New laptop, trouble xferring files/settings from working Win7 laptop

Q: New laptop, trouble xferring files/settings from working Win7 laptop

I recently purchased an ASUS A555DG-EHFX to take over for my wife's Win7 ASUS K50IJ-BBZ5 (both are 64-bit).

Obviously getting Windows 10 up and running out of the box was a breeze. Configuring WLAN connectivity was also easy, even though I have a hidden SSID and access control on devices on the router. Even getting Office up and running was fine - just uninstalled from the old computer, downloaded an installer file from Microsoft, using the product key, and that was fine.

The one hiccup has been getting my files and configuration settings (such as browser history and passwords and cookies) from the old computer to the new.

I have read that one can run Windows Easy Transfer on a Win7 machine, which I did (to an external HD), then copy the migwiz and migration folders from the system32 subfolder of the Win7 machine, to somewhere on the new machine, and run the migwiz.exe program from the migwiz folder.

This appeared to "know what it was doing" - it identified the user profiles captured in the transfer data, and allowed me to select which ones to transfer.

But when the process completed, I can't find any of the files from the Win7 laptop, and I can't see any of the profiles and configurations - the files themselves, or evidence that the computer is accessing them.

Also, the old laptop had a C/D HD partition, as does this, and it was pretty much program files on C and data (.docx and .xlsx files, etc.) on the D partition.

After running migwiz, the new computer still has 0 usage of D.

Without buying or using new software, what's the easiest way to rectify this? I'll happily manually copy folders from the old Win7 to the new Win10, as long as I know where they're supposed to go. It would be great though if the "run migwiz.exe" advice worked as well for me as it has for many who've recommended the approach.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can't for the life of me figure out how to share files between my Win7 desktop PC and my Win7 wireless laptop. both machines have network discovery turned on, file and print sharing turned on and public sharing folder turned on. I set a few folders to be shared yet I can't seem to access any files from either machine.

When I try to access the laptop from my Desktop pc using the Network link in an Explorer window I get a "Network Error" window which reads "Windows cannot access \\(laptop name). Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve the network problems, click diagnose".

Here is something that is odd. I can share and access files from my Win7 desktop PC to my WinXP desktop PC and vice versa but my Win7 desktop PC and Win7 wireless laptop refused to share files between each other.

Hey.

I was wondering if it was possible to transfer the files/settings from my PC to my laptop, i.e. I would basically like to copy the exact profile I have on my PC to my laptop.

My PC is HP running Windows Home Premium 32bit and my laptop is Dell running Windows Home Premium 64bit.

Cheers,

Matt.

A:Is it possible to transfer the files/settings from my PC to my laptop?

I would drag the User folder contents to external and then import them by opening the folder, on Organize tab Select All, then drag the group to the corresponding User folder on target machine.

This avoids importing user settings (hidden AppData) files which can be a corruption path. Best to start new with fresh settings.

Some use Windows Easy Transfer but I would not mess with it as it's cumbersome and can fail. Much easier to just click and drag.

If you have the same version and want to apply a backup image to the target machine, you'd need to boot Paragon Adaptive restore CD to adjust it to the new hardware. I'd use the Acronis premium image program which comes free with any WD or Seagate HD in the mix, or free Macrium - Image your system.

First time poster at the end of my rope with this issue. I recently upgraded my laptop CPU. I used a processor that Dell had tested on my specific model of laptop (N5050) and everything was fine for about 2 weeks. I used ESD protection and didn't do much actual touching of the motherboard. About a week ago the laptop did a hard shut down for no apparent reason. There was no BSOD and when my system booted it didn't prompt me to go into safe mode. However once I got to the Windows profile screen the keyboard was not responding. The HD is new, the system is about 5 and a half years old.

The keyboard works fine through POST, Windows sees it and is not displaying any errors in device manager. I got the keyboard working again by rolling back Windows to just after I installed the new CPU. However, when I let Windows update run tonight the keyboard stopped working again. I rolled Windows back and it is still not working. I have un/reinstalled the driver as well as trying several restore points. The ribbon is firmly in the port. The keyboard is still working through POST and in BIOS but as soon as the OS begins to load it is no longer active even though device manager shows it is active. My anti-virus is not finding anything and I don't use the laptop for anything that is risky for malware (no porn, torrents, opening strange e-mail attachments, etc.).

Any ideas what to try next? I really don't want to reinstall the OS.

I'm planning to buy my first ever laptop for a four week business trip. I'll buy it with Win 7 64, like my desktop, and will copy the contents of my desktop HD to the laptop before I leave.

When I return, I'll want to sync all changed files from the laptop back to the desktop again.

I feel a bit embarrassed to ask how to do this, as it's obviously a common issue ... but I've googled, browsed these forums, leafed through my copy of Windows 7 Inside Out -- and still can't find what I need to know:

What's the easiest and most trouble-free way of syncing these files?

Should I buy an Easy Transfer cable? Use a third party program, like Foldermatch or Laplink or Syncback Pro?

I understand that I can sync files with an online intermediary -- Windows Live, I think -- but I'd just as soon not go that route. My hope is that there's a cable I can get (like the Easy Transfer cable) and some simple software I can use or download that will do the job for me.

Hi, I'm John and I'm having major problems here. I have been using a laptop for awhile and it's been working great. I have been using my pair of headphones for my laptop and they've been working great as well. However, after a bit, I noticed that the audio was not working really good. I thought it was the headphones until I tried more pairs, they did the same thing. The problem is that when I'm listening to a song, one part of the audio I can hear clearly, but the rest (the majority of the song) is either faint or muffled.

This happens when I put the headphone jack all the way in the output. When I take it out some, the majority of the song audio I can hear clearly, but the other parts I can barely hear. This really annoys me, and it really bothers me. Is their any professional or half-assed way to fix this? My headphones were loud and clear before, but now (out of nowhere) I can't hear 100% of anything I listen to. Can I get any help? I'd appreciate it greatly! This happened randomly and I'd like some answers, I have good hopes in replies!

Have you tried messing around in there at all? It should recognize where your headphones are plugged in and give you options to control them. Are you plugging into the front panel or the rear panel for audio on the headphones? Have you tried both???

I'm secretary of a local sports club and I've always saved my files using layers of sub-folders, something that XP and Win7 allowed me to do. Not so Win 10 - when I saved and then copied into Win10, most of the folders were either lost, screwed up or dumped all over the place.

Here's how I did it in Win7: (Obviously there are more folders at the top level and many more sub-folders underneath.)

My solution is to rename every sub-folder that only had a date so that eg under Agendas are now "Agenda 2015" & "Agenda 2016". This should work but the other problem I had is that some of what I saved went into This PC and others were 'taken over' by OneDrive, and I've no idea how/why.

I posted in the Microsoft Community as that seemed the sensible thing to do. One helpful insider suggested that I'd booted into the Start Screen [which doesn't allow folder hierarchies] instead of into the desktop and asked if I'd activated tablet mode (which I hadn't). But I want to end up with Folders in Documents. Another thought I'd not got used to W10's File Explore (which I haven't) and a third was a grumpy goat, picking holes. Horrid man.

At the moment I'm having to save everything to my desktop - that goes against everything I've been taught and I'm running out of space.

The way that folders work is essentially the same in windows 7 and Windows 10. It's only the start menu that is changed

How you perform your transfer depends basically on how much data is involved

Will all your data fit onto a USB stick that you have access to ?

If so ...

insert the USB stick into the system containing the windows 7 dataOpen Two windows one for the windows 7 data and one for the USBarrange/size the windows so you can see the Win7 data and at least a part of the USBdrag the Secretary folder from the Win7 Data to The USB

I suggest you use the Documents folder as the root for your data as this is the automatic starting point for applications such as Word and Excel and is automatically added to the quick list in Win 10If your data will not all fit onto the USB stick you will need to open the Documents folder on Win 10 system and manually create the folder structure to a level that you can use - e.g. split into two at the Committee / Membership level or even lower down.... Hi everyone,

Im having a total nightmare with my laptop, Ive had it for about a year and for some reason whenever I tried to download files/applications it would come up "curupt file", after a very long time trying to look for answers, i decided to save all my files and I used system restore and wiped everything off my laptop and restored the laptop to "factory settings".
After doing this I tried to download firefox and then "invalid digital signature" poped up underneath the download, so i ran the file anyway and "curupt file" appeared.
I tried downloading google chrome and the same thing happend, its happens to everything now that i try and download.

I could really do with some help on this as no one seems what I can do, also I was toled to try and download mulwarebytes, but everytime i try and download it the same things happens.

i hope someone can help me.

I would run a disk diagnostic. If you can't download a diagnostic program see if you can find one on a bootable CD that you can get somebody to burn for you. The diagnostic program will vary depending who made your hard drive. First thing to rule out is if the HD if going bad.

ive just started up my laptop and been prompted with a question of which operating system to use, 8 or 8.1, I chose 8 as that's what I thought I always used

however when I have got into the laptop and put my password in, everything has changed, for example a lot of programmes are gone including daft little games, google chrome my anti virus (ESET I think it is), my back ground has changed, none on the personalised backgrounds on there anymore. all my files such as uni work, film, music and games still appear to be there but, iTunes is also gone, sticky notes has also gone which has information which I need

is there anyway to get these back? possibily back date the system to a point when it was working and go from there?

I have a 2-year-old laptop with Windows XP SP3 as its operating system and as of today it's begun to act up and I'm not really sure why, what the problem is, or what to do about it. It began this morning when I shut the computer down. It said something about including an important Windows update upon Shut Down, which I presume it did. When I turned it back on a few minutes later it logged me onto a blank default XP desktop with all of my files gone; I have the laptop set so that it requires the username and password upon logging in and returning from standby but the login screen was bypassed when I turned it on and it took me to the new user account with nothing on it instead. I immediately rebooted it and this time it did come up with the login screen while booting up but when I entered my password it said it was incorrect...the error also included something about a "domain," but I can't remember exactly what it was. I retyped my password 5 or 6 times exactly the same way each time, checking each letter, and around the 7th try it logged me in to my account with my desktop and all my files still there and everything else as usual. I'm positive that I typed the password the same each time so I have no idea why it didn't accept it until the 7th try.

After this I used the computer for an hour or so and then closed the screen before leaving for work and when I came back home tonight and opened it up it gave me the typical login screen I get upon returning from st... Read more

BTW; this may be totally unrelated but I thought it might be worth mentioning anyway. Yesterday I was in the process of transferring photos from a SD card to my computer when my battery got low so I plugged it into the 100 watt power inverter that plugs in to the cigarette lighter outlet in my car so that the transfer could complete. I had the engine running while the car was parked and after about 20 minutes I turned it off (but left the car battery on) and this did something to the inverter that made the charger stop working other than during brief intermittent 5 second intervals when it would come back to life at random before losing power again. The laptop again warned that the battery was about to run out and even with the engine turned back on I couldn't get the charger to work and as a result the laptop went into hibernation mode in the middle of the transfer. When I eventually plugged the laptop back into a reliable outlet it loaded up to a black screen with white text that said the battery was low and press F1 to continue; I pressed F1 but nothing happened. Then I pressed other keys at random, all of which made a beeping noise when hit, but the screen stayed the same. I tried manually turning it off and back on again only to be met with this same screen which I couldn't get beyond. Finally after about 8 manual shut downs I was able to get past the screen and it booted up normally and I logged in as usual. Like I said, this could be totally unrelated but the t... Read more

Hi Everyone,

I have 2 laptops, an HP Pavilion dv7 and a Dell XPS M1530. I have a 75Mbps internet connection to my router. My HP laptop internet wireless download speed is approx. 75-85Mbps depending upon the server I need to access. My Dell can only reach a wireless internet speed of 15-20Mbps. I'm trying to bridge my HP to my Dell with cable to achieve a higher speed for the Dell. I'm having problems, can anyone give me step-by-step guidance on how to achieve this.

Help is truly appreciated,

Thanks, JP

A:Bridging between Win8 laptop and Win7 laptop

What is wrong with connecting the HP laptop to the router? You would get much better stability and latency this way.

To bridge the wired connection on the Dell laptop to the wireless connection you can create a Network Bridge that will bridge the interfaces although the results of this can be quirky and you may have issues with regards to routing since the HP laptop might need to be on a separate subnet that the router would not know how to get to.

Still, it is worth a shot.

Hope This Helps,

Hi Guys,

Have a real strange issue here...

I have an Asus X55A Laptop running windows 8 and my keyboard suddenly went crazy! It started adding random characters when typing or added spaces between each letter!

I was able to try a restart using ALT+F4 but it would then not let me type anything into my password box. I wasnt able to cursor over the on-screen keyboard function.

I eventually got logged on by using a USB keyboard and Mouse which work fine. Still getting spaces between letters when I type.

Even stranger...when I click on ANY desktop item it will simply vanish! I used msconfig to get a safe mode with networking boot. When I click on an icon then a dialog box saying 'Item Not Found' and then something about file transfer - try again or cancel. If I select cancel the icon will vanish.

Even selecting items in folders will disappear.

I am assuming this a virus and any help at all will be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Have been having this problem for a while now.

Every so often, the headhphone jack on my laptop just stops working after hours and hours of the laptop being on.

The built-in speakers of the laptop work fine. What happens is that while the computer is in use (after some random amount of time), any hardware plugged into the headphone jack of the laptop will not playback sound. This includes headphones, speakers and the like. The sound device manager in control panel shows sound being output, and if the headphones/speakers are disconnected, the audio plays fine on the built-in speakers on the laptop.

I haven't been able to figure out what exactly causes this problem. I have tried resinstalling the driver several times. I am 100% sure it isn't the headphones of the speakers that I use as I use these speakers and headphones on many other devices (phone, tablet etc.)

The only way that this issue gets fixed is if the computer is shut down and then rebooted (a restart doesn't work, the computer has to literally lose power for the problem to be fixed).

It seems very intermittent and I'm not sure how to approach this problem

Any ideas?

A:Headphone Jack on Laptop Stops Working Until Laptop is Powered Off

One idea would be a look the power plan in use. If you are running with the default Balanced power plan you may be seeing that nterfere by conserving battery power temporarily turning the audio off being a constant drain. Another thought could be a result of the onboard audio chip itself getting too warm where the hardware protection circuit will then come in and deactivate all sound. That is usually seen as far as the cpu temp as well as other major components. The audio being onboard would also be monitored by the bios not so much by Windows.

The other possible cause of losing sound would be the headphone jack or the board end having a cold solder point getting warm and expanding just enough to break the connection until cooled off. The complete shutdown of power would tend to suggest a temp or regulation issue where either the power plan or temp monitoring would have to be watched. And one more thing would be setting the laptop on a fan cooled stand or effective notebook cooling pad to draw heat away from the unit if you are not already using one. Laptops are known to get quite warm with extended use since everything is packed into a tight space with the typical serious lack of air flow unlike the usual desktop with front, rear, and side or top case fans in use if not water cooled.

You have some things to consider in the list of things there. Increased overall cooling, not planning to use the laptop for extended periods of time which can allow for something to overheat i... Read more

I have been having problems keeping my touchpad and keyboard functioning after taking my laptop apart. In the first instance, my touchpad stopped working a couple weeks after the dissection. I took the computer back apart, and re-secured the touch pad jack in the motherboard connector, and it worked again.

The second instance, which I havent been able to solve, is the keyboard keys. Certain keys will stop working after some short time after taking apart the computer, usually a couple hours to a couple days.

I have tried readjusting the keyboard jack in the motherboard connector, also have tried turning off the computer and taking out the battery for a while.

Please help

Its an HP Pavilion dv5000 with Windows XP

Hi all,

Question is as per the subject line but the reason I ask is that although each laptop is visible to the other in Devices and Printers when I try to send a file from the Vista laptop to the Win 7 laptop I get a message failure message. On the Win 7 machine when I click the the bluetooth icon in the systray the option to 'Allow a Device to connect' is greyed-out and there is no alert that a device is trying to connect. A far as I can tell the bluetooth settings on both laptops are OK, adding a device was OK with the passwork handshake completed without problem.

Is this a driver issue, settings issue, or summat else?

Couple of questions

Are you using "homegroup" for networking?

Is there no other way you can transfer like wifi (its faster)?

Old laptop is asus u45jc-a1. New laptop i bought is a sager laptop. My asus laptop has lot of problems. First off, when connected to a monitor, monitor would go to sleep or power save depending on the type of monitor. I had thought this was a monitor issue until i saw this was with several monitors so issue is my laptop. Someone mentioned its the driver but when i downloaded the driver online, computer always had black screen after installing it and i had to system restore it every time.

Besides that, there is a constant beeping sound with the laptop. If i have the laptop on for say 10 hours, iit probably beeps at least 100 times at least an hour. It would beep beep beep every few seconds. You might even hear 20 beeps in 1 minute. Sometimes it doesn't beat for 30 minutes or so but then go back on beeping. Someone said this either has to do with motherboard or ram.

First off, how would i know which is it? Also i do plan to do a clean resintall as well. Is there a chance if i do the clean reinstall, the beeping problem would go away or absolutely not?

Back to my original question though... i would like to transfer a database from old computer to the new sager one. I mainly play online poker and use this program called holdem manager that has all the hands i played and i could transfer it to the new laptop but doing a backup and restore. Thus i would have that file put it on box.com, then transfer it to the new laptop. I know many ppl who play onlin... Read more

A:Transferring Files From Old Beeping Laptop to New Laptop Question

Computer POST and beep codes are how a mobo tells you there are problems. Reinstalling will not resolve this as it is a hardware issue.

You can't transfer any hardware problems to the new PC by moving data files over so I would do it as soon as possible, and before running any further hardware tests provided in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Another way to transfer the file is to put both of the PC's on the same Homegroup and share the file to copy it via the Homegroup - Create

I have a new Toshiba Laptop (Win7 64bit CORE i3). I would like to run (via usb) and old hdd from my desktop which was 32bit Win7.
I have the old hard drive in a SATA enclosure and running it via USB to my laptop. When I attempt to either copy or read the old hard drive I get a write protect error. I have tried
the MS registry changes to remove "write protection" but the registry entry they call for is non existent in my laptop registry.
My last post on this was annotated as solved...but my explanation was weak. I do not want to run this drive as a permanent addition to my system, I just need to copy some files from the old drive to the new one.
If I attempt to use Control Panel/Disk Management it tells me the old drive is not "initialized". Both options to initialize don't work. Please help I have some very important medical records that must be copied from old hdd to new.

Hi,

I recently bought a laptop from an online auction site. The laptop is a Thinkpad T400, which has a Windows 7 Pro for Refurbished Computers COA.

Upon first reboot, I was able to activate Windows 7 with the number in the COA sticker.

The problem is that I want to install from scratch, in order to get rid of the Lenovo Recovery Partition on the HD, so I want to do a completely clean install.

My question is: Can I install using one of the Digitalriver ISO Windows 7 Pro images, and then activate it with the COA number I have? Or do I need a special Windows 7 Pro for Refurbished ISO?

As a bonus question, the Windows 7 I have is for UK (since I bought it from somebody in England). Would I be able to install Windows 7 Pro from a Digitalriver image in other language, like Spanish, or is the COA linked to a specific language?

Thank you in advance!

A:Installing Win7 Pro from scratch on laptop with Win7 Pro Refurb COA

If you already have the Digital River ISO. The downloads are no longer there. MS is going to verify the product key first, then let you download the ISO. If you already have the image, after the install if it won't activate over the internet I'm told you can call in to an automated server to get it activated.

If you search Softpedia.com you should find the article about the removal of the DR downloads, in the Desktop=>Windows section of the site.

This laptop has been owned for a few years, I'm not quite sure how many since it isn't mine. My phone was propped next to the laptop and fell on it, and the screen when dark. Tried restarting it but the screen still didn't work, this went on for around a day. Eventually when I tried to restart it, the laptop would begin to boot but shut down two or three seconds into a power up. Tried a hard reset, but it did nothing. After the hard reset the computer started, but froze on the Windows start up screen. Afterwards it still quit booting after two or three seconds. Stayed away from it for a week or so trying to figure out what was wrong with it/where I could get help. Came back to it today to try and it turned on again, but this time it stopped on the initial dark screen and now it is a black screen with green lines all around it and some blue lines. Do I need to take this laptop to a nearby technician or is all hope lost for it?

Hi,

I'm working on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop (older model) running Win98. It's stuck in a SafeMode boot loop (turn on pc, up comes safemode screen, choose any option, windows welcome screen appears briefly, system powers down, boots to safemode screen etc. etc).

It's been determined that the only way to get the files off the bad HDD is to take it out and connect it to another (working) computer. That makes sense, but I've never done this with a laptop. I happen to have another laptop here (HP Pavilion about 2 years old) that is working fine. I also have a desktop (3-4 years old) here that works fine.

What is the best method of doing this? Is there a piece of hardware I need to purchase, and if so, is it readily available and about how much does it cost? is this a complicated procedure or a relatively simple one for someone who has a good working knowledge of computers?

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated. There is a time-critical issue with this.

Thank you.

Hi so I am usually able to figure things out myself when it comes to computers just by clicking around but I need some expert help with this conundrum. My old laptop, a Lenovo Thinkpad had a weird issue once where it hid some of my files but when I called Netflix to fix my streaming the guy helped me make my files re-appear. These files and folders can be opened, edited, and played just like regular files BUT the folders appear lighter than other folders, like the manilla is more grayish than if I created a brand new folder. I didn't think this was an issue until I bought a new dell inspiron laptop this month and tried to move the files from the old computer to the new computer. Example: My document folder has 127 items, which means folders and loose word documents, plus documents within the folders. When I highlighted all the stuff in the documents folder and dragged it to my Seagate external hard drive it said that it was copying all 127 things, which included regular colored folders and the light colored folders from the hidden incident. When I tried to drag all of the folders, both regular and grayish colored folders into the dell laptop, the greyish ones did not appear on the new computer. I made sure that the external hard drive shows the hidden folders and on the old laptop if I click on the folder marked Tudors Season 3, which I bought, btw, the folder says that it is empty but when I open it the episodes are all there and can be watched through WMP. I have no id... Read more

A:Transferring formerly hidden files from old laptop to new laptop?!

They're marked hidden. It's as simple as that. All Netflix did was help you configure your old computer to display hidden files. They're still hidden. You now have to configure the new computer to show hidden files. Then I suggest you change the attributes to make them not hidden. There's no reason for files and folders you created to be marked as hidden.

Try holding the Esc key down while booting and the press F11 to run the system recovery.  If this does not work, you might have to boot from a recovery USB to restore the laptop.  If you did not create one, you can order one from HP.  If this has Windows 10 on it, you can also do a fresh install using the downloadable installation media from Microsoft.

I have looked at various Sata cables but none of them mention windows 8. Is this a problem. I also have an old pc hard drive, that i would like to get the files from but this is less important. Neither the pc or old laptop work.
