New HD setup issue in Compaq 5304

Q: New HD setup issue in Compaq 5304

Hello everyone.

I have a working Compaq 5304 single drive system. I just tried to replace the 2G drive with a 8G drive (I don't have the cable to add the additional drive as a slave... not shops open at 12:30am. for me to go and buy one). So, I decided to replace the original drive. Went into CMOS settings (this stumped me until I found the answer on-line) but didn't see any HD information. Hmmmm.....

Pulled the new drive out and checked for jumpers. No jumpers for a single drive setup. Checked the original drive to compare and no jumpers. Put the original drive and went back into CMOS. No HD info. Booted the system into OS and no problems.

I have checked Compaq's site and no luck. I am stuck. BIOS doesn't show any HD info for me to change or setup/detect a new drive.

I don't know where to go from here.

Preferred Solution: New HD setup issue in Compaq 5304

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hmm system recovery. I'm not too big on using that. My overall suggestion would be go into dos at the startup and do a simpe C:/ format or is it the other way doh... Anyways at startup of windows press oh F8 I believe for systems with win 98 or higher but if you got win95 its either f5 or f8 or you can make a boot disk and do it that way.

I recently reformatted my friends Compaq Presario 5304 becasue the person he bought it from had an admin password onit he didn't know and he wanted a fresh install oif 98SE on it anyway. I tried downloading all of the drivers for his machine from the Compag/HP website and I can not get his modem to work with the driver Compaq provides. I assume it is the original modem that came with the machine cause I can not find a manufacturer on the modem card. The only thing outside of FCC regulations stuff on the cards sticker is a Model Number 1456VQH-T2 and Mexico MDMASI499-179 SCT. Does anyone have an idea of any other place where I can get the drivers for this modem, especially if this isn't a Compaq Modem? Thanks in advance

If you mean when you plug in the system it pw ON, that is either a pw supply failure or a mb failure OR [very] remote chance of a failed switch/wiring. Usually the switch does not fail however anything can break. To test, swap in a known good pw supply. Given the age of that system, it is not worth putting much money into repairing. If the pw supply fixes the problem, great. If not, it [your system] is not worth installing a new mb. With big box systems, you either purchase the board from the mfg [prohibitively expensive] OR you attempt to install a standard board into the hp case; sometimes that works and sometimes it does not. Big box systems are proprietary ie the case, board, etc are made to HPs specs NOT industry standard specs. In addition, if you install a different mb, you need a new copy of windows, you cannot use the oem version of windows.

One other item, win7 ultimate did not come on this system. It came with vista. How did win7 ultimate get installed?

I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 laptop. It completely stopped working a while ago, and when I tried to reboot it using the CD I had issues, and gave up on the laptop for months. I am now trying to make it work again, and unfortunately I do not remember the specifics as to what exactly I did the first time around.

However, when I try to start it, it tries to boot XP and then flashes to a blue screen, where it says "Setup is being restarted." Soon after, I am shown a message saying "Please instert the Compact Disk labeled 'Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD' into your CD-ROM drive.

I have my one and only Windows XP cd already in, and after clicking Ok am told "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Sercie Pack 3 CD is needed."

I have a Compaq Presario 1200-XL106 laptop, but don't have the original SETUP and DIAGNOSTICS floppies. The HDD was replaced and doesn't have the SETUP or DIAGNOSTICS on it, so I'm unable to access the BIOS on startup. However, I still have the original HD. I'm told that images of the SETUP and DIAGNOSTICS floppies reside in a 4 Mb partition on the original HD.

I'd like to re-install the original HD and copy what's needed to a flash drive or floppies. My question is: how do I find those files?

Plan B would be to get copies of the floppies, but -- to no surprise -- the Compaq website is no help. Any suggestions of another source from which I can download those diskettes?

Thanks for any help offered.

A:SETUP and DIAGNOSTICS floppies for Compaq

helpseeker: If, by Setup, you mean BIOS, it is not on your HDD. It resides on a chip on the motherboard. It is usually accessed by repeatedly pressing the delete key or F2 at startup. Be careful what you do in the BIOS, you could screw up the machine.

I recently bought a Compaq V2030US notebook. I bought it off ebay. WHen i bought it it had an issue with system booting from LAN and was giving PXE E51 error which i fixed easily by disabl it in BIOS and also change the boot order. but the issue that i am having now is weird.

I am trying to install windows XP Professional service pack 2 on the hard drive. Now let me go back a little bit. I tested 2 hard drives (HDD 1 - Good, HDD 2 - Has a password block according to my DELL CPx). Now i tried to install XP on HDD 1 it starts of fine. Says Starting windows and then BAM!!! shuts down. same with HDD 2. starting windows from the disc and BAM!!! again...shuts down. I have a feelings that it could be the caddy connector. but i am not sure. again it could be a bad IDE borad|cable. Please advise guys. Before i start taking the system apart i want to know the easy ways. any help would be much appreciated. thanks

A:Compaq v2000 series shuts down during windows XP setup

May be a faulty HardDrive partition

Here is Delpart http://www.juliatexas.com/delpart/Delpart.exe
I've used it many times for stubborn partitions removal
Here's some info on it: http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/DELpart.htm

May be faulty Ram

Here is Memtest ISO, to create a bootable Memtest CD.
Run memtest at least 7 times for a thorough test.

May be CPU

A faulty internal processor, can cause this error.
As many users tend to overclock CPU's (and Ram) Your first choice would be to load Bios defaults (or Optimized Defaults) in CMOS. But a hardware fault on your CPU means it will need to be replaced (this can be a little hard to explain presently.

Can be devices attached to your computer

Mainly USB and modem devices can cause issues with installing Windows
Either unplug them (actually any not needed device) or disable them in CMOS

It's a bit grey at this point. Without more info on error messages or anything else
ie can be HardDrive or even the CD you're using !
Just try the above first

I have to go wireless with my Compaq CQ5814 PC. I currently use an older USB wireless adaptor Linksys WUSBG54GSC ver 2 and I am using Vista drivers (XP and Vista are all that are supported), which seems to work fine. This computer had issues when I got it and had to have the MB replaced. The problem I have is when booting up the computer it hangs at the black Windows 7 pulsating logo screen. Sometimes it will stay there for over a minute then boot but more often then not it will start windows startup repair. I have talked with HP Tech support which suggested unpluging all the USB componites, the wireless adaptor is the only one. I unpluged it after shut down and when rebooting the computer did not hang (USB adaptor still unpluged). Is this a Driver problem or USB hardware problem? I suspect a USB hardware problem because I have used this adaptor on several windows 7 computers from several manufactures without experiancing this problem. I am thinking of replacing the adaptor with either a newer USB or an internal PCI-E wireless adaptor but I do not want too if I am going to have the same problems. I want to get this issue taken care of before my warrenty runs out.

Hello all,

My 92-year-old grandfather -- who lives on a little island off the coast of Maine -- has emailed me regarding a problem that he is having with his ten-year old computer. If anyone out there would be kind enough to offer some advice on how to fix it, it would be greatly appreciated. There are no computer shops on the island, but my grandfather has plenty of tools and has worked extensively with radios throughout his life, so with some direction I have little doubt that he can make the repair.

This is an unconventional post, to be sure, and I don't really know anything about his computer ... but I think he has done a reasonable job describing the issue:

Hi Chris!
I have a severe computer trouble that I brought on myself.
First I will describe the computer and it's programs.
It is a Compaq, Presario 1200,
at least 10 yrs old.
Along the front edge of the top it has three indicator lights at the
left of center and three on the right.

The ones on the left are operating lights of which one shows when
the charger is in and the left most one shows when the computer is
started up by the button which is in front of the screen.
The one between these two shows the operating conditions, I believe,
as it usually flickers in concert with whatever is going on.
The three on the right each has a "locked padlock" symbol.
For programs it has Windows 98, Juno V.4, Intel Create and Share
and some other good things.
Everything has been working good.

I purchased a Compaq presario V3617LA laptop a couple of months ago which is running Windows Vista. Here is the problem I have been having:

It frequently freezes for several seconds and then shuts off. This seems to happen when it is attempting to load a web site with many images, though it often happens when only one or two applications are open as well. It is as if only a few MB of the 1024 MB are functioning.

I have run the hard drive diagnostic test, memory test, and did a system reinstallation as well with no success.

That is my main problem. Another minor question... how does one disable the function where touching the touch pad is equivalent to a left mouse click?

Thanks so much for any assistance.

Hey there,

I have a Compaq model CQ61-313US, S/N CNF9418B8P. Made in '05.

Wasn't 100% if this was the section to post an inquiry like this, but I'm having a problem starting it up. When I turn it on, the screen stays black and the Caps Lock light and also the light next to "Altec Lansing" both blink together once every 3 seconds.

This problem started happening fairly recently, and to remedy it I'd take the battery out and unplug it, then start it with one or the other power sources inserted back in. Typically I never turn the computer off, I'll just close the lid. But occasionally it wouldn't start back up upon opening. Today marks the first day I cannot get it to start up no matter what I do. I've replaced the CR2032 battery on one of the circuit boards thinking it may be causing it. I'm not sure what to do next, and I dread taking it to Best Buy, as they will surely laugh at my 11 y/o dinosaur.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there,

I have a Compaq Presario SR5113WM. The past couple days there is an issue of having to press the power button multiple times before it powers on and boots. Does this sound like a power supply issue? If so, does anyone know of any tutorials for a DIY solution?

A:Compaq powering up issue

It sounds like a power supply problem, or it could involve the start/stop motherboard circuitry.

If you have a power supply tester that is the easiest way to test a power supply. If not, you can test the output on each lead with a calibrated digital multimeter.

If you don't have a power supply tester, it's far easier just to take your tower to a shop and have the power supply tested. If the power supply tests good then they could jump a known good power supply to the motherboard to see if the problem is on the board.

I have people bring towers in for these tests quite often. Just to test the power supply is $10 and to test the power supply and the board $25. If you take your tower to a shop ask them beforehand and make sure their power supply tests the response time for the power good signal.

I did find this though

Run and save Version 2.40A or later of the System Configuration Utility (reboot
between each run) and verify that the embedded SCSI Controller is identified as
"Compaq Wide-Ultra SCSI Controller," instead of "PCI SCSI Controller." If not,
run the Utility again.

I am unsure as to where else i could post this issue i am having.

I purchased a Compaq Presario 1500 3 years ago, and about a year ago, the laptop turned itself off mid-use and has not turned back on since.

I have tried a new power supply, the power supply gives off a high pitched Beeping (yes, from the power supply) when i plug it into the laptop. Lap top still does not turn on.

I would love to just donate this laptop to the local community college, for their class to repair, and be able to use, however, there are doccuments I would like to retrieve from the hard drive first.

My questions are:
Is there any idea as to why the laptop shut itself off?
Is there a way to easily troubleshoot and repair it myself?
Is there a way to put the hard drive into another computer and retrieve those doccuments?

Any assistance is appreciated.

Edit added: The computers I have access to if the hard drive can be moved is a Dell laptop, and two home built machines.

A:Compaq laptop issue

The power supply beeping would suggest that there is a short somewhere inside the laptop, a dead battery perhaps? Have you tried running the thing without the battery pack?

Whether you can repair the thing yourself, depends on the exact fault and your electronics skills

Yes, there are adapters that let you connect notebook hard drives to normal IDE cables. Also, you can buy external hard drive enclosures that accept notebook drives.

This is my second battery I have purchased for my evo notebook. When I slide the battery in and plug the ac adapter in, the battery LED indicator will just flash. Compaq's tech support says that it should be a steady light when charging but says nothing about what it means when the light just flashes. I bought the first battery about a month ago from eBay and it didnt work. So i went out and bought an OEM battery and that didnt work either. The system won't power on unless the ac adapter is plugged in. If I unplug the ac adapter while the system is on, I will get about 2 minutes of battery time. But even then, if I go under POWER SETTINGS in the control panel, it still is reading ON AC POWER. So, i dont think its the batteries. Is it a hardware issue, driver issue, software issue? Is there some sort of configuration in windows XP that i am skipping? Appreciate the help.

A CLEAR pic of the motherboard front panel header is needed. Some OEM proprietary boards use a standard Intel front panel header (2x5 pins with pin #10 missing) and others use a 2x8, 2x9 or 2x10 header. Generally, the pins are marked on the board.

Also, what are the markings on the front panel connectors? Is the Power LED (generally marked PLED or PWR LED) connector a 1x3 or 1x2 connector?

Hello all ...

I have had a Compaq iPaq 3636 since about 2000 and it has worked and still works perfectly, having required only one battery change in all that time. Of course it is a bit out-of-date, but its Contacts and Calendar is so much easier to use than my iPhone I have stuck with it.

However, I recently did a stupid thing: I allowed the iPaq battery to go completely flat without realising it. So when I reconnected it to my PC it restarted, but it's Partnership Name changed to WINDOWSMOBILE94, and a new partnership ("kas's device 2") was created. It was previously called Pocket_PC and its Partnership Name was also Pocket_PC.

I was able to get my 12 years of Contact data back without a problem - it seemed to contained within the iPaq memory. And my documents and spreadsheets had been recently backed up so they weren't a problem either.

However, I cannot now get my Calendar of Appointments back onto my iPaq from my Exchange Server (via Outlook is what happens, I think), and nor can I synchronise my Contacts with the Exchange Server either. All this had worked perfectly for years and years.

I thionk that the problems are to do with the fact that I cannot change the iPaq settings back to "Pocket_PC" so that I can reconnect to the original partnership - if I try to do so it immediately reverts to WINDOWMOBILE94, and then connects to the new "kas's device 2" partnership, which won't engage with my Exchange Server.

I am having an issue with a friends computer that I am currently working on. She ran the Compaq System Recovery that came with her PC. During the recovery she said it told her that her files would be safe and would not get removed. I searched up and down the computer and could not find any of her important documents and photos... the weird thing is that her computer is showing the hard drive is 160GB but it is still using up 42GB of that. I changed the folder options to view all hidden files and folders and system files, I calculated how much hard drive space all visible files and folders were taking up and it just didn't add up. I did notice that there was one folder in the C:\ drive that would not open... "Access Denied" and there was another partition (D:\) that was for the system recovery but would not let me view anything inside that partition. I will have to post the name of that "access denied" folder later bc I'm not in front of that PC at this time. Any ideas to where Compaq System Recovery might store those files? Or any other suggestions?

Hey, I have a Compaq Presario C300EA

I dis-assembled it to clean it (The dust and such) I have now re-assembled it and I now have a problem!

What I did was I took the Heatsink off and blew through it and then put it back on, I also took the power cord out and re-sat the connector. I took the Hard Disk out too and put it back after.

The problem is now, when I turn it on. It goes to post screen (Normal fans) then after when it loads windows it will get about 5 seconds in to loading windows and the fans will turn on up to full and the laptop will shut down.

I have had an overheating issue with this laptop (Hence cleaning it out regularly) but it's never done this.... Any ideas?

I have already re-sat the heat sink several times, im now leaving it overnight with no power at all to see if it will re-set it's self

A:Compaq Presario C300EA Issue

Sounds like the hard drive might be having a issue, whether the power isn't sufficient to it (bad re-seating) or it has a bad connection to the MB. I came to this conclusion since after the initial post the MB (BIOS) says "operating system, your are the captain of this computer now". Assuming none of the files in Windows got corrupted, must be a bad connection one way or another. Also, when you re-sat the heatsink, did you clean and re-apply thermal grease each time? If you didn't that could be the root of your overheating problem.

The message says"this computer is connected to VirginMobile MiFi2200 4DC Secure but does not have access to the internet.- If you are connecting to a wireless hotspot you might need to open a web browser to finish connecting."
After speaking to Virgin for 4 hours over the last 2 days, and spending 2-1/2 hours with the Geek Squad today, I am back to square one. Anyone else have this problem, or better yet, have any suggestions??

First suggestion is that you will have better luck getting help with your own thread instead of tacked onto a Solved one. I've started one for you here.

Please show for both PCs ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Ok guys, this one has me hung up and I would appreciate some help. A user brought me their Compaq CQ61-420US laptop that they purchased from a pawn shop. At first the PC wouldn't even turn on. I ended up having to replace the power cord and a new battery and also had to replace the motherboard fan because it was not spinning and causing the PC to overheat. After I got the hardware part fixed I found that the PC had a lot of malware. I ran a scan and cleaned the PC up completely.

Now when I try to start the PC sometimes the PC will boot just fine and other times The PC just starts up but there is a black screen and the CAPS LOCK AND SCROLL LOCK lights flash. After I completely drain the battery and recharge it then it will fire back up normally. I've also tried different RAM but the issue still persists. I'm thinking this may be a motherboard issue but wanted to post on here and get some of your opinions.

Thanks for any input!

A:Issue with Compaq CQ61-420US

The Compaq Presario CQ61-420US (WA976UA#ABA) laptop originally came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Because that laptop was purchased at a pawn shop and contained the programs and debris and issues from its previous owner, it needs to be wiped out and given a fresh start.

The factory restore recovery disc kit for it can be purchased here.

I recently inherited a little Presario 900 (laptop, of course). The little beauty works great, except at startup. I'll press the power button and the power LED will light up (HD-light flashes sometimes.), and there's a sound from what I think are the speakers, but nothing happens after that. So I'll hold down the power button to shut it down again, and repeat the above process several times. Whether its on battery or AC doesn't change anything, but I find it helps to leave it "on" for half a minute and then shut down and power up again, but even that works irregularly. Eventually, after a few minutes of this trial-and-error, the HD will spin up and the whole system works fine ever after... until it's shut down or hibernating.

Does this sound familiar? It isn't a really pressing issue; I get along with it as is, but if there's something wrong I'd like to see about fixing it, as well as ridding myself of the inconvenience. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

A:Compaq Presario 900 bootup issue

I have the exact same issue with my Presario 900.

It intermittently won't startup, the speakers click briefly, the screen stays dark and the Compaq logo won't display. If I shut it down and re-start it enough times it will eventually come back up.

Mine will also seize up just sitting there. Usually though, it happens if I move the laptop although I can't seem to find any definitive movement that always makes it seize.

I stripped the entire unit down and then re-installed everything. While I was there I cleaned up any grounds that I could find. The idea was that hopefully the issue would be solved by reconnecting and tightening everything.

When I re-started it it worked quite well for about a day. I was hopeful that it was fixed but it started doing it again :-(

I know these laptops have issues with the power cord jack but in this case mine's fine and I can't see that being the reason for the seizing. I'm quite certain it's a mainboard issue, probably caused by the case flexing when moved and thereby flexing the mainboard. I seem to recall running into a laptop repair person on the 'net some years ago that mentioned this was a common issue and that he could fix it. Regrettably he went off-line and hasn't been heard from since.

I know it's not the processor, the memory, the fans or any other common issue. I'm pretty certain it's mainboard flexing somehow/somewhere even though it occurs even when it... Read more

I have a Compaq Presario 5000. I would like to add a second hard drive. There is an available 3.5" drive bay available, but the hard drive will not fit into the metal sleeve that is installed in the drive bay. I don't have a large bay available, and I would need some sort of an adapter to go that route, in any case. The 3.5" drive bay is exactly where I need it to access the drive cables, etc., so I would much prefer to do it that way, if possible.

I've checked with HP/Compaq and Radio Shack and it appears that this is just the way it is. The Radio Shack service center suggested that I rig the drive in as best (using ties!) as I can while the Compaq service person was under the impression that the metal cage holding the primary hard drive had enough room to handle a second drive (not that I can see).

It doesn't make sense to me that this problem would not have been widely encountered and resolved. Does anyone know, for example, of a modified bay sleeve that I can purchase? Any insight would be appreciated.

Are you looking at the bay from the outside or actually with the cover off?? I'm not at all familiar with the Presario but you MAY be able to remove the whole "sleeve" from the actual mounting brackets; then again maybe not....just a thought

Compaq Presario SR1265SCL Restore issue. When I try to take the PC into the F10 restore I get the error: STOP: c0000221 unknown Error \systemRoot\system\ntdll.dll. Can anybody tell me if the restore partition is damaged?

A:Compaq Presario SR1265SCL Restore issue.

Your best bet is go to hp.com, click on support and drivers. Then order the restore disks. This will do the same thing and repair the restore partition. The disks will cost between 15 and 20 dollars.

I recently just reinstalled windows and all of the drivers. One of the drivers requested to flash my BIOS. In the middle of flashing my computer turned off. When I turned it back on nothing will load. All I see is the load screen where it says press F12, F10, or ESC. Does anyone know what happened, and how to fix?

Thank you,

hi, i have an old compaq laptop running windows vista. just yesterday i was using it and i had to reboot it.. well when it booted back up and i signed in to my administrator acct..the screen turned to a solid yellow color. i can't see anything else on the screen besides the yellow. but when i sign into my kids acct, i can see the screen just fine. before all this happened, i was trying to uninstall the program called INTERNET DOWNLOAD MANAGER, which apparently had a bad key. i was trying to follow a youtube tutorial on removing the key from the .REG, and afterwards, i started having this problem. what could be causing this and how do i fix it.

A:yellow screen issue on compaq laptop

I'd try doing a system restore to see if that fixes it. Sounds like an issue with the registry entries you changed.

Ive only had this computer since october. I upgraded to 8.1 about 1 month after it came out. I did notice after this that my computer didn't always boot first time - but no real problems - but on friday it loaded a blank desktop - that saturday refused to load at all - and I had to do a reset. After the upgrade to 8.1 failed - it got stuck on 'protecting your files' - Yet another reset. I was thinking Hardware - but since running on plain win 8 its been fine...

Any thought ?

I purchased a new HP 6000 Pro AIO a year or so ago.  Standard memory was 2 gig.  Has been upraded from W7 Pro to W10 Pro.  Recently I decided to upgrade to 2x4 Gig Memory Modules. They installed fine - and the machine is working well and much faster.   However, the System Info and Task Manager both Show Installed RAM as 8.0gig with only 3.44 Gig Useable. I'm probably not getting all the memory resources I should be.  Can anyone advise what I can to to increase the useable RAM. Thanks

My friend called me up the one day and said her computer was giving a "fan broken error", and dropped it off today. When I opened the case I seen a lot of dust under the fan and inbetween the heat sink of the processor (AMD). I walked away briefly and my roomate decided to detach the fan, heat sink and processor (all one piece). I was quite upset because I simply just wanted to remove the fan on the top and clean all the dust and leave the processor in its place. I know some processors require a bit of strength to put back in, this one is a AMD athlon 64 processor 3800+. The only thing i did was put it back into the socket, lock it in place and continue to clean the fan and heat sink out. When I was finished cleaning everything out (mind you i had my wristband on to avoid electrical shock to anything) i plugged it all in and turned it on. the monitor says "no input signal.....going to sleep". now the computer runs, all the fans are running, HD runs, and im think the processor is running but not sure how to find out for sure. Im in IT right now and in the process of finishing a built computer so i know a bit about them. I'm thinking it could be the video card which is built into the motherboard. I just dont want to order a new motherboard if it could be something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
