I have a Toshiba A300 laptop (previously ran Vista 32 bit, now running Win 7 64 bit).
The laptop has a row of media controls above the keyboard. The controls work fine, except the "mute" button, which when pressed first caused UAC to pop a permission window. When I check "yes" to allow, the speakers mute.
But I don't want UAC to always be prompting me whenever I want to mute the speakers - but I do want UAC enabled in general.
Thoughts anyone?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I don't know of any way to exclude any particular function from UAC, but have you tried using a lower setting than what you are using?
Read other 8 answersThe light on this button has always been dark when volume was on, and orange during mute. This condition seems to have started with recent, unknown update. Don't know if it is a keyboard issue or sound driver issue. Can't find drivers for either on HP drive download site.
Read other answersHi, recently I bought a new keyboard with multimedia keys
Model : Microsoft Wireless keyboard 1000
All the keys are working fine, I also installed the latest drivers and Intellitype Pro to the correct OS i'm using.
However, when I press the mute/unmute button, the volume bar shows up, but does not actually mute. It seems like it flashed the mute symbol for half a second but it still just stay unmute. I tried using the default Microsoft sound driver and the latest Realtek sound driver but still no luck.
I also tried turning HID services on and off but still the same
BUT, I remember the mute button WORKING until a few days ago.
I don't know if it is due to the Windows Update, or something to do with my motherboard driver or something else. The roll back driver option is greyed out in Device Manager so I don't assume that is the problem..
I'm currently using:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000
YAMAHA speakers YST-M15 (really old model)
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver 6.0.1.5859
ASUS M3A78-EM Motherboard
I'm really confused because if all the multimedia keys are working then it should not be a driver problem. If the volume up/down is working then it should not be speaker problem. It is ONLY the mute button that is not working.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
nvm problem solved
since im using old speakers i installed AC'97 drivers and it works now

So basically prior to Tuesday, May 31 I never had the icons pop on and off on the screen and now it's been challenging using Dragon is a pop on/off and turn the Dragon microphone on and off. Any one has the same issue and can suggest solution? Thanks,
Hello @bluesky141, Please try to load defaults after going to BIOS, Tap F10 at the boot. Go to BIOS Page. Under MAIN Tab, click Restore defaults > Save changes and exit. See if that helps. If not reinstall drivers from the below link, restart after installing and check if that works.http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5271102&swItemId=ob_130088_1&swEnvOid=406... Read other 4 answersHi,
My Dell Studio has just crashed and wont restart. The mute and volume up buttons are flashing and the volume down button is solidly lit. I could not find the diagnostic code when searching the internet. I could find pretty much every other diagnostic code apart from this one.
Any advice would be most welcome.
Thanks,
Andy
Hi Andy,
Welcome to Dell community!
As you have correctly pointed out, the diagnostic code that you have mentioned is not among the codes available to isolate the failure for a Studio 1535 laptop. The closest code is: blinking Mute LED and Volume up LED, and an off Volume down LED which is for USB controller initialization failure. Disconnect any external devices connected and try powering on the computer.
Reseating the memory modules too can help us. Please refer the following link for the Studio 1535 service manual for instructions: http://bit.ly/10PrLgH
If issue persists, the laptop’s motherboard has to be replaced. Refer the following link to check the computer’s warranty status: http://dell.to/10pMa86
If the computer has active warranty, please send me the service tag and registered owner’s name on the computer in a Private Message. To send me a Private Message, click my User name, and then click Start Conversation.

Hello i've never really had any trouble with the f1-f12 keys before because i never reall used them but when i want to use it it only lets me mute my volume. I was wondering how I could change that in order to make both work.
My laptop mute button stays orange/red and I can't get it to turn off, and when I try to turn up the sound from the control panel it slides back to mute. I've restarted the laptop, tried instaling everything from the assitant, and nothing has worked. Please help? Preferably in simple, easy steps.
1. Insitall Quick Launch software.2. Uninstall and Install quick launch and audio software (Not Driver)3. Check if any other devices connected to the computer is reducing/changing the volume. This looks like software issue and not hardware so the drivers and application are causing the issue.

It is HP Quick Launch Button. When I install this driver my problem, that is mute button doesn't work, still doesn't work. After hours that I was looking for answer I never found one. The funny thing about this problem that when I go to folder where HP QLB installed and click on Setup. When Installing finished mute button works, BUT when I turn of my laptop to next time to use my laptop mute button doesn't work. I hope you will help me and you know the answer for my problem.
Make sure you have not disabled that program in MSCONFIG this happened to me. It was because I had disabled it at startup.

Read other answersI generally keep the mute button on my laptop on because I generally don't need sound. However, for a while now starting like a couple months ago, the mute button will not stay off when I turn it off. When I turn it off I'll get sound for maybe a minute or 2 and then the mute button will turn on all by itself. When I turn the mute button back off the volume is also at 0, not the level I had it at before it turned off which is what used to happen. This is extremely frustrating is there a fix?? I've tried the find and fix problems application but it comes up with nothing. My computer is also up to date.

I'm running Windows XP professional version 02. I can't uncheck the mute button on the volume control. I tried going to the control panel and unchecking it there, but it still won't budge! I can get it to be unchecked by clicking it repeatedly, but it always manages to recheck itself. I have avg free edition and it didn't find anything. When I go to the sounds and audio device properties, I can't uncheck it there either, and next to the unmute button, the speaker picture with the no symbol on it is flickering. It's freaking out. What should I do?

Hi, It's puzzling why the installer for the Audio driver failed, but try the following to see if it's any more successful. From windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound , Video and Game Controllers. Right click on the IDT audio device and select Properties. Click the Driver tab and then click Update Driver. Select to check from the internet and see if another driver is found and installed. If it is, restart and then check the function of the Mute button. Regards, DP-K

I was wondering if there was a possibility to mute my mic using a shortcut key. I know how to mute it manually by going into raeltek settings and inside of control panel.

When you have the Realtek settings up, you could bring up task manager, find the applications, and right click to go to process. I'm guessing it would be the process RTHDCPL.EXE. It may be different as I'm not entirely famliar with 7 yet, especially 64 bit, so hopefully somebody can add to this, with more experience.
That being said, you could create a desktop shortcut to this to save SOME time, but I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for. If nothing else, I hope this gets the ball rolling, I'd like to see a better way as well.

So I have a HP DV6-2162NR laptop and the mute button (touch) is stuck in the mute position (see picture).
The button works completely fine, as in it will mute and unmute on command but the button does not change color from orange to white.
I couldn't do a system restore because there wasn't one saved. I tried disabling the sound card but that didn't work.
I'll restart it and it turns white. But as soon as Windows 7 loads, it turns orange and stays orange.
Any ideas? I'm trying to do this without resorting to a format. Thanks..
