Solved: Black screen & Blinking dash on Startup

Q: Solved: Black screen & Blinking dash on Startup

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with an upgrade to windows 7 from vista. Yesterday my computer was really slow so I reset it to try and speed it up. I got passed the Vaio screen but then came the black screen with the blinking dash on the top right corner. The only thing I can enter is BIOS with F2 nothing else works. I can't enter safe mode or anything else. I've tried a few things, but nothing works.

1. Reseting default values in BIOS
2. Removing everything but internal Hard Drive in boot menu.

I have a windows & start up disc

3. Ran Startup Repair: Says couldn't detect a problem if recently attached device then remove it. ( Nothings Connected)
4. System restore ( was successfull but still no go)
5. Ran chkdsk & chkdsk/r from command prompt option

I also contacted Sony Support and with the 15 minutes alotted

6. Reseated memory

I just want to be able to get into the computer one more time so I can transfer my music and some other important files to my External Hard Drive. Please HELP!!! Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi! Sorry for opening a new thread but this is just so serious and I am so stressed out about it that I didn't have the patience to search if the thread is already open.
I have a black screen and white blinking dash problem. The thing is, I can't even type f2 or f4, or anything whatsoever. It is not reacting at all to the keyboard. It's the second time this is happening in 2 days, every time I turn it off (properly) and try to turn it on, it does that. After a lot of hopeless trying to turn it on or make f2 or f4 work, it just starts working again normally... And now I finally turned it on after I spent the whole morning trying and I'm working on saving all my files, but now I'm scared to turn it off. What do I do?? What is wrong with my computer?

My computer, which was running windows 10 without much issue, is now completely unusable for reasons beyond my comprehension. After bios messages I now only have a blinking white dash on a black screen.

I have tried various repairs, with the windows recovery usb. All automatic repairs fail due to the disk "being locked", so i have tried a few guides which involved bcdboot commands which have failed to fix anything. One command was bcdboot g: which gave an error like failed copying boot files (i forget the exact wording) .

Could some kind soul point me towards a fix, im tearing my hair out! Many thanks!

First, i restarted my stupid computer
Then, i got that grub error.
I happily fixed that.
However, when I restarted it again,
I got stuck at black screen with stupid blinkking white dash.
So I use the Recovery Disc thingy
And i clicked that first option.
Then it says, something like
unable to fix it.
Then it says that the stupid missing boot thingy is missing.
Googled for solution.
Tried those command prompt like
Fixmbr or scanos
(it says theres an installation
I typed Y for yes and still,
That boot missing chkdsk thingy still pops up)
Remove hardwares (wait whats a hardware is it those usb thingy?)
Checked the BIOS which I googled again for its meaning.(and yes, it is in order)
But never worked.
So any suggestions or explain with more detail?
Because I have no idea about these computer stuffs.
Help me !

I already tried everything I found on the internet but no success. Thanks in advance if somebody can help me.

Hi everybody,
First of all, sorry about my English.
Few days ago, I was working on my laptop (ASUS X5DI) and when I decide shuting down, I realize that needs to intall updates. I let him to shut down by itself and do it fine without any problems.
Next day, when I turn on the computer again, the show me this (its spanish but i think you'll know what screen is):

I thought then, that something in the update process went wrong, so I try to fix it. First, I tried it by click on the "Repair Startup" option in that image menu. A message box that wants to select a keyboard language appeared but after that and some comprobations of the process, It said to me with an alert box that it couldn't be possible:

Then..  this other screen appeared:

I click on the options, even in the prompt option, and tried to fix it with bootrec commands like /fixboot or /fixmbr but nothing fix the problem.
So... What I decided? the solution that "never fail" ... format all my pc again and get a "new" computer hahaha..
I get into the BIOS and change the boot order to start from CD/DVD. Save changes, introduce the Windows 7 disc and restart.
I realized that my computer cant start from cd/dvd because that white blinking cursor appears on the top left of the screen.
I tried with different CD/DVD even Ubuntu CD and always the blink cursor appears. So... if I use HDD boot in BIOS appears the screen on the top... Read more

Hello Nicole and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've already done a reinstall of Windows 7 and the problem has returned, I think I'd start looking at hardware issues. Perhaps a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, etc that's failing. One of the Forum experts has prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides that might help isolate the problem. I might start with the Memtest86 and HD Diagnostics test outlined in Steps 8 and 9, first tutorial.

I have a dell inspiron 580 Intel (R) core (TM) i5 CPU 650 3.20 GHz with windows 7 according to the sticker on my computer motherboard I believe it is called?  I have no clue when it comes to computers so would benefit from lay person language please:)  Anyways, I have been using my computer to study for my national exam and have been accessing the study materials from google documents.  Google documents kept freezing on me, giving me an error message and closing out no matter what browser I was using.  I went to task manager hoping to free up some space thinking that it would help google documents work better.  I got frustrated with the computer so just flipped the power switch off without shutting the computer down as I should have.  The next day, I went to turn it back on and got a black screen with an underscore on it...I cannot type anything on the screen and I cannot find any options to start up in safe mode.  When I restart the computer, I only have the options of F2 or F12.  I tried messing around with options in both of these screens however, got no resolution.  I tried load default settings, and that didn't do anything.  I tried continuously pressing F5, F8, or F12 on startup hoping that would get me to safe mode and nothing....Please help, I desperately need to study and cannot figure this out.

Hi Mbtd85
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all connectors including keyboard, mouse, power cable and hold down the power button for 15 secs. Now put back the connectors, turn on the system and keep tapping on f12.
Should the system take you to f12 menu, select diagnostics and let it run. Keep us posted how it goes.
Meanwhile if available you can try another HD on the machine.

My computer picked up a nasty virus. (Actually, my 16 year old daughter did, but that's another story...rrr) So, the first thing I did was try to restore it to an earlier date. When the restore program restarted, all I got was a black screen with a blinking cursor.

What I've done since then:
1) Reformatted hard drive and reloaded windows 7 from OEM Disk. No change in behaviour. The restore program works fine, but when it restarts, I get the same screen. I've done it twice.
2) Started up in DOS using USB stick, ran CHKDSK as well as other commands, and the HD appears to be fine.
3) Disconnected everything; USB, DVD Drive, peripherals, etc, but still windows won't load.
4) I've changed the BIOS every way imaginable, but it still won't load.
5) I figured that maybe I got one of those BIOS viruses you hear about, so I reflashed the BIOS using DOS. Still, windows won't load.

I believe that all of my components in my system are fine, but there is something small that I'm missing - maybe some way that the computer is instructed to load windows that got corrupted... I'm only intermediate in my knowledge / ability to work with computers, so I'm certain somewhere out there has got something good for me to try. Thanks for any help.

Computer is an Acer Aspire X3910-U3012 which is a Pentium E5700 3 GHz with Windows 7.

So when I start my laptop, after the loading windows screen, it directly goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor/underscore in the top left corner.
I've tried the ctrl-alt-delete. That does nothing.
I've tried the shift 5 times. Nothing
I can't acess safe mode by doing F8. The only screen I can acess is when I press ESC, and that takes me to 1. System Info 2. System Diagnostics 3. Boot Device Options 4. BIOS Setup and 5. System Recovery
System Recovery takes me back to the black screen with the blinking cursor. It sucks.
I've look EVERYWHERE and nothing has worked so far! Help please!

Hi all,

I've been searching around for someone with my problem, however the things I find don't seem to be exactly the same...

Sometimes when I turn on my computer, the screen will turn on as usual, and there is like a cursor that blinks in the top left corner of the screen, again, as usual. However, it will sometimes stop, and stay on this screen for upwards of a minute or more. The laptop sounds like it's still working, as the fan is going pretty fast and everything sounds like it's spinning, however it doesn't show anything on the screen. After around the minute duration, the screen will go black and the normal boot up process is proceeded with.
From what I've read of other people, they can't even get past this screen, which is why I think my problem is slightly different, or the same, just not as severe. Does my problem also sound like it's the MBR, as indicated by other people's questions on the Internet?

If so, is there any easy way to repair it without having to use a windows 7 disc, as I have a laptop and didn't get a disc with it...

A:Black screen with blinking cursor frozen at very start of startup

If you go to Backup and Restore in Control Panel you can Create a system repair disc. You can then use it to start up and try a repair. You may have to do the same MBR several times before it works.

I have a 2.5 year old Toshiba Satellite L300-04N, which has decided to crash during exams.

Earlier today when I brought it out of sleep everything was frozen. I couldn't get into Task Manager so I turned it off using the power button.

When I turned it back on, it said that there may be disk errors it wanted to do a disk check (I don't remember the exact message). I've had this problem before, but usually it does the disk check and all is fine. This time it never started the actual disk check, so after waiting a while I hit the power button again.

Now when I try to start it, I get the Toshiba start up screen but then it gets stuck on a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner. When I press any key it makes angry bleeping noises at me.

I've tried doing a startup repair (a couple of times) with the recovery disk. The first time it did a repair, now when I do a repair it tells me it can't detect a problem. I tried to do a system restore, but it told me there are no restore points. I searched the forums for a while, but I couldn't find any other ideas.

I am more or less competent with computers, but I don't know a lot of computer jargon. Thanks in advance for your help!

EDIT: I also tried F8 at startup. Did nothing.

A:Black screen with blinking cursor at startup, repair and recovery did nothing.

I just recently rid my laptop of viruses with the help of boopme. However, I'm having some issues when starting it up. 3 things will either happen:
1)Stay stuck at the "Compaq" screen
2)Go passed the "Compaq" screen but then to a black screen with a blinking dash at the top left corner (If I wait long enough, like 3 long minutes, Windows 7 will eventually start up.)
3)Or go passed the "Compaq" screen, to the black screen with dash, but eventually instead of starting up, it will say something like "Operating system not found"

Thats apart of the operating system, is not an error so there is nothing to fix.

UNLESS thats all you ever see, but I got the impression from the post your computer still starts just fine.

If your machine is not booting and stuck at the "flashing dash" you may need to do a system repair.

Hello, I am trying to install Windows XP (because Windows 7 is damn slow) Corporate Edition 64-bit but after the Copying Windows Files setup portion, the setup wants to restart my computer, but after the motherboard logo, I just get the blacnk screen with white dash - if CD is inserted I get "Press any key to boot from CD....." and a white dash at the end with nothing happening. I've searched for a solution everywhere, but I didn't find my case. I have installed XP atleas 20 times on this computer, and I've never had such problem before. I thought it could be because of the 64-bit version, but after trying to install the 32-bit version I have got the same issue, which has never happened before. Windows 7 installs perfectly. I have: removed the CD from the drive; Updated the BIOS to the last version; Tried running in safe mode and nothing helped. My computer specs are: Processor: Intel Pentium DualCore @ 2.80 GHz, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 650GB HDD SATA2, ATI HD 4770 512MB DDR5 Graphics Card, American Megatrends Inc. 0502 BIOS. I hope there's somebody out there to help me because I really want XP.

A:Black screen with white dash after first portion of Windows Setup?

Seems that Windows XP installation is not detecting or having problems with your SATA2 drive.

Try going to BIOS and Switching the SATA2 drive out of RAID mode if possible see if that helps.

Windows Xp has issues with SATA2 Drives.

Or you may need to slipstream your copy of Xp with sp2 or 3 if your cd is only SP1 for it to recognize and work with SATA drives. Also with SATA drives I believe Windows XP only recognizes 128GB 137GB SATA drives.

This is the third time our new Dell inspiron 530 has done this... We were covered under warranty the first 2 times now they want $$$ to diagnose and repair what was fixed with a simple patch before. Apparently the directory sectors of the hard drive are inaccessible I should have paid more attention when they took control of the computer, ran their utility, and "recovered" the missing data. The entire contents of the hard drive were intact and I have no idea how the "map" of the drive could be recovered but they did it relatively quickly over the internet. Windows Vista premium and all of its boot options are completely inaccessible. Bios passes fine but as soon as the hard drive needs to be read it hangs. If this hadn't happened twice before and been repaired through software I might have believed there was a physical problem with the hard drive.

Hi. I was running Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on an Emachines ET-1331g-03w.
Just a few days ago i began getting bombarded with viruses. Something called "guard online". Evevntually messing with malware bytes and OTS (with online help) i got the virus to stop temporarily. A few hours after the success, middle of listening to music, a prompt box popped up explaining that something or other had gone wrong with windows. Before i could read it the computer was shutting down. Everything i had open was closing on its own. That night i hadnt tried touching it again. The next morning i attempted to turn the computer on and i got to the POST sequence.. Saw the E Machines splash screen and then.. blank.. Blsck screen blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner.

i've done my reading and ive managed to get my hands on a windows 7 install disc and im attempting to repair the OS but the windowsPE isnt even recognizing that there was ever any instance of windows 7 on this machine. i've tried running bootrec and ive tried startup repair and even system restore.. nothing is successful.

I installed 7 over and over again on an existing HDD only to end up with a black screen with cursor after the first restart.
Finally, I started the laptop again, Dell E6510, pushed F12 for boot options once again but this time selected BIOS Setup where I found a choice between Legacy and UEFI in the Boot Sequence setting.
Mine was set for Legacy instead of UEFI. Once that was changed, all was good.
I'm not sure why that made a difference other than I probably installed 7 under EFI.

What is EFI? Did I have a choice to install 7 there?

A:Black screen with blinking cursor solved

See this for a definition.
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the BIOS under boot order, you should see your DVD drive listed twice with the Windows 7 DVD loaded in the drive.
Once as UEFI (most likely the default) and once without that title. This where you chose which you want to install (MBR or UEFI) by setting the proper drive entry as the first in the boot order.

Disconnect everything (including add in cards, drives) but the processor and 1 stick of ram, is the light still amber? Try the other stick of ram if it had more than 1. Still amber? If so you have either a bad power supply, bad motherboard or processor.

The past month my laptop has been booting really slow so i decided to hibernate instead of shutting down the computer seeing as it resumes session and is much faster. Yesterday, my virus protection tagged certain programs as malicious and i moved them to vault as i usually do, but noticed that it deleted all the programs i use such as Photoshop, Spotify, Enternet explorer and some others that weren't viruses and im 100% sure they weren't infected. I jumped to fast by sending them to vault and afterwards i tried to restore them from the vault using the virus protection interface. It restored the shortcuts but messed up the .exe files.

Later that night i did a system restore to a point the previous day. The restore was successful and the computer started to restart as usual but now the laptop wont boot anymore.

It loads the Dell icon and then stays in the black screen with a blinking underscore. I can go into BIOS, I have ran multiple tests everything passes, i can boot from the start up disk (not to desktop) but to repair screen which "no problems are detected".

I have tried to undo the restore a few times. Unfortunately i don't have a complete backup disk with all of my files or else id nuke the HDD and start over. I spent all day searching the web for a solution but have hit a dead end.

Im curious to see if anyone can help me with Boot failure and if not tell me how i can create a successful back up from using command line if possible. As in b... Read more

I went to tune up my HP s7510n because it was running super slow and all hell broke loose within the first 5 minutes.

From the beginning:

Since it has a SATA drive, I took it out of the case and plugged it into my laptop using a SATA-USB adapter. I then ran a chkdsk on it to make sure the disk was in good shape. No errors were found.

Next I ran a virus scan and found a bunch of viruses so I cleared all of those. Then I put the HD back into the case and proceeded to boot up the computer and it went through POST and straight into a black screen with a blinking underscore/cursor in the upper left of the screen.

I read something about the MBR being messed up so I backed up all my files using the SATA-USB adapter and proceeded to use WindowsXP setup from the WindowsXP cd to use repair function and run fixboot which didnt work, then used fixmbr which caused the drive to become unusable.

Then from this point, I went to reinstall WindowsXP altogether from the cd and after the files finished copying it would go to a blue screen that said "Setup could not continue, possibly due to a system error. Contact your administrator."

After trying this and getting the same result 2 more times, I decided to format the HD with a "Complete Format" and install a fresh copy of windows.

So, it went through the process of formatting the hard drive which took about an hour. I came back to a blank screen with no cursor. So i tried rebooting and it went back to the bla... Read more

Try putting the 512 stick by itself in and try installing Windows again. Or you can download the ISO Image of memtest and burn it to a CD using IMGBurn and boot off the newly created CD and run the tests with one stick of 1Gb RAM at a time. Other then that it is your PSU that is failing.

So then I tried booting from an old Linux disc I found and it worked (how I am typing) but Windows still won't. Any help? I ran a diagnostics text and everything is working, and I can even access all my personal files on my old Windows install from Linux so I know that it's active.

check inside your case for connections to your harddrive. also check your bios boot settings and see if the os drive is first.

Hey guys, here I am again with another failure.
Today morning I woke up to my windows refusing to boot. It just does the white dash blinking in the top left corner (it jumps down a bit at first, then just keeps blinking endlessly). I'm aware that this can be a result of a poor shutdown or a crash or modified system files or program installation, or whatever. The thing is last night I was using the computer fine and I didn't install anything, modify anything, and it shut down correctly (as far as I know - after I clicked shut down I shut off the monitors and went somewhere else, and just when I came back it turned off so I assume it was fine).

I've tried a number of things already. First, I'm booting from an Ubuntu CD right now and my files are all fine and intact on the C:\ drive. Second, I tried running my Windows 7 CD to go into the recovery system and tried a bunch of things.

The recovery thing doesn't detect my operating system, first of all, but I've had this issue before. I remember that I got it to work somehow, but I don't remember how. I think it might have been a disc that I burned with a modification that allowed it to detect the system (I used some tutorials over at sevenforums.com, can't remember which ones now though). I'll look for the CD, I might have it somewhere.
EDIT: I found what I presume is the CD but it doesn't even want to boot. I'll try looking for whatever I found before and make another one, I guess. But if I could get it to det... Read more

A:Help - Windows won't boot, white dash blinking endlessly.

From what you have written, this should be impossible but I suggest you to press F8 right before booting into windows, and select 'Use last known good config'.
This issue sound really hopeless, but if you could manage to boot into any windows which is on another partition (if you have any), you could rebuild the MBR manually (master boot record) which stores the OS information.
Do you have another disk/partition?
If yes, the best would be to install W7 on it (takes 20mins) do the above things (I will explain it further if you have another partition) and then boot back into your original OS and would be able to delete the 'blank' windows 7 installation files from the orher partition.

Hi, I seem to have gotten a nasty virus and now when I start up my computer the correct display background will appear, but there will be no start menu or icons. Instead, there is a black box with a blinking cursor inside it called C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe
I have a Dell Inspiron e1505 and I have all school information and pictures and I really don't want to have to buy a new computer. I tried scanning my computer with Avast!, which has worked fine for me in the past, but the virus is no longer letting me run it correctly (it says there are missing components that won't allow it to run properly). I tried Spybot Search and Destroy which got rid of a ton of viruses and spyware (I did this in Safe Mode which works fine), and when I tried to start up again the black box problem came up again. Please help!

Hi, thanks for checking my question. I haven't found an answer to my particular situation:

Dell xps m1430 laptop w/vista (32).

It all started with a blue screen w/scrolling text after the fated restart. The blue screen text said "if this is the first time you've seen this message..." and then comp restarted, again showing the blue screen, then restarted into windows repair mode, after repair mode tried to fix the problem comp restarted, then the screen went black / blank right after the little windows loading animation (where the bar keeps moving from left to right and there's a small windows logo).
It all happened fast, so there may have been steps I forgot, but that's the jist of it.

Now screen always goes black / blank during startup after the windows loading animation, so I can't start windows in normal mode.
I can start in safe mode if I manually force shutdown by holding the power button, so I'm not imploding with fear... ok I am.

Possible causes:
1. This occured right after installing 11 vista updates (that restart was when I saw the blue screen)

2. Also occured the restart after running a patch called "Vista TCP/IP and UAC AutoPatch 6.0" I downloaded it from softpedia, the developer was listed as defcon, and their website listed was securevista.net, but the site is down(I found this out after the problem occured). The patch had lots of positive reviews, and lots of people on other sites also suggest using it to re... Read more

Hello and thanks for reading,

I have a 2 year old HP pavilion dv6 series laptop running windows 7. Yesterday I turned it on and it started normally but when I tried to browse on Firefox it gave me the blue screen (for the first time ever) and it shut down. Fearing I had a virus I ran it in safe mode and started a scan and began transporting my pictures via Dropbox just in case it died on me. Sure enough a weird error message (couldnt figure out what program made the message pop up) popped up saying I had a bunch of urgent viruses.. I didn't click on it at all and before I couldn't think of what to do the blue screen popped up and it shut down. When I tried to restart it the HP splash sign popped up and the screen flickered black and a blinking cursor started in the upper left corner. So this is where I stand now... Black screen with blinking cursor. Set default setting in BIOS (didn't work) and F8 (safe mode) or F11 (system restore) does nothing... The black screen just stays there. Any ideas? Is it a gonner? I'm hoping to get back on and get my pictures if possible. Help please!

my PSU went out and i had it replaced and since i replaced it i havent been able to boot my pc. i plug everything in and hit the power button it immediately goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left corner about 1/4 of the way from the left side. all my fans work, the hard drive is running.

Vista (64 bit)
AMD Phenom x4 9100e 1.6GHz
ATI Radeon x1950 Pro
4 Gb RAM
Power supply was from another pc i had that i didnt use anymore, same wattage just had the 6 pin PCIe connector i needed, the one currently in it is the stock one that came with the tower.

no clue what to do, F1, F2, ESC, DEL keys dont work to get to BIOS, the only responses i get are CTRL+ALT+DEL kind of restarts i think, my monitor goes to standby when i do it for a brief period of time but then fans kick on again and same black screen.

also when i hit the pause/break key it stops the beeping that is coming from the mobo. *note* if i hit the key during the beep then its continuous noise.

anyone have any advice?? any would be appreciated!!

*Edit - just to clarify, i get zero load up of anything, there is no loading screen prior to the black with blinking cursor, as soon as power is on it immediately goes to this screen.

*Edit - again i forgot to put that the 6 pin PCIe connector needed for the x1950 pro is non existant in the new PSU and i havent gotten an adaptor yet for it. dont know if that would be the reason i cant boot BIOS or windows. the original gr... Read more

A:Black screen blinking cursor immediately on boot, no load screen...

sounds like you need the PCIe power connector to run your video card. Try removing the card and enabling the onboard video until you get a new PSU or adadpter.

Hi, I recently installed DesktopX a Stardock application, which I didn't find to my liking so I uninstalled it... ever since, each time I start up my pc the following happens:
normal boot up
sign in to my account
my normal desktop background is gone
its now a black background
my documents window appears
NOTHING else happens... no taskbar... pressing windows logo key doesn't bring up menu... no nothing

What I have to do to fix this, is to:
bring up the task manager (thru ctrl+alt+delete)
choose to run a new task ''explorer.exe''

just THEN do I get a normal boot of my desktop, applications, taskbar, etc...

I used spybot to check which applications ran when i started my system, none that I didn't have before... I also ran a scan on spybot, nothing...
Scanned with AVG8 Anti-Virus... nothing but cookie files.

I also made a Hijackthis scan and heres the log, one never knows:

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on my laptop.

Today I tried to power on my laptop and the normal BIOS appeared and then went to boot the OS. After Vista finished loading, all I saw was a black screen. I can hear the hard drive spinning.

I tried to power it down and try again but I get the same problem.

PLEASE HELP! Thanks...

EDIT: I tried starting Windows using the Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced) and that didn't work. I just saw the screen flicker once and then the same old black screen.

Problem solved. Restart > F8 > Repair Windows > System Restore.

I own a Dell M90 Duo Core laptop with XP Pro installed. Recently I have encountered a strange problem. On occasion the screen is black at startup. Shutting it down and trying a second time did nothing. For no particular reason I removed the battery and rebooted with the AC adapter only. The laptop started normally. I'm stumped on this one. FYI this battery is not one of the Dell recalled batteries. Any information you can provide will be appreciated. Thanks.

I would appreciate any advice on the steps to fix the black screen of death occurring at start up. It is just a blank black screen, no cursor or anything. I cannot boot into safe mode. Placing the hard drive in a different computer does not fix the problem. I also tried making an XP boot disk. This allowed me to boot and attempt a system restore. However, the screen went black after a couple of minutes and before the restore could finish. I removed the hard drive and attached it to a different computer and am scanning it now with Malwarebytes. I don't have an XP installation disk but I do have an XP Upgade disk. Thanks in advance for your help.
