Q: I'm computer illiterate and don't know how to select the good from the bad to delete after the scan!

I don't know what poses a threat or not... Preferred Solution: I'm computer illiterate and don't know how to select the good from the bad to delete after the scan!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi. I have AOL and Internet Explorer on my desktop. My cousin has been downloading a bunch of porn on his username and I have tried to delete most of it but here is what happens: I will be on AOL and Internet Explorer will randomly open using "coolbiz.com" eventhough I have changed the home page to msn.com SEVERAL times. Previously, it would open with another porn site. Somtimes it will open up to 50 some pages of Internet Explorer, sometimes it would do anything for a while. So my question is: How do I get Internet Explorer to stop popping up (regardless of the page it opens up with) while I am on AOL? I ran the HijackThis log and here it is:

OK , having major difficulties getting these fixes to work. I have windows vista premium home, hjt will do the scan but halfway through says for some reason "your system denied write access to the Hosts file" I tried to set hjt to run as administrator but that is grayed out, so when I select "ok" it finishes the scan but no copy is posted in notepad. I did actually select a few known trash and it did remove them. dds appears to do its scan but doesn't post any results in notepad. And rootrepeal gives me a device controller error and wont scan. Does anyone have any suggesting on what to do? I did a system repair back to the 30 of December but that seemed to on reduce the popups.

Welcome to BCPlease try this:Please download RSIT by random/random and save it to your Desktop.Note: You will need to run this tool while connected to the Internet so it can download HijackThis if it is not located on your system. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding Rist attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program. If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator.Click Continue after reading the disclaimer screen.Leave the drop down box set to default: "List/folders created or modified in the last 1 month (30 days). When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad.Save the log file to your desktop and copy/paste the contents into a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here.Important: Be sure to mention that you tried to follow the Prep Guide but were unable to get DDS to run.If RSIT did not work, then reply back here.

I have a computer here where kaspersky found a trojan Win32.TDSS.y ... Kaspersky couldn?t get rid of it so we were looking through the web and found a removal tool ...

Delete Packed.Win32.TDSS.y automatically - Download Spyware Cease

I have two WD hds, a 40GB and an 80GB. When I first attempted to clean install Win XP to the 40GB last yr, I had problems until someone suggested resizing (I use Partition Magic) the C partition to 2GB. I did that and it installed. I later successfully resized C to 7 or 8GB. But more recently when I tried to resize to an even larger size (around 15GB I think it was), it caused all kinds of BSODs. I did notice a few days ago that the BIOS was loading the boot virus checker (it did it itself probably in self preservation) and I disabled that, but I am still having problems from time to time with apps not loading, MSIE locking up, etc. until I reboot. Then other apps may go awry at a later point. Someone suggested changing the drives to Cable Select from Master and Slave, but I read somewhere at WD support that Cable Select should not be used with Win XP. <?> Is that true? I really need more space on C drive... Windows seems to think no one partitions and has 100+Gigs on "its drive".

Short of reformatting C, reinstalling XP and all my apps, what else can I do? I am really getting annoyed with these problems and considering buying a new system! I am strongly considering this, but til March, I have no $$ to do this!

System: ASUS A7V w/AMD TBird 1.2G CPU, 768MB RAM, BIOS updated to last one available (1011), onbd Promise driver updated to last one available, Win XP SP1 and MSIE with all the latest <and plentiful> updates.

Thanks to anyone with some sugge... Read more

Hello,
as the eye catching sub-title mentions I could use a little help. I don't know much about computers so please bear with me. I bought a gaming computer from a person who loaded Windows 7 on the system. I like the look of the new OS but to be brutally honest I'm not even sure how to move from being " in game" and minimizing the game to be able to look up other things on the net. With the older windows program it was easy- jsut a crtl alt del to minimize and I was off to the races. Now when I attempt to do this it will minimize th agme but it doesn't allow me to open a new window. I would greatly appreciate some direction from some more knowledgeable folks. And yes I know a beta or new system like this is no place for a NOOB like me to be lost and asking basic questions. As mentioned I just enjoy the new look and could use some help as I experiement and explore 7. Thanks !

A:Computer illiterate needs a little help !

Hi Nica, I usually just use Alt + Tab to switch between windows when playing games and another way to get task manager is to press Ctl+Shift+Esc.

Hello to all!

I am new to this and will try to explain my situation as much as possible. I have this laptop that was given to me 3 years ago. It is still fine however for the couple of months the following have been happening:

- My computer shut down on me twice with no warning at all
- I took my computer to a "techie" who told me and charged me some arms and legs for a 2 GB add on but it seems that I am still having the same problems with performance.
- Can't view any videos online. They will start downloading and play but then will slow down. I will be able to hear the clips but the video will be at such a slow pace...It is so depressing.

Please, should someone be kind enough to help me. I would appreciate it so much!!

Thank you.

Hi everyone,

I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, and I promise I searched for it before starting a new thread. I've run out of time though, and need the quickest possible resolution.

My laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545) became very slow, and then became unresponsive half the time. I tried diagnosing it, cleaning out programs, staying on top of updates, drivers, etc. It finally came to the point that it freezes immediately upon startup, and has to be forced closed every time. I thought my reinstallation CDs were gone, but after 2 months now, they showed up out of nowhere.

I would like to restore my laptop back to factory settings, and have already backed up my important files onto CDs (pics, MS Word docs, and 'Users' folder on C. Here is the problem:

I have tried every which way I know how, and cannot access the Advanced Boot Options menu, only the Windows Boot Manager. I'll select an OS and press F8 like it instructs and all this does is takes me to startup where I freeze, then have to forceclose and start the process again. I have attempted every one of the 'F's', tapping, holding, and combination of both lol, including Ctl + F11, Del, Esc.

I'm not great with computers, but I know enough to run scans, diagnose smaller problems, and things to that nature. I've read a few times about booting up from the disc, and I'm not sure how to do this? I've done exactly as the manual says, but 6 hours later, here I still am.

I'm in the process of changing over some of our work computers (auto salvage yard) from ancient XP boxes to moderately modern Windows 7 units.  I'm not a "computer guy", but I'm literate enough.  My co-workers on the other hand, have very limited computer knowledge.  Basically I want to set these up so they're more or less fool proof.  On the XP machines I'm running Avira, WinPatrol, and Secunia PSI, and that seems to do a pretty good job of keeping things up to date and preventing these monkeys from loading the computers up with viruses and malware.  What would be the best set up for a Windows 7 machine in this situation?

A:Best set up for the computer illiterate?

Hey there 16vCorey.

Here's my 2 cents worth.

I would move from Avira to Avast! (which is also free) and also install the Free version of MalwareBytes (MBAM), which can be found here.

Not sure if Avira does it since it's been awhile since I've used it (I left it for Avast!) but the free version of Avast! does some real-time blocking and even before I had the Pro Version of MBAM (which I'm running now) Avast! did a pretty good job of keeping me out of the weeds....since I don't always surf safe.

And, to keep things easy for your self, you may want to stay with the 2.0 version of SecuniaPSI since the latest version does not play well with Windows 7 which I'm running and found out the hard way.

If you need links to the 2.0 version, let me know.

And please forgive any typos, I'm out here fussing around on the Internets with a Live Lucid Puppy and it's a bit clunky.

Hope that helps.

About six months ago a Trojan horse was downloaded onto my computer and my computer said that it had stored into a temp file, and i have never been able to find it to delete it. Heck i don't know that I even could. But from this point on, my computer has been running extremely painfully slow and it has been locking up or freezing and I literally have to unplug the whole system in order to get it unfroze. I had just replaced my tower with a Dell, and then I realized I did have any of the dvd or burning ablity, Heck I can't even copy my assigments for class. Which I might add has been a pain. So when my friend told me about this forum I thought I'd drag out this tower and give ya all a try. I think we have only had it for less than two years. If someone can help me, it would be a life saver. :

Hi, just so I'm not fooling anyone, "I Know Next To Nothing, Feel Free to Educate Me!!" With that said, here we go. I recently purchased a Gateway M-6846 lap top and had the option of a 32 or 64 bit platform. 64 sounded better(bigger number you understand) and the saleperson said 64 bit is the wave of the future and so thats where I sit at the present. I use my lap top for emails, word processing(Word 2007), to play poker, and to send and receive pictures of my grandbabies. How does that sit with 64 bit? Do I need it or should I switch to 32 bit? Is Media player 11 compatible with 64 bit? So far I'm not sure that I really see the advantages that the salesperson spoke of. In my ignorance, am i just missing it?
I have more questions, but I'd better start here. THANKS Jim

A:Please help a computer illiterate out

There's no real difference between the 64 bit and 32 bit versions to most users.
If you want to use older hardware there may be issues.
Also, some hardware doesn't come with 64 bit drivers.

Most 32 bit programs will work on 64 bit OS' - although there are still a few holdouts.
Most significantly, if you use the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer you'll notice that there's no 64 bit version of Adobe/Macromedia Flash.
But it works just fine with the 32 bit version of Internet Explorer.

The biggest caution is to ensure that there are 64 bit drivers available for any hardware that you may want to use/purchase. Beyond that, just sit back and enjoy!

Your memory modules are not paired correctly or it's mixed improper. You generally want to have the same types of ram in a pair and put them in the colored memory slots. If you was messing with the bios settings and not messing with hardware, then you have messed with the timings or ganged/unganged them. If you're not sure what you changed you can also try to go back and use a saved config or reset to factory defaults.

Also, I am massively A.D.D. so I apologize in advance for any skipping around I might do. Now for the problem: I have to Run as Admin to get my internet explorer to open. I actually think I found the answer on how to fix this problem, or a possibility on how to fix it, in another post, but I'm to computer illiterate to figure out how to impliment the solution. If I don't it says the internet has stopped working, then it tries to find a solution, and then says something along the lines of there is no solution, or at least they can't find one. I read a post, that was about a different problem, but I thought it might work, but it said you had to get into the registry, and I have no idea how. So if I am reasking something that has already been asked, that's why. Oh and there is one more thing I've noticed. Hopefully it's ok that I'm posting the two problems together. I don't know if one has anything to do with the other. My computer puts up an error that says No more AllocSharedMemory. Anyone know what that's about?? Thanks in advance for your time!!

Sounds like your resolution is set to low. Increase it by right clicking the desktop, and choose screen resolution. Under resolution, set it to the recommended, and click apply and then ok.

Hi, my name is Nicole, and I have a Toshiba Laptop that I recieved in December. My entire life is on this thing, including 4 years of my handicapped son's medical records, notes and documentation. My laptop first crashed in late December , thank goodness there was nothing on it as of then. I was told numerous times to make sure I back it up. But of course I did not. I figured it crashed once what was the chance it would again. Well... it did a little over a month ago and this time I HAD EVERYTHING on this. And of course I still did not backup. I guess I just don';t learn. WELL after getting some data recovered I have finally restored my laptop back to what I needed and I need to back it up. BUT I DON"T KNOW HOW. I have searched and searched but I just don't get it. Could someone explain to me in layman's terms exactly how to do this?
Thanks Nicole

Ok im gonna take a little of johnwill's words here but here we go. You can backup in about 2 ways. One is to copy files to another destination. There i reccomend cobian backup but it will not backup the operating system as well. This is a free software:
http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm
Now of course you can also do a drive image. This is basically an image of the pc's operating system, applications, and any files you may have saved on it. For that there is acronis true image. It can do the image, schedule when it will run, and fully automate the process if need be. It is not free but can be purchased as well from the website here:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

Now, you will need some type of medium for saving the backups to. Personally, i purchased an external hard drive enclosure kit which turns a standard internal hd to an external one but you could also buy a sealed box with the external hd and save your images and file backups to that. Another option is dvd which is possible if you have a dvd burner. This you can save your images to a dvd rom or purchase re-writable dvds so that you can write many times to the same disc (hd is most cost effective in my opinion). That is pretty much all you need to know about backups.
