Bigger HDD equals slower computer ??

Q: Bigger HDD equals slower computer ??

Dear All, out of curiosity, i have a 80 GB HDD now and i am planning to get a 120 GB HDD soon. Does this inclusion of new bigger capacity HDD into my system translates into slower processing or boot up time ??

i am running a P4 2Ghz with 512 DDR Ram for your info. Thx !!

Preferred Solution: Bigger HDD equals slower computer ??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Bigger HDD equals slower computer ??

No, it won't slow down the sytem. The only things that may take longer will be various scans like virus scans and defrags - and that'll be more to due to an increased amount of data on the drive.

I was wondering what is the better choice? Should i stick with two 512's but get them with lower timing, or get 2 1GB sticks and of course they would be slower... Or should i try to find a middle ground between the two...?

So,

Recently I've changed my Mobo, CPU and RAM. Installed Windows 8 Pro Retail and upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. Worked perfectly and no problems

But I've noticed that if I need to restart the system I will get the usual Blue screen saying "Restarting", this will then goto a Black screen.

Nothing happens after the black screen, I never see my BIOS image or any text whatsoever (Which I usually see on a normal boot). IF I then press and hold the power button to force shutdown the computer and then press it again it will perform a normal boot, I see the BIOS Image etc.

Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to the Forums!

As you are at such an early stage in the set up and have hopefully not loaded too many programs or data files you are in an excellent position to do a clean install of W10. You can get the latest W10 iso from the Microsoft Tech Bench ; make sure you download the correct version to match your existing set up (Home or PRO, 64bit or 32bit, language will probably be English international if you are a UK keyboard). A clean install will be so much better for you and should help to eliminate a lot of problems some people have been having with the upgrade route. You may need to get the latest drivers from the manufacturers for your system but wait first to see if MS finds them automatically. Device Manager will show if there are any that you need.

As you have already had W10 activated on this new setup when you install you simply skip activation at the beginning and W10 will automatically activate once the installation is complete.

I don't think with my computer specs it should be doing htis (especially since it was doing well before). Now trust me I'm no "n00b" or anyhting, but this has me stumped... I've run Panda Anti-Virus 2 times and picked up a total of 4 items... ran Ad-Aware, and SpyBot and fixed some things and I'm still have problems

Hi,My laptop has been steadily getting slower and slower, freezing if more than a couple of windows are open and it crashed today leaving me with a black screen and a mouse. When I rebooted it it needed to be restored to an earlier point because of damaged files.I had tried removing progams, pics and old files. Also, my computer says that I am using CA anti-virus which I have not used in over a year and a half. SuperAnti Spyware also says I am running CA Antivirus and Firewall (as activated). It has been uninstalled from my computer and does not show in my list of progams which can be uninstalled (under Windows Control Panel).Next, when I was running a symantec check (I am a student and use the corporate edition) I saw two files that I can not find when I search my hardrive, but the anti-virus didn't recognize it as a virus. They both had unusual names, appeared to be directly on my C:// drive and one ended in a .pif extension. (Of course it flew by my screen so quick that I would never had seen it if I hadn't been looking at that program at that moment and I am unsure if the other even had an extension.)Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give me. I have a small web business and of course I use the laptop far more than my desktop. I have backed all the pertinent files up...but still...Finally, does anyone have a registery cleaner/repairer they recommend, if any at all? Thanks in advance!!-Learning in VirginiaI followed the instructions in the Preparation Gu... I am not sure yet but i think sleep/hibernation is the culprit. I think Windows becomes slower and slower after several sleeps/hibernations. CPU gets more spikes and hard disk is frequently active and slow (when i do something simple, like opening folder, resuming music playing after long time, resuming YouTuben videos playing after long time and especially when MSE antivirus updates itself the hard drive slows down for 3 minutes until MSE is finished). But if i restart computer everything goes back to normal.

Here are my system specs:

Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83Ghz
1GB RAM
80GB Hitachi SATA 150
GeForce Go 2400
Windows XP Home 32-bit

Hi

For the last few weeks my computer (Windows XP) has been running slower and slower. It takes 2 minutes to boot up. Programs hang up for no reason. It can be fast at the beginning (well like it was before) but then it starts getting slower and slower.

Sometimes a blue screen shows up and the computer reboots by itself so it could be a hardware error Im guessing.

I have 1 GB of RAM, 2,22 GHz, Geforce 7600.

Help appreciated

I've had this computer for about a year and I've always had problems. I use to get blue screens when loading things that use a lot of memory. Now the computer will just freeze with blue screen and I have to reboot. It doesn't happen every time though.

For example, I'll be playing World of Warcraft which uses a lot of memory, I'll minimize and load iTunes. Sometimes it will freeze as it loads, sometimes it won't. Sometimes after it crashes and I reboot, I'll get a MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION blue screen as windows loads. If I restart again, windows will load properly.

I have the case standard 420w power supply. I used a power supply calculator and it was a bit over 420w but I don't know how accurate those are. Heres what's in my computer using power:

Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT
1,024 MB Ram (512x2)
Realtek AC'97 sound card
Floppy drive
Two optical drives (DVD-ROM and CD/DVD RW)
One hard drive
3-4 fans total
4 usb
case lights

This one should work well with your board.

If you want to kick it up a notch for future upgrades choose this one.

Do you only get the crashes when using newly added RAM?
Are you certain the new RAM matches the specifications of the RAM that was already in your computer, and/or that your motherboard supports mixed RAM types?

My computer has worked fine for years (~4 years old) until very recently (yesterday, it worked in the morning but started acting up in the afternoon)

I have been having issues and noticing it has been freezing a lot
Ive run countless malware/anti virus scans (malwarebytes and microsoft security essentials) but they find nothing
I defragged using defraggler
I periodically run Ccleaner to fix my registry and clear cache

thinking it was my HDD getting old I ran a check disk (checking both boxes: fix bad sectors and fix system errors)
It kept freezing on "CHKDSK verifying free space 5 of 5" at 63% each time
So I forced shutdown and rebooted and backed up my important files

While backing up I noticed my computer worked fine when navigating folders. also I have no issues with excel. But if I startup firefox or IE, when I try to use a search feature it freezes (not completely bc i can move the cursor but it in a never ending loading state, eventually forcing me to force shutdown and reboot.

I opened in safemode (with network off) and was able to open IE and Firefox and turn off all addons and extensions
I noticed "shockwave flash 11.4.402.265" was the only recently updated file (i have autoupdates on) so this too was then disabled
I then restarted

Everything now SEEMS to work great

No more freezing issues, and so far (about 10 minutes haha) i havent had an issue. but that is 9 more minutes then I had yesterday (it was one of those frustrating days that we h... Read more

Hello all,
Ive noticed my computer getting slower and slower doing normal things, like if I right click it will take about ten seconds to pop up. Opening ff, or chrome will take about 15-30 seconds while normally it takes under 5 seconds. I really stumped on this one normally doing simple things like defragging or ccleaner helps but now that does nothing. Really dont know what to do any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Computer getting slower and slower

Hello John

Here are some things to try

Keep your backups up-to date. It could be the start of a hard drive problem.

If it is not any better after these suggestions I think you should run the manufacturer`s diagnostics on the hard drive.

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

If you don't know the make of hard drive Hitachi Drive Fitness Test will work with any make.

The 3rd download is for a bootable CD

To Generously Helpful Techs:

I bought my "top of the line gaming computer" about 1 yr ago, it was lightning quick during browsing (always less than a second from the click of the mouse). It slowed down slightly over the months. HOWEVER, just recently, I had an almost fatal error through some sort of download (?) - I was able to use the Windows XP Syst Recovery DVD to "correct one or more errors" and save it (get it to actually start). Now it works, but very, very, VERY SLOW (at times, 10 to 15 seconds between Internet browsing transitions) - I'm not 100% certain, however, I believe its cause to be some sort of virus? If you can please offer any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

I hope that I am posting the right log ...the right way:

Hello Antonio Glishko,My name is Cody and I'll be helping you clean up your computer.I will reply as soon as possible (typically within 48 hours). In turn, I ask that you please respond within 72 hours. If you know you will be away longer than that, I just ask for notice ahead of time. Some points for you to keep in mind: Do NOT run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
It's simply easier for me to analyze logs in this format. Provide feedback about your experience as we go.
Every post you make, please describe in detail how the computer is behaving. "The same" is not detailed enough. If you have any questions at any point, feel free to ask.NOTE: When you post your reply, do not use the button but use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. I'm hoping someone can be of help here. My computer has been getting slower and slower. I've done sweeps with both spybot and Ad-aware but there seems to be one thing they can't remove no matter how often I try, or when. I've not found this anywhere else on my computer, it's called mywebsearch.

I can't seem to figure out the source of the slowdown. Aside, of course, from the fact my hdd is packed (time for an archiving, hehe ) and therefore easily fragmented and not so easily de-fragmented. I have a veritable arsenal against all things evil and coded, and update and run them regularly. Spyware Doctor, Spybot S&D, AdAware, CCleaner, CWSShredder, Blacklight, NOD32 Antivirus, etc. But despite my best efforts (by all means and measures my pc should be sterile with all the cleaning and immunizing I do) it still seems to be getting slower and slower. I'm out of ideas now, I place my pc in your hands. *Grinler collapses onto the floor and with his last bit of strength, thrusts out his arm toward the cloaked figures standing around him. Lately my computer is getting slower and slower. I try to clean it up often, I do regular backups and the heaviest software that I use is Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Firefox. Firefox is getting impossibly slow, I have deactivated all my plug-ins except for Zotero (citation manager) because I use it, but I think it is the culprit of firefox being sluggish. I am ready to switch to Chrome.

However, lately every time I open MyCompter icons take a while to load. Double clicking takes longer than normal and copying files from one place to another is long. iTunes takes a good two minutes to open and well, you get the picture.

Here is my HiJack this log:

Seems to be normal, I was told. But as this happens anyway, i want to slow down the process as hard as possible. F.ex. by using ccleaner and transferring the temp-folder to another partition, etc.

Yet there seem to be strange things happening. I just encoded a video to a non-C-location. during the encoding the C: partition gained a few hundred MB's. But as the encoding was finished, those few hundred mb's didnt delete themselves again, even after running ccleaner.

So, basically all i did was encoding a file which is not on C: into another file, which also is not on C:. Yet C: gained finally a few hundres mb's.

Anyone know why that is?

A:C-Partition gets bigger and bigger

When you run C cleaner, by default it looks for certain areas... particularly when you are decoding / encoding videos it will create a temp file.

If the temp file is not inside the Windows Directory, the Cleaner won't find it unless you tell it to look there.

Also, if your encoder / decoder program is not told to delete the left behinds it will in fact keep the temp files there as well. There are a lot of scenarios.

Hello,

I hope that someone may help me, I've had this blue screen 3 times within the past 5 weeks, the last one was 10 days ago so I'm not sure what is triggering it.

When I first got my PC (2 months ago) I had issues with the graphics card and ended up sending it back which is now completely fixed and it works fine.

I've looked in the Action center to see if there was anything that I've downloaded that could have started these bluescreen's but can't see anything, so now I need a little help to figure out the problem.

Thankyou in advance to anyone who can help, i've attached the dmp files if you require the other two let me know please. Thanks.

Hi I bought this computer in march, since then I've been getting random BSOD sometimes they happen several times in a day or I could go for about a week without one, I tried once to install something to be able to open the dump files but at the end I couldn't do it, I just had another BSOD few minutes ago and I figured it was about time to seek real professional help (I don't think BSOD's are good for the computer)

Here are my PC's specs

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (it was already installed)
X64
Intel64 Family 6 Model 26 Stepping 5 GenuineIntel ~3068 Mhz
BIOS Version: American Megatrends Inc. V8.14, 11/2/2010
Total Physical Memory: 12,279 MB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450

I'm not sure if you need some other specs, thanks a lot for your time and help

ok, so a few weeks ago, my gateway basically died. i got nothing but a blue screen when i turned it on and it would shut itself down within 5 minutes, even when plugged in. I figured it was due to a virus, so i wiped the drive and reinstalled windows xp. everything seems to work ok, except for the fact that now neither my internal wireless nor my SD slot seem to work at all. Its like my laptop is rejecting them and it didnt start happening until i reinstalled XP.

What would cause this and how do I fix it?

I can play world of warcraft sometimes for up to three four hours with no problems, then out of nowhere game freezes, and my computer restarts, i have a fan blowing into the side of my computer, maybe my apartment is too hot but, what do you figure? I do keep it warm enought that i can lounge around in basically nuthing but, any suggestions? I just built this computer been having this problem since the begging but, it seemed to go away with the fan. Well it did anyways, if i bought a liquid cool system might thats osolve the issue?

A:Play game equals restart

You do not mention what cooler you have on the CPU.
One of the best is here from Zalman: http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/product/view.asp?idx=145&code=005009

but have a look at others as well
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_CPU_Coolers_1.html

Did you apply proper thermal paste when mounting the CPU?
Stock coolers for an AMD64 only use thermal pads, and are adequate (only)
However, if you use anything else (if you have bought a boxed CPU) you void your warranty, according to AMD.

Hi,
I recently received what looked like and offical warning from microsoft or something like that that my windows firewall has detected viruses/spyware and that I must install a new antispyware program from the following site. I did this and SpySheriff was installed. It the showed that my pc was riddled with worms, trojans etc. Spysheriff was not able to fix these unless I upgraded. My pc then showed popups every second saying my pc was infected. When online Norton antivirus would show that it was scanning outgoing mails which I did not send, half of which were rejected because the receiver address no longer exists. I looked for other options which lead me to a webpage that said that spysheriff was bad and needs to be unistalled.
I then ended up at bleepingcomputer and wanted to use the hijack facility. I first followed all the instructions.
I cleaned out all the temp/internet files.
Scanned with Spybot, Adware and Spyblaster (these removed a few spyware programs)
Installed and ran MacAffee advert stinger
Downloaded Sygate firewall.
After installation of Sygate I rebooted. Windows half loaded and is currently frozen with the light blue loading screen which says "Windows is starting up..."
Numerous reboots and it just stops there.
I have no recovery disk.
What can I do.

System:
2.4 Ghz Pentium 4
512 megs ram
Windows XP home edition
Norton antivirus 2005 recently virus updated

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hello Billy the Kid and welcome to BC.Seems you have quite the problem. Can you boot into Safe Mode? If you can, do a System Restore and hopefully the Sygate will be gone. The other option is to boot to Safe Mode and go to Start>Run and type in msconfig. Under the Startup tab remove the checkmark from the Sygate program so it doesn't load when you boot. How to start Windows in Safe Mode. If you can, download HijackThis to a floppy or CD and run it on the affected computer.HijackThis Installer Download LinkYou can then post a HiJack This log in our Forum. See Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Instructions for receiving help in cleaning your computer. Do as many of those steps as you can before submitting a log. If, for some reason you still can't boot, come into the chat channel and we may be able to help you there. See "Chat" at the top of this page. Our HiJack Team are all volunteers and are very busy right now. You should receive a reply in 2-3 days. Please wait until a team member posts to your thread. Hey all,

Its very rare that I have to post for help but this ones got me.

A colleagues asked me to sort her laptop out. Its a Dell Inspiron 15 AMD (1546)-4570.

Formatted, partitioned and installed W7 without a hitch, all drivers present and correct. Ran like a dream.

Now, as soon as I do an initial reboot after the completed installation, it BSODs with hardly any info except a STOP error.

Code:
stop: 0x0000007b (0x80D86B58,0xc0000034,0x00000000,0x0000000)
Ive tried everything that I know but have not been able to get it to boot past this.

Safe mode or any F8 option wont boot, Repair System from the HDD says it cannot repair, Repair System from DVD BSODs and I cannot boot into any form of alternative PE, XP, Vista or 7 as it BSODs.

Some of these options dont even BSOD, it just cuts the power out.

I can boot from DVD and completely reinstall but it does the same, first reboot is BSOD.

Also (maybe related) noticed that during the Dell system tests (F5) it always powers off half way through the memory/CPU checking and havnt yet been able to get past this.

Anyone shed any light on this?

A:W7 Installed 100% but first reboot equals BSOD.

Hi IAmTheDude,

Since you are experiencing issues even after 'Windows re-install', it points at a 'Hardware related' issue. You've also mentioned the system shutting down half way through the 'hardware diagnostics'. Dell on-board diagnostic tests are initiated with 'F12 key'; unsure about 'F5' that you've referred to.

You may want to refer to the following 'web article' for detailed information on 'Dell Diagnostics': http://dell.to/OUGnqT

If you are unable to run the complete diagnostics, you may also keep the system in 'BIOS environment' to see if it shuts down. To enter BIOS, repeatedly tap 'F2 key' at 'Dell splash screen'.

You may also share the system's 'Service Tag' and 'Account Holder's name' with me (only in a private message). Based on the 'current warranty status' of the computer, i may arrange for free repairs/part replacement if needed.

Do reply with the findings; would be glad to assist.

I'm having a problem with my PC (Win XP home SP1, AMD Athlon 3Ghz, 512mb RAM).

Frequently when I type the letter A or number 1 the PC will insert a = (equals sign) infront of the character. Sometimes the problem stops, but it always returns.

I have no idea how to make it stop, but it is incredibly annoying, especially as I type many documents at home.

Any help will be gratefully received...

A:Keyboard typing equals signs by itself

If you have access to another computer ar at least another keyboard try it and see if it does the same thing. If it does not then spend about $20 and buy yourself a new keyboard. If it does do the same thing it is probably a driver issue. You could do a repair install of Winxp and keep all of your data intact, if there is a driver issue it will replace the affected driver.
