laptop to home stereo receiver

Q: laptop to home stereo receiver

Does anyone know of a way to connect my laptop to my home receiver to play my downloaded music?

Preferred Solution: laptop to home stereo receiver

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Here is my situation. I have 5.1 surround sound speakers connected to my pc. I decided it would be nice to be able to run the ps3 through the surround sound for blu-rays and gaming without having to buy a whole new surround sound system. The setup that I have now sounds great for stuff on my pc. However, my pc didn't have an optical audio input so I got a usb device with optical audio in. Here is the problem that I'm having. I can get the sound to play through the speakers using vlc but there is quite a bit of latency. I've looked into using asio4all to try and eliminate the latency problem but I can't find a program that will let me use asio while directly playing the sound from my optical audio input. I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to either eliminate the latency in vlc or a program that I could use to directly play the input either without lag or using asio to try and eliminate it. Anyone have any ideas?

A:Using PC as a stereo receiver

Hmmm, I would probably look for an audio card with a digital optical input and bypass the USB conversion.

Win 7 hooked with HDMI to STR-DG1000 audio receiver. Windows detects equipment and installs microsoft "High definition audio device" driver. Go to configure speakers and only two channel stereo is available. Tried installing soundcard drivers and video card drivers, but HDMI port defaults to Microsoft driver. Does this mean my soundcard doesn't allow anything but stereo over HDMI?

I just purchased the program called Cool Edit Pro, and wish to record my old records onto CD with my CD Burner. I am using an older Onkyo Stereo Receiver, and professional turntable, Polk Audio Speakers. However, I cannot correctly hook up the receiver to be able to record and play from Cool Edit. I hooked up the receiver on the EPS Main Connector with RCA Phono Plugs, but the RCA Plugs don't really fit into the Sound Card Ports on the back of my Compaq Presario. I also tried connecting to one of the tape ports on the receiver, didn't work at all. When connected to the EPS, I can pick up the radio tuner, it plays fine. But, it seems nothing is being read by my computer. Do I have the wrong connectors? What ports should I use? HELP! 8^)

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. I connect my Ipod to my home stereo using a common miniplug to rca adapter, and it sounds great.

When I listen to music on my new laptop with my shiny expensive headphones - it sounds great.

But, when I plug my laptop into the same miniplug-rca I get a humming sound over my home stereo speakers.

I don' think there is anything wrong with my laptop, cause it makes great sound form it's little speakers; great sound from louzy ear bud headphones; and really great sound with my good headphones.

Any suggestions?

A:Connecting laptop to home stereo trouble

do you mean that:
there's humming sounds present
the sound output quality is bad?

for the humming sound, it could be because your output impedance between headphone and home stereo is not the same. especially if your home stereo has a big powerful amp.

in this case, try to update the sound card driver. however case related to electrical current is difficult to solve. hope some professional would come to take a peek at this thread

Laptop: Sager NP9150
Receiver: Sony STR-K850P
Audio: Realtek HD
Connection: SPD/F Optical Cabe
Listening mode: AFD Auto - runs everything as 2.1

Issue: when I know I'm utilizing a 5.1 source, the receiver only auto-detects 5.1 sound from DVD movies. Sources such as Netflix streaming and Steam games do not detect as 5.1.

I've run a few tests and for Netflix, I think the answer is as simple as selecting whatever Dolby flavor I think is applicable (Dolby ProLogic I or II, etc.) That seems to work fine.

For games, I'm less certain. I've read that games do not send 5.1 audio over SPD/F optical. The tests that I've run seem to indicate that in games, when I force a Dolby format with the receiver, it just sends the audio to all the speakers. In movies (DVD or netflix) I can (I think) tell that the individual speakers seem to be doing different things.

So, anyway - I apologize if this is all very confusing.

One thing I've hit on, is that I can use a hacked Realtek HD driver that allows me to force Dolby Digital Live. What is that? How does it work? Right now, it just seems to be muddying the waters.

This is driving me insane! I download (legally thru Napster) lots and lots of songs. I burn them onto CDs which play beautifully in my car stereo and my home stereo. I can even play them on my DVD player and my PlayStation. However, when I put them back into the CD ROM drive in which they were created they will not play. The light will continue to flash, indicating that the drive is attempting to read the disc but it never will. Blank CDs fire up without hesitation every time, as do audio CDs I have bought and software I have bought. The only discs I have a problem with are the ones I burn. I use Windows Media Player, Maxell discs... I've also tried Real Player and Roxio, I've also tried using other discs. Does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, ideas... Please help! Thanks

A:Burned CDs play in car/home stereo, not in CDROM drive

That is strange, it's usually the other way around.

What happens if you burn a audio CD with tracks ripped from regular commercial discs? Can you explore the disc from My computer?

What I'm getting at here is the only thing I can think of that would cause that is if there is some kind of protecttion on the disc. You can try this really quick, hold the shift key in when you insert the disc. Hold it in until the disc is ready then try to play it. That will prevent any files from auto executing on the disc which is one way they try and keep you from copying... never heard of it used to keep you from hearing it though.

I would like to use my laptop to mix down a 24 track recording. What would be the best way to monitor the laptop through my stereo system? I don't want to use the headphone out jack. Is usb a possibility? Would there be latency with usb? Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

A:Laptop To Stereo Help

You can get USB to RCA jacks you can still do it with headphone jacks also. This way is analog if you want to go digital you would need SPF or fiber optical tosh-link cable.

1/8 male to dual male RCA (Left white) + Right Red) for stereo. There are female to female connectors for stereo you can extend the cable length. Software like Virtual DJ Pro. Here's a link to the list of them from cnet. http://download.cnet.com/windows/audio-production-and-recording-software/?tag=mncol;pop

An article currently in the Tech/Help section of the Chicago Tribune talks about the ability to connect a laptop to a stereo and play Mp3s.

In it, he says:

"Meanwhile, let me suggest a work-around where you use your laptop computer in place of the MP3 player. Laptops, after all, do come with both USB 2.0 ports to accept external hard drives and with RCA pin audio out ports that can easily connect to the red and white audio inputs of a hi-fi system using conversion cords from the likes of Radio Shack."

Is the RCA audio out jack he's talking about my laptop's connection for headphones, or external speakers? If I run a cable from there to the stereo's AUX connection, won't I be running through the stereo's circuitry, as well as the laptop's?

A:Connect laptop to stereo

Buy the correct 3.5mm to RCA plug cable, connect the Line-Out, headphone, speaker jack to the inputs of the stereo. Play the MP3 with your favorite player.

Of course you'll be running through the stereo, I thought that was the object of the exercise.

Have tried all the suggesions to get the Stereo mix option on my Dell Inspiron N5010 64 bit new laptop to work. Updating driver, enabling disconnected devices in audio recording etc. These have all worked on many computers in the past. I undestand that Dell has some specific problems. I have been on a tech phone line with Dell for over 2:30 hours to no avail. According to a tech bulletin from Dell they admitted blocking Stereo Mix but said they have decided to "allow" the option. So how can I do it?

Can anyone help? THX

A:Dell Inspiron Laptop No Stereo Mix

Your best option would have been to post on the Dell users forum, Laptop hardware section. There are people on that forum that can specifically address this on Dell's. Home - Dell Community

First, in most cases the Dell IDT sound drivers need to be used. Non-Dell drivers will either not work or not work correctly. The lack of System Mixer is an issue on SOME Dell models (but it's not just a Dell issue, there are other Vendors with PC's that have the same issue).

I have no audio, but when I go to (right-click sound icon in tray) --> Playback Devices --> Playback tab --> right click "Speakers / Headphones Realtek High Definition Audio" --> Configure, then in Speaker Setup dialog:
* If I select Quadraphonic in the "Audio channels" list, I hear sound for the RL (rear-left) and RR (rear-right) speakers, with my stereo speakers plugged into the black jack in back. I cannot get sound when testing the regular L and R speakers in Quadraphonic mode; I've tried all 5 jacks.
* When I select Stereo, then clicking L or R speaker icon to test results in no sound, again no matter which of the 5 jacks i plug my stereo speakers into.
* So the only way I have sound is in Quadraphonic mode, but only for the back speakers. Therefore I cannot hear regular stereo output from applications, such as Youtube in Chrome.
This seems like a bug, or a highly unintuitive aspect of Realtek's or Dell's software at best. Any ideas on how to solve? (Beside buying full surround sound speakers)

Hi everyone,
I got an Averatec 3150H laptop, which I recently bought off ebay. I have a problem with the sound. The place where the headphones are supposed to go in (the female jack) is ruptured and thus I guess that it doesnt work because I dont get sound either on the laptop speakers or my headphones. It used to work fine before, but one night I guess I forced my headphones jack too hard into the plug and something inside is broken and hence no sound. I noticed there is also a microphone jack next to the headphone jack. Is there some way I could reconfigure my computer to permanently use the microphone jack as my headphone jack and my head phone jack as my microphone jack? simply put I want windows to swap headphone for microphone so that I can once again listen to music through the old microphone jack. I tried opening my lappy and see if there are any wires I could physically swap to make this possible but I guess everything is inside the circuit so I couldnt do that. My only other option of getting any sound from my lappy would be through a USB sound card but I dont wanna do that as it just adds to the accessory I have to tug around with my lappy. Does anyone have a solution for my problem?? please help!!!!!

hi quick question, when ripping songs from cds should you use stereo or joint stereo. i noticed that no matter which 1 u use, the file size remains the same.

i would like to know whick one gives u the best quality and such....i want my songs to sound the way they do on the cds without losing any information.

A:Solved: Stereo or Joint Stereo?

If you want a technical answer look here

and here

(it starts a bit flamey, but gets more interesting towards the end)

As for which to use, thats really a personal choice, many will say to go for true stereo, because that is more like the original. However, that isn't necessarily true. It is possible to recreate the original sound via joint stereo (all my music is stored in lossless format and uses JS), and JS performs better under compression than true stereo. Therefore, JS should out perform Stereo in any given amount of data, or, if the quality is the same, the JS compression will give more data to other parts of the track. (I hope that makes sense).

You need to bear in mind that there is only so much data to provide for the track, good compression concentrates the data where it is needed. JS allows more data to be used by more important or noticeable elements in the track.

Of course the best way to find out is to test it yourself and run ABX tests.

Foobar2000 is a good tool to do ABX tests. Try to use quality audio equipment

Doing these tests will show you what your ears find is the best system, which is what it really comes down to.

It is important that you use a good encoder and a bit-rate that will give you a quality that you are happy with. If you are encoding in MP3, th... Read more

Hi all techno's,

I had a lightning strike at home, damaged several appliances. I have a home LAN cat5 network in every room, all coming to a 24 port patch panel, connected to an ADSL router / hub. I had to replace the ADSL hub, as the LAN ports got damaged during the strike. Now have a brand new SMC 4-port hub / ADSL router in.

Funny problem : the house computer does work if I plug a long fly lead from the house computer to the hub, but not if I plug it into the wall socket which then is connected through the patch panel to the same hub.

So, conclusion: the LAN / patch panel got damaged as well.

Only problem is, if I plug my newish T500 Lenovo laptop into the same wall LAN socket that is not working with the home computer, the laptop does work. It seams the network connection for the Laptop on the LAN runs at 300MB/sec+, but the home computer, with a 1.5years+ old LAN adapter at 100MB/sec.

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE that the LAN works with the Laptop, but not with the home computer?????

About a month or two ago, I got a virus on my desktop.  My husbands IT friend dialed in and cleaned it out for me.  He recommended that I stop using Norton (because of the space it takes up and other reasons.....) and loaded AVG and told me to not use Internet Explorer and to use Firefox (which I have always hated)   He did a scan using Malwarebytes and found 160+ on my computer.  After he was done (5+ hours) I still seemed to have issues. (all programs would end up at "not responding" eventually, sometimes right after restarting the computer)
A friend of mine's husband is an IT guy, so I took my computer to him, he found some add on's that should be deleted in my Inbox, but that was all.  He messed around on firefox, played around for a couple hours with different programs, etc.  Nothing went to not responding.  I brought the computer home and after about 5 minutes on firefox... Not responding.  My inbox went to not responding... etc.  And this is still happening.
While my comuter was being fixed the 2nd time, I started using my lap top.  (which I hardly use at home at all)  I started having the same issues.  (Computer is Windows 7, laptop is Vista)  All programs started going to Not responding, taking long time to load, etc.

Which receiver would be better for a laptop? I can't figure out what the second thing is. They are both USB right?

A:Which receiver?

Hi Guys

I was wondering if someone could give me a bit of advice. At the moment my computer is connected to a Netgear router which I use to connect to the net. Both my kids computers are also connected to the router, and we all share the connection. My LAN is wired not wireless, and my router is only a couple of months old and hasn't caused me any problems (so far)so I don't want to replace it. The thing is I am going to buy a laptop with wireless capabilities, and want to be able to use it downstairs without having to run a cable from the spare port on my router. So basically my question is this; is there some kind of wireless receiver available which i could plug into my router and allow me to surf from the comfort of my sofa? If it is possible, would doing this present the same kind of slight security issues which a wireless LAN do, eg someone using my connection? Second small question. As I said we all share the connection, and I wondered if it is possible to limit the amount of bandwidth each of the kids use. If one of them is downloading a game patch for example, and I go online the connection is quite slow. Is it possible to set a maximum bandwidth allocation for example 33% of the available amount, or make the value dynamic so if someone else connects, the bandwidth is split between the 2 or 3 users?

Thanks for any help

Not sure if I'm in the right section.

Hi, I have a TV that has integrated DTV features but unfortunately only has MPEG-2 decoders so it can't pick up the Soarview transmissions, only Freeview (I'm in NI).

I saw this on Amazon and was wondering if it would work: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Freecom-Digital-DVB-T-Freeview-receiver/dp/B000ALAWQ6

Although, I'm not sure what decoders Soarview HD uses (does someone know?). Also, will this be able to decode Soarviews MPEG-4 transmissions instead of just the HD ones?

Hope I made this clear.
