I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On my 2nd X1 extreme, the first was bricked. Everytime I boot into Windows, I experience a freeze and afterwards a black screen after some time (a minute or so). The laptop became unusable in windows. I have all the windows and vantage updates. I disabled all remote management stuff in the bios, disabled all secure boot settings, set some keyboard preferences (swap ctrl-fn etc.) and changed my graphics adapter to discrete only. I tried windows restore and after experiencing some blue screens, that helps a bit: still freezing, but not always. When I reapply all windows and vantage updates the laptop goes back to the same behaviour: boot into windows and after a minute or so a total freeze, followed by a black screen some 5 seconds later and still later fans spinning up to full speed. The updates include the latest graphics drivers, and I think the issue maybe has something to do with these graphic updates, but not sure. Some more observations:- The laptop never froze when Windows was applying updates. This takes longer then the usual time to have it freeze.- During updating the laptop, when I logged into windows, I sometimes got a windows notification saying the gfx driver failed to start and windows is reverting to a generic driver. I can't remember exactly, but I think the laptop never froze when using the generic one. I run the machine in dual boot and on linux the behaviour is absent. It does have sleep issues in Linux where it also freezes when coming out of slee... Read more

I have been having a long running problem with my computer. It started out as a lack of internet access which turned out tI o be a bad virus. I fixed that problem by doing a complete reformat of my system. I thought that that would fix the problem and it did for a bit.

After a week or so I started having BSOD. I went to a computer shop and we went to work on the issue. The BSOD's were showing that there was an error with my sata connection. I replaced the cables. The problem kept happening, so I replaced the motherboard and hard drive with a complete reformat again. Then I continued to have the same issues which included crashes, disappearing icons, weird error messages (x86 errors) and once in a while a BSOD. The BSOD's all say there's still an error with the sata connection.

I then decided to replace the power supply and upgraded to an evga 1300 watt. I replaced my case as well to a bigger one. I even replaced the ram sticks That seemed to fix the problems for a while and the BSOD's became very rare, but after a lot of use the weird error messages became very common. I really can't use the computer any more. I'm typing this on my laptop.

The computer shop I go to say's this is probably a hardware issue. They can't seem to figure it out. I've had it in multiple times. This is a nightmare for a computer owner. I have replaced virtually all the parts and my computer is still utterly unusable. The only program I installed since the last reformat wa... Read more

A:Disappearing Icons, Computer Crashes, BSOD, computer unusable

Holy.....
uh...
Why don't you just buy a new one! WOW.. Sorry..
Well, you SHOULDN'T have played with drivers...That is what's up.
Tried re-formatting AFTER doing those changes?
That computer shop owner though...I don't know what to say.
1) try reformatting to a version that is supported by the bios..(Check if it supports x64)...(fully ready)
2) post every error you get and attempt to find solution to each one. (Getting tired)
3) Can you mention WHEN did certain errors happen? before...after changing Processor and Graphic Card? (Getting worried)
4) Try lots of thing on the web. (hope time)
5) Revert back to the old virtual stuff. (shameful return)
6) take off the good pieces and attempt to use it on another computer or sell it. (Hopeless)

NOTE: as I was writing this post ANOTHER BSOD happened

Hi All,

I need help.
My computer is basically useless now with BSOD every 5-15min constantly.
And this all started after I did the dreadful Anniversary Update.

In the mist of all the problems I got desperate and did a full clean/format install of windows 10 using the latest ISO that is available on their website which obviously did not work

Here is another post where I started to ask for help and it all went nuts for some reference:
Problem After Anniversary Update - Windows 10 Forums

Attached is the ZIP file required.
Attached are some of the latest BSOD as well (Including the one that happened while writing this post!!)
Attached pic if current Win Version

PLEASE HELP!!!
2ND NOTE:
All the posts after I started this thread have been BSOD that have happened after I posted this first post!!
What a mess.

so, me being a complete idiot decided to go months without scanning for viruses.
scanned today after noticing my computer being exceptionally slow, and multiple programs being corrupted or the files missing.
there were 13 malicious items, and 5 nonmalicious items (they were all PUPs)
there were 3 that stood out the most of the 13 malicious ones (most were stolen.data files and malware.traces)

backdoor.agent.dcrsagen
virtool.vbinder
backdoor.bot

I did research on each of these. after panicking a little about all the super private information.. heh i have on my laptop, i attempted to remove them with my AV.
this seemed to have fixed many of the problems i was having, such as slowness, certain programs not running, and random crashing. however, the main #1 thing i use my computer for is skype.
skype had been acting up, giving me errors before i removed the viruses. after multiple restarts whcih took 10 minutes each, i got it working.
after cleaning out the viruses, i restarted my computer per instruction. when i got back on, it all seemed normal. until i tried to start skype.
each and every time i open skype, type in my username, and sign in, it'll say "signing in..." and then just stop, and kick me to the sign in page.
theres absolutely NO error message. ill keep trying, same thing. ill restart skype, same thing. nothing works. tried different accounts, those do the same thing.

When browsing a site, I accidentally agreed to download a file called "MediaTubeCodec" via an activeX popup on my screen. As it was downloading I went to click "cancel" in the "downloads" window, but right as I did the download finished and "cancel" turned to "open". The program insalled itself and dissapeared. I was hoping it was nothing, but shortly after I started recieving those dreaded pop-ups advertising a fake virus-protection program called System Defender. I was then notified that my "automatic updates" for Windows security stuff had been turned off.

I was looking at my McAfee options and wondering why McAfee hadn't caught anything when my desktop flickered, my icons re-arranged themselves and my wallpaper was replaced with a red background with a large bloody biohazard sign and the words, "Download privacy protection software now". To make things worse, the background is somehow a giant button, so if I click ANYWHERE on my desktop, IE pops up and takes me to the fake-virus protection site. My clock has been replaced with a thing that says "VIRUS ALERT".

I decided not to wait around for McAfee to do a full scan and went to do a System Restore, but the control panel, show-all programs tab, My Computer, and many other components of the start menu are missing. Hitting ctrl+alt+del gives me a message that says "the task manager has been disabled by the administrator".

Hey,

My laptop went super slow and it takes over 10min for the laptop to switch on and ages to do anything. Somebody suggested it could be something with BBC iPlayer (Kservice component working in the background) but I have had this for months and all worked fine. When I stop the KService process, the laptop works a little faster but still not back to normal.

I am running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3. I have run Spybot to remove malware and it found nothing. AVG hasn't found anything either.

I am it my wits end and have no idea what to do. I will really appreciate some help. Thanks, Lili

My computer has suddenly gone from running fine to running so slowly it is unusable. I suspect that I'm infected with something but I haven't had any luck trying to find out what it is.

I can boot to Safe Mode and the machine runs fine. From there I ran ComboFix a couple times but that didn't help. I can post the log file if needed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott (not)

A:Computer so slow it is unusable

Updates on this:
I downloaded and ran MalwareBytes (in SafeMode) but it came back clean.

I now have the machine up and running in normal mode but it is still extremely slow. When I try to open any application from the Start menu, it doesn't load at all. I am however able to run Task Manager and I can see all the processes that are running. I've sorted the list by Memory Usage and run some searches on the processes that are using the most but nothing has turned out to be a virus.

I suspected that my problem was with Comodo, but I was able to shut that down and the problem persists. However I have noticed that cmdagent.exe is still running.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I seemed to have picked up something. The computer is unusable (except in safe mode) due to being extremely slow, things unable to be opened, rebooting etc. It also seems to prevent Avast from being opened.

It is a Toshiba laptop, running Windows 7.

I have run the scans as below.

Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks

I have done my updates of Vista as required and installed programmes like Adobe, Quicktime, Open Office etc to use on the laptop. Volume mixer wont open for me to adjust volume among other things. When i try to run Secunia it stays stuck at 5% for hours on end

I have installed and uninstalled various anti malware software to try and establish the cause and only a low level threat was detected. I have tried the following

Hey everyone, first post here. It looks like my symptom is similar to that of the poster beneath me, but in the interest that each case is unique, I'm going to create this separately.

The symptom: My laptop starts up and immediately skyrockets to close to 100% RAM usage, dropping randomly from time to time; except for those short intervals, it is totally unusable (and those intervals are so short and infrequent that it's unusable anyways). I could not manage to get a screenshot, so attached is a photo I took with my phone (you will see on there that at that time I had attempted to start Firefox - the issues were occurring otherwise regardless). It appears the issue is being caused by svchost.exe using over 1,000,000K, though I imagine that is a symptom of something else.

Some background I think will help:

I am using a Lenovo T530 running Windows 7 64-bit with 4GB of RAM; the puppy is about 3 years old.

I had begun having issues a couple months ago where the WIFI would drop ("No Internet Connection") for no apparent reason (and others using the same WIFI had no issues). I also noticed what I took to be issues with the sound card - audio would occasionally freeze and scratch, on the speakers or any pair of headphones.

Drivers updates seemed to fix those. Shortly after, I started experiencing general severe slowness across the machine and my trackpad ceasing to work from time to time. I did disk clean ups, defragged; took my C drive from being ... Read more

Try downloading and running Process Explorer.
Hover the mouse over the svchost that is using lots of ram and see what services are running under it.
Provide a screen shot (or picture) if possible.

Also download MiniToolbox, check the box for 'last 10 event viewer errors', click 'go' then paste the result with your reply.

Please help! My system is badly infected and nearly unusable. It started with annoying popups then went absolutely haywire. 2 nights ago I was playing an online game when suddenly I was booted out of the program, windows started popping up everywhere uncontrollably and unknown music started playing even though there were no applications running. I ran Malwarebytes and it found 27 malicious items which it removed some of, but others were untreatable. I have the log file if needed. I'm getting a fake alert in the running apps toolbar at the bottom right of the screen. A yellow triangle with an exclamation point stating my computer is at risk because spyware protection software is disabled. When I scroll over it with my curser it disappears. Yesterday my system crashed so hard while booting nothing would run. Also, it takes about 10 minutes for the boot process when it used to take only 1 or 2. On the last boot up whatever is scrambling my system's brains would not allow my antivirus software to load. I also had trouble getting onto the internet, though I had no connectivity issues.

I was told that I would have to do a complete full system factory restore, but I have no XP disk (Windows XP is my OS) and the <ctrl> <F11> partition does absolutely nothing. I need help.

This started showing up in my tasks a couple days ago, and as other posts have said, it duplicates in the task menu until all system resources are used up.

I tried following the guide to download DDS and post my logs, but when I try to download it, I get a security alert saying that my current security settings will not allow the file to be downloaded.  I've never had an issue downloading things before, so not sure if that may be related to this dllhost issue or not, but in any case, I can't get DDS to download...

I'm running Windows 7.

Any help in getting DDS to download and/or getting this dllhost thing under control would be much appreciated!

I've also tried starting in safe mode, and it's better, but the dllhost.exe*32 still shows up there and eventually bogs things down.

I've run Avast virus scan, MalWare Bytes, and Spybot S&D, and none of them found or got rid of the problem.

Thanks!

I went out of the country for the summer, and left my computer with my family. (bad idea I know)

Now that school has started up, when I boot the computer normally, it crawls along, takes almost ten minutes to boot. Then when I click on something, such as Word, it takes around ten minutes for it to fully open. If I boot the computer into safe mode, things run smoothly, so it's something that's running that is slowing me down.

Also, when I try to uninstall programs, I have to manually start the windows installer from services.msc, and then it tells me to wait for another program to finish uninstalling before I can uninstall anything.

I have been using AVG, but maybe it's just in my head, but I feel like it's become more resource hungry, but I am not a pro, so I could be wrong.

I can't figure out what is going on, so I appreciate any help, and thank you in advance.

Dear lord, my computer is riddled with problems, as I've started 3 threads in less than a week, but here goes.

After I start my computer, I can use it and it runs perfectly fine. That is, until about 15-30 minutes in, I get that Windows dialog pop up sound (ding!), and that's when things stop happening. I don't even get a pop up, just the noise.

Then, I try to open a new tab in Firefox and instead of a page, I get a solid grey screen. I go to the start menu and try to click on ANYTHING and it does nothing, just sits there and pretends I did not click at all. If I try to open anything from my desktop, it isn't a valid WIN32 application all of a sudden.

I've ran multiple spyware removal programs and ran a NOD AV. All I've picked up are tracking cookies.

Here my HJT log, hopefully there's something in there.

I have one office PC and one office Laptop.  Both were upgraded to Windows 10.  The slowing of the computers were not immediate but over the past 3 months the have gotten bogged down with windows services.  My CPU is always running +50%, my memory ranges from 60-80% and it takes forever to load web browsers and any programs - especially on the laptop.  I've run MSservice diagnostics, downloaded Malwarebytes, have Norton360, ran a few external scans all to no avail.  I'm not the worst with computers but apparently not the best - I can't figure this one out.  I'm to the point where I'm wondering if my computers are just not capable of running Windows 10.

So today,I opened my laptop (pretty good one, also Win 7) as usual, but when I logged in, there was an abnormally huge amount of lag.I can't do anything in normal mode (and I am writing this from safe mode with networking). But I can't live in safe mode forever (no sound being the main cause, then not being able to play games). I came to this forum to seek help in the experienced community i have met  . So please help me! And if any other info is necessary, tell me.

A:Computer unusable due to extreme lag on login

OK,so after a bunch of restarts (and something else -check next paragraph) it works. My other problem now is that after logging on i get a black screen ( safe mode ok as usual)
The other thing I did was follow a tutorial on enabling audio in safe mode .If a mod is ok with it i can post a link ( you need to follow the tutorial until the restart part) I don't know if i should modify this topic in any way. If i resolve the black screen, i will edit this post with steps (if it's gonna be any use for anybody )
Also after the tutorial-reset everything went back to normal speed.
If i need to modify the title ( i dunno if i can do that, i am new to forums in general) tell me!

EDIT: Quick ninja-edit for correcting grammar.
EDIT2: Added the last part (title thingy and tutorial-reset).Aparrently i love editing! Also sorry for bad english (if there is any)
EDIT3: I am back to square one. Please help me ;(.

Windows update recently upgraded my Windows 10 to build version 1703 version 15063.138.When I boot the system Explorer.exe is crashing every ~1 second and restarting. As this provides the destop it makes the system unusable. I have subsequently reinstalled Windows from scratch, following the relevant HP screens to do so. The problem still persists. I hvae read Microsoft help article 3020114 which seems to suggest the problem may be caused by the boot volume (C being solid state. The articlke suggests a patch that needs to be applied, however, as I have no desktop I cannot run Windows Update. Basicall I a stuck with a 1 month old computer that I can't use.

I have a 2 year old Sony Vaio with Windows XP. Everything was fine until two days ago. I downloaded a photo off of a PhotoShop site. It sat on my desktop not as a folder but as a 1 and a half inch by two inch photo.

As I was finishing my work, I thought I'd click the photo off by selecting the "x" in the minimize maximize off menu that formed the top border of the photo.

Unfortunately I hit something else and the photo became my wallpaper.

I forget what I did to get my original wallpaper back, but at that point, when I saw my original wallpaper back, I thought everything was fine.

I then decided to go to the start menu and use the search function.

While searching for a file, the ominous dialogue box came up saying that there was an error with the Windows Explorer end of things and did I want to report it to MicroSoft?

I did not do so then, but later on, again when trying to use "Search" I got the same message. I decided that I'd never be allowed to use Search again unless I reported it, so I ageed to do it. This triggered AOL online to start, but AOL was confused about what it considered "an unrequested URL" and
then AOL froze.

I tried everything. Could not get AOL to minimize, turn off and shut down or anything else.

So I turned the computer off. When I attempted to re-boot, the computer came up in a different manner than I have seen before. It asked as it was booting if I wanted to hit F8 for a reboot in ... Read more

No, not necessarily. Follow this THREAD

If you are un-able to recover, then you'll need to consider other options.

I am very frustrated with Windows 8. I upgraded my Dell laptop the weekend it came out and performance on my laptop has slowly degraded. Now I'm too the point where my computer is so slow, it just won't work. Reboots take forever. 10-15 minutes from startup until I can login. Another 10-15 minutes before the Desktop is up. But still, apps won't launch. When I can launch the Task Manager, it says my hard drive is at 100% utilization, even though I have not launched any apps. I went through and removed unneccesary items from the startup menu. My computer is a couple years old, but I was under the impression that if the computer ran Win7, it could run Win8. My computer has an Intel Centrino 2 processor with 8GB RAM.

Any ideas on what could be causing my slowness?

How do I go about doing a reinstall of the OS? When I originally upgraded, I selected the "Bring Nothing Over" option.

A:Windows 8 upgrade has rendered my computer unusable

Hello Sukach, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Sounds like another bad upgrade experience.
You can use the tutorial below to help you download a ISO file that you can create a bootable USB/DVD with.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...edownload.html

Afterwards, the tutorial below can show you how to do a clean install with your Windows 8 upgrade USB/DVD.

Hope this helps,

Hey everyone. I just recently made the upgrade from Windows Vista 64bit to Windows 7 64bit. I went with the student upgrade deal, and downloaded the installer from Digital River. My install with through 4 of the 5 steps, and hung infinitely at 42% (I hear that is a very common problem with people getting it from DR). I reverted back to Vista, uninstalled some stuff and tried again. The same problem happened.

Luckily, I had versions purchased directly from Microsoft, albeit under different Keys. Since I had my own, I just downloaded the 64bit iso, and used my own key when prompted. To install that version, I mounted the iso on a virtual drive. Everything seemed to go off without a hitch. Or so I thought.

Now my computer takes roughly 5 minutes to boot - sometimes longer, and sometimes it just has my background without the actual explorer showing up. When I download files to the desktop the files take around 20 minutes to show up, even though the search bar says its in the desktop folder. Programs take absurdly long times to load, and even internet pages have problems loading to completion.

I defragmented my HDD, which took over 24 hours. I ran a memory test. I burned my installer iso, booted from it, and tried to repair windows. I've used a tune-up utility to help with the speed. Nothing has worked.

So my question is - what should I do? Also, is it possible to fix the problem without having to format my HDD? I have an upgrade version of Win7, so I'm not sure if I could loa... Read more

A:Windows 7 has made fast Computer almost unusable

Sounds like a clean install is in order. You can clean install from the Windows 7 upgrade media without having Vista installed on the computer.

The experiences that you are seeing are not what the rest of us are seeing. My experience has been very solid.

Hi, For a few months I've been having issue with a periodically slow computer. As it says it the title of this post, I noticed that when my computer is plugged in, it runs so slow that it is unsable. I have all my drivers up to date, I have checked that my power options are set to maximum when on charger, etc.If I remove the battery and plug the computer : same problem. If I use my HP docking station (power cord in the docking station instead of the computer directly) : same problem.I cleaned my Event Logs (after backing them up): same problem.I checked for unwanted processes when charger is plugged : nothing significant. The computer is not heating when plugged in, fan is running fine, I have the active cooling setting enabled, and no temperature alerts. I've read on some shaddy forums that the problem could just be my power cord being defective. It that possible? Is there a way to verify this assumption before buying a new power cord? Could it be the plug FROM the computer that is defective or since the problem also happened when docked is it unlikely? Thank you in advance for any answer/input/information. MCC

Hello,
I am hoping someone might be able to help me deal with this really nasty virus I'm dealing with. The computer runs Windows XP (and I'm typing now from a different computer).

Also, to let you know ahead-of-time, I am unable to put the recommended software onto the computer, as I will explain below. Sorry!

The other night, I was browsing and chatting on the web. Everything was fine with the computer, and I went to sleep. Then, the next morning, I woke up and opened the computer. I was trying to watch a video, but after about 20 seconds Firefox suddenly closed (I normally use chrome but was on Firefox for compatibility reasons). I tried again, but this time it did the same thing even faster. The next time I tried to open it, a string of about 15 or so error windows popped up (layering like they do to produce a line sloping downward from left to right) telling me that there were errors. Unfortunately, I did not have the presence of mind to write this down, but they had something to do with rundl32.exe.
Since then, here's what I've figured out:

---It disabled task manager, displaying a message to the effect that the admin had disabled the task manager. This is the only thing I've been able to fix, by going into regedit.
---It got rid of most of my files, including all my anti-virus files except for MRT (which may or may not be complicit in this affair) but excluding weird things like Total War
---It disabled search and "my computer," amongst other th... Read more

First time poster. Hoping someone can help me out. Trying to fix a friend's PC, thought it would be an easy fix, but apparently not.Specs:XP Pro2GB RAM2.53GhzInitial symptoms:-Computer slows to a standstill. Right clicking on the desktop or doing anything for that matter results in a good 30-60 second delay. I don't hear the hard drive churning during this time, it literally sounds like the entire machine has just paused. It takes minutes just to open outlook and send an email.-User reported McAfee caught a couple of trojans, no details on the actual trojans-When opening IE7 it immediately closes. I fixed this by installing IE8, but i'd like to know what was causing itSo far I've used superantispyware, and malwarebytes all in safe mode. Between the two, they must have found a good 250 items that have been removed. A reboot and then running them again came back with no problems. However, I'm afraid this computer continues to "pause" for 30+ seconds constantly. There has to be something on this PC causing it. I've gone through and eliminated a number of programs from running when windows starts. I'm basically just down to Mcafee.Below is a hijackthis log. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 5:48:56 PM, on 7/1/2009Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)Boot mode: Normal Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\... Turned out to be the latest version of mcafee that was recently installed. The software was maxing out cpu resources constantly.

Switch him over to avg free for now.

I would be curious if anyone noticed anything suspicious in the log though.

Hello,

I have a workstation on our small P2P network that, upon the user shutting down last night, auto installed one update (i.e. user did not ask for anything to be installed). I have our computers set to notify of updates, but we install them after reviewing them because we don't always want the updates that are available.

The screen was the typical blue with the standard message: "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 1 of 1"

The problem is: the update never finished installing. It ran for 2 1/2 hours last night before the user turned it off. When she turned it on this morning, the update continued to install. It's now been about 45 minutes, and the screen is still displaying the above message.

I've never seen a single update take this long. Is there a problem? How long should we allow it to continue? Is it ever safe to shut down when it says not to? Is there anything I can do to get this process to complete, as it is now interfering with productivity.

Any help appreciated.

A:Win auto update won't complete - computer is unusable

The update FINALLY finished, and the computer shut down normally, and the user rebooted with no problem.

I see a lot of people have looked at this thread, and some no doubt are looking for answers to the questions I posed. I would still like the questions answered, because they're still things I want to know - especially the question about shutting down when the screen says not to. I would expect that could seriously damage the machine.

Well guys, I don't know what happened, It just started last friday, when I took a break from the computer from that friday to tuesday, where my dad had the computer for those days, and before my dad got to the computer, the computer was fine.

But now, it takes forever for the computer to start-up, shut-down, do internet stuff, load images, start programs, the whole nine yards.

And now, I get pop-ups on IE and Firefox about virus protection and how my pc is near-death, all that fake crap. My Keyboard also turns unreadable for a while, It keeps going on and off for some reason, and the connection is good.
I don't know what to do, cause I really don't wanna reboot my computer :(

And I did do a HijackThis Log.
