Desktop setting and Internet Options wont work

Q: Desktop setting and Internet Options wont work

Hi, I have xp home eddition with 4 user accounts. 2 accounts work fine the other 2 are having problems.

The desktop settings will not change. You can click what you want and hit apply but changes will not be made and when you open them up again they are back to where they were (which is different to what they should be).

Same for internet options. They have gone to 'never dial a connection' also cannot change home page etc. In the two problem accounts the internet is inaccessable.

Also when you click 'start' button the whole left hand column is blank.

The whole appearance of the accounts is like half xp style and half classic windows style.

I have done a sytem restore (that wont work) says no changes have been made, run adaware and spybot plus avg virus scan (all were updated).

The 2 working accounts are working perfectly!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I wont be able to try out all the helpful information you are going to give me until tomorrow night.

I hope someone can help.

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Desktop setting and Internet Options wont work

Delete the offending accounts. Reboot and make new ones. Sometimes user accounts become corrupt.

I've been looking for solutions to this problem but I just can't find one.

So I have a dell it has w7. The internet has been working on here perfectly for the past few years, and a few days ago..I believe it was friday it started randomly not working on and off again. This desktop is a few rooms away from the router so is connected by a really long wire, which has been working fine for a really long time.

Yesterday I tried to fix it myself so I moved the router to the back and it still wouldn't work. It has that red x in the bottom right corner and what it was connected to earlier, when it was going on and off..I for some reason disabled it and thought I could just re enable it but..it now says no nearby connection!! And it just wont find connect to the router or something im not sure what to do.

A:[SOLVED] internet wont work on this desktop

Hi imawesome

Since you might not remember all the changes you made when trying this and that for the last few days, let's try for a simple, easy list to help fix things.

1) See if another PC can connect to the Internet using that same wire. [A wired Internet connection is usually automatically detected by a PC running any recent version of Windows - XP, Vista, or 7]
2) If yes, then there's nothing wrong with your ISP, your router, or your ethernet wire.
3) If no = there's a problem with your ISP, your router, or your ethernet wire.
---a) power off your "helper" computer.
---b) unplug & power off the router for 3 minutes [If there is also a "broadband modem" for DSL, cable, or satellite connected to your router, also power it off for those same three minutes].
---c) *plug the power cord back into the router and power it on *[if you also have the broadband modem, plug the broadband modem in first, and also power it on first]
---d) check the entire length of the ethernet cable for any sign of damage. If you have a spare cable of the same type (usually Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6), you can try that instead.
---e) power on your "helper" computer. If it now connects OK, you can now move on to troubleshooting your original computer.

* if no Internet is detected, nor any local area connection at all -- on any computer -- you may have more extensive troubleshooting to do. First rule out any trouble with your ISP. Give them a quick ... Read more

I'm trying to help a friend with a series of Malware related problems, He was hit by "Antispyware Soft "

It seems to regenerate, and sets him up to use a proxy server. Now, it has somehow blocked him from even going to look at Internet Options at all, he gets an error, "cancelled due to restrictions on this computer"

The only way I can help him is to login remotely, and now I can't even do that. He's a local admin on a standalone computer, any ideas on how to get to Internet Options?

I have strange issue with Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center. Since it was upgraded from 8, there have been issues with Software Store. Despite internet connection working fine with Firefox and other applications, Store would not connect to the internet. After long investigation I found out that Proxy server setting in Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings must be disabled in order to get Store working again. For some reason proxy server only stays disabled for the current session, which means when the windows is rebooted it comes back enabled again. My question is how to make it stay permanently disabled, as I don't use any proxy. Thanks.

It maybe coincidental this happened "after" someone used my computer.

However, now since when i click on tools and internet options, the later does NOT respond. Also another route I use to take was via "start" control panel, internet connections, and all those links work as nomal. But the last link via this route to "change internet connections" etc does NOT work either. I hope I have exlained good enough my problem and NOT said to much. Would appreciate help with this problem.

It sounds like you POSSIBLY have some sort of malware in your machine. I suggest as a first step to click on the red triangle in the upper right hand corner or the dialogue box and ask a moderator to move your thread to the malware section.

One of the malware guru's will ask you to download and run HighJack This and then post a log. Let one of the malware guru's examine the log and see if you have malware problems.

I am a very old and inexperienced user who has to change ISP for a list of reasons. I am with Virgin at present but not much longer. Last night I tried to set up a Hotmail account using my very old XP machine. I did not use my windows 7 in case of any problems. I discovered I needed Live Mail so I had to download this. As part of the process I was asked did I want to have MSN and the Bing toolbar installed. I accepted both assuming both were required. My live Mail account has set up fine.
However, every time I try to use the Internet Explorer shortcut it brings up an MSN 'set up account' page which leads me to a a page which says my XP copy of msn is out of date and offers for me to order a CD-at my cost. I can only seemingly access Internet Explorer nowvia my router set-up.
Do I have to have msn to have hotmail? How do I go back to being able to use Internet Explorer as my web browser and how do I stop this msn screen appearinfg all the time? I don't want to buy msn as the XP is on its last legs.
Can someone please help me in very simple terms

It all sounds fishy. I would check for viruses.

Internet Explorer:
Regardless of the Windows version press Win Key or Start button, then locate RUN menu. If not present, it can be called by WIN+R combination (Press and hold WIN key then press R key).
Copy and paste this line to that Run window:
Click OK button. Internet Explorer should popup.

A:Solved: Help setting up internet on new desktop pc

Make sure the desktop you bought has wireless capabilities then:

Manual method
Step 1: open the software utility that manages your wireless connection on your computer. This scans for all wireless networks in your area.
Step 2: Look for your NETGEAR wireless network name (SSID), and select it.
Step 3: Enter the password click Connect.

WPS method
Make sure your wireless device (ie your new computer) supports WPS (WiFi protected Set-up)

Step 1: Press the WPS button on the router (button that looks like a padlock with ((( ))) around it.
Step 2: within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your computer or follow the instructions that came with your computer to complete the WPS process. The computer will then be connected to your router.
Note: WPS does not support WEP security.

If new computer is not wireless capable:
Use an ethernet cable to establish a wired connection.
Step 1: plug ethernet cable into Lan 1 hole on router connect other end to your computer.
You should now be connected

Okay so to make a long story short, I was having major issues with my computer in general. It took me about two weeks to go through it and "fix" it. As of now, I have internet access, have run MULTIPLE spyware, adware, malware, virus scans, removed threats, and cleaned everything out.

As of yesterday, I was able to use everything on my computer with FULL functionality, and WOW, did I feel like I accomplished something!

My computer hadn't been online for a while (a few months) and as you can imagine, everything in the world wanted to update from Microsoft.

Each installation at a time, I restarted my system.

This morning, to my enjoyment, IE7 did not work AT ALL. I couldn't get on the internet as this was the only available program.

I restored my computer to a time yesterday PRIOR to installing ANY microsoft updates. I utilized the SEARCH resource off the START menu, and was able to view the web via the SEARCH THE INTERNET option here. To my discovery, it states that microsoft is having issues with IE7 working if it was installed BEFORE the ServicePack3 was. As well, you cannot uninstall IE7 until you uninstall SP3.

At this point, I have REMOVED the SP3 Update (via add/remove programs)

I attempted to uninstall IE7 and install IE8, neither was successful.

I NOW have full internet access however certain things are not working.

I CANNOT download IE8 nor can I download anything else, I tried the hijackthis so I could create a LOG entry per research I... Read more

Greetings all, an apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Computer is a home build desktop, Asus M/B, AMD HD6670 graphics, 256meg SSD as boot drive c: Win7 32 bit.

I had a few problems with this computer and finally did a full format and re-install with system disk pre SP1. Everything working fine. Launched into full updates from windows, loaded all available updates and guess what; windows Desktop Manager fails and won't start. Computer is otherwise fine. I've installed latest drivers for the video card, updated my M/B bios, run sfc /scannow which showed all system files OK, full pre boot virus scan with Avast, full scan with Malwarebytes.

I've done all this about five times now. The problem seems to his after installing Iexplorer 10 and/or SP1. I haven't figured that one out yet, and I'd rather have a nearly working computer than one in a constant state of upheaval.

Having been looking around the web for an answer it would seem that this problem is not limited to certain hardware but seems quite happy to occur with just about anything. Any help that solves this will be much appreciated and rewarded with a curry and a beer.

A:Internet programs wont work even thoe internet is connected

I'm not sure if this will work but it does for my laptop. Restart the other computer which is the main source. Then go into one of the accounts on that computer and check that the internet is working.
Disconnect from the network on your new computer and then connect again.
If this doesn't work, make sure all the plugs are in your router and correctly plugged in. Turn the modem off and then on again.
I'm not sure what to do about the firewall settings but make sure that they allow access and that you haven't blocked it. Also try and repair the connection through msn when you try and log in. A warning will come up and click 'troubleshoot'. Then see what is wrong. Click 'repair' and see if that fixes it.

I hope this helps

I have a desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit system. About 3 months ago, as I was web surfing, Norton Anti Virus popped up and asked me to renew my subscription. The modem is not faulty as I have another computer running Windows XP Home Premium SP 1, and it connects to the internet on it. I have even tried using command prompt to identify it, but nothing. Hi there,

Just because the card is old does not mean that the drivers are included in Windows. Windows includes the most common, not the oldest. i'd recomment checking the model number on the card and searching Google or DriverGuide for the right driver. If you post the model number, i can find it for you if you need.

Hope this helps.

When I used to change my wallpaper I had 5 options to fit the image to the screen, cant remember them exactly but they were something like; Stretch to screen, fit horizontal, fit vertical, centered, and tiled.

Why is it now that I only have; Centered, Tiled and stretch to screen?

Was this an update because this is really annoying!?

It was much easier to fit the wallpaper to screen without stretching it when I could fit horizontal and vertical?

Why can I not do this now?

A:Vista Desktop Wallpaper Fit options, I thought there were 5 options?

Hi Lersince, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Do you have DreamScene installed yet? They will be added afterwards.

Hope this helps,

hi, i have a home made pc that a friend built. there was a problem with xp so i reinstalled it but now i cant connect to the internet. i know i need to reinstall the network drivers but i am having problems. i do not have a cd to install & hes moved away from the area
the motherboard is P4C800-E DELUXE. i googled it got on the website downloaded what i think are the correct drivers but when i opened the downloaded file there was no network drivers.
when i look in device manager ive only got a 1394 net adaptor.
i remember my friend downloaded another when he fixed it last time
can someone please help me?

A:Reinstalled xp now internet wont work

Using the same method, d/l the drivers for your motherboard from the website.
http://support.asus.com/download/download_item.aspx?product=1&model=P4C800-E Deluxe
The xp drivers should be the third ones down under lan. If you are using a different os, adjust accordingly.

Perhaps the first time the download was not properly completed?

Back in device manager, click the "view" drop-down menus, and select "Show hidden devices".

Now you should be able to both Wireless and Ethernet NIC (if available), right click and select update driver.
