Internet site anomaly on 4 of 5 systems

Q: Internet site anomaly on 4 of 5 systems

I have an anomaly that I first thought was site-related, then began to believe that it was browser-related, and now discover that I've no idea to what it's related!

I have five systems running Windows 7-64, four of which are running Enterprise Edition, and the fifth, Ultimate. All are completely current with Microsoft Updates, and all have the same software set.

This anomaly is apparent using Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Firefox (V 31.0) browsers, so it's not (necessarily) the fault of browser ad-ins.

I like to read obsolete books. I often look at Pirate Bay and/or Demonoid to see what may be available. (demonoid.ph)

On the Demonoid site, I'm unable to use their "search" function on four of my five systems. (The fifth system, running Enterprise, works just fine!) If I start by using keywords in the "Torrent Search" box on the Demonoid "Home" page, the screen basically clears and remains static. The same behavior is exhibited if I add any "word", (or words) to the "Keywords" box on the "Torrents" page "Filter" panel.

None of this is life-threatening! I've one system I can use to "search", so life is good. On the other hand, I can't abide a riddle such as this without at least TRYING to solve it. ANY help or suggestions will be gratefully appreciated. If any readers have the time to try this on their own systems, and run into the same anomaly, I'd be interested knowing.

I'd CERTAINLY be interested in a working solution!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would suspect a anti virus or anti malware program is blocking access to those sites.

From ZDnet

The Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) has taken the site down for maintenance because they "believe we may be infected with malware."
ISC is the group behind the open-source Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) program. BIND is arguably the most popular DNS software on the planet. It is certainly the most used DNS program on the Unix and Linux systems that make up most of the Internet's fundamental infrastructure.
If the BIND code itself has been corrupted, and you've updated your DNS BIND server with the code, you could be in for a world of hurt. Your site might now have a security hole on it. It's also all too possible that it could be used for a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

About a year ago, I found a link *somewhere* that led to a site which sold some decent barebones systems (no O/S) for under $200. Does anyone know of such a site? I can't remember where it was.

For what it's worth, I currently run an older Athlon 700 MHz (specs in my signature), but I've heard it's not really a good system for running XP. It's been fine for 98SE, but I'm leery of using it for XP. So, I'm thinking about a second system (the 98SE for games, personal pics, etc. and one with XP for internet, Office, and so forth).

I don't use any of the newer graphics-intensive games...just some older ones...and don't use programs like Photoshop.

The truth is, I'm not sure what to tell you about what I need, but I believe a faster CPU and more memory would be good for XP (am I right about that?).

Anyway, I'd sure appreciate any thoughts

(Please pardon my redundancy - I have posted this to the Customer Care Board and Client Service forums - just hoping to correct what I hope was an accidental change in support policy.)
This is not a technical comment but it is a comment about Dell's Technology Support. Recently the support site for laptops, and I presume other areas though I have not checked, was revised to change its structure. In the process many items were removed notably having to do with drivers for older systems. Even if a system is past warranty that does not remove the responsibility for Dell to continue to provide the most recent (even if old) drivers especially since the cost of doing so is trivial. This is especially the case when Dell is the only source for specific drivers. A specific example is a Dell Vostro 3700 laptop which uses the embedded GPU in the CPU as well as outboard nVidia GPU; the hybrid video architecture is such that NVidia provides no driver and re-directs users to Dell's site. In the case of this specific model, most of the drivers that were present a month ago are now gone.
Dell laptops have two things going for them - good products at a good price and a great support site. This has prompted me to continue focusing upon Dell - e.g. two new 5759's in 2017, and to recommend Dell to colleagues and friends. I have had recent occasion to review some very old systems on HP's support site - all relevant drivers continue to be available. I strongly recommend that Dell c... Read more

I have tried most of the posts on the internet to fix this problem--this is under IE6--"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." The problem just suddenly appeared. I'm running a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop with Win XP Home, Service Pack 3 installed, 1 gb ram and a 40 gb HDD. Had McAffee Internet Security Suite preinstalled but removed it via REVO Uninstaller and have only Windows firewall enabled and NO anti-virus. I did try downloading with Windows firewall disbaled and still no success. I can navigate to a site like Google Chrome download page but then when I click on the download button, the error message appears. Also can't download Microsoft or Windows updates from either site, although, again, I can get through the "checking" phase. I've run Malwarebytes, A-Squared, and IObit 360 and removed about 13 traces of malware ranging from low risk to high risk, defragged and cleaned the reg, all to no avail. I originally had IE7 installed, read about rolling back to IE6 and doing the typical repair sequences, again to no avail. Supposedly IE8 fixes this, but I can't download it, although I did try the stand-alone installer of 15 MB without checking the "get updates" box. It loaded and installed and shows up as IE8 but still had the same problems. Then did a system restore back to before the IE8 install, rolled back to IE6 again... Read more

Hi everyone:

With my limited (VERY limited!) networking experience, I'm at a loss for a problem I'm having at the school where I teach. Two of our systems (which run W95) cannot access the Internet. They are both appearing on the network and were working fine a few days ago. Both systems now return the "Page cannot be displayed" when using IE to try to access the Internet.

What would be the first thing to try? Cables? NICs? As far as I can tell, the settings are correct in IE - both WERE working last week.

Thanks for any networking advice!!

Hey guys, thanks in advance for any advice!

I came home from work one night to find my computer (PC, Windows XP) in a state of disrepair. All of my antivirus programs say that they are unable to auto update, and when I tell them to turn auto updates on they crash. My internet browsers will load two or three pages before freezing completely and ceasing to work. When I open the task manager there are many processes that I don't recognize and why I try to close them it says that they are "critical" and cannot close. I have attempted a system restore several times and every time it says that the attempt failed. I have ran various virus scanners and registry scanners, and even some specialized Symantec programs and even though they all claim to have deleted the virus, the problems still persist. What can I do?

I'm sorry I cannot post any logs or anything like that. I am posting this from another computer because of the afformentioned browser problems!

Hi, recently a friend of mine accidentally clicked on a fake virus protection poppup, and I was able to stop the main part of the virus from effecting the rest of the computer, but there is still a browser hijacker hiding somewhere... and no virus protection I have tried has picked it up yet.
The bad thing about this hijacker, is that it has spread through to the other computers through the network (Mac, and Linux/Kubuntu computers) aswell.

The only noticable effect it is having, is on the internet browsers.
Basically, there are 2 things this virus is doing.
Firstly, every couple of times you click on a link, it redirects you to one of many sponsored websites, which seems to be making the virus owner, money through the google adwords ppc program.

Secondly, every now and then, it will cause a poppup WITHIN the browser window, asking you to install some kind of security program, which if you click on, it will try to download a file.
Any Idea what this could be, and how I could get rid of it from a mac, and a linux computer aswell?

Internet worm hits 188,000 systems worldwide
By Ho Ka Wei

AN INTERNET worm called 'Blaster' or 'LoveSan' has spread across the world over the past two days, infecting and crashing thousands of computers, including some in Singapore.

The worm, first noticed in the United States on Monday, specifically targets computers using Microsoft operating systems such as Windows XP and Windows 2000.

It has infected some 188,000 systems worldwide, said the Internet security company Symantec.

Its regional marketing manager Teresa Wong told The Straits Times that the Asia Pacific accounts for some 15 per cent of incidents.

A:Internet worm hits 188,000 systems worldwide

That I believe is a rather conservative estimate since many system that are infected go unreported and the only way to assume the effect would be counting the number of downloads for available fixes by Antivirus companies. Many of those fixes are put on servers or floppies and handle a larger number of machines than the original download.

Fast-spreading virus targeted MS SQL Server 2000's - infecting 22,000 in just hours

01-25-2003 04:41:00 AM CST -- By TED BRIDIS, Associated Press Writer

Traffic on the many parts of the Internet slowed dramatically for hours early Saturday, the apparent effects of a fast-spreading, virus-like infection that overwhelmed the world's digital pipelines and interfered with Web browsing and delivery of e-mail. Sites monitoring the health of the Internet reported significant slowdowns globally. Experts said the electronic attack bore remarkable similarities to the "Code Red" virus during the summer of 2001 which also ground traffic to a halt on much of the Internet. "It's not debilitating," said Howard Schmidt, President Bush's No. 2 cyber-security adviser. "Everybody seems to be getting it under control." Schmidt said the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center and private experts at the CERT Coordination Center were monitoring the attacks.

Lately, I've heard some people say that the Unix code is more secure than the Windows code and that the Windows code has many holes and bugs in it. Before, I always thought Unix systems (for example, Mac) were less likely to get infected by viruses only because they had a lower market share. However, I'm starting to wonder if the Unix code is really more secure than the Windows code. Is this true? Also, does the Windows code really have that many bugs and holes in it?

A:Are Unix systems more secure than Windows systems?

It is rather debatable, its harder to compare two completely different codes and say one is flawed and one is not.

Though Unix/Linux does appear to be a bit more secure, which is why Apple's OS X (their baby), is based on a unix-code.

OK, this just started happening recently. It's not a big deal but I'm curious as all get out to know what might be causing it.
Here's a simple scenario describing my win 8.1 x64 system...
I run 1 win explorer windows listing say D drive
Then I open another explorer window to the C drive

Now on the taskbar u can see that 2 windows are active so I hover the mouse over it and the 2 preview windows pop up.
Now let's say the C drive is on top right now and I want the D drive to come to the front so I click on that preview window but it still stays on the c drive. BUT the SECOND time I click on the D drive in the preview thumbnail it will come to the front.
Also when I try to bring an explorer window to the front when it's behind another program it won't do it. I have to click on the other program to minimize it. u can tell the explorer icon becomes the active window and the other is dimmed but explorer doesn't come to the front.
It's always when it's interaction with a win explorer window. Between 2 other programs everything works as it should.

Like I said, no big deal but how the heck did this start happening?

I was just thinking if this was a power supply problem and just wanted confirmation and support if at all possible.

Hi, first off sorry if this is the wrong area I'm using tapatalk for the first time and it's very different!

Anyway I have the above motherboard with 16GB ram (8*2gb sticks) and an i7 4820k processor, what is happening is that only 15gb is reporting as available in the bios and in Windows, yet the bios does specify that all 16gb is present and shows it all in each slot, now when I take out one 2GB stick and the ram is then 14GB only 11gb is available, so the issue does seem like some sort of feature as opposed to a fault.

Anyone have any idea what is going on?

FYI... Just found a deficiency in updating from FF v18 to v19 in Win8 if using Foxit PDF Reader as the default PDF reader with the Mozilla plug in to view online PDF document withing the browser (what a mouthfull).

The browser will not open a PDF document from an online site, but instead downloads it to the designated download folder.

After puzzling over this for a couple of days and reverting to FF v18 with no joy, I took a closer look at FF Options/Applications. What I first thought was FoxIt Reader PDF Document, was, in fact FoxIt Reader FDF Document.

The entry for PDF was missing after updating to v19. Simple to fix if ones eyesight is really good and can see right off it is FDF instead of PDF (getting OLD sucks).

Don't know how many this will apply to, but thought it worth a post.

A:FF v19 update Anomaly

Yeah, I use Foxit myself and did notice that recently.

The fix is indeed in your screenshot.
FDF stands for "Forms Data Format." FDF is a file format for representing form data and annotations that are contained in a PDF form.

Hello folks

I have seen this before when a computer I was working on was having issues with its OS, and I am probably going to have to blow away my Windows install and start fresh, but can anyone tell me exactly what can cause the type of graphic on-screen dashes that are occuring on most pages that come up on my PC?

Thanks. The image is linked to below. Not sure why I can't poast the image, perhaps it is a limitation of my amount of posts or something.

When I boot up and click on a website, I get an error message that Windows cannot the site, after which the site appears as of old. Also, sometimes when I am trying to go to something I have in MS Works I get a similar message that the system cannot find the file, after which the file appears. None of this interferes with my use of the computer but I keep wondering why it happens. It has has been going on for a few weeks now.

I have a Dell Demension 2400 with a Pentium 3 and plenty of free space and I use Windows XP Home Edition.

Any thoughts?

I'm a newbie so hope this is the correct forum....

My company recently created a Facebook page to go with our revised company web site.

All was well until just recently Facebook started adding a "similar Facebook pages" section to our Facebook page. Unfortunately the similar links they supplied were all our competing product manufacturers who, because they had Facebook accounts longer than us, had more likes, etc., and the links in the similar pages allows readers to jump straight to our competitors... rather than search for their Facebook address.

But, if we go to any of those competitors, none of them have the "similar Facebook pages" section so there are no links to our page.

So our Facebook page is, in effect, advertising our competitors but not vice versa.

What can we do to delete the "similar Facebook pages" section?

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi and Welcome,
Can't see an answer yet but lots of people with similar views to yours discussing the issue at this link - all looking to disable 'similar Facebook pages'.
One quote there that stands out as being particularly worrying:

"I work at a library, and we are incredibly frustrated with these Similar Facebook Pages, because pornographic pages appear on our youth services page. It’s just horrible, and we are faced with closing the page. If anyone hears of a way to opt out, please tell all!"
Hopefully Mr.Facebook will listen!

On 2013.03.12 (yesterday) my computer informed me of many updates available. I installed them, all save one were successful. I was unable to identify the culprit update, so I sys. restored and re-installed them one at a time. The last one was IE 10 and required a restart. When my desktop was loading an error box titled 'ie4uinit.exe' appeared with error code 0xc000007b. I closed the box and the desktop/startup continued and completed without any 'visible' or operational incident except one. When I went to start the internet by cliking my IE icon nothing happens. I opened the task manager with the process tab visible. I cliked on the IE icon again and watched the task manager. I saw the ie task appear for about a second then it disappeared. So, for now, I have uninstalled the IE10 update and all seems well again.

Is there a known bug with this update?

Or are there other issues I should be cognizant of?

(FWIW, when I view 'Installed Updates' the list shows that the IE10 update installed 'successful' - in status column)

-thank you

Hello MourningStar,

If when you open IE9 and click on Help (menu bar) and About Internet Explorer, does it show IE9 now?

If so, then you might see if using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to install IE10 using a standalone installer instead may work better for you.

Internet Explorer 10 - Install or Uninstall in Windows 7

Hope this helps,

I did a search but with 31 pages to look through I didnít have the patience to look at all of them. This is mostly just an irritation at this point. IE works fine but a little anomaly showed up last week. I had IE 5.5 and when I found this anomaly I tried upgrading to IE 6 but itís still there. For whatever the reason, I went into tools/internet options on the general page and wanted to change the length of history kept. Hadnít done this in a while but the first thing I noticed is that I can only enter two digits. Funny thing is, I distinctly remember being able to enter three. I have IE 5.5 at work too and when I looked at it, sure enough I have three digits available. Well, I checked the registry entries on my work machine, which were consistent with what shows on the general tab, and went home to look. What I had done was bump it up to 99 but when I look at the registry it actually says 999. Another little anomaly that showed up when I upgraded was the history button on the tool bar above lost itís text somehow.

Iím going to follow all the advice about repairs and reinstalls Iíve seen so far but I have to admit that my confidence in Billís products is not high so while I my plan says to do these things, I thought I would check to see if anyone has encountered these specific little frustrations and has corrected them.

I just upgraded my system and am experiencing an unusual video effect when I try to run Civilization 4 in SLI mode. The lower half of the screen exhibits a translucent red color, the amount of the screen involved shifts somewhat, sometimes less that half screen, never more than half the screen.

Components are ASUS P5N32-SLI/DELUXE motherboard, Intel Processor Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 840 3.20 Ghz, Power Supply Antec TPII-550, Memory Kingston KVR667D2N5K2 / 2Gb, Asus Video Cards EN6800GT/2DT/256M x 2

Any thoughts on what might be causing this appreciated, runs fine in non SLI mode.

Is it ONLY happening in civ4?

There are literally thousands of people who are having the same problem as you if you do a google (the split screen problems when gaming).

For many the problems seem to stop after a driver update. Have you updated everything?

Also, I have heard many people talking about vsync and it causing screen splits. Go into your card settings and try turning it off if you have it on, and on if you have it off.

Good luck!

I'm having a problem in a migration of my winxp system to new hardware.

I've cloned the system volume to the first partition on a new harddisk, (rdisk 0 partition 1) service pak 2; samsung sata harddrive

as well as a created a vanilla xp system volume on the second partition of a second hard drive. (rdisk 1 partition 2) service pak 3; maxstor sata harddrive

The cloned volume boots up ok, but some of the software doesn't work, stating that it is not installed - (not missing, but not installed correctly). The software listing in control panel add/remove software is very short and is missing entries for 90% of the software installed.

If I boot up the hard drive using the cloned system harddrive as the primary disk, but point the bootloader program to the vanilla partition on the second disk, an unusual thing happens. The initial screen shows service pak 3 correctly, but somehow the system transfers to my cloned system volume on the other harddrive, which boots correctly and for the most part operates correctly. Software that didn't work (not installed correctly) when it was booted from it's own partition entry now works correctly. The software listing in control panel add/remove list now shows the complete list of all my software. Everything is fine and good except a couple of problems: 1. updating drivers to the new hardware seems to work during the installing process, but the new drivers don't seem to ever execute after the reboot. Secondly, if I turn off ... Read more

A:Boot process anomaly.

When cloning an previous WinXP hard drive to new hardware you should expect driver problems. Your new system needs drivers for the new hardware. You should have a CD with driver files for your new system.

If your new system is an OEM, like a DELL, the driver files are on a CD but they are in compressed install files so the New Hardware Wizard cannot be used. In the case of DELL, you boot to the CD and follow instructions to load drivers which is to select from a list of what the DELL Driver Installer sees and install one-at-a-time. Suggest you install all that the DELL Driver Installer sees.

Note: You should uninstall any old drivers from your old PC if they are still listed. Especially if they are shown nonfunctional in Device Manager.

Ok i will nutshell but give details. So my laptop is 4-5 years old.Physically its wear and tear and i'm on it constantly but nothing too serious that can't be fixed by the geek squad.Well here for the past month my Fan has been making a loud screeching noise.Something is extremely wrong with the fan..Apparently if i let it resume like this it shuts my computer right back off.Rarely, but it will even boot it system repair mode for some reason , the screen will flicker , then it will shut off. The fan apparently can be dangerous (to my system) and scary.Well i decided to pry my computer open from the side a little and slip
a thick piece of paper in between where the fan is and not only did the noise stop but it started functioning perfectly.I was amazed and this was a good thing but like a month later it started to shut off.It would shut off and not come back on for 4-6 days at a time. I've automatically ruled out that it overheats since when this happens i am surfing the web or playing on my bluestacks. I don't game heavily anymore (For several reasons). It will shut off for 4-6 days and not power back on and i can't figure out the cause but i have some theories/assumed culprits

1.The Fan - I desperately need a fan change and the fan could be destabilizing which is causing great malfunction and grief to my computer. This is understandable since the computer IS nearing 5 years of age. It's still a machine and must be treated as such.
2.The battery - My battery is quite drained.... Read more
