I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You already did what I would suuggest, except that I would press the power button a couple of times with the main and coin-cell batteries disconnected and I would wait 15 seconds before plugging them back in. Other than that, it sounds like a more serious (motherboard) issue. Some of the 20A7 machines are still under warranty. Did you check?

Hi, During my visit to US in January and February 2014 I purchased the X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (Type 20A7). I got back to south Brazil where I live, it worked fine until October 2014. Suddenly the X1 Carbon didn't boot anymore and the backlight keyboard keep flickering. I realized it was a known issue and several customers had the motherboard replaced or even the equipment replaced.  I planned to reach the US customer service in a future visit to the US but I could not travel to the US from that time, so I tryed to reach the Lenovo customer service in Brazil and check with them to pay for the service and parts replacement so I could have my X1 Carbon working again. I called and told the problem, they said it was possible to fix and they would send me a budget proposal in 4 work days. The customer service took about two weeks to get back to me and surprisingly the budget I received was of U$ 3,650.00 which is the cost of a new X1 Carbon in Brazil ( I paid U$ 2,180.00 in the US for the top version). I am very upset with Lenovo, I lost all the confidence I had to the brand. My only hope is that a senior executive of US Lenovo headquarter would take this matter and help me get my machine fixed or replaced, even for a reasonable value as I could not use it since October 2014.I really do not have much hope that this will help, I am sure it would be different if I have had the opoortunity to get back to the US just after the problem arose but it is so sad, I was ve... Took my X1 Carbon on vacation with me in Thailand.  Used it once.  Tried to boot it the following morning and a message about something missing - in courier font without a screen driver.  Now it will not boot even into just the bios.   Press the power, and the power button lights up, the keyboard function selection is active and can be toggled through, the keyboard can backlight, but nothing else.  Then a short time later it shuts down on its own.  I have tried powering it on and using a paper clip to press the reset button.  Any ideas?

Hello I have a Gen 2 X1 Carbon which is attached to the OneLink pro docking station. The docking station has two Eizo CG 243W 24 inch screens attached. Unfortunately, sinve about a month (and about two months out of warranty...), the system sort of freezes after it's been used for a few hours. The freeze looks such that the principal monitor goes black. The system still reacts to mouse movement, but not to keyboard input (ctrl-alt-del). I checked the various windows logs and cannot find anything wrong. I am suning Windows 10 (pre creators update). Anybody have an idea what this could be caused by, any help greatly appreciated! regardsChris

I always suggest running a memory test first, although on this machine, memory cannot be replaced.

Look in the event log and see if a device is throwing an error.

I apologize if this is buried somewhere on the forum. I searched for hours, really, but could not find anything exactly relating to this. After months of "Upgrade to Windows 10" pop ups I finally did it. On Windows 7 I was able to change my battery capacity to 100% before I left for a business trip then change it back when I returned home. Now I can't find where to do that and it won't charge above 46%. I've tried downloading the Lenovo Power Manager as one post suggested but it doens't have the seperate "Power" menu item as the instructions displayed. I've tried uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery as another post suggested but that didn't help either.I have this option after upgrading my Ultrabook Yoga 2 to Windows 10. The Enegery Manager remained loaded. I simply want the same control over my battery on my X1 as I have on my Yoga. Can anyone help me?Thanking all of you in advance,Clare

My X1 Carbon was working fine, but one day the sound just stopped working.  I restored my image back to the Windows 8 stock image, and still not sound.  I tried re-installing Windows 7 from scratch, still no sound. I called into Lenovo, as the machine is only 4 months old.   The support rep said that they would do a "courtesy onsite visit exception" since this was my first warranty claim and that a lenovo tech would call me to arrange to have the machine looked at and the part swapped.  Apparently Lenovo only includes depot (ship your computer away) warranty support if you want their factory service. After waiting a week without hearing from anyone, I called back into the helpdesk with my ticket reference number.   The guy i was speaking to this time said that there were no notes on the ticket that i gave him and that the call was closed.  He also said that Lenovo no longer gives the "first time courtesy onsite exception" and that I would have to ship the machine back and be without a computer for 2 weeks! Good job lenovo.  You rock.  My first and last Lenovo.   Dell knows how to "DO" enterprise.  These guys do not.

A:X1 Carbon 20A7 No Sound through speakers

In Belgium it took 5 days to pick up my machine, repair it and get it back. But 2 weeks is still reasonable for a repair at the depot. This will require a motherboard swap. It is possible you maybe accidentally bent the connector on the inside. I once had this exact same problem on a different laptop. It happens.

This issue has been afecting me for some time, but as the warranty is coming closer to expire I decided to look into it. Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (at least that I noticed) my TrackPoint has stopped working. I checked the Lenovo assistant and all drivers are updated. Googled some solutions (like checking the setup screeen) and nothing was effective. The Mouse Control Panel shows the TrackPoint options greyed: http://i.imgur.com/yudv9WE.jpg  Before I go through the annoyance of calling the Lenovo/IBM support, is there any known solution for this? Thanks.

Hi, I have a 2nd gen X1 Carbon (Type 20A7) that I bought about 3 years ago. I bought it configured with a 256GB SSD, but I'm quickly running out of space and would like to upgrade the drive. I have a few questions about this: I believe this generation of the X1 Carbon came with a max SSD size of 256GB, but does the system/motherboard, etc. support larger sizes? Is there a limit? I'm aiming for either 512 GB, or possibly 1 TB.Will the size of a new drive I choose impact speed/performance in any way?Lenovo doesn't seem to sell a 512 GB drive or larger drive for this system. Can I use a non-Lenovo one (i.e. bought from Newegg, Amazon, etc.)? I searched around on the Lenovo forums and it sounds like it's a stanard M.2 drive in the 2nd gen X1 Carbon, so should I be fine as long as I get an M.2 drive?M.2 drives have a few different connector types: B, M, and B+M. Does anyone know which connector type I need to get for the 2nd gen X1 Carbon?I'm planning on cloning my current drive onto the new larger one. What kind of adaptors, etc. would I need to do this? Also, I've never cloned a drive before so please excuse me if this is a dumb question, but are there any issues cloning a smaller drive to a larger drive (i.e. the system only recognizing 256GB on the new larger drive)?Any other things I should keep in mind? Thanks in advance!

A:X1 Carbon Gen 2 (Type 20A7) SSD Upgrade

Lenovo lists 512GB drives as available, but there is no motherboard limit.  On that model, you need one that is described as SATA-3 (not NVMe) and size 2280.  Drives have B + M Key.  Not Lenovo drives should work, but I always suggest checking the seller's return policy in case of problems.

Several of our 2nd gen/20A7 carbons have lost their circular rubber feet on the bottom. All the units are less than a year old but Lenovo has told me that this wouldn't be covered under the warranty. Not a big deal, but I'm having an impossible time finding the feet to buy on my own. They aren't listed on any of Lenovo's part lists for the X1 and I've only seen feet for the X220/230 units on 3rd party sites. I'm hoping someone on the boards here is familiar with the part. Thanks

Lenovo did end up shipping me replacement feet under warranty, which was a very nice surprise. If anyone has a similar issue and runs across this thread, the part number for the replacement rubber feet kit is HT096. As of writing this I wasn't able to find any references to that number other than on the paperwork with the shipment, but it may just be a new PN.

Prior to this problem the machine was running fine, there were no major updates that I recall, I certainly did not do any firmware updates for example, probably only Windows 10 automatic updates. So when this first happened there was a blue screen. The first few times it started booting windows and blue screened before reaching the login screen - now I can't even get the screen to come on, not even bios, just the following.. When I press the power button the keyboard backlighting and LCD Fn keys appear. The screen does not appear to start. Sometimes the machine stays like this for about a minute then switch off, sometimes it seems to reboot endlessly. When it is rebooting the power button flashes 3 times. I have tried the following with no success:Running on AC and no AC.Charging for a day.Letting the machine sit for at least a week off the charger.Holding the power button for 3, 10, 20, 30 seconds, etc..Pressing the power button multiple times.Pressing the reset button with a paperclip.Pressing the F1, F12, delete keys immediately on powerup, etc..  Any suggestions? I haven't opened it up yet, but I am comfortable doing that.

Dear community, I have this rather special issue that I would like to ask for your assistance with. The case: I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon 2nd generation (20A7) running Windows 10 x64. One day, the touchpad stopped working, but initially by making the cursor jump around the screen when I used the touchpad and later with no response at all. Currently, neither the touchpad or the trackpoint work and only when combining all of my effort and luck (emphasis on the latter) I can get a response. For instance, I recently had luck reinstalling the UltraNav driver which made the touchpad respond, though rather "patchy", but only until I restarted the computer. The background: I bought the laptop while living the United States but have since moved to Denmark where I cannot use what remains of my warranty. I tried calling the Lenovo callcenter and an employee suggested that I enabled the touchpad in the BIOS and reinstalled the driver, but when that did not work, he fell short on advice. It seems that those guys are primarily there to help old people create a password and what not. The twist: I am aware that one excellent possible solution to my issue is that I can do a clean install of Windows on my device. However, I currently have a limited use version of some very expensive software installed and I need that in my daily work and cannot get a new version right away, so doing that would set me back quite a lot.&nbs... Hello and welcome,

It seems that you're leaning toward a software rather than a hardware problem.  You might try booting a live Linux USB flash drive to verify that the hardware works.

It's typical for ThinkPads to have international warrantees.  Have you verified your specific coverage?   SUPPORT above, then International Services in the Warranty and Repair drop-down.

If your machine is eligible for local warranty service they will probably reinstall the OS as a diagnostic - and possible repair - effort.  If you can isolate to a hardware issue as suggested above you might avoid that step.

Z.

Hi Llan,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that Bluetooth in your Lenovo ThinkPad X1 carbon is frequently getting disconnected.

Try unchecking "Allowing the computer to turn off this device to save power" in Device Manager->Bluetooth Radios->ThinkPad Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate->Properties->Power Management.

Try checking with replacing the new battery in the keyboard and mouse.

Hope this helps!

The Thinkpad referenced above is equipped with a HDMI interface. During a test to directly connect a LCD projector or an external LCD display or a TV via an HDMI cable, I found that no picture appeared neither on the projected screen nor the display not the TV (the external screens stay black). Trying to connect via a ?Lenovo HDMI to VGA Monitor Adapter? and using a VGA cable resulted in the same (at least on the projector). What was done:On the X1, expand or change screens via Win+P  --> external projector, display or TV remain black (do not seem to receive a proper signal) while the X1 seems to recognize that an external display is connected (it correctly identifies the external screen in the screen settings). The X1 is on the latest patching level (according to Lenovo System Update), all drivers installed. Patching the latest Intel Graphics 5000 driver did not work (it says its a vendor specific driver).Even a dedicated installation of the external display driver on the X1 did not help or change anything.I also tried different HDMI cables, no change. I am lost of further ideas. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks,TonySt

I'm trying to install Trend Micro End Point Encryption on a T series as well as an X1 in our enterprise.  My personal laptop is a T460p and installed with no error.  However, for these other laptops I receive the following error.  The install performs a system check prior to install.  It fails at Windows MBR "Drives with alternative preboot software, such as other encryption programs, are not supported."   Since I'm the I.T. Desktop Administrator for the company, I've personally set up all desktops in our environment.  This laptop is a couple years old, was taken out of the box, turned on joined to our domain.  There is no pre-boot software installed on this machine.  It has to be something pre-loading from Lenovo that's stopping the install.   This is also Trend Micro's Endpoint Encryption 6.0 which supports MBR drives.  I've also disabled the fingerprint reader as well as Secure Boot.

After pushing the button multiple times (there isn't a magic number of times but generally it's 10-15 times) it will kick on. Once it is on there doesn't not appear to be any issues. It will even sleep and come back on without a fush. If you try to restart it however it will simply shutdown and not reboot. My gut says it is the system board but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Firstly Hello everyone, and sorry if this has been asked / solved before... I couldn't find the search option for the forum (its early, my brain is still sleeping). I have issues with getting the X1 Carbon to PXE boot, I have it connected to the network via the Lenovo USB / Ethernet adaptor, and when I press F12 the LAN option is there. This is where the problems start. One you press enter to boot via NIC the screen goes black and the text ">>Start PXE over IPv4" is displayed, this lasts for about 30 / 40 seconds before exiting back to the boot menu. It never boots through to Ghost. I have double checked that I have the TFTP server, PXE server and Ghostcast Server running correctly (and has been tested using a Vaio). Has anyone else seen this issue? Fixed this issue? Thanks for reading, and any help would be greatly appreciated

I hope I think I know

A:X1 Carbon PXE Boot Issues

I'm having the same issue only with SCCM.  All other models work properly.  When I PXE boot the Carbon with the USB Ethernet adapter, it doesn't recognize the adapter.  I've added the 2 NIC drivers to the boot image.  Is there something else that needs to be done? Thanks for any assistance.

Just created a recovery drive on a dual tip USB 3.1 and Type C thumb drive on my x1 Carbon Gen 5.  It will boot the recovery drive from  the 3.1 slot but not the Type C slot. It is not recognized on boot up from the Type C tip.  Is this by design?  If so it is a design shortcoming.  Can it be fixed with future firmwhare or is a circuity thing?

The correct USB device is displayed as a boot option, but when I select it, the screen goes blank for a brief second and then comes right back to the 'choose boot device' menu. I also double-checked the BIOS to make sure it wasn't in the exclusion list. It is not excluded. I have used this same exact USB on other machines and have been able to boot to the live OS from it just fine. For whatever reason it won't boot on my Carbon X1.  Any ideas on how I might resolve this? thanks in advance!
