X1 Extreme Gen2 - 2101: Detection error on Storage Device (M.2)

Q: X1 Extreme Gen2 - 2101: Detection error on Storage Device (M.2)

This is less than 1 week old X1 Extreme Gen2. I had to repair my ideapad 530s three times and wasted so much time on that so I thought let's try "professional" instead of "media" laptop. I reused my Crucial 1TB NVME SSD that was working just fine in ideapad and stuck it in X1. What I'm seeing in X1 are random freezes, parts of the drive not being accessible, whole drive not being accessible and finally 2101 boot errors. What I tried so far: made sure all drivers are up to date, swapping SSDs in the two slots (stock Intel 256GB with Crucial 1TB), using 1TB drive with external USB-C caddy and placing the 1TB drive back into ideapad. SSD works perfectly fine when out of X1 and creates the same errors regardless of where I place it inside the X1. I also tried some third party drive health check utilities, they all said the drive is fine and Lenovo's boot utility/system checker said the same as well. EDIT: I also tried changing Lenovo power saving plan so that disk never goes to sleep if laptop is plugged in. Another thing I also noticed is that every time I will plug in or out either power cable or headphone jack the screen will go black for a second or two, as if I was connecting an external monitor. Not sure what is going on with this machine. I'm trying to backup data right now and I type this on ideapad. Is there anything I can try before I return this laptop? I don't want to lose more time with shipping this machine back after I wasted so much time already with ideapad. I don't want to call Lenovo agents because I'm afraid they don't have the expertise to troubleshoot this properly and will ask me to send the laptop back or something. So I'm asking here. Are there any logs I can check to try and figure out what the problem is? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I get the following message when I turn on the laptop: 2101: Detection error on SSD (M.2) The laptop (T560) is new and was only received on the 13 May 2016.  When it occurs I run thediagnostics and can usually get the machine to boot up. However, the error then reoccurs at a later stage, usually if the machine has been idle for a while.  I have lodged a service call with Lenovo but thought I would share my experience here and see if anyone else has the same issue?

Hi I have a 2nd Gen X1 Yoga (20JES00N00) which is not even a year old and, for the third time now, is giving me an error ("2100 Detection Error on Storage Device (M.2) \\ Press Esc to continue.") when I start it up (and pressing Esc as instructed only prompts a question where to boot from, and then leads to the same error again). First time this happened (in March), Lenovo Hotline Zagreb sent me a new SSD, which I had installed by an expert (turned out it was impossible to do without special tools, because a screw had been overtightened at the factory). Second time (in May), I got a new SSD and mainboard installed. (Needless to say, each time with significant downtime and hassle setting up the system by myself again). Now the error is back a third time. Does anybody know of a solution which really works? This is rather frustrating.

Hi Guys ! I have been getting this error for a while now. Since august I think. It happens very randomly and I don't know what triggers it really. I tried to put another m.2 and it worked perfectly, no errors. But with the factory m.2 I get this error and I never got the way around to fix it. When I first got this error I barely could start my computer. 9/10 times I got the error and I couldn't start the computer at all. I replaced it with another m.2 and worked fine until I decided I wanted to put the factory one again ( because it has twice as much storage ). Now I still get the error but rarely. Casually. In very random situations. I still find it very frustrating and I was hoping someone has any solution. Thanks and have a nice day

About a month of regular use with my Yoga 3rd Gen. laptop, I started getting an inconsistent error whenever I attempted to power up the device. For about a week or two I attributed this 2100 error to the software side as nothing hardware had changed, or at least to my knowledge. After no avail after windows updates/intel updates, I then switched to the hardware aspect after reading online posts with a similar issue and potential solutions. I unscrewed the back cover with little difficulty and located the M2 drive. My plan was to reseat the drive as I had read online that this could be a quick fix. However, the stubborn M2 drive would not budge, resulting in some unfortunate stripping. I then tried to increase the padding to the drive as I had hoped the issue was stemming from my daily commute and movement the laptop was experiencing. I first using some eletrical tape as a way to decrease the distance between the back cover to the drive. After using the computer that night, this attempt appeared to be successful as I did not run into any error. However, the next day when I powered on the device, I was faced with the familiar black screen 2100 error. Once again, I then tried to increase the artificial padding and to see if I was on the right track. Today, the first day after the weekend, I had to see if I had finally found a solution but was faced with 2100 errors and constant blue screens/crashes after a few minutes of use. The only options that I have left whic... Read more

My X1 Yoga with a 512 GB hard drive just started getting the "2101 Detection error on SSD (M.2)" on boot.  When I am able to get it to boot it stays up for 10-30 minutes, then freezes and/or reboots. I have seen numerous postings in this forum and elsewhere but no definitive description or solution. Lenovo support refuses to answer any questions as the laptop is out of warranty. This is clearly a defect and KNOWN to Lenovo - yet I cannot find any resources to help solve the problem.  How is that even possible? If this is not addressed by Lenovo this will be my very last purchase from them. Does ANYONE have concrete information as to what this problem is and how to fix it? thanks

After a month of regular use, I started getting the following error: 2101: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD).  Here is the troubleshooting that I have done:- Checked the SSD to ensure it is well position into its connection.- Updated the Bios.- I thought the issue was due to a faulty SSD but after I put the original SSD back in and returned the Crucial SSD, it still got the error. Now I am really not sure what the issue is. Is anyone having a similar issue? Could it be a problem in the miniSATA connection? Thanks

Model: T450sEquiped as:Intel i54+4GB RAM256GB SSD (M.2) Configured as boot disk running Win 7 x64500GB HDD as additional storage Issue:Seemingly at random, approx once every one to two weeks while PC is on and at the desktop but not actively being used (meaning no user is sitting in front of it performing tasks) it will error and crash.  The error is a black screen with the following error: 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) Press Esc to continue. According to the user Esc does nothing and the only escape is to long press the physical power button until a power down occurs.  On reboot the system comes up without issue.  No user has actually seen the crash take place.   MY QUESTION(S):1st.  Is this most likely an issue with the T450s not being able to reliably boot from the m.2 slot or is this more likely an issue with the SSD installed in the m.2 slot?2nd.  Is this something altogether different?  Any (knowledgeable) advice or info appreciated.

A:T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but my experience has been that the Gen4 and later CPUs (like yours) support a very low power state that is incompatible with some devices. (that would make it a problem with the card) Make sure you have the latest BIOS and power manager software installed. Look in the device manager and find the M.2 SSD. There should be a power management tab. Turn off the option to allow the system shut the device off to save energy.

After struggling with this fault on my T430 for many years, and reading (almost) all there is on the interwebz, I'm disappointed to see many laptops are affected by it and Lenovo hasn't (so far) given out an official word on the subject (apart from installing Express Cache on Windows 7). I understand the problem is specific to Lenovo and due to BIOS, not hardware. Apparently a few have had this problem despite not having an msata drive which is strange... This is an attempt at summarizing the experience and stop-gap solutions until (hopefully) Lenovo can say/ do something about it My specs.T430 Core i7 3840QM (mod). Discrete graphics with latest BIOS v. 2.82. 16 GB RAM, FHD (mod). Hi.  I have a T430s (original owner). At boot-up, I receive a "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (mini sata)", BUT I don't use a Mini SATA!! Windows 10; All drivers current via Lenovo system update (incl. bios 2.69).I have a Crucial SSD drive; I have verified Crucial SSD has latest firmware.I do not have (and have not had) a Mini SATA card installed - this is why the error is so weird to me.I DID recently change the Wifi Switch and cable (which is when the error started showing)The wires that would feed the Mini SSD are still covered with tape from the factory (I forget the colors)I have removed the battery, internal battery and power (and rebooted).  I have reseated the SSD and the DVD drive (and rebooted).I do not have Express software installed; the software that would control the Mini SATA drive (I can't see any "express" software in Add / Remove programs) Can you help me with this annoying mystery?

Good day dear forum members! My brand new X1 Carbon arrived fully loaded......with errors. Right out of the box it hit me with a BSOD (CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED). The system boots from the second attempt, but BSOD pops up every 5-10min. All drivers/BIOS updated. 1TB Samsung nvme ssd (PM961 f/w3L0QCXY7) seems to be using a driver dated 6/21/2006 and so does its "Standard NVM Express Controller". Samsung nvme driver cannot be installed because it claims there's no suitable ssd, Samsung magician doesn't recognize the drive either, however, it is properly identified in the device manager. Any suggestions before I ship this back..? Any help appreciated.

Dear all, I recently got my new X1 Extreme Gen2 with the pen-enabled OLED panel ... so far the pen was also working fine. But today I tried to connect my older Wacom Intuos4 device as well ... and apparently that killed the pen functionality of the display. I have the Pen Pro (which was shipped with the laptop) ... By now I have uninstalled my Wacom drivers again, I reconnected the Pen via bluetooth and I reinstalled the Lenovo pen utility. The pen itself is recognized by the laptop (as a bluetooth device) and a double click on the back button is launching the whiteboard app ... so in general the pen is working and the bluetooth connection is there. But its not recognized on the display. On the lenovo website I cannot find any drivers for the pen support of the X1 Extreme Gen2 ... did I miss something I maybe need to reset or reinstall? Thanks a lot PHILIP

So I noticed that when I use this setup where the only thing plugged into the laptop is the USB-C cable, it can charge the laptop's battery albeit slowly which is expected due to the limited power it can deliver. When I run Cinebench along with the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (CPU voltage adjusted -0.140): when I only use the USB-C dock, XTU shows thermal throttling immediately, CPU temp is around 57-60C (Cinebench test results, ~800 pts)if I plug in the supplied 130W that came with the laptop directly to the laptop along with the USB-C dock, test runs as good as it gets (barring any throttling due to temperature of course) (~2100-2200 pts)if I plug in the supplied 130W before starting the test then remove it, leaving just the USB-C dock plugged in, the results as just as good as (~2100-2200 pts), sometimes running the test again, the results are goodHas anybody seen this before? I set the cooling to active for both battery and plugged in and set the performance to max in the BIOS, but aside from that, I don't know what else can be done and suspect that this might be a BIOS thing overriding things still. The behaviour is inconsistent, sometimes I can run the Cinebench test a couple of times with just the USB-C cable attached to the laptop from the dock, and performance is great, which was the case last night.  This morning however, I noticed it was back to throttling again even when browsing the web (max core frequency as low as 0.88GHz).

Hi, I having a lot of trouble getting the wireless wifi card working on my brand new X1 Extreme Gen 2. The extreme x1 gen 2 has a Intel ax200 wifi card and out of the box with default settings the wifi card restarts continuously both in windows and ubuntu 19.04. When looking in windows events log I can see errors from "Netwtw08" saying that it has encountered an error and the wifi card needs a restart. When this happens the network connection is disconnected and I lose connection for a few seconds before it reconnects to the access point again. This happens both on Ubuntu and Windows. The windows event log shows errors like "5007 - TX/CMD timeout (TfdQueue hanged)" To try to fix this I have updated everything I could, windows and drivers.I have updated everything with Lenovo vantage, windows update, running version 1909 of windows 10, installed the latest drivers from intel website for AX200 wireless card. But still the error continue to appear making the internet connection unusable. The only way to get a stable wifi connection is to disable 802.11n completely in the driver options. This stops the errors in windows event log, and the system log in ubuntu, from showing up. The problem I have now is that I have terrible wifi performance. connected with 802.11g on 2.4ghz and I just get about 20Mbps from my X1 extreme vs. about 70Mbps on my old Samsung S7 mobile phone, and also about 70Mbps on my old X1 carbon gen4 (which is where my ISP cap me). So, I d... I had another 4K Laptop and the story was the same. You can't expect too much when  you need a lot of power to display all those pixels.

Hi, I just received my X1 Extreme Gen 2, configured with top specs. My configuration is for home-office, so the first thing I do is connect an external monitor and wireless keyboard+mouse. I also work most of the time on the large monitor, with the laptop lid closed. What I did:. Run all updates available for Windows 10 Pro and via Lenovo Vantage (so everyhting is up to date).. Connect Dell monitor via HDMI. Works perfectly when laptop lid is open.. Configured laptop so when lid is closed, it does nothing.. Lapop power management is configured for "performance". What happens:As soon as I close the laptop lid, whatever graphics I have running on the external monitor (youtube video, browsers, etc...), even the mouse movement, becomes very choppy or lagging. When I reopen the laptop lid, the issue goes away. Any idea how to solve this problem? Thanks!

A:X1 Extreme Gen2: External monitor choppy "only" when laptop lid is closed

SOLUTION: it turns out that the "external PnP monitor" driver needs to be updated separately. While laptop lid is open and external monitor is connected, go to display settings, select the external display, and find your way to update the driver. In the end, Windows will automatically find your specific monitor's driver, and replace the "generic" one. After this update, the external monitor worked perfectly with laptop lid closed. Hope it helps.
