Windows 7, Constant Freezing and sudden black screen

Q: Windows 7, Constant Freezing and sudden black screen

This has been an issue that's eluded me for sometime. I'm not sure what caused it to start, but this is something that bothers me. It would be up to 1-2 hours before my computer will start freezing. Once this happens, it seems me processor skyrockets up to 70-80% and then freezing every 1-2 minutes before black screening.

This error was found in Application of Event Viewer:

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

I'm not sure if this error is directly related to my issue, but I was posting as much information for you guys to work with.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey everyone, For ages, I've been having these issues of my laptop constantly freezing, crashing, programs not responding, etc. Well, I've finally decided to do something about it. SPECS:Device: HP Pavilion m6Windows 7 x64AMD A10-4600M Processor APU with Radeon 2.29GHzRAM: 6GBAvailable space on the C: drive: 330GB The current problem: Windows will not start in normal mode. Upon entering the login screen, it will crash and enter a BDOS screen reading, "A device driver attempting to corrupt the system has been caught." I have been having problems with perpetual freezing for months now, but it has never gotten this bad before.NOTE: Windows will run smoothly in safe mode, which is why I have narrowed the most probable cause to be a driver issue Steps I have already taken: -Ran CCleaner with no issues-Defragged the disk with no issues-Scanned for viruses with multiple antivirus programs (Vipre security, Malware bytes, and RogueKiller)-Have gone into MSconfig and have disabled all startup programs and all startup services EXCEPT FOR MICROSOFT services-I have attempted to do a system scan several times, but it would always get stuck at 64% of verification scan, even in safe mode-I have checked the Event Viewer. The errors that appear at the time of the two most recent crashes are:1. The DHCP Client service depends on the Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock service which failed to start because of the following error: A device attached to the system is... Read more

Hi there. Recently my computer has been crashing an awful lot. I am just doing a task and, usually if it does, it will cut to black. The computer doesn't make any noise and I have to restart it. Sometimes it will freeze on the screen, once it actually cut to a completely white screen.

I always thought this was because I was using Google Chrome, it always seemed to be whilst that was loaded. However now its happening without that. Also, Firefox has become completely disabled, I click on the icon and nothing happens.

So, I have no idea why this is happening! It's very worrying as I am starting a new year at college next week. I have run several anti-virus checks, SpyBot checks, that sort of thing.

Please help! You might just save my life :/

Before this happened, I could put my computer on sleep without any problems. Now, when I put it on sleep, I turn it on, the screen freezes. I shut it down, start it again, and then the Loading Windows freezes. Another problem is a small one I felt like adding, is that the Windows 7 screen where it is loading up your computer, doesn't show for me. This is not a problem where other users could not log on. All mine does is have a black screen, then loads to my desktop. So it works fine, just that the screen doesn't show. Please help.

Do you have the win 7 dvd to do a repair install?

Do you have a backup, by chance?

On my 2nd X1 extreme, the first was bricked. Everytime I boot into Windows, I experience a freeze and afterwards a black screen after some time (a minute or so). The laptop became unusable in windows. I have all the windows and vantage updates. I disabled all remote management stuff in the bios, disabled all secure boot settings, set some keyboard preferences (swap ctrl-fn etc.) and changed my graphics adapter to discrete only. I tried windows restore and after experiencing some blue screens, that helps a bit: still freezing, but not always. When I reapply all windows and vantage updates the laptop goes back to the same behaviour: boot into windows and after a minute or so a total freeze, followed by a black screen some 5 seconds later and still later fans spinning up to full speed. The updates include the latest graphics drivers, and I think the issue maybe has something to do with these graphic updates, but not sure. Some more observations:- The laptop never froze when Windows was applying updates. This takes longer then the usual time to have it freeze.- During updating the laptop, when I logged into windows, I sometimes got a windows notification saying the gfx driver failed to start and windows is reverting to a generic driver. I can't remember exactly, but I think the laptop never froze when using the generic one. I run the machine in dual boot and on linux the behaviour is absent. It does have sleep issues in Linux where it also freezes when coming out of slee... Read more

During the past few weeks, my computer screen freezes up for an unknown reason. I have Windows XP, and have downloaded the SP2 a long time ago. It freezes whenever it feels like really. It's never when im doing something in particular. I can walk away, and come back and cant do anything bc it froze up. So i have to manually turn off the computer on the tower (which i hate) and it never fixes the problem bc it freezes again within 3 hour (sometimes within minutes). I have also been getting warnings randomly about my Win32 closing, and I follow the warning through and it takes me to a MS website sayin they know of this problem, and it doesnt hurt anything.

I just want to know what I can do to fix this freezing problem. I have a spyware package and anti-virus package too and they dont pick anything up. I've read on other posts from people with somewhat similar problems, and they're told to Ctrl Alt Delete and use Task Manager to end programs, but I cannot do that since im completely frozen up on the screen (And my Delete button no longer works on my keyboard<--awesome i know)

Is that any solution to this problem??? Or what may be causing it?!

You may be describing a power saving feature. The monitor turns off (a setting you can change). You power cycle the running machine, causing the unexpected fault.

Just guessing.

I'm assuming windows 10 is on the system and I am also assuming you're able to boot into windows.....
I'd suggest you run Dell F12 Preboot Diagnostics tool to check hardware on computer. Please follow steps below:
1. Turn off computer and disconnect all peripherals - printer, flash drive, external drive, etc....).
2. Power on system, quickly start tapping the F12 key continuously. In boot menu, stroll down to diagnostic and then click on it. Report back any error code. Please click on link below:

since it happens on both win 7 and ubuntu it has to be something in common like the monitor cable, video card, etc. I would also check the monitor and anything else attached to the video card.

I put new memory into a friends computer. She has an HP Pavilion 511w. It came with 128 MB and can hold up to 512. I got the right memory because even the company I bought it from says it is right oemworld. I put in 2 sticks of 256. No problems putting it in and the computer recognizes it because it shows 512 now. Here is the problem.

When I started the computer back up everything was fine then an error message came up saying I needed to update the video driver I assumed because of more memory and as far as I no she had never updated it and it is at least 4 years old. I first went to the HP Site and looked under her computer the 511w and it had a driver update there for a Intel Extreme Graphics Driver update 02/2005 version 6.14.10.3943 6.36MB, the one in her computer matched that except for the extreme part so I downloaded it and thought that was it. It worked ok for a while then started freezing up and the monitor would go to a black screen. I got looking and hers was an 810E (I think I remember that?s what it was) anyway I went to the Intel site and found the driver that should have been put in it was for the 810E chip set. I have an extra computer here at home that is also the 511w so I downloaded that driver into mine and everything works fine. Anyway I went to her place and was going to roll back the extreme driver I had put in and then put the one in from Intel. I went into device driver and open the adapter and double clicked on it and went to the driver and clicked ... Read more

OS: Windows 7 32 bit.(The problem may start here, i dont know. I installed a 32bit version on 64bit CPU. Does it pose any problems.?)
Ok let me come to the problem.
Symptoms:
Started few months back.
I started hearing some noices from my CPU. But didnt carefully notice whether its coming from Hard disk or any other parts. But it posed no problems as such to me. I continued using my PC. Then one fine day my PC screen got freezed all on a sudden. Nothing movin. Like an Graphics card adapter error. And as everyone does, I pressed the restart button. PC got restarted and started to function normally.
Then after few days, the problem appeared again but restarting didnt help me. PC didnt boot at all..No motherboard screen appers when i tried to boot the system.Nothing. No beep sound from CPU too. Then i unscrewed the CPU machine. Looked around.. Did my own 'servicing'. ie.removed RAM and fixed it back again etc etc was done. Then when i rebooted the machine started to work normally.
Then few weeks later BSOD arrived suddenly on a fine morning. I quit the machine and did nothing. After few weks today i again did my 'servicing work'. ie. unscrewwed the CPU panel, removed the RAM and fixed it back again. And now my PC is working. But i want to get the problem be diagnosed before the next BSOD comes.
Thanks in advance
sachin

I'm thinking maybe the noise is from your graphics card.

Right now I would suggest checking your card to make sure the fan is working properly and it's not clogged with dust.

Afterwards I would scrub your current video driver install and start fresh with a newly downloaded copy of the latest.

Additional info I can give you is the fault was in the directx system on the software side, but all the faults point to the ati driver kernel.

ps there was only one minidump in the attached files so I only have that to really work on, if there are more files in your c:\windows\minidump directory zipping and uploading them could help a bit.

As you can see, there are a lot of causes for this particular stop code 7F.

In looking through your drivers, I see that you have AVG anti virus installed. AVG is known to cause BSOD, on some systems. I suggest that you uninstall it while trouble shooting using the uninstall tool > Info > Tool (32bit) - Tool (64 bit). If you have AVG Identity Protection installed, uninstall it also >Info > Tool. I recommend that you install MSE and make sure Windows Firewall is turned on.

Hello,

Let me start off by describing my problem:
This happened several times, all of which happened while gaming. When it did happen, I observed the following:

monitor goes black (no input signal)
fan suddenly goes crazy
can still hear audio but it is broken (ie choppy unrecognizable sounds)
lights on keyboard turn on and off repeatedly
I was too scared to let it continue so I would always hold the power button to shut off computer
After my computer is shut off, I can turn it back on and it runs no problem. I can do everyday stuff like web browsing, watching videos. But now I'm too afraid of opening a game.

This happened on the following games: Skyrim, Team Fortress 2, Hawken, Saints Row the Third, and Faster than Light.

The time it takes for my problem to occur after opening a game varies: twice it happened within 5 minutes, twice it happened under an hour, and once over 1 hour.
Computer Specs:
Mobo: ASUS P8Z77-V LX
CPU: Intel i5-3470 3.2 GHz
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB
RAM: Kingston HyperX XMP 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 (2x4GB)
PSU: Ultra 600W Limited Edition PSU BLK
DVD: Samsung 24X DVDRW SATA OEM
HD: Samsung 128GB SATA III SSD (OS on this), and a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue
OS: Windows 8.0
What is wrong with my computer? My friend said it could be a loose cable, so I'm wondering if this behaviour is normal for a loose cable and which cable would it be at? If it isn't a loose cable, then what other problems are causing this?

Thanks.

Hi, this is my first post here.

Thanks in advance to anyone checking this thread out or offering help. I really appreciate it.

Recently, specifically since 3 days ago I have been experiencing sudden monitor blackouts when playing a video game. Shortly after the black screen, the computer restarts itself. This occurs without warning of any sort.
The game is nothing the computer can't handle, and I even had all the settings down to lowest for extra measure.

So the blackout-restart thing occured a few more times before I decided to do a system recovery.
I used Dell Backup and Recovery Manager to restore it to the way it was 3 years ago (by accident).
That was when it was first unboxed and installed with W7. That means I currently have 90% free space.

Even then the black screen restart thing still happened. The problem still wasn't fixed. The only bright side is that my computer runs faster now.

So far it only occured when I was playing that game, but I feel that will change soon. So I came here for help.

Here is the error message followed by details to the problem:

A:Black screen Error, sudden restart

Welcome,
If the shutdowns only happen when you are playing that game I suspect that there might be a heat problem. The system shuts itself off without warning or error message in those cases.
Make sure that your OS, programs, drivers and security program are up to date. See if any other activity, other than playing a game, will shut the system down.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1545 running on Windows Vista; it's about three and a half years old. Lately it had been freezing up a bit, but not very often; then I got a blue screen the other day, and ever since it has been constantly freezing up, usually about 5-10 minutes after I pass the welcome screen. I backed up as much information as I could onto my external (it refused to back up my music folders), a process that took hours because it kept freezing. Yesterday it was fine and I used it for hours without it freezing (although there were other problems, like the Dell Dock disappearing). Today, however, it's back to freezing. Also, about every other time I restart, it runs through a disk check.

I don't think it's a heating issue; I have a strong cooling pad and the keyboard isn't hot to the touch. I also have McAfee installed and did long before these issues started, so I don't think it's a virus. I'm not sure what I should do to fix it, or if a fix is even possible.

All help is greatly appreciated!

Hi, Welcome to TSF

So from your description it almost sounds like a hard drive issue and the only way to be sure is to run test on the hard drive. To do this you need the software and a program to make the bootable disk, you can get the diag software by clicking this link --> SeaTools for DOS | Seagate

This will be in an iso disk image and you can use burning software to make the bootable disk, if you don't have a program to make the disk you can use this free software The Official ImgBurn Website
imgburn is free and won't cause harm to your pc, this should be done on a working pc. Have you made restore disk for the pc? This would be helpfull if you have to buy a new hard drive and if not then you will need to order disk from the pc manufactorer. If you need to order the recovery media this link will hel Tech Support Forum - Announcements in Forum : Microsoft Support
scroll down to the part about ordering the media and there is a link provided that will help you find info on doing that.

Bought this laptop for Christmas. I have been having this problem since its purchase. The screen randomly turns black and becomes unresponsive. The power button remains on and so does the display's backlighting. The only way to solve this issue is to restart the laptop which is very frustrating when I have unsaved work. This happens multiple times a day. I need this laptop for a project I'm working on, I can't afford to go a week without it, so I can't return it. I've also already upgraded the RAM. When it works this laptop is great though.

I have a multi-boot set up with XP 64 as one of the OS's. I have been using it more often recently and it can suddenly give a black screen, keyboard doesn't work (tried to shutdown 'blind' using Ctrl+Alt+Del then Alt+S then Enter, no response). Also pressing Numlock doesn't affect the LED.
There is nothing relevant in Event Viewer.
The PC goes totally dead although the power is still on.

I have Vista 64 also and this works perfectly, so do Vista 32 and XP 32.

There is no pattern to the freezes, at least none I can see, they seem to occur at random times.

I know it's a tall order with such an intermittent fault but has anyone got any idea what I can do to troubleshoot this ?

(if it helps my system specs. are 'under' the PC icon above)

Hello!
I just received my new dell inspiron 15 7000 (7559) i5 non-touchscreen model for 1 day and it already developed an issue which manage to drive me crazy. My laptop screen decided to turn blank randomly while leaving the entire system on. This means that the keyboard light is still on and I can still adjust its brightness but the screen is just blank. The only thing that I can do when it happens is to turn off and on the laptop with power button, and the screen will come back on again. I had no idea what causing this and I already tried to reinstall both the bios and my gpu driver to those listed in dell support website. Has anyone else encounter this problem? Please help because I am so desperate and disappointed right now. P.s. I had to write this question 3 times because the laptop screen just turn blank when I click the post button below >:(

Hi!

Recently I stumped on a problem when playing various video games (Battlefield, League of Legends, Steep,...). My screen would suddenly go dark and the audio would work for a couple of seconds and then it would also go quiet. The PC seems to still work since all the fans are running and MOBO postcode is A0 which means that it doesn't think anything is wrong. I'm getting this issues only when playing games longer then 30-40 minutes. But if I try to play a couple of minutes after the crash (When I restart my PC) it would occur on a much regular basis (10-15 minutes). The issues started appearing around a month ago, but I don't remember installing or using any specific programs/games/software that could cause this problems. As a note, my PC is over 2 years old and I've experienced one blue screen 1 year ago.

My PC specs:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 10 Education, 64 bit

Since I purchased this computer, I had daily problems where the screen will randomly go dark/black and the computer becomes unresponsive (even during work)- the power button is still on/lit and the computer appears to have entered hibernation or sleep.  The computer will not respond to any other commands and only a hard powerdown/restart is possible.
The problem happens randomly and I have not been able to correlate it with any action, program, temperature issue, or other causality.  I have run full diagnostics and all of the software/drivers are updated.  The problem existed since I purchased the computer, and has remained since I added memory and a M2 SSD drive to the open bays.
I initially thought it was a hibernate/sleep or power configuration issue, so I did not initially return the computer within the initial 30 day period.  All of my efforts to turn off hibernate/sleep setting via GUI and CLI have been unsuccessful.
When it works, it works great.

For the past few days a new problem has occured: one program will go into black screen, while everything else runs as normal. Then after a while this spreads to another program, until I can't use the machine anymore and will have to restart - which fixes it(for a while). When the problem starts it seems the windows clock(lower right) stops.

Anyone heard of this before? Google if full of 'black screen after boot' but haven't seen this one.

Hello asmith350,  First of all, we need to find out it is hardware or software issue.  -Could you please open bios screen and check is problem going on?- If problem goes on in bios screen, most probably this is a hardware issue and you should contact with HP support- If not, check status of your device's hinges when the lid opening and closing.- You should also try to update your unit's bios and graphic card driver from  http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

OMG. My Toshiba Satellite M35-S320. XP Pro (SP3) just splashes the "Toshiba" logo then goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor up in the top left corner. When I try to F8 and start in safe mode or "Last good configuration" it does nothing for the first dozen or so F8's. Then it beeps once each time I press the F8 key. I next tried F12 and a window appears which offers four boot options. The top one is "CD/DVD". So, I downloaded and burned the ISO of OLTPE and tried it in the machine. I can hear and feel the spinning starting and stopping. However, there is no change to the black screen and nothing loads. It was working great and all of a sudden, it's just not. No new programs, no downloads. Ergh!

I know that there are many seeking help here and I'm highly appreciative of the assistance I've gotten in the past. Please help out this old, seriously "non-techie" granpa.

I would get a random black screen while playing an online game on my laptop (this happens randomly but usually 15-30mins after starting Windows and start playing the game). After the black screen appeared, it would automatically reboot to this windows error recovery page with options to go into safe mode (networking/command prompt) or just boot windows normally.

I chose to boot Windows normally but after getting into Windows 7 and started playing a while, a random BSOD would appear. It has happened for 2-3 days straight. The attached is the mini dump.

Note: I did not install anything new to my laptop, I have ran chkdsk and sfc /scannow and found nothing.

I have no idea what caused the black screen and the BSOD.

Here's the pic of the BSOD:

have you tried different player? i.e. vlc or media player classic.
it can also be a codec issue, have you tried other video types?

yes i have tried both PowerDVD Mk I and Mk II and both are filled with bugs, especially when dealing with certain codecs. although i have to admit the video effects are sometimes useful.

Hello there.I've been a fan of this site for quite some time and have gotten some problems resolved just by searching the forums.
However my computer has recently developed a serious problem that I haven't been able to find a fix for.
It goes a little something like this:
Issue #1-
On our shared desktop a family member will try to log into his/her account and after a few seconds of loading settings the screen will go black and only the white cursor is visible.Task manager can't be launched and no keyboard shortcuts will respond. It will remain this way until manually turned off.Sometimes it will allow someone to log on and access the internet after being booted up again but most often the screen will go black again after 5-10 minutes.
Issue #2-
If it happens to be a good day and issue #1 hasn't occurred yet someone might be able to watch a few videos or play a game for a short time then suddenly everything will go black and the tower makes the sound it does when it restarts.
But instead of restarting once again there is only a black screen this time without a moveable cursor and the fans can still be heard running.

We've had this computer for about 5 years with numerous common, and usually easy to solve, problems but this is leaving me clueless.Automatic restart has been disabled, full virus scan found nothing,no new hardware or software has been installed recently and no other intentional changes have been made.

I'm not sure what specs ... Read more

I have an older dell dimension 4600 that was given to me. It seemed to be working good until while I was using it it suddenly went off and the screen went blank. The only sign of life is an amber blinking lite on front. I took it apart and looked inside. There is only a green lite on that connects to the pwr switch. I disconnected everything but the hard drive & RAM but nothing else happened. Where do I start with this??
Thanks for any suggestions.

A:Solved: sudden black screen & blinking amber light

Disconnect everything (including add in cards, drives) but the processor and 1 stick of ram, is the light still amber? Try the other stick of ram if it had more than 1. Still amber? If so you have either a bad power supply, bad motherboard or processor.

Before I post the information here is the jyst of things. Whenever I play -certain- games, my computer display will suddenly go black and my monitor will flash with: "HDMI No Signal." The system is completely unresponsive to any keystrokes. If I repeatedly press ctrl + alt + delete or alt + tab repeatedly, a loud buzzing noise will begin sound off through my headset. Some of the games I experience this issue in are: Evil Genius, Guild Wars 2, Age of Mythology, Medieval 2: Total War. Yet games such as Crysis, Empire: Total War, Metro 2033, etc. I can run on max settings and never experience this issue. I do not experience blue screens, but windows occasionally thinks it does. This is what I received moments ago:

Hello, We have two Aspire Z3-600 systems and the same problem is happening on both. After the latest Windows 10 update, I believe it's called the "Anniversary Update", the screen is blacking out for about a second, at random, and about 5 to 10 times a minute!  It's impossible to use the PCs for any amount of time. It's a definite software issue because the black-outs happen much more often when specific software is running. For example, when I opened the window for the Acer ID information to get the serial no, etc, that window caused much longer black screens and I didn't even have time to click the Print button before the next screen blackout. We checked Windows Update twice, we uninstalled and reinstalled the video drivers (the most probable culprit) we run the Windows Devices troubleshooter which found some driver update and installed it, but nothing solved the problem.  We get on the desktop OK, start using MS Office, or other software and the black-outs start again. Any suggestions will be very appreciated. We need the PCs to do actual work, and the sooner we can solve this problem the better. Thank you.
