Preferred Solution: Unable to open any Microsoft KB article with "protected mode on" for Internet zone.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The message is a waste of my screen real estate. Yes, Protected mode is turned off. Sure it is, I turned it off myself, and it will stay off. Now how do I disable this annoying nag message?
Also the messages about File Downloads. Never once in my life I clicked a download link by mistake. Yes, I'm clicking that dang URL, because I wan't to download that dang file, now get out my way, annoying warning message. How do I disable this one
too? Thank you in advance

Hi,
Based on my research, this is by design. You cannot disable the warning when you open a new IE windows.

Hello!

The subject says it all. We have all the
PCs in a domain. Via GPO
is "Enhanced Protected Mode"
aktivated.
Under Win 8.1.
everything works perfectly.

Update on Win10: domain user
(with roaming profiles
- but should not matter ...) are not able to open any page in IE zone "internet. If I type the URL manually and press ENTER, nothing happens. When I click on a link tp any external page on our
intranet page, two new tabs open with
the URL "res:
//ieframe.dll/acr_error.htm#,about: blank"

Intranet and Trusted Sites
(also via GPO defined) works fine (because protected mode is disabled for them by default).

By trial and error I found out that it
is the "EPM" that causes the problem.
If I switch it off, IE works again.

But why does it work
under Win8.1 and no longer
under Win10?
(BTW, when I try to start IE like this "iexplore -extoff", it opens with an empty window, stays for about ten seconds and then closes again. No error message, nothing ...)

Can anyone confirm this behavior?

Michael

When I have Internet explorer opened in "kiosk mode" on one monitor and I open a hyperlink from the other monitor it will open the link in a new IE window (non-full screen) .    If I do the same test with IE not in "kiosk mode"

Just wondering if this is expected behavior, we've just completed upgrade from v1.7 to v1.8 (all gateways successfully updated) however we notice that we are unable to open our console site.  Not sure if this is expected because we intentionally
ran a "partial" update and will not see new data for 3 weeks (- but we'd expect to at least see our splash page for ATA, we don't just a blank white page) or if we need to take further steps.

Hi,
Since a few days back a strange problem started ocurring for some users in our domain. Some have IE9 others like me have IE11. Problem is that IE can't browse Internet pages (it just keep loading with the white screen) when Protected mode is ON. Previously
there was no problem with this. Other browsers don't have this issue. OS in the company is Win7.
Thank you.
Leo.

A:Can't browse Internet zone when protected mode is ON

Hi Leo,
Could you please include a link(s) (copied from the IE Address bar) to any website you are having problems with, in your questions. This will enable us to visit the sites to make some tests and guesses.
Protected Mode, on Win7 forces the IE tab process to use a x64 process, so x86 activex controls will not run and are blocked.
For IE11/Win7 there is also ActiveX filtering which will stop x86 or x64 ActiveX controls from running.
IE11 also has depreciated the ActiveXControl object which some sites may use for feature detection. From memory, I don't think IE9 had ActiveX filtering, but there are Addons for all versions of IE (Flash block for example) that have a similar functionality.
Use Tools>Manage Addons>Show all Addons to locate and find the properties of your installed ActiveX controls and whether or not they have been disabled.
So I await your re-post with some sample web addresses where the problem is occurring.
Also, the first step in troubleshooting web browser issues is to test in noAddons modeRob^_^

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Hello,
I'm finding that our users are experiencing issues accessing full functionality from multiple web sites and when I disable Protected Mode, their issue is resolved.  I have some specific cases that I would like to share:
1. A website which is secured.  The Windows security dialog appears and prompts the user to enter credentials (Not an HTML form...this is a windows dialog).  If protected Mode is enabled on the Internet zone, then this prompt never appears and
therefore the users cannot sign-in and gain access to the site.
2. OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online are accessed using ADFS for authentication.  The sites were attempting to load but simply timing out until I disabled Protected Mode on the Internet site.  Then the both sites (accessed via
https://portal.office.com) would completely load and be usable.
3. There are others but now that I think of it, they appear to be redundant.  It seems with Protected Mode enabled, authentication does not function properly on multiple sites.  We have tried circumventing this by adding some of these sites to
the Proxy Exceptions List and also configuring policy to treat all Proxy exceptions as Intranet Zone.  Protected Mode is disabled on the Intranet zone.  However, it seems counterintuitive to have Internet sites added to the Intranet Zone or to Bypass
the proxy server to access them.  So I would love to know where I'm going wrong with our configuration of In... Read more

I have no access issues on any of my machines except the office PC running Vista (Home Premium 64)... on the Vista machine, even though I've added the IP addresses of the networked drives to my trusted zone, they show up in Windows Explorer as being in the "Internet Zone" and I can't seem to change that (which creates all kinds of rights/permission issues for some of the applications I'm running)...

Win 7 Professional x64
EMET 5.2 & Adobe Acrobat Reader 11 were working together. Not sure what my EMET 5.2 mitigation settings were for Reader.
Upgraded to EMET 5.5 and now I get a message when launching Adobe Reader saying:
"Adobe Acrobat Reader DC cannot be opened in Protected Mode due to an incompatibility with your system configuration. Would you like to open Adobe Acrobat Reader DC with Protected Mode disabled?"
If I select open with Protected Mode disabled, Adobe still crashes for certain operations. My default EMET settings for AcroRd32.exe are everything checked except ASR.
If I disable all mitigations in EMET 5.5, Adobe Reader works normally.
If I return mitigations to default and then additionally disable EAF+, the problem persists, although I found a post saying that fixed the issue in earlier versions of EMET.
Question: Is there a custom set of mitigations that enable Reader to work, or should I disable Reader mitigations in EMET, or should I disable Protected Mode in Reader, or should I use a different PDF viewer like SumatraPDF?
Thanks

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

Hi there!

I have recently come down with the Smitfraud trojan and have downloaded the command prompt program "SmitfraudFix" to hunt down and terminate my infection. However, the actual "killing process" that SmitfraudFix undergoes requires SafeMode to work correctly (I would assume so it does not harm other normal files).

It would seem simple: log into Safe Mode and execute the prompt. Yet here is my problem! I have a laptop that was given to me by my college and instead of having my primary user account (which is given full administrator capabilities, but is not the actual Administrator account) as a "this computer" domain to log in, it logs in under the "GCC" domain (I go to Grove City College).

I would not have imagined this to ever be a problem, but when I start up Safe Mode to execute my trojan-killer I am given only two login fields, not three. Thus I have username and password inputs, but no "log on to" option to choose "GCC." So when I type in my username and password in Safe Mode they are (I presume) assumed to be "this computer" domain inputs. I think you can see where this is going...

This has been so frustrating because after I finally found out what to do to get rid of this annoying trojan I cannot ENTER INTO SAFE MODE TO DO IT! So rather than being asked to enter username, password AND choose a domain for Safe Mode, as I am in normal log on, I can only enter my username and password witho... Read more

Hi, everyone.

I hope someone here can help me, as I can't seem to solve this problem I'm having.

Basically, I have two laptops here. There is my brother's Toshiba Equium L40-156, and a HP Compaq 6720s.

I made an image of the hard drive in the Toshiba laptop, and restored that image to the HP laptop. I have spent the afternoon installing most of the necessary drivers so that the OS from the Toshiba laptop can run on the HP laptop.

The error I am having, as stated in the title, is that the message "Can't Open ACPI ATK0100 kernel Mode Driver" appears every time the system loads. I have tried researching this error, but I didn't have much luck. As suggested on various sites around the web, I have tried a few versions of the driver for the display adapter ("Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family"), but none seem to resolve the error. Nothing in Device Manager has a triangle to indicate an error.

Any insight into the situation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Tom.

I'm surprised this has worked at all for you to be honest, I wouldn't even know where to begin on all the problems you are likely to have with this scenario.

...wouldn't be surprised if authentication fails on you either.

Hey guys!

I'm getting this error when I try to upload my resume on to a website and so I'm unable to do any uploading:

"you cannot close microsoft office word because a dialog box is open office 2007"

I've had this error before and last time I deleted a windows update (can't remember what) but I'm afraid that it might have came back (blame it on the wife ). Anyways this error is linked to Norton which I don't use (using Avast).

using windows 7 (x64), office 2007, reproduces on all browsers. No processes that deal with office is running.

If anyone has any ideas as to how to get rid of this it would be lots of help. THanks.

So this morning I went to class with my Dell Latitude D630 laptop and connected to my schools wireless network with no problem.

I shut down and when I got home and started up, my CPU was stuck at 100% usage. I noticed this when I tried to open "My Network Places" since I normally switch to a cable connection at home and turn off the wireless. I did a McAfee virus scan and came up clean.

The only significant changes I can think of doing recently was converting my external Seagate drive from FAT32 to NTFS.

Sorry but I tried to edit the original post and couldn't.

I have recognized that the process which is taking up 90% CPU is called "services.exe" if that helps.

Hi

Not sure if this is the right thread for this post.

I am unable to open "Uninstall a program" through control panel. Everytime when I try to open it, I get the following error message

However, I can open this in safe mode. Unsure why this is the case. Have tried googling for help but none found.

Hello jason & welcome to SevenForums!

Have you been trying to deleting this program by deleting the folder in the DATA path? It would probably fail after trying to uninstalling in the control panel then.
Try looking for the path and see if it's there!

Also, try this well popular software, for a perfect uninstallation of a software:

Revo Uninstaller

I have a Dell Studio Desktop with IE 7 SP1 with "Vista Home Edition". Here are the computer's specs: 2.33GHZ, 4GB DDR2 SDRAM At 800mhz. I hope I gave the right info. I'm a bit of a "Novice".
Whenevr I receive a Link in "Windows Mail", it will not open. However, if I open Internet Explorer and minimize it, the Links open when I click on them. I contacted Microsoft since the computer is under Warranty.
However, they could not fix it. They said it was a "Software Problem and gave me a Phone Number to call. I would be charged for it.
The Microsoft Tech tried fixing the Defaults, but it did no good. Anyone out there who could possibly know what is causing this?
Thanks, ptfitzy

I am having an issue opening various file formats in various applications via the right-click "Open With" context menu. Every time I try, I get the following error message:

there was a problem starting C:\Windows\shimgvw.dll
A Dynamic Link Library (DLL) initialization routine failed.

It doesn't matter what file type I right-click on or what program I tell it to open with, that error message occurs every single time.

I Googled the problem but only other unrelated results about shimgvw.dll showed up and all of which are really old, like 2007 and earlier, None of which even mentions Windows 7. There is nothing regarding opening files with right-click menu or Windows 7 and this error message.

Does anybody know what the problem could be and how do I fix this? Thanks

A:Unable to right click-open with "there was a problem starting shimgvw"

I would run a System File Check (SFC) to see if there are any errors that can or can't be fixed.
You might need to run it up to 3 times to fix errors.
Here is the tutorial:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

afternoon everyone, here goes the first post.

i have what has become a very frustrating problem with a pc. it is one a friend has given to me to fix but i'm not having much luck at this point. the pc is riddled with various malware/viruses and i've managed to clean the majority off. there is obviously some still laughing at me on there though because i am unable to access the control panel, this is either from the start menu, typing in the run textbox "control.exe" or navigating to C:\windows\system32\control.exe.

This is the admin account of the pc.

Following instructions I have found on this forum and others i have run a scan using hijackthis which is posted below.

Can you get to the system properties if you go into Control Panel > System? (Classic View)

Also, you can try opening regedit (Start > run type "regedit" w/o quotes) and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Delete the keys:
NoPropertiesMyComputer
NoControlPanel

If the NoControlPanel key is not present you can find it most likely in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Recently, I've been unable to access my F: drive. When I double click on the drive I get en error that says "Application Not Found". I can, however right click on the drive and open it that way, it's just extremely annoying. It doesn't matter what device is set as the F: drive, be it a UBS drive, a virtual drive, or a CD/DVD drive, it gives me the same error. At first I thought maybe there was something wrong with my USB drive, but if I use the same USB drive as E:, G:, H: etc. it works perfectly fine. The problem seems to lie specifically with F: drive itself. I've run all my virus scans (Norton and Malwarebytes) as well as PC Tools Registry Mechanic and found nothing. I even restored my system to about a week ago with no results. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Unable to open F: drive, "Application Not Found" error

Hi JROC, Welcome to Seven Forums.

Connect your drive to the pc directly, open Disk Management, look for the drive, right click it and uninstall then reboot with it still connected.

This looks to be a tricky one. I have two PC's running windows 7 Pro with SP2. One can detect and run Canon Toolbox for scanning, the other does not. When running it states error "Unable to open Twain Source". I have not been able to identify the reason why the windows 7 installation runs differently. I have re-installed the windows 7 (upgrade/repair) on the PC that does not work.

I have read forums that recommend adding a system variable to the path. This does not work. I have tried to compare paths, setting, etc between the machines yet they are the same (at least so far).

Windows scanner and camera properties (c:\program files\windows photo viewer) shows the scanner (Canon 8400F). I ran diagnostics and scanner executes successfully. I select scan profiles and it states "No scanner detected". This is puzzling.

I worked with Canon to delete driver, and re-install (after reboot of course). Re-installed Canon tool box 4.9, the driver is for the windows 7 64 bit. Those seem to install correctly. There seems to be some issue with windows 7 as it seems to see a scanner until you run and then it cannot detect it.

It has puzzled Canon, nothing in the forum so far has a solution and I am puzzled as I have spnet many hours on this. Yet it works on one machine but not the other. I have been un-installing several applications but nothing seems to be in conflict. The driver is shown as installed and ok in device manager.

I hope this is enough information to... Read more

A:Canon 8400F - "Unable to open Twain Source" error message

I can fully relate to the problem of installing the train driver for the Canon 8400f scanner. I suddenly found my scanner not working and spent hours trying every idea I could find on the Internet without success. I tried loading and using the scanner on an old XP computer and it worked fine so I knew the scanner wasn't the problem.

I decided my problem somehow involved Windows 7 software. I downloaded and installed all of the upgrades from Microsoft, including over 40 optional ones, and after this the scanner worked fine. I've no idea which of the many upgrades solved the problem as I didn't install them one at a time..

Judging by posts on the Internet many have had or have this problem so perhaps my solution may be of help to others.

Original article at betanews.

Not going to link the full article but it touches certain subjects between Ubuntu and Windows 10. I would have been more interesting if it was on pure Debian or Arch or another major distribution but Ubuntu???

The UI (biased in my opinion since even within the linux community, desktop environment subject is never one fold)

The privacy settings (Yeah sure, way to go in the article comparing the privacy issues with windows 10 versus the one and only Ubuntu who caused an uproar on the community when they first released the privacy issues with Lens and Amazon, despite you can easily turn off)

Consistency: Nothing much to say here, in terms of the article aside from a big sense of fanboy alert

Non aggressive updates: One thing to note: Ubuntu 14.04 released an update to all Ubuntu families (initial 14.04.2) was all good and well if you were running a Unity for example, not for KDE... See this video for more information
Sure video above is not about forced upgrades, but you get the gist...

Security topic: Only one thing to touch:

"With Windows 10, yeah, there is now an app store, but largely, users still have to hunt for programs and driver packages on various websites. While seasoned Windows experts will know safe download sites to target, many others will be fooled into downloading malware. Hopefully Windows Defender catches it, but if not, the users' machines can be put at risk."Click to expand...
