Windows unable to configure wireless connection

Q: Windows unable to configure wireless connection

Windows XP Home Ed. My Dell laptop computer loses this setting and I have to reset it each time I start the computer. It looks like this may be because the "Apply" button is dimmed in the Wirelss Zero Config. Properties Window so that I can only click "OK". Have any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: Windows unable to configure wireless connection

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am at a hotel and was connected with no problem to the wireless. I wasn't getting a good connection however, so I closed that connection out and tried to connect to another one.

Now, when I click on Connect To and Wireless Connections - I get the message that "Windows Cannot Configure This Wireless Connection"

I am now connected through an ethernet cord but am unable to find any wireless connections and i know they are there and my Boingo screen keeps popping up saying I have a connection by my wireless is not detecting it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I recently had comcast install the internet at my apt and I installed and configured a Linksys WRT110 wireless router to the network.

My Mac powerbook found the SSID I setup immediately and connected just fine. It also stayed connected with good speeds.

The problem is with my pc laptop. I installed the Linksys router software on the pc and after I did that it would not connect nor detect the network. Also when I go to view available wireless networks, it says "Windows Cannot Configure this Wireless Connection."

So I removed the Linksys software and still had the same problem. I can start wireless zero configuration through the servies and check the box that says, "Use Windows to configure wireless connection," but when I reboot, it loses those settings and I have to manually check the boxes again. Even when I manually connect the connection is intermittent on the pc while it's not on the mac. Any ideas on how to get windows to automatically recongize the network and connect everytime it boots up?

I'm running XP on a Dell desktop and have been using a secure wireless connection from a neighbor's modem. My computer would show several wireless networks available until a few weeks ago and now only shows the "Windows Cannot Configure..." message. However, it is connected wirelessly right now to another neighbor's unprotected wireless.
I have gone through the procedure to check the box on the Wireless Networks page to "Have Windows Control" the wireless, but the box is unchecked the next time I go to it.
The only thing I did recently was to download Picasa, that could have been the last I did before this condition.
Thanks

I currently have a Desktop computer (IBM - Pentium 1.6 GHz Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2) connected directly to my Linksys WRT300N Wireless N-Router to allow me access to the internet. About a year ago I purchased a laptop computer (Dell Inspiron 16400 1.6 GHz Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2) and easily created a network by connecting it wirelessly to the router.

However, after a few months of the laptop wirelessly accessing the internet flawlessly, I now see in the Network Connections screen that my wireless connection (Dell Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card) is not connected. When I go to the Wireless Network Connection screen to choose a wireless network, I receive the message "Windows cannot configure this wireless connection. If you have enabled another program to manage the wireless connection, use that software".

Within my Device Manager I have 3 listed network adapters: 1394 Net Adapter, Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller, and the Dell Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card. The status of all of the adapters were checked and all are working properly. Furthermore, I connected the laptop directly to router to see if that would enable me to access the internet, which it did. In addition, I have the Wireless Zero Configuration disabled.

I have read online that others are having the same problem. All indications point to having 2 programs installed to wirelessly connect to the internet, which is causing the problem. Can anyone c... Read more

I have an Asus wireless WL-520GU that I have a wired connection to my PC. Why, because I am using the wireless only to allow access to my webradio.

Problem is the web radio connects 50% of time. Other times to connect I need to manually configure on webradio to connect to connect to wireless. It works sometimes other times not. I haven't been be to get to point of securing the SSID. So probalby someone is stealing my bandwith.

Now to explain my setup, my modem is connected to my Linksys 2102 adapter (used for VOIP) which to connected to the Lan port on the router.

I can surf the web on the PC, but trying to establish a connection, the PC does not recognize a wireless device. I cannot even access the Asus web interface (192.168.1.1)

My default gateway is 192.168.0.1 that of the Linksys adapter,

How to enable SSID so I can lock it and I can access the wireless problem-free from the web radio (Aluratek) ?

I have this one computer in my house that uses a Motorola wireless adapter to connect to an 802.11g network through a router. However, recently, the computer acted up. I reformatted it, and reinstalled the adapter software. However, i cannot access its control panel to configure any options. This i have no explanation for. I have no option to make windows use its own controls instead of the software's because i have no connection (see next paragraph).

On top of that, Windows (SP2) is not letting me configure a wireless connection. I press setup a wireless connection and enter the SSID (named Wireless) but it doesn't do anything. I have no options to configure which networks to connect to. For example, in the wireless connection box, it will not let me choose preferred networks because it says there is no connection.

In the network connections window, all i have is 1394 connection and local area connection (disconnected). No wireless connection, no matter how many times i set one up.

What i don't know is if this is a problem related to the adapter or windows. I would think it is the adapter since i just reformatted windows to factory conditions, and the problem persisted.

Thanks very much.

As you can see by my title I'm having a little problem connecting my Mac (running on windows) to a wireless WPA-PSK AES config. I'm new to mac (bought it Dec 2008) and I'm not quite sure what to do (even though it's running on windows it's different to my old T49 IBM Thinkpad hardware wise). When I try to connect it just stays there trying to connect and then the window just dissapears after 60 seconds or so. I've checked the Key, it's correct and I've clicked 'Changed Advanced Settings' and faffed around using the same conenctions and configurations, but it isn't working, sometimes the settings don't save properly even though I've clicked 'Ok' twice. What's happening, why isn't it saving and what's the solution? My dad says it's missing something surely (Been in IT 15 years, doesn't know himself =\). When I tried to follow the instructions on the microsoft site,

What if anything can I do

Unfortunately I can't connect the computer to the internet without the wireless as I'm out of town, typing this in now at a library computer, which right now is my only occasional access to the internet until I get this straightened out.

Chances are that when you installed the Netgear driver and utility you told the utility that you wanted it to manage the wireless. Its icon should be in the Notification Area--double click on it, go to the Network (I'm going from memory here) tab, find the network you want and connect to it.

Hello all.

My Dell Inspiron 3520 was going quite slow for unknown reasons so I decided to 'refresh' it using Windows advanced start-up setting. Since that time I have been unable to install Windows updates. Well, I can 'install' them, but they won't 'configure'. Once installed and 'configured' 100% I get this error message advising following reboot : "Failure to configure updates. Reverting changes". The laptop then stays paralysed on that screen.

This only started to happen AFTER I "refreshed" my laptop, which was running Windows 8.1 pretty-much problem-free, though a bit slowly, until a week ago. For now I have found a temporary 'fix' by disabling automatic updates; otherwise the laptop is constantly stuck on the "failure to configure updates" error page (because, obviously, it's automatically attempting to install updates). I have done all the standard troubleshooting, including running MS Fix It, Dell Dr ('My Dell' found no hardware issues), MS Malware removal and Mcafee anti-malware. All reported "no issues". I have been in command prompt and found no issues I even tried to 'refresh' the laptop again two more times. I have also spoken to two Windows "technicians" and allowed one of them to remotely access my laptop. He found no issues or "violations".

Obviously, the temporary 'fix' of turning off auto-updates isn't a long term solution, and 'refreshing' the laptop hasn't helped (it actual... Read more

Hello everyone,

I'm about at my wit's end trying to figure out my problem and finally decided I should ask the pros for help, since an exhaustive search of the interwebs has turned up nothing. I'm a hobby PC user so please be patient with me. So here is my problem.

I recently bought all the stuff to build an HTPC/gaming rig for my girlfriend and I and I wanted to set up RAID 1 but no matter what I try, I can't get it to work. Here is my rig.

ASRock H77 Pro4-M mobo
Intel i7-2600
(2) 2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm; 6.0GB/s HDD
(4) 2GB G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR 1600 RAM
EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti Video Card
Cooler Master 600W Silent Power supply

I think that's about it.

Here is what I've done.

I went into bios and set my storage configuration to RAID. After, I saved and exited, and allowed the machine to reboot. When it did, I pushed Ctrl + I to enter the RAID volume setup menu. I labeled the volume, chose RAID 1, selected my drives, selected my size, and saved and exited. Then I booted from my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (Dell OEM, if that matters). I selected my regional settings, and when prompted, accepted the terms and selected "Custom" install. At the drive select screen, I saw one disk, which I believe is what I should see. I highlighted the drive and selected "Load Drivers." I used the driver labeled with the arrow in the attatched image. I got it from my mobo's website found here ASRock > Products > H77 Pro4-M. After the driver loaded, I re... Read more

A:Unable to configure RAID on Windows 7 Home Premium

Why do you want RAID? WIn7 doesn't much like RAID which isn't even Redundant so risks losing both HD's if one fails. Better to install to one HD and use the other for backing up an image.

If you saw one correctly-sized RAID array when you booted into the installer to try hardware RAID then the driver wasn't needed as it's only loaded when no drive shows up. Try again.

Hi,

How do I keep 'Use windows to configure my wireless network settings' checked?

I have a wireless home network (kids computers plus my laptop) but my main desktop was wired. A couple of days ago I fitted a wireless card to the PC and now, every time I start the computer, there is no connection. What I have to do every time is check the box against 'Use windows to configure my wireless network settings'. Once this is OK'ed then the computer connects. The next time I start the computer the box has unchecked itself and I have to check it again.

As a point of interest, Wireless Zero Configuration is set to auto and is running.

I have an older machine, 1Ghz Athlon, with 2 GB of ram on it.
This is a secondary machine, not meant to have any beautiful graphics or anything on it, just to run a few small services.

I installed XP and Vista on it (not at the same time) and am encountering the same issue on each OS - I can't maintain a wireless connection using a USB wireless card.

I've tried 2 of them that I have - a Zyxel b/g card and a iBlitzz b card.

The connection shows that it's there, but it's like the cards have gone to sleep.

I've turned off all power management to USB, but the problem still keeps happening.

The link lights on the devices show they are connected - but nothing happens when I try to access the network.

I am thinking that the issue would be that the PC has only 2 USB 1.0 ports, and I am using one of those for a USB mouse. Perhaps the other port doesn't have enough juice to maintain good connectivity?

The adapters aren't the problem. I can hook them up to my main PC and have no issues, with the receiver portion sitting in literally the same place.

The longest I can keep a connection is maybe an hour.

Any ideas?

Hey guys,

I found a problem with my Wireless Zero Config starting up as Stopped even though it's set to Automatic. To fix, I have to go into Services.msc and start it, then open the connection's properties and check "Use Windows to Configure my Wireless Network Settings".

This is annoying.

In my research this morning, I've fixed the first issue by simply making a .bat file with "sc start wzcsvc" and putting a shortcut to it in the Startup folder. My hours of research have not turned up anything on making a similar fix for the connection properties changing back to Windows configuring. I have looked through the programs and found none that control connections, though I believe there had been some in the past such as RealTek. With those uninstalled, I either need some way to force it to stay on Use Windows or at LEAST a command to open the connection properties window, reducing the steps to get it checked back.

Thanks,
Rhyr

Get the service tag from the bottom of your laptop (7 digit code) and go here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/ProductSelector

Enter your service tag and then select your operating system. The wireless driver should be under network drivers. If you give me the service tag and operating system + type 32bit or 64bit, I can send you to the exact page.

You have a Linksys WRT54G I suspect..?
Are you able to browse the net on your computer which is connected with ethernet and just not on your laptop which is connected wirelessly?

Try turning all security on your router off and broadcast the ssid and then turn ur firewalls off and see if that does anything.. if not, unplug ur router for 15 secs and restart your laptop and then reconnect.

If you are facing the slow connection issue, you can check the reason for the problem. If the connection drop issue is due to your ISP, you can contact your ISP. If you discover any issue from your side, you can check the router and the associated hardware. If you have issues with your Ethernet cables, you can replace them.

A:Now (after years OK) unable to get wireless internet connection

Because nothing is connecting to the internet you need to reset the router, turning it off may not be enough to get it working although shutting off the router for ten minutes may work. After that you may need to go into the routers set up page and make sure every is set up correctly, set DNS address, set to use DHCP and so on, depends on the default settings of the router.

I own a acer aspire 5633wlmi laptop which I recently had to re-boot with only a windows xp cd as the reboot disk i got with the laptop did not work, since doing this i have been unable to detect drivers i.e. sound card etc and on installing driver detective i have been unable to do a system scan to re-detect as i have no internet connection.

Further more on trying to establish an internet connection both wireless/not i am unable to do so as on entering ssid and network key i am told that there is not enough letters in the network key.

Finally i am unable to find the cd which came with the internet box so it has got to be a wireless connection, would be very appreciative for any help...

Ok so I downloaded NordVPN on my HP laptop a while back. Well I bought a new wireless printer but for whatever reason my laptop wouldn't print anything. My girlfriends and daughters laptop prints without issues. Well after messing around with it for a
while I noticed that the connection showed the printer was offline and I couldn't get my laptop to register it as online so I can use it. Again the other computers in the house worked flawlessly. Well I opened up NordVPN one day and I had a pop-up on my computer
say the printer was online. I attempted to print something and was successful. But as soon as I disconnect off of the VPN servise it goes back to offline and will not print. I tested it out multiple times by starting up the VPN and each time it would print
whatever I needed. But would always stop as soon as the VPN was closed and not being used. I re-downloaded all the software with no luck. I did what I could to adjust the settings with no luck. Well my subscription expired and I deleted NordVPN. I was able
to print off one page but then that was it and now it will not print at all again. I am able to scan documents with the printer and it shows up on my computer, so I know its connected and recognizes it, but it just wont work. The laptop is an HP running windows
10 and the printer is a HP envy 5055. Any help would be appreciated.

Have not had this problem before always been able to connect.

Does that mean she has broadband internet access and is using a D-Link wireless router?

Do you mean that you detect other wireless networks, but not your daughter's? If so, maybe she has the SSID broadcast disabled.

Greetings everyone!

Please Help Me...This is getting frustrating for me.

My laptop runs on windows XP and the wireless connection through my router shows excellent strength. When I do Ipconfig /all in command prompt, it gives me a valid IP address. I see the same problem when use an ethernet cable.

However, when I try to open any website either it doesn't open or it takes a very-very long time to open.

It used to work before so I surmise some setting got messed up and I have no clue what that is...

Thanks in advance for your help

I'm in over my head, as I'm not a techie.

On my Acer TravelMate 2480, I reformatted it and reinstalled Windows XP. There is not wireless icon. I went to the Acer webpage and downloaded the drivers I guessed I might need.

When I try to update drivers on the Acer, and choose my flash drive stick, the computer doesn't see any drivers on the flash drive.

I will probably end up having to pay to have the whole thing redone the right way, but was wondering if anyone might be able to offer some help.

Thanks.

This is the first time I've posted a problem so you need to be gentle with me if I do it wrong! We have been given a Gateway 400SD4 with a 1394 net adapter. We have a Belkin 54g high speed wireless g router connected to a Dell PC. We access the internet using this wireless connection it works fine with my Apple Mac book pro, my nephew and sister in law both use it with their laptops - no problems, works great all over the house. But this new Gateway laptop just will not connect ! Does it need another 'something'? I thought the net adapter was all it needed or am I being really stupid!?

A:unable to connect to internet on laptop using wireless connection

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

It has been acting up big time in the last couple days. The speed (Mbps) fluncuates up and down, and constantly disconnects me. I have tried resetting the modem, but it will still do it after some time. I have the newest filmware. Why did it just start acting up now?

It has got to be the placement of the router. I have it in its own room on the same floor as my laptop, but its on a desk about 3 ft high. Perhaps on the ceiling?

I'm using a belkin modem + wireless router. When the wireless connection speed is 54mbps,i can surf the web.But it often drops to 24mbps and sometimes even 1mbps.When it does this,i cant surf the web.Every time this happens i need to repair my connection. After that I would be able to surf for a few minutes. Then the speed drops again.I'd have to repeat the same thing over and over again. And my pc which is connected via ethernet connection directly to the modem/router works just fine.

When i called belkin's tech support they asked me to change from WPA to WEP.After i did this the problem became worse. My laptop cant even connect to the router.I dont know whether it's the router or the dsl connection.Bcoz i've used linksys and netgear before and the same problem occurred back then but not as frequent as now.

So can anyone help me with this problem??

Unable to connect to network with either a wireless or hardwire connection.

I do not use this computer very often. It is the one used by my kids to play "Club Penguin", etc.

I was away at scout camp with my oldest boy and when I got back, the internet did not work. It appears that several other "System" resources are not working either.

I did IPCONFIG /ALL and nothing is connected.

I tried to ping the router and got no response. "Transmit failed"

I tried to go to restore and that failed as well.

I went to the store and picked up a new usb wireless card and that did not work either. I feel confident that the issue is NOT the wireless card. I attached a screen shot of the IPCONFIG /ALL screen.

I am having a challenge to figure out how to fix this.

Please help.

Hello,

About a week ago at my parents house, my wireless internet stopped working. The status says "limited or no connectivity" and when I attempt to repair the network it tells me "unable to renew ip address."

At first I thought maybe there was a problem with the home router, but the internet on the other computers in the house were working fine. Then I came back to my house and its the same thing: the internet on all of my roommate's computers is working fine, but mine is still having thte same problem.

Can anyone help?

Hi everyone. I'm having a problem with my laptop, I used to be able to share my internet when I created a wireless ad-hoc network. (I used this network to connect my mobile phone via WIFI and use my laptop's internet on the phone) Unfortunately I've only manage to do that the first 2 days, after that when I try to create a ad-hoc wireless network, it doesn't show the option "Internet Sharing" any more.
I had to make it work again, so I've restored the PC to a previous date. And it worked, but only for the first 2 days again.
Does anybody have a clue why the "Internet Sharing" option disappears from the network creation manager, after a while????
Thanks in advance.
