Q: explorer.exe running at 50% constantly

Have run Spybot, CCleaner, Malwarebytes AntiMalware and defragged - no problems found. As of the last week or so the cpu load is almost always 50%, sometimes it flicks up or down 1 or 2%. Only other problem I seem to be having is that Windows media player network sharing has not been working with my xbox 360. It tries to access the connection and keeps timing out. Hi there.
I'd love some help from you guys into getting to the bottom of this problem.
For about the last 3-4 days my PC has been running slowly. I've been unable to do any online gaming due to this.
Explorer.exe seems to be always running at around 50% usage.
I've tried running AVG anti-virus , Malwarebytes, SpyBot and Ad-aware. The problem still persists.
I use ZoneAlarm firewall and also use Spywareblaster.

Hi,

Every time I start my PC it boots up very slowly and once I've loggd in, everything takes an age to open and the PC is generally sluggish. I've noticed that in Task Manager's process list, explorer.exe is running at 99% even when I've got no programs running!

I've tried ending the process and restarting it but this has no effect. I've run a virus scan with Norton AV and it found nothing.

Has anyone got any idea whats wrong?

I run XP SP3 32-bit version 2002- My task manager shows two explorer.exe tasks, right from the time I start up my laptop; it's doing this all the time;- One task shows a fairly-constant memory usage of 42,000KB, using CPUs 01 and 02;- The other task's memory usage fluctuates up and down between 80,000KB and 190,000KB, using a multiplicity of CPUs from low (02) to mid (49, 52, etc.) double-digits;- Is this normal? Hello!
I would appreciate any help whatsoever! This virus, or whatever it is, has me stumped!
I think I have been hijacked, only on internet explorer-when checking task manager, Internet explorer is always running, even when I "End Task" . Mozilla Firefox is working fine, but Internet explorer pops up both visible and invisible windows, and constantly asks me to make it my default program!
I suspect malware, and possibly a virus, but my spyware program cannot find anything besides cookies. My antivirus program pops up saying it has deleted multiple trojans, but something is definitely going wrong!

Hey guys, I am running Vista on an AMD Phenom X4 9150e with 4gb ram. My hard drive is constantly running and chugging away pretty good too, reading rather than writing i believe. My cpu and memory usage are quite high and my system is running relatively slow for doing simple things like opening a browser. I have attached a screenshot of the system resource monitor with basically nothing running but hijack this and a browser. Any help would be greatly appreciated. this is my godmother's system so for the most part i've had to peice together the exact issues but from what she's told me internet explorer and windows explorer crashes constantly while she is online gaming (e.g. pogo.com) and i have noticed on a previous visit that her homepage was indeed changed without her doing so.... now she has said that is has happened before... another thing is that the pc is running slow over all but imo i don't really see it.... i have so far run the online scans as well as her av that runs daily (avast)... also she has run spyware doctor and ccleaner as well as reg mechanic.... now the only firewall she had which is listed in one of these logs, was the windows firewall, i installed comodo personal firewall right after the scans were done.... she has a habit of running 2 av's at one time (which was the case up til today) and i have put a stop to this however i'm sure there's bits and peices left on her system from norton, avg and trend micro pc cillin..... if you have any advice where to look to get these fully off that would be greatly appreciated but not the main concern right now....

i have gone online and gotten instructions on how to remove some of the tracking cookies that panda pointed out... those would be Zedo, Mediaplex, Casalemedia and Fastclick... but i have not done anything to remove them yet, i thought i'd talk to you guys first....

Hi, I've just updated to win10 build 1607 (or whatever the latest number is) this morning and when I completed the update, I noticed the task bar constantly refreshing every 3-5 seconds. I believe the issue to be related to Daemon tools pro which keeps popping up a message saying the program is not compatible with this version of Windows. Unfortunately, when I try to uninstall it through add/remove programs in safe mode, explorer crashes and I'm unable to do so.

Is there any way to disable Daemon tools to see if it is causing my issue? I can open control panel in safe mode, but again I can't uninstall it. I can open explorer in regular mode but as soon as I right click or try to change directories, it freezes on me.

Go command prompt (right click -> run as admin) & type: sfc /scannow

Itwill find and try to fix any bad system files.
Also download and install malwarebytes & do a full scan, just to rule out malware.

I have a Dell.. with Windows Vista. The computer sounds like its constantly running even when I am not doing anything on it at all. I have scanned with Malware Anti bytes. I have mcaffee anti virus on the computer. when I do my task manager there is dwm.exe that uses 43,560K memory , explorer.exe uses around 53,800K, and iexplore is using 43,450K , I have 58 proccesses running, CPU usage is 52% and Physical Memory is 44%, that is with me just on here typing this, with mcaffee running...is that normal? I have looked up pretty well everything in that list and it all seems normal. I have included a HiJack this log to see if there is something in it can someone please let me know. I would appreciate it.

To get in context, my fan was making a rattling noise so l decided to disassembly my computer and clean it up, so l did it and everything ended up well with the exception that l've broke the CMOS Battery. Nevertheless, l turned on the computer and was already expecting misguided hours but l dont really cared about it. Everything was good, the fans were silent and blowing fresh air.The problem is, yesterday, l've turned on my computer and the fans immediately kicked in at full speed and now its constantly. l've made a thing that fixed the problem sometimes that was getting inside the System Diagnostic (F2 right after the boot), and wait until the fans went normal, l dont know why that solve the problem but it worked, not anymore tho.Could someone help me with this? What should l do? Do a clean reinstall of the OS perhaps? lf there isn't a fix for this, does having the fans at full speed may harm my computer? or is just a noise problem that l will need to take?Thanks

Hello,Pasting in contextual information from another topic ~ OBHere is a little history.March 30th A Windows problem first became evident as the CPU spiked to 100% and on reboot, Windows would not boot up stating it could be a hardware or software problem. At that time I thought it was the motherboard and had it swapped out because the error I had was different but the symtoms were the same prior to the system not booting.April 6th got the laptop back from HP and put in my HD to boot from. A:CPU running at 100% constantly

Hello All,

I wanted to provide an update to this. I blew away the image last night hoping to restore from the factory settings and get it up and running. That worked for about an hour before the symptoms came back. That normally leads me to think that there is something on my home network that is passing a virus along before I can patch windows, but to add further confusion to this topic, the same situation has occurred on my work laptop. Both are HP NC6400. That is the only similarity. The work laptop is running XP and my home machine Vista. I had both machines rebuilt and the work one without ever stepping into my house exhibited the same issue on a fresh build. Is it possible that there is something resident in the BIOS of these machines, or that a Virus screwed up the CPU's?

Hi, i just got my Lenovo 501S-14IKB today. Everything is working fine, its super fast in comparison to my old laptop. Only problem is, that the fan seems to run all the time and is making noticable noise. the temperature of the cpu aer all in the range of 20 only the hd was at 34. so normally that are not temperatures where cooling is needed. If i let the notebook idle for 2 min it goes dead silent but starts again even if i just scroll down a homepage. And even if i start programms whicht take more resources, the fan does not get louder. Is there anyway to controll the fan? Help would be really appreciated, Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english

My laptop fan is constantly running at high speeds. From the moment I turn it on it is loud , high and doesn't slow down. I took every bit of it apart, cleaned it well and left no dust. The operating system runs smoothly, no lag or drag when online or running files and such. I did a quick scan for malware or viruses and it found nothing suspicious. I bought my Laptop in 2014 so it's not that old and I haven't had any problems with it at all thus far. I'm a bit confused and frustrated because I don't know what the issue is. I had a complete freeze of the Operating System, due to heat I think, and perhaps a Hard Drive going bad.  The Operating system would not start, and then it did come to desktop but was frozen.  Tested HDD and it was starting to fail, and laptop was needing a full cleaning inside, including Thermal Paste.  Now HDD is replaced and pc all cleanded out, thermal paste and all, getting ready to Install Windows 8, but the Fan is constantly running on High.   I know some of these AMD Based Laptops the fans are always churning, so is this normal for this particular Model?   I went into BIOS Setup and "Disabled" "Fan Always On" also, which seemed to make a little difference but not much. I also wonder if/when the OS has been installed it will get better. I'm a little hesitant to Flash the BIOS as I've heard many nightmares doing this on HP Hardware, but don't know how true it actually is? Thanks, pc

It seems I have had some lag of late, and I thought it was due to a loose connection in my CD-RW....but since I have completely removed the CD-RW, as it seemed to stop the lag for a day or so, i continue to get the same thing over again...CPU constantly running resulting in lag

It isnt spyware/or a virus, as I've check into that pretty thoroughly...

To me, it sounds like the CPU is constantly running and is somewhat loud during gaming...causing lag...
Anyone's help would be appreciated?

I just got a PC from a family member for college. It's a MSI G72 7QF. I reset it to start fresh and it went smoothly. I noticed some stuttering when multi tasking so I checked task manager and saw that the CPU is always at 100%. I did all the updates and manually went through device manager making sure all drivers were updated, and nothing helped. I took a little video of the task manager.

Hi,

I have two computers, one computer runs smoothly at a cpu level of around 10%, and has less RAM, hard drive space, and runs more cpu related tasks, it has a duel core 2.4, my other computer, however, runs at 100% all the time, no matter how many processes I kill in tskmgr.exe, it runs incredibly slow, it has a duel core 2.2.

I've ran malwarebytes, CCleaner, registry cleaner, defrag, and it still runs at 100%, it didn't used to do this, it's happened for at least two months, but it keeps getting worse.

I've had my P50 for a couple of weeks now, and the fan is running at full speed pretty much constantly. Even with all applications closed, and virtually zero CPU usage. My P50 is docked in a workstation dock, and connected to an external Dell monitor via the Display Port. Running Win7 Pro, which is fully up to date, as are all the system drivers. I don't think anything is actually running hot, as the air blowing out of each end of the P50 is cold. Even if the machine has been sleeping for 12 hours (not actually shut down), the fans come on full in less than a minute of looking at the desktop, with no other activity. I'm extremely happy with the P50 overall, but this constant fan noise is getting very irritating. This surely has to be a firmware issue, and several other people on this forum have reported similar issues. My old T510 hardly ever made this much noise, and all my older IBM era laptops were silent most of the time. Certainly not what I expected when spending over 2000 on a high spec workstation. Please can someone from Lenovo figure out what's going on ? Ian.

I just bought a refurb Z50-70 from the Lenovo outlet.  Straight out of the box at startup the fan was running full blast, though the computer remains quite cool -- not warm in the slightest.  Even in sleep mode, lying on its front, the fan was running 100%.  I have the latest BIOS and have downloaded the most recent updates to the power manager.   I got this computer for a nice price and I'd hate to have to return it... Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum! Since the machine is more than likely under some kind of warranty I would avoid opening it up to see what the problem is.  If it were me,  I would just return it for replacement or repair.  The fan problem could be an indication of other things that maybe wrong with it.  Best to have it checked over.

That is usually caused by the vents that allow air to be drawn over the CPU heat sink being clogged with dust   Once the CPU gets hot, the system will slow down, and eventually just shut down to protect itself from a meltdown.     I would try using a vacuum cleaner hose and a can of computer cleaning air to blow/suck out the dust and see if that helps.     I that still fails, you may have to remove the base cover (see page 34 of the Lenovo S41/U41 Hardware Maintenance Manual) and clean the fan manually.     In rare case the heat sinks fail, or the thermal heatsink compund beween the CPU and the heat sink cracks and fails to transfer heat to the heat sink efficiently, mut most likely you will find the system is full of dust. Lenovo used to have a fan cleaning program in the Lenovo Energy Managment software, but I think it removed it for some reason.    It is supposed to run the fan backwards and forwards at high speed to try to clean the dust, but if it is really plugged, it probably will not work. Good luck. Lenovo S41/U41 S41-35 S41-70 S41-75 U41-70 Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_s41-35_s41-70_s41-75_u41-70_hmm_201503.pdf

In Windows Task Manager, under the Performance Tab, my CPU is showing at 100% permanently. I've tried closing down some of the high runner processes but nothing makes any difference.

I've run several cleaners (RegCure, CCleaner etc) but again nothing makes any difference.
My PC is constantly freezing, hanging, sputtering and is becoming unusable.

I also noticed that when I manage to perform a normal shutdown, everything goes normally BUT my screen stays on, and the power button light remains on, but I can hear the drives and fan stopping. I then have to perform a manual powerdown by holding the on/off button for about 8-10 seconds.

My machine is a 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 Compaq Presario, 18 month old, O/S is Windows XP Home Edition, with SP 2.
Anyone out there have any ideas?

I have a Compaq Presario PC, windows XP W/SP2 installed. Model # SR1503WM. The CPU constantly runs whether computer is being used or not. I have checked the task manager and it shows CPU as 0% and compaq connections agent as the only application running. I have 1.24GB of RAM installed. I have Norton installed and AVG and have checked for spyware and computer seems to be clean of any. The unit seems to be cool as it is not hot when felt or air from it, and also is free of dust clogging vents and inside of unit. What could be the problem. It is 2 years old this month. The noise runs me crazy after a while, thanks!

My CPU usage is always running at 50-55%, which it wasn't doing a week ago. When I check the "Processes" tab under Task Manager, there isn't any application/browser/programs that are taking up that cpu usage. I also ran a virus check with TrendMicro and it came up with nothing. I'd like to be able to know what is running in the background and stop it. It's making work related programs and browsing more slow.

Hi, posted yesterday re the fan on my HP running all the time, dusted the fans as per the reply but it's still blowing.

Someone who came over last night looked at a performance table somewhere on the computer and said that alot of the programs were running 99% thus setting the fan off. He didn't know any more and I can't remember how he got to that info? Help please!

I am running Vista Home Basic. I have good computer knowledge and skills although certainly not an expert. I can't understand why I am constantly getting the low C: memory warning. I store all pictures and music, etc. on a separate hard drive, and I have carefully gone over my program files and uninstalled any that didn't seem worthwhile. I have a 70 gig hard drive which seems like lots and is more than any computer I've owned before. Sometimes it seems that if I delete files, etc. to clear up memory and the next time I come back to my computer I'm out of memory again. I often get the "could not complete back up due to insufficient memory" notice. I'm unclear on what is being backed up and if this is part of the problem.

I have 3 GB of RAM and the Virtual Memory is currently set at 3242 MB

Hi and welcome to vista forums

WE could use some info on your computer like how much memory you have, but I think you are running low on "virtual memory". Virtual memory or page file is set in the system control panel>advanced settings. Dependant on the amount of RAM you have it should be set for between 1 and 2 times the amount of ram. If you run out of RAM more and more things are stored in the page file untill it too is out of space. thats when y ou get the low memory warning.

If you like I can walk you thru the settings and where to change them, just tell us how much ram you have.

Hi, I just installed Windows 10 32 bit on my T61 with Intel(R) 965. Everything is working as it should, but the only thing that worries me is the fan - it's constantly running.  Is this normal behaviour? (in which case I would be inclined to switch back to Windows 7) Or are there steps that can be taken in order to make my T61 as quiet as with Windows 7. Thus far I have turned off most of the auto-notifications; what else can be done? Any helpful suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi i mentioned this earlier but i didnt solve the problem, im running my desktop windows vista machine, and the harddrive never stops working, it sound really bad, i searches for this and someone said that you coult see what whas happening in the task manager with io reads and other io activity tabs turned on, the tasks that showing the most activity was windows tasks and the highest is avg with over 20-40k reading score i will remove avg and se if it fixes it but othervise, what should i do?

There's quite a few things that can have that effect. Let's start simple and work up.

How old is the hard drive?

I would check the overall space of the hard drive, good practice to have at least 20% free. The HD may also be fragmented, you can check the status of both of these from the disk defragment application. If the HD space is lower then 20%, you may want to delete temporary files from Disk cleanup.

Next I would check the RAM and Virtual memory amount, it depends on what system your running, but a good baseline is anywhere from 2gb to 4gb of ram, and 1.5x your current ram amount = virtual memory. You can confirm these from the Task Manager, under the Performance tab.

If those come up clean and fine, you may want to do a quick virus scan. I personally recommend Malwarebytes, you can find the most current version from their website at Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

Hey, I have the following problem: For some time now, my U41-70 throttles down to 0.48 Ghz with the fan constantly running. This behaviour is likely to something called thermal throttling or BD PRODHOT, where other hardware tells the CPU to throttle down in order to not overheat. The throttling can be circumvented using Throttlestop (or MSR on Ubuntu), but having the fan constantly running is quite unbearable. I already tried a number of things, including updating the BIOS. Unfortunately, in the BIOS there does not seem to be an option to turn of thermal throttling altogether. I also cleaned the fan, and tried to change the fan speed manually. None of these measures had any effect. My interpretation of this is that some heat sensor is broken, because the the sensors I can access rarely show a temperature above 40C. I do not have any warranty any more, so I can not just send the laptop in. If I could make out where the faulty sensor is, I could maybe exchange that part of hardware. Does anybody have an idea what part I should replace, or how else I could solve this?I run my U41-70 on Windows and Ubuntu, with the problem occuring on both. I have a 256GB SSD, an Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB RAM.

I just bought a new toshiba pc i got it last thursday and when im just sitting at the desktop the fan just kicks into high gear constantly running and making noise and then after a few minutes it stops but it also starts back up making the same annoying noise minutes later is the fan suppose to be working so constantly? I am using a HP Pavilion dv6 with an Intel i7-2630 QM, 6 GB RAM and AMD Radeon 6770M GPU (along with Intel Graphics Card). In the past few days, anytime I open a program, such as Mozilla, Chrome, Spotify, the computer's fans kick on. This has never happened in the past. Usually I have to run a video through the browser or play a game for the fans to turn on. The fan turns on when on AC power and when on battery. When this happens, the CPU usage is around 5-7% with 40-50% RAM usage (no change from the past). I am not sure why all of the sudden the laptop's fans are turning on. I have looked at the processes and do not see anything out of the norm and the average temp of the CPU's is about 51-54 C. I have not installed any new software in the past several months. Any input or ideas about why this may be happening would be greatly appreciated. I use Process Explorer and Core Temp to monitor my computer as well as Norton 360 as antivirus software. Thanks.

hello, i have tried to get this done in another forum but read a few others and thought i would get ahead of the ideas and try you first...my disk is constantly running, won't shut down...i also posted this message in the other forum:

Hello, my hard drive won't stop running, at least i can hear the fan running all the time, and now outlook won't even send anything, I took norton off as was advised here, and installed avg free, but need some help!!!

Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE

Older Fujitsu Lifebook N series notebook with Vista. Recently fans (2) both seem to operate at top speed as soon as the computer boots up, even from a cold start. Tried installing speedfan but it triggered a BSOD when scanning the hardware every time I tried to use it. Then tried Core Temp, that wouldn't install either. No BSOD, said something was blocking it, but I disabled Adaware and AVG. Laptop appears to operate normally except for the fan noise. Attached the hijackthis files. TIA.

ps...should have mentioned I took it apart, cleaned the fans (not that dirty), and re-pasted the CPU and heat sink.

Have slight problem. Want to set upone of my own photos as desktop background.
Have a couple of my own photos saved in My Pictures, under My Documents.
Worked briefly. Now, when I boot up, my A drive runs constantly, until system comes
up completely. But, as soon as I click on anything on desk top, A drive starts running
again, apparently searching for needed background file?
How/where do I save my own photos for desktop background so that A drive isn't running all the time?

I'm running a Gateway 1GHz, 40GB HD, CDRW, Iomega Zip drive and Windows ME.
If I keep a Zip disk in, with photo I want on it, Drive A is quiet.
Problem began when I tried to change desktop background.

Appreciate any information!!

I just received a new HP 22-b052 AIO yesterday and as soon as I started it up, I could hear the fan on the left side (or right side from the back) constantly running. The sound from far away is unnoticeable but when I'm in front of it, it is loud. Is this normal for HP AIO (All in One)? I called HP tech support and spent hours recovering and reinstalling BIOS, running hardware tests but to no avail.  Also, could I replace the fan? Is this PC customizable, would I be able to switch out the mobo and CPU (and of course fan)?
