Robocopy copying folders from the wrong place

Q: Robocopy copying folders from the wrong place

I've set up a back up batch file to copy my Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders from my computer to an external hard drive.
However, while running the Documents backup, it seems to find, the pictures, music, and videos folders all inside the documents folders labelled "My Music", etc.
However, these folders do not exist. When I navigate in explorer to C:\Users\username\Documents\ I cannot find a folder labelled "My Music". When I try to navigate to C:\Users\username\Documents\My Music it tells me that "access is denied". I cannot find them through command line either.
As well, when I try and find the folders on the backup drive, they do not seem to be there either.
I just don't understand where this is coming from.

Preferred Solution: Robocopy copying folders from the wrong place

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It sounds like you are running foul of junction points. You may need to use the /XJ switch.

I'm trying to use robocopy for mirroring my most important files between two computers. Except for one issue, it works as expected.

I'm trying to copy the complete "Documents" directory. Previously, this was called "My documents" and contained for example "My pictures". Now it doesn't, and I like that, but robocopy don't. Somehow it still searches for these directories, and of course can't find them. Seems robocopy needs a fix, or am I missing out on something here?

A:Robocopy looking for my directories in the wrong place

When I use robocopy, I use it in a text based batch file. So, as long as your paths are correct in the batch file it should go exactly where you tell it to. I haven't noticed any issues doing it this way with Windows 7.

I want to use Robocopy to backup the data from my external hardrive D to a file called 'Backup' in a cluster storage W.
I only want to backup the modified and new files. In other words, I don't want to back up all the files in D every time I run Robocopy.

This is what I wrote by reading other posts on the forum:
title Backup personal files
robocopy D:\ W:\Backup /e /mir /np /tee /log+:backup_log.txt

However, the script below does not back up all the files.
Any suggestion on how I can improve the robocopy script?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hey guys,

This may sound like a really silly question, but I'm just getting to grips with using Robocopy.

How do you copy folders with spaces in the title? E.g: T:\Admin Tools
I keep getting an error.

Any help would be great thanks.

It's ok, I've worked it out. I didn't realise I had to put Quotation marks in!

Last week I used a robocopy tutorial on this site to create a backup script, and it was working fine. Today I tried to run this script, inputting new destination information but leaving everything else the same, and now it is copying all of the folders, but none of the files.

It counts a total of 509 Dirs but 0 files--no skipped, no mismatch, no failed.

My syntax/options are as follows:
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Training_backup log.txt

Does anyone see what might be causing this problem or have suggestions?

The source folder is directory:\folder and the destination folder is directory:\folder\subfolder\subfolder, if that matters.

A:Issue with Robocopy only copying folders, not files, in Windows 7

It should default to all files (*.*), but you could put the *.* in the command to see if it makes a difference.
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" *.* /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt

If that doesn't work can you post the actual commands you are using, with the real folder names ?

I have WINDOWS XP, and can't figure out what other topic this question might belong in...

I don't know when or how it happened, but two file folders MY SHARED DOCUMENTS and CARRIE'S DOCUMENTS are now in MY COMPUTER.

MY COMPUTER, where it shows the drives. I am pretty sure it never had yellow folders in it before.

I think they should be in C DRIVE? There is a MY DOCUMENTS in C Drive, but it has nothing in it. I'm the only one who uses this computer, but apparenty everything saved goes into CARRIE'S DOCUMENTS. SHARED DOCUMENTS has various folders in it that I suppose would be shared by all, if others used the computer, too.

I've tried dragging them there (or anywhere) but only shortcuts appear in the new area. The folders still say in MY COMPUTER. They won't copy and paste.

When I open something, like in WORD, etc. I can still find them, just they are under MY COMPUTER.

So, they still work, it just seems strange, like they shouldn't be in MY COMPUTER. Unless I have totally missed this for the past year, I don't remember ever seeing them in there before. I take pictures off my memory card with a removable drive, which shows up as F drive, so I look in MY COMPUTER to click on this, all the time.

What happened and how can I fix it? Actually, since it seems to work this way, the only reason to fix it seems to be it looks odd this way.

So I recently upgraded to an SSD, I moved the Location of the Documents folder to my HDD, now when I play games it stores files, where they should normally be in the Documents Folder, in the E:\ drive rather than E:\Documents.

My "Document Properties" look like this:

So shouldn't those folders be going to the Documents folder? They already exist in that folder but are from before I transitioned to an SSD.

Any ideas?

It looks like you moved the Libraries pointer to Documents and not the actual Documents folder which is under

I have the following issue: I want to copy files
including all their attributes and ACLs from my
computer to a network storage.

Our architecture is quite simple: a single domain
controller (I believe it's Windows Server 2008 x64)
and many desktops connected to domain.

Our administrator said we could do this with robocopy
utility which is installed on our desktops (which vary from Vista to
even Windows Server 2003 - just because it's more stable than
XP). She said we have all the permissions required for the operation.

When I tried to perform the following operation:

robocopy C:\MyDirectory \\Storage\TeamA\MyDirectory /E /SEC
I get the message "Access Denied" on 3rd file. When I spoke to our admin,
she told me to find exactly what set of permissions should be defined, and she
will set it as I say.

So, can anyone explain me exactly what permissions/settings/anything else should
be existing for C:\MyDirectory and \\Storage\TeamA directories?

Should our users be defined in some specific way? Anything in policies?

I'll be really appreciative.

In addition: does robocopy perform privileges elevation? So it can accomodate the
minimal required level to perform the operation?

Thanks a lot.

Hi all
I have just found Robocopy and it seems the perfect tool for what I am trying to do....
I make an incremental Backup on one of my PC's (Called Server-PC) every day using AOMEI backupper and I want to mirror that folder on my main PC I have been fiddling with Robocopy for hours now have Googled everything I can think of and can't find out what I am doing wrong.

First of all I Mapped my E:\ drive on My Main PC onto my Server-PC and called it Z:
Using this script --- robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z\ServerDriveCopy" /R:5 /s /purge /COPYALL as a test I Get
Source : D:AOMEI\
Destination : C:\Users\mike\Desktop\Z\ServerDriveCopy\

It starts and then says "There is not enough space on the disk" There is still 700gb empty on the disk! I have checked if Quota's have been enabled and they haven't so can't work this out!

I just found out there is a GUI for Robocopy so I tried that and made a slightly different script:
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z:\ServerDriveCopy" /MIR /S /V /NP /Z /R:10 /W:30 (The only difference is the colon after Z !
and that goes MAD keeps repeating in the cmd window forever but no error message and no files get copied.

So I tried it without using the mapped drive which gives me :
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "\\Main\e\ServerDriveCopy"
and that says "Access Denied" !
I can drag and drop files in explorer OK so I am stumped.

If any one can help I would be very grateful

Hi All,

I have one folder A and have another folder B in the same drive E: I need to move all the content from folder A which are more than 2 years old to folder B. Hence when I ran the robocopy it just copied and I lost all disk space in drive E.

My question is even though I used /MOV command why it is not copied and deleted from the source?

robocopy E:/A E:/B /e /MOV /MINAGE:730

Please suggest..

A:Robocopy /MOV command copying but not deleting from source directory

I created folders Test and Test2 on drive E:, copied some files over and under two years old and tested with command

robocopy E:\Test E:\Test2 /e /mov /minage:730
Works perfect. All files older than 730 are moved, copied to destination and deleted from source. I can only think of two possible causes for your issue:System considers files to be newer than 730 days old
A syntax error in your command
Please run the command, take screenshot of the last part of summary (under the dotted line, highlighted in screenshot below) and post it here.

Well, I ran chkdsk /v /r on the old drive, and it became stable enough to read without problems. So then I copied the boot partition with Partition Wizard. After all that hassle with Acronis, it was a free program I already had that did the job. I'm good now, so let's call it solved.

After installing the convenience rollup KB3125574, robocopy is copying files considering also the creation date of the file. So, when the file exists in the source and in the destination, it will be copied when the modified date is more recent or when the
creation date is more recent. In windows 7 without KB3125574 and in Windows 10 only the last modified date is considered.
Is there a hotfix for this bug?

I've got a robocopy moving a file using /MOV from one folder to another.

Is it possible to add a second destination so that the contents of the original folder will be moved to both destination folders? How would the syntax look? (below is current syntax)

robocopy "\\source path" "\\destination path" /S /E /V /NP /MOV /XD in /R:10 /W:30

A:ROBOCOPY - /MOV to two destination folders

Hi mate.

You could do two things:

1. You can try to use ROBOMOJO to run multiple robocopy jobs
more info here: Running multiple Robocopy jobs in one batch file

2. You can run two separate robocopy jobs, with 10 minute interval between them.
Check this post: One source to multiple destinations with Robocopy

I am trying to use robocopy to backup files over our home network, from my daughters computer, to my backup drive. Unfortunately, she is sharing about 20 folders on her computer, and the only way I can get it to work is to write a separate command for each folder:

robocopy "\\CHRISTINE\Music" "K:\Christine\Music" /mir /z
robocopy "\\CHRISTINE\Photos" "K:\Christine\Photos" /mir /z
robocopy "\\CHRISTINE\Video" "K:\Christine\Video" /mir /z

I tried entering just "\\CHRISTINE" but this results in a path not found error.

Is there a way to get Robocopy to locate all the shared folders on her computer automatically (in case she shares new folders without my knowledge)?

I have created a batch file for copying my Documents folder to an external hard drive:

robocopy C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents J:\Desktop-Backup\Documents /copyall /e /LOG+:c:\users\USERNAME\documents\backuplog.txt

The log file shows that it is backing up C:\users\USERNAME\documents\My Music and C:\users\USERNAME\documents\My Pictures.
That's fine, because I want those backed up anyway, but when I go to J:\desktop-backup\Documents, the Music and Pictures folders aren't there (or anywhere else on the J: drive).
I have "view hidden files and folders" turned on. It seems that the files are actually there because my Documents folder is only 700MB, yet several GB have been taken up on the J: drive.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Hey there,

I'm attempting to use the guide posted on lifehacker to move the users folder to a different drive as W7 is installed on a rather small SSD.

The guide is here: Move the Users Directory in Windows 7

I followed the directions to the letter, except of course, when it came to fixing the drive letters. C: was swapped to e: while the drive that I would like users on is f:

I've tried it with and without /copyall. I've tried changing the switch to - instead of /, and I've tried using /xjd instead. But every single time, robocopy skips 37 (of 195) directories and the process fails.

Does this guide simply not work? Or am I missing something? I'd really like to move the whole thing (especially Appdata), not just documents.

I'm using upgrade media of W7 home premium 64bit and a fresh installation of W7 (unactivated as yet - though I had the same problem before with a fully updated/activated version of windows.)

I doubt it's needed, but specs:
i5 2500k, 8gb ram ddr3-1300, p67 gigabyte motherboard (I can't recall the model offhand), 1tb wd caviar black, 64gb crucial m4, radeon hd 6850. The partition I'm trying to move the users folder to is freshly formatted ntfs with nothing on it as of yet. I checked the drive - it's apparently healthy. It's also only 2 weeks old.

Thanks in advance - this is rather frustrating.

I've had some issues with mirroring my root directory to a backup folder on my netbook in that the backup folder becomes hidden and a system file after Robocopy has run (note the backup folder existed beforehand).
To stop this happening i believe i can include the switch /A-:SH which would remove the system and hidden attributes to the entire backup folder and all folders under it?

However if i wanted to maintain the hidden attribute on a particular folder could i add /A+:H "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder" to the command line as well?
I'm assuming this would have the same affect as attrib +h "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder" ?

I currrently have:-
robocopy /MIR d:\ "//netbook\C Drive\Backup" /XA:S /XD d:\windowsimage d:\downloads d:\bittorrents "d:\bittorrents completed"

I'm intending to change it to:-
robocopy /MIR d:\ "//netbook\C Drive\Backup" /XA:S /A-:SH /A+:H "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder" /XD d:\windowsimage d:\downloads d:\bittorrents "d:\bittorrents completed"

(making all folders unhidden and non-system but add the hidden attribute only to the hidden_folder folder).
Would you say this is correct and will produce my required results?

in my opinion it is strange because you don't use /COPY: or /COPYALL switchers

robocopy /MIR d:\ "//netbook\C Drive\Backup" /XA:S /A-:SH /A+:H "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder" /XD d:\windowsimage d:\downloads d:\bittorrents "d:\bittorrents completed"

In my opinion it won't work. You can't use /A+:,/A-: switchers for only particular objects. You can use it only for all copied objects.
In my opinion it will be appriopriate -unfortunatelly it require two commands:

robocopy /MIR d:\ "//netbook\C Drive\Backup" /XA:S /A-:SH /XD d:\windowsimage d:\downloads d:\bittorrents "d:\bittorrents completed"
attrib +h "//netbook/C Drive/Backup/hidden_folder"

The monitor you have now, as the old monitor you had, should have some buttons or knobs on the front of it. These are used to resize the image, adjust it's position etc. Try them out looking for the obvious such as a knob with an image that looks like it will stretch it etc. Also, you might want to adjust your settings to a different resolution. For example: 800X600, 1024X768 etc. To do that, just right click on an empty space on your desktop, select PROPERTIES, then left click on SETTINGS, then move the slider under SCREEN AREA. Could anyone tell me the best utility for fixing the registry/broken links/shortcuts etc in XP Home. My computer has become quite slow and I think I may have a lot of rubbish cluttering up the system.I do tend to trial a lot of progs and then uninstall them.

A:This question may be in the wrong place

Personally I would not 'fix' anything in the Registry. Yes there may be a few broken links but they will be taking up minimal space and will probably not cause your system to slow down that you would notice.. Better to defrag your hard disc and run something like Cleanup! to clear out your temp files etc.

I got broadband last week and we're only allowed 2GB monthly usage limit (hehe, well it is cheap). I was wondering if streaming videos counts towards this, like does it take up disk space? And is there any chance of viruses? Thanks, pretty random, but I'd like to know.

A:ok this is probably the wrong place, but...youtube

Yes that will count towards your 2GB monthly allowance...everything you get from the internet will count (emails, webpages, videos, music etc).

It does take up disk space but once you clear your temporary internet files, that will solve the problem.

As with the risks of internet use, there is a chance of picking up spyware/viruses by downloading content....but the chances are far less with reputable sites.

Hope that helps :)

A friend has just created a new subdomain of his existing site. If I go to http://www.newsubdomain.existingsite.com, I see the host's generic "new site will be available soon" message. BUT if I go to http://newsubdomain.existingsite.com (that is, the same address, but without the leading "www."), I wind up on the site for some perfectly innocent-looking automotive specialty parts distribution company. (It looks like they mostly sell to retailers, not the public, so it makes no sense at all for them to be complicit in this apparent hijacking, although someone could have put something malicious on their site, I guess.)My computer is a laptop running WinXP Pro. AVG, spybot and Ad-aware scans find nothing amiss. The machine has no other symptoms of any kind of infection, afaict. The problem shows up regardless of whether I use Firefox or IE, but another machine on my home-network does NOT have this problem, so I know it's not a case of my ISP's DNS cache having been poisoned. I did run ipconfig /flushdns from a command prompt; that didn't fix it.Could this just be some simple corrupted record somewhere, or must we conclude a malware infection?TIA!!!

up until today my pc has been working fine, but i have had a few virii detected by AVG that it said it had healed. now i cant browse any web pages to do with virii or anything remotely linked to it as my web browser closes down totally, this is if i use IE, firefox or opera, for instance i cant open the hijack this log forum as my window just shuts down!!

if i try open AVG it gets as far as the grisoft opening page then shuts down before i can do anything, same with system restore, if i click that it tells me it has been switched off through group policy and to contact administrator, for which i have administrator rights on this pc.

i can open every window from control panel, except administrative tools, if i try it just shuts the window down totally, this even happens if i boot up into safe mode, nothing that i know of will help, but then i'm not a pc whizz-kid!!

please help me, i have posted a hijack this log, hopefully someone can stop me throwing my pc out the window in frustration!!

thanks in advance

Hi, has anyone ever experienced this, in Win XP?

I'll try to explain the best I can... my father (on his computer), was playing around with his taskbar putting it on the sides to see if he'd like there, I guess...

Now he's got repeats of his icons from the desktop sitting on his taskbar, fullsize. We tried to delete them, but if we did, they would also delete the twin that's on the desktop. I found this too be so weird, his taskbar is now about an inch and a quarter high, and we could not reduce it.

Has anyone ever seen such a glitch?

I don't think a restore would do anything, it being icons...

Here is the info on my computer

Columbia GX (GA-8SIML) Ver 1.0 µATX motherboard
Name: Columbia GX (GA-8SIML) Ver 1.0

A:New Motherboard (Sorry if in wrong place)

Whats you're goal in replacing the motherboard?

Since you have an older system you would need to upgrade nearly everything if you are looking to get a more modern system. Selling you exisitng system and buying/building a new one would be the smart move.

I Just updated my bios from R1-B4 to R1-C0 and i havnt seen any differnce, bios options are the same, pc still has buggy boots before getting to Operating system select,
so what would a bios update do exsacly?

A:BIOS Updated But.... (Sorry If In Wrong Place)

I can't say without seeing the release notes on the bios update, Generally they will only fix one problem at a time. Often it's compatibility for hardware that you may not even have. Meaning you will be unaffected by the update at all.

For some time now I have had no sound. I think I might have plugged the sound connector into the wrong hole. On the back of my Dell Dimension #2350 PC are 3 holes (one pink, one light blue and one real dark blue). I currently have it plugged into the pink hole & was wondering if I should try one of the other two.

Have I got it connected in the right hole now or would I hurt anything by moving it to one of the other two holes?

I am a beginner and would really appreciate any suggestions and/or help as I really miss the sound, especially on e-mail cards I receive.

A:Have I Got Sound Connected In Wrong Place?

It would not hurt the computer or your speakers to plug it into the other holes.

Make sure your speakers are plugged into the wall (if they are that type of speaker), make sure they are turned on! And turned up! Put in some music, play it, and then plug the speakers into the different ports and see if they work.

If they still don't, let us know and one of us can walk you through it!

My computer wasn't messed up when i first starting using it, but one day I turned on guest and i just started getting used to it. so i always used my guest file and all but a big problem happened some how. instead of my main account (Ben94), Guest became administrator. Now i cant do any features including:
* make new account(when i type something like TEST, it says: you cannot use .,{[}]!?,etc in a account name)
*cant change account types( because i cant make a new account)
* cant give passwords to accounts
* guest cannot check internet connections but ben94 can, but ben94 cant do anything about connections because its a standard account

they are a few things to add to that list but i dont want to go off topic. if there's anyway to fix this, please tell me.

I've installed a windows to go on my USB driver. It works well, but only doesn't work on my own home computer.
The symptom is that it will boot from my hard drive(I've already set the BIOS to boot from USB drive).
I've checked the BCD file in my USB drive, it's normal when booting from other computers. But on my home computer, it will be replaced by another file, which contents are exactly same as BCD file on my hard drive. I don't know why.
So it there anyone who knows about the boot process of windows to go? And how could i solve this problem?

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with Windows XP Pro. I have just changed my email host to lunarpages.com, and configured a new (IMAP) account in my email client Outlook Express per lunarpages instructions. I am able to send and receive emails, but the sent mails are being saved in the ‘Sent Items’ folder in Local Folders rather than in the IMAP account. Anybody know how to make them appear in a ‘sent items’ folder in the IMAP account? I’d ask tech support at lunarpages, but they’re gone until Tuesday.
