Hi. My HP Pavillion stopped working, I believed it to be the battery going dead. So I plugged it in to charge, but now it fails to start up. Screen and fan come on for about half a second and then switches off. If I take the battery out, it won't do anything at all. The white led next to the power port is orange when battery is on the computer, white when battery is off.Any ideas please, my wife needs the computer to continue her studies.Could the battery be faulty and not letting the computer boot up? Why isn't the computer turning on without the battery? I thought it could run with it off. Could the charger be faulty? Thanks in advance.Read other answers
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I'm trying to fix my roommate's computer for him, but I'm pretty stumped at this point.
It's an HP Pavillion Media Center m8400f
Came with Vista, but now running Windows 7 Pro.
Basically what happens is as soon as it receives power, all of the fans start running immediately. When you press the power button they slow/stop and the system starts up.
If you shut down normally from Windows, the fan on the video card still stays running indefinitely.
Also the power button does nothing else. Once it's running, the power button won't put it to sleep, won't shut it down if you hold it, nothing.
I've run diagnostics and everything passes. I cleaned it out. Updated the BIOS from the HP site. Looked in BIOS for any settings that may relate to power and/or fans, but there's nothing relevant.
He's had this for a couple years and apparently this problem started a few months after he got it... and it was all of a sudden. He's never installed any other hardware or anything, and all that's connected is mouse, keyboard, monitor, and ethernet.
Any help or insight into this would be greatly appreciated.
I think I may have narrowed down the problem... the video card doesn't display red anymore (I checked with another monitor to make sure). Between that and the video card fan problems, I'm hoping replacing that will do the trick.
When my computer is turned off it does not start back up when it is turned back on.The fan comes on and the sceen shows some backlighting. The control alt delete command depowers the machine, as does the power button. This happened several times before. After repetitive start attempts it staqrted up.The "hard start" proceedure does not start the macineOn the last start-up I recieved the message of an abnormal start-up on the previous start-up. I used the choice ot using the MS routine to troubleshoot and fix. It went through the routine, reported problems fixed and staqrted up normally. When the computer was subsequently shut down it did not startv up, just the fan and the dim glow.Read other answers
Hi, I am using my HP pav laptop for more than 3 years. I do not have the exact model number in my mind. I will post it after wards. The problem is my laptop was overheating then suddenly it switched off. I closed my laptop and waited for it to cool down. After 3-4 hours I tried to start the laptop again, it switched on and then it went blank. Since, then it did not switch on.Below given is the total info: - 1. The red blinking light on the keyboard works blinks once when I press the power button.2. The LED light beside the charger is working fine.3. I tried doing a hard reset but it did not work. Can you please help me as to what should be done now?
[email protected]_val, Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion g6 Notebook and overheating and shutting down. Here is a link to overheating, as this might be the cause of the shutting down. If the Notebook has dust on the fans it could be overheating. If that does not help at the end of this document it shows you to do a Hardware Test. The final thing you should try is to restore the BIOS to factory defaults. F10 at the starting of the Notebook. Hope this helps. Please get back to me how this goes. If you wish to say Thanks for my efforts to help, click the Thumbs up to give me a Kudos. Thanks.Read other 1 answers
Starts up to a screen like this: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QScoPko6XN...r+Recovery.png
Startup repair failed, leads to a blank blue screen with an arrow.
Tried to start windows normally, but once it's about to go to the login screen, it restarts again.
What can I do to start my laptop up again without losing any data?
Hi and Welcome to TSF!
Can you explain the blue screen with a arrow a bit more clearly? Do you see any STOP codes?
Do you have your original Windows CD?
I am writing in regards to my HP Pavilion dv4000 which runs Windows XP (I'm not sure if there is more info needed). Anyway, I am writing because recently my computer started freezing some while I was typing, then freezing completely after 10 minutes or so. After another day or two, it would freeze in the middle of starting up (even in safe mode). I've tried doing a system restore but it freezes in the middle of this as well. Now it will make noises like it is starting up and the lights on the keyboard comes up, but the screen is black. I am not sure what is wrong. I read a post on here about the DVD drive causing a similar problem, but I don't know if that is the same thing or not. If anyone knows what may be causing this or what steps I can take to find out I would greatly appreciate it.
Hi all,I plugged my laptop into my tv via hdmi. The screen glitches for a moment and then the entire laptop turned off. This hasn't been an issue previously. It will no longer turn on, I've tried the hard reset by holding the power button to no avail. Tried booting with the battery in and out, mains only and all sorts. The pc is still receiving power because the charger light is on when the charger is plugged in and the light flicks off for roughly 2-3seconds while pressing the on button but nothing else happens. No sounds or any other lights. Can anyone help out?Thank you,Read other answers
At first the computer wouldn't boot and went to the recovery options screen instead, I tried the restore option but it shut down half way through. Now when I switch it on I just get the hp logo for a few seconds and then it restarts. It will not boot from usb either.Read other answers

i have an hp pavilion laptop that wont start up
the lights come on...but there is nobody home...(no xp home anyway) [was that cheesy or what?]
there is one long beep followed by two short beeps...
but after 20 attempts i did get it working once...how is this possible...
then when i restarted it ...the beeps again...
please advise me...following my cheesiness...
Do you get to see the POST screens at all or is it just blank?
Can you get into the BIOS settings? Any error messages at all?
I not good at translating system error beeps anymore.
My initial guess is either your RAM or your hard drive is faulty.
My computer take a long time to start up with the icons on the desktop flick on and off several times during this time.
Any suggestions what to do?

Hi Guys and Gals, Details first: Pavillion 11 x360 PC - born on the 22nd December 2014 (quite newish...) Upon start-up it occasionally goes into the black start up page giving me options to run checks on the hardware (akin to pressing the 'esc' key on start-up). I've taken it back to PC World FOUR times and it always come back as OK but then it starts again. Anyway, eventually I surrendered and gave in and ran the Hardware Diagnostics UEFI myself. I have also uninstalled the McAfee anti-virus programme I had installed as I read this could cause a problem. I uninstalled this via the Control Panel. Could there be a residual bit of it hidden on the laptop somewhere? I have tried to run memtest86+ on it and it does the same thing, runs for a bit but then the machine shuts down. I did notice while running memtest that one of the categories.. Chipset stated it was disabled, is that a sign of a dead motherboard??

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips, Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out
As I understand the computer is powering on but there's no display on the screen, The computer turns off after a few seconds after it's turned on,
To provide an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
What is the product number of this computer? (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
Was there any update/reset interrupted, recently?
Have you performed any steps on your own before posting on the HP Forums?
In the meantime, you perform the below steps:
Perform a Hard reset on the notebook (Click here for details)
If the computer still turns off every few seconds, try with an alternate adapter and/or remove the battery and try turning on the computer without the battery,
only connect the adapter and start, let me know if that works.

My laptop was working fine, then I attempted to install a product from Microsoft partner called SCANGUARD. After logging off, and trying to get back on later, it will not start up. The message states"Windows failed to start, recent hardware or software changes may be the cause" Then there were two options- LAUNCH STARTUP REPAIR (which was recommended), or START WINDOWS NORMALLY. Once it "launched windows start up repair", it went to a boxed in message with several different statements about certain things on the system as part of the scan, then it stated "Couldn't perform screening, because couldnt detect two HDD's on this system". It just does a continual loop of the same. Any ideas what I can do to get it working again, without needing to take it to a shop? I have found several references to this same error issue on U-TUBE regarding desk top systems, and needing to remove their memory sticks to figure it out, but nothing on laptops. And the desktop systems do not lead to the last boxed in message regarding not having two HDD's, whatever that means. I would really appreciate someones help with this proplem. Thanks for your time.Read other answers
A neighbor brought down their HP Pavillion a705w PC saying the machine wouldn't start. Sure enough, wouldn't start. No fans coming on (even in the PSU), no lights coming on other than the green light on the PSU (which shows availability of AC Power; it stays on while the AC Cord is plugged in).
Dragged out my trusty Antec Power Supply tester; green light comes on, Power Supply should be OK. Checked the On switch wiring at the MOBO connector; ohmmeter shows switch is dropping to about 1 ohm when depressed. Pulled the CMOS battery, waited 30 seconds, found the CMOS clear jumper (I think; JP1 on the lower right corner of the MOBO is marked BAT1). No joy there either. Still no start up.
Had a new ATX 500 watt supply on hand; tested it with the Antec Power supply tester; green light comes on, shows new Power supply OK. Plugged that into MOBO temporarily, no start-up then either.
Looks like bad MOBO from where I'm sitting. Just looking for confirmation from you experts.

I've only had this laptop a few months, and even when I first got it, its had an extremely slow start up. It shows a blue screen with the mouse pointer for about 3-4minutes.
Its got Vista built in, looking at downgrading stuff back to XP looks difficult so I've thrown that idea out the window. I've tried disabling loads of start up programs, that doesn't even slightly help.
I have 2gig of ram, how can this happen?!

I have been using this computer since 2006 for business aplications that will not run on later Windows OS. Just the other day I ran it and all was fine. Shut down was normal. I used the standard shut down process for Windows XP. When I tried to start up I pushed the button on the front of the tower and nothing happened. no lights, no fans started, no hard drive activity. It was like I did not have the power plugged in. I checked the power cord and there is a little green light glowing just under the plug at the back of the case. I unplugged and opened the case and checked the wires to the switch. All seems normal. I have not checked to see if there is power to the mother board and I really don't know where to incert test probes or what settings I should use on my Ome meter. My first inclination is to get a new Power Supply and I ordered one from Amazon which should arrive this week. Does anyone have another idea of how I can resolve this issue? Thanks in advance.
@GENEXPLOVER?, welcome to the forum. I believe that your new power supply unit (PSU) will fix the problem. The symptoms that you are experincing sound like a failed PSU. Could you fill out your system specs - System Info - See Your System Specs
Try running the system file checker first see what that comes back with - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Or you could try a system restore to before the issue occured - System Restore

I have my laptop over two years but the problem occured abouter about 1 and a half. I care for it well, have never dropped it, over charged it, gotten it wet. The Laptop all of a sudden wouldn't start on the battery charge. There was a boot screen showing when i plugged it in saying there was an issue with the battery and that it has low capacity and should be replaced. However it was working 100% up until then, and I find it hard to believe that overnight it could fail without any physical damage being done to it. I now have to plug my laptop in for it to turn on.I have looked around and found that it might be a driver issue - all instructions say to turn off take out battery etc... but my batter doesn't come out easily, you have to dissassemble the whole thing. is there something I can do to search for driver errors and fix them - a free programme? Or if its another issue please let me know. I'm happy to give more info if you have questions Thanks a lot.Read other answers
Ok here is my issue i have a few other threads out there but nothing solid yet. I am working on a Hp pavilion a6244n in the begining the issue was the video card was causing pink screen and blured screen, then upadated video driver still no good. did the system restore and still nothing, tried the automatic startup fix and it could not fix.Did a complete system format with manufactured instruction completly wiped drive and purchased new Hp software and installed. Got everything installed and after installing 93 updates it started acting up again not wanting to start so did hp hard drive test came back fine, swapped out HD with new drive and reistalled OS and after all updates continued to not want to start windowsdid a memory test that was recomended to download and restarted and ran test came out fine. Was instructed that it was bad hardware so i purchased a duplicate board but refured and installed everything started up and got most everything installed and it started again. I tried resetting bios pulling out battery and clearing jumper. That worked fine and now after everything im sitting here ive tried to restart the pc 7 times and it shows the microsoft bar moving across the screen then the lights on the key board go out and the screen goes black but i can see a little bit of light on the bottom and the top like light bulbs or something but pc is still on and running but HD light not flashing. so any ideas would be great.
Try booting to last known good configuration. Start your system and start pressing F8 on the keyboard. Before you see the Windows Vista load screen, you should be prompted with a list of options. Use the keyboard to select the "Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced)" option. See if that works.
If that does not work, then I suggest you get a Windows Vista installation disc, restart your system and boot to the disc. On the first window just select the language you want, click next, and then click on the Repair link at the bottom left of the screen.
You'll end up at the System Recovery Options area. Select Command Prompt and enter the following:
chkdsk /r c:
It will most likely want to restart and will take time.
If that doesn't fix it, go back into disc, command prompt, and run sfc /scannow.
Again, if that doesn't fix it, back into disc, back to System Recovery Options, and run a startup repair.

I am trying to dagnose a problem with my sister's PC (formerly mine). It is a Dell Inspiron from about 2009, running Vista.
Upon start up the fans all turn on, and then off, and then on, and then off, and then the third time they stay on, the hard drive seems to kick on and the fans settle down to normal speed but no signal is being sent to the monitor.
I took a video.
(You should have seen how dusty it was before I took the video... i didn't get all the wires)
I went to use my computer today and whenever i open the start menu and click on a folder to open an application, in the programs menu the start menu closes. As well I've noticed that some open windows flash/blink randomly. I don't care about the blinking but i'm not able to access the programs in the start menu. It works if i switch it back to classic view but i want to use the vista setup. Any help?

All i want is the file(s) to put on a memory stick and put it into my HP, hold windows+B and hopefully it works?

(Notes: Not 100% certain of the OS, but I know it's something Windows 8) So the other day, I had to factory reset my laptop because it started freezing within minutes of loggin on. Wiped everything and had to re-download everything. After it reset, I situated my settings and everything and re-installed a few games and basic programs (iTunes and Chrome). It worked perfectly fine for another day, then my mouse pad froze (keyboard still functioned) so I just force quit the internet browser and forced it to shut down. Upon trying to restart it, I got the hp logo and circular "loading" icon, which lasts for about 3-5 minutes, and then it just goes to a blank screen. The fan is running pretty fast and everything seems to be capable of working, just a blank screen though. I tried hard resets, BIOS recovery and reinstalling the memory modules, all to no avail. Just ran a system extensive test and it reads:"Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: 0LWD5A-7338GT-MFPV6J-60VG03PRODUCT ID: F9M03UA#ABAHard Drive 1" So what is going on here, why did this happen, and how do I fix it?

Ok, so This is a bit of a story.I'm a student and i'm not all that tech savvy. I know about hard resets and system restores and have done that ilk in the past, but i'm not that confident when it comes to machines. Christmas of 2015 i got my laptop to help me with my final year of HS. The Pavillion x360. It was very very fast and i have very few programms installed on it. I do all my school work on it and only use it for occasionally playing small steam games or watching YouTube or Netflix. Nothing big at all. But in the past 4-5 weeks it's gotten increacingly slow and is now at the stage where it takes between 12-17 minutes to start up when only 5 months ago it took less than 30 seconds. It takes 2 or three tries to get it to start up as well, the first few stating 'Boot Selection Failed'. I have no access to the BIDOS or whats-it's-name system and I can't do a system restore as it crashes each time. I've done a lot of virus scans and defragmented the disk, shredded all loose files and everything McAfee reccommends to speed up the laptop but to no avail. If i leave the pc for 3 or 4 minutes and it goes to sleep, it won't wake up. At all. The caps-lock light or the mute light won't turn on when it's asleep and i can't wake it up at all. the only thing that works is holding the power button for around 30 seconds till it goes off then turning it back on and starting the whole polava again. Turning it on means waiting for a minute for it to register... Read moreRead other answers
I have an Hp s5213w slimline desktop computer it originally came with windows 7 but I recently had put Windows 8.1 on it.It was running fine but then I shut it down one night,Then the next day I went to power it up to boot as usual. When I turned it on it would get to Windows 8.1 boot then shut down. After this I checked the power plug to make sure the power cord was not loose it was fine.I have been trying to keep turning it on but no luck sometimes it will get to the hp boot screen sometimes not so lucky,After attempting that it wouldn't even show the hp bootscreen anyone have a suggestion why this does this ? I hate to throw money into a computer for parts that I do not need I was told maybe it was the power supply or the hard drive. Can Anyone help ?
Since you recently installed Windows 8.1 I'm guessing that you have the installation disc?
If you do, see if you can boot from the disc.
Another way to accomplish the same thing would be to boot into the BIOS.
If you can do either of these without the computer shutting down this could be a software problem. If it still shuts down it's time to start looking at hardware.
The PSU would be one of the possibilities. There is a way to test this, but it would mean having to open the case so that you can access the 24 pin PSU connector on the motherboard.
I powered down the machine yesterday (Shut Down) and now this morning the computer will not boot.
When I try to boot the machine the BIOS screen does not appear, the HD light flickers on but then stays off. All other lights on the machine are on as normal. The fan kicks in within 30 seconds and sounds like it's running at maximum revs.
I did a hard reset and reseated the HD and the RAM and replaced the RTC battery without fixing the issue.
I will disassemble the unit and make sure the fan is not clogged, in the meantime does anyone have any thoughts ?
The motherboard has probably failed do to consistent overheating over time...

Anyone with an HP keyboard that has hot keys and volume contol feature may have run into this.
I have an HP 8550C Paviion with a keyboard where I can enable the hotkeys. ( keys on the keyboard that I can set up to link to websites directly from the keyboard). This also activates the volume control knob.( located on the keyboard)
Everytime I re-boot my computer , this feature is disabled and I have to re-enable the feature under control panel/keyboard. Everything will again works fine until the next re-boot
I checked my startup and the keyboard manager is selected at start-up.
Running win98 and I have downloaded the HP keyboard upgrade thinking bthis would solve the problem , but it hasn't.

Hi, anyone can help me establish why my screen stay white after switched on, I can hear in the background that laptop is start up but nothing is on the display
I can tell you how to check what?s going wrong here?
You need an external monitor and need to connect the unit to this monitor.
If you will not be able to see something on the 2nd screen, then I would assume that your graphic card chip is not OK.
If something would be visible on the 2nd monitor, then a internal display problem might be the reason for your issue
The computer had been working fine before, but now it is stuck on a black screen saying things like "memory bank 1: not installed" and other various banks up to 4 which say "2048 MB/DDR3 SDRAM" and also "initializing USB controllers...done".
I tried shutting the power off and on but the same screen stays.
It also says to press F10 to enter setup but when I press the key, nothing works and is completely stuck.
Mate first reseat all the sticks and clan the slots if it is an older machine
Now as for the slots to clean them use astrip of old credit card about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them offhold apiece of thin lint free cloth over the end dab on some form of alcohol - isopropyl alcohol (what we swab the skin with before an injection) is good and GENTLY swipe along the slots.
This can also be done for the GPU slot/s.
then run this if it does not function
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html this one you will need to make a bootable disk set the BIOSto optical (or USB if preferred) boot the machine and let it run for at LEAST 8 passesunless the errors come upstraight away. Takes a fair time to complete and some leave it runningovernight.
If you do get errors and have morethan one stick then you will need to test each one separately and maybe even inthe separate slots.
