For a while now, I've had problems with USB devices, but today I was looking online and someone mentioned a solution to a problem I was having, saying to look in Device Manager under the Ports tree.
My Ports tree in DM is gone, but I also don't know how to access my COM3 port or other ports any other way. Should the Ports tree be there?
I've already restarted my computer and entered the BIOS menu, and it said my USB Ports were enabled.
I've already been to the Registry Editor in Blah-Blah key and entered "3" (was already that way).
My ports are just gone. What should I do?

Preferred Solution: Ports Not Shown in Device Manager

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Ports Not Shown in Device Manager

I don't understand much of what you're talking about, so can't help much, if at all.

USB ports should be under 'Universal Serial Bus controllers.'

For what are you using Com3? That's a serial port, isn't it?

Hi all,
can anyone tell me why I can see MiniDriver smartcards on some systems (7 / 2008 R2 / 2008) in the Device Manager and on other systems (same builds) the simply do not show up? In both cases the drivers are installed and the cards are recognized and work
as expected.
I've seen this on several different environments of my customers now and I cannot explain it :D
What's the catch? A policy?

A:Smartcard shown / not shown in Device Manager on different systems

Ok, figured it out, it's all down to the Certificate Propagation Service. Always thought it justs propagates the certs, but not that it also installs the drivers :)

So, my webcam works fine, except for the built in microphone. It is a Logitech 'Quickcam for Notebooks Pro' which is a bit outdated. I looked for the most up-to-date software but I guess they don't have drivers specifically tailored to handle Windows 7.

Anyways, my webcam mic shows up in the device manager and is not disabled, but for some reason, it doesn't show up anywhere else, most importantly in the sound settings, under recording devices. What is the issue here? Thanks in advance for any help

I am having an issue with the hd 4350 card. I read on another post that re-installing windows solved the problem however I have an on-board video unlike the said poster.

Device manager only lists the on-board display adapter, not the 4350. Heres the funny thing, When I run my diag program (pasted below) the 4350 is actually listed. I did RMA the first one I received and was disappointed to see the replacement doing the same thing. Anyway the reason for this post is to find any other possible solutions before I go an re-install windows. Wiping my puter is really the last resort for me but at this point RMA is no longer the issue.

Thanks everyone.

Hello Native,
Go in to your Bios, ( normally delete on boot up), and see if you can disable your on-board video card.
Its the only thing i can think of, I'm assuming you have the latest drivers for the HD 4350 card.
Try this and post your results, good luck.

My wlan card has been dodgy recently disconnecting and reconnecing but now does not work at all.
It is no longer shown in device manager
I installed the drivers for it from the disc that came with it and ones from the internet but no luck
from what I've read online it says my laptop (advent 9617 - ancient i know) came with the Ralink RT73 USB Wireless.

It also keeps popping up "this device can perform faster is you connect to a high speed port"
I took off the casing to have a look at it and I can't see any dodgy wires or connections unless its somewhere I can't see or get to. I just took it out and put it back in but no luck.

I can still get on through wired LAN but live in shared accomodation and it's a bit inconvenient when I'm trying to work. Oh and there's no router problems as my phone and housemates laptops connect fine.

Greetings all!

The DVD RW drive on my HP Pavilion dv9700 series (9920us) is not working. Please find the relevant details below:

1. The drive is Model TS-L632N/HPMH - I think this is Toshiba?
2. It's detected in My Computer as HD-DVD ROM.
3. When I try to play a CD/DVD, the light comes on and spins but then shows "Please insert a disk into HD DVD-ROM Drive (F.
4. The Device Manager detects it as a CD ROM and obviously the Windows generic driver doesn't work. The Device Manager picks it up as an "Unknown Device" and is shown as "NCB XYB09 QNKX SCSI CdRom Drive".

The driver is not available on the HP site, so tried the regedit option. I believe I deleted all the strings associated with the driver key!! Then tried the Microsoft tool, which must have installed the generic driver which causes the DVD drive to be recognised as a CD ROM instead. I tried the sfc /scannow as well and it shows that there are corrupt files, which could not be fixed. The laptop works well otherwise.

Please help! Where can I find the driver for the drive? How can I go about fixing this issue?

I just reinstalled Win 7 Pro on my Elitebook 8460p. When I open the device manager, I do not see any network adapter, wireless or otherwise. How can I find my wireless adapter, so that I can install it and if needed download the appropriate drivers?

A:No network adapter shown in device manager

Hi: You should see a device labeled as a Network Controller under an Other Devices category in the device manager. The Network Controller will have a little ! mark inside a yellow triangle. That is the wireless card that needs a driver. Since there can be more than one model wireless card in that notebook series, I don't know what driver you need to get the card to work but that is easy enough to find out. Please post the hardware ID for the device you see listed as a Network Controller. To find the hardware ID, click on the device labeled as a Network Controller. Then click on the details tab at the top of the network controller window. Now you will see a Property drop down list and it will be set to Device Description. Drop down on that list and select the 2nd item (Hardware ID's). Post the top string of characters that you see in the window.

A:Beats Audio Drivers Not Shown in Device Manager

Hello HONEYGUJAR,  Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63501-64000/sp63555.exe When done, hold down the Windows key and press RInto the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall and restart. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook and let windows fully load. Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GBL84I am not an HP Employee

I own a Acer Aspire S3-951 ultrabook.

I accidentally installed the wrong drivers yesterday while updating the device drivers as I ran into internet trouble and diagnostics said there seems to be a problem with either the drivers or hardware. Ever since the system is unable to detect my network adapter. It should be an Atheros ar5bwb225 adapter. When I boot the system there was a big red X and no connection, so I ran diagnostics and it said I didn't have the drivers (the incorrect drivers installed over the old one). In Device manager, unfortunately neither the old nor new(wrong) drivers are displayed, so I tried to uninstall the Atheros installation program to remove the wrong drivers.

That ran into trouble as the wrong drivers could not be uninstalled because it was unable to locate the network card for the wrong drivers. So I downloaded the correct driver from the Acer website and ran setup. Setup could not be completed because it says my network adapter is unplugged.

Followed a few different links on this site including the IP reset in this post: http://www.sevenforums.com/network-s...but-s-not.html

Also disabled, uninstalled and removed Bonjour. With IPconfig, as I'm using a USB wireless adapter temporarily it shows:

Hi Amitkd44,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
Try to check first if the DVD drive show up in the BIOS (FN + F2 on restart or from off status using the Novo button).
This would allow you if the physical dvd device is mechanically detected by the motherboard and is not related to any drivers or Operating System.
Initial tab should show the same drive listed along with the harddrive within the BIOS screen.
If so, then reseating the drive (removing and placing it back making sure contact points are secured.
Here is the hardware manual that can help as a guide.
Update us soon as convenient.

I recently put together a new computer, and in the process of of installing the USB 3.0 connector from the front of my GX500 case, I either bent numerous pins on the motherboard USB 3.0 header or the motherboard shipped that way and I inadvertently made matters worse. Anyway, that header on the motherboard is without a doubt unusable.
Since I don't really need the USB 3.0 functionality, I bought a USB 3.0 -> 2.0 adapter cable, connected one end to the connector on the front of the case and the other end into the USB 2.0/1.1 header on the motherboard. Unfortunately, when Windows 7 boots and I plug a device into the front ports of the case, Windows detects the front USB ports as "Unknown Device" within Device Manager yet says the driver is successfully installed. I've already downloaded the most current Intel chipset drivers for my motherboard, deleted and reinstalled all USB drivers, and all rear USB connections are working perfectly fine - it's just the two front ports that are connected from the case to the USB 2.0/1.1 ports via the adapter cable.  I've tried both USB 2.0/1.1 headers on the motherboard, and I've tried plugging in several devices to the front USB ports, and this problem still persists.
I've ensured the connection inside the case is solid, yet I cannot get Windows to recognize the front USB ports.  However, I have confirmed that power is being sent to the front ports because it charges my phone when I connect it to the front USB ports via m... Read more

Hi there,After upgrading my T540p to Windows 10 I struggle to enable the build-in Intel Wifi card N7260 which worked fine before in Windows 7.I run all Windows updates and used Lenovo System Update to update all driver but still neither Windows 10 is showing any Wifi option nor is the N7260 shown in the device manager.I tried both the driver I found on Lenovo download area and the one from Intel as well. N7260 wasn't detected automatically in the device manager. Finally I manually added the card in the device manager and tried to update the driver but it told me the best driver is already installed and in the properties I have seen an error message "Code 31" with a comment saying Windows is unable to load the driver. So I wonder if N7260 can be used at all with a T540p under Windows 10.Can anyone say what else I could do beside using the laptop with a Wifi stick? I am trying to install a program to connect a physical therapy device to my laptop and having a problem with changing the port settings. Below, I have copied the instructions sent to me by the manufacturer. The problem is that once I get to the Device Manager folder, I don't see any listing for ports. Can anyone help me to figure out what to do now?

Here are the instructions I received. Thank you very much for any help anyone can provide!
Your problem is to install the USB to serial adaptor correctly. (USB cable to 9 pin male D sub)
If you don't have one let us know.

You can verify the correct installation as follow:

Go to the Start Button ( lower corner on Screen) press left mouse button.

Make following steps:

Control Panel - Device Manager - Ports(COM LPT) - Communications Port or Profilic USB to Serial Comm Port (Port 2)

If the Port is greater than 4 do the following:

Click with the right mouse button on the selected port,
select Properties - Port Settings - Advanced - COM Port Number COM2 ( select COM1 or 2 3 4 aslo if in use)

Start the GIGER MD Programm ; ALL Programs - GIGERMD- Port2

If the message appears NO CONNECTION, setup in the Device Manager another Port 1-4 and start the accordant Port in all programs - GIGERMD Portx

Hey lads,

So I am not a computer genius, but I am not completely clueless and I have been struggling with this issue for a while now. I have searched high and low trying to find a solution.

My computer will recognize the two usb ports on the rear of my cpu (I also have 2 on the front). The two on the front however are not only not recognized in Device Manager, but when I plug a device such as my thumb drive or mouse it seems to turn the power off of the rear ports. Eg. If my mouse is plugged into one of the USB ports on the rear, and I plug my thumb drive into one of the front ports, my mouse will completely turn off and will not return until the other device is unplugged and Windows is restarted. I am not sure if this is a driver or hardware issue or what, but any help would be much appreciated as I am a student who has very little money to replace things.

Computer Specs as follows:

Asus Computer with Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 2.40GHz
512 MB of RAM
Windows XP PRO SP3
NVidia Geforce 100/200 graphics card

I am not sure what other info you may need, but if you ask I will tell.

I'm using an dell inspiron laptop with windows vista. Few days back, installed windows Xp professional successfuly. The main purpose I installed xp was to program a microcontroller via the com ports. But to my surprise the com ports were not listed in the device manager in XP! Any help??

A:COM Ports not listed in device manager

Are you sure the laptop actually has a COM Port? Finding a laptop with a COM port newer than a Pentium III model is rare, as they have been all but replaced by USB.

Make sure you're not confusing a VGA port for a COM port. Same size and shape but the VGA has 3 rows of contacts (15 total) instead of 2 rows of contacts (9 total) for a COM port.

If the laptop shipped with Vista I'd be surprised if it did. Even many 4-5 year old laptops that shipped with XP don't have a COM port.

If it does have a COM port, check in the BIOS to make sure it's not disabled

Second option was Aproposfix which I assume is to get rid of some specific spyware/adware/malware.

Third was I tried editing some permissions in the registry but I didn't really understand what I was doing.

I have a system with an Intel DG31PR mobo.

I installed a hard drive and setup Win XP. After updates I noticed a few issues, namely that none of the USB ports work. I also noted a SM Bus Controller in the Device Manager that would not update.

I went online and found the chipset drivers for the mobo. When running it removes and installs new USB controllers, but the setup keeps stalling during the first installation of USB 2.0 controllers. I left it running for hours before ending the processs. Now I have a USB root hub with no driver listed in the DM. If I try to run the driver setup again it picks up right where it left off but still stalls. I have tried uninstalling the USB controllers and root hubs, but any attempt to remove them or even to scan for hardware changes causes DM to freeze up, and then the computer won't shutdown without a hard reset.

Is this a bug in the chipset drivers? I have considered upgrading to Vista (as the computer sans hard drive has a key for it) The hard drive was part of a OEM HP system with a dead mobo. I formatted the hard drive to put in this system.

What to do, what to do....

OS: Win XP, SP2
CPU/Ram: 1.50 GHz, 512 MB
System Manufacturer: Dell Inspiron 8600

Recently, this is what I did.
1) I upgraded the BIOS

2) partitioned the HD

3) reinstalled the OS and upgraded to XP SP2 from SP1.

Now in the Device Manager, there is no section for "Ports"

In Device Manager, originally when I clicked "show hidden devices", under "Non-Plug and Play Drivers", there were warnings/error notices next to "parport" and "serial".

I can't print or sync my Palm. Other USB stuff works. Strangely, when I installed the Palm Desktop software, it let me sync one time. When I went into the settings to set up my e-mail sync, I got an error that the COM 1 port wasn't available and it switched to COM 3. I won't sync now.

I tried deleting the "parport" and "serial" drivers and they don't (immediately) return when I restart or "scan for hardware changes", but eventually show up again.

Thanks for any help you can give.

PS, if those photo links don't work, try these

1) Dell says the BIOS won't cause a software problem, but......
2) In Safe Mode, it all looks the same.

Hi All, please help to show/return the ports (com & lpt) menu on the device manager... previously is working and i did not make any changes on the BIOS... thanks...

A:the ports (com & lpt) on device manager are missing

1) Check to see if the device is hidden. For this, click show hidden devices under View, then expand all the nodes under device manager. Uninstall any entries which appear grayed out, then restart. Then try plugging your external device to the computer and see if it works.

2) Make sure that in the BIOS the ports are enabled and set to 'auto'.

3) If that does not work, try installing the drivers for your device manually.

When I go to the Device Manager, there are no com ports listed under Ports (COM & LPT). The only thing listed under Ports is 'Unknown Device'. This is occuring on a Motion Computing Tablet Model LE 1600. We just recently had it sent back to have the motherboard replaced.

We didn't notice this problem until we attemped to connect a Leica GPS unit in ArcMap.

How do we get the COM Ports back?

A:COM Ports Missing - Device Manager

Be sure that the port is enabled in BIOS. Try removing it from Device manager and rebooting for reinstallation.

If BIOS allows it, and the above does not work, try changing the IRQ or memory used by COM1.

PC is Windows 7 Pro 64bit, MSI Z77 MPOWER motherboard.

I'm attempting to flash a bootloader to my 3D printer, which requires connecting it to my PC via USB and using the Arduino software. Unfortunately when doing so the Com ports menu in Arduino was greyed out no matter what I tried and so I couldn't select the printer or USBasp device.

On further investigation, I discovered that the COM & LPT section isn't present in my Device Manager, and using "mode" in CMD returns CON info but no details on COM & LPT ports at all. I went into the BIOS and ensured all USB-related options were enabled, which they already were, and additionally I updated the drivers for both of the motherboard's USB 3.0 controllers. Still nothing.

I feel at this stage I must be missing something stupendously obvious, but I'm drawing a blank. Can anyone suggest what's going on/a fix?

I'm working on a Averatec 3260-EH1. First Averatec I've looked at. Little brother's friend brought it to me because the modem quit working. (They live in the country without any other option but dial-up.) They think it happened when they tried ot install an iPOD. His wife had already reinstalled Windows with no luck. However, I re-installed Windows XP Home also just to make sure I had a clean slate and I'm getting the same problem. I downloaded the driver from Averatec's site. When I install it & re-boot, it shows up briefly in DM, but still doesn't work & then it disappears again. While it is there, it states to be using Com 4. (I have not at any point had the New Hardware Wizard appear.) So, I started looking at different angles and noticed that no ports were listed in DM. I went through Add New Hardware and added Com port. It came up with an error about resources. It was using IRQ 3 which I believe is correct for Com 4, yes? There are no external devices plugged in. I wondered if the modem was just bad, but that wouldn't explain the missing ports. All input is much appreciated. Any ideas?

I am running Windows XP home. I was able to view comm ports earlier today in device manager but I had to re-boot my PC and now the Comm Ports do not show up in device manager. Does anybody have an idea as to why this might be happening.
