Explorer crashes/freezes after I right click on a file

Q: Explorer crashes/freezes after I right click on a file

Hi, a day or two ago I've had a problem where if I right click on a file or folder (any type) the wheel will turn up but won't load. Usually it will cause the explorer to crash. I am still able to view the video or music file at this time but right clicking will not work. At first i thought this was caused by iTunes as that won't open up either. However, upon restarting it will work just fine. I am able to right click and also open iTunes. I have figured out this may be caused after I wake my computer up from sleeping or hibernating. I have tested this out multiple times and it happens all the time. When i try to log out or shut down (or simply restart also) the wheel keeps spinning while saying Shutting down. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but I just wanted to include it as this is started to happen at the same time. I'm not really certain whats causing this after waking my computer up. I hope I explained this clearly but if I haven't please let me know. I'm on a 64 bit, Windows 7 computer.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

i have not found any solution for this even though there seem to be several similar postings before, so here goes. All this happens on Win2k before and after installing SP4.

Whenever i open an explorer and right click on a file, it will terminate all open explorers as well as take down my launch bar (which will subsequently be rebuilt though). What i want to do is to delete a file, and it does not work with pressing delete either (same effect). But, as i said, the whole conext menu wont open. I am not really aware of newly installed programs, could be wrong on that one though. Couldnt find where to manipulate registry. Any input on this one very welcome.

Btw, i can right click on folders. Just not on files. wierd, isnt it? 8^)

This is the first issue i have had with windows 10 ever since installing it in august. Ever since yesterday whenever i click on a file in the file explorer window it will gray out and stop working. Unlike the average hang this one will stay grayed out for about 5 to 10 seconds, my screen will go black for about half a second and than everything will be back to normal. I am thinking that this could be a virus but i have run a scan 2 times and nothing showed up. Other than the file explorer not working everything is fine. This is really weird since it only started yesterday and i have never had any issues like this in the 4 years that i have had my computer.

As it says, if I open a folder and r/click any file (to send it to another disk), I get a message saying that Explorer has stopped working and then it is restarting. This happens every time I try this. It restarts OK every time but never tells me why it crashed.
When I go to do a System restore, it cannot complete the restore as it says a file cannot be accessed and that maybe an Anti-virus is running. I have disabled A/V and Firewall, both in Norton Internet Security which I only installed yesterday. All was working OK until later today, when I noticed that Windows 7 had installed 3 critical updates and I'm thinking that one or both are the cause?
These were KB973924 x 2 and KB972696.
Hope someone can help with this please!

Hello everyone!

I'm loving the new Windows 10! But this problem is really bugging me.

Whenever I right-click a file anywhere on the Desktop, the File Explorer crashes briefly and then comes right back up. This does not happen anywhere else, only on the Desktop.

I tried going to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/*/shellex/ContextMenuHandlers" with RegEdit and removing some of them, but to no avail.

Anything to point me in the right direction or any suggestions?
Thank you in advance!

When I right click on a file in Windows Explorer (Vista Ultimate) the hour glass appears and after a while the Explorer window turns grayish. If I minimize it I can continue to work, even activate another Windows Explorer window. But if I attempt to close the grayed window the screen turns blue (Not the "window of death", and there are no error messages) and my desk top is lost. I can three finger salute, raising the task manager which tells me nothing is running, and I have to restart or shut down!

A:Right click on file windows explorer freezes

Hello Pete Diebenow

I think this might be caused by a bad context menu handler. A context menu handler is a shell extension handler that adds commands to an existing context menu (Example: cut, copy, paste, print, Scan with Norton etc).

Download ShellExView and run it.

It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using "Type", so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.

General rule here is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

You can disable them ...they say "one at a time" and see what effect it has on the problem. You can do it a lot quicker by bisecting the list, disabling half of the entries in one fell swoop, rebooting and trying the right click. You just have to narrow it down. Then keep bisecting the list until it is just a few and do these one at a time. The problem is that you have to reboot between tries to get accurate testing of the results of your disabling.

The latest version of ShellExView marks all the non-Microsoft extensions in Pink for easy identification. All other types of shell e... Read more

This is so weird, see the screenshot. This happened after booting up my pc today (running XP Pro SP3).I had a malware infection days ago and removed it almost completely (apart from random tabs popping up in Firefox).Last night I ran O&O Defrag and it finished without any problems or errors.I shut down the pc and then this morning I hung at startup.Safe mode hung at mup.sys and after some Googling I managed to 'fix' it by copying over the original registry (as detailed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...;en-us;Q307545).Obviously that got me back to how Windows was just after the original install in 2007.So I restored the backup of the registry I made just days ago. This fixed everything but gave me this really weird thing in Explorer.Even though the names are wrong I can still click the C: drive and see all my files and folders.I can enter any folder but the moment I double click a file it will open the file in the associated program and crash explorer at the same time.I hope someone has a solution for this! Now

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. You have a very severely infected system -- likely because of the lack of antivirus & firewall software. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee it will be 100% secure afterwards. Step one would be to read the five steps link in my signature below and post a hijackthis log on the appropriate board.
Once they certify you are clean ; the next step would be to boot to safe mode by tapping F8 once a second on bootup until you get an options menu and choose safe mode.
Login with user name Administrator (not your usuall name) and leave password blank if you have not protected it.
THen go to control panel / users and create a new account (different name and password ) with administrator group membership.
Restart your computer and login to the new account and let us know if it has the same problems.

Also , on the firewall not working go to start / run and type services.msc and hit enter
Locate windows firewall and make sure it is set to automatic startup and started.
If it will not start there; make sure RPC and WMI services are set to automatic.

I know exactly how frustrating your problem is.

On one of my computers running WinXP Pro with SP2 I had the same problem when right-clicking on any file or folder in Windows Explorer. I setup a new AMD Athlon 64 3400+ today and after installing numerous apps I ran into it again.

Since it only happens when I right-click I thought it must be related to the context menus. A quick Google search found an excellent freeware app named ShellExView 1.10.

Available here: http://www.soft32.com/index-2-2-3-15-4.html

Run it and it will show all your file extensions with info on each such as Type, Version, Product Name, Company, Filename, etc..

Click on the "Type" column header to sort it. Look at the items with "Context Menu" as their type. Odds are one of these is causing your problem.

Select all of the Context Menu items, then go to "File\Disable Selected Items."

Restart your computer and see if the problem is solved. If not I'm sorry I couldn't help. If it is solved you may want to enable the items one at a time until your problem reappears. Then just disable the problem item again and you are good to go.

Hi,
I've just starting having real trouble with Windows Explorer in Windows 8.  Whenever I right-click on anywhere in a local file, or right-click on a local drive, Explorer freezes. I cannot even create a new folder without Explorer crashing.  As
I can't right click anywhere, I can't take ownership of the folders to confirm that this isn't a permissions issue. I'm really at a dead end with this.
I have seen that people have had a problem with this in the past when right-clicking on items in the left-hand pane in Explorer, but this problem is much more widespread, as it is affecting every local folder. I followed the advice given in previous posts.
I downloaded ShellExView and disabled each item of the Context Menu type that was non-Windows in turn to see if that solved the problem. I then tried disabling all items that were non-Windows to see if that would work. Neither worked and I still have the problem.

The Windows Explorer behavior when you use mouse or keyboard should be the same. The issue you described can be caused by third party programs or Windows Explorer add-ons.

You may boot in Clean Boot Mode to troubleshoot

If the issue occurs in Clean Boot Mode, you may use ShellExView.

Run ShellExView, in the pane sort the entries with manufacturers. Disable all non-Microsoft *.dll files, and check the result. If the issue does not occur, one of the files can be the culprit. This file is found in two (2) places on the hard drive - C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\Drivers\Video. Which leads me to believe that it's an old file that was in place from the old motherboards on-board video. I've tried un-installing the Intel Graphics entry through Add/Remove programs but the screen just blinks and remains the same. I've located the file in 2 locations in the Registry but it's under a Microsift Search Assistant path so I am uncertain if it's actually a video problem or not.

The new Motherboard is a Gigabyte 8S661FXMP-RZ and I am using the on-board SIS video.

Any ideas? One thing that I have not tried yet is to put an actual video card in the system to see if that changes anything.

Thank ya'll,

**Note** I can get into the Display settings by going through the Control Panel and can see that the Display on the Settings tab is correctly identifying the SIS Video. Also, under Device Manager, the SIS Video is all that appears under the Display Adapte... Read more

Hello,
I am building a new PC and had it running fine until I just noticed recently that whenever I right-click on the desktop to view Properties, Explorer.exe crashes hard and I have to reboot. The only thing I have installed recently is Office 2007 and SP3. Before I start uninstalling all of that I thought I'd ask the group if they have seen this recently. I searched for the error here and only found reports from pre SP3 users so I thought I'd ask first.
I've included my PC stats and the Application error logs below.

A:Windows Explorer Crashes on right-click

I ran Spybot Search & Destroy, and that did pick up a few traces of spyware, but still explorer crashed. Finally after reading post after post on this kind of issue, someone mentioned that perhaps it was something in the Context Menu (ie right-click).

Of course it was difficult to know what was in the context menu, so seeing as any attempt to open it crashed explorer. So down into the registry I went...
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

I had recently downloaded and installed StuffIt, and it seemed to do just that. As soon as I uninstalled StuffIt my right-click menu was happy once again.

Hooray.

Thought that this post might as well remain here, as it may save someone else the hours of hair-pulling frustration that this problem caused for me.

Note:

If you have this problem it may not necessarily be from StuffIt, but check the registry and see what things are in the Context Menu.
If it happens on all files, then check it for "*", otherwise check the specific file extension.

A:windows explorer crashes when I right click

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hey, I've had a few issues with my laptop. My tech level is pretty high however I don't know how to go about fixing this because I'm new to vista. Not sure what caused the issue but recently when right clicking anywhere on my desktop Explorer.exe crashes and restarts itself.

Thanks for your help; I am running Windows Home Premium vista 64bit, it sounds like a compatibility issue / shell. I've heard windows aero theme can cause problems but it's the only theme available without using windows blind IIRC.

I tried killing explorer.exe and then running it again but that didn't fix it. I also tried restarting my PC and that didn't work either.

A:Solved: Windows Explorer crashes or right-click

Right-click crashes are caused by third-party shell extensions.
Effective usage of ShellExView to resolve right-click problems
Download ShellExView (from nirsoft.net) and run it. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using "Type", so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.
The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

the last thing i remembered added in the context menu was a bat file in "send to" folder(not without my consent so not malware issue).
The bat file's function was to move files in a folder within the folder it was originally on.
