Left TrackPoint button intermittent unresponsive (X1C6)

Q: Left TrackPoint button intermittent unresponsive (X1C6)

I've had this problem before and had a replacement, but in the replaced machine the problem came back. Especially when pressing the button all the way on the left side it is sometimes unresponsive even though it makes a clicking noise. But sometimes it works, so maybe it is caused by dust? Is anyone else having this problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello community I have this old  thinkpad, which i am very fond of. However, recently the touchpad and trackpoint are acting up.Both right-buttons have stopped working. If i right click on the desktop, nothing happens - until i left-click... then the context-menu keeps popping up until i click on something else. Eventually both left buttons also stop working. I then have to press ctrl alt del and move the mouse over the on-screen-buttons initially they do not respond. after a while they become active again. Then the left button works for a little while until it starts over again... have tried updating drivers, removing the touchpad and trackpoint,  reinstalling windows 10 and flashing newest BIOS without any improvement. External mouse works flawlessly,,, Suggestions are most appreciated :-) Thanks, Kasper, Denmark

Got a T440s Touch. Trackpad looks fine but the left side is slightly tilted compared to the right. Clicking the buttons at the bottom work and the right TrackPoint button at the top of the tochpad works, as does the centre scroll button, but the left one doesn't. The left button doesn't seem to click - can this be fixed easily? Have tried playing around with drivers, blowing compressed air into the trackpad, updating BIOS, enabling/disabling TrackPoint in the BIOS but all to no avail. Any ideas? If the worst comes to the worst I have an L540 - can I swap the trackpads over?

I have upgraded my old T410i with some extra RAM and an SSD. The system works great and fast. There is one problem. I have noticed that although my trackpoint and right and middle button (above trackpad) work like the should the left button (above trackpad) doesn't. I thought this has to work like the left mouse button or the left button under the trackpad but it doesn't. I have the latest bios version 1.45 installed and the latest drivers. I have also tried to detach the keyboard and attached it again. After that I tried to disable the trackpoint in the bios and enable it again. This doesn't help either. Maybe it is a defective key because all the other functions and keys do work. Is there something overlook?

Even while typing the subject line of this thread, I had to retype it a couple of times as the left button triggered unknown clicks on the web page loading another while my left thumb unintentionally and inevitably rested on it. Happening quite frequently with random cliks being registered. Adjusting sensitivity of the trackpoint or touchpad does not have any effect. I don't see any other settings. Did anyone ever face this? Is there perhaps a firmware/software approach to fix such things? I jut bought this Yoga in November, did not start to really use it since a few days ago and is why I just noticed this way after the return period, and I don't want to go to the hassle of warranty claim if there's a software workaround.

Brand new 5th gen X1 Carbon here.  The left button seems like it misses a click every 10th or 20th time, particularly if I click on the right side, where your thumb rests naturally. I found a couple of threads indicating that this was a known problem with previous generations.  ("Known" in the sense that a Lenovo tech confirmed it was a design flaw - too wide of a button with only one microswitch underneath.) Was this issue fixed, and maybe I just have a bad unit?  Or is it an ongoing problem?  The reason I ask is that I'm still within the holiday return period, and I don't want to try to have the machine repaired, only to fall outside the return period and discover that I have to live with the problem forever.

I've been having fun with the new T480, except for a problem with the trackpoint. I don't use the trackpoint for much, but I do use its buttons at the top of the touchpad. I noticed that the buttons were not working, which led me to try and see if the red stick was working. When the buttons stop, the red stick stops too. The trackpoint will just stop working, and I can't see any pattern to what causes it to quit.  I was worried that it was a hardware problem, and it might be, but if I go to the settings and disable, then re-enable the trackpoint, it usually starts working immediately. The computer is only two weeks old, and is under warranty, but being without it while I send it in for service is far more expensive to me than buying new parts and installing them myself. But is there a good strategy for exhausting software problems first? The Lenovo vantage update system seems to think everything is up to date. While I've been composing this post, it has started and stopped working twice.

When moving the mouser cursor with the trackpad, pressing or releasing any of the three TrackPoint buttons will randomly makes the trackpad unresponsive 50% of the time. The cursor will eventually resume movement if you keep moving your finger. This makes clicking and dragging fail most of the time. This does NOT apply to:1. Moving the cursor with the trackpad and pressing the lower-left or lower-right trackpad buttons instead of the trackpoint buttons.2. Moving the cursor with the trackpoint nub and pressing the trackpad or trackpoint buttons. To reieterate the problem is exclusively when using the trackpoint buttons WHILE dragging on the trackpad. I'm using Windows 10 Pro with the latest Synaptics firmware installed (n2hgc06w.exe installed firmware pr3013337-tm-p3467-010.img) and the latest Elan driver installed (n2hg404w.exe). This is on a brand new X1 Carbon Gen 7 I received yesterday (model 20R1S04100) with all BIOS updates applied. This *exact* same behavior happens with Ubuntu 19.10 so clearly it is not a Windows 10 or Windows driver issue, but a firmware one.Are there any solutions? It really does make the trackpad unusable...

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

I have a Toshiba Satellite L4550-S5976 running under Windows 7. When I start it up (and if I catch it at the right time), the touchpad buttons work fine for a few minutes. After the machine completely boots, the touchpad button problems start - the left button performs as the right button and the right button does nothing.

On a lark, I plugged in a USB mouse and rebooted. When I do that, the mouse works fine AND the touchpad buttons work properly. Carrying around a mouse isn't always convenient so I'd like to have the machine work as expected.

I tried updating the touchpad drivers - that did not fix the problem. I even reinstalled Windows 7 on the machine - that did not fix the problem either.

Any ideas what I could do next to fix this problem?

Thanks, Brian

I find my mouse click often not registering and I need to click multiple times for the action to execute. This isn't a matter of lag because I tried waiting a while and the action never executes unless if I click it multiple times. This is really frustrating. My old T420s never had this issue.  It might be worth mentioning that I also have a problem with the trackpoint scrolling which if I scroll in the vertical direction, it first registers as a horizontal scroll icon and doesn't change to vertical unless if I press down hard and the page ends up jumping from the pressure. I can't gradually scroll. Several other people mentioned this issue in a separate thread but no fix was ever proposed.  I'm wondering if the two are related in that they could be some I/O communication issue between the trackpoint and some controller.

Man this feels weird. I'm usually the one giving help, not asking for it lol.

Computer:

This problem started after I left my computer on sleep for a couple hours. When I woke it up, the touchpad taps and left mouse button clicks brought up the right-click context menu and nothing on the taskbar responded to the cursor hovering over it. Also for some reason pressing the Windows key on the keyboard wouldn't bring up the Start menu. The only way I've found to correct this is to plug in a USB mouse and press the right MB on it. I also was able to fix it one time by uninstalling the Synaptics drivers and letting Windows restart and find the mouse, but after trying to reinstall the Synaptics drivers then uninstalling them again after the problem reappeared this method no longer works. In either case left click functionality is restored but there is no right click functionality period on the touchpad/buttons. However the USB mouse that I plug in works normally. Also after left click is restored, everything on the taskbar and elsewhere responds as it should with the exception of not being able to right click on anything (which sucks in W7). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Synaptics drivers to see if that would fix it but after reinstalling them and restarting, the problem came back. Another thing I've noticed is that even with the Synaptics drivers installed the vertical scroll area doesn't respond.... Read more

Hey! I'm quite happy with my new P1 2nd Gen, except the pointing devices suck. Lenovo seems to have switched the TrackPoint to ALPS which comes very stiff, choppy and inaccurate. I played around with udev rules and acceleration settings which made it a bit better, but it is still far from the awesome accuracy and smoothness of the W540, my last machine. Same with the three buttons on top of the TrackPad - especially the left one doesn't react reliably when hit on the lower right corner. I have to press a second time every ten clicks or so. This definitely sucks, so my question is: Is anyone aware of other manufacturers/options of especially TrackPoints and TouchPad-buttons for the P1 apart from ALPS? BestMarkus

Hello, I'm having a problem with my Thinkpad L430. The right bottom button on the Touchpad is registering as a left click rather than a right click (which normally brings up the pop-up menu. It is enabled and is set to this in the Elan software. I've also tried changing the command, however it simply doesn't work. When I click the 'mouse button reverse' option in Windows, the left click brings up the pop-up menu, so it probably isn't a software issue but to get a second opinion would be great. I have all of the latest drivers and software updates, and the Elan software is set up to default. I have also completely reinstalled Windows and rolling back to an earlier driver version, but it still isn't working. Any advice on how to make the right button work again would be greatly appreciated! I'm running Windows 7. Thanks.

Hi,

On my X1Y3 it started about a month ago.  Bascially after anywhere from 5-30 minutes of the computer turning on my trackpoint icon gets stuck with the middle scrolling point icon anytime im in a text field.  It acts like the middle track point buttoin is depressed even when its not.  see below picture circled in yellow.  This is not related to a specific browser.  It happens in Chrome, IE and Edge.  Synaptics driver version 19.3.4.224.  I updated to the current driver about 3 weeks ago when this problem 1st started.  It happened on the prior driver too.

So, I got this computer a few days ago and it works great. Only problem is that every time I switch out of tablet mode or if I open it, my cursor moves up, and I have to tap the trackpoint a lot in order for it to stop. I took it off and I realized that if I hold down the b button hard enough, it actually moves the cursor up. Is there any way to fix this irregular trackpoint behavior? It's probably hardware related, so I might have to send it in for repair (ugh).

Hello. I am having a very strange issue with my old Windows Vista desktop which is too peculiar to find a solution to through google searches, so I am going to try posting it on here.

This problem seems to only occur after leaving my computer running for extended periods of time, usually overnight. This doesn't ALWAYS happen after leaving it running overnight though. Usually when this happens, I have nothing open or running on the computer except Spotify.

When this issue occurs, the computer is mostly unresponsive. I can move my mouse and open the start menu, but the popout box of the start menu that contains the shut down, restart, sleep etc. options will not open and does nothing when I click on it. Attempting to start task manager from right clicking my taskbar does nothing. Ctrl-Alt-Dlt does nothing. Spotify is usually unresponsive, and clicking on anything in the program does nothing, but I can however minimise or reopen it. I also have an error message at the top of the Spotify window that says there is no internet connection. I cannot open up any new programs.

When this problem occurs, the only thing that I seem to be able to do is a forced shutdown by holding the power button, and then restarting the system. Sometimes after doing a forced shutdown like this, I will get a hard-disk error after rebooting the PC, and will have to turn it off and on again multiple times until I can get into the login menu.

Hi Lenovo, Currently the Trackpoint's middle button can only do either scrolling or middle mouse button click in Windows. This behavior can be set in lenovo vantage or mouse settings. Could you provide option to enable both scrolling and middle mouse click functions at same time? In linux this is already supported out of the box for a long time. The only workaround in windows is by using third party software called TPMiddle, but this software only works with Synaptics trackpoint, it doesn't work with Elan or ALPS trackpoint.

Hi, guys.

I'm new here, and I have a strange problem. I don't know if it's my OS, my video card, or whatever. Hopefully, you guys will be able to tell me . . .

When I leave my PC idle for about 30 minutes, the screen goes black and stays that way as if the PC has crashed. I move the mouse about and hit the keys on the keyboard, but nothing works: the screen just stays black. In fact, even the little lights on the keyboard (e.g., the Caps Lock light) don't work. Everything just dies.

Whenever this weird crash thingy happens, I have to reboot my PC, after which everything starts to work again. It happens every time I leave the PC idle. It also happened once when I tried to play a video.

I've had the PC for a few years. It's never done this before. The problem's not being caused by any settings.

My OS is XP Pro, and I'm using Service Pack 3. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hello.

When I left click I sometimes have to click the button several times for it to respond. The right click works perfectly - there are no problems with it.
Naturally I tried switching the primary and secondary buttons in the 'Mouse' options, but the problem remains - the left click (right mouse button) is unresponsive, just as the left mouse button was before I switched them (the right click still works perfectly with the left mouse button).

This same problem persists with several different mouses, so I am sure the problem isn't the mouse itself.

I recently formatted and reinstalled Windows XP Media Center and I'm not sure if that is where the problem began.

My PS/2 Compatible Mouse driver details reads: "File version 5.1.2600.2180(xpsp_sp2.rtm.040803-2158"

What steps do you recommend me taking? Are there any additional information you would like to have?
Please write some simple instructions when asking for information which might be hard to find, to avoid the cause for me to post "how" and having to wait for a delayed period of time to find out how to provide you with the information you require.

Sorry for posting a reply so soon, but I am not able to find any way to edit my previous post.

Yes, there was a post several years ago describing this same issue which was supposedly fixed with an update of the Synaptics driver.  However, I am seeing this issue again on my X270 Windows 10 x64 Pro with latest driver version 19.3.4.219. If I set the mouse pointer size to something larger than default "1" it stays at the larger size until I use the trackpoint middle button to scroll.  the pointer then shrinks back down to size "1".  Just as with the previous report of this issue if I set the middle button function to "click" rather than "scroll" the pointer retains its larger size.  I constantly use trackpoint scrolling so that is not really a fix for me. Has anyone else seen this issue recently and perhaps found a fix that allows continued use of trackpoint scrolling with a larger pointer? Thanks.

Hi, yesterday I got my new parts for the upgrade my pc has been dying for.

I got an NZXT Hades case, a Phenom II 965 BE (the C3 one) an AsRock 880gxh motherboard, 2 sticks of OCZ Gold DDR3 and a arctic freezer 7 pro for good measure. Now it wasn't the first time I've built a system from scratch so I knew what I was doing to an extent and eventually I had it up and running including the old parts required from my previous system; HDD, 2 DVD Drives (1 RW), my HIS Radeon 3870xt and my 500w Aspire PSU.

Now the first odd thing I noticed upon plugging in the PSU's powerchord and flicking the switch was that my USB mouse and my PS/2 keyboard lit up before I'd pushed the power button. Upon pressing it, it powered up as you would expect but once at the welcome screen the mouse wouldn't move, eventually I sussed that it was a driver issue so I fixed that, baring in mind I had powered down several times by now with no issues turning it back on. Finally got things 'right' and had it on for a good few hours. I shut it down as I went to bed (had to hold down the power button as a game had crashed and a simple press of the button did nothing) and flicked the switch on the power supply as the mouse and keyboard didn't go off when the system shutdown. I come to it this morning, flicked the PSU switch and the mouse came on along with the keyboard. However pressing the power switch resulted in NOTHING.

I looked into the case and realised I had mixed up... Read more

I am using Win XP on Sony Vaio PC and my start button has become unresponsive. Everything else on my computer seems to be OK, but when I click the start button, the window pops up, but when I try to click on anything in the box, I hear that "ding" sound and nothing happens! Help. I'm not very tech savy, maybe just a setting wrong or something simple, I hope. Thanks for any help, Ramona

It seems randomly my Start button does not respond to clicks. The Windows button on my keyboard only brings up the Start Menu about 30% of the time (I have to spam it repeatedly). Along with the Start button problem, Alt-Tabbing no longer works.

These two problems usually don't occur as soon as I boot up, but I can't identify what causes them either. Any help?

I'm having issues with my windows start button and taskbar. I had a topic in the malware removal section and believe all the issues there were solved. Here is a link to that topic.

When I start my computer I can choose programs that have icons on my desktop almost instantly after reaching the desktop screen. These same programs on my task-bar aren't accessible though. the windows start button wont click and in my notification area avast loads by the clock but volume control and the others don't. When I scroll over the task-bar my cursor turns into an hour glass as if it is still trying to load but the problem continues even after five minutes of it being on so, far I have had it snap out of it once, but every other time it remains in this state after start up. As I am typing this my task-bar just became click-able and my volume control is now showing, avast updated as well. It has taken at least half an hour for this to happen though. How can i make it load on start up like it should?

I came across a very frustrating issue with Windows 10 today that caused my Start button and Cortana to become completely unresponsive. I spent a couple hours trying to troubleshoot this and came back here where I'd found so many helpful solutions a long time ago.

Here's what @lochlomonder suggested:

Okay, since Windows 10 doesn't normally shut down fully, hold down the Windows and R keys together to get the Run dialogue box open, type in cmd, and then hit Enter. Within the Command Prompt dialogue box, type in the following and then hit Enter: shutdown /s /t 0 (that's a zero at the end). Note: this will turn off your PC, so ensure you've saved all your files and exited applications properly.
Once the PC shut down fully, I started it back up and my Start button and Cortana came back to life. Thanks!
