I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have Vista Home Basic and I guess it did not come with the software to burn DVD;s???? What is recommended to get this done?

A:vista home basic -burning dvd's?

Hi eucker!! I'm bhahar

So, you have a Vista Home Basic without the burning software on it, am I right? Actually you can burn the disc (whether its a cd or dvd) on your computer without any software at all. Here's the article on how to do it from microsoft: Burn a CD or DVD

If you want more options, such as customize speed or type of cd/dvd you want to burn, you can choose any popular cd/dvd burning software such as Nero or Roxio. There's a lot more cd/dvd burning software which you can try to google up

Hope this helps

Hey all,
I just figured I'd let you know this. For anybody here who owns a server, either for live hosting, development, testing, or anything, and you don't want to pay for a corporate edition of your antivirus (which usually includes paying for a bunch of licenses that go unused since earlier generations won't change solutions), GFI has brought you to safety with their allowance of their Vipre Home Edition to work on a server (something I believe every vender should be doing, since not every network, even in the corporate world, has everything micromanaged). The only difference (according to Nick Hallin of GFI,), is that the enterprise editions include builtin templates for server recommended exclusions, but if your network is small enough, and all users are allowed to manage their own updates, patches, and antivirus updates, don't bother with that, and set up the exclusions yourself. Much cheaper. By the way, has anyone here ever used Vipre? I have a demo on my server at home, and I'm thinking of buying two licenses, one for my laptop as well. But is it worth prematurely terminating my NOD32 licenses in favor of GFI? Especially because it's partly that I'm a little disappointed in Eset for not keeping their reputation of being known as being one of the most accessible antivirus solutions for blind folken to use? But the bigger reason is that they require the lowest corporate license for servers, which is five users, and I really don't ... Read more

Hi, can someone help you pls?

I have been using Norman internet security software for just over a year. Last week, I decided to purchase the AVG internet security software (2-year license) at a retail shop to replace Norman, which had just expired in its 1-year license.

I tried to uninstall Norman before installing AVG from "Control Panel->Unstall a program" and it stated the status as "Successful". However the Norman sub-folder is still in the "Program File" folder. So I deleted the Norman sub-folder manually.

Now, when I tried to install AVG, it detected that my laptop is still installed with Norman AV and recommended that I uninstall it before proceeding with the installation. I went to check Microsoft Internet Security Center and found that it still states that the alert for Norman malware is still active.

How can I do a clean uninstall from Microsoft Security Center before I go ahead with installing the AVG software? I am totally frustrated with this and my laptop is currently not being protected.

Any suggestions or help is appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Hi there
I couldn't find a specfic forum for this question, so sorry but it had to go here!

I am running an 8-channel DVR card for a shop's security and it works fine for the most part. However I'm having troubles with the remote view through IE (via ActiveX controls) It works fine from any XP machine and it seems from Vista Home, but not from a Vista Ultimate machine (and I've tried from both 32 and 64bit versions) - The conection is fine, IE brings up the same interface, but the video images do not appear.

The manufacturer can't (or won't) help me out with this (as from his point of view it works fine as he has a Vista Home machine that can login pefectly) so I was thinking there must be someone who might have an idea of something I need to tweak.

I've tried turning off all the fancy Aero stuff, different graphics modes and resolutions, to no avail. I've tried disabling firewalls also.

Does anyone have any idea where I might start tweaking next? I could understand if I couldn't get it working from a Vista machine full stop, but considering it works from any XP machine, and from a Vista Home machine, there must be something I'm missing!

Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone recommend backup software that has ease of use but not too expensive? I have 3 computers and I am mainly worried about hard drive crashes and lost digital pictures. A little background first. I have 2 networked computers (ethernet) upstairs and 1 wireless laptop downstairs. - All networked together. My son uses one of the upstairs computers--- E-machine with XP Home the other my daughter uses upstairs which is Windows 98. Both have various digital pics that I would hate to lose. (also would hate the hassle of trying to get up and running again after a disaster such as a drive crash or failure.) I have a Dell inspirion laptop with XP home and various other digital pics networked wirelessly. I have read about Acronis True Image ver. 9 and Genie Backup Manager. Both seem very good. Also what hardware would anyone recommend for backup? USB external drive? DVD writable drive on one computer? --------backing up all 3 computers using Network shares?? I am leaning toward Acronis because it appears I could restore a drive image easily without haveing to mess with installing Windows. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all,
got a friend of a friend that has an ancient pc with windows 98 on it who wants me to fit a cd burner. He's a die hard win 98 fan who refuses to upgrade and its been such a long time since i used an operating system that's soooooo old. He's gonna want nero or something similar, but i have no idea if the newest versions of cd burning software still support win 98. Its taken 3 months to get him to upgrade his 90watt power supply for example (personally i think its a waste of time with such and old and slow pc but each to their own i suppose).

So does anyone out there know what burning software version i should put on the pc? All help will be appreciated.

A:What cd burning software works with win98?

Was it that hard to go and see the Nero webpage about the system requirements?

All Nero versions support Win98. Since the PC is old, I'd suggest Nero 5.x or 6, 7 is way too bloated.

I have recently purchased a new Acer Aspire 5535 laptop. It has Windows Vista Home Premium (WVHP) installed.

The computer came with a number of programs that I am not interested in having on my system. In addition, I was not provided a restore disc. I do own a copy of Windows Vista Home Basic (WVHB).

I would like to keep WVHP as I appear to be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 7 . . . but I would like to reinstall to get rid of all these worthless programs. Can I use a WVHB disc with my new WVHP product key?

Could I install WVHB with the WVHB product key, then use the WVHP key supplied by Acer to upgrade?

I'm looking at a new Dell laptop for my wife to use. Her real interest is in having a webcam so she'll be able to see her new grandchild using Skype or similar. It will also be used for basic internet surfing.

The basic computer I'm pricing comes with Vista Home Basic but the Dell rep is telling me I should have Home Premium since it will be used with a webcam. I have a feeling I'm getting a sales pitch since we'll never use the computer for any advanced video producing and such. Do I need the Premium for an additional $30 or is the Basic sufficient?

Here are the basics of what the computer will have in case that helps:

Inspiron 1525
Intel? Pentium? Dual Core T2390 (1.86GHz/533Mhz FSB/1MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista? Home Basic Edition SP1
Glossy, widescreen 15.4 inch display (1280x800)
3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
Size: 250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
CD / DVD Writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Mini-Card
Webcam Option
6 cell battery
High Definition Audio 2.0

Thanks for your help. Terry

A:Vista Home Basic or Home Premium?

I know of no reason why you would need Premium to support a webcam I think he may be spinning you a tale.

Check out this link to see the differences

The premium version will give you a better visual experience but I dont think it will make a difference in video as a better Graphics card would do.

But for your extra $30 you will get Windows media support and the overall visual look of the software if far better but this is not a neccesity

Buy Basic!

I have had transparency working twice with an aero msstyle file and/or a theme file but each time I needed to install WindowBlinds for it to work. After which I uninstalled WB and enjoyed the aero experience. So WindowBlinds automatically turns it on somehow. Due to their trial limitations I can't keep installing every time to kick start aero and it's a bit extravagant to pay for especially when my computer is capable without it. I need to know how to turn it on manually.

I've patched the system 32 files. Set the windows color scheme to Windows Vista Standard. I've enabled desktop composition via setting for best appearance. In the regedit DMV key I've set composition to 1, compostion policy to 2 and colorizationopaqueblend to 0, 1 and 2 (opinions on which # works differs so I tried all three) and it's still not worky. Does anyone know anything else that controls transparency? Of course Microsoft has generously disabled the transparency control in "Window Color and Appearance" on Vista Home Basic so that is not an option.

I would just use VistaGlazz but have never been able to run it on this computer. It crashes every time I open it.

My son has an identical problem. Interesting that Micro$oft choose not to involve themselves with questions of this nature. Too difficult I guess. My son's laptop is a brand new Dell with Vista home and M$ Office. We purchased Vista Business but the upgrade dies with a ""Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation" error message.

I noted there are dozens of similar problems on the web but M$ is strangely quiet about this problem andthere appears to be no solution.

Micro$oft are prepared to take the cash for the upgrade but not provide the support...

A:Problems upgrading from Vista Home Basic to Vista Business

Are you doing an 'upgrade' installation? Try 'Clean' install, if you are.

Just bought a new desktop from Dell that was pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Basic, later wanted to upgrade to Windows Vista Business, so I bought the Windows Vista Business separately from the retail store and try to install it.

But halfway during the upgrade installation, an error message popped up and says that some files are corrupted or something, with error 0X80070017, and the upgrade was cancelled.

I have tried many times which included doing a clean install or installing during boot time, all lead to the same error.

The copy of Windows Vista that I bought was a genuine copy and the hardware should meet all requirements, it's a Pentium D 915, 1 GB RAM with 160GB HDD.

Can anyone please help? I need to get the desktop upgraded to Vista Business by this week.

A:updating from Vista Basic to Vista Home Premium....Issues. Please Help

Have you tried booting up from the disk and doing a startup repair?
If that's not the case, something must've gone wrong in the installation.
