Yoga 13 (IdeaPad) - dead F12 and PrintScreen keys

Q: Yoga 13 (IdeaPad) - dead F12 and PrintScreen keys

I was doing some tech support for my mom regarding screen captures and discovered the print screen key (and eventually the F12 key as well) is not working, on an otherwise fully functional keyboard. The laptop in question is a Yoga13 running Windows 8.1 (Yes, it survived the forced Windows 10 update era) It will be needed tomorrow, so I didn't want to do anything drastic just yet; I've rebooted the computer and cleaned the keyboard as much as possible (those chiclet style keys don't pop off the way old style keys did, so cleaning under them is problematic). No effect. I've found workarounds for all of the features assigned to these keys - the onscreen keyboard handles the normal F12 and PrintScreen functions, and Power Options allows for brightness adjustments independent of the F12's special function (which is good, because I cranked the brightness way down testing the keyboard - F11 works just fine), but we'd rather not have to deal with these solutions long term. We had the keyboard replaced at a reputable computer repair shop a while back - I'll be getting in touch with the proprietor there tomorrow, and I've already made a post on TechSupportForum. I'll keep you posted on what I try based on their advice.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a  Lenovo Yoga 710 (IdeaPad), a few weeks ago I was working on it, and suddenly (and with NO reason) it died, so I sent it to the Repair center 3 weeks ago because its NEW, and still in warranty. I've reviewed the repair status several times, but the last update was on July 31st, and it seems that the part needed to repair my machine is unavailable. I use my PC on a daily basis and it is really affecting my work/studies (I'm a PhD student)! Moreover I'm finishing my Fellowship in the US en returning back to Argentina by September 15th, so I really, REALLY, need your help! I've phoned several times to the Lenovo service center, but nobody gave me a helpful answer. What can I do to get my PC back before my flight date?

Hello! Part 1: After the latest drivers update (Wacom develops driver for Lenovo Active Pen 2), the long press of the top side button leads to activation of screenshot event (kind of Snip and Sketch). Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

I am a very frustrated and angry customer at the moment as i keep running into Road Block and unacceptable answers.  This issue is enough to cause me to never buy another Lenovo laptop or any laptop at Best Buy!I bought my computer in July and in September i noticed a key had popped off-  the "< ," key next to the M key.  I have used the key board only when i was setting up-  now at my office and at customers i set it in downward dog mode ;-) and use a blue tooth key board.    So it is not from use that it broke.   I took the laptop into BEST BUY and was told that the key was missing a metal part on the back so they could not fix it onsite-  i would have to send it in and be without my laptop for a week to 10 days - unacceptable -  this was a month or more ago. I searched on the LENOVO website and could not find a way to purchase a single or the entire set of Keys!  I am self employed as a software consultant.   My life is pretty busy and i finally decided today to bite the bullet and ask for a call from Lenovo support.  Again i am told the only way to fix this is to send my laptop in for a repair.  I asked to just be able to buy a KEY - i am told that well they do not sell individual keys - they would replace the entire keyboard!  So sell me the keyboard and or send me one an i will take into best buy to have them replace it while i wait.  They cannot do that.   I live... Hi Guys

Whist I was using notepad at home to write something I found that the following keys on my laptop are dead r, u,y, 2,4,and 0. virtually all the computing I have done in the last few days is general browsing for television listings and email. I use use notepad for wordprocessing beacuse its quick.

I have only tested out the lowercase alphabet and the set of numbers, but not the full set. I am using another computer from a different location to type this posting. My keyboard is a standard Sony laptop qwerty keyboard.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop, WinXP Pro, 512Mb RAM. I have checked for viruses, fierwall and ran spybot and the laptop appears to be clean. I rebooted with a restore point from a couple of days ago when I know everything was working and it still made no difference this morning. The keys are still dead. I cannot check the keys with an external keyboard to compare becasue I do not have a spare one. I will try to get one.

In the meantime if anyone has suggestions it would be most welcome.

May I add I was helped out by you guys ony a few days ago when my external USB hardrive suddenly became inactive and the problem was solved by a 'USB drive cleanup'

Many thanks in advance.

So this is the problem. I have a dell monitor at an apartment and a samsung tv at another house. I move my laptop back and forth.

I left the settings for the Dell monitor and had it as "Make this my main display" where the built in display is extended desktop.

I plug the Samsung TV in and b/c of the settings and the resolution of the Dell it does not support that resolution. So I can't open the "Screen Resolution" page because it thinks it is putting it on the TV which is blank. I can't see where the mouse is to move it over. If you unplug the monitor to move it over to the built-in it no longer gives you options to the 2nd monitor settings to change the "make my main display" back to built-in while you adjust the resolution for the 2nd display.

See what I mean? How can I Move a window that is on a 2nd screen not showing back to the part of the extended desktop that is?

So I've been asked to give my Mom a hand with her laptop. It's a Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13, though the website seems to drop or parenthesize the IdeaPad part of that, running a 64 bit version of Windows 8.1

Two keys aren't working, the F12/increase screen brightness key and the PrintScreen key. (This is why we just discovered it, no idea when the error cropped up.) I've found workarounds for all of the things the keys do - brightness can be adjusted in Power Options, and the F12 and PrintScreen functions can both be duplicated using the on screen keyboard function. But they're kinda annoying and cumbersome, and the error may be symptomatic of a larger problem.

I've tried rebooting the computer and cleaning the keyboard thus far, to no avail (though it is using one of these stupid new chiclet keyboard styles, which makes popping off keys and cleaning the actually functional part of the keyboard impossible through the normal, convenient method I've used in the past.)

The keyboard was replaced relatively recently, and I will be getting in touch with the gentleman who handled that when his store is open tomorrow. I'll also be checking with the official tech support people at Lenovo, but I find this and other fora are usually much better at cutting through that ploddingly systematic approach that big tech support divisions use and finding the real problem in a reasonable timeframe. If either of these resources pays off, I'll post the solution here as well.

A:Dead keys on Keyboard - Lenovo laptop

You can head over to Keyboard Tester and test each key. If the keyboard is failing, chances are there are more than just one dead key. If all keys are registering a press, but they do not perform a function they are supposed to, such as brightness control, it could be a drivers/software issue. You mentioned the keyboard being a recent replacement. What happened to the first (original) keyboard? Did the laptop suffer a liquid spillage? The problem history could give us perspective.

Hello to all,
I have been scouring the internet looking for answers to this. Maybe someone else out there can help. I have 13 VGN-BX760 laptops. I have started upgrading them from XP to Win 7 x64. Evrything works fine except for the Shift keys! Neither of them work at all. (actually, the first one worked fine for about 3 months) I have tried new keyboards, nope. I have tried all of the filters and sticky keys tricks, nope. I have called Sony and they say there is no known issue. I find that hard to beleive since it has already happened to 2 of them. Shift keys work perfectly on an external keyboard, so I know it's not the OS.

Ideas?

Apparently his baby was bashing away on the keyboard and now when it is switched on all keyboard lights come on, the laptop makes 3 very loud and intrusive beeps (beeeeep....beep.beep) and the screen is completely dead, no flickers, no nothing.

I've seen a lot of people ask the opposite and I tried the solutions given to them in hopes of helping with my problem but they don;'t work. Basically, I want to be able to use the functions of the F1-F12 keys by pressing the Fn key like in other laptops so that I could use the F# keys for something else. I play games on emulators, you see, and the F1-12 keys are for quicksaves (by shift + F1-12 and just pressing the F1-12 to load) which I couldn't use because pressing the F1-12 keys right now would just make them use their functions instead of letting me save my game and it's kind of a problem for me. Can anyone help? Would the same keys fail when in the BIOS (testing on password but not saving it) or booting on another device like live media? Check if the same keys have issue using external USB keyboard as well as online test.

The placement they are located are very localized as it does woth usual physical keyboard issue that you can check / cleaned or replace if needed.

Hi Eliatrope ,

Technically Z580 keys are removable so it is a yes.

Keyboard specification and here ( page 28 ):
Full-size keyboard, 6-row, multimedia Fn keys, recovery key6 Row QWERTY (Standard) Full Keyboard
FRU list page 94 - 121 as sample part

Hardware manual don't offer specific key removal guide as entire board is replaced but some party would offer individual key repair such as here and here .

Take time to review the highlighted links first  and as usual technician practice , to try it with one NON commonly used key .

The title may sound a bit odd, but here's my problem (I tried searching the internet, with no result):

I'm creating my own ancient greek layout, but I can't get the dead keys to work. Alt Gr normally works, but not with the dead keys.

´ + α should give ά, but instead, pressing ' once returns ´´ (i.e. 2 accents), and pressing a afterwards has no effect (besides adding an α). Why is this?

Furthermore, pressing AltGr+' should return the dead key ῀, but instead, it does nothing. Pressing a afterwards just returns an α.

I hope you can help me out.

A:Creating new layout: dead keys do not work, but return double diacritic

go to Control panel | then Region and Language | "keyboards and Languages" tab | "change keyboards" | "add" | then add one of the Greek options or the "United States- International" |
then a little keyboard looking thing will pop-up in the taskbar to allow you to change the imput language

I have already tried uninstalling the driver and there are no updates available. Prior to this happening, I did have a brief glitch where the number 6 kept slipping in randomly while I typed. I assumed it to be stuck, but, well...now it isn't working at all. Could it be a physical issue with the keyboard? These are pretty random keys to go out all at once.  Thanks very much!

Hi, the latptop is only about 2.5 months old now... 3 weeks ago randomly the keyboard's keys on the laptop itself stopped working. No clue why, Ive checked drivers, did a reboot, tried safe mode, etc... It's only on the laptop itself. The keys that work are tyhg caps lock num lock and maybe a couple others... Ive never spilled anything on the laptop nor have I ever dropped it. I was in love with this laptop for the price I paid for it at Best Buy until the keyboard stopped working on it... It just randomly happened and I'm not sure why. The keys don't appear to stick or anything like that... (normal keystrokes just nothing happens in result of clicking them) I am using a keyboard plugged into it right now... I really need to get this fixed and I'm very upset at the fact it happened just 2 months after the purchase... So that cancels out my bestbuy 1 month warranty right there. I really can't deal with this much longer considering the fact that I was planning to use this laptop for my work.. If I can't get a simple easy fix I will have to find something new somewhere else... sorry to say. Praying for an easy solution/fix.

I recently purchased an Ideapad P400, and I have noticed that the default for  the keys where  F1 and F2, etc. usually are, are now the mute and volume buttons.  To access the F1, F2....F12 keys, you now have to press Fn + your desired F key.   While I understand many people probably find this useful, I play several games where these keys are essential, and it makes playing the games nearly impossible to play if you have to hold down the Fn key in addition to the desired F key.  So my question is, is it possible to reverse the Function keys?  I would much rather press Fn + F1 to mute than have to press press Fn + F1 to access F1.    Thanks you in advance.
