I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have tried to do every moves I found from here and other places in the net. There is no connect to satellites. Drivers are OK and Device Manager seems to be fine also....I have put the SIM-card to the right place (no in use). What else can I do?

Hi Folks,I recently bought a refurbished Lenovo T420 which is a very nice piece of Kit, I am Hard of hearing and mostly use headphones for audio. However, this T420 seems to have something else other than the 3.5mm combo socket in place, on the right corner panel, just before the CD tray. The company I bought it from indicated that it should not be there and they suggested I try to  "Pry it out with a needle"?.Obviously I'm not going to do that untill I know what this is and why its there? I cannot connect normal head phones because there is no 3.5mm socket. Can anyone identify what this is please?3.5mm socket should be here

I went through the different steps mentioned in "clean-up-factory-bloatware" article, apart from last point which consists of re-installing my machine! But still I have BSOD and it drives me crazy.

I attached the DM Log Collector results. Hope you'll be able to find what causes this.

My laptop LCD has been out for awhile and I've been using with an external monitor, but I decided to fix the LCD so I ordered a new LCD screen for it. The lcd screen arrives, install it and picture still doesn't show up. I then thought maybe I just had a bad cable from motherboard to LCD so I replaced that.. still no luck.

I can see a faint image in the background, but it's very dark. Same with my original screen.

What's odd is before my original laptop would show a just scrambled picture of black and white-- which is why I originally thought it was LCD.

What would the next step be? To order a inverter? Do the symptoms above sound like it's a bad inverter?

Hello, I've owned this Lenovo T420 for 8+ months. I have been receiving random BSODs monthly, starting a couple months back, before then, I dont remember having them ever. More recently it has become weekly. Some days there is more than one. Today I've had 6. A couple of them occurred randomly just browsing on Chrome. Twice after I was connected remotely to a clients VM software. Then a couple times just booting up.

Currently I am connected to another client via RDP, browsing, and haven't had any issues for past hour.

I've ran the dm logger tool instructions and am attaching zip to this thread.

The only virus scanner I use is malwarebytes free and don't have any active ones. I've disabled windows updates because I've had issues with them in the past on this laptop.

Thank you,

A:Lenovo T420 Random BSOD Occuring

Hi Daimyo21,

Welcome to the 7forums

If you have only Malwarebytes as protection, please install Microsoft Security Essentials
The software from Malwarebytes is NO Anti-Virus program and is not meant to run single on a system as AV.

Please install all updates from Windows Update available and check Lenovo for BIOS updates.

Hi I am new to this community, so I would like to applogise if I mist a simillar subject (I did check some but non resolved my problem). I have a thinkpad t420, I bought a used one. It worked great, and I bought it from a friend, that I trust. I installed a ssd drive, was usnig Linux, and everything worked for one month. But then I bought a HDD caddy, and replaced the CD rom. After that my thinkpad worked for a day (although it didnt recognize the second HDD). The next day I tried searching BIOS for some settings, and after restarting my laptop it was stuck on Lenovo splash screen, rebooting in a loop. I tried:- removing and replacing the caddy with the CD rom,- replacing my SSD drive,- replacing RAM (both slots),- reseting BIOS,- running a diagnostic CD (but it will not boot, neither can I boot from an USB) My google search showed that it could bi a problem with one of the USB pins inside of one of the ports (short circuit or something like that), but I could not finde any damage. So I am thinkig that the motherboard could be damaged, but I can access BIOS, but that is the only thing I can do with it. I would be wery thenkful for any advice or help, before I go to an official Lenovo service for help. Thnak you! Z.

A:T420 stuck on Lenovo splash screen

Hi Zjaz123456,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with not booting to OS on your ThinkPad T420.
Is both HDD &SSD detecting in BIOS?
Check with removing CMOS battery, make sure you have disconnected the system from AC adapter and battery is removed.
Remove both the drive & battery from the system, disconnect the power adapter. Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 sec perform this step for 2 to 3 times and then connect only the drive which is having OS installed in it. Use only power adapter to switch ON the system.
Hope this helps. Do post us back for further assistance!
Best regards,

Hi guys, I just spilled a glass of water on m Lenovo T420 laptop. I immediately turned it off and kept it upside down for a while and haven't turned it on for 8 hours now. Is there something I should do to avoid damage? E.g. how long should I wait and  should I do something to dry it more? Help appreciated! Thanks,Joel

A:Water spillage on Lenovo T420 keyboard

Hi Lenoovoo,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
I would rather that you remove the battery and take it to a service center for general cleaning informing them of the immediate concern about the water spill. Do not attempt to power it on as tools may be needed to safely dry it up internally avoiding other issues.
How to Locate a Repair Center or Service Provider
If you have such skill and tools then you can use the hardware manual here a reference guide.

The free upgrade to win 10 pro failed several times.  I checked the web for problems and as a result uninstalled malwarebytes, antivirus, some drivers and some Lenovo stuff that popped up.  Finally the upgrade using the Media tool was successful.  Win 10 pro is now working on the T420.  However, only the Lenovo Companion is installed.  I bought a Yoga with Win10 pro and it came with Lenovo Companion, Settings and Account.  I have been trying to find a way on the Lenovo site to download the Settings and Account programs, but no luck.  Any suggestions?  (Probably a simple solution and I am just missing something obvious....)

Lenovo T420, Type 4177-CTO. Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit.  8 GB RAM,  500 GB HD, third party 128 GB SSD added. After inspecting many laptops I chose the ThinkPad T420. The only better laptop was Apple and I needed different software. An important consideration for any computer is support. Lenovo has excellent support at 1-800-426-7378. Tech support and repair happens right here in the United States.  Repairs are done in Tennessee. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a solid laptop. It is not as light as some laptops but strength and durability need to be considered. Weight of machine with a large 6 cell battery and a slice battery = 6 lb. 7 oz. (3060 kg). The laptop weighs 5 lb. 5 oz. (2430 kg) with just the large 6 cell battery. The 6 cell battery weighs 1 lb. 1.5 oz. (500kg) and the 6 cell battery would then weigh 1/3 less. You can compute the difference. Keep in mind my battery life with the slice battery installed is about 17 hours. The slice battery also places the laptop on a slight angle with the rear elevated. It is about the same tilt as with the docking station. You cannot have the slice battery installed while the laptop in in the docking station. The 6 cell battery sticks out the back so it is not a perfect cosmetic fit. The 4 cell battery will look nicer, be lighter and probably last about 4 hours. The overall design is perfect in my opinion. I find no problems. For updating my T420 in Lenovo support website, I installed the Lenovo Service Bridge. However, my security software detected it as a malware and deleted some files. Then every time the laptop starts, there will be a couple of pop-up windows (see lingks below), which is the same when I click the service bridge installation file. Actually, it's not a blacklist, but a whitelist.Anyway, I suggest flashing this modified BIOS version: https://www.sendspace.com/file/0whb9r
In addition to the removed whitelist, it has several other advantages over the original BIOS.

I just purchased an adapter plug that allows me to connect my Lenovo/IBM thinkpad (T420) to my HDTV by plugging the HDMI cord into my TV and the other end to this adapter plug which converts the HDMI cable into a male plug which fits into my display port (there is no HDMI port on this model computer). It worked, but now I can't remove the adapter plug...it's stuck in the laptop display port. I do not know if the problem is caused by the male adapter plug or the female jack in the computer, but they're locked together now.

I have previously read review comments (on these HDMI/display port adapter plugs) mentioning this jamming happening on more than a couple occasions, but I don't recall any resolutions being mentioned except to break off (and destroy) the plug and possibly damage the display port as well. I called Lenovo tech support but they said I'd have to mail the computer to them to get it fixed. I'd prefer avoiding that if possible even though my warranty is still in effect and it would be of no cost to me.....just time lost without a computer.

I'd greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may be aware of how to resolve this problem (and also how to avoid it happening again) without doing damage to either the plug or especially the computer display port.

Thanks for your consideration in any case....

Have you tried to update the BIOS yet?  If not, that would be a good place to start.  You can also try pulling the battery out while having the laptop plugged in and see if you get the same results.  If so please let us know.

Since you have to hunt around different Lenovo sites (and other sites) to find out about these softwares, I decided to make a post to get feedback from actual Yoga owners on how these programs interact, what they do, which ones are prerequisite, and which ones are unnecessary. Please don't take this as a blanket answer. This is just what I have found. It might be right - it might be wrong. I'm looking for others to post their experiences as well. Lenovo System Interface Foundation Driver - Necessary prerequisite (missing driver in device manager without it). It allows the Lenovo Utility and Lenovo Companion to work. Lenovo Yoga Mode Control - Necessary if you want to use your yoga to seemlessly change between all the different modes (laptop, tablet, tent, stand). This software is responsible for autorotating and putting Windows into tablet mode. Lenovo Utility - Recommended(?) This one I'm not too sure on. I remember that I was missing some function that I wanted but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe battery cycle count and health? Lenovo Companion - I don't have this one installed and don't think it's necessary but would like someone else to shed some light here.

Just purchased a reconditioned T420, and was happy to find the memory slot on the back of the notebook open, but when I opened the back up I noticed these two wires just to the left of the open memory slot. I know it is not the best picture (its a screen capture if an instrctional video on adding memory), but you can see the part that I am talking about. How to you attach images?Hopefully you can follow the links to see the pictures I am talking about.

A:What can go here - T420

Hello and welcome,
Have a look at page 75 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T420, T420i
That slot can take a WWAN card (those are the antenna cables) or an mSATA SSD.  I run a 256GB SSD in mine with an HDD in the normal drive slot.  It's a nice combo.

A few threads on this but nothing seems to cover my problem. Briefly:

1. I'm using a so far trouble free home build, quad core, 8GB DDR2, desktop running W7 Pro 64 whos main function is editing photgraphic images. I have 4 WD internal HDDs (2x 150 GB, 1x25GB and 1x 1TB) and an external USB3 (via a card) linked 1TB WD External drive.
2. The System drive carries only the OS and Appl. software. All other files are on the 250GB drive which is running out of space. The remaining drives are used for back up, Photoshop scratch disk and archiving.
3. I have consequently bought and tried to install a 2.0TB WD Caviar Black (WD2002FAEX) to replace the 250GB.
4. On boot up, the system successfully installs the driver.
5. The drive is recognised in the BIOS set up, in "Disk Management" and the Device Manager confirms that it is functioning properly, ready for use and that I have the latest driver.
6. Despite all this the usual "needs to be initialised message" doesn't appear and right clicking the partition area for the disk in Disk Management doesn't offer an option to start the initialisation process (not for this drive or any drive for that matter).
7. I have tried de-installing and re-installing after a re-boot with the same result. I have also tried connecting the drive to another SATA port but to no effect.
8. If I reconnect the old drive, the system performs normally and so I don't think that there is a motherboard or connection problem.

I have reached the p... Read more

Hi there,

I keep getting an error message, " c:\windows\system32\guard.tmp dll initilization routine failed " message when i log on to a user account that is not the administrator. I don't know what the guard.tmp file is for. it's around 240Kb, and i'm reluctant to delete it from my computer because i don't wan't my computer to crash completely. i recently did a ad-ware/spy-ware removal so i'm not sure if that has something to do with it or not. I also removed a couple of processes from the task manager on my administrator, so i'm not sure if that may have anything to do with it. but then, it shouldn't affect the other user accounts, right? if anyone has any clear thoughts and as to what i should do to correct this problem, it would be great!!!

One of the hard drives on my raid 5 server has failed. The engineer replaced but now we cant see the shares that was on the original drive.

Anyone know what disk initialization will do? Will it wipe the data underneath the container?

A:Disk Initialization

Cant remember which protection method RAID5 is but, i believe initialization is neccessary to make that new disk part of the recovery method, like if it were part of a Stripe set, volume set etc... so i would say you have to initialize your new Disk make your RAID setup work. (google it)

How ya doin? I think its a groovy thing y'all do to help folks out for free.

Couple of quick connection-related questions for yaw.

1. I am trying to dial into a free ISP from my office. I have been through the wringer with the ISP's tech support for 4 days now. Here's a summation of the problem.

I have to first dial 99 to get an outside line before the modem will dial the 7 digit access number.
The error I get says initialization failed. Same error message probably 50 times in a row now.
My modem is working properly because I can dial any number where a human answers with my software phone dialer and it connects and I hear the caller. The line I am using is a fax line.
All my network settings are fine, as well as my property sheets for the modem, dial-up networking, etc. This was confirmed by the tech support guys I have conversed with this week.

In short, I have ruled out modem and software issues as the problem. The only thing left to find out is how to get the ISP to initialize once the connection is authenticated. It will verify the user ID and password and then say its authenticating, and then the error message comes up. Herein lies the problem. The guy told me this morning that he has had an issue with folks trying to dial remote computers from hotel rooms and offices where an outside number has to be reached by first dialing 9 or 99.

My question then is how do I connect? Are there any extra settings I can use? I even asked the support guys here an... Read more

I'm having very slow startup times with my Win 7 64 bit system (it has been happening since before installing SP1). It takes 2 to 3 minutes to startup and I see the Ethernet link initialization taking up most of the this. The link icon will have the "circle" wait symbol on it for over 1 minute before the link comes active and while it's on "wait" nothing else appears to be initializing as Microsoft Security Essentials icon stays red and none (two) of the sidebar comes up (I have a weather and the "All CPU" meter).

I have a separate hard drive on this PC with Vista 32 bit and it does not have the excessing startup time with Vista - the Ethernet link activates almost immediately.

I'm using a Linksys router but it's not the router as I've connected the RJ45 directly to the cable modem and it acts the same.

Whether it's the link activation that is causing the delay or some other process?? I have a relatively vanilla system and not much is in the startup. I've disabled some start up items in msconfig and that didn't help anything. I've reinstalled the Intel NIC drivers and also let Windows install drivers for the NIC and that didn't help.

In the notification area, I have Volume Control, Network Connection, Microsoft Security Essentials, Win Patrol, Epson Event Manager, Malwarebytes and "safely remove hardware" icon (because of an iLock key). I've disabled Win Patrol, Epson Event Manager, Malwarebytes and MIcrosoft Security Essent... Read more

Hi Fireberd,

Install and Run free Soluto.

Once you reboot after installation, it presents a very easily understood graphic showing all the components that load during boot, as well as how long each one takes (example shown in image below).

This might help find out what is causing your long startup time.

See this video to see how it works - its pretty neat:
