I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dell Support "Assist" just ran without giving me an option to stop, pause, or control in anyway.  It was using nearly all computer resources (I could barely save the word document I had open at the time).  This isn't "assist" more like computer take over.

How can I control the S. "Assist"?  How can I adjust the time between it's runs (currently it looks like monthly)?  After finishing it's scan or whatever it finally closed (cuz it wouldn't close the 20 times or so I clicked the "X").  I then opened it, looking for some results of the scan, and found none.  How can I view results?

Right now, seems like worthless bloatware.

Also, there is not a [New Post] button on the Laptop Forum (at least for me).

I updated 2 drivers that Support Assist recommended.    I checked them off and then d/l them.  Upon completion, I received the window message to Restart my computer.
I then ran Support Assist again to check for optional drivers.
Support Assist RECOMMENDED that I UPDATE THE SAME 2  DRIVERS that I just D/L!!!!
This is not the first time this has happened to me.
Why did my Drivers not UPDATE?    My computer said when it was being Queued and D/L followed by to Reboot.
Thanks for any help.

Hi, Sorry if Ive posted on the wrong forum but laptops looked like the closest option. Yesterday I clean installed the Dell factory image using reset PC.
All went well but when I checked Reliability History it showed an unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning for Dell Data Vault when Dell Support Assist was installed. During Dell Support Assist installation there was an earlier successful application installation and reconfiguration of Dell Data Vault (version 4.3.7.0) but that was successfully removed 15 minutes later for Dell Data Vault (version 4.3.8.0) ...this was when the unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning was flagged. At the same time  a successful application removal message for Dell data Vault (version 4.3.8.0). is also shown. Im not sure if that means now that I don't have Dell Data Vault installed.
Is this anything to be concerned about? Im not even sure what Dell Data Vault does. Is there anything I need to do or will it successfully update itself later on?

I received my new laptop at the beginning of the month but sent it back to customer support because the fan was too loud (and a couple of other issues).  I have been following the support ticket the the estimated delivery date the entire time has been for today 9/30.  I checked today, though, and now the estimated delivery date is 10/14.  That means I am not going to get my laptop back until well after my 30 day return window.  Am I still going to be able to return the laptop if I am unhappy with it when I get it back?

Hi

Got a Biostar Tseries 945P Chipset here. Apaprently Core2 is only supported after the bios has been flashed. Question, will the pc boot when I use a unsupported cpu, or will I have to use a supported cpu, flash and then put the new one in?

I put a e2140 in the pc and it's not booting.... So I am hoping its just the flash requirement, and not a busted mobo.

Thanks

Later.
I finally sign in with standard user Dell pops up a dialog asking  to download and install new software.  OMG you are not allowed to ask standard users to install missing software.

So here I am maybe I return it the day after tomorrow.

Later I've got the standard user that locked up at boot deleted and I've wasted 8 hours just watching the computer update but still feel like I should return it.  Maybe fdisk a hidden sector a say the hard drive is the wrong size.

Running on a new XPS 8900.  Whenever Dell Support Assist runs, a Blue Screeen of Death appears.  I am now experiencing a Windows Blue Screen of Death daily -- it appears to be running automatically every 12 to 24 hours..
The Windows minidump identifies the failures as coming from the address GenHC.sys+1509ewhich is adriver to support a USBSer device.  I've contacted the vendor to see if they can provide a fix, no new updates are on their website.
SO, how can I either get a version of Dell Support Assist  that does not trigger the BSOD?
Or how can I prevent Dell Support Assist from running?
1)  Is there an option to disable it
2) What should I uninstall?
Win10 shows Dell SupportAssist 1.1.6664.93 is installed.

Hi,
I have the above laptop and I just reinstalled OS with the OEM disc problem is hat I do not have the driver disc. I have been into my Dell and use the support assist to pick the drivers for my laptop. Problem is that it still shows a lot of drivers and many are not for my machine.

I did call Dell figuring that is I had to I would pay for the support and I was told that my laptop was considered "end of life" and they offered no support free of pad. But they did send me a link on how to use supportt assist to find the drivers whish is useless.

If I go into my device manager and click on the ones I need and open up the hardware info and number could someone direct myself to the correct drivers?

Needed are:
sm bus controller id pciven_8086&dev_1c2&subsys_04c51028&rev_05
unknown device acpi\smc8800
quanticom atheros bluetooth bus  root\btath_bus

Install the drivers under "chipset" -- starting with the intel HM67 driver, followed by a reboot:
www.dell.com/.../drivers
Under System Utilities, install the motion sensor driver.
For bluetooth and network, go to "Original Configuration" and identify the card installed.  Then install the corresponding drivers from the link above.  DO NOT just guess or try at random - you must identify the driver and install the correct one.

I just upgraded from my Athlon XP 2100 with 512MB of PC2100, to an Athlon XP 2600 (model 8) with 512MB of Corsair PC2700.

After installing the processor and RAM I set the front side bus for 166mhz (since the processor and RAM is 333mhz).

I was able to boot up find, but right after POST when Windows was supposed to start loading I got a black screen and my monitor turned off (like my PC was off).

So, then I set the processor and RAM for 133mhz FSB again so I could figure out what was going on and make sure I could boot into Windows XP (which I could, otherwise I wouldn't be typing this right now).

The processor detects as a 2600+ when I set the FSB for 166 (333), I just can't load Windows and when I check CMOS I see that it is running at 170'F.

A:Athlon XP 2600+, 170'F, Window's wont boot

Almost all mobos now a days, will do what you said, make the screen just go completly black, however your PC will remain on, when your CPU is overheating. This is the mobos protection, making sure your CPU doesnt fry. If its 170'F at 133FSB your cooler most probbly isnt seated properly.

When I changed coolers, and forgot to plug the fan into my mobo, the comp stayed on for 10minz or so, then the screen went black, but the computer LED was still lit up indicating it was on. So I recon you get the problem you do, at 333FSB, becasue your CPU is overheating (then being saved from the mobos cpu protection). So i'd check that your cooler is seated properly, spinning (the fan), and you didnt forget anything like thermal paste when you swapped cpus.

We have a Dell XPS 9350 that has randomly been popping up a message window from Dell Support Assist saying that it has detected a failing component that requires immediate attention.  it then wants you to log into our Dell account (I assume to start the support process since we are still under warranty).  What is weird is that under the "Failure Description" to the left of the message it has "Hard Drive - Not Installed".  Of course there is no hard drive, it is the SATA and there is no external drive attached.

Heres my problem, when I turn on my Presario, I get the Compaq screen, then it goes to the windows xp loading screen, and at the next step, when it should go to windows log in, it flashes a blue screen, too fast to read what it says, and reboots.
Now I just signed up here a couple of minutes ago and when I got to this forum I saw the recovery sticky and tried those directions. At the compaq screen I repeatedly tapped f10, but instead of giving me options (per the instructions) it seemed to do the diagnostic on it's own. It passed a lot of the functions, the only error being "system cmos checksum bad- used default settings". So I looked up the error and it says the error could be three things, bad cmos battery, bad bios update, or corruption due to incorrect shut down. Now, if I was to guess at one of these three options, I'd guess it was the battery. This is a pretty old laptop and as far as I know, the battery has never been changed. So heres my questions:
1.)Does this sound like a plausible explanation of whats wrong? I've had the hard drive go bad on me once before and the symptoms were completely different.
2.) If it was the cmos battery, would the laptop start with default settings, even though I haven't changed the battery?
3.) The laptop took a jolt shortly before this started happening, is it possible something just came loose?
4.) I had the laptop shut down on me once because the fan was clogged with dust and bound up (overheated). Now, with this probl... Read more

I have an HP Pavilion ZD7000 laptop. I recently upgraded the bios to the last version available for this particular model (F.34), hoping that in doing this I would get the ability to boot from a USB thumb added to my boot options. Well... no luck.

This laptop is probably between 3 and 4 years old I think. And I'm quite frankly shocked that this simple feature wasn't integrated into their bios.

So what I'm kind of trying to figure out is if this something that persists on any new HP models today, and also perhaps find a point in time which they started to make it a standard feature. Your feedback would be much appreciated.

I was running Ubuntu Linux then decided to change back to Windows XP. I was happily running the Windows set-up disc to reformat the entire hard drive. After this was done, the set-up disc went on to copy over a load of files and then went into a reboot, the screen went black (OK) but then everything just hung . In the end I went to power off intending to start again. The computer would not power off except by my pulling out the battery and supply cable. If I reconnect the cable, I can power on with the power button after which I hear the fan and the optical drive being read but then it just stalls - nothing on the screen, cannot get in bios and still refuses to power off. It"s either a big coincidence or the three symptoms ( no screen: no bios: no power-off ) are all a result of the failure to self-reboot during the windows set-up? I have removed the CMOS battery and left it out overnight but to no avail Can anyone help? My laptop is a HP Compaq NX6325. Thanks.

A:Laptop wont boot and wont power off

The first question is hardware or software? That this happened in the middle of a Ubuntu to XP conversion is interesting, but may be purely coincidental. It could be a straight-up hardware problem that just happened to occur at this time.

So, the way to determine this is to try to boot using some kind of media. XP disk, Ubuntu Live, Hiren's, whatever. It if boots, hardware is possibly good. If not, hardware is bad.

If hardware is bad, you WANT the hard drive to be bad. Everything else costs more money than the computer may be worth.

Hello there,

It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.

Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:

1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.

4. Accept the Windows license agreement.

5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.

6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.

7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

Hi

My friend's laptop currently cannot boot whenever I start it up. It only show the Logo screen and the message "Prepare to boot..". After that, the screen blinks then goes dark and returns to the Logo screen. It keeps rotating like that.

I tried to use my USB boot to repair the window but it said that my version is different from her (I'm using Ultimate 64x) and my friend does not know which version of Win 7 she is using. I unplugged the battery too but it doesn't help at all.

Anyone has an idea how to deal with this issue?

P/S: I still can access the BIOS menu and Boot menu

Sincerely,
Quan

Hi! two days ago my HP laptop suddenly shut down by itself and now it doesn't boot up to window, just stay at black screen. I only got it for slightly over a year. I thought there could be something wrong with the hard drive so I went into BIOS to test it, but it passed both hard drive and memory test. I went online to do some research then tried any suggestion that I found in different forum, but still no help. When it just power up, I also tried F11 for system recovery option but nothing came up for me to do anything. Would someone please help! I'm moving out soon so I need my laptop!

I'm using HP Pavillon dm4-1165dx Entertainment NoteBook
Thanks in advance.

It sounds like your bootmgr went AWOL. You can use the bootable CD of Partition Wizard (last entry on this webpage) to see what is going on. See whether you have an active 100MB partition. If not, check whether any other partition is marked as active. And whilst you are at it, fix the MBR on the HDD.

See how far you get and report back.

Note: The active partition contains the bootmgr

I am having issues with one of my laptops, when I press the power button and nothing happens, but If I take out the battery and put it back in, it sound like its going to boot up (power and HD lights come on, cdrom starts), then It shut down. Try to press the power buttonagain and nothing happens. The laptop also will boot up on its own every once in a while, with out me doing anything with it. Also when I go to shut it down, it does a restart instead.

If anyonw have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Thx

So my laptop has been buggy of late, very buggy. It's been working on this new major update that just came out, but it's weird while booting it'll work on this major update for an hour or two they display the message 'restoring to previous settings'....then a day later will start again and continue at the progress it had the day previous (if it stopped at like 30% the day before it'll resume there). It last stopped at 75% 2 or 3 days and hasn't resumed since. Any way, my laptop (toshiba) has been buggy awhile, and got even worst today like completely freezing, so i backed up all my important files and proceeded to a full reset (reset and don't save any files or aps, to be specific). It took about an hour and half to do the reset but at the end of "the reset has been complete but we could not delete all of the files, you may consider running another reset (which I did not)" and it reboots. It gets past the Toshiba loading screen with the swirling circle of dots then gets to the next black screen still with the same swirling dots which i assume is the point it's trying load windows and it stayed on that page for over 3 hours.....i figured something was going wrong as i doubt it should take that long. So I rebooted again twice to try to pull up that windows recovery thing again with the reset function I used earlier and THAT does not pull up anymore.....I loaded bios and switched to default setting (I knew it wouldn't d... Hi everyone,
A longtime Dell enthusiast, I love my Dell laptop and haven't had really any problems with it.
But today the Support Assist self-test said that the hard drive had "failed" its test.  It gave the following error codes for the hard drive (ST500LT012-9WS142):
WHD16-6GP  (SMART short self test:  "failed")
     WHD20-J2C  (Targeted read test:  "failed")

So, obviously, I'm just wondering:  Does anyone know exactly what this means?  And how serious is it? Though running a little slower, my laptop is still working....
Whatever help/info you all could offer, I would really, truly appreciate it (!).  I've already started looking into a replacement hard drive--and the cost is minimal, but I fear the aggravation of a full install of software (I've never done that).  Anyway, that's where I'm at; thanks everyone!  - Robert

P.S. This laptop is considerably past the expiration of its warranty.

Hello,

My Acer Aspire won't start after boot (the fan buzzes but there is only a black screen). So i removed the HDD that contains all my programs and files an immediately bought a new laptop. This laptop is a toshiba that has windows 8 preinstalled along with a whole lot of advertising junk. I wish to run the OS of my Hitachi  loose laptop HDD but Toshiba only reads its own HDD's, When i plug it in the toshiba i get an error message so i have to some how run the hitachi HDD externally somehow.

Could someone please tell me what my options are?

Is there a way to completely overwrite all the data on the toshiba HDD with the data on my Hitachi?

Or should i try to find an HDD to USB adapter cord and try to run it that way?

Please help and tell me what the most viable option is..

Thank you in Advance

A:How to boot the Window 7 OS that is installed on a loose Hitachi laptop HDD

Is not possible to Boot the HDD from the Acer on the Toshiba computer they are different models so that means different drivers, it will never work.
Maybe if you format the HDD and install windows 7 on the new machine but you might need a new license to activate windows 7.

Hi Team,
Recently My dell latitude e6330 wont boot up.. after trying to turn it on, diagnostic led is stable and the other two leds are blinking which means memory modules are not detected as said in the guidelines for dell laptops. Ive tried replacing both ram, tried to clean it up, replaced it with ram from working laptops with the same build its still not working, could it be that the motherboard itself is broken? is it possible to fix the said ram slot? if not what are the possible reasons that causes this damage.
Please reply asap or if any information available dell team.
Cheers!
