Upgrade My Graphics Card!

Q: Upgrade My Graphics Card!

Hi everyone. I hope you can help me with this one.

I want to upgrade my graphics card to be able to play some 3D games. I can't play any 3D games at all, if I try after installation, it hangs itself, or freezes, or I get a black screen. I've been given a couple of games but with out a 3D graphics card...2D just ain't enough!!! lol

Here are my PC Specifications:

Ali Aladdin V AFPset - GA-5AA Motherboard
320Mb Ram
15gig HD
AMD K6-2 450 Mhz CPU
Creative Audigy Player Soundcard
Matrox Millenium PCI Graphics card
O/system - WindowsXP Pro

My PC works well but the graphics card is old (it was orginally out of my really old pc - AST Advantage, purchased in 1994).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have checked out other threads and they've been helpful, but I need to know what would be compatible with the system I've got. Also cost will be playing a big part in what ever card I buy.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone....

Current PC specs listed above ..... to get it out of the way I am a gamer......

This upgrade is to allow me to play some of the newer games such as The Witcher and also to enable me to utilize DX10 when I eventually upgrade to Vista.

RAM.....this is what I have found...I do not overclock and I am very happy with the matched pair of Corasir XMS 512MB 5400C4 running at 533 that I currently have so I figured the safe bet is in just jumping to a matched pair of 1MB sticks of the same.....
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145015

Graphics card.....

I do have a budget and from the reviews I have read this card should carry me through the gaming world for at least the next year (hopefully 2) I like eVGA and I have nothing but good things to say about the eVGA 6800GS that I am currently using.

But if anyone has some input as to problems with the card listed below or if you know of another card that will perform just as well (or better) for around the same price I would like to hear about it.

Thanks in advance for any help.......

So I have a Sapphire Radeon R9 280x, and I just bought a MSI GeForce GTX 970. I also have a 500W CoolerMaster powersupply, would I need to upgrade this to 600-750W?

+note: I also bought two sticks of HyperX 16GB RAM and a Corsair H75 Hydro Series CPU Cooler.

A:Upgrade graphics card=upgrade powersupply?

Your 500 watt PSU meets the minimum requirement.... GeForce GTX 970 | Specifications | GeForce

So with that in mind....I'd say yes to a new PSU.

Hi,
My system came with a R9 270 which I want to replace with a Sapphire Dual X R9 R280x.
That card needs a 6pin and an 8pin connection and the manufacturer's site say a 500W PSU is advised.
So, I'm concerned that I get a new PSU that fits my case, has the right connectors for all the 8700 components, and is say north of 600W.
Could anyone point me in the right direction.
My system info is......
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3601 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
RAM 24GB

What kind of computer do you have? Have you updated it since you got it (adding stuff inside)?
Also, that is the drivers, they probably did something where those became uninstalled, because nothing is "Standard VGA Graphics" every company gives their cards names.

I was recently thinking about upgrading my GPU from a gtx 745 to a gtx 1060, more specifically this one.Can anyone tell me if it will work with my pc, or do i have to choose a different one/even buy a new PSU?

A:Graphics card upgrade

HI. It has a PCI Express x16 slot for graphics cards.Any card that needs that connection slot, should work for you ya sea 2.0 o 3.0,una cosa a tener en cuenta es la frecuencia a la hora de trabajar en MHz.-There may be incompatibilities between motherboards and graphics cards but by features should work, which, I recommend that where you buy that allow you to return it in case it does not work.-There is no list of compatible graphics cards since you can not try them all because of the number of cards in the market. The steps to follow and that work at the time of placing it are:1) If you already had the new graphic installed ... uninstall it again, reinstall the original.2) Restart the machine by pressing f103) Once in the bios you must deactivate "boot safe", which is inscribed in the security tab. Next you must activate "inherited mode", save changes and turn off the machine.4) Install new graphics card.5) Start the machine and with a bit of luck is everything. Regards.

Currently, I have a XFX GTS250 512MB Core Edition gpu in my computer and now some voice in my head tells me to upgrade a bit on this.
I have a bit of a tight budget at max R2000 and was wondering if a card like this would be an ample upgrade: http://titan-ice.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=51_143&products_id=5141

I have an idea that this the component causing some irritating lag in games, and I suspect that this will get worse when my new monitor arrive(a 27 inch) which will have larger res than my current 20inch 1600x900

I also prefer to run my games at the highest level possible, so tuning down the quality is not an option

Any comments, ideas etc etc are welcome

PS: Rest of specs is:
AMD Phenom II x4 3.2GHz;
Corsair 4gb ddr3 1333;
Running WinXP Pro

I am running a GTX460 myself, I am a gamer and I find it quite a nice card. It isn't the best out there but it is pretty decent.

However, things you need to also consider are:

1) What PSU do you currently have, it may not be enough to support the new card as it will require more power to run it.
2) Using WinXP is limiting your graphics a bit as you can only use DirectX 9. DirectX 10 and 11 are Vista and Windows 7 only, so you are missing out on their improvements.

To do this, you must replace the mainboard - which will also mean replacing the CPU.  You'll also need a new heatsink assembly and likely, a new AC power adapter.   Together, plan on it costing about $250-300  in parts, plus the labor to do the installation if you don't do it yourself.

I've searched and found a few posts on here questioning upgrading the GPU in the H30 but I haven't seen any follow-ups from people that have actually done it. I'm in the same position with an H30-50 with a GT 705 that I want to change - ideally for a GTX 750Ti but I've found that it draws a bit more power than the GTX 745 which is on the Lenovo hardware list.  Lenovo list 2 ratings of PSU (180w and 240w) and I have a 240W.  The max power of the 750 is 60W against 55W for the 745 - which would equate to drawing about  2% more power on the 240W PSU.  Not much more and possibly within tolerance, although I have already added an SSD. Anyway, I'd be interested to hear from anyone that has actually upgraded their GPU in an H30 or comments about upgrading to a GTX 750Ti. For info the comparisons are shown below.  http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2815&cmp[]=2843&cmp[]=2952

I have a Dell XPS 8700, and I'm currently looking to upgrade the graphics card and power supply. I've been having issues with games freezing and I want a better graphics card anyway because the 750 Ti just isn't doing it for me. I know I want to get a GeForce GTX 1060, but I am unsure of which power supply I should get. I don't trust the default Dell PSU. My case is ATX so I'd like to get a smaller PSU if possible so there's no issues with space. I'm unsure of which brand I should get and what wattage/voltages I would need. I'd at least like an 80 Plus Gold rating. Also, which 1060 brand should I get? Should I go with a blower-style card to reduce some heat in the case, or just stick with the regular?

A:What PSU and graphics card should I get for my upgrade?

The GeForce GTX 1060 is a much better graphic card than the GeForce GTX 750 Ti, but it also uses 60W more power and it requires a minimum of a 400W power supply.

The Dell XPS 8700 appears to come with a 450W power supply, so I can understand your concern about sticking with it because of the power demands of hard-core gaming.

There are a number of hardware/gaming experts here who can give you recommendations on a replacement power supply, so be patient until one replies.

I'm trying to upgrade to a Radeon RX 480 card.  I've upgraded the PSU to a 600 W Corsair.  I've been running a XFX Radeon 6950 with no issues.    I've had the 480 working in another machine so I know the card is fine.  I'm wondering if the 480 is even compatible with the motherboard.  I can't find information on its compatibility.

A:Graphics Card Upgrade

@ArcFlashAvoider, welcome to the forum. I believe that your problem is caused by the fact that the RX 480 requires UEFI in the motherboard instead of a Legacy/standard BIOS.  HP didn't begin using UEFI until mid-October, 2012.  The BIOS can't be upgraded to UEFI.  I suggest that you contact the manufacturer's Tech Support to see if they can help you with a VBIOS update for the card that will allow it to work with UEFI. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

My son bought a packard bell 2389 2 months ago and wanted to upgrade the graphics card. He has bought saphire x1950 pro ATI Radion. Fitting instruction were unclear. Couldn't see where to connect power supply to card. Also how does he find out the power supply his computer has. Finally if the supply is not enough can you recommend one that will be compatable with the PC

Thanks

A:Graphics card upgrade

The power output of the power supply should be somewhere on the power supply. Usually the ones that manufacturers use are anywhere from 200 watts to 350 watts. (Not 100% sure).
None the less the best way to figure out which power supply you need is to see what is recommend for the card, and then get more then that.
As far as the connecting goes there should be a spare plug, but once again manufactures dont usually give extra because they want it to look clean. Just get an upgraded one from somewhere. Antec usually makes good power supplies, and power supplies should be universal.

A:Upgrade Graphics Card

htank, welcome to the forums.

Will that card work with Windows 7? Yes it will. Is it worth buying just for Windows 7? Others may say yes, but personally I would say no. Reason for that is you are liable to run into all kinds of problems getting it to work due to being an AGP card, if you haven't yet do a search of this forum and you will find there have been all kinds of problems getting AGP cards to work in Windows 7 (there is a 27 page thread stickied at the top of this forum). Most of the problems stem from AGP not being fully supported and the lack of a proper AGP driver (not to be confused with the driver for the video card), that allows the video card driver to work properly.

Also depending on your current power supply, you may also need to upgrade it for that card as the card requires an external connection to the power supply.

Another thing is that sad to say, but the card you linked to costs about what your whole computer is worth. Also if you do get that card and then decide down the road to get a new computer, you won't be able to move the card to the new computer as there are no computers being sold with AGP slots anymore.

Normally I am all for upgrading as necessary, but in cases like yours I usually recommend on holding off on Windows 7 until such a time as you get a new computer that is more in line with running it without needlessly spending money to get there.

I need a new one, on a limited budget and it needs to be able to run windows 7, and be compatible with my dell dimension 3000. I have no idea about graphics cards. I dont know what i need to buy nd how to install it when i get one so any help is appreciated!

Hi all,

First time on the forum as this is my very first attempt at upgrading my PC.

I'm having serious doubts whether my 2 year old Dell XPS 210 (Core 2 Duo E6600 Processor 2.4GHz 1066Mhz) box will be able to cope with Street Fighter 4. I've been using the URL link (below) to benchmark my computer against minimum specs of some current graphics heavy games (Far Cry 2, Crysis, Left 4 Dead etc.). The funny thing is that it apparently fails minimum specs for games that seem to already run just fine with my current setup.

Can You Run It?

Anyway the issues are:1. Graphics Card

Currently I still have the factory fitted 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro (PCI Express x16 interface with DVI output) in place. I'm well aware that because of the space saving case, the Dell XPS 210 is notoriously difficult to upgrade, and I suspect (as a newbie) that this impacts on the graphics cards I can upgrade to. I'm told that the Radeon X1300 is a half-height graphics card and my general search for half height replacements similarly have 256MB.
Would I be able to replace my current PCI-Express x16 graphics card with a (half-height) PCI-Express 2.0 card?
Are there any more powerful (>256MB) low-profile/half-height graphics card you guys can recommend?
Hopefully I won't have to start considering about replacing the power supply as well, since I have exactly no knowledge about that what-so-ever.

2. RAM

At the moment I have 2GB's (2x1024MB) worth of Dual Channel 53... Read more

A:Upgrade graphics card

yep, you can run a agp 8x in a agp 4x slot as long as the card says its backwards compatible

altho, with that huge bottleneck, i dont think its worth getting the 3850

my last system had a agp 4x slot, couldnt tell a difference at all when i upgraded my nvidia 5200 to a much better agp card.

save a couple of bucks and try the 3650 agp card, it also supports 4x/8x agp

I don't game at all but if I choose to edit my screensaver it takes a very long time for all the images to load-90 seconds or more. Would a new graphics card help? I don't need tonss of extra power and don't want to have to add a fan or have extra wattage. Thanks.

A:Do I need a graphics card upgrade for this?

Maybe more RAM, as your PC is overall pretty weak.

As the title says, I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card. I have a Sparkle 9500 gt right now so I really am looking to the upgrade of my card so I can play all the newest games I have on max settings (or at least very close to) with good frame rate (Crysis, Oblivion, Dragon Age, MW2, Metro 2033, ect.). So I am looking to buy into a higher range model around the 250 - 350 dollar price range (maybe a bit higher if necessary). Below is a list of my system specs which I hope you find useful.

1. Motherboard- XFX nForce 680i LT SLI Motherboard
2. Graphic interface - 2 PCI Express X16 Slots
3. Memory - 4 gigs of Kingston 667mhz pc5300 ddr2
4. CPU - Intel core 2 quad q6700
5. CPU Speed - 2.66 ghz
6. Power Supply Make/Model - Ultra LSP 650w
7. Watt output/Amperage -- 650w
8. Country -- USA
9. If it helps I have a 22" Acer Widescreen monitor

Originally I was thinking about switching to ATI but heard that if I do that I would have to invest in a new motherboard because mine looks like it can't use crossfire. Even though right now I'm only really interested in buying one card but in the future I will probably buy a second card if necessary. I heard that ATI's drivers don't work to well with Nvidia stuff so I'm kinda under the impression that even one card might crash a lot. Also, I was looking at the Nvidia GTX 200 card series to purchase but I am wondering if they are even worth the money that they are being sold at (GTX 285?) or if... Read more

I would like to upgrade my grahpics card to support 3 monitors, what cards can I purchase?

A:Graphics card upgrade

Lettng me know what kind of budget you have for the upgrade would be a plus. You will need a card that supports legacy BIOS.Sapphiretechnology makes cards that support legacy and EFI BIOS.A card such as the Sapphire Radeon Dual-X R7 2G D5 would work.  A Sapphire Tri-X Radeon R9 390X 8G will as well. There are others, but the card  you select as a candidate has to have legacy BIOS support . A card with only EFI support will not boot with your motherboard.  GeForce GTX 10xx series cards have only EFI BIOS support. You will also need to upgrade your ATX PSU to one with 400W or more capacity and PCIe power connectors. I suggest usng a modular style PSU, perhaps a Corsair Builder PSU like the one in the link at NewEgg.com

Hello! I have recently purchased an HP Pavilion 550-222ur and found out that the default graphics card (GeForce GT 730) is underperforming in most games. So I  want to get a more powerful one (was thinking GeForce GTX 750 Ti or Asus GeForce GTX 950 mini). While researching the upgrade possibility, I found out that some graphics cards fail to function on HP-branded PCs due to some BIOS issue. So the question is: will the graphics cards mentioned in this post work? And if those cards are compatible, I will have to get a better PSU as well, right? Thanks in advance. Providing specifications of my PC for reference purposes: http://support.hp.com/gb-en/product/HP-Pavilion-550-200-Desktop-PC-series/9259612/model/9764558/docu...

A:Graphics card upgrade

GeForce GTX 750 Ti or Asus GeForce GTX 950 mini are not viable for your specific desktop PC. The internal 180W PSU, as shown in the specs that you graciously provided a link to,  is a definite showstopper. Your PC is, unfortunately, not what one would call a good upgrade candidate as HP did not state which case format it has. I will ask HP about it.
