[SOLVED] Display Settings Stuck at 16

Q: [SOLVED] Display Settings Stuck at 16

I have a 433mz Celeron with 128mb RAM running Win98SE. I cannot get the display settings to give me anything better than 16 colors (the other option is 2 colors!!) and a 640x480 screen size. I ran a Belarc and have a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) and a Sylvania F96 monitor. I've downloaded the latest drivers for each -- the graphics adapter is from Microsoft from 4-23-99 and the monitor driver is from Sylvania from 1-14-02.

I've also tried removing the display adapter and monitor and reinstalling them completely.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: [SOLVED] Display Settings Stuck at 16

the standard pci graphics adapter only allows 16 colors.

we need to get your video drivers reinstalled.

what make and model video card do you have?

if you have onboard video, we will need either the make/model of your computer or the model number from your motherboard to find the correct video drivers for you.

if you have an actual video card, pull it out and look at it and tell us the make./model and we will find the drivers for you.

A downloaded screen saver was installed on this computer and then uninstalled and now the display is horrendous. It is stuck on 16 colors and 640x480. Kinda like it is in safe mode but it is not. I don't know how to get the driver back or where it even is. Can this be fixed without the 2000 CD because I can't find that either!?! Any help would be appreciated.

Hello! I found this forum and really hope someone might be able to help me!

I have an old Packard Bell iMedia PC running Windows XP Media Centre edition. About a year ago I started having display problems, the monitor would go black suddenly and then switch back on. This started happening more and more frequently until I was forced to login in safemode, grab all my vital files, and then reinstall windows. This didn't help. After reinstalling the computer developed a new problem, it would start up with the display set to 4bit at 640 resolution and nothing I could do would change that. At this point a friend kindly gave me his old (legal) copy of WIndows XP Professional SP3 as he was migrating to Windows 7 and I used that to repartition my hard drive and reinstall windows. After the install I found my computer worked perfectly again (registration completed successfully), until I restarted it - it got stuck at absolute minimum resolution again.

I have since replaced the harddrive with a Seagate 500gb, once again it worked perfectly until I restarted it where it got stuck at minimum again. I went into the display settings menu and used the troubleshooter, it told me to open the advanced menu and click on monitor tab, but I couldn't access Preferences.

Can anyone help? My computer looks like it's stuck in safemode, though it isn't!

this is a strange one to me...

the hdwe is a hp "minitower" athlon processor, embedded nvidia vid, fairly fast and responsive on a good day.
I worked on this system a year ago, obsessively, setting up Vista as well as is possible - lean/clean/stable.
recently the primary user account, upon logging in, gets a "noise" display on the monitor that looks like an inability to sync.
I shall not rule out the possibility that an "extortion-ware" malware is causing this but extensive checks don't show any malicious thingies. There is a lightly used, tech-support second user account that logs in fine.
I set the display properties on the troubled account, the display looked normal again, but after a couple of days of use, the bad display issue is back.

is this a known issue? video refresh rate anomaly ??? why would it be "fine" for a year, then suddenly develop the problem? debug steps?

I worked on it 2 weeks ago and it was fine when I finished, now in the ditch again so I'm fishing for new debug steps to try and determine what exactly causes it to go non-linear...

thanks for your suggestions

I have hidden folders on my computer that I want to view. The odd thing is that it is already selected as view hidden folders in the folder options menu. No matter how I change the settings it is stuck on show hidden files, but it does not show them. I have also tried to restore defaults and it sets it to show hidden files. I pretty sure that show hidden files is not the default.

Hi all,
I am running XP on a Sony Vaio and i think i am having issues with my display settings.
Is it right that i should have 2 displays showing in display properties - 1 is multiple monitors on Nvidia and 2 is default monitor on Nvidia?
The reason i ask is because i tried to update my video driver and ever since the screen quality has never looked as sharp as it used to.
I went onto my desktop pc and that has only 1 monitor showing.
I tried to delete one of the displays in device manager but it keeps coming back.

Hi. I have a Vaio VGN-AR51M laptop running Vista. Thick, wavy horizontal lines have appeared all across the screen. The lines are pink (against a white background) or green. My display settings are stuck in the lowest resolution and the lowest colors (4 bit). I used to be able to connect to my TV using an HDMI cable, but I can't do that now. DivX and Adobe plugin have stopped working, so I can't play videos. And when I shut the lid, the laptop no longer goes into sleep mode. I've had the laptop 2.5 years and never had this problem until now. The problem exists even in safe mode.

Here is my SysInfo:
OS Version: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium , Service Pack 2, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz, x64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 13

According to Device Manager, my Display Adapter is the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter and it is working properly. But I thought I had an nVidia graphics card, possibly GeForce 8400M GT. Should this be showing up in Device Manager?

Hi all,

I have a pretty annoying problem with my Windows Vista since a few days.

I deleted the Recycle bin by a mistake (click on "delete" instead of "empty..."). This is not the first time it happens and I know what to do:

- Right click on the desktop
- click on Personalize
- in the "Personalization" window click on the link "Change desktop icons" that appears on the left
- then change icons...

My problem is that nothing happens when I click on "Change desktop icons". The computer does not react at all...

I tried to click on the other options in the same menu... some work but not all. "Theme", "Display settings", "Desktop icons" are irresponsive whereas "Desktop background" or "Window color and appearance" work well.

I googled the problem but none of the available solution work for me...

- no virus or spyware detected (I ran two different anti spyware and one antivirus)
- no missing key in the registry
- no problem with the rights (I am admin on this account)
- sfc /scannow does not indicate any problem...

So if any of you has an idea... I really would like to understand what is happening !

Thanks in advance.

I opened the computer, and suddenly, i am on the lowest settings, and cant go further. 640x480, with 4 bits of color.

I have a 8600GT Gigabyte video card.

Checked drivers, and reinstalled them: same problem. And the video card is detected and "properly working".
Checked directx through dxdiag: all ok except that Direct3D was not available (don't know why).

I ran the computer on the motherboard vga card, and it's ok. So i guess this is not a software issue.

I just installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 (32 Bit) onto my Compaq Presario S7500uk. I installed some of the necessary programs and updates that were displayed when it told me too restart my computer.

Before I restarted it, my settings were on the highest color quality (32 Bit) and screen resolution of 1024x768 Pixels.

When my computer had rebooted, I noticed all of the icons had become huge, and the color on screen was all dotty and not the correct color in places.

When I Right click and select properties/settings, I'm able to change the settings back to the way they are, but when I press apply, they return to the settings 640 x 480 and the color settings are at the lowest possible.

Is there a way of this been fixed? If possible, a way that can be done without re-installing XP because I have already had too do this twice today because of mistakes I made during installation.

Note: I installed XP correctly this time, so there is no way I have made an error to cause this problem.

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if this is specifically a problem with my monitor, or a software issue, so please let me know if I need to move the thread.

I have a Samsung T27B750 monitor and it normally displays in 1080p at 1920 x 1080 with no problem. Today as I was browsing the internet though, the display suddenly changed and now doesn't fit the screen. I tried changing the aspect ratio on my monitor's menu, but no matter what I set it to, the picture doesn't change at all, which is odd because normally going from 4:3 to 16:9 or Wide Fit causes a noticeable change.

Does anybody have any idea what could have caused this?

Okay I managed to solve it after running through some other troubleshooting steps:

I was reinstalling my graphics drivers when I realized that my monitor is also a Smart TV and is basically a small computer in and of itself. So I reset it to factory settings and redownloaded the most current update for it. After that it started working normally. So I guess the problem was with the monitor. Funny how the "smarter" all of these devices get, the more there is that can go wrong with them huh? I doubt this would have happened on my old monitor.

I'm teaching myself Hyper-V as an alternative to VMWare. I activated Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 and used it to create a Windows 10 virtual machine.
I quickly discovered that I'm not able to sign in to my Microsoft Account from the virtual machine because "to sign in remotely, you need the right to sign in through Remote Desktop Services."

I just purchased an adapter plug that allows me to connect my Lenovo/IBM thinkpad (T420) to my HDTV by plugging the HDMI cord into my TV and the other end to this adapter plug which converts the HDMI cable into a male plug which fits into my display port (there is no HDMI port on this model computer). It worked, but now I can't remove the adapter plug...it's stuck in the laptop display port. I do not know if the problem is caused by the male adapter plug or the female jack in the computer, but they're locked together now.

I have previously read review comments (on these HDMI/display port adapter plugs) mentioning this jamming happening on more than a couple occasions, but I don't recall any resolutions being mentioned except to break off (and destroy) the plug and possibly damage the display port as well. I called Lenovo tech support but they said I'd have to mail the computer to them to get it fixed. I'd prefer avoiding that if possible even though my warranty is still in effect and it would be of no cost to me.....just time lost without a computer.

I'd greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may be aware of how to resolve this problem (and also how to avoid it happening again) without doing damage to either the plug or especially the computer display port.

Thanks for your consideration in any case....

I found out it's becasue the laptop is randomly deciding to switch to display 2 - when it should be 1. No display settings in that section will change when its in that state until "detect" is used.

Then i run a batch i have that restarts aero and it goes back to normal.
"net stop uxsms
net start uxsms"

Basically i want a batch(s) to detect displays and restart aero on startup. Im on windows 7.

Nevermind, found a way to make a shortcut to switch to computer only display; maybe having that on startup will sort it out.

One of your firewall / adware / spyware programs is blockng changes. There should be a setting somewhere to allow it.

Hi everyone,

I have a windows xp computer that is on a domain and when you start it for the first time of the day it gets stuck at applying computer settings before you can log in. If you do a hard shut down to restart the computer it seems to start up normally. Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

A:Stuck at Applying Computer Settings

I am still having this issue does anyone have any suggestions? I might try and take it off the domain and re-join the domain.

I have a dell latitude d620 and one day the up and left keys magically stopped working.. later on I had the brightest idea to see whats the lowest level of brightness possible, now I'm pretty much screwed because I cannot get the brightness back up to normal (which is a pain in the rear end) using the FN+UP combination.

I've searched the web trying to find a solution and cannot find anything, any solutions?

Help is very appreciated

A:Up key not working, Brightness stuck on low settings (FN+UP)

Welcome to Seven Forums Nurein615. I think you can adjust it in BIOS with the down right keys (I hope they work!). Here is a (poorly made ) video that will illustrate how. Basically, F2 at boot, then video settings, then brightness. Don't go too bright as you have no left key to turn it back down! Good luck!

Sigh...very frustrating..

I have a dual language set-up going on my laptop of English as the primary and Korean as an option. For some reason, my computer shut down on its own for whatever reason, then upon start-up and log-in, the language settings were automatically changed to Korean. Unfortunately, I'm not fluent in it, so I don't know how to go about changing it back to English.
On a side-note, after this happened, there was an indication of an update on my Shut Down button, which I clicked and updated. During the update installation process, on the bottom of the screen was the usual Windows 7 logo, but had a Red-Orange "K" after it. Dunno what that was (gonna take a wild guess and say "Korean"?), but it went away..

Anyway, main problem is the language setting, which, for the record, happens often with Windows, in my experience. Anyone able to assist?

A:Trouble with language settings. STUCK!

Scratch that. I got it. Went to the Start Menu, searched "Regional and Language Settings" and hit Enter so I wouldn't have to navigate aimlessly and changed it back. Dunno why the f*** it was changed in the first place though..!

I am running Windows 2000 Pro and it was working just fine yesterday. This morning I go to turn it on and it's stuck on the loading your personal settings screen. It acts like it's about to load and than it restarts and does the same thing over and over. I did read somewhere that it probably has to do with a corrupted file in my settings...but since I'm the only one who uses the computer I don't have it set up to have more than one account setting. I can't even go into safe mode..the same thing happens. I did try to go to last known good configuration and that didn't do anything. It there a way I can log on without loading my personal settings? I can't think of anything I did yesterday that would cause this problem except that I ran a spyware scan with SpyBot and it deleted a few bad things. I also don't have a Windows boot CD since my computer was built by someone and he didn't give me the CD.

When I try to print a photo, I check the settings to make sure it is in color, but when I select color, it reverts to monochrome when I go to print. This happened before and I cannot remember what I did to fix it. I think it has something to do with photo
viewer or paint that is messing it up.

Hello all, one of my XP computers was infected with the FBI Moneypack virus. I booted into safe mode and ran a few scans with Malwarebytes and Bitdefender 2012 and both found nothing. I deleted the main profile and created a new user account. When I try to boot normally it takes a good 5-6 minutes at the "Widnows is loading" screen. Then I finally see the user account and when I click on the account and enter the password it just stays stuck at loading your personal settings. I can boot into safe mode with networking and load up the account just fine, however every time I do I noticed in Documents and Settings it creates a new profile folder which looks something like Username.Computername.000, and keeps adding a number every time I login. Not sure where I can go from here. Thanks in advance for any help.
