Preferred Solution: Virtual Memory Extremly Low

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I've been experiencing sluggish performance, browsers were laggy and non responsive after having many tabs.

I found that the solution to improve performance was to change Virtual Memory values and disable "paging file size" for all drives.

Now the computer performance is amazing, everything responds properly but now I'm getting error messages of low memory and getting crashes. A few minutes ago the computer crashed to a black screeen.

Here are the values I have right now in Virtual Memory, what else should I do to stop these crashes? I already tried a few different values but the problem still persists.

Any suggestions?

6 months ago,i upgraded memory from the factory installed 64 to 256. It works, etc.

Is there any additional tweaking/ajustments i can do? i read something with virtual memory setting could be done for one thing.

A:After upgrading memory,its works,Virtual memory Tweaking Now?

Unless you have Win95 you likely donít want to go messing with your virtual memory. And even in that case it is the vcache you would be more interested in tweaking. Win98 and higher handles memory well.

If you watch your system monitor and are sure you arenít using your virtual memory you might do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 INI tweak. Unless you are doing graphics, video editing or something RAM intensive you likely arenít using the virtual memory and the tweak wonít slow your computer. It doesnít speed it up, it just stops needless writes to the hard drive during idle time. Information if you want to do that: http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm

Donít let anyone talk you into Cacheman or any of those Mem/RAM/Turbo/Boost type programs. They were written for Win95 and counterproductive in anything since.

My boy's desktop has a low memory warning problem that is a little different than some of the other threads I've read here.  He gets the warning when he plays SWTOR.  Task manager shows about 290 MB of memory in use during play with no leaking.  He has an SSD as the system drive with 140 GB free out of about 240 GB.  After going on the Microsoft boards, I tried to fix the problem by resetting the virtual memory settings to "automatically size paging file" and even a custom setting but the settings won't save following a restart and it always comes back saying that no virtual memory has been allocated.  The PC runs Win8 32 bit with a Core DUO E8400 and 4GB of RAM on the MB.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions/help.

" XP REQUIRES "backing storage" for EVERYTHING it keeps in RAM.
Virtual Memory is always in use.All processess gets virtual memory addresses
(a Virtual Address Space) no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer."

"Memory allocation in is a two-step process--virtual memory addresses are reserved first, and committed second...The reservation process is simply a way NT tells the Memory Manager to reserve a block of virtual memory pages to satisfy other memory requests by the process...There are many cases in which an application will want to reserve a large block of its address space for a particular purpose (keeping data in a contiguous block makes the data easy to manage) but might not want to use all of the space."

In other words, that virtual memory to which you refer,is only allocated memory, not necessarily
paged memory.

The thing you really want to know,is the actual pagefile usage.Use this programHERE

If I choose to rais the amount of virtual memory the system uses does this meen that the computer will not show as much Physical Memory or not be able to utalize it?

A:Virtual Memory And Physical Memory

Virtual memory is actually not memory. It is simulated memory area on the HDD. When you are using a lot of virtual memory, your system will actually run slower. HDD access is considerably slower than RAM access. The OS will page memory out to the HDD to make more physical memory available to itself or applications, as needed.

I was running Outlook, AIM, and IE at the same. After a few moment, I'd get this following message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.

When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?

I ran Spybot, AdAware, and VirusScan just to see if I had any spyware or virus on my computer. None. I also checked the Processes in Task Manager and I didn't see any suspicious applications running. But I noticed that when I ran IE, the memory usage in Task Manager would keep going up (significantly) eventhough I didn't do anything in Explorer.

Can somebody tell me what the problem here? And perhaps a solution for it.
Thank you very much.

virtual memory is hard drive space allocated by your computer for ram that is unavailable or for page swapping. Generally you do not worry about virtual memory. It is a system function. Generally it is set to automatic from windows. With windows XP, 512MB is the minimum to run an acceptably performing computer. 1gb is highly recommended. With Vista 1gb is the minimum, 2gb is recommended.

Sir
I do have a question?

We have a space in harddisk ,called virtual memory.  In addition to DRAM ,Operating System  uses this  virtual memory to store and run applications. Virtual memory makes up for the need of space required.

I think that the physical memory DRAM is not needed. Virtual memory inside the hard disk is  sufficient.

By avoiding DRAM we  can save the cost of  physical DRAM. We can also save lot of time that is involved in associating the pages between DRAM and Virtual memory.

Of course , virtual memory provided by the hard disk is slow. But  in current trends we can research , to increase the speed of magnetic drums being used by the harddisk to store data.

Thanks ,
Ramkumar.

I am wondering what my computer should be set at for it's best performance as far as memory usage etc.? Do I set it so the system takes care of it or put in my own amounts? Thanks for your help and sorry if this is not in the proper forum!!
DLBerry

A:Memory Usage/Virtual Memory

Just let the system takes care of it. If you have enough physical memory, you really shouldn't need to worry about it. Virtual memory or Page file, is memory that uses your hard drive. When you have a app or apps that uses more memory than you physical have, the system will alocate space on the hard drive for "virtual memory" or Page File. This is when you notice performance lag on your computer, because the hard drive transfers data at a much slower rate than your memory.

Those settings should be fine - if Windows crashes you won't be able to get a kernel dump with a paging file on C: that small, but for a desktop machine that should be fine (you can always change the setting and try again a second time if it's really necessary). In fact, since you have a properly sized paging file on E:, I'm not sure there's a need for one on C: if you're going to keep it that small.

A:virtual memory

Hello gean

How much RAM (memory) is installed? You might need more, or you might just have to increase the virtual memory.

The virtual memory should be set at 1.5x RAM installed.

Right click ?My Computer?/Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings.
Click Advanced Tab.
You will see the size at the bottom.

If you need to increase it click the ?Change? button for Virtual Memory
Make both the minimum and maximum values = 1.5 x RAM installed
Click SET
Then OK your way out.
Reboot

A:virtual memory

oh-kay, first, How many icons are in your task bar at the lower far right?
I'd start by shutting all of the ones down that you dont use.
Second go into Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG
There will be a "Tab" that says "Start up"
Un check anything you dont need to start with your computer. then click apply and close the window (Exit with out Restart)

Next go to Start -> Right click on "My Computer" -> Properties -> Advanced -> In the "Preformace" box click on "Settings" -> "Advanced" tab then click on "Change" in the Virtual memory.

Here you can change it to whatever. I usually change it to 2500 in Both boxes if the system has 256mb of ram. Or up to 3500 if they have 512mb of ram.

Then click on "Set"

Now.. Restart your computer. When Windows comes back up there will be a notification telling you that you se;lected what to start up, check the box that says something to the effect of "Dont display this again" and you should be good to go.

Now I have seen that some Spyware and Viruses can cause a Huge change in preformace. Make sure your protected and up to date, run your programs and remove anything they find.

In your case altering VM won't help you. You need to increase the physical memory from 256mb to at least 512mb (1gb would be a lot better). The low system RAM would cause delays between the system and VM. As a matter of interest how much free space do you have on the hard drive?

Hello Zoro,

That's absolutely false. In fact, in would most likely hurt performance by turning it off. Some programs actually require the page file to run properly no matter how much RAM you have installed. You could move the page file to be located on a separate physical hard drive than the one your Windows 7 is installed on for some better performance though.

Windows is increasing the page file size" or something like that. I looked through here and google to find solutions. I have tried increasing the page file size. I have let windows manage the page file. Nothing seems to work. Right now it shows 1.4gb of page file being used and no programs are running (except avg free and its components which don't take up more then what seems like 50mb). The pc has 512mb of RAM and the initial size of the page file was 1.5 times that (recommended size by microsoft). Now its at least three times larger than the RAM. Should I replace the RAM or is there a problem somewhere? Usually I would fix this myself but something is just not right. I have some screenshots of the task manager processes windows and performance monitor.

Hi, all. Recently, I've gotten into making movies with windows movie maker. I've never had any problems uploading and editing large clips or saving videos. Until now. I have a rather large video project, the largest project I've ever done (26 minutes). I took the first five minutes and put it in its own file, but it won't let me finish it. That stupid thing pops up -- "Your virtual memory is very low." And then it says, "Movie could not be saved." It won't even let me edit one project, which has five minutes worth of spliced together clips.

I've googled solutions for this issue, and have tried right clicking My Computer and tinkering with the virtual memory. Under paging file, it's currently set to "System managed size." I've also tried various custom sizes (from 1000-10000 MBS). Nothing has worked.

Under My Computer properties, it says I have 384 MB of ram. I have 131 GBs of free space on file C (out of 149 GBS), and I have an external harddrive with 444 GBS. It doesn't matter which drive I try to save my movies to -- it won't work.

This all started yesterday, after I bought software called Pinnacle MovieBox Plus (Studio 12), because I wanted to upload videos from my VCR. It didn't work at all, couldn't locate the capturing device no matter what I tried, so I removed the program completely. I also downloaded zillatube a few days ago, and have saved quite a few video clips from youtube in the ... Read more

A:Low virtual memory

You need some RAM. 384MB is probably not sufficient to run a editing program, moreover, Windows Movie Maker. You didn't have issues before it. I'd suggest buying some RAM (another gig, and you'll improve performance like, 10 fold.)

What kind of computer is it? Model number?

BTW: Whenever it says "low virtual memory" it means you need more RAM. I fried a Laptop like that.

Hi kipps !

RAM, Virtual Memory, Pagefile and all that stuff

The "virtual memory is very low" message either means you haven't enough ram and page file space or, most likely, some buggy program is using all your virtual memory.

When you get that message press ctrl+alt+del, click the processes tab, go to view => add columns and tick the virtual memory size box. Give us the name of the process that uses the virtual memory the most.

How much RAM do you have ? What are your page file settings ? To see the latter right-click my computer => properties => advanced => settings under performance => advanced => change.

What's your computer's brand and model ?

it is very handy on systems with a low amount of system memory, but anything more than what windows sets as the default is really just wasted.

Virtual memory just uses your hd space as memory. Given that, it can only access that memory at the top speed of the hd. Since regular memory reads MUCH faster than your average hd, putting too much virtual memory onto your hd will slow everything down to a crawl.

Also, throughout my time on the computer today randomly internet explorer will pop up (i use Mozilla) by itself and try to start. Is this unrelated? I have paretologic anti-virus but it isn't catching anything.

thank you for your time!

Considering your computer(unknown brand name, model name, model number) is running Windows XP and its associated programs with only 256 MB of RAM, I'm guessing it's running like a snail and bogging down from time to time.

Its Intel D845GRG motherboard has an Intel 845G chipset and supports up to 2 GB(2048 MB) of DDR PC2700 or DDR PC3200 RAM.

I suggest you max out that computer with RAM.

Doing that will eliminate the "virtual memory" message and will greatly increase the speed and performance in that computer.

I just got an alarm icon in my taskbar that Windows virtual memory is too low.
Yikes! What ever is this all about+how do I resolve the issue?
My system doesn't appear to be running slow nor does it freeze up.
I tried to Google low virtual memory, but am mystified to say the least.
When it comes to files+deleting them, it makes me nervous. I'm a bit of a rookie here, so I need some plain English, easy to understand step by step procedures.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

A:Virtual Memory?

Virtual memory is space on the hard drive to make believe that you have more ram than you actually do. The low virtual memory message may indicate that you do not have enough actual ram.My personal recommended minimums for ram: Windows XP 512 Meg, Windows Vista, 2 gig, Windows 2000 512Meg, WinME & 98 128 Meg.Check this Tutorial, It has a good explanation on virtual memory.

I have a client who has had the "Virtual memory is low" issue forever. We have tried the following fixes:

Replaced RAM (stick was bad)
Replaced hard drive with a fresh install of the OS
Made sure plenty of space was available on the hard drive (50GB free)
Scanned for spyware
Scanned for viruses
Checked for programs hogging a lot of memory (found none)

Also changed the Virtual Memory settings via these instructions (from pcmag.com):

Right-click My Computer and choose Properties. Click the Advanced tab. Click the Settings button in the Performance panel. Click the Advanced tab in the Performance dialog. Click the Change button in the Virtual memory panel. Whew! This setting is buried quite thoroughly! Look for the System managed size option, select it if it isn't already selected, and then click OK, OK, OK. That should end the warnings.

Is there such thing as a motherboard having a memory leak?

Any experience with Earthlink's Total Access causing this?

What would you suggest trying next?

The computer has also started to freeze, even as it sits overnight when it is not being used. Scanned the hard drive for bad sectors. It passed. Suggestions?
