My External Hard Drive Runs a Auto 'Sleep' Mode

Q: My External Hard Drive Runs a Auto 'Sleep' Mode

Right, I have a Seagate 250GB external hard drive that runs through a USB port on my Windows XP laptop.

The Hard drive Runs a auto 'Sleep' Mode after about 10 - 15 mins of not being accessed manually through the OS Folders. It then has to 'Wake-up' again which is affecting the way programs, music etc are run off of it.

Ive contacted Seagate and they say there isn't a way to disable this function, but there has to be something that can keep it 'awake' all the time.

So i thought I'd ask you guys, Hope you can help me.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

As per title.

Hitachi Touro 4TB USB3 external drive ejects during sleep mode and often is not acessable or listed in My Computer. It is however listed in the attached SATA drives in the Notification Area and is listed in Devices and Printers.

When this happens the PC hangs during a restart. I suspect because it is waiting for a drive to spin down that isn't connected.

I'm using the latest USB 3 driver from Intel for my board (Asus X99-A) and have tried turning off the option to turn off the drive to save power in device manager.

It still intermittently ejects and won't reconnect after sleep mode though.

Coming out of sleep mode I notice there is the sound of a USB device physically being unplugged and then plugged back in again, yet the drive remains inaccessible.

Please help, it's becoming annoying.

A:USB3 External Drive Ejects in Sleep Mode

Hello elbeasto!

This could be a sign of the drive itself having issues. I would suggest you to firstly check the drive's health, the manufacturer should have a software for a scan.

Use a different USB cable as well, and check if you need to install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.

Try the drive on another system, does it do the same?

I have a couple of different SATA III hard drives, 3.5 inch form factor. i have them in an Icy Box USB 3 case. i believe they run very slowly, far slower than if connected to the normal SATA cables to the MB. I don't know if I am expecting too much, are there any tests I can do to see if there is a real issue please? OS is Win 7 64 bit pro, and the USB drivers are up to date.

caveat: I damaged a USB3 header for the front USB3 ports lead, on the MB and snapped a pin. So rather than buy a new MB I added a USB3 PCIe card and ran the front two ports to the card. I would *MUCH* rather use the front ports, and I have to admit I have not tried the Icy Box hard drive on a rear USB3 port yet. But I would like to determine if I have been a tight wad and should have just replaced the MB.... Thanks for reading, and for any replies!

Further, my MB does not have an eSATA port, would adding a card supporting eSATA give a speed benefit above a correctly functioning USB3 port?

A:External SATA III USB hard drive runs slowly, how to test speed?

Data transfers to USB drives do seem to be slower than transfers to internal drives and I also have slowness with the front USB 2.0 ports. I use this product in my computer:
4-port USB 2.0 High Speed Front-Bay Hub - Black | C2G
Power comes from the PC's power supply and the data cable plugs into a port on the rear.
Haven't gotten a similar product for USB 3.0 ports yet but this page shows several:
With Notebooks now including eSATA ports on some models I'm starting to think about that for my one Desktop that could use such a drive.

I have used externals for a long time, and went to go get another Toshiba Canvio today. I particularly have appreciated the fact that I could choose to use their back-up software or treat the drive as any internal drive (ie put what files I want and when). I could swap between my win 7 desktop and win8.1 laptop without issues as well.

So, imagine my fun when I learn that their new variety Canvio Connect II has pre-loaded software for back up, cloud and security....ggggrrrrrr. Okay, so I need a drive desperately before my trip end of the month.

1. Does anyone know if I can reformat this drive in Windows and wipe all the pre-loaded stuff?

2. Does anyone know of any external hard drives that behave as an empty drive on the current market?

3. Added it would be sweet if there is a drive anyone knows of that answers #1 or 2 that also can swap with other os-x laptop.

Thanks for any info.

A:External Hard Drive without auto backup

Q1: I don't know "Toshiba Canvio" from a side of bacon, but I'd be astonished if any drive can't be formatted. What's "special" about it that might make it different?

Q2: Most any drive I know of can be treated as an "empty drive". What's special about Canvio that it can't?

There must be more to the story.

Unless there's something I don't understand, I'd wipe the drive and back up to it with the software of my choosing. What's standing in the way of doing that?

I have two Seagate GoFlex 2TB drives which I alternate and use for backup. They are connected using USB 3.0. I recently swapped the drives (one stays off site). The Windows AutoPlay box (Open Folders, Use for Backup, etcetera) pops up at a regular internal. I have disconnected and re-connected. I've uninstalled the device and re-installed. This hasn't happened in the past. Just suddenly started. The drive is fully functional.

Any ideas?

Windows goes into sleep/hibernate it does not stop an external USB-attached expansion drive when. When Windows does a shutdown it does stop the disk. Is this normal behavior for sleep mode, or do I have something set wrong? It's a Seagate 1TB drive and I'm using a Windows-supplied driver.

The answer is to disable USB when in sleep mode from BIOS. Most motherboard manufacturers have this option. Then your external HDD will power down.

Ok, here's a strange problem. Many times, but not every time, when I put the computer into Standby mode and then next day come out of sleep, one of my hard drives is not recognized. I have 2 HD's, "C" with just windows and software and "D" with all my important stuff. I get an error msg that the Delayed Write Failed for "D" and when I look in windows explorer, the entire drive is missing. So I do a re-start of the system, and then it is all back to normal.

When I put the computer into sleep mode, I don't leave any open applications or unsaved documents.

To make this more confusing, the problem began only after replacing my video card and having some problems with sleep mode right after that. So, how do I know what is going on? Hard Drive failure, sleep mode problem, or video card???

A:Hard Drive or Sleep Mode Problem?

hmmmmmm..... nobody has heard of this? I really need to figure out what to do and I'm hoping someone can help. Sometimes my computer doesn't do this, but lately it is happening more. It even happened today - instead of putting it into sleep mode when i went to work I just shut it down (using the normal windows shutdown). When I turned it on the computer on one level seemed to recognize the hard drive because the chkdsk function came on during boot and it had to check the drive for "consistency" - then it said there was not enough space to store the lost data file (I have 25gb free!) and when windows started, the hard drive was no where to be found! So I went and re-booted again and it all came up fine.

The drive is working right now. But I am very concerned about it possibly failing. I am right now making a backup of all my important stuff onto another drive (external). I dont know what could cause this. where do I even begin????

If you put your machine to sleep, then all programs are suspended, so there is absolutely no point in leaving them "running". Most especially not if this causes errors on waking.

Unsure as to whether to post this here or in the hardware section, but since this might be a software problem I figured I'd try here first.

I have a Dell l702x which has an SSD for the OS and some programs and a normal HDD for generic storage needs.
A few months ago a strange and annoying problem started occurring, in that whenever I put the laptop into sleep mode, either by closing the lid or by choosing it from the start menu, 9 times out of 10 it will begin going into sleep mode, the screen will go black/turn off etc. but the mechanical storage HDD will not spin down and turn off, locking the laptop into this neither on nor off limbo state. When this happens the only things I can do are: hold the power button to force shut down, remove the battery, or let the battery run dry. The next time I power the laptop on I'll be greeted with the "you didn't turn your computer off properly" screen.

I figured this was a problem with the HDD itself, as it was a few years old and was giving me other warning signs that it was on the way out (such as labored clicking and grinding noises when made to do extensive data transfers). So, I saved a bit of money, bought a new HDD (even a different manufacturer to the original, a Western Digital instead of seagate) copied my data to it, installed it, only to discover that the problem STILL exists, sleep mode is still unusable to me.

I can imagine that reinstalling windows will probably solve my issue, however since it&... Read more

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and have kept up with all Updates and latest drivers. I am having a problem with a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus External Hard Drive connected to the USB port of my Asus Sabertooth motherboard. After waking up the system after sleep, the external drive vanishes from the PC. Web searching has shown me a fix in 2009 that was supposed to be incorporated into Windows 7. It either was never done, or it was not pertinent to my situation, since it made no reference to USB connection. The problem described then was that due to the large size of this drive, it did not respond soon enough to the awakening process, and thus was never seen.

Is there a more current fix for this, especially with USB connection?

A:Problem recognizing external hard drive after sleep awakening

Hello and welcome sherwin Mate does the problem still exist if the drive is plugged into a different usb slot.

Also does this still happen with other devices other than a drive? To check just reduce the sleep time down to speed up the process of checking.

Plus mate good on you for using some specs but they need to be a little more specific ie chipset on th e motherboard or the mobo version / model.

Use Speccy to find this out Speccy - System Information - Free Download

When I leave my computer after a session, it automatically goes into sleep mode after a period of time and remains that way till I wake it up.

However when I manually put it to sleep ( via shutdown options) , it goes to sleep immediately but for only a while ( a few minutes) then it shows the desktop screen again. If I then leave it alone after it self awake , it goes back to sleep as described above.

Any idea why ?

A:Auto sleep mode works but manual sleep does not

Some softwares can stop the sleep request to work properly.

run cmd.exe as a admin (Click on start, type CMD, right click on CMD.exe and select run as admin)
then type the command
powercfg.exe /energy
This will generate a report that will show if any software is blocking the sleep request. Your next step would be to configure the software in control panel power options

I have a Seagate Free Agent External Hard Drive 500G, I have had it for almost a month now, if not more, backing up videos and other various data. But I just realized today that my computer has not been properly going into hibernate. I use to walk away for 1 hour+ and it would automatically go into hibernate but now it does not and I believe it is because of the external hard drive.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I could get my computer to successfully go into hibernate with this usb external hard drive connected? And while I am posting I wanted to bring up the issue of my computer not shutting off on occasion (This is before I had the external hard drive). Most the time I tell the computer to shut off and it does so fine but on occasion the screen shuts off but the OS keeps going and the comp does not shutoff so I must do it manually or reset and hit shut down again.

The External hard drive does not support x64 I found out today but it supports vista x32 so it will not allow me to up date the device, if that would even help. When I bought it reviews by users said they were using x64 with it so I thought it would work fine and it has so far except the updating and hibernate mode.

Thanks in advance,

My motherboard is ASRock m3a770de. I built my machine 3 days ago. I have one Hiatchi 500gb internal HD, and one 1TB external HD.

I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition.

After building my computer three days ago, I installed windows, and my external was not being detected through eSATA in the BIOS or in Windows "Probably need to install drivers" I said.

So I put in the CD that came with my motherboard, and installed the AMD All in One Driver that was on it. Restarted, and hey, my external was showing up.

Today, after installing SP1 (not sure if thats what did it), my ext hd was no longer showing up again. I reinstalled the driver on that CD. Now, I'm not sure if it even installed the first time, because it said it was currently uninstalled through the ATI catalyst installation program. But it didn't work this time. I'm not sure what got it to work the first time. But my eSATA drive was being read in IDE mode for three days. When trying to get it work the first time, I did plug it in via USB to see if it would work, maybe that had something to do with it working the first time?

Anyway, I changed my registry to start up in AHCI mode, and then went into my bios and changed my storage config to AHCI. Upon booting, windows would not load with my external HD turned on (anybody know why?), but loaded once I turned it off. Windows then installed AHCI drivers, and upon restarting, both hard drive, external and internal, were being detected as removal ... Read more

My external Seagate drive is apparently "dirty" and windows automatically checks it every time i boot up with it attached to the usb port. It is actually pretty annoying. The only way around it that I found is actually unplugging it before I boot up and plugging it back in after windows starts.

Every time the check says there are no issues. The drive works fine and I am able to use the drive as if nothing is wrong.

Does anyone know whow to get rid of the check during Windows startup? How can I make my drive "clean" again? Thanks

EDIT: I have Windows XP sp3 btw

A:External hard drive is "dirty" and windows runs a check every time computer boots up

You may need to run a manual chkdsk /f to clear it. Try this
> Unplug the drive then boot up then plug it back in. Determine its drive letter
> Start->Run, enter cmd to open a command prompt
> Enter chkdsk x: /f (except use the correct drive letter, not x)

/f option may take loong time complete (especially if large hard drive.. i.e hours) but when it's done i believe it should clear the dirty bit for you

A while ago I had a problem with a Computer running Windows 8 Pro x64 where it would wake up very early in the morning or various times at night. It wasn't nice since the computer is in my bedroom. Eventually, a Microsoft Support person disabled the Wake Timers but that didn't help. Finally, for no reason at all--maybe it was a Windows Update (don't know) but it stopped doing it.

Recently, the computer has started to wake up on its own while in Sleep Mode, and then shut down in Hibernation Mode approximately one minute later after it has been in Sleep Mode for a while, apparently more than an hour or so. During the time the computer turns itself on, nothing is displayed on the monitor screen.

I have attached two screenshots of the last recorded issue, one showing the General tab info and the other showing the Details tab info, for your reference.

What is causing this problem?

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

My mic doesn't work after I wake my computer from sleep mode. To get it to work, I have to unplug my mic, shut down all my applications that use a mic, plug my mic in, then restart the applications. It works, but it's a bit of a nuisance to do that every day.

Is there a way to fix this issue?

A:External mic not working after sleep mode.

Generally (in many cases) that is related to a driver. Update the sound driver and see if that helps. If you have integrated (on the motherboard) sound, use the driver from the motherboard vendor (I assume you have installed a non-Gateway motherboard from your specs). Sound drivers can be tricky and many times non-vendor sound drivers either do not work or do not work correctly.

Ok this isn't really a major issue, but if there's a way around it then I'd be interested.

At the moment I'm not really using an external HD for any purpose, but still have it plugged in, with the software set to put it into sleep mode after 3 minutes if it's not being used. It's actually noisier than my PC so it's something I would rather not have humming away if possible.

I have noticed that when I shut down when the HD is not in sleep mode, it shuts down pretty much instantaneously. With the HD in sleep mode, we're talking about a minute.

What could be the cause of this? The PC is trying to shut down, and can't see the HD because it's having a nap? Would be nice to know.

I routinely use a second monitor but these last few weeks either the laptop doesn't recognize the 2nd monitor or else it does breifly and then the monitor blanks and goes into low power/power saving mode.  Same issue with two different monitors.  There is no problem with the laptop's built-in display. After researching, I suspect it is a by-product of the recent Windows 10 update.  Mixed advice on solutions.  I tried updating all my drivers from Windows Device Manager.Several posts recommended going to manufacturer (intel) and downloading drivers. Its automatic utility did not detect a current driver, but under older versions there was one from about a year ago. (I didn't try to install.)I've changed power settings so have monitor "always on". I have Lenovo U330p laptop with Win8.1 and an external monitor (HP ZR2330w). The monitor is connected with DVI(monitor end) <-> HDMI (laptop end) cable.

The setup has been running fine since Jan 2014, but this week I moved my desk to another room. (disconnected and powered off the monitor and connected back again in the other room) Nothing special IMO.

After I physically moved the system, Windows has been able to detect and use the external monitor only occassionally.

More insight to the problem:
Occassionally means, Windows detects and uses the external monitor only when I uninstall the display adapter (Intel HD Graphics family) and monitor (Generic PnP Monitor). Then Windows automatically re-installs the drivers, and that makes the setup work UNTIL next time the monitors go to sleep. After that, the external screen is gone from Windows Device Manager and from both Windows Screen resolution pane, and Intel Graphic properties pane.

My notes
1. The screen is physically fine. It starts everytime normally and looks for signal. It goes to sleep when no signal is detected.
2. The cable is fine, because the screen notices when I plug on/off the cable. Also, the setup works after software changes (as described above) without touching/changing the cable physically.
3. I have installed latest drivers for the HP monitor and for the Display adapter (Intel).
4. The problem is not random. It happens every time systematically. (Win8 systematicall... Read more

its a Seagate 250gb hard drive. Thanks in advance

Is it usb powered? If so does the hard drive spin up? Are there any clicking noises from the drive?

I want to get an external hard drive/dvd burner combo if there is such a thing. To make this question as simple as possible...I need a hard drive that my camera can be plugged into with the firewire. I also need the hard drive that is able to plug in to the USB2 slot on my computer, because
my new Dell doesn't seem to tolerate a firewire card which I installed and then took out and returned to the store. It froze my computer and I tried everything to stabilize it but had no luck. It did work long enough to download 10 min. or so of video and I burned that onto a cd. Thats when I found out I had a dvd-rom not a dvd burner......long story I know. Sorry. I just want to figure out the most economical way now to save my movies and burn them to dvd also using either another external dvd burner or maybe there is a hard drive/dvd burner combo?? Or should I just get two separate externals?
Again: I need the hard drive/burner to plug into my computer with usb2.
Then the firewire from the camera would go into the hard drive/burner to download the movies.

I have a Compaq/HP Presario F700
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processorTK-57
- NVIDIA GeForce 7000M
- 2 GB RAM

Just recently my computer refused to wake up from sleep mode. When I closed the lid normally when i open it back up the power button flashes, then when i touch the mouse it wakes back up. The first time i noticed a problem the computer just took longer to wake up. I sat there for a minute moving the cursor and pressing on buttons before it woke up. The next time it went to sleep it didn't wake at all. The power button keeps flashing but the touch pad seems to be disconnected or just off.

I do have a wireless mouse. I have tried unplugging it before i put the comp to sleep without sucess. I have tried updating my video card driver and the driver for the touch pad. When i do a windows update it tells me there is an update for the touchpad but there is an error when i try to install it.

So far I have had to change my settings so that my computer never sleeps. This seems like a solution that will eventually burn my computer out.

If anyone has any tips i'd appreciate them.
Let me know if you need any more information.

After my computer sits idle for about five minutes, the hard drive light starts flickering. The drive will continue to run for minutes at a time, being off for only short intervals.
I suspect a virus, but I have the latest updates of Norton Antivirus 2002 installed, and no virus is detected. I have closed all programs unnecessarily running in the background.
I use Windows ME, have a cable modem, and use ZoneAlarm.
There appears to be some process running in the background. How can I identify and remove it?

Thank-you for the assistance!

I connect the hdmi and disconnect on the Dock and sometimes it works sometimes not. When I connect the hdmi on my laptop i have always an image on my dell screen.
I have also a very annoying other probleem. When I put my laptop on sleep then most of the cases do not work this and when i turn my laptop back on actually it restarts. This is very very disturbing issue.

I see it can be done from an installed to an external, but can it be done in reverse, taking the external cased hard drive and cloning it to an internal? The old hard drive is from an xp laptop, and I can aquire another xp laptop if I can clone this way. Perhaps if I set the enclosure hard drive as master? All ideas are greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Hey guys!

My Zune 80gb stopped working a while back. It wouldn't charge. So I thought I would take out the hard drive and use it as an external 80gb hard drive. So I bought an 1.8" ZIF encolsure for it and installed the hard drive into it.

All appears good with the installation. When I plug the hard drive into the PC the light on the hard drive enclosure comes on and stays on & the disk starts spinning. Then Windows Vista does the whole "Install new Hardware" thing and calls it a "Disk Drive" and a "USB Mass Storage Device" and says hardware is installed and ready for use.

But the problem is I can't seem to access the drive. I can't find it anywhere. It doesn't show up as a drive I can use or anything. I tried a third party partitioning prgram to try and find the disk so I could reformat it but it wouldn't it couldn't find it either. I even plugged the drive into my Mac thinking that Disk Utility might be able to recognize it and let me wipe it, but the Mac doesn't recognize it as anything.

Back in Vista, Using Device Manager, Vista notices the drive under the "Disk Drives" option as a "Disk Drive" and that it is elecronically signed by Microsoft (since it has the Zune firmware on it) but I can't do anything with it ... And this is the only place where I can see that the drive even exists. I can't reformat it or anything.

Can anyone help me? I thought I read somewhere... Read more

Since two weeks something strange is happening. My hard drives go into sleep mode and instantly come out of it. They won't stay in sleep mode. No matter what delay time I setup, they will behave like this. So even if I setup a time to sleep of 1 minute, you will hear them go to sleep and instantly come out of it every minute, continuously. This used to work perfectly before for months. I haven't installed anything new (except of Windows updates). I've checked with performance monitor if anything is accessing the drives but there's no drive activity whatsoever. I've also tried to shut down as many processes as possible but that didn't help either. The only thing I've changed three weeks ago was my video card (Radeon 6850 to GTX580) but I'm not sure that the issue started then. Just around two weeks ago I noticed the issue. Did anybody else experience something like this?

I've solved my problem. The solution, for people with the exact same problem, was to downgrade my Intel RST driver from 11.7 to 11.2.

I am running Vista Ultimate with 2 gigs of RAM and an Athlon 64 processor. It is working well except for one problem. My hard drive runs constantly. I have read that this is normal and that Vista is using a search system to organize files. I turned it off in services. I've also turned off Windows Defender (I can run defrag when I want!)

I don't know if this happened as a result of a Windows Update but I am not happy that the drive runs all the time. I ran Malawarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, and a AVG scan. Nothing was found

Does anyone have any idea what else I might try to see if I can get the hard drive to rest. I know when there is activity that it will run but in the past it always settled down and stopped running.

I see others have had this problem. Thanks for any and all ideas.

Just wondering about any tips on settling down the hard drive always running. You can hear it going almost 90% of it's on time. Cleaning inside? or any other suggestions. Thanks.

A:Hard drive runs all the time

Do you have an anti-virus program or anything that runs in the background at system idle? It sounds like you have something running at idle, or possibly some kind of virus or spyware running. I'd recommend doing a virus and spyware scan if you haven't already.

Hi, My hard drive seems to be processing alot when we're not doing anything on the system. I have AVG & it runs an automatic scan at a specific time of day. The hard drive is churning alot outside of that scan time. Would someone mind looking through my hijackthis.log & let me know if you see anything unusual that I might be able to fix.

Thanks, Steve
