http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04438537

Alright so I've had my computer for right over a year. Never experienced any problems. However, yesterday my toddler got ahold of my laptop for 15 minutes, i came back and he had locked the desktop and several files were opened when i typed my password and got back in. The computer was running slow so I restarted, when I restarted it would not load. When i got home i decided to reformat the whole thing. The reformat went fine until it was over and the computer restarted. It kept going in a loop. I could see there was a blue screen but before i could read it, it would dismiss it and restart all over. So i disabled the computer from crashing and restarting after the error so I could read the blue screen. The blue screen read Unmountable boot Volume. I found my system repair disk and inserted it. The Bios is showing the HD, but when i try to access it from my command prompt in my startup repair, it says Cyclic redundancy check. I do not have the windows 7 installation disk and have always reformatted from the system repair. I'm starting to believe my HD is fried, but I found it a little difficult to believe since he was only alone with it for 15 minutes and the computer has never shown any signs of HD failure ever. Any tips, advice, or anything?

It's a Toshiba Satellite L655-S5150.

Thank's in advance.

A:cyclic redundancy check, unmountable boot volume?

Is the HD detected when you boot into BIOS setup? If not check the HD is making firm contact by reinstalling it. If that fails replace it.

If HD is detected or once it's replaced follow these steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Everything needed is provided.

If there's further problems run the hardware tests in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start

tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally. Turned computer off manually and on a few times, same problem. Turned computer off then on, f2, system quick test, and I got the error in the title FAILURE ID: QBS97X-82L863-XD7WMA-60WD03PRODUCT ID: P1A95UA#ABA

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

Hi, As stated, I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased 1 year ago. Just 2 days ago, my warranty has ended. At the same point in time, I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend. When I got it back, it works just fine, but it had that malware in it that I want to remove. So, I fired up system restore and go on restoring. It finished doing so until  it restarts. When it restarts, I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours, to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media. All works well until I got stuck in the installation. I got stuck at 10% (When I searched on the internet why, the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on. I am able to open it up and take it off for a moment. But because I need to go to work, I decided against it. I turned the laptop off and set off. When I got back, I can't even let it proceed to the installation, saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot. Did that same thing several times and nothing happened. Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check. It passed the SMART test, but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST. It produced the error code: MFUC7T-7RG98K-CD7WMG-64DK03 Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall? Or is the HDD really is ruined? If this is the case, I'm probably just ... Read more

Okkk. So I've searched pretty much everywhere and I can't figure out what to do if my laptop doesn't recognize my hard drive. I put the Vista disk in and the only thing I'm able to use is the command prompt because none of the others work since it doesn't recognize hard disk. When i try to do chkdsk/r it says
''the type of the file system is NTFS.
cannot lock current drive.
Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.''
Is there any way to get past this?
Or some way to get my computer to recognize the drivers?
thanks in advance.

or if you anybody have other suggestions would be most appreciated
THANKS IN ADVANCE

A:Unmountable Boot Volume (CD DRIVE IS DEAD ALSO)

I have that BSOD Unmountable Boot VolumeClick to expand...

Check in the bios if it recognizes the hd.
Run some hd diagnostics (with vendor's utility).
You should be able to make a bootable pen drive in a similar way like a bootable CD.

Hi,

In searching for a solution for my problem I?ve seen a lot of similar posts but nothing with my exact problem, so please excuse me for starting yet another thread on the subject.

I have two 160Gb hard drives installed (both the same make), one as primary master (C: with Windows XP Pro) with dvd writer as slave, the other as secondary master.

After a power cut I restarted my computer and got the following familiar screen:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your file and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous start-up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren?t sure what caused the problem choose start windows normally.

SAFE MODE
SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT
LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION
SART WINDOWS NORMALLY.

When, I press any of the above, I then get the message (blue screen with white writing):

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

I received a "unmountable boot volume" error on our laptop.
We have a Dell Vostro laptop with Windows XP

When I was trying to fix the boot error, I changed the BIOS Settings to load from CD first.
Then I loaded the Windows XP CD and attempted to run the Recovery, however, I received a message saying "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed..."

What should I do next to try to fix this issue?
We hope the hard drive is not dead because we will have a lost quite a bit of information. I will appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you.

A:Did not find any hard disk drives while trying to fix unmountable boot volume error

The hard drive is the cause of the error. If you can't afford to lose the information, remove the hard drive and put it aside. Install a new drive and re-install the version of Windows you were using... Information on the bad drive might be recoverable by placing it into an external USB enclosure and accessing the files that way

Hi, i have hp pavilion g6 laptop and its upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 then windows 10.  From last few days i was getting "Memory_Management", "Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error" and so many other errors with blue screen. Due to this i have to power off the system from main power button by holding for few seconds. Now i was getting hang problem. I saw in task manager that DISK UTILIZATION was 100%. I did a hardware test where i got below results : HARD DRIVE SHORT DST Check : WARNING HARD DRIVE Optimized DST Check  : FAILEDFAILURE ID: 9U3UWX-6KT85B-MFPWWJ-61Q003 Can anybody tell me how to resolve this or i need to replace the hard drive. -ThanksPankaj

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????
