Q: Windows 7 + Quickbooks 2009 Pro + payroll functions

I have been advised by Intuit that QB 2009 Pro will function in Windows 7 but payroll will not...has anyone experienced this problem? It's the only thing stopping me from the upgrade to 7.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

After searching from the Intuit QuickBooks website, I find that Intuit QuickBooks 2009 is not fully compatible with Windows 7. The only version of QuickBooks that is compatible with Windows 7 is QuickBooks 2010. To fix the compatibility issue, Intuit’s Technical support suggests to upgrade to QuickBooks 2010. I also would like to suggest you try to run QuickBooks 2009 under Windows Vista Compatibility Mode.

1. Right-click the .exe file of the QuickBooks 2009 and choose Properties.
2. Click the "Compatibility" tab.
3. Please check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and choose "Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)".
4. Select "Run this program as an administrator" option under the Privilege Level.
5. Click Apply, click OK.

I have QB 2009 - we had a payroll tax subscription that calculated taxes and we filed our own reports. Suddenly it no longer works and I want to go back to manually calculating the taxes, inputting them and printing the checks. I used to be able to do this.

For 2 days I've been round and round with their tech support and I'm almost to tears every time I try to explain for the nth time and go thru the attempts to update for the nth time.

What is happening is that when I click Employees, pay unscheduled paycheck, then click an employee, it is telling me QB doesn't have all the info it needs and I then get stuck in a loop of screens asking me to verify the NM UI and withholding rates. I can never go past that to get into the paycheck creation screen.

One helpful soul tried to tell me that I would now have to do them through the WRITE CHECK screen. Is this correct? Or is there something else I can do to try to get back to doing it manually? That's going to be a pain if it's true.

I'm an accountant more or less, so I am familiar with all the accounts involved and rates and such.

UPDATE: For anyone else going thru this #@#%. FINALLY got a tech who actually helped. I had to go into each employee record, edit the tax info on that employee, remove the state taxes on the "Other" tab, and I was able to get into the create paycheck screen. Thanks to all the 91+ people who looked at my problem so fast!

I am working on Windows Vista and have loaded a new quickbooks program. I post the customer charges and partial payment. On the screen i can see the payments but when i print the invoice, the payments do not show. Help!!

When you say you post the charges and payment, do you mean that you entered them all on an invoice? If so, check the template and be sure that you have the payments box checked to print in the footer tab.

Note the template that you are using
click on lists at the top of the window
click on templates
RIGHT click on them template in question
Click on edit template
at the bottom of the window click on additional customization
If a window comes up to make a copy you are using a standard template that will not show payments
Click on Make copy
Click on the footer tab
Make sure there is a check mark in the print column for payments
You may want to put a check mark in balance due also for clarity of amount due
click ok

Okay, so all I did was move the quickbooks workbook file from my local hard disk drive, to the network attached storage drive, and now I suddenly can't log in.

More specifically, the limited username and password works, but I set that up AFTER moving the file...

Unfortunately, this is a limited user, so it cannot access everything... otherwise there wouldn't really be much of a problem.

So my question is, did I accidentally lose some file or something when I moved the quickbooks workbook file? Or is this some sort of horrible malfunction? I'm really not familiar with the software and have little to no understanding of it's permissions and how it stores it's different 'users' for each workbook, etc.

I'm about 2 minutes away from panicking here, because this quickbooks file is quite important, and we need to get back into it.

Hello there -

About a month ago, our laptop was infected with a bug that was very hard to mess with. It was called Windows Virus Remover 2009 and Antivirus Pro 2009.

It would try and sell us bogus virus protection by trotting out fake alarms and warnings. Like every 30 seconds. Very annoying. It also disabled all of our other antivirus programs, and would prevent us from downloading and installing new ones. I got SpyBot onto the laptop and ran it in Safe Mode. This fixed some of the issues. We no longer get the bogus warnings. We still, however, can't run some programs, like Malwarebytes and Root Repeal. The bug also disables our search capabilities in IE or Chrome. You search for "Spyware" and it takes you directly to an online casino out of Kazakhstan. The bug also plays random sound tracks from TV and radio from nowhere. We can't turn these off, because no media player pops up, and they're not embedded video on a web page; sounds just play from nothing.

So to sum up, we no longer have the most annoying problems associated with the malware, but there are many issues that remain and that I can't fix.

A:Upload QuickBooks 2010 company file to QuickBooks Online

Since you're running an older version of QuickBooks, it may not support it natively. Have a read here, and then try updating QuickBooks to see if they've patched it to include the option for exporting to QuickBooks Online. If that doesn't work, follow their options for downloading a trial version which will allow you to do the export.

Of course, before you do anything, ensure you do backups, backups, backups of your important data, and also save them offline on a flash drive, external HDD, or some other medium.

Once the software is upgraded, when you open the QB Data file you should get prompted to convert the file to 2007 format....are you getting any message like that? It won't be as simple as just opening it as before...it has to get converted....after that it should open normally.

Provide more detail on what messages you may be seeing.

* Note you should make sure your 2003 version of the data file is backed up so if you have to you can uninstall 2007 and put 2003 back in.

Twice over the past five months, when reconciling my QuickBooks Pro 2007 account with my bank statement, I have found that the tax amounts for two previously-reconciled paychecks have changed. My accountant, to whom I send my account in a QuickBooks Portable File and who uses a QuickBooks payroll program, says they have not made any changes. By checking backup, I have narrowed the time when these changes occur to the time that the portable file is used for payroll processing. Manually correcting the changed amounts is not an option since they revert to the changed amounts at the next payroll processing period. This seems to be an issue with QuickBooks payroll processing software. Has anyone else had such an experience and, if so, found the cause and a solution? The checks in question had been printed and reconciled at the time the changes occurred and the net pay had been "locked" so these changes should not have occurred.

I a little rusty but I'm trying to create an excel payroll spreadsheet and I'm running into formula issues at every turn. I'm trying to insert a formula that takes my gross income (L3) and calculates federal income tax withholding including deductions and to show the total in Fed W/H box (M3)

I am manually creating a payroll spreadsheet for our company (excel template). I want to add a column that tracks YTD so at the end of the year I can look at how much we spend on payroll. Example I would like cell "I5" to add what is in cell ($60) plus the new week total in cell "H5" ($150) to show a total of $210 in I5....I also want to keep a running total same type deal for the taxes.

Hi guys

I want to build an HR/Payroll system from scratch.
It needs to be similar to the one I use at the moment which is a website, it is a management information system that many people log in to, to enter and view data from.
For example
Manager A inputs shifts on to a rota for his team of 5 staff members.
The 5 staff members are able to log on to the site (as a basic view only role) which allows them to see what the manager has submitted for them for their monthly timesheet.
The data entered by Manager A and by Admin A about Employee A is able to be manipulated and presented in a pdf report. For example, if I want to know how many times Employee A has been off sick in the past year. Thankfully for me, Manager A has been putting Employee A's periods of sickness on the rota. The system lists these periods of sickness, and all their attributes, from the past 12 months, in a pdf report for me. It also does the same for holidays/annual leave. The system also gives me a pdf-able report of the employees training because Admin A has put on information about every course Employee A has done.

I can also, on my system role, upload documents for managers to view.

I can also export all timesheet entries by CSV so I can import it into another system (Sage).

I am not an experienced IT expert but I am willing to spend years learning how to do this.

At our company we accrue vacation over 10 months (Jan to Oct each year). The std Peachtree vacation formula assumes a full calendar year. I need help constructing a Peachtree formula that will stop accruing vacation after October. I can set the amount per check. Something as simple as the following concept:

IF (payroll date > 10/31/08, 0, 3.08) which would accrue 3.08 hours each pay period with a date less than 10/31/08. I don't know the syntax within the Peachtree software to make this happen.

I use Excel to prepare payroll for my staff. I have 12 workbooks, one for each month. Each workbook has 3 spreadsheets (departments). Each spreadsheet has 4 tables, one below the other depending how many weeks the month has. Each table has headings for name of employee, rate, social security... and so forth.

I am looking for a way to compile all these workbooks in a way such that I get a total (cumulative) for the entire year for every employee his/her total gross pay, social securities, and the count (no. of weeks worked) - all this into a single table, preferably new workbook.

If this can be done through Excel or Access, please help me. If not, can someone recommend me a payroll program where I prepare payroll, customize social securities, pay date, deductions, additions, hours/day pay by class and get monthly or annual reports such as I am asking.

I've searched high and low and still haven't been able to find the proper formula. I have a spreadsheet where I calculate ER SS tax for each EE for each pay period. I need a formula that is going to look at the YTD earnings and the wage base limit (106800) each week before calculating the formula. So what would a formula be to calculate 6.2% of wages this week taking into consideration that YTD wages are less than 106800, and when they do go over 106800, make the calculation 0, but keep prior week's taxes what they were. I am the new bookkeeper for a small company. Our local withholding rate has recently changed from 1.0% to 1.7%. I have changed this in the employee defaults, but it still is calculating the 1.0% in each paycheck. Even if I go into an individual employee record, the tax rate is still 1.0%, (after I've changed the defaults.) And, if I change the rate in the individual employee record, the change still doesn't 'take' in the payroll window. It does show the new rate in the employee record, but it's like Quickbooks isn't applying the changes through into the payroll module.

I've followed the Qbks help files, but it just says to change the defaults if the rate change applies to all/most employees. I'm not super familiar with Qbks yet, so maybe it's something easy that I'm missing.

It's been two years since I used QuickPayroll, which is included in QuickBooks, but what I remember is you have to go into the basic format designed to provide information to all payroll records.

I also found that Tech Support was VERY helpful. Have you tried calling them? Really patient with some of my stupid questions.

In attempting to run payroll yesterday, a window appeared stating "Payroll processing is not permitted when a run is already open in another period." Looking back into July, I found a Payroll Posting Log listed as "Incomplete" and the time on it was about one minute prior to the posting log that was actually posted. So I don't know what happened, maybe a momentary loss of power or wireless signal? The problem is, I can't find a way to access it in order to delete it or cancel it. I had to calculate payroll by hand, which means none of the withholdings, benefits, gross & net pay, etc., are updated.

Help! We no longer have support from Deltek, and can't afford to upgrade to Vision. If I can't access Payroll, one of the most important aspects of the program is gone.
(I have Windows XP Professional, Version 5.1.2600 w/SP2).

Background; Replaced the treasurer's laptop with an HP Probook 4350s. It of course comes with 7x64, 4 gigs, 7200/320. Not a bad machine. I was under the impression there was a newer version of Quickbooks available, haha jokes on me.

Most importantly run the programs back up on all 'company files'.
Running the install as admin* 1st notice from 7 warns you of known compatability issues. Proceed with install. You may get an error about a font. Do not run after install. After install locate the launch exe (qb) and set compatability to "XP sp3". Transfer the back-up files, I used a flash drive because I ran over the crossover with a chair. Before you launch and import you must have the following files from the old machine if they are not on your new machine;
They were located in different folders on XP but I just copied them to the Quickbooks main program files folder.
Why bother with such an older version of Quickbooks? Not my issue to answer, but this will buy the treasurer some time untill the app is upgraded.

*Not sure if running the install as admin was nessesary, but I did.

I dont really do enough accounts to justify purchasing a new package so I looked about
tried varied options and suggestions and settled on using
windows virtual PC with Windows XP Mode. ( XP mode is about a 0.5G download, virtual PC smaller.)

I have a 64 bit machine so this works fairly fast. the more ram the faster it will go.
It also allows for one click access to your 2004 quickbooks system from your windows 7 desktop.

Once you install the above just set up the quickbooks xp mode icon as a shortcut on your
desktop and bob's yer uncle, pure dead brilliant and all those other gr8 Scottish saying.

Gallas also springs to mind.

hi guys,

an accountant is insistent that friends of his has quickbooks 2002 working on windows 10 even though quickbooks dont say this is supported

i ran installation under compatibility settings for xp sp3 and it still was popping up all types of errors with installation...and it doesnt run,just pops up quickbooks logo and closes

i said they need to update quickbooks and the company files and this would take some time,now they say they calling a technician "who knows what they doing" to get it working on 10

im just trying to cover my bases here by asking you guys if there is anything else i can do to get this working quickbooks wont even uninstall now

i read something that a guy posted that quickbooks 2002 used to work on 10 ages ago before it was updated...any ideas

I'm running a Norwegian version of Windows 7 so I'm not 100% sure what the names are in English, but Ill try to explain.

I'm trying to install Office (tried both 2007 and 2010 verison) and they both give me the same error message. When I google the error message it says I need to update my frameworks. Then, when I try to download the latest it tells me I have to do it manualy from the "Turn Windows functions on and off" menu.

Problem is, when I open that dialog box it says: "Loading list" and then it dissapears but nothing new comes up. So there I am with an open window with no functions to do anything with.

And yes, I have run Win Update and there's nothing new I can download.

I tried posting on the Intuit forum which is a waste of time so far. They read file paths and names as "posting personal information or credit card numbers" so it is hard to ask for help when I cannot explain in detail all that has been tried so
far. I get carbon copy macro type responses that to me show they did not read what i posted. On my own, out of desperation, I found one thread there talking about Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 where you have to turn off Base Filtering Engine. IF I turn
off Windows Firewall and then turn off Base Filtering Engine, then the Windows Firewall stops blocking access, and I can log in to the company file hosted on this computer, from the other one on  the network. There are only two computers on the network,
this one where the file is hosted running Windows 7 Pro, and the other running Windows 7 home. We upgraded to Quickbooks Pro 2018 about 10 days ago, and it went fine, not one problem. May 9th we had no trouble connecting to the company file. Windows updated
May 10th, and on May 11th, this problem started. Quickbooks has a nice long list of files to grant access on specific ports, and I have manually entered them more than once, starting over, to try and fix this with no luck. They were all there already, so it

Are these two compatible? I keep getting a Flash player error. I have Flash player in Windows 8.1 enabled, but it seems QB 2010 is trying to do it through an older flash version? Either way it won't install due to a Flash Player error.

One suggestion is to go through QuickBooks support- there are links under the Main HOME button for Online version or Desktop version of QB

I have been using Quickbooks Pro 2007 on Windows XP for 9 months, but last month it stopped working. When I try to open the program the Quickbooks logo bar comes up with the dots that indicate it is initializing. When it gets to the point where it normally expands to the full program window to go to the welcome screen it simply closes itself and gives me the standard Windws error message: Quickbooks has encountered a problem and can't open." Nothing has changed that I am aware of. I have been searching for solutions for over a month and have not been able to figure out the problem.

Hi, it's me again.. after the previous successful contact with you I'm hoping you can help but am not sure whether this is a windows problem or the software itself - OS = Windows 7... Software = Quicken2002

After my success with Money with you, I am trying to get the same success with Quickbooks 2002.
When I load Quickbooks2002 it loads OK and then I adjust the administrator function OK (as with Money), but when I open the programme after rebooting, the programme opens but the "first/main" window is incomplete ( i.e. short cut icons are not there - and I get a window (within Quickbooks ?) named QBCenter which advises ....Run-time error - "O"
The main functions of the programme are fully accesible from the menu bar but the main short cut window in each business heading (i.e. Bank, Customers, Suppliers etc.) is not.
Is this a windows or Intuit problem ?
As I say I can manage by accesing the menus but it is not perfect
Any help/advice would be appreciated

Only QuickBooks 2011 and 2010 (Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions) are designed to be compatible with Windows 7. You can still install and run QuickBooks 2008 and 2009 on Windows 7, but be aware that you may encounter problems we cannot resolve.


If Quickbooks 2008 and 2009 have issues with Windows 7, it is safe to assume that QB 2002 does as well + more.

I upgraded from Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit.  Now I can't email invoices or save my invoices via "Save as PDF" in Quickbooks.  I've researched it online and it seems to be a known problem with other W7 but no solution from QBs.  Found some user solutions about PDF converter problem but none work. Was working fine before upgrade.  Here's the Quickbooks error I get: Printer not activated, error code - 20; then I press Ok and get: Could not print to printer.  Check your printer selection.  Printing may have been canceled from another program. then I press Ok and get: Problem Your forms were not sent b/c QB could not create the necessary PDF files. Solution You should be able to solve this problem by exiting and restarting QB, and then sedning the forms again.  For more information, click Help. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

like cut and paste. Basically, I have half a terabyte of stuff to extract files from. I need the .doc and the .mp3 files from. I did a search with microsofts search in Winxp, but many files could not be copied and pasted into a folder that was on a hard drive for good files.

I kept getting the error "cannot read from source" and all the other crap when you try to cut and paste from the search function. I have tried google's search, but no cutting the files. They are scattered all over, not in just one directory.

If anyone knows of something that works, I would be most grateful.

I recently installed XP Professional on my Dell Dimension 3000 computer. It has 512 ram, 3.0 with H/T . After uninstalling an application and then clicking start then search it goes to a Window search page that I have never seen before. I then scroll down to the bottom of the page and use the search companion to do the search. The search companion page is what I am familiar with from using my previous XP Home system. I type in the search words and then start the search. It will find what I am looking for but then continues scanning and scanning and will not stop even after 1 hour of searching.

Is there anyway to stop it from searching, even after finding the items without manually pressing the stop button. Also is there a way to make it go straight to the Search Companion page instead of the Windows search page and then having to scroll to the bottom to use Search companion anyway.

When you installed XP Pro, was it an upgrade from a previous Windows operating system or a fresh install?

Did I understand correctly that this started after you uninstalled an application? What did you uninstall and how did you uninstall it?

If these problems followed the deinstallation of an application, please see if there is a restore point you can go back to that just precedes this de-installation. If you've never done this, go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore
Select the option to Return my computer to an earlier restore point and click on next. Those dates with a restore point (or several restore points) will be highlighted. Select one of these which occurred before the problem started and follow the prompts. If this does not solve the problem, you can undo this process by going to System Restore as instructed above and selecting the option to undo the change.

Hello. I don't even know for sure how to described this problem. It started with the av2009, which i was able to successfully remove. then, I suppose it had an affect on my AVG Anti-Virus Free program, because I started getting a popup for the Resident Shield Alert. I got rid of that through Microsoft's tech support via telephone, by pcsafety scan and by installing and running SuperAntiSpyware program, but somehow I now have lost the ability for certain functions. The first thing I noticed was that I can no longer view "smilies" in emails, nor can I see them when I send them (only the box with the x appears instead). Then I noticed that any emails I receive with pictures showed the box with the x wherever pictures or banners should be. Then I noticed the same thing on some websites; the box or just that some of the page was not able to completely download. I also noticed that when I go onto a website like facebook, I can no longer easily send messages or view my inbox or use the applications on the site. The list is expanding as we speak, and whereas I was trying to resolve these issues while I had Microsoft on the phone, POOF! Just as usual, I suddenly get disconnected when they realize they either made a mistake or just can't figure out the problem. Oh well. So, I came here in the hopes of some insight. So what i want to do is change my key functions on my keyboard (example: rather than ctrl-c i want to use command-c "aka windows-c")but i dont want to change the command key to be ctrl but make it so windows recognizes it as copy when i push command-c also want to change other stuff like ctrl-alt-del and paste and closing windows

the reason i dont want to change command to ctrl is if im in an application that i need to control i want to be able to hit the actual ctrl key

i basicly want to make my windows feel a little more like macintosh not in the way of looks but function of keys

hope it makes sence and hope someone knows how to do it

I have been using 8.1 Mailbox now since the update, but strangely the go-to function within the e-mail text has stopped working. Anything outside the text seems to work well, but even though highlighted the information within the text frame is inactive.

Would welcome any information on how to correct this.

Have since discovered these go-to functions are called Hyperlinks and the best way of reactivating them is the deletion of certain registry keys. That is Run: Regedit HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Classes\CLSID. Deletion of those keys beginning 8---. I have done this but the Hyperlinks still don't work, do I delete all the items in this class?
