T420s Nvidia Graphics Card & Express Card Question...

Q: T420s Nvidia Graphics Card & Express Card Question...

Hello, and thank you for checking out my post. My apologies for writing a book, but I'm hoping to give as much detail as needed the first go round. I just received my custom-built T420s (4170-CTO) and have a couple technical questions/concerns about it. The details of my configuration are located at the bottom of this post. First off, one of the deciding factors of my purchase was the discrete graphics card. On the T420s I chose NVIDIA NVS 4200M Optimus Graphics 1GB, Intel Core i7-2620M Processor?. I was thrilled to have more than 256 MB of dedicated graphics memory for my games. Upon receiving my laptop, though, I ran the Windows Experience Index and saw that the lowest score was the graphics card, which is identified as Intel HD Graphics Family and has 64 MB of dedicated graphics memory. After my heart started beating again I checked Device Manager and found under Display both Intel HD Graphics Family and NVIDIA NVS 4200M listed as working with up-to-date drivers. When I configured the laptop online there was no mention of hybrid graphics, so I'm not sure why I have an Intel Graphics card on the machine. My current laptop that I was looking to replace is a T61p with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M graphics card, and only that NVIDIA card is shown under Device Manager and in the Windows Experience / Performance Information. Thinking that perhaps disabling the Intel card would cause the NVIDIA card to take over, I disabled that through Device Manager. My screen went black and after feeling quite stupid I rebooted my computer. The default Windows Display driver kicked in, allowing me to see well enough to get back to Device Manager and enable the Intel Graphics. I counted myself lucky that I wasn't stuck with a working computer with a blank screen, but I'm still confused about why the NVIDIA card isn't the only display adapter on the machine, and why it isn't the default/main adapter. Most importantly, will it be usable to run my games? My second question is regarding the PCI ExpressCard slot. My aim for this machine was to have a HDD to store my data (I selected the 320GB 7200 RPM HDD) and a SSD to boot and run my programs from. Another reason for choosing this machine was the comment on Lenovo's site stating that a user booted his T420s from a solid state drive in the PCI ExpressCard slot, which was exactly was I was looking for. I need the CD/DVD drive, so I can't put the second hard drive in a caddy. During configuration I chose the option for an Express Card Slot & 4 in 1 Card Reader & Smart Card Reader?. From what I can tell, the Express Card slot is not connected to the Card Readers and I will not lose use of those ports. When I opened the computer up to install more RAM, I saw what is labeled in Lenovo's hardware manual as the Express Card slot, apparently empty - which is great! Now I need to figure out what kind of SSD to look for, and on that I'm kinda lost.I'm guessing that my ExpressCard slot is 34mm and PCI form factor rather than USB... but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a not-incredibly-educated guess. I'm also not sure where mSATA comes into play for me, if at all. Looking at SSDs on sites such as newegg.com, I'm unsure of what form factor to choose - ExpressCard, PCI-E, mSATA, and/or 1.8"? ----- The tech specs of my configured T420s (copy/pasted from the order status) are as follows. I hope this means more to you than it does to me.? Part #:0A71709 VBB INTCRI7-2620MPR(2.7GHZ?45M3092 VBB GENWIN7HOMEPREM64 (which ultimately doesn't matter as I'll be booting from Windows 7 Enterprise on my SSD)0A68718 SBB GW7 HP64 US ENGLISH?0A68976 SBB 14HD+LDBCKLTANTGLDSPMBBBRD?0A68972 SBB NVD12PNS2OPG1GBICI7-2620MP?45M4569 VBB 2GBPC3-10600DDR3 1333SODMM? I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: T420s Nvidia Graphics Card & Express Card Question...

The T420s with Nvidia GPU has two graphics card that can switch on the fly, if you only want the discrete gpu, just go into your bios menu under graphics there is an option to select discrete. With the Nvidia Optimus (which is what you have), it can switch between Nvidia and Intel GPU depending on your application needs. This will allow you to conserve battery or power. Expresscard slot 34 mm slot is occupied by the card reader that you ordered. What you are talking about within the ram slot cover, is the mPCIe slot, which can be occupied by a mSATA drive. http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T420s-T400s-T410s-removal-of-4-in-1-SD-card-...

There are some benchmarks that include the 256mb 6800 (non GT/GS). It's a decent card. Not as good as the GT or GS but still a decent card.

Hi for the last 4 months ive been trying to fix a problem that ive been having with my computer.
about 4 months ago I did a major pc upgrade where i replaced my motherboard, processor, ram, heat sink, power supply and case, the only things I used from the original computer where 2 HDD's, 1 SDD and my AMD radeon HD 6950 2gb.

Now ive have the most strange issue where i can be watching a video off the HDD or surfing the web on youtube etc and not long after I start the activity my computer will turn off like if I had flicked the switch on the back of the power supply and then it boots back up again and will run fine until i start up an activity again and then it does exactly the same thing and reboots, there is no BSOD shown nor Dumps Created.

Ive tried many things to sort this out and have RMA'ed the power supply and the motherboard (the motherboard wasn't a direct replacement as they didn't sell my original board anymore which was a gigabyte ga-x79-ud5, now i have an asus p9x79 deluxe). I have tried only plugging in one HDD/SSD and then tried a spare HDD when that failed, i have tried one ram stick at a time and still nothing.

now heres where it gets strange whilst trying to rule out differnt hardware i switched my AMD card out for a very old 512mb, pcie 1.0 x16 nvidia graphics and since then my computer has been running marvelously i can have it playing videos for hours, days even(although i havent properly tested for days) and not a single problem at all.

The comparison you are making between GPU brands is pointless as a diagnostic. The MAIN difference I can see is that one card requires external power, and the other one does not. A proper diagnostic would be to test another GPU that requires external power.

I've heard that the specific PSU you bought will sometimes not power all the hardware it is supposed so.
People saying it could barely power a SSD, or even an extra fan.

My thoughts. Try using another PSU, try using a similar GPU. Use your old PSU and see if it still happens for starters.

Good luck with Nvidea. I tried to get sortware to work around the Windows Media Center interface with the HP version of the Nvidea TV tuner card. Their reply was "Sorry, we only make the chips; the manufacturer does their own software." And, of course, HP, who doesn't have a clue as to how it works, blamed everything on Microsoft.

Hello,

I'm going to keep this question pretty general (non-spec-oriented) and see if it works, forgive me if I don't provide enough information.

I'm planning to purchase a new laptop and have a choice between a laptop that includes an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 card and one that does not include a graphics card. I don't know how to make this decision because I'm clueless about what graphics cards do.

Here is what I will use the laptop for: The most CPU intensive stuff will be Pro Tools 11 and other audio sequencing stuff, Photoshop and Illustrator and other graphics programs, and Camtasia. I have Premier Pro and AfterEffects video processing applications but I don't use them and I think the likelihood that I will become a power user is very low.

I am not a gamer at all.

Based on that, do I need the NVIDIA graphics card?

Again, my apologies if I'm not providing enough background to enable an accurate answer. I'm happy to follow up with more.

Thank you,
Tim

A:Going from ATI to Nvidia graphics card

Yes, I would suggest that you uninstall ATI drivers & Catalyst Control Center(and anything to do with ATI) prior to installing the new card. After that it's an easy switch, install the graphics card, the latest Nvidia drivers, sofware & utilities, and you're good to go.

Sounds more like a driver issue. Have you uninstalled and installed the latest video driers for the card?

Latest driver can be found here: http://www.nvidia.com/page/drivers.html
Which appears to be done at this very moment.

You can try this site for the drivers: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1715

You can not increase dedicated video memory, it is what it is. 512 MB

The system (motherboard) can share memory with the video card, my MSI shares 2 GB giving me a total of 4 GB of graphics memory.

Maybe save a little more money before you make a choice.

Well I seem to be only able to use the NT drivers I got with my card unfortunitly when I try and use the XP drivers when I bootup the PC and login to XP it hangs I have to restart and it still hangs which means probably im using the wrong drivers. So what im pritty much saying here is only the NT drivers work. But I dont get any options or nothing in the display properties it just lists the card memory used etc. So okay i can play Medal Of Honor / Return to castle Wolfestein etc probably half life any game that does not detect the card like the new ones like Grand Theft Auto 3 etc. Im annoyed at this i was looking forward to playing Battelfield 1942. Looks like im stuck with what games i got. But why cant it play MOD3 etc which requires a 16mb card and GTA3 dont ? Because it's not proparly installed ? And why does the card hang using the XP drivers or Win2k drivers. its a 64mb Geforce 4 ? And why dont Nvidia offer support ? None at all ...

A:Nvidia Graphics card

Nvidia only supplies chipsets. Since they don't build the graphics cards, they don't support them.

I would check with the manufacturer of your video card and try the drivers from them. Usually the manufacturers tweak the drivers a little specifically for their cards.

Hi,

I read on another forum site that a Nvidia Geforce GT630 with 1GB dedicated memory is better than a Nvidia Geforce GT620 with 2GB dedicated memory. Is this true, surely more memory would be a bigger advantage than the slight speed difference between models?

Thanks,
Tom

A:Better Nvidia Graphics card

Usually higher models would perform better than their predecessors but there can be positives and negatives with both.

For example:
ZOTAC GeForce GT 620 2GB DDR3
Clock rate - 700 MHz
Shader Clock - 1400 MHz
Memory Clock - 1066 MHz
Memory Size - 2GB
Memory Interface - 64-bit
Memory Type - DDR3

ZOTAC GeForce GT 630 1GB DDR3
Core clock - 810 MHz
Shader Clock - 1620 MHz
Memory Clock - 1333 MHz
Memory Size - 1GB
Memory Interface - 128-bit
Memory Type - DDR3

1. 630 has higher Clock speeds
2. 630 has bigger Memory Interface
3. Size of memory won't have much impact unless you're using a high resolution or multiple monitors

The Nvidia install may uninstall the prior driver during the process and then reboot and complete the install.  If you have no Nvidia driver the device will operate with the Basic Widows video driver and you can update the Video Adapter in Device Manager.

xaim9x I see you're running Win10. Did the PC come preinstalled with Win10? Or, did you upgrade it from a prior OS to Win10?Also, only a very limited subset of HP laptops actually allow the replacement of processor, audio, video or WiFi "modules" and, as far as I can tell, yours is not one of these models. This means there is really no way to upgrade the video, WiFi, or processor on your laptop. You're stuck with what came with the PC.

My problem is to do with the graphics card....as the card has TV out capability, my WinDVD will not display the visuals of the movie playing..get sound no picture!

All the literature I have read on the subject, indicates that there is a conflict with the Macrovision copyright software that is part of WinDVD and this particular nVidia model card - the Geforce family 2mx/mx400 with the TV Chip CHRONTEL 7008, (WinDVD detects the TV Out on the card and wont display the visual of the DVD playing) and suggest to get the latest driver that is supposed to have addressed the conflict - Forceware v77.72 (June 2005) which is supposed to fix the macrovision copyright protection issue, unfortunately it hasnt- or somehow disable the TV out function. I cant find anywhere in the nVidia interface that lets me do that!

I have got the TVTOOL program, I have uninstalled and reinstalled various versions of the nVidia drivers. I have even downloaded a trial version of the latest WinDVD, 3+ hours later same thing!! I tried other dvd players, I have DirectX9...... nothing has worked!

So I was wondering if anyone out there has had the same or similar issue, fixed it and could tell me! lol ....it is sooo frustrating!

I have a Medion MD-1567 Pentium 4 that has SIS on board graphics. I put in a Nvidia AGP graphics card (GeForce 3 older gen) with a DVI connected widescreen Hanns-G monitor that is made for 1440x900 resolution. All works OK but I get a crazy flashing screen when I right click on any movie file that is set to view as a thumbnail, when the windows screen appears during start up, when windows desktop first comes up during start up, and also when I bring up the Nvidia control panel or display settings. This isn't the end of the world but I'd like to eliminate if possible. Does anyone think it might be related to drivers loaded for the Sis onboard graphics? I noticed there are Sis651 drivers loaded on the add and remove screen but I'm concerned they might also run the AGP port that the Nvidia driver is plugged into or perhaps control more than just on board graphics. If anyone thinks I could safely remove, please let me know. Also, any other ideas would be appreciated. I've gone as far as reloading windows cleanly, trying other Nvidia drivers but it hasn't eliminated my jumping screen.

I have an HP pavilion with an nVida Motherboard "ABM2n-LA" Win XP media edition and I just installed a Radeon HD 4670 512mb Graphics card. The graphics look great and seem to be working fine but there is no sound. Under the control panel it says no sound devices?

I uninstalled it and tried it without the HD audio drive and still no sound.
I take the card out and the sound is fine.?

Should I get an nVidia 8600 instead?

A:New Graphics card - Radeon vs nVidia

Do you have the latest drivers?

The 8600 is much worse.

I have a Lenovo z500 ideapad laptop which has a Nivdia GT 635M graphics card and an Intel (R) HD graphics 4000. Currently running Windows 10   It had recently come to my attentoin that i was getting a significantly lower FPS when gaming. upon further investigation, i realised that the games were all running using the Intel graphics and not the Nvidia. I then realised that i was unable to open the Nvidia control panel.I immediatley tried to find some solutions and as i had not updated the drivers in some time, i went to the Nvidia website to try and download the latest driver for my graphics card after i uninstalled the previous versions using DDU. and of course, the installation failed in the first step, displaying an error message saying ''The graphics driver could not find compatible hadware''. I also tried to install older versions of the driver (compatible with windows 10) but it still displays the same error message. Geforce Experience did not work and reinstallation of it failed.    'Display adapters' in device manager only shows the Intel (R) HD graphics 4000 and does not show any signs of the nvidia graphics card. i have also read in other forums that people have found their drivers under 'other devices' but this does not appear for me in device manager. It's almost as if the Nvidia graphics card never existed!!!   I finally visited the lenovo website to try and find the drivers here as i thought they may have been modified slightly for i... I really don't know where I can put this thread, so I put it here. Recently, my fan has been making a sporadic humming sound. It isn't screaming or making any loud noises, just a low and deafening hum that isn't constant but happens in irregular intervals. The funny thing is, when I turn my PC on its side, the humming from the fan stops, so it can't possibly be that the bearings are shot in the fan, can they? Like the title states I have a BFG Nvidia 9500 GT Graphics Card, and the fan has been acting pretty strange lately. I recently cleaned dust out of it but I don't recall ever touching the graphics card and fan. It looks kind of dusty but nothing too serious. I honestly don't know what's going on but after messing around with it, I have noticed it only makes the sound when it is standing straight up, and not on its side. Any insight would help dearly.

A:BFG Nvidia 9500 GT Graphics Card Fan

I would check that the fan & heatsink is securely attached to the card (I am looking at a picture showing two snap-in parts where it attaches to the board). Make sure the fan isn't touching the card below it.

I just installed a NVIDIA graphics card, and I can't play vidoes with it as when I try the computer slows way down and I have to ctrl-alt-delete to close the program playing the video.

From researching on the internet it seems it is a common problem, and one way of getting around it is to disable the 3d acceleration. Does anyone know how to do this? I tried the method that NVIDIA suggest, but to be honest I don't understand it.
"To enable or disable 3D hardware acceleration

From the NVIDIA Control Panel Select a Category... home page, select 3D Settings

Click the View menu and then select Advanced

Manage 3D Settings to open the associated page.

The options on this “advanced” page enable you to change all the image and rendering settings of your 3D applications that utilize Direct3D and OpenGL technology.

Click the Global Settings tab.

Under Settings, click the setting corresponding to the Hardware acceleration feature and select one of these options:

Single-display performance mode: If you have only one active display, this is the default setting. You can also specify this setting if you have problems with the multi-display modes.

Note: This mode is faster than either of the multi-display modes described below.

Compatibility performance mode is available if you have two or more active displays when running in nView Dualview display mode or if you are using different classes of NVIDIA GPU-based graphics cards.

When this mode is in effect, OpenG... Read more

I got a new GPU from amazon for about 30$
So I got a ZOTAC NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 2GB PCIe x16 2.0
Put it in my computer and i immediately had problems
First problem
Computer wouldn't turn on.
Kept cycling on and off repeatedly... so I turned my computer off by unplugging it.
And this time I unplugged the hard drive to see if my computer would boot without it.

worked but i noticed the bios got completely reset. so i had to manually plug the hard drive back in while the computer was on and change the bios settings to enable hard drive controller1 and some other settings like virtualization and speedstep (now it boots up fine without cycling on and off or needing the hard drive unplugged? I guess the capacitors needed to be charged for the first time and they were never primed or tested?)

A restart and windows won't boot past windows startup logo (Forgot to disable integrated graphics driver)
so i boot into safe mode and uninstall it. let it install VGA drivers
Now ive got the driver installed from the nvidia website (without the 3D vision or HDMI audio drivers and other things i wont be using)

i installed PhysX though
but now I get random display driver crashes IF DWM/AERO is turned on (i made a seperate partition and never had any crashes on a windows XP 64-install

It crashes and successfully recovers.. Sometimes its when opening a game. right clicking my desktop to bring up context menu. or opening a new tab. pausing a youtube video. Playing a really long youtube video.

recently upgraded my pc from windows vista 32 bit to a windows 7 32 bit. Problem is that my graphics card (nvidia geforce 9800gtx)keeps stopping and i get an error thats says" Display driver stopped responding and has stopped Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 257.33 stopped responding and has successfully recovered" I usually get this error or i get the blue screen of death keep in mind this never happen when i had vista so i know it is windows 7. Also the driver is the latest driver from nvidia/ Can someone tell me how to fix it because I do not want to go back to vista and spent $120 on windows 7.

A:Windows 7/ nvidia graphics card

Also i Found this solution from Larry D. Lawerence but the problem is that windows have a preconfigure driver for my nvidia 9800gtx graphics card so everytime i uninstall the drive/restart my pc it automatically installs the driver
1. Control Panel=>Windows Update=>Change Settings=>"Download updates but let me choose whether to install them".
2. Download the latest driver for your card from the nvidia website.
3. Go to Device Manager, select your display adaptor, and uninstall it, choose to also delete drivers when prompted.
4. Reboot computer into safe mode by pressing f8 when the computer boots, when prompted to install new display driver choose "never install a driver for this device"
5. Navigate to c:\windows\system32\drivers\ and rename the file nvlddmkm.sys to nvlddmkm_old.sys. Take note of the date of this file
6. Navigate to c:\windows\system32 and rename any other file of the same date as nvlddmkm.sys which begins with the letters 'nv'
For example:
nvcplui.exe becomes nvcplui_old.exe
nvd3dumx.dll becomes nvd3dumx_old.exe
etc..etc..etc..Repeat for all files with the same date as the file you found in step 5, they begin with the letters 'nv'
If it is too tedious to rename all the files, you can simply move them to a different folder.

6a. For 64bit Vista / 7, repeat step 6 in c:\windows\sysWOW64
7. Reboot to normal Windows, if prompted again to inst... Read more

Hey, I've been looking for a good but not overpriced graphics card for my new computer, which frankly has a terrible card which comes with it. I was wondering if the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti was any good, the most graphically intensive game I will be running on it is Skyrim.

So do you think it's good, and if so which graphics level (Low, Medium, High, Very High) do you think I'd be able to run it on?

Thanks,
-G

P.S:
Here are my current system specs.

Intel Core i5 3330 @ 3.00GHz
Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit
6.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 788MHz

Problem: I went from a Radeon 8500 all in wonder to a Nvidia 6800 graphics card. I uninstalled all the Radeon's drivers, hooked up the asus nvidia card, then was forced to run in 4bit mode untill i forced a driver install. I had to download the driver pack off the website.

Graphically when i play games such as oblivian and wow i get the every few minute stop then resume. And the icon in the task bar, every time i click on it my monitor goes in/out for a second. Like it is reseting something everytime.(this is the same thing if i were to change the resolution where the monitor goes black for a min.

In games i used to be able to tab out to pop up IE explorer and search while i could watch my game still run, now the game runs but when i am tab out the games all freeze on 1 frame and i have to go back to the game in order to see any movement.

I did not have nay of these problems with my radeon but now it do..

any ideas?

I scanned for hardware changes and got this aswell:

Please check this page and check your model number again.

Is it actually one of these showing up instead?

Hey,

I think my newly bought NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS graphics card is faulty. Is there any signs or ways to test whether it is or not.

The reason I think it's faulty is because I had a pretty messed up PC about two weeks after installing it. I eventually had to reinstall the old card (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200) and do a full system recovery (reverting back to the factory setup). Without the 7600 everything seems to be working as it should.

Any ideas?

I have a nVidia GeForce MX 4000 (I know, its cheap). This is'nt really a problem, more of an annoyance, but here it goes.. Using the Nvidia card, the 3d graphics in games, etc... are much faster. But when doing basic tasks, such as email, web surfing...stuff like that, the 2d graphics are much slower than when using the Integrated Graphics (ATI Radeon Xpress 200).
any help appreciated..

I recently made a new build with the follow:

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz quad core
Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB)
MSI P67A-G45 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67
Win 7 Home Premium OEM sp1

Ok so you know what i got, and the MSI Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 graphics card drivers will not work with my system. I think that it is Win 7 cause if i install it in my old desktop it works like a dream and it is running Win XP SP3, and there is no problems at all and I just completed a duel boot with a second hard drive on above system and running xp on it as well and it works fine with it. Any ideas how to make it work? If need more info just post

A:MSI Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 graphics card

I assume you are using the Windows 7 driver and not the XP driver on it,

NVIDIA DRIVERS 280.26 WHQL

might be better to go with the one previous as I haven't been seeing much in the way of good reports on the latest,

NVIDIA DRIVERS 275.33 WHQL

Also is this an untouched windows disk, or has it been modified in some way?

hi all, i have a NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE graphics card, i bought it recently cuz my old one broke, i think somebody took it out and played around with it and basically damaged it but anyway i bought this new graphics card just a short while ago and it's working fine on my PC. The thing is sometimes when i play games there's a glitch, it's not the games problem because this problem happened to most of the games that i played and it didn't happen be4 on my previous graphics card so the glitch is not produced from the games. The glitch is produced from the graphics card, i can't exactly describe wat the glitch is but when i play the games and when the "GLITCH" happens, u can easily see that some parts of the objects are gone, e.g. there was this time when i was playing Need For Speed Underground and some parts of the car are gone, like a hole or something in it and basically u don't see the whole object or background, also sometimes there's this line that shouldn't be in the background or in the game, like u can see lines everywhere and it's just messed up basically, the colours are the same but just parts of the objects are missing and the whole background is screwed up. I've updated the drivers already and i tried taking out the graphics card and putting it back in the slot and it didnt work, this problem doesn't happen all the time but sometimes it does. Also sometimes when i play MMORPG games, i log out and log ... Read more
