Can't open any folders in Windows Explorer with double click

Q: Can't open any folders in Windows Explorer with double click

Like my title read, I can't open any folders in my Windows Explorer with a double click. It gives me the error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." This also happens whenever I try to open any drives, such as C: drive. I can however run programs from Windows Explorer, and can right click, then choose open to open folders.

I have already done extensive searching on the subject, tried deleting autorun.ini files, tried some registry fixes, with no luck. I'm obviously running Windows 7, 32-bit, on a HP desktop.

Preferred Solution: Can't open any folders in Windows Explorer with double click

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Can't open any folders in Windows Explorer with double click

This may not be the best solution, as I am sure others may have a better solution, but it might work.

Go to start

type cmd into the search bar

right click cmd.exe and choose run as administrator.

Type the following. SFC /SCANNOW and press enter.

See if it finds any errors.

Example I am looking at a full window of folders with five coloumns of folders. If I double click on a folder in any coloumn except the far left coloumn, all of the coloumns move to the left by one coloumn space. Reseting file and view settings does not
fix the problem. I have seen this on Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Enterprise. It does not matter if it is on a domain or not or if a group policy is setting the home page.
This means I have to click twice as many times to open a folder in list view and that is the view I really want to use. Clicking twice as many times is also not good for carpel tunnel. This happens on my home and work computers and I have seen it on other
Windows 7 computers. Neither does the reg hack for MIUs or something similiar to that.

A:Windows 7 Explorer in list view moves coloumns of folders to left when you double click folder to open it

That’s a by design feature, but you can apply view settings to all folders of the same type. Here are
the detailed steps:
1. Open a folder and make changes as you like.
2. Press Alt to display the menu bar. Click Tools -> Folder options.
3. Click View tab.
4. Press the "Apply to folders" button.
5. Click Apply and click OK.
Note: The "Apply to folders" settings apply the current view setting to all folders that are optimized for the
same content as the folder you have open. This setting will not apply to the folders which is not the same type.

Hope that helps.

I'm hoping that somebody has seen this issue and can help. I'm running RC 7100 and it's working great. The one problem I have occurs consistently after the machine has been running for about 24 hours. Suddenly you can no longer open files / folders or start programs by double clicking on the icon.

It works when first booted, then stops. If you reboot it works again.

I tried changing the options such that you can open with a single click, and it didn't fix the problem.

Anyone else seen this? Any known solutions?

My computer recently froze, and after rebooting it I can no longer double-click to open up any folders on my hard drive. Instead, after 1-click a search/command prompt opens up, and I must manually click 'open' to execute the program. Right-clicking does absolutely nothing at all--no search/command prompt or copy/edit function.
Here's what I've done so far:
1) I have checked my mouse settings. the preference for double-clicking is on, and I slowed the speed down as well.
2) I have run AVG anti-virus as well as Trend Micro and nothing has come up. (I also ran an online virus scan at Pandasecurity.com)
3) I have updated/run Spybot and again, nothing unusual.
4) I tried the following solution at dougknox: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...older_open.htm
and still nothing.
5) I tried a system restore to a few days prior, and again nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a permissions issue. Try running security task manager and possibly a vundo fix afterwards. I'd also try creating another account and see if that works.

When I attempt to open folders in Windows XP by double-clicking - it instead gives me the option to rename the folder.

To go around this problem, i changed the folder option to single-click to open folder. But by doing so, i am not able to double-click to open subfolders within my Front Page website folder. Nor am I able to highlight multiple files/folders to drag to move or copy.

Therefore, I need to go back to double-click to open folders/files option.

How can this be corrected? Please advise!

I have a problem regarding double click to open folders. Besides from folders, I have no problems with double clicking. To open a folder I have to right click and chose "Open" as the default is "Explore". When I double click I recieve the following message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

I've looked at the Default Programs, but can't find what file extension the folders have and where I find to associate them with "Open". Though I do believe it's a registry fault/corruption, but I'm not entirely sure.

I've had this problem for a week or two and the only application I can think of that I've installed would be msn. I also did a windows update to SP 1, though that was after I already had this error. I'm currently using Windows 7 Enterprise SP1.

Do you guys have any idea what could be wrong and how I fix it?

Thanks for help in advance.

I recently deployed a new Windows 7 Professional 64-bit desktop.
However, I can no longer double click to open folders -- it mysteriously stopped working.  I can (a) single-click + enter, (b) single click + Open icon or (c) single click + right-click > Open... all 3 of these will open folder.  Double click
does not work.
I have:

Verified I am current on all Microsoft patches Checked all relevant settings;  Folders are definitely set to double click to open (setting them to single click to open does work OK)
Re-associated Folder, Drive and Directory associations by merging the registry fixes as recommended on several sites, such as these:
Created a new user profile without success sfc /scannow as Administrator assoc Folder=Folder from Administrator shell

Thanks for any guidance.

This may have been covered before but in multiple searches here and via Google, I have once again failed to find the answer...

This happens to me every time I get a new computer with XP or reinstall.

I much prefer the older Windows 98 or NT style of single click to select and double click to open folders in the Tree view (left panel) of Windows Explorer. I know it is possible to achieve this, because I have done so on other computers, but I am once again bludgeoning a copy of XP Home (SP3) into a shape that I am happy with and cannot for the life of me remember how to achieve my desired behavior. If it matters, the current recalcitrant computer is a Dell Inspiron 8200. My other computer that is behaving as I want this one to, is a home brew hardware with XP Pro SP3...

To summarize, by choosing Windows Explorer Tools|Folder Options|General|Click Items as Follows|Double-Click to Open an Item, I do get half of the behavior that I want:
In the right hand pane of Windows Explorer, to open a file or folder I have to double click. However, in the left hand pane (Tree View) I am still stuck with point to select and single click to open. My objection to this behavior is that I tend to use MANY nested folders for organization and having the parent folder always open often obscures another folder that I want to have visible at the same time (say for moving or copying files).

Any questions will be gladly answered and any suggestions for solutions will be immediately te... Read more

First, I apologise, but this is a bit lengthy as I am not very familiar with windows (more a mac person), and I'm not sure what level of detail is necessary.

I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.

I have a feeling I may have done this to myself when I was trying to get rid of the spyware (or whatever it was) before I sucked it up and spent half my rent money on a new subscription to Norton...

When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.

I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions &... Read more

Correct. "Folder Options" refers to Windows Explorer. The "folders" within a program, like WLM, are under the control of the program. However I noticed that my version of WLM (2009) behaves the way you want without the "Reading" pane turned on. If I turn it on then a single click shows the email in the reading pane. If I turn it off, it takes a double click to open the email to view it. The reading pane is controlled via the "Layout" Viewing option.

Hello guys, this is my first ever post on this forum. Thank you very much for taking your time to support me.

So I've been using this Asus K401L with Windows 10 installed for over 3 weeks and it's been working perfectly. Yesterday, my touchpad started to act strange and I was unable to double tap to open folders/icons. It is very strange because, I can double tap and move the touchpad and select all, and even single tap works. It's just that, I can't double tap and open folders. I plugged in my external mouse and I had no issues.
I tried repairing Asus Smart gestures, playing around with mouse properties, but nothing seems to work and I still can't open anything that requires double tap. I can even double tap on an icon and drag in anywhere using touchpad. Double tap to launch/open isn't working and that's the problem.

NOTE: My laptop doesn't have Elan Settings in mouse options.

Things I did yesterday : Using Eclipse, Changed "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\System Settings" and changed what closing the lid does to "nothing" and after some time I reverted it back to "sleep" and I installed COD Ghosts, which took almost 2 hours to archive.

Hope you guys will help me to fix this issues. Thank you very much

I have a strange problem that has been occurring since I very first installed Windows 7 x64 fresh. Whenever I click on the primary C drive in Explorer (or any other CD, card reader, or network mapped drive), sometimes 1 new window will open up, sometimes 2 new windows will open up, and sometimes 3 new windows will open up. The new windows usually, but not always, have an address bar. Explorer just seems to randomly open multiple windows at will.

I've been searching and searching online, trying various Tools->Folder Options as well as registry settings, but nothing seems to work. All I've found is a couple other forum posts with the same problem (random amount of multiple windows opening), but no resolutions.

This doesn't happen on any of my other Windows 7 x64 computers. The main difference I can think of is that this is the only machine I have with an SSD, but I can't see how that would effect all drives in Explorer.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix this? I would like no new windows at all to open up.

Hello! I have recently noticed a weird bug that double clicking SOME personal folders and subfolders of the main Windows 7 libraries (documents, music, pictures, videos) does not open them immediately in the Windows Explorer main window. I'm not getting any error messages--it seems like Windows is trying to process the double click command because I see the "blue circle waiting symbol". However, nothing happens after the symbol disappears. Opening the problematic folder through right-clicking doesn't work either. The only way I can open the problematic folders is through the context menu map on the left that includes libraries, homegroup, computer and network. This is a less efficient method that I don't like and I never have had to do this before. Is there any way that windows explorer can be refreshed or reset without losing any data? I have anti-virus software, system mechanic and cc cleaner and they didn't see any major problems with my system. Thanks!

I've been working on my grandfather's computer for a day or so now, trying to figure this problem out.
My sister's friends downloaded all sorts of games from obviously not very good sites. I don't live here, so I'm not sure exactly what she did, but it messed up the computer pretty good!

I've had several problems with it (some I've solved), but the biggest that NOTHING has seemed to fix is that the desktop icons will not open when double-clicked. Neither will the folders in Windows Explorer. I can right click on all of them, and they give me the option to "Open" and then they open just fine. (Last night, I could double click on My Documents, My Computer, and the Recycle bin and they would open (from the desktop), but now NONE of them work.)

I have looked for help all over, have tried several different things (including using this for .exe and short-cut behaviors: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm)

I cannot do a system restore, as I've tried several times and none of the points want to work.

When double click on folders I get the pop up window with the message;
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.
But if I right click on the mousse and choose "open" the folder opens without problems.
The same problem occurs if in the place of "open" I choose "explore"
Could someone tell me what's going on, how can I fix this behavior?

A:double click on folders doesn't work

Hello Jetzimoon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if downloading and merging the Folder and Directory options in the tutorial below may be able to fix this after a restart. They restore the default associations for these.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

Hope this helps,

My Issue:

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. Upon turning on the computer and booted up I got a notification window stating that Windows had been updated and restarted (turned off). At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. After several attempts, eventually it resulted in a continuous reboot, window would repeatedly restart. If I can remember correctly, in the process I got some prompts then eventually a dreaded blue screen perhaps something about windows couldnt find or load a file, i think it had a .dll extension. Well, in conclusion, thats when I decided to perform some tech procedures, check boot sequence, BIOS, the usual troubleshooting. Threw in the Windows XP for a Install repair. After having done the XP repair option it seemed to have made progress beacause I... Read more

WOw. Weird problem going on here. I have no idea what may have caused this, but anyway, basically what is happening here is that now whenever I double click a music file from my "my music" folder nothing happens. It goes to the little hourglass thingy like its thinking for a split second and then nothing happens. The file won't open.

So this was pissing me off. I have no idea why I can't open my music files in a simple manner any longer.

The other thing is that they will open fine if WMP (my default player) is already open. If WMP is just sitting there in the background and I double click an audio file it opens without a problem, but if nothing is open and I double click on an MP3 it does nothing.

What's Going On Here???

Here is my problem, for around 2 weeks :
When I double-click on a drive or folder, it opens it in another window, but explore in the same window if I right click then Explore.
Around the same time I noticed other problems, may be linked :
- I can't do anything in the account manager (there is the shield in front of the links like 'change my password and I can't use it and I can't open the parents contol in Configuration tools)
- In pictures directory, thumbnails appear then diseappear (to the default image icon)
- I experienced some problems copying folders.

My actions until now (some found in forums):
- Of course the option 'open in a single window' is selected (i deselected, applyed, reselected, rebooted ....)
- I tried to restore but it didn't work, may be the restoration point wasn't old enough, even i choosed the oldest one.
- I could create a new account on dos, to check if the problem would occure : it did :(
- I changed in regedit values HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Directory/Shell default to none (idem for Folder and drive), It didn't work, I also tried 'open' or 'explore' but no change, I checked the explore/command but it looks ok, and I guess it is since the right click/Explore is working fine.
- I ran the command : regsvr32 /i shell32.dll, it din't change anything either.
- I checked my drives with updated anti-virus and anti-malware (Avira + spybot + malwarebyte) and also ran Ccleaner and others ...

So Windows is not making the click sound whenever I open a folder. I went to the Sound options at the "sounds" tab where all the Windows sounds are, and I looked for "Windows Explorer" and then "Start Navigation" but there are no sounds to choose from, It's empty. Any idea of what's wrong? Thank you if you reply i appreciate it.

A:There's no sound (click) when I open folders on Windows 7.

Hello Anna and welcome to Seven Forums.

See if Option Two (change sound events in registry editor) shows Windows Explorer.

When I try to open one of My Folders (One that I added to my desktop with application I added to it) with a double left click a search results window opens instead of the folder opening and displaying the contents of the folder with things I've put into it.
If I right click on one of my folders and go down and left click on open the folder will open and the contents displayed as I expect (The first opetion displayed is a search after I right click).
Any other folder including My Documnets folder will open the folder and display the contents correctly.

At one time it used to work correcly and its not a major issue but I would sure like it fixed > Any ideas?

This may take a long time to complete, and when it is done it will restart your computer. When the computer restarts and you have logged on as the administrator a Restoration Complete page will appear, click on OK to complete the process.

My roommate first mentioned she was having problems with the cursor in her word attachments from emails. She asked me to see what I could. After a hour of so of searches, I was able to fix her problem by deleting the Word DataApp folder.

Then I wanted to clean up her laptop for her (Toshiba running Vista Home). I ran a checkdisk which took forever and analyzed for defragment, which turned out to not be necessary....I could not access my defragment tool via my usual right-click on C: properties, tools, etc. because anytime I right-clicked on C: I got a "Explorer could not work" and "has to restart", time and time again, no matter what option I chose in the right-click menu. So I ended up finding an indirect route to analyze/defragment through the help menu.

This right-click menu problem led me to more internet searching and I found shellview references, but that was no help either. Then I figured there is something really wrong with this computer.

Next I wanted to run a spybot check but had many difficulties installing it (had to "run as administrator") but even then I was unable to download updates so it was impossible to run a check for problems.

So here I am in your forum. I have followed the 5 steps, and you'll notice that HiJackThis could not install via step 5.

I have pasted 2 text files: Panda export and main export from Deckards
I have attached extra.txt from Deckards

Hello tallard,

If you still require assistance, I am not seeing any installed Anti Virus program. Here are 2 very good free Antivirus products which are available: Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic.

Select one of these, or another of your choice. Download, install, update definitions, and run a full system scan.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Link 1

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. If you are unsure how to do this, please see this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

A:Windows 7 Explorer 0xc000000 crash when I right-click certain folders

Go through the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Some of the steps require that you open up your system, so before doing any of the re-seating and connection checking steps, answer these two questions: Are you still under warranty? Does your warranty allow you to open up the machine to check hardware? If you are unsure of the answers to these questions, contact your system manufacturer. WARNING: Some steps in that tutorial involve removing the system case or system panels and can void your warranty!!!
The steps specifically related to the warning are steps 8, 10, and 11.
