I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had my Y510P for almost 4 years now with no major issues ot speak of, until a few days ago. I home to find my laptop dead and my power supply making a chirping sound (NOTE: the power supply only makes the sound when plugged into the laptop) and no indicator LEDs lit on my laptop. I tested the charger with a multi-meter and it reads the ~20v that it should, but again, no response from the laptop.  I also tried the "remove battery/charger, hold power button for 30sec to discharge static" which didn't help at all. Figuring I'd start with the easiest solution, I ordered a replacement charger, that produced no better results. My multi-meter reads the charger at ~20v, I plug it into the laptop, nothing happens (not even charging lights) and strangely when I test the charger AFTER it has been plugged in it read ~0.2V. The replacement charger doesn't make the chirping sound. I figured the issue was some kind of short in the laptop's power jack, so I dis-assembled the laptop and removed the jack. If this were the problem it would be an easy enough fix, that doesn't look like the case. When I plug the charger into the now-detatched jack adn test the voltage coming out of the jack I get the expected ~20v. But if I test the jack while it is plugged into the mother board I get low to no reading. I am hoping the issue is somehow power related, blown MOBO fuse or something causing it to short out considering dead motherboards usually still charge/try to POST. My T410i hard drive died, I have Windows 7 Home Basic OA key, but how to install on new hard drive? I had to replace the hard drive, I realise from the help pages I should have written down the error messages before replacing... Either way I am unsure how to obtain the Windows 7 Home Basic software to re-install.I have the key, where should I go - the microsoft site says it came pre-installed so I need to contact the supplier - Lenovo, but on the product list T410i is too old and not listed. Thanks in advance for you time.CheersPaul

Hi Guys, This is something that has been bugging me for almost a year now and I've just been really lazy to solve the issue. The problem is because for some reason, unknown to all except Lenovo, they decided NOT to support Windows 10 for a couple of the laptop models that they had in their product line when W10 was launched. Just my luck, my Lenovo Y510 (Model No - 20217) is among those unsupported PCs and hence there are certain features that no longer work.(Laptops-and-netbooks :: IdeaPad-Y-Series-laptops :: IdeaPad-Y510p-Notebook :: 20217 - Lenovo Support... Hi,

Recently my Hard drive died and my Laptop just boots to the BIOS.

I can here a clicking sound so know it's the hard drive that's faulty and the BIOS says no hard drive is detected.

I have upgraded a hard drive before using cloning, but never had to replace a faulty hard drive that has completely died.

I have removed the old hard drive and ordered a new one, but how do I now recover the Laptop?

I have a recovery DVD or USB, when the new hard drive arrives can I simply put it in and then insert the recovery DVD or USB reboot and go from there installing the OS (Win 8.1) or do I need to create some sort of DVD / USB with Drivers for the new hard drive?

Any advice on replacing a dead hard drive and recovery of a Laptop back to the OS would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A:Hard Drive died

If the Recovery DVD you have is simply a Rescue disk and not the full OS you can download the Windows 8.1 media creation tool here. If the computer came preinstalled with Windows 8 or 8.1 the key is embedded in firmware. After installing the OS it will self-activate once online. If you use the Media Creation Tool additional drivers from your OEM's support site may need to be installed.

When installing using the OS from the MCT click next when it asks for the key.

Hi to the forum.

This is my first post.

I got a windows 8 pro disk from amazon and installed it on my laptop over windows 7 and it worked great, no problems.

I then downloaded windows 8 pro from Microsoft on to one of my desk top pc's which was running windows xp. This went well with no problems at the time.
Tonight the hard drive died on that desk top. When I put a new drive in this desk top can I use the windows 8 pro disk to install on this hard drive but with the windows pro 8 key from the windows 8 pro I downloaded.
also as its is a upgrade windows 8 will I need to reinstall windows xp first.

Thank you for you help with this.

Hello Cornishman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes, you will be able to do a clean install with your upgrade Windows 8 Pro without having to install XP first. You would just use the same product key number that came with your download.

I posted here a while back with complaints about my PC, as i couldnt get XP to re-install.

Well, now it tells me the Hard drive is dead and to contact the manufacturer .

Its a Dell Dimension 4300 1.7GHz, and from a quick google search i have found a replacement HD, but its 140 notes. Now, if that doesnt work and the computer still wont get its act together then im 140 down, which im not keen on .

My question is...... Its only a 40gig HD, and i know i could find one a lot cheaper than 140, but im not sure if it would be compatible.
Does anyone know if these machines are fussy as to what make or model of HD you sling in them??

I have a Compaq Presario 6027US Desktop PC. I tried to turn it on the other day and a message popped up saying it failed to boot up due to a missing or corrupt C:\Windows\System32\Config\System file. I tried to recover but it only made it 60% before stopping. I restarted it and it said "eminent failure has been detected on your hard disk." I was going to use Knoppix and retrieve my files off my hard drive, if possible. What I need help with is buying a replacement hard drive. I can't get onto "My Computer" to see what exact type I need.

I know it uses an "Integrated Hard Drive Controller" ATA 100.

What I don't know is whether or not it is 5400RPM or 7200RPM.

It will make a difference because I want to upgrade the storage size as high as possible. If it is 5400 RPM it will only upgrade to 80GB, but 7200 RPM will upgrade to 120GB.

Is there a way to find the exact specs. of my system since my computer will not boot?

Any help would be GREAT!

Thanks.

Took hard drive in to recovery company and they said they can't copy, but can recover data for exorbinant amount. I know, through it away and use most recent backup, except.....backups were in the case stolen from car (was on way home to put in safe). No back up. Is anyone aware of any programs, etc. that would assist in getting my data off the drive? I can still access it, (don't have it in the machine at present), but can't copy from it. Thanks.

I have a HP dv1000 laptop. I was having problems with the power cord, and the day before I was going to take it in for service, it just suddenly would not proceed past one of the DOS screens... so I took it in for service (luckily I had a protection plan), thinking there was a command I didn't know how to do or something, and when I got it back they told me my hard drive died and had replaced it with a new one. Well I was thankful to have the problem fixed but I had data I didn't have time to back up! If I would have known and had a chance beforehand, I would have backed up my data...

So I'm on this forum because I want to find out if there's a way for me to go BACK to my old hard drive and retrieve the data and programs I NEED... I did purchase an external hard drive to transfer everything to. HELP IS NEEDED! Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545. The hard drive went bad just a couple weeks after purchasing it. Dell replaced it. Now a year and a half later the hard drive went bad again. I have over a years worth of pictures, videos, and files on there. Is there any way I can get these back?

When the hard drive died recently my laptop just froze. I turned it off. A few hours later I went to get back on and could not start windows. It told me to "start normally" or "set up repair" When I would choose set up repair, the laptop would restart and go back to the same screen. If I chose start normally it would go to the windows start page not doing anything, flash a blue screen, and restart. I contacted Dell and they had me do some tests, which it said found no defective hardware. I got a new hard drive and the laptop works fine. I just hate to lose my data for, what seems like, the hundredth time! I've lost at least 5 hard drives in 4 years. =\

Hello there, I am needing some help with a problem and was hoping that some-one may be able to help.

Start at the beginning.....

A friend brought me his computer to have a look at as it had stopped working, ie: it no longer booted or ran at all, I built this system for him 8 months ago and it has ran flawlessly until this week.
So on getting it back I tried to boot from a floppy emergency disk but the computer would not even put up a boot screen or show any sign of life on screen.

Next I took out the hard drive and tried it in my own computer, this time I was getting a starting bios screen but it would not detect the hard drive, kept hanging at the "detecting master hard drive" screen, but hard drive is spinning up ok so it's not dead, just not being recognized.
Took out his processor, (to see why I wasn't getting a startup screen on his computer), and put it in my system only for it to wreck my system, eg: it will no longer boot, screen is dead, or recognize the hard disk and am getting a constant beeping noise from the speaker. Can't even see the POST and bios screen on monitor. Same as the culprit machine.

As it's an Asus motherboard on mine and I have the I panel I am getting a "C1" error indicating "auto detect on-board DRAM & cache" whatever that means.

So I now have 2 systems sitting that I cannot boot or get to recognize hard drives or even show any startup screens.

I am scared of it being a virus that I have... Read more

Hi

My hard drive died in my HP Pavilion 6640c. Can anyone tell me what type of HD can I install. Does it have to be a proprietary HP HD or can I install a generic one like Maxtor or Western Digital. Also will the restore CD that came with the Pavilion. I understand that HP assigns a serial number on the original HD that has to be matched with the restore DC.

Thanks

Joe

A:[SOLVED] Hard drive died in HP Pavilion 6640c

go here about installing the new harddrive

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/docume...Id=hppavilion19152&docName=bph07119&cat=setup

As for the hard drive any IDE compatible drive can be installed. And I wouldn't exactly call Maxtor or WD generic, but other's will probably disagree.

The serial number is Microsoft's Product ID number. It's located on the manual or on the jewel case the cd came in, it's about 20 numbers and letters long. You need to type it in during the install process when it prompts you to. DO NOT THROW THE NUMBER AWAY. You can't install the software without this number.

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron XP w/Windows XP (NFTS file system).

Recently, the monitor on the laptop went black. I connected it to my LCD TV. The laptop worked all right for a while.

One day, it would not load windows and said "Unmountable Boot Drive" along with the Blue Screen of Death.

I've had this laptop for about 5 yrs and actually recently bought a new one.

I would like to try and see if I can recover files from this hard drive though. I have pictures, word docs, programs I purchased, bookmarks, etc, that I'd like to recover.

Here's the problem:

I created a boot CD to try and see if I can access the files w/a program I got at NTFS.COM

When I fire up my laptop, I cannot get it to display on my LCD TV screen until I hit FN F8, which brings me to the Windows Safe Mode Prompt.

I can't get into the BIOS and change the boot order on the laptop!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

First of all, hello to all the people here. I am new in this forum and I am far from being an expert on this things, so that's why I am here I guess, to get some help.

Yesterday suddenly my computer restarted ang gave me and error message: Can't start windows cause the file System32/Drivers/Isapnp.sys is lacking or is damaged.
Well, you know that's not a rare thing, cause a lot of people seem to have that problem once in a while. You usually load the windows xp cd, go to the repair console and you fix it from there.......

Problem is, that I havent been able to fix it being the result that the hard drive is seriously damaged. The Chkdsk operation told me it had some unreparble damage and we tried the hard drive in another pc and it didnt read it. It said it had no format.

So I really wonder what could have caused this. A virus? How come a hard disk that is only a year old and it hasnt been through bad use died this way suddenly???

And I thought Maxtor hard drives were one of the best on the market, now I dont think I will ever buy one again.

Any comment, help, will be really appreciated.

Kind regards.

As the title says, my Acer laptop died on me.
I have ordered a new laptop which is an HP.

If I transfer my existing hard drive with win 8.1 and all my programmes installed from the Acer to the HP, what problems will I encounter, and are they surmountable.

Thanks in advance for any input.

A:My computer died - question about transfer of hard drive.

If your new PC was also an Acer with the same type of CPU, you might get away with a HD swap, But since the new one is an HP with probably a totally different CPU, you're stuck with using the new PC with the HD that came with it.

There are several different ways, that your old HD can be connected to your new PC, via a USB cable, so that you can access and copy all the files from the old HD to the new one. Programs themselves cannot be copied, but you have to be installed from the original media.

Almost any decent Computer Shop can hook up your old HD to their own computer, access all your data files and burn them to a DVD for you.
I do that quite often for my own customers. As long as they give me the old PC, I don't even charge for the data recovery service.

Good Luck!

Firstly I know I know I should have backed up, but all may not be lost with the Dell laptop. It ran out of power and now it won't charge up. My cousin says the fizzling noise from the pack on the power lead suggests it's the lead itself, and to try borrow a similar lead. If it's not the lead it may be the battery needs replacing. If neither of these work he says he can open the laptop remove the drive and use some docking thing to transfer all my files onto an external drive for the moment.

I hope to buy an iMac similar to those in my college and therefore I need to buy an external drive that can work with an iMac and a Windows laptop. I asked in a local computer store and the sales assistant told me that he could sell a 3TB drive formatted for windows, but it couldn't work with a Mac. He said that drives need a switch or something to change from Mac or PC. This seems wrong because I bought a small 650GB external drive and formatted it to FAT32 on my tutors instructions and I can easily work on either the college iMacs or my PC laptop at home with no problems. The sales guy seemed surprised by this. Not sure he knew what he was talking about.

Am I right, can I buy any external drive, I had my eye on Seagate STBV3000200 3TB Expansion USB 3.0 3.5 Inch Desktop Hard Drive and simply format it on the Mac to FAT32 and will it then be compatible if I plug it into a PC?

Sorry for the novel, and thanks in advance for any help.

I have an XP disk & license that I can install on what ever hard drive I can get to work here and the RIP software manufacturer said their software would work on XP. But I don't have a copy of Windows 2000 NT.

My question is that if I can't find this same hard drive locally, can I use an IDE or a SATA hard drive instead and still run the RIP software correctly? There is 2 IDE (primary & secondary) connectors directly on the motherboard. One is used for the CD rom drive, the other is unused. I am not certain but I don't believe the motherboard has a SATA connection. I have 2 good spare IDE hard drives.

If I can't make plates I can't print so I need to get this reso... Read more

My laptop shut itself down and said there was an imminent hard drive failure. Gave it to my district's IT person who tried to copy the hard drive to put into the new one I bought, but she said her drive copier couldn't read the drive. Of course I can't find the correct version of Windows anywhere. (She has Wondows 7 professional, I found the Vista Update of Windiws 7 professional but we can't find a copy of 7 home.) We checked HP and I can order Windows or Recovery discs but she said the sticker on the laptop doesn't have the serial number needed. Tried emailing HP for advice on that but their technical contact page "cannot be found" and I got put on hold forever when I tried to call.

Here's the info she said us on the label if my laptop:
Pavilion dv7-4087d Entertainment Notebook
00196-105-235-216
584037-001
X16-96072

Any ideas? Thanks

I have a FULL Seagate Barracuda 3tb internal hard drive that just stopped working that I would like to recover the data. My big road block in trying to recover the data myself is that my computer is not recognizing that the drive is connected. It has not been physically damaged and has not left the computer in the 11 months that I've had it besides for the rare occasion I add a new part to my computer. It is under warranty so whatever I do I would like not to void the warranty so I can have it replaced once I get the date. Here is what happened.

Last night when I tried to move a file to my hard drive it was really slow and and kept giving me errors. It finally worked and I started watching the file from the hard drive on my media player. Half way through my media player gave me all kinds of errors and the file stopped working. After closing my media player I saw that my hard drive seemed to have been disconnected (It did not show up in "My Computer". I tried rebooting, taking the hard drive out and putting it back in and switching which bay I had it in (I have a case that allows for hot swapping). None of this has worked. When I put it in the computer you can hear it working (all normal noises, no bad ticking or anything). It slows/freezes up the computer as the computer seems to be trying to read the hard drive but after awhile it seems like it gives up and the computer returns back to normal without recognizing the hard drive.

I took it to a local compute... Read more

Hi
I have tried to google for solution but nothing worked. I cannot come to windows xp (to desktop). No matter how I boot (normally, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with cmd and so on), it always gives me out bluescreen error that goes away extremly fast (around 1 microsecond or even less). I tired around 15 different copies of xp - all were bootable but nowhere were the option Recovery Console, also not (Re)Install Windows. I repeat, I cannot come to desktop. I tried with Linux's knoppix cd - hardware is good, all datas could be accessable well. But this doesn't mean anything to me. Thanks good it goes only through Knoppix bootable cd, I don't want to have linux installed. I want to come to xp. Im not so good in Knoppix - just in case if someone thought to give me some instructions through it.
My question is the following:
Could anyone please provide me a solution? I know the following is against the rules but I have no choice; Does anyone know where, online, I could get proper installation windows xp pro (sp3)? Which will, for sure, have the options to reinstall (overwritte) xp over damaged one?

I apologize for this, I know its not good to ask this but I really see no other way.

Hopefully someone could help please.

Thank you.

Hello!

Your operating system is most likely corrupted.
Or HDD might be damaged.

Do you have any important files on HDD???
Take out HDD, connect HDD to some other PC and backup important data.

Check what make/model is HDD. Visit manufacturer's Web Site,
download diagnostic tools and scan your HDD.

If HDD is bad, it is vital to backup data as soon as possible.
If HDD turns out to be OK, you have two options:
1. To run System Repair.
2. Wipe HDD and do a clean install of operating system.

Post back after you scan HDD...

Soo, I own an Acer Aspire V3-771G-9456 laptop, before the crash it was running windows 8, which came preinstalled.

The other day I had gotten a USB in order to make a recovery disk for my laptop. A few days before the hd corrupted and I had to completely reformat using its recovery partition, but then before I could make said recovery disk, the HD started 'buzzing' and needless to say...it's dead now :[

So I ordered an erecovery disk from Acer the other day, and purchased a decent looking SS hard-drive.

I have the new hard-drive installed, but who knows when the recovery disk will arrive!!

So here's where you geniuses come in:

So I'd rather not wait for the disk to arrive as it might take up to 2 weeks!

My brother informed me that I should be able to download windows 8 online and use the product key that's usually listed on the back of the laptop. However, there is no win 8 product key on the back :-/
So I'm at a loss... his laptop has a windows product key, but mine doesn't? Is it located somewhere else that I'm not looking?
I checked the bios but at first glance it didn't appear to be there, and that's as far as I've gotten.

Any advice on how to get win 8 onto my system legally without any more purchases, so that I can be using my new SS-hd laptop preferably tonight?

Also possibly useful info:
I own a student copy of Win7 (Ultimate?) upgrade that i'm not using, which I would be fine using on my laptop, but it is not a copy, it is the upgrade...so it requires a prev... Read more

A:Acer-Aspire V3 laptop hard-drive died, no recovery disk

The Windows 8 key is embedded in the BIOS, there is no COA sticker.

I believe you will have to wait for the recovery disk if you want Windows 8 as you will not be able to download a Windows 8 ISO without a retail key. Microsoft really screwed this up and has made no attempts to fix it.

You can do a clean install of a Windows 7 upgrade disc, see here: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version - Windows 7 Help Forums
