Windows keep deselecting themselves

Q: Windows keep deselecting themselves

A few months ago any Window I had open would deselect and select themselves making typing impossible. I started using combofix which seemed to fix the problem for a session but would come back the next time I booted up, I don't know what the log from combo fix means but it works. I ran combofix today but it didn't fix the problem so I'm desperate to find anyone who knows what is causing it so I can finally fix it, thank you

Preferred Solution: Windows keep deselecting themselves

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows keep deselecting themselves

Possible stuck key(s) on the mouse or keyboard. You can try to tap each key on the keyboard a few times to unstick the key, the same goes for the mouse. Generally the windows key, Alt key or Tab key may cause this issue.

Any active windows I have open keep deselecting themselves. This happens in chrome and any other windows I have open (eg.Word) My webpages are NOT redirecting.
It was much worse about a month ago when I was having issues with McAfee (the annoying white screen problem) and once this was solved it got much better.
However I have noticed it is still doing this every few minutes. I know something is drawing focus, but I don't know how to find out what is causing it.
I have run Spyware S&D, but turned up nothing out of the ordinary. I use Windows 7.

I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you.
Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us
Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs,  unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.

Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.

Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.

Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

So about a week or so ago I started noticing that I'd be typing in a browser window and the window would be deselected in the middle of typing. I'd then click the window again to continue typing and the same thing happens. Very irritating. Fortunately, it usually only lasts 5-10 clicks (meaning I have to reselect the window 5-10 times before it stops).

I did a google search and read that sometimes mice cause this. I have turned off my wireless mouse and used a wired remote, but that didn't solve the problem. I have scanned my computer using AVG, and found two Trojans embedded in some Java files, but I cleared those out and that didn't fix the problem.

I decided to run HijackThis and see if maybe something else is going on. Can anyone see something that might be causing this? (While writing this it occurred two separate times).

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.
I noticed a few weeks ago that any open windows had started deselecting themselves. The problem was much worse a few weeks ago, when I was having problems with McAfee. Once I got these sorted I noticed that the problem had eased, but it hasn't gone completely.
Any help would be very much appreciated!

Apologies if this is the wrong place for this.
I've noticed in the last month or so that any open windows keep deselecting. This problem was much worse when I was having problems with McAfee, and seemed to stop once I solved those.
However I have noticed that it is still occurring, just not as often. This happens in Chrome and in Windows.
Any tips as to how I can stop this would be much appreciated.

If I have multiple windows open, e.g I have internet explorer, normal explorer and an app running. Two of them are minimised and I'm typing on internet explorer window. The internet explorer window will keep going off highlight as if I've selected the app or explorer, leave it a few seconds then it highlights the internet explorer window again, then deselects it etc etc

I've tried a complete scan with Malware Bytes incase this is malware but it's not finding anything. Has anyone else experienced this?

A:Windows keep selecting and deselecting themselves

Could be a feature and not a problem. You may have paid for this
The lower right of the screen. You will see a very small and faint tranparent box. If you put your cursor there, you can see your desktop. It shows your desktop. It is a way to get quick access to your desktop. Is that it.
You can turn it off by right clicking it and untick

Look very hard the box is there, very small and in the right corner.

I currently having a VERY annoying issue with my computer. Every 5-10 seconds, the window that I have selected stops being selected and I have to click on the window again to reselect it.
I suspect that it is a malware, I spent most of the afternoon looking for an issue, downloaded a few antiviruses, but nothing seems to solve the problem.
The window that is currently selected doesnt seem to matter,be it Firefox, Word, Windows Explorer, I even have problems with Dota 2 constantly alt-tabbing.
I hope someone knows a way to fix this, writing this took over ten minutes because I have to click on this window every 5 seconds.

Hi, hope this makes some sense - it's driving me crazy.

had this problem for about a week on one of my PCs;

Using WinXP sp2, latest firefox

was playing a full screen game and suddenly it minimised onto the takbar, this kept happening repetedly and at random. I thought it was the game, however I then noticed that if I have two windows (firefox/IE/windows folder/file copy progress window....) open the one that is currently selected will suddenly grey out as if deselected, but nothing else will be selected (have focus) and after a few seconds it will switch back to how it was. This seems to happen for all games as well. So i visited google, downloaded TweakUI, installed and told it not to let programs steal focus, worked fine for about ten mins - just long enough for me to think it's fixed then it starts again. tried running ad aware, webroot spysweeper and panda scan, picked up a few minor threats but not much and didn't solve the problem. Downloaded Comodo ran it, and that picked up one more threat, but still didn't solve the problem. If anyone can help that would be great, or if you need more info let me know.

Strange things have been happening lately. On Windows 7, any program whether it be a game or an internet browser seems to spontaneously deselect such as a game suddenly switching out to desktop forcing me to select the program again. Strange things like this can suddenly interrupt my typing in a word processor. Is there something I have to do to fix such a problem?

I NEED HELP ITS VERY FRUSTRATING plus i am in university and it will be very hard for me!

A:Cursor keeps deselecting windows randomly

Do you have a Restore Point dated before the installs? Assuming you have the product key and can reinstall those two programs I would uninstall them one at a time. Check if the symptom disappears. If not then I'd try the restore point if available.

Edit: It may also be a good idea to look at the Programs and Features(Winkey-x top of the menu) in chronological order. Some small utility may not be malware. It could just have a bad bug. Process of elimination may pick it off uninstalling those installed about the same time as the two programs you mentioned.

I am seeing an issue where any window I am working/watching something in, in any application, will deselect, causing me to have to click in the window to continue typing / scrolling / resume full screen / what have you. This is occurring at (seemingly exact) 40 second intervals, which I know from checking the time between each event while watching a video. It is extremely annoying.
Other potentially related symptoms that have popped up around the same time are the mouse cursor "arrow" will switch to the "loading arrow"  even while there is nothing for my computer to be loading. This seems to be out of sync with the deselecting. Additionally my Microsoft Security Essentials is telling me I haven't run a scan for a while, even after running multiple quick scans, and scheduled full scans every night at 2am.
I recently added the screencast extension for Google Chrome, but have removed it after encountering the issue.
I have tried using a different mouse and keyboard.
I have run scans with

§  Microsoft security essentials
§  Spybot Search and Destroy
and used the cleaner and registry cleaner utilities of CCleaner.

Periodically my Screen redirects out of any screen I am in.  It does not close the open program but rather deselects it and it can happen in the middle of me playing a game such as Starcraft 2 or just taking my cursor out of the current browser/prompt that I'm typing in.
The hard part is, it is very inconsistent.  At the moment right now, it is not doing it.  I have disabled as many auto updates as I could think of (windows and Nvidia as well as Java and a divX updater.).
Not sure what other direction I could go with this as I have nortons installed and running.  I have ran several other programs and been searching online for a fix to no avail.  It has done this since I build the computer a couple of months ago and has worked this way since initial installation so I find it hard to believe that its a virus or malware so any help would be appreciated.

I read the expired thread at http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/626098-windows-keep-deselecting.html and, since I had the same problem, tried the suggestions in the thread.

They did not fix the problem.

What did fix it was running TweakUI and unselecting
"Mouse", "X-Mouse" and "Activation follows mouse".

The attached image is self-explanatory.

When X-mouse style window activation is enabled,
just moving the mouse over a windows will give it focus.

Naturally, moving the mouse outside a window will defocus it.

Simple solution, once that's clearly understood.

Hi, I've been having this problem for quite a while now. I'm not sure quite how to call it, I think it's something like window overriding or something. Anyway, here's what's happening. As I'm typing in any window, whether it be internet explorer, chrome, microsoft word, etc..a couple of seconds later I hear DING DING DING...

The flashing typing bar is no longer there and the top of the window is brighter. The program is no longer selected and I'm now just typing in windows explorer, making the ding sounds. I would have to click on the window again and the top of the window now darkens and I can begin typing, until a couple of seconds or minutes later DING DING DING.

This happens to every program that's in a window and does not happen to any full screen applications such as games, although this does happen in games that are in windowed mode. This really gets annoying especially if you're typing in a report, I can no longer have a smooth typing experience because every other minute or so I would have to click on the window again to begin typing.

I remember I googled this once a while ago...I forget what it was called but I remember something like the window overriding. Apparently I don't think it's exactly called that because google shows no relevant results. Windows XP had a program you can download from Microsoft to stop windows from overriding each other, Windows 7 doesn't have that. Anyone know how to fix this?

I don't know how else to explain it other than my mouse/Windows is deselecting. It keeps happening even if as I type this. Basically when typing in a box like this everything will stop and windows will make the audio beep when your typing to nothing. It is like I'ld have clicked my desktop.

The mouse doesn't do it on other computers and it isn't randomly clicking. If I leave the cursor on the text box it still does it.

Update: I spent a while searching and came across someone who was having the same issue. For them they had installed a wireless card and it was grabbing the attention and un-selecting screens.

On my new pc I also got a wireless card and I believe it may be doing the same thing (the utility that is) so I have turned it off the utility. So far it has been working great! Been running fine for about 10 minutes, and it was un-selecting about once a minute earlier.

my computer, even from start up. when nothing is running does a series of bleeps, with about a second between each one. and it happens every 5-10 mins. and sometimes it deselects the window?

dunno whats going. on. i don't have a virus???

A:Beeps and deselecting

I doubt it's a virus . If the beeps start from when you switch your computer on (before you get to Windows) then it's a system error . Have you got an expansion graphics card or is your monitor plugged into a built in port on the motherboard ?

Ok so while playing some of my games, the screen keeps deselecting. It just started happening recently and is very annoying while trying to play with other people. I just did a malware scan and such and have found nothing. I am attaching my hijack this post. Let me know if you need any more info, thanks.

Around Christmas time, I bought an ATI Radeon 9550 256MB video card. I finally got around to installing it and (after having some major problems getting the driver/software pack installed) got everything up and running. Let me tell you... I will NEVER buy another ATI product, no matter how loudly they are cheered for quality. Not only was it ridiculously difficult to get the software installed (I DLed the newest version and got an error about not having a version of .NET installed, but it still wouldn't work even after installing .NET...finally just used the default software on the CD), but ever since I installed the software, everytime my browser (Firefox) loads a page, it becomes deselected and I have to click somewhere on the page just to interact with the page in the first place... for example, clicking a button to post to a forum...and having to click the text window to start typing, instead of just typing.

Now some of the sites I frequent cause me to make numerous page changes and having to click TWICE as often, just to get around is ridiculous, not to mention very inconvenient...

Can anyone give me any suggestions? Do you think completely uninstalling all of the software ATI provided (I already removed the one I thought was causing it... no effect), and just installing the drivers might fix it? Or do you think a total reinstall of Firefox might do it? Or is there just some setting I need to set? Anyone?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a huge problem with my computer at the moment if any one can help... :

1) I can start my PC up Listen music, watch videos, web browse, But as soon as I open a game like dota or cod4mw1, I can join chat/look at games but as soon as I join a game it freezes or just shuts down. The 'CoreTemp' app I have only says its at 34 degrees it freezes... Any Ideas please?

2) When im typing like now annoying (If I have iTunes open) it decides to deselect the programme I am using (web), and then 5 seconds later reselect it making it hard for me to type out stuff... Do you think the Issue could be due to an old version of iTunes, Because at the same time if I open a game and minimize to change song and get back in it will continually minimize my game until I close iTunes...

Please Help!
Regards Nick.

A:Audio Popups And Browser Deselecting

Hi,I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed! This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. That's why I want you to install one first!!* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/This is a free Antivirus.Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding. Then reboot. After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog. Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

I don't know which better way to word this, but that my windows are twitching and sometimes deselects for no apparent reason, especially when I play video games. The games twitch and shows the background of the computer. I put the video games in window mode, but now the game randomly deselects and twitches too. I don't know what to do. I noticed that my video games twitch more when I press on the keys, command my characters to do something, or click. However, if I minimize the game and go on the internet, the browser does not twitch or randomly deselect. It only happens with games.

This computer is dell windows vista. The games I am playing are Maplestory and Perfect World. I bought this computer in 2009 around fall. The programs running in the background are Network 3 internet access, AVG antivirus, the volume (speakers).

It just happened recently. It may have to do with Teamspeak2 which I downloaded a few days ago. The twitching just happened last night around 10 pm.

I had this problem myself. I searched Google to resolve the issue but I I found nothing on this problem so I thought I'd post my fix.

Go into safe mode and run a program to see if it still does the same problem. If it doesn't then this is a good thing. Go back into normal mode and close program icons in the right of the task bar one at a time. Each time check to see if the problem happens. When it stops happening the last program you closed will be causing the issue. (mine was Tenda - Wireless dongle program). Either reinstall the program or leave it uninstalled. I didn't need it so I just uninstalled Tenda.

Recently I have started playing fullscreen games such as neverwinter nights 2 (high five if you play this!) However, whenever I do so, every 2-3 minutes the game will minimize, and crash it if it is neverwinter nights (and this game has no autosave! ) And to add on to the annoyance, whenever i enter a browser(is the word?) like microsoft, or something like minecraft, every 2-3 minutes it acts as if I clicked out of it (deselecting). So in other words, I am playing minecraft, and a horde of pigmen are attacking me, when it deselects my game and puts me in the menu (and i play ONLY online). I read into this a lot, and i started to get rid of excess things like microsoft office, but it didnt help. If anyone knows of the program, or knows of a program that can tell me what opens and closes and when, then I will be BEYOND grateful.

Hiya there guys!

My partner's mouse keeps disappearing when she types on her PC, almost the exact same physical and software-based machine as myself where I don't have any problems.

When she starts typing the mouse disappears and un-clicks the program she was on, this means basically if you were to have a program open then were to click the desktop so no programs are selected, this is what happens, but automatically while typing.

Also when I say it disappears and deselects I mean on literally anything; Browsers (Firefox, Opera, IE, Chrome), Microsoft Word, Spotify (search box), etc.

Under (Control Panel > Mouse > Pointer Options > Visibility > Hide pointer while typing) this check box is obviously unchecked, first thing I went too and I have tried other subtle fixes but nothing seems to do anything, please help!

Her OS:
Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit: Fully Updated According to Windows Update

A:Mouse Keeps Disappearing (and Deselecting) When Typing On Any Program

Yes, Control Panel > Mouse > Pointer Options > Visibility > Hide pointer while typing should be unchecked.
but mouse/keyboard may have some custom program installed where you can change this.

there is also one option under: Control Panel > Mouse > Pointer Options > Pointers > Allow themes to change mouse pointer checkBox

so if you have some theme installed which changes this, then you may uncheck this checkBox or change theme.

Hi I have edited my original post since I have narrowed down the problem a little.

Essentially which ever app I am working in de-selects itself (blue title bar goes grey) automatically for about 3-5 seconds, or indefinitely when my automatic send receive happens in outlook. This is very frequent as it checks for mail every 3mins.

This is very frustrating as in Mozilla I have to re-click the window to re-activate it, or I can be in the middle of typing a lot of text in word for instance and non of it has been inputted, because of the window being de-activated while I have been looking at the keyboard.

Any ideas why this is happening? Is it a setting in outlook or some virus scan perhaps? I use zone alarm. Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Bizarre Problem, with window automatically deselecting

Hello Bewdy

This is called "stealing focus" and Outlook seems to often be guilty of this.

The only way I have seen to overcome the problem is by using Tweak UI . It is freely available software provided by Microsoft. Tweak UI is used to make a number of changes to your system that would otherwise require edits to the registry.

1.Download Tweak UI from Microsoft. Scroll down the page and look for it on the right-hand side.

2. Click on Focus.

3. On the right, check the Prevent applications from stealing focus checkbox and then click the OK button.

4. From this point forward, Outlook/programs should no longer steal the focus from the window that you're currently working in.

I've got a persistent problem with my computer where every few seconds the window I am currently on appears to deselect and reselect so the bar at the top keeps flashing. I could live with this but it also seems to happen when I right-click on anything and closes the box so it's almost impossible to close items on the toolbar or open any programs from quick launch.

If I try to select a group of items it'll randomly stop when I'm trying to highlight them all, even if I manage to highlight them all it'll then deselect them. Most annoying is if I'm typing into the search box for google it'll select all the text in the box making me replace it. Trying to rename any files is impossible as it keeps thinking I've clicked off and you have to be quick doing one letter at a time.

It appears something is causing windows to switch to something else and back quickly. What it is I ain't sure. Anyone else had this problem and managed to solve it?

I'm running Vista-64bit.

Okay, I have had this computer a long time, it's always been an XP machine, though I upgraded to XP Pro recently, SP3 of course. Earlier this year, or maybe late last year, my fiance upgraded my whole computer for me, the only hardware that's the same is the hard drive, which is now a secondary hard drive, since they had to install a different hard drive to put the OS on. Don't ask me why, I don't get it, but it just wouldn't load on the old HD, probably because it already had an OS on it? Anyway, it's been fine this whole time, but yesterday my start menu started freaking out. I'd click Start, and the menu would pop up, then almost immediately disappear. If I'm quick enough, I can click on All Programs and then it will open the program list and stay open, which is nice. I figured I had a virus, so I tried opening my virus scanners to clean it up. They found a few things, but it didn't fix the start menu. I also noticed that any windows I have open will blink, like a program is trying to open in the foreground, but then doesn't. I looked online and tried checking my mouse, since some people in 2009 had said it was a glitchy mouse button, but that wasn't it. Then I tried booting in safe mode, running Avira Anti-Vir, and Spybot S&D. I found two more serious-sounding bugs and cleaned them up, but still no avail with the start menu and windows blinking. I did notice that these problems only occur in normal boot mode, not Safe Mode. ... Read more

A:Start Menu, right-click, text boxes closing/deselecting constantly

Also, I found out that when i shut my computer down (after a lot of effort trying to click it fast enough), I get an error that says Svchost.exe - DLL something or other, and says that the application failed to initialize since I'm shutting down. That's when I figured that I must have some corrupted file trying to open constantly, but crashing instead. Problem is, since it's a svchost.exe, I have no idea how to figure out what program is the one crashing or how to fix it. I saw someone else having a similar issue, but with more errors, and tried the steps to solving theirs, but it didn't help me (something to do with ipv6, which wasn't even installed on my computer). I'm still drawing blanks here.
