BSOD - File Transfer to USB drive

Q: BSOD - File Transfer to USB drive

This has happened on all versions of Windows 7. Upgrading and fresh install has the same results.

Transferring a 45GB file to a USB drive will sometimes transfer to 25% then I get a white screen causing me to reboot. Sometimes the screen stays gray and if I have any open windows they flash black. There are times when the file actually completes, however the status bar hangs at around 25%.

If someone could check out this dump file and assist I would be grateful.

TIA...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: BSOD - File Transfer to USB drive

Ok, new install not allowing Windows to update anything on install. The problem still exists. The problem is not just with file transfers to a USB drive, but transfers from any drive to any drive causes the transfer window to stop, the screen goes black and then any open window stays black and the screen flashes gray. Sometimes just before the whole screen goes black about 1" of the top of my screen turns black. I've also got a solid white screen causing me to reboot. I've also got a BSOD that auto reboots throwing a recovery error.

This is really frustrating because Windows 7 runs so well except this one problem. I'm guessing that I may need to wait for the official release as this problem shouldn't exist in the RTM. I have absolutely no problems with Vista so why in the heck is Windows 7 having this problem. I know it's BETA and these problems exist. I now others are having these problems and I hope MS has them resolved so, I'm installing 7127 and I see there is another later release, so I'm off to see it has this problem.

I'm using Windows xp sp2 and a couple of days ago I tried to copy a wav music track from a cd in my cd drive onto one of my hard drives(not the hard drive with windows on it) it gave a message saying unable to complete due to hardware connection being interrupted
since then the Cd drive and Harddrive I was copying too work only intermittently and for a short time. If you try and copy anything too or from the drive it will start working and then stop.
I think this is a virus problem but aren't completely sure as I've run spyware doctor which found a couple of viruses, but the problem continues despite removing them
thanks. hope someone can help

Hi,

So a couple of days ago my laptop encountered a BSOD when transferring large files to an external hard drive. the time I was using Teracopy and during the file transfer would hang a while before the crash occurred. I first thought that Teracopy might be damaged and removed it.

However Windows own file transfer ended up doing the exact same thing. I then thought it might be a problem with the drivers and so I began updating them using SlimDrivers. Updating the drivers also caused a BSOD, typically when trying to update the Realtek HDMI Audio Driver.

I decided to check my RAM next so I ran Memtest86+ on both sticks individually but both came back clean. I ran the Windows disk check on the hard drive and it also came back without issue.

However, I then ran HD Tune and it showed up several bad blocks.

I have a screen shot of the BSOD screen as well.

I've attached the ZIP folder from the diagnostic tool also. Any help you could provide me would be appreciated. I use the laptop for work and I'm stuck with the BSOD coming up every so often.

A:BSOD on File Transfer

The zip contains no crash dump. But a stop 0x7A, Kernel Data Inpage Error (as per the screenshot) often caused caused by a failing HDD, and as you know that there are some bad blocks on your 250 GB Hitachi HDD, better you replace it.

But, you may try a disc check that will attempt a recovery of the bad sectors as stated in Option 1 Point 6 of the tutorial Disk Check.

I had this issue with vista also, currently running windows 7 build 7600. Bought a WD MyworldbookII NAS, if i try to transfer large files to it via networked drive i get a bsod. if i use a ftp method everything works fine, Keep in mind its totally random and not dependent on file name or file size(I found something in the vista forums about file name), also i cant duplicate the error with the same file. sometimes it does it sometimes it doesn't, totally random. i have the latest firmware for the nas as well as the latest driver for my intell wifi link 5300AGN driver version 13.0.0.107. i have read some issue with broadcomm drivers ....but seeing as i only use a wireless connection i didn't believe it was related, but i do have a broadcomm netlink gigabit ethernet connection using driver version 11.22.0.2. Hi and welcome

This crash was probably caused by your wifi driver. It crashed the hardware abstraction layer and the system puked and died. Your system has serval old drivers and I would update them all.

I would also run a system file check by typing cmd in search>right click and run as admin
SFC /SCANNOW

It was taking a while so I closed the lid and just let it do its thing while I left and did something else. After I assumed it had finished I came back and opened the lid, only to be greeted with the log-in screen. When I logged in I got this prompt telling me that my PC had rebooted from a bugcheck. Turns out, there was a BSOD during the middle of my file transfer. I would be very grateful if someone could take a look at my attached dump files and tell me what the problem was. Get the drive test utility from the manufacturers website and run it. If it fails you may be able to low-level format the drive and make it useable again. All data would be lost though

I just bought a Western Digital 250 GB My Book for my PC. It is connected through a USB 2.0 PCI hub that had not caused me any problems with my iPod in the past. When I transfer files from my Boot drive to the external everything goes very smoothly and quickly. However, when I try to transfer back to the Boot drive it takes forever. I tried to transfer a 350 Mb video file and I let it run overnight and 8 hours later it was still less than half done and it said it would take another 183 minutes, exactly what it said when I left it the night before. Is there some way to make file transferring faster, or for that matter even possible between these two drives. I'm going nuts because I moved all of my digital pictures onto this drive and if this is a permanent problem then I need to figure out how to retrieve them.

A:External hard drive file transfer

Try to bypass the USB hub and connect it directly to your computer. See if that makes a faster transfer or not.

I just recently installed Windows 7 Home Premium on this PC: AMD Athlon64 X2 5600+ @2.9Ghz 4GB DDR667 Asus M2N-X motherboard (nforce 520 chipset) Radeon 3450 PCI-E 512MB 250GB Segate HDD Primary internal 250GB LaCie HDD USB 2.0 external (System in AHCI mode) Whenever I attempt to copy files to the LaCie external, the transfer freezes at some point (usually early on), Both cores are maxed to nearly 100% and I get an assload of Event ID 51 errors and another error for ntfs (can't remember ID). If I open the resource monitor, I see the cpu hog is "system interrupts - deferred procedure calls and interrupt service routines". CPU racing will continue until you shut down. Most of the time, I have to hard shutdown. This same hardware performs flawlessly on Vista 64-bit SP2 so its not a hardware malfunction. All drivers are OS supplied as Nvida didn't release Win7 versions for my chipset. So is this problem a compatibility issue with LaCie or is it affecting other external USB drives as well? I had to rollback to Vista since I have no way to backup my data till this is resolved.

A:File transfer freezes when copying to Lacie USB Drive

I'm not sure about this, and its only a last ditch resort, and I dont know the setup with nforce boards, but i was thinking having AHCI enabled in the bios maybe the cause of the problem, but to change it to sata as IDE you need to reinstall the OS and truthfully I dont know whether this will fix the problem.

Are you running W7 and cant use the Lacie usb drive, or have you gone back to vista, and it doesnt work now, or do you want to return to w7 but cant because of the drive?

There should be more reply's so wait to see what others have to say.

I recently installed a new "WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive" for additional PC storage. Used regular sata cable to motherboard & sata power cable connector to power supply unit.
OK, so the new drive didn't appear in Computer upon 1st boot, so I went in through Disk Management to format drive,
Did it as GPT Disk (as >2Tb) and all went to plan. Until I started transferring files onto it. Started ok (64Mb/s) but after about 30 seconds noticed transfer activity not changing. Eventually error message came up stating new file location did not exist, and the drive had disappeared from Computer.
Restarted and back it was. But same thing happened - no matter what size file I chose to transfer.
Reformatted disk. Same thing happened.
Converted to MBR disk, the disk was split in two (and by the way it only let me format one of them). Tried transferring again - same deal. The last time I noticed the transfer started at 128Mb/s and slowly crept down to 27Mb/s and stayed there until the error came up. Not sure if that hadn't happen previously.
Anyway, I fear the drive is a dud - or my initial formatting screwed with something. Or it could be connections to the motherboard/power supply?
Will be a little bit of a work up to open her up again to check connections, so just wanted to see if any of you Uber tech-savvy Demigods could shine a light on any of this before I have to do so.

Hi all

The other day I bought my dad a flash drive (Kingston, 2 Gb) for him to back-up all his files. There are about 180 files, all either MS Word, Access or Excel documents and in total come to around 50 Mb.

I selected alll files in the relevant folder and dragged/dropped to the flash drive. To cut a long story short, I managed to copy all apart from 17 of them. For some reason whenever I try one of these 17 I get the message "Unable to copy [filename]. The file could not be created." or words to that effect.

These 17 files seem no different from any of those that were copied succesfully- they're the same format, created on the same PC with the same software. They can all be accessed/edited ok and so are not obviously corrupt. I tried creating a new file and copying info from one of the rogue 17 into this, them copying the new file across to the flash drive, but I get the same error. I thought this must mean there's something wrong with the data/how it's been entered but it seems to be exactly the same format/arrangement as the data in the files that have copied ok.

Does anybody know what's going on?

Issue :Copying data from one drive to another via any hub on system resolves in the following :

When transferring from one particular hard drive I select the files I wish to copy.

Go to destination drive and paste.

Starts ok and then the system reports files no longer there and popup windows shows :

Could not find this item.
This is no longer located in H:\. Veriofy the item's location and try again.

Actions:

[Retry] repeats the popup.
[Skip] copies all the folders to the destination drive with no content so shows all directories but not files/data within. Not hidden as copies in a matter of seconds.
[cancel] : well cancels.

Go back to the origin drive and all folders and data are there in tact.

Unmounted drive and the drive still appears in the MyComputer hard drive and folder structure. Displays files listed as if there. Click on the files and of course missing...the hard drive isn't even connected at this point.

You can try going into device manager and turn on "view hidden devices" via the view menu. Who knows, maybe you'll get a different drive letter assignment this time. I dont remmy if there is a limit for NTFS or not, but that is probably the issue.

I have a HP HPE-510t. It is running windows 10, clean install. I have a 240GB SSD, a 1TB SATA drive, and a 3TB SATA drive. All are NTFS formatted. If I transfer a 1GB file to the 3TB drive it makes it to 50% lightning quick and then slows down so slow it looks like it has stopped. Other two drives work fine. Files 560MB and smaller transfer fine. I don't know where the exact breaking point is between 560 and 1GB. Transfers to that drive do the same thing whether it's from those drives, a USB drive, or the network. Can this motherboard just not handle a larger than 2TB drive? I tried to find a BIOS update, but there's not one. Can't find an answer, going crazy, please help!

A:is my hard disc drive file transfer rate normal or has it gotten slower?

That sounds normal for copying files back to itself. Speeds always start off higher while the buffer is in use.

I'm having trouble watching video from one of my hard drives (XP). At first I thought it was a codec problem so I uninstalled and reinstalled the codecs but that never worked.
Then I tried watching video on the other hard drive and no problem there.

I confirmed that its a hard drive problem when I tried to copy one of the files from the problematic hard drive, it showed 30mins left where it normally takes 1-2mins.

I checked to see if the channel was in PIO mode but all are in DMA.

Any way around this ?

Dear All,
I have a problem where i am having 2 application server clustered and both using a common file folder (residing on one app server and access by other through mapping network drive). This common shared folder is storing some files used in application. Now my problem is that because of sharing folder this way, my application starts running slowly and performance is hampered. It application actually stop running as file is not getting opened. If i remove the clustering and just work with one app server (ofcourse file folder residing on the same server) it works fine. Can somebody tell me what can be the problem if i access the files through mapped network drive. I am using windows server 2K with 2 GB RAM.

Appreciate the help on this.

I have 2 PCs, both running XP Pro SP2.
One is mine and one is my wife?s.
Both are connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 v3 router which is then connected to a cable modem.
Both can connect at high speed to the internet.
Both are on the same workgroup and have unique names.
They can see each other in the workgroup.
They can ping each other.
I can browse all shared drives in both directions from both PCs.
Everything seems to be working perfectly except if I try and transfer a file from my PC to my wife?s it takes approx 2 minutes per MB. However if I transfer a file the other way it works flawlessly and at high speed.

I have checked that all the required services are running and that there is only one master browser.

I have changed all the cables and tried different ports on the router.

NetMeter shows a maximum transfer speed of about 250kbps and the networking tab in task manager shows a network utilization of only 1%

Any advice would be gratefully received, as this is slowly driving me insane.

A:Slow file transfer in one direction, quick transfer the other way!

You should try data transfer using something other than WInbdows Networking. Set up some FTP server software for example. This way you can see if the problem is with the network or with Windows.

Disable software firewalls and antivirus on the computers?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.. I didn't really know what to put it under..

I was upgrading my system, from XP to Vista. I tried the 'keep all my current files and settings' option for the upload, but it wouldn't let me use it.
So, I used the file and settings transfer wizard to transfer all my files to my external hard drive. Then I deleated my files on my computer - no point in having two copies. (I now know how stupid this idea was).
When I had successfuly uploaded Widows vista onto my computer, I found that it didn't actualy have the files and settings transfer wizard - it had something called 'Easy Transfer' instead. Easy tranfer is incompatible with the File and settings transfer wizard.

So, now all my files are sitting on my Hard drive in .dat files, and I don't know how to get them back.

Help me please.
Thanks

A:File and Settings Transfer Wizard vs. Easy Transfer

you could download and install FAST to complete the transfer. i know that solves the problem when migrating from one XP /SP combination to another, perhaps it will work for an XP to Vista migration too. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...c9-f16c-4c52-a203-8daf944dd555&displaylang=en

this link is for v2.6, but 3.0 is also available on the site.

Hi!

My last problem was solved and everything works fine now. I need the documents and emails from the old computer. I have it on my external and made a copy to my root C drive.

The problem is that I used Windows file transfer 7 and I want the files back to my Vista computer that I reinstalled. When I use Windows file transfer I get an error message that says I should choose a valid file.

What can I do?

Hello so I have this situation regarding my windows 8.1 machine and how it connects to my Windows Server 2012 machine.

I have my Windows server machine directly connected to the internet on one ethernet port and the other is on a 192.168.1.0 private network.

My windows 8.1 Machine is also on this private network(192.168.1.0) and whenever I attempt to take files from my Windows server machine using its Local ip address it begins a connection from the Windows Server 2012 machines WAN IP to the local even
though the established connection happened via file sharing by direct network ip address. This connection uses up all the throughput from my router causing every machine on the network to experience lag online.

I also have Windows 7 machines and this issue does not occur when taking files from the server machine as it does it through LAN.

I don't understand how the Windows 8.1 machine can even know my Server 2012 machines IP address or why its deciding to do these file transfers over the internet rather then LAN.

Here's an example since its a very difficult issue to explain.

I have a Private network (192.168.1.0) this network reaches the internet from WAN 1.1.1.2.

In this network I have machines Windows 8.1 (192.168.1.8) and Windows server 2012 (192.168.1.12)

I have a Windows Server 2012 Machine which reaches the internet directly from WAN 1.1.1.3. This machine has another nic located on the private network as stated abov... Read more

Hi there,

due to some complete mishap, I was forced to reinstall Windows XP. Before doing so, I did a system backup, so I could restore all files. The problem is the registry. Due to the new install, many applications will not report as installed and request that I install them anew. But I got a copy of the old registry file (system32\config\software) in the backup. Is there any program that would allow me to edit this file and export those keys I need to a .reg file?

Regards

A:Progam to transfer selected keys from old registry file to .reg file?

You are asking for more trouble... You should have created an image of the entire hard drive, and restored that image to a "clean" formatted drive. You could spend hours and days editing the registry, but even this wouldn't guarantee success

I have employed this "tweak" to increase USB max transfer size which worked well without a hitch for a loooong time, dunno if this has anything to do with BSOD but thought I'd mention it, also recently did reinstall OS (8/13 or 8/14?)

Can you transfer contents of C: drive to another hard drive easily? My C: drive is out of room, and I have another new hard drive waiting on my shelf...is it a simple thing to have my local shop just transfer the contents to the new drive, so that when I reconnect I have my OS, everything intact?

Not interested in doing it myself; I don't have the software or the time and don't want the hassle.

A:Can you transfer contents of C: drive to another hard drive easily?

Just ask them to clone your old drive to the new drive. Think out in advance what you want to do with the old drive, maybe have them do that too. Cloning makes the new drive look just like the old one in exact detail. They just use some software to do the copying. Pretty simple, shouldn't cost much.
