Recycle Bin - Auto deletes Despite Properties

Q: Recycle Bin - Auto deletes Despite Properties

Hi. Any suggestions please? My recycle bin empties itself every time the machine shuts down. This is despite the settings in "Properties". In the recycle bin Properties panel, the radio button next to "Don't move files..." is off. The "Display delete confirmation dialogue" box is checked. How do I set the recycle bin not to automatically empty itself? Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: Recycle Bin - Auto deletes Despite Properties

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

so i have an issue where the recycle bin perm deletes everything without prompt.
i've tried deleting the C:\recyclebin$ folder but it doesn't work.

works ok in safe mode and under another account so it seems to be just the one user account. and yes, i'm aware i could just re-create the user account but i'd rather not and try to fix it if possible.

any idea's? attached screenshot of the recycle bin settings.

A:Recycle Bin permanently deletes

Follow the tutorial and thread posted below you'll find options to block your system to permanently deleting files without moving it into recycle bin:

Recycle Bin - Permanently Delete Items Automatically

One more reference URL:

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/wi...-delete-files/
If that didn't helps you, consider repairing your system using Installation CD DVD or inbuilt system recovery options. Moreover, you can also try creating a fresh administrator account for your system and then try performing the same functions.

Hope it helps!!

In Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 64-bit I am not given the option to move files to the Recycle Bin. Instead, when I delete a file I am asked "Are you sure you want to permanently delete this file?"In the Recycle Bin properties for each hard drive partition I have not selected "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin" and I have check-marked "Display delete confirmation dialog."

I can't remember precisely when this started to happen, but I did install Update 1 recently. I don't know if that matters.

Windows 7 - 32 bit Desktop

I set the recycle bin to a maximum of 5GB (meaning when I place a file/video etc into the bin over 5 GB the recycler would delete it immediated giving me more HDD space), however when I delete a file these days it keeps filling up the recycle bin and refuses to delete anything on its own, which means I have to empty the recycle bin manually. My hard drive space went down to 3% until I realized the recycler was no longer deleting files. This is a new issue for this machine and I haven't made any changes to the system, non whatsoever. Some help would be appreciated guys.

A:Recycle bin no longer deletes files

That's not really the way it works.
If you want to immediately delete a file just use SHIFT DEL combination in File manager. That bypasses the recycle bin.

That maximum size is really meant to be the amount of disk space the contents of the bin can occupy and is for the sum of the sizes of the files in there.

Check for a key called "NoRecycleFiles" in

If present, try setting the value to 0. Alternatively, delete it.

This happened a few weeks after we got Windows 8 installed into our Toshiba Windows Vista laptop.

I was typing something in a document and as soon as i went back to correct a mistake, all the words after my cursor began deleting by themselves. I press the arrow signs randomly and it stops for 5 seconds and starts again. I closed the document with the previously saved version and refreshed my computer a few times. I reopened the document and the auto-delete had stopped.

Then another time, I opened my mail and all of a sudden, every mail in my inbox got deleted. Again, I closed the window, refreshed my computer and reopened it. Deleting had stopped and i got my mail back from the trash.

Sometime later, I clicked on my music folder and it disappeared. I found it in the recycle bin and when i clicked it, a window popped up asking me if i wanted to permanently delete it. I try to close it and another same window pops up again. I have to close the recycle bin window and refresh the computer again.

As more time goes by, these random delete modes occur more frequently- like at least once every hour now. I want to find a solution before I cant use this laptop anymore. I think it might be some virus or malware causing this but im totally clueless. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!!

Hi,

New to the forum here. I have a problem with the Recycle bin in my Windows Vista 32bit that i could not find a fix.

I've read thru all the posts about the recycle bin in the tutorials but still couldn't find the answer.

The problem i have is when i delete something, it doesn't show in the recyle bin. I can only access the deleted contents from windows explorer. Whenever i right-click the recycle bin icon properties on my desktop windows show the error message "the properties for this item is not available"

I can't even set the recycle bin storage since i can't get the recycle bin properties window to appear.

Is there a fix for this ?

Hi,

Just a quick heads-up, NTL have installed their new E-mail anti spam
system. It will decide if mail handled by their mail handling service
is likely to be spam,
and if it decides that it is likely to be spam,
it will delete it.

That is the default setting, the setting it is set to by NTL.

You can go into your mail settings, and choose to have your mail sent
on as it comes, or to have your mail sent on marked as spam if the
NTL system thinks its spam.

I have set mine to be sent on marked as spam, but i only found out
about this by accident, i feel sure that quite a lot of my mail has
been deleted since this system has been on-line.
None of the anti spam systems are 100 per cent, although i think the
baysean system comes close.
I would rather deal with it at my end, thank you.

To alter your settings, go to NTL webmail, you have to log in on the
NTL site to do this using your NTL username and password.

Regards, John

I can't use my recycle bin without either going into the recycle bin and deleting the files that way or using disk cleanup. When I right click on the recycle bin, there's no "empty recycle bin" option, and when I click on properties, it says "the properties for this item are not available." I have tried putting the info back into the registry to repair it, and a few other things I've found in the forums to try but to no avail. Is there some way to "reinstall" the recycle bin? Reformatting is not an option at this point because I have many, many karaoke files that I can't back up right now. Thanks in advance for any help!!

So - cleaning up the PC found that there are a few 'extra' recycle bin entries that aren't disks. Instead of having just C:\ and D:\, I have Playlists, Sample Music, and a couple more.

I haven't found extra $recycle.bin folders ... but not sure the common dir /ahs $recycle.bin /s command would find them.

Question 1: Anyone else have extra items listed in their Recycle Bin properties?

Question 2: Anyone with a clue how to delete these superfluous entries?

Windows 7 Ultimate -- I just added an SSD and have been fighting the Samsung installer issues (should have done the move manually as I usually do, but got lazy)... however I'm not sure the SSD Data Migration tool caused this particular problem. More than likely it was an accidental drag-drop move of a recycle bin whilst all folders were visible. Or something went wrong as I reorganized my RAID5's (moved doc/music/image/video user folder locations off the SSD using the standard folder Location setting).

Ideas?

I just remembered this (I used Symantec products from 2000-2006) and thought that I might remind some users.

Symantec/Norton products have that phantom Recycle Bin where items appear to be deleted from your system, but in reality they are just stored somewhere else. This results in hard drive space appearing to shrink (mysteriously) and can be aggravating to the user.

My advice: Do not enable such in your version of your Symantec product. There are options to disable the feature in the program settings.

I've got a user who cannot send stuff to his recycle bin.
Anytime he deletes something or drag-and-drops it to the recycle bin it automatically gets deleted and never shows up in the bin.

The auto-delete box under the recycle bin properties is not checked, and the registery was not set for auto-delete at NukeOnDelete under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BitBucket.

He is the only one who has had problems like this, and the problem is with every network computer he logs into.

Is there any way to fix this other than deleting his user account and then recreating him a new one?

Has anyone else even seen this problem?

A:Recycle bin keeps auto-deleting...ARGH!

Hi,

Only thing you might look at is:

You should see something similar to this in properties (different OS are not alike)

> configure drives independently
> use one setting for all drives (check this one)
> do not move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted
>Display delete confirmation dialog box (check this one)

The second and last checked. This should be the "default" setting for normal operation. I know you mentioned the one, but didn't know about the other.

I am assuming there is some setting on this box that does this. Is anyone familiar with this situation, and can you point me in the right direction?

I want to have my recycle bin in "Details" view, sorted by date descending. I can set it fine but then 15-30 mins later when I open the recycle bin again, it has gone back to the regular, alphabetic list view. This automatic change of view doesn't happen for a little while since I can change the view, close the recycle bin, open it again and see that all is apparently well. I then leave it alone but some time later (hour+) when I open the recycle bin again, the view has reset again.
I am using XpSP3, I am the machine admin, I have run avira antivir and spybot with no success. Not sure if this is related, but I can't change my DEP (data execution prevention) settings either. I can open the DEP window (system > advanced > performance settings > DEP) and change things on it, but when I re-open it immediately, none of the changes have been saved/retained. The DEP program exceptions list just goes back to how it was, ignoring all my changes.

I have Word 2002, SP3, for Windows Office XP Pro.

My problem is I want to permanently turn OFF the autocorrect options (all of them: correct initial capitals, correct first letters of days, etc etc, autoformat, as well as auto text and auto type).

Yes, I have unchecked all the boxes in Tools > Autocorrect Options, the problem is I have to painstakingly go though all the boxes every time I open Word and uncheck them. My setups are not remembered.

I can't figure out how to make these options stay set this way.

I've tried installing the Office Resource Kit and setting a system policy (though I am the only user on this PC), but no success.

I had to rebuild my system a month ago -- before that, I never had any problems, Word seemed to remember exactly my preferred set up and saved autocorrect options etc to the normal template.

I checked the normal template and it is in Doc Settings folder where it should be.

I searched the forums and Word help but can't seem to find any advice, mainly because most people usually run these options and they only wish to modify the instances where they apply, rather than permanently disable them.

Please help! Much appreciated! Thanks!

Hi;

I have a folder of home videos that I back up to a USB key with Syncback. The key is nearly full and I'm trying to reduce the size of that folder. But here's the thing; If I right-click on my 'Home videos' folder and select 'Properties', it tells me I have 564 files in 85 folders, taking 2.67Gb.

However, if I open the folder and search for *.* to show all the files, then select all, right-click, 'Properties', it tells me I have 2224 files in 249 folders taking 6.41Gb. Still, at the bottom of the Windows Explorer window it says 649 items selected.

This is the case on both the folder in My Documents on the PC and also the matching folder on the USB key.

Treesize also shows 2.67Gb for both folders.

In fact as far as I can figure, what with everything else on the same USB key, there wouldn't even be room for a 6Gb folder.

I've tried showing both hidden and system files and folders but there's nothing extra to see.

Can anyone please explain this anomaly? I must be doing something wrong but I can't figure it out!

I had a problem deleting an older version of Firefox. The Firefox Setup .exe file was stuck in the Recycle Bin, it wouldn't delete and it wouldn't restore. Believing that the Recycle Bin was corrupt, I used this method from the DOS prompt:

rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin

I refreshed my Desktop and when I clicked on the Recycle Bin. While the file appeared to be missing, the Recycle Bin would not load properly so I restarted my computer.

Now when I click on the Recycle Bin icon, it points to my entire computer (exactly the same as clicking on "Computer" off the Start Menu) instead of the Recycle Bin folder.

How can I restore the Recycle Bin icon so that it shows only the contents of the Recycle Bin?

My gratitude to any and all who can help me.

Good afternoon,
Hopefully someone has experienced this and can offer advice.

A user is deleting files, but they are not appearing in the recycle bin

- user is deleting from her computer, and not a network location, or flash drive
- computer is not partitioned - only has a "C" drive
- computer is W7 32-bit
- user is not a local admin
- Use has 6 different recycle bins (right-click on RB desktop icon > properties > recycle bin location); some of the locations are "My Pictures", "My Videos" etc.... We are not able to manage the size of
these locations.
- all of the RB locations are set to "Custom Size"
- have tried:
a. deleting everything out of the RB
b. (running as admin) RD /S /Q C:\$Recycle.bin
c. set to view hidden & system files/folders, gone to "C" and deleted the $RECYCLE.BIN folder. clicked yest at all the prompts, including: Do this for all current items

** after both b & c, rebooted the computer

So far, nothing has worked. Might anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

In trying to resolve the issue, I've deleted several leftover Windows Live files and registry entries (after making a backup) that weren't removed when I uninstalled Windows Live a few months ago.

For whatever reason, the files won't leave the recycle bin, and the streams are still active.

One shot is of the recycle bins on external drive, the other shot is a screenshot of the recycle bins on my C drive on laptop.
I'm logged in as Administrator because my normal login cannot access any of these recycle bins. And my normal login is in the Admin group. Using Windows Explorer as Administrator, I'm unable to see the Recycle bins. I can see them with my regular login. Very odd.

I'm so desperate for help. Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks for any help.

Hi... I have a Dell Laptop which is running Windows 7. Whenever i try to delete something, the dialogue box asks "would you like to permanently delete this file?" and seems to totally bypass the recycle bin.

I tried right clicking the recycle bin icon to change properties. The options for "Custom size" and "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" are UNCHECKED but are also both greyed out and cannot be changed! "Display delete confirmation dialog" is not grayed out, and is checked.

Also my C: drive doesn't have the Recycle.bin folder. I tried to fix the Recycle bin settings from command prompt by running : rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin. But still after restarting the computer the recycle.bin folder was not there.

Is there any fix for this?

This is not at all urgent or anything...just a question which has been puzzling me for a while.

I'd imagine that there are different types/levels of delete on my computer...but basically is anything really deleted?
What happens to all the junk mail I get every day (after I delete it)?
What happens to all the items in the Recyle Bin when I empty it?

I am told that the Police have ways of retrieving data which most people cannot retrieve...where is this stored? Does this mean that my HD will become 'full' at some point? and thus need emptying ... which I guess means rebuilding.

Looking forward to learning about the delete button!

A:Where do deletes go?

Nothing is actually deleted. Even when you delete emails from your deleted box and empty your recycle bin, the files are still there on your hard drive. However, the space they take on disc is marked as available so eventually they will get written over. Until that happens it is still possible to read those files with the right software.

Arghh big problem guys!
When I "deleted browsing history" on IE7, (nothing to hide, honest) it deleted the entire contents of the desktop, which (stupidly of me) holds many important spreadsheets etc!
Do you think the desktop path is in the wrong place or something?
I tried using a file recovery tool to get them back and it found them but they were all corrupted =(
If anyone has a better idea to get them back safe and well, or at least to stop this happening again, please PLEASE reply.
Charlie.

Here's the skinny...

I am in tech support, and I have been for about 4 years. I know the basics, and I understand software. This is why I had no problem helping my girlfriend's brother build a computer. We put everything together and built an awesome machine for around $500. Everything was working great and then about 4 days after loading all the software, we restarted the computer and NTLDR was missing. This was not the first time we had restarted and there was NO floppy disk (haha, I know that's what jumped into your head)! I spent hours trying to figure out what happened. I finally booted into DOS and when I looked at the C: drive there was nothing in it but some files with weird characters. I tried a recovery console but there were no files and I tried fixing NTLDR by resetting the master boot record. Eventually, I had no choice but to reformat and do EVERYTHING again. I don't know what would have caused this but I was thinking that it might be a virus.
Now we jump ahead a couple weeks and everything is working great. This time I had loaded McAfee Internet Security first so that I would not let a virus fool me again. The system hadn't been restarted for a couple days so we restart the computer (after it has already been restarted many times in the past). NT Loader is missing AGAIN!!! Once again I try to check for files. I throw the hard drive into my machine and see if I can find anything on it. THERE IS NOTHING. Why are files suddenly leaving th... Read more

I'm working on a 'LENOVO C560 ALL-IN-ONE' running WINDOWS 8.1... It is a public computer and when I make any changes, such as loading MALWAREBYTES or adding something to INTERNET EXPLORER FAVORITES list, all is lost when I reboot??? Even when I defrag the HD, it goes back to being fragmented when I reboot? Any help would be greatly appreciated. (It is not connected to any network, and only has WIFI internet access.)

I don't have an answer for you. but check the recycle bin as your deleted items should be there and can be restored

Hello,

Have Win XP SP 1a running on P-4 1.6 Ghz system, Zoom V.92 PCI modem.

At some point IE 6 began deleting all cookies - so now I have to manually/right-click login everywhere I'm a member at once I either log off, reboot, etc.. Even Google Preferences don't hold.

Yes, I have SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, and AdAware, yet I see nothing in any of them referring to my good and NEEDED cookies being blocked. I also uninstalled all of these and it didn't change a thing.

I thought it may be IE Cache Cleaner, so I haven't used it since this began. Although I think I'll unistall this one now since I'm not using it.

--------------

I REALLY need help with this ASAP. It's been driving me nuts for almost 2 weeks.

Thank You.

what is that software that is advertised about retrieving 'sent emails'? I have heard ads for software that essentially says any email you have already sent, can still be deleted by you the sender

A:Software that deletes 'sent email' ...????

Darn I seen the site a copy months back but for where.
I think if who you sent it too did not open it then you could delete it.
You could put limits on it too like how many time they can open the email or can only be open before whatever date.

It was a web base email service
