System locks PC / Shuts down suddenly

Q: System locks PC / Shuts down suddenly

My PC locks up / shuts down without any notice. It also takes a long time to start up. I believe the slow start up is because I have too much stuff opening up that is not really needed. I notice the lock up problem happens more often when I use Firefox (V3.0.5) then when I am using IE (V6). I tried updating to IE7 but had so many issues with it that I had to go back to IE6. IE was locking up and not loading pages. The log and zip file are attached.

Preferred Solution: System locks PC / Shuts down suddenly

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Ok got a problem that I think I knwo what is wrong, but I'm not sure. Looking for some confirmation on what I think. Or suggestions on what else if you disagree with my diagnosis.

Computer in question:
1 Ghz Duron
256 of some ddr ram
TNT 2 32 meg vid card

I get a call from this lady and she says her computer locks up while on the internet and then the screen goes blank. When she turns it off and back on nothing happens. If she tries it later it will turn on but when she's on the internet it happens again.
So thats the diagnosis she gave me.

Today after work I stopped by her house and used the computer for a bit. She is running WinXP Pro SP1. I checked her antivirus, it needed updating but the defs weren't real old. I then looked in the event viewer, it was clean, no warnings or anything, only the information messages.

So right now I'm thinking wtf? everything seems ok to me that would cause black screens. So I decide to fire up adaware (because I'm about to head out and thinking I might as well clean up the crap she's gotten from using IE while I'm here).

So while AdAware is dling its thing I decide to go to Windowsupdate.com and get some crap dling before I leave (she's on dialup). As those pages are loading up I decide to check her monitor connection just incase thats loose. As I reach back behind I touched her usb cable going to her printer.

*This is the most relavent part of solving... Read more

A:Video locks (with artifacts)/Monitor shuts off/System still running. Whats wrong?

One place to look for a shorting against the chassis, would be that thin metal plate that surrounds all the PS2/sound/USB/parallel etc. ports on the pack of the PC. This has some very small 'lips' that fit around each individual port. They could easily make a false contact.

All right, I'm having a problem that has me stumped, and I can't think of a cheap way to troubleshoot... so here I am.

Now, as you can tell from the title of this thread, my computer powers off right after I turn it on. Sometimes it will boot up Windows just fine, only to have it turn off automatically after 10 minutes or so... but 9 outta 10 times, the system won't even stay on for more than a second.

Naturally, I thought it was a shoddy PSU... so I swapped it out with a PSU from my other machine... same problem. (?!)

Next, I tried unplugging each of my drives/HDs, one by one... maybe they were causing the prob somehow? Nope...

Now I was able to get into my BIOs briefly before my last crash. I checked my PC Health settings, and everything checks out. My fans are spinning properly and my CPU seems to be staying at a cool 30 degrees C. Now I have had a fan make some noise once in a while, but not enough to get me worried. (No, I don't know which fan) When I power on, all fans spin nicely... then the system just shuts off... usually before POST. BAH!

On the rare occasions it lets me into Windows, my logs show no problems... not even an "Unexpected Shutdown" error... Windows doesn't even try to check the disk for errors during boot... you know, like it normally does after an improper shutdown.

Ok, here's my specs:

Gigabyte MB with a AMD 64 3200+ CPU
1 gig o' RAM (2 matching Kingston 512s)
Seagate 120gig SATA HD... Read more

the problematic component is highly likely to be the motherboard. don't worry, because you wiseley built your own and avioded buying an oem build. consequently, you should to be able to choose from a wide selection of replacement boards at competitive proces. good luck.

Hi All,

I have DELL INSPIRON 15R series laptop with WINDOW 7.

i3 Proc

Problem: MY CPU meter unncessarily shoots upto 100 and system shuts down

1. Twice, When I was on video conference with 3 of my friends (Google Plus Hang Out - Google Chrome browser)

2. When I tried to Mix audio and Video in Windows Live Movie Maker

3. I use a Software called Fruity Loops for Music Programming. I had created a project 4 months ago with this software. It worked fine then. The CPU consumption to play my program live was Nominal.
I opened the same project a couple of weeks ago, and the project wouldnt even play.
It drags... CPU shoots up and system shuts down

I removed all the unncessary programs that I had installed on my machine. I still face the problem.

The problem first occured, when I used Adobe Audition to remove noise from a recording.

Could any one help me out of this??

I've got a custom machine running XP service pack 2 which has decided to start locking up randomly and without warning, i can be doing something and fwoom, everything stops responding and my music starts skipping if it is playing. Sometimes it freezes immediately at startup (not since i replaced my RAM) and sometimes it can function fine for upwards of 12 hours without freezing.
I upon one restart i got an error message saying that the system has recovered from a serious error which was most likely caused by faulty ram. I have since replaced my ram and i still encounter the same problem, althought less frequently. I am at a loss, specs are as follows.

EVGA nForce 730a GeForce 8200 mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition clocked at 3.3GhZ (i tried resetting the clock speed to the original 3GhZ to no avail)

Hi everyone. I tried to search the forums before i made this post, but cannot seem to find a post that helps me out. My PC is suddenly deciding to lock itself after being left alone for a while. It happens whether i just leave it sit with the monitor off, or even if i put the computer to sleep if i am going to be a way for a while. It never did this before. Please note the following:

There is NO screensaver
There is NO password
The computer is NOT on a network
The display is set to turn off NEVER.

I have set my PC for use with High Performance Audio, and do not want it to sleep, lock, or have a screen saver start up while in the process of ripping, burning CD's etc.

This just started two days ago. I have not downloaded or changed anything or any setting. I just came home, and had set my PC to sleep. When i got home, the monitor was on with the Login screen showing and saying it is locked. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

A:Computer suddenly locks itself, trying to get it to stop

By locked you mean it is now asking you for a password to login or the screen is just in the lock state?

....You may want to check the task scheduler to see if there is a task in there set to lock the machine after idle.

Hello, computer was running fine then one day it started freezing while playing World of Warcraft. Seems to happen in dungeons when there is a lot of graphical things going on. It also freezes when accessing some websites. Have to hard reboot every time. I had always been able to game with settings turned up so recently I changed them all down and still happening. Then started noticing the freezing on websites that had flash or some type of animated gifs running along the borders.

Kids had recently installed Steam and some mods for Minecraft which made me suspicious. I uninstalled them, updated drivers for sound and graphics, monitored my temperatures (all good) and even tried to restore to a previous restore point ... still freezing randomly. I ran malwarebytes and a virus scan with no hits. Opened the case, cleaned it, and checked to see if the cards had moved and needed to be reseated.

Weird that is just started happening.

I am very computer literate and consider myself advanced so would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks. (dont know if this is the correct thread for this issue, feel free to move it if needed)

One computer in our office, running Windows 98SE, suddenly began locking the computer up when you try to open Outlook 2000. Outlook Express runs fine, but calendar appointments and reminders are located in Outlook and we need these, so must be able to get into Outlook.

I have run scandisk and defragged. We have McAfee antivirus software running. I have also run RegClean to remove unwanted items from the registry. I did a repair/reinstall of the Office 2000 Pro programs, hoping that would help, but haven't found the fix.

I'm hoping that someone out ther is a whole lot smarter than I am and can provide some assistance. Please let me know.

I reloaded my PC 3 days ago just to clear up unnecessary files and what not. My PC is a year old. My problem began last night. My computer screen suddenly locks and nothing is clickable nor am I able to hover over it. The mouse pointer is the only movable thing on the screen. It seems to happen at random. I am at a lost of what to do. I am desperate to resolve this problem.

Alright I was playing through the walking dead game fine no problems then I had to go eat dinner so I paused the game (hit the esc key) and my monitor shut off and said no signal whenever I turned it back on. My mouse and keyboard also started shutting off and on and nothing I pressed (alt+F4, ctrl+alt+delete, etc) nothing got any response. So I shut off my computer booted it back up tried to play the same game again got the same issue. Then I tried to play something else and I got the same problem so whenever I launch any game my screen shuts off and computer essentially crashes. When Windows boots back up it says that it has recovered from a serious error similar to when you encounter a BSOD but doesn't ask you to send a report to MS.

Also whenever I come back from the error windows for some reason attempts and fails to re-install the wireless receiver for my 360 controller. However it works fine again once I unplug and plug it back in again.

So far here is what I've tried:
1. Uninstalling the game that started this.
2. Re-installing my video drivers.
3. Wiping my video drivers with driver cleaner in safe mode then re-installing my drivers.
4. Re-installing direct x using a setup file from a random steam game.
5. Doing a system restore from as far back as I had (April 25th)

A:Screen Shuts off and computer locks up whenever I Launch a Game

Run a virus scan and malware scan, and then do some hardware checks. If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

Download and install Malwarebytes, update it, do not start the free trial, and then run a full scan, and see the Good and Free system security combination. for better security steps and scanning tools. Make sure to update the security software before running the full scan.

Monitor temperatures during the following tests. Use the following programs to monitor the temperatures. Real Temp is a good CPU temperature monitor.
Speccy - System Information - Free Download will monitor all hardware temperatures.
HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools can be inaccurate for CPU temperatures, but is a good program for GPU temperature monitoring.
Use FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net to test the graphics card GPU. Let it run until the GPU temperatures even out or until the GPU temperatures reach a dangerous level (you can find the max temperature for your card on either the nVidia or AMD sites; if you are not sure, ask us). The goal is to get a steady temperature, find out if the GPU is overheating, or to see if there are any artifacts present in the test itself: look for strange pixelated patterns on the screen or colors that do not look like they belong. I have had this HP dv 2045dx with windows 7 premium home edition for a little less than a year now and since I've had I have not been able to hibernate.

I have gone through every tutorial about typing in the correct command to enable hibernation and after I did all of this hiberfil.sys exists and the registry says hibernation is enabled however I still recieve the same behavior. I belive I have tracked the problem to a registry key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Power

I've loooked at this key for win 2000 and some other places on the internet and they say there is supposed to be a heuristics value which is not there.

They also seem to have non-zero values for HiberCompressTime, HiberCopyBytes, HiberCopyTime, ...etc. All of which for me is zero.

I have checked and made sure none of my devices are keeping the computer running through Device Manager

I have disabled the ability for programs to keep my system running in the registry.

I have changed the power settings to what I thought might work then back to the default many times.

All of these fixes still result in the same behavior of my computer locking and turning off the monitor but not hibernating.

Hibernate is probably one of my fav things and I miss it terribly. could anyone offer any advice as to how to get it fixed.

included is the aforementioned key.

A:Hibernate Simply locks computer and shuts off Monitor

attempted this fix: PC doesn't hibernate; locks instead

I did not restart my computer after I changed which partition was active.

I am dual booting with ubuntu but the boot loader is in ubuntu not win 7. I am afraid to restart with the system partition marked as active just in case this stops me from booting through ubuntu.

Will this be a problem? should I change the system partion to active even though this does not change the hibernation behavior?

My PC shuts down all of a sudden all the time(Up to like 5 times now). There's no warning, and no blue screen. It just shuts down and then starts back up again instantly.

Also, i have gotten 2 Blue Screen errors, and 1 incident where the lsass.exe process terminated suddenly and started the "shutdown -s -t 60 -c"Dont remember the message"" command at the login screen. All within 2 hours.
And right now my computer just lost all sound, which means its probbably about to shut down again.

I restored my computer 2 days ago, and havent installed much since then. It was suggested that one of my 3 RAM sticks had gone bad. But when i opened my PC, i couldnt figure out how to take the RAM sticks out.

Why is it doing this?

Hi there everybody. Lately I've built up my own computer. I am kind of expert so there shouldn't be any nab problem like mounting something wrong or placing wrong cables in wrong places but I have this problem. My pc runs very smoothly and powerful but after a period of gaming (like 1 hour of gtaV) my pc suddenly shuts down. It gives me no warning at all. I checked the temps and they all seems to be normal when the power off happens, so I think it couldn't be an over heating problem. This happens only when I "make things hard" let's say. The first days that this happened the AI software told me there was low voltage but now that doesn't happen anymore. But that's strange assuming I have a KCAS 600w.

My specs:
Mother: ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0
cpu: AMD FX 8320E 3.2->5GHz 8 core
Ram: 4GbKingstone+8GbKingstone
PSU: KCAS 600w
Cooling: Freezer 7 Pro rev 2

Help please, that's my struggle since 7 months

A:PC suddenly shuts down

I kept it monitored until the shutdown and on the AI software I saw that there was low voltage on the 2v and the 12 one.
How is it possible? I have 600 w and it should be enough

My other computer suddenly shut down while i was playing a game. Then i smelled a burning odor. I tried turning on the computer again but it wouldnt turn on so i opened the case and felt the hardwares. The power supply and the harddrive were hot.

What happened to my computer? how do i fix this?

A:Computer suddenly shuts down...

have a look and see if you can see anything burnt on the motheboard.
powersupplies and HD are HOT - how hot - remember they do run very hot hence the fans.

when you turn on - do any fans spin up or lights come on - if not its likely to be the PSU.

you could try disconnecting the PSU from the MoBo and other devices and then switch on and see if fan in psu runs.

otherwise you probably need a meter to check if the psu is working.

whats the make/model of the PC and then maybe someone can advise more on parts etc.

A:My laptop suddenly shuts itself down

My first question to you is this: do you notice any intense heat coming from the underside of the computer? Try playing the game in your lap, and feeling for heat (don't get yourself burned though!).

Also, what type of laptop do you have? (brand and model #)

In the past Sony Laptops were very known for overheating.

I would make sure your drivers are up to date and try a system restore if you have a restore point. Also, you might be able to find our more about whats causing it by looking at the event manager for dump files. Otherwise if its not a big hastle for ya i would consider a reinstall.

I was recently having issues with the LCD backlight on my Dell XPS M1530 laptop. So I took it to the tech guy who fixed the backlight issue. But, now I get sudden shut downs while I'm working on my laptop. The screen goes white for a second before it shuts off by itself. Could it be an issue with wiring inside which the tech guy messed up? Or maybe the heat? because I notice the shut down when mostly my laptop is resting on a wooden table for about half and hour. I've been struggling with this for months and am at my wit's end. Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated!

Basically, without warning, my computer, for no apparent reason, shuts itself off. No shut down. It simply shuts off, as though the power had been disconnected. (It might be worth noting that on starting it back up again, chkdsk doesn't run.)

At first, I thought it was a random occurence and likely a hardware problem; possibly the Power Supply. However, my MoBo is set to power up the computer after losing power and, after one of these unexpected power downs, the computer doesn't start back up until I hit the power button.

I've also started to notice a link to downloading. Namely, if there's multiple downloads going on, it seems to trigger the problem. It shuts down almost every night, which is when I've got utorrent scheduled to run, and I've been able to trigger the problem reliably by initiating multiple downloads of podcasts in iTunes. It also seems to happen sometimes when web pages are taking too long to load.

It's probably important to note that the computer functions perfectly otherwise. I can tax the system with the latest games or a heavy set of video transcodes without incident, so I'd have a hard time believing it would be a heat problem.

Based on suggestions from others, I have tried replacing the RAM and Network Card, but neither has had any impact on the problem.

A:PC Shuts down suddenly without warning

I'm not an expert by any means, but I guess there's no harm in having a bit of (possibly helpful) input...

It could have something to do with a faulty hard drive...I had something not so long ago where I had a lot of damaged secotrs, and copying things between disks would restart my computer (and sometimes never let it start back up)...

Have you got a spare drive you could test? Or if you have multiple drives, set the other 'good' one to the default download location and try to induce the problem.

I dont know what anyone else thinks of this...it could be completely wrong, but I guess there's no harm in trying!

My computer is having issues and I can't figure out what is wrong with it. Lately it's had this problem with just suddenly shutting off, especially when I'm playing a game. It will do it maybe once every day or every other day.

I turned off the hyper-threading function on the P4 and that stopped it for a couple of weeks but now its started up again.

Once it just suddenly restarted itself, but 99% of the time it will just shut off.

Every time it shuts off, I have to unplug it, wait for a couple of seconds then plug it back in. A couple of seconds after I plug it back in it will power up again on its own.

I'm not sure if it's the ram, power supply, software or what. What could be the most likely culprit?

Thanks and let me know if you need more details.

While I am using my laptop suddenly computer shuts down. It shows a blue screen with some details of the error. But before I could read it, computer restarts. After restart, sometimes it may function normally and sometimes it would keep shutting down. I have to turnoff the computer completely for few minutes and then it would start working normally. This can happen at any time, there is nothing specific about this behavior.
This is happenening for 2-3 months now. Then it struck to my mind to check the log files of the system. So I checked system log files in computer management. It showed "iaStor" error there.

Whats this "iaStor" error ? Is that the problem for this kind of behavior ?

Secondly, the pointer on the laptop freezes for few seconds quite often and then its released from the frozen state. When I am trying to click on a link or trying to scroll down, the pointer or grabber sign freezes and then it gets released after 4-5 seconds. Whats this behavior due to ?

I did uninstall and reinstall the windows xp, but still it gives same behavior for both the issues.

Hey Techspot, I'm hoping you can help me out with a little problem I've started experiencing. I got a Lenovo G555 just last year, and everything's been going great with it so far. However, as of about a day ago it decides to start shutting down without any warning whatsoever. It seems that this happens at random also. Some times I can keep the laptop on overnight (I like to have videos playing while I sleep) with no problems, and other times it snaps off after not even 5 minutes. Thus I can't really finish a scan with avast! or malwarebites. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary either. I don't know if it's really overheating because I keep it in a similar environment as my Toshiba laptop that has remained on around the same amount of time with no overheating whatsoever. I'm running Windows 7 on my Lenovo.

EDIT: I thought that my problem was in fact overheating, so I cleaned the fan area with some compressed air. That seems to help a little bit, but my computer still has a tendency to shut down randomly, just a lot less frequently. I checked the temperature with SpeedFan, and upon startup my core temp is as high as 80C, then cools off to about 60C when I'm doing nothing. The thing that worries me is that SpeedFan can detect no RPMs from my fan. Fan1, Fan2, and Fan3 all show 0 RPMs in the program.

Hi Everyone,

Computers never cease to amaze me. Just when I think that the computer is running "the way it should be", the damn thing restarts on me. It happened a few days ago while playing Madden 2003. It happened this morning, while printing a picture, I decided to close Paint Shop Pro. For some reason, I am leaning towards this being a video card problem. More specifically, I think there is a conflict between the video card driver and several programs on the computer (i.e. graphic intensive). It has always been my understanding that a computer is SUPPOSED to remain ON until you tell it to TURN OFF. I hope someone on this amazing board can HELP ME OUT!!

Thanks In Advance,

A:Computer Shuts Off Suddenly

I'm assuming that you've confirmed that your CPU fan is working properly? (in case it's overheating)

Check out this site....if you don't have this driver, then try downloading and installing it:

I know that the specific error they mention doesn't really apply to you, but it might help your problem.

You could also disable your computer from automatically restarting with system errors. Right-click on My Computer, go to Properties, then Advanced, then Settings (under Startup and Recovery), then take the checkmark off "Automatically Reboot". This is probably what's causing it to reboot....while you're working on something that deals with graphics, and the system generates an error, it automatically reboots.

These are just a couple of suggestions.

I will appreciate if you can help me solve this problem.
I noticed that whenever I type the word antivirus, mcafee, antispyware in Internet Explorer or Mozilla Google search, it closes the windows automatically.
The McAfee antivirus is not responding, it is not even let me uninstall it.
I got to ran the HJTInstall.exe and I am attaching the logs, so with your expertise you can give me more light on how to troubleshoot this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings-- my previous problem was wonderfully solved here, so am hoping help with new problem will be successful.

This past week I've suddenly developed a problem where without any warning the computer will shut off. The 'power' button on the PCU will go to an amber, and will not respond to repeated pressings. The only way I'm able to get it back on again is to cut the machine off at the power strip, then press the power button. I've run some various system scans, and nothing turns up.

I am using Windows XP, have a Gateway computer, and have NO CLUE about what is going on. Many thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. Please let me know what more information I need to provide for consideration.

Hi there!

Before I can help you in any way, I would like you to give information on your computer, such as service packs are installed or not, do you get any error messages, have you been experiencing speed problems with the pc lately, or have you been fiddling with the registry( ). Thank you!
Looking forward to helping you!

Hi guys,

I'm just a newbie and don't know how to mess inside my PC.

I just want to ask what problem my PC might have. My PC is old, but it is the only one I have. Lately, after some time of using my PC, the graphics went crazy with big pixels and the resolution was messed up. When I tried to print, the output has gone crazy as well. Then all of a sudden my PC shut off. When I tried to restart, it shut off again immediately.Today, as I tried to start again, everything seemed to be fine, but again after hours of using the PC shut off again. I worried that I might be hurting my PC since the problem still persists.

Fans are working.

Pentium 4 (2.8 Ghz)

Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

I really need my PC for my upcoming school finals and projects. I'm desperate, please help.

My Spectre x2 keeps turning off automatically without warning, even when I'm just watching YouTube videos or using Facebook. There's nothing to signal that it's going to happen, it just goes to a black screen.

Lately, my computer has been shutting itself off suddenly, followed by a loud high-pitched constant tone, which lasts until I turn the power off on the power supply. When I turn the computer back on, I get a blue screen that says there was an error and the system has been shut down. If I leave it off for about 10 minutes and turn it back on, it will come on fine, but eventually shut off again. A friend of mine mentioned that this may be a motherboard issue, so I'm just wondering what everyone here thinks.
