Will a Headset microphone still work if I cut it off the Headset?

Q: Will a Headset microphone still work if I cut it off the Headset?

I have a almost broken headset, but the microphone still works fine, The microphone is connected on the wire right before the headset, Its not actually touching the headset itself.

Would this microphone still work if the headset was cut off?

Sorry but I can't manage to take a photo but

Preferred Solution: Will a Headset microphone still work if I cut it off the Headset?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Will a Headset microphone still work if I cut it off the Headset?

Is the microphone actually supported by the headset, by that I mean when the set is on your head is the microphone carried close to your mouth so you have both hands free. If this is the case then cutting off the headset will mean the microphone will not have any way of being held near your mouth.
If you cut it off you will have to be very careful you don't cut the wires for the microphone & it's possible that there is a common return wire for the earpieces & the microphone in the form of a shielded cable, so it would be very difficult, but if you have skills in this area it could be done.

So three days ago I wiped all of my drives and installed Windows 10. I have a Corsair Vengenace 2100 headset. I installed the realtek drivers from ASUS download section for my motherboard and then I installed the headset drivers.

The problem is that my headset does not record anything through the microphone if I set it to be the default device for audio output. If I have my other computer speakers as the default output device my microphone works just fine.

This goes for all the USBs in the back of the motherboard. The headset works just great if I plug in the wireless reciever in the front of the computer.

I have tried to reinstall the drivers multiple times and checked a bunch of different settings in the sound manager in windows but nothing seems to work.

Have also googled all kinds of things but nothing seems to relate to my problem.

I do not have any external sound card plugged into my computer.

Thanks for any help provided!

EDIT: Can be closed as I found the win 10 forum after I made the thread. Sorry!

Whenever I try to use the microphone in the headset I recently bought, it picks up no audio. The recording-device manager thimg marks it (Mic in front panel (black), as unplugged, even though it very clearly is not. I have, and use, a splitter to with both the microphone plug and actual headphones plug plugged into it, and that into the (only) audio jack on my computer, and even the USB cable on it plugged in. It doesn't do anything but make it light up; but it's plugged in because it makes me feel like I've tried even more stuff. I've tried restarting my computer, uninstalling and re-installing all the drivers related to sound, and really every suggestion the first 3 pages of Googling the problem has brought up, including using the troubleshooting for recording devices in contorl panel, which also says the problem is that it's not plugged in. Which it still is.  The painted-on label next to the actual audio jack is also labeled for a headset; the headphone icon there very clearly has a microphone stick-thing on it, and they work perfectly fine to hear through, they just don't listen. Is there anything I can do to make the microphone work?

I recently had my computer serviced. The guy wrote DIAG, Refomat & Load Windows, Install Ram 512 on the invoice.

Now my headset will not work. I called the guy and he said "I told you, you need drivers." He did NOT tell me that. My headset worked before he serviced my computer.

What is the problem?

A:Microphone / Headset does not work

Check in the bios to see if they are enabled, you should not need any drivers. If you are using the font panel jacks look to see if nay wires are loose in the case, front panel jacks are plugged into the board. You need to look at your MOBO layout to check things out, if you do not have it you can find it on the manufacturers site.

(I'm on a laptop)

So I bought a new headset the sound plays through well, but that isn't my problem the thing is It's not detected so It's not in my recording devices.

My laptop also has a build-in microphone (that doesn't show up in recording devices either).

So I can't even disable my build-in microphone, or find my headset mic so how am I supposed to make it work..?

Any solution? , Thank you for your time.

A:Can't get headset microphone to work

So what you are saying is that when you open the Sound interface and select the Recording tab, the list is empty, there is nothing there at all, completely blank even though you have a built in microphone which you can see in Devices and Printers or in Device Manager.

The microphone of my headset does not work when I plug it in my laptop. In the playback devices I can see the mic and it says active or plugged in, but when I try to speak it does not hear anything, I've tried updating the drivers, I've adjusted the microphone level to max but still nothing. When I tried to do voice record it said "Plug in microphone" but the microphone was plugged in and I can still see it in the recording devices listed as active. I really need help. Additional info I've downloaded a voice changer application earlier before this happened, is there a way to reset the recording devices?. And yes I've tried uninstalling and installing the device software.

Ive inserted a DxDiag file

Can anybody help me with the following problem ?
I have a HP ENVY 700-301nd with Win 8.1 and a Sennheiser PC 333D G4me usb-headset connected to it.
The audio (music, games) sounds perfectly, but the microphone only seems to give crackling and very distorted noises.
When I plug the headset into my older Win 7 computer, the microphone sounds crystal clear, so it's not broken.
I've been busy for quite a few hours now, but whatever I do...I can't get the microphone to work on the HP ENVY it seems.

Installing the lastest drivers from HP and Sennheiser didn't solve the problem.

So does anybody has a clue what might cause this problem and how to fix it ?

Hi here,

I just got a new computer with Vista. I'm trying to get a headset that I used on my old computer to work. The headset is a free one that came with some language learning software so there's no driver. In the sound manager, Vista detects the microphone as being plugged in - as a "Microphone/Line In - SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC", but no program notices any sound coming from it. It is set as the default microphone and it's enabled. It works on my old computer still. Is there anyone that could help me get this working?

Many thanks,

A:Headset microphone detected but won't work

Hi tjm, welcome to the vista forums

may seem a bit basic but have you checked the levels, right click on the sound icon in the tray and select recording devices - click on your microphone and check on the levels tab.

hopefully it's that simple have seen new installs with either very low or muted mic channels

This is what I am looking at. Does anyone have any experience with this software?

Do you see on the right. Things with nothing plugged into them are faded. As you can see. The microphone is plugged into the back panel. It shows up. If I remove it and plug it into the front panel that shows up. However, my computer doesn't seem to recognise the microphone. Flicking through the 3 tabbed options, none seem to provide any options for standard 'Mic In'.

Am I doing something wrong? How do I get my computer to recognise the microphone?

Edit: If I right click on the speaker icon in the bottom right tray and select recording devices. I have one listed. "Line In, Realtek High Definition Audio - Not plugged in"

I have been stuck on this for 2 weeks. I tried to disable the Line In. It disappeared. I clicked Show Disabled in the menu. The Microphone was disabled... enabled it and poof. Job done. Thanks for reading. Sorry for wasting your time

Hi, I have a d9150 with a Creative SB xF-1 soundcard. To get a reaction in the microphone I need to almost shout...I also have speakers connected, so if I use an external microphone this creates an immense echo while speaking.Does anyone have a tip on how to make it possible to use the headset/microphone...?

A:Headset and microphone doesn't work - any tips?

First, is the headset designed for PC's.  e.g. one designed for a telephone will not work or work properly  with a PC. Second you should plug the headset into the front panel headphone jack and on models with a "mic" jack on the front panel you can plug that into the front panel mic jack.  If yours only has the front panel headphone jack you will need an extension cable for the mic portion so you can plug it in to the mic jack on the rear of the PC.  When you use the front panel headphone jack it automatically mutes the speakers. Finally, there are volume controls and mute options in the Volume control panel for the microphone.  Check those settings.

Lifechat headsets require a small download from www.microsoft.com

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=ICE and select Headphone, your product, etc, and download the appropriate file! you MUST restart the computer. Then unplug it from the computer and plug it in, go to sound recorder and test it out! (make sure you click the microphone ON button on your headset button)

You're welcome

Basically I've gotten used to wearing headsets the wrong way around when gaming. This wasn't a problem unti lately I got one with a micrphone to participate in clan matches.

I play first person shooters but if I wear it the correct way i can't hear where people are located so it is vital I have to wear it round the wrong way. Of course my microphone points backwards so is totally useless.
My soundcard is a realtek high definition audio device.

I'd like to find a software fix to basically switch around the sound of the headset. So left sounds into the right and vice versa. Just simply switching the current 2 directions around so when people are on the left I hear them on the left! and if they are on the right to hear them on the right. with RealTek audio manager i can set it to 7.1 surround or just normal sterio which is 2 directional. Either way the people aren't heard in there correct place.

Please, I will greatly GREATLY appreciate if somebody can help me. I've tried various headsets and all have this problem.

The jack on the headset and my pc are all 3.5mm.

I recently purchased the G230 Logitech Gaming Headset. It is a single wired headset that splits into to jack inputs: the microphone and speaker. The speakers work fine and I can hear everything through the headset. However, my mic is not registering and the only recording device functioning is the built in laptop mic on my Alienware M15X.

Hi, I recently bought a new headset due to one of the ears falling apart...

My old one was USB with a 3.5mm cable and worked perfectly fine. The new one I got has no USB and uses the green and pink cables. I've plugged them in and it seemed as if they were working well but I realised they're not actually picking up the sound from the microphone, they're playing my computers sounds.

I looked through other forums and found people saying that it may be a driver issue, so I updated and got the Realtek HD, which then showed the Stereo Mix in my devices. Basically what's happening is that Stereo Mix and Microphone are both playing volume at the same level and acting as if they're the same. I've tried disabling Stereo and keeping Mic but it still plays the computers sounds. I've tried vice-versa too. The "Speakers" device is also playing at the same level of volume.

And then obviously since it's doing that, it's playing my computer sounds through Skype.

Basically what I want to achieve is have the headset playing sound but also be able to speak through skype without it playing the sounds I have on.

Also, there's a little switch on the cable to act as a "Mic Mute" switch, if the Mic is ON then the sound is fine, if I switch it to OFF the sound is very echo'd and distant.

A:New Headset, not detecting microphone.

First, stereo mix should be set as the default recording device. Then any input device that is used will be heard.

As Windows only allows one default audio playback device, separating sounds or what's heard may not be possible or is an option of the application program. I'm not familiar with Skype so I don't know what the options are or do.

Good afternoon all.
I just reloaded my OS over the weekend and now I seem to be having issues with my Headset/Microphone. The chief complaint is when trying to use the mic over in any app (ventrilo, ingame voip), other users say there is lots of feedback, distortion, etc.
I really have no idea what could be causing this issue. I have tried loading the latest chipset drivers for the sound device, changed settings for the mic to no avail. One thing I did find odd was when the mic is plugged in, and I have the mic volume up quite a bit, I can talk into the mic and hear what is said through my pc speakers.
Now I do not remember this happening in the past, prior to the OS reload, but I believe this is somehow related to my problem. Also, when plugging in the headset I can hear a pop in the speakers which I also found odd. The headset itself is using a RCA plug (I guess that would be the correct type). I am using a Socket 939 Abit KN8-SLI motherboard with onboard sound.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone.

I am having difficulty getting my headset to work correctly and I can't figure out what exactly the problem is. I am running WINXP Prof ver 2002.

My keyboard is a HP and plugs into both the microphone and speaker jacks in the rear of my computer, and has two jacks at the back of the keyboard for the Mic and Headset. When my computer speakers are plugged into the keyboard headset jack, they work fine.

When my headset is plugged in though, the sound comes out of one ear only and is very faint, despite me playing with volume controls and the computer software volume controls. This is a brand new headset, I replaced the old one because I had the same problem and thought it was the headset. Also, for some reason with this headset, when I plug the mic into the keyboard jack, then the speakers into the headphone jack, my voice comes out the speakers and it does that stupid screeching thing. This never happened with my old headset so I'm not sure how to tackle it.

Appreciate any help/info. Thanks.

A:My headset microphone not working

The first thing I see is you do not have the correct RealTek sound driver (what Gigabyte shows for this model) installed. All you have is the generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec driver.

Install the RealTek driver from the Gigabyte downloads for your motherboard as the first step.

It does not appear you have the correct AMD driver installed for your video card either. Go to www.amd.com and download and install the correct driver.

Considering the sound and video do not have the correct drivers, you need to take a look at all the drivers. Gigabyte provides an install disc with all the drivers and apparently that was not used. However, DO NOT install the Gigabyte EasyTune program, if its on the disc as that is known to cause problems. (EasyTune6 was supplied with my Gigabyte motherboard)

One other comment. I seriously doubt that you have 1TB of RAM (Memory). That is probably the size of your hard drive.

Hello Eightforums.

Firstly, my problem is that my headset microphone is not working correctly. As my laptop (Lenovo g505s) only has 1 audio jack, but my headset has 2 cables (green and pink), i bought a 3.5mm headset splitter adapter that splits audio output to 3.5m headphone and 3.5 mic jack. Having plugged it in, I am getting both my internal microphone sounds along with my headset microphone sounds through my headset.

This is what my volume mixer looks like right now: http://i.gyazo.com/6adf9c6e8ddf0f894ce152afc1d7a9dc.png

I am unsure what how to proceed to fixing this issue.

A:Headset Microphone not working

Oh, it seems the problem got solved.

My solution i found on the internet was to go to device manager and then under sound, video and game controllers, i uninstalled the sound drivers. (in my case, AMD High Def Audio Device and Conexant Smart Audio HD)

After both were uninstalled, I restarted my laptop. Then on boot up, the small speaker on bottom right on the desktop has a little red circle on it. I troubleshooted the problem (right click speaker, top option) and it installed something (i assume both the 2 sound drivers I had just uninstalled, since i just checked device manager after it had finished installing and both my previous sound drivers were present). And it seems to work now.

I still don't entirely understand how it worked, but that was my solution.

A:Headset Microphone not working

Looking at this headset, on a YouTube video, the mic portion plugs into the headset. Has this ever worked? If not, I would contact Creative as there may be a problem. Or, if you have access to another PC (a friend's) you could try it on that to see if it works.

As you have both on-board sound and a separate sound card, if you want to use the SoundBlaster you should disable the on-board in the BIOS. Having two can cause conflicts and things to not work. In addition Windows only allows one default audio playback device. Also, where are you plugging in? If its the front panel of the PC case, what audio do you have connected to the front panel? From the motherboard or from the SoundBlaster? Again, if you are using the SoundBlaster but have the motherboard audio connected to the front panel it won't work.

I have a Fatal1ty motherboard in one of my PC's, it is an ASRock Z77 Professional Fatal1ty.

Ok so i've been researching and i can not figure out what happened to my mic. its a logitech and I used it about 4 months ago and it worked fine. but when i try it now, it doesn't pick up anything ...it works on a computer with XP but not on mine with vista. -its plugged in the right jacks, i've tried the 2 different sets on my computer, still nothing
-I have sound through the headset speakers'
-In the "Setup Microphone" under "Speech Recognition" where you speak the sentence, the Green Bar doesnt move unless i have the Microphone Boost at max but even then it just bounces a little and doesnt pick up any sound.

-The drivers are up to date, im using Realtek HD Audio
- It's not muted, everything that says Microphone i have up
- it says the mic is working properly, ...but not so much

- i've tried everything i can think of and still nothing.

*the only thing i see that i think is different is that in "Playback" tab in the "Sound" options it only says speakers, not headset/headphones etc. Under the "Recording" tab, it has the mic there and it says its working, but its not

Can you do me a favour and right click the empty space where playback devices are shown, now click on "show disabled devices", this should bring up something called stereo mix, right click that and enable, now... With the headset on, can you hear anything from the microphone when you talk?

Also, the operating system doesn't show a headset as you're using analog jacks, it's just an audio device, it cannot detect a headset through analog jacks...

I've recently came across some issues with my headset's microphone.
I'm using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and Realtek HD Audio Manager.

The problems are the following:

- microphone recording volume is very low
- the max volume (in Realtek Manager) that I can set is about 60%, any higher and I sound like a robot, another problem here is that it doesn't stay that way
- it worked fine till a few days ago
- came across this issue before but it kinda went away on itself, sometimes the mic boost would activate and that would screw up my voice
- tried both the front panel jacks and the back panel ones, same problem

Any ideas?

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Have you tried to reinstall the sound driver?

I have a new Gigaware USB headset that mutes intermittantly when I speak. I am using it with Skype, so the person I am speaking with is missing half of what I say. It sounds to them like it is cutting in and out. I have checked all settings in audio devices. Nothing is muted, all volumes are set med to high, and each tab has the headphone choice selected. I thought it was the headphones, so I took them back and got another set, but it is still doing the same thing, so it must be the computer. Any suggestions?

I am using Windows XP.
Thank you very much for any help!

Hello,I recently bought an Aspire E5-573 and I use a new headset Sennheiser PC3 and a audio in/out splitter.I have a lot of background noise when recording - on another laptop I can just check the "noise suppression" and it works fine - but here the only enhancement options are "personal call", "recording" and "disable" - they don't solve my problem.I tried installing all the latest drivers from RealTek but I cannot get the noise suppresion option... I see this laptop is running ALC255 whereas my other one is running ALC269 ?Is there a way to get this noise suppresion option? Statis is quite significant and prevents me from making any quality recordings.Attached is a pic of what I see and what I was hoping to get....Is there a way I can change the sound effect provider to get the RealTek one and the noise suppression option?thanks in advance for your help and regards,

I've had this problem with multiple headsets--basically, the microphone picks up sounds from the headset. If the sound is loud enough to be picked up by the microphone(which is as far away as it can extend--it's built into the headset), it transmits as feedback--the louder the sound, the more painful the feedback. I'm convinced this is a problem with my onboard sound(either the quality of the hardware isn't good enough or the software is improperly configured). I'm using Realtek HD Audio drivers, up to date. As far as I can tell, i've only had this problem since I installed Windows 7.
There's also a consistent hiss sound when the microphone is transmitting(I test in Ventrilo by using two instances of myself, both transmitting and receiving the same sounds), though i've minimized it using the equalizer utility. This happens whether or not the microphone is plugged into the headset(it's detachable).

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

A:Microphone/Headset feedback

After talking with a friend, he recommended I try vent normalization(ventrilo is the only program I use where I get this reverberation) using the compressor feature and changing specific gains. This limits what my inbound volume can be--even if someone is shouting. This fixed my problem. Not only that, but I was also able to use any volume---even complete maximum volume--and get 0 reverberation/static when others speak(so even though the sound is louder than before, because of the normalization there's no reverb). The setting that worked for me was:Gain 5Attack .01Release 498Threshold -30Ratio 100Pre Delay 4Figured I'd post this if someone else ran into this problem.Ventrilo:http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php

I had the same trouble and even purchased a more up to date camera with buiit in microphone, could record and play back video with sound but had the little yellow marker in the hardware manager. I even downloaded the up to date software from the manufactures website - no difference -so I removed all the software for the camera unplugged the camera and did not reinstall from the disc - I went in to the manufactures site and redownoaded the exact update that I had taken down after installing the disc that came with it and set up as prompted - camera to the usb etc and it installed and I have it working perfectly. Running Vista ultimate 32 bit -
Hope this may help
