Random Internet Drops During Specific Time Period

Q: Random Internet Drops During Specific Time Period

Hey everyone, I looked around a bit and although I found quite a few similar issues, I was unable to find any exactly like the one I'm having.

Basically, every weekday, during the approximate hours of 7am-5pm, my internet will constantly drop. By this, I do not mean it completely stops working. I mean that every few seconds, or minutes, my internet will cut out for about 5 seconds. The reason that this is such a huge problem is I play online video games, and working random part-time hours quite often places me in between these hours when playing. Also, these drops take place even if I'm not on games. My computer will usually be the only one online, and no matter what I'm doing (even just doing something like reading an article online), the problem persists.

My ISP is Comcast, and my router is an ASUS RT-N56U.

Here is my system information:

I should also mention that the router is new, and the problem existed before I bought it. I believed that my old router was the problem, and clearly I am wrong. Also, my router has a WEP on it so there shouldn't be anyone leaching off of my network. These also are nowhere near peak hours, which adds even more confusion. I do live near a school, which would normally be open around these hours. However, it's summer.. so that isn't the case. Thanks in advance for any help!

Preferred Solution: Random Internet Drops During Specific Time Period

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Random Internet Drops During Specific Time Period

You should change your wireless security to WPA2 with AES encryption.

The WEP you are using now is outdated and easily hacked into and usually will not work correctly with Windows 7 drivers. This could also cause the connection problems you are seeing now.

You should also uninstall any third party A/V software on this system as they are famous for causing such as you are describing.

Hi,

i am using IE7 with latest updates for both it and windows XP...

i have recently got my pc back from a friend having been away for 2 years...it seems they didnt maintain it very well in terms of virus protection and updates!

I have spent a large chunk of time downloading all the recent updates and have cured some problems but not the this....

I get the 'page cannot be displayed page' after a random period of time after booting. MSN messenger still works but not the internet or pokerstars which i've been on! (luckily for play money at the moment!)

i have had a long read through various sites including this one and have tried various things, including downloading 'malwarebytes' 'adaware' and 'hijackthis'

malwarebytes picked up 6 problems and they have been removed, i was wondering if someone could check this HJT log for me as my exp with the registry is basically 0.

Thanks

Ok so here's my situation. I will try to make it make sense as much as possible.

We have a home network with two laptops [IBM ThinkPad: XP and Sony Vaio-mine: W7] and two desktops [HP: XP and Compaq: XP], along with a wired-networked OfficeJet AIO, and a wired-networked PS3 On a Belkin N+ Gigabit Router. Everything is on 10/00 Cat5; the gigabit router was on sale and cheaper at the time so why not.

Anyways, this is the problem I am having. It is with my laptop specifically, the Sony Vaio running Windows 7. Every day, between the hours of around 8PM local and around 5AM local, I can be on the internet on Facebook, watching something on Hulu, streaming a movie from my laptop to my console, or playing a game, it doesn't matter: My connection will seemingly drop out. When it does, I try to ping the router at 192.168.2.1 and when I DO get a response, it's roughy 3500-4500ms before a response comes back, if it comes back at all. After about 10 minutes, it slowly returns--as in pings will come back, but will take 2500ms, 1500ms, 500ms, 200ms, and then back to <1ms like normal. This can happen as many as ten times in a night, or as few as three. I do know for a fact it WILL happen every night.

So I tried something, I turned off my wireless and plugged into the network via Cat5 and not only did my internet connection come back to normal but it does not drop at all. I thought it might be the wireless radio, but the other laptop that connects via wireless never has this prob... Read more

Okay, this is a very odd problem.

What happens exactly is that at what seems a random point of time, usually long after the computer's been turned on though, a very loud buzzing and static-y sound will start playing from my speakers (or headphones if they're plugged in). This goes on for about 5 seconds, and then all audio cuts. Oddly enough, if I even try to play a sound (say I press Play on a song in Winamp) it won't even play the song at all, almost as though it knows the sound won't work. If I let a video play, there's a big lag time before it starts, and then it plays, but without sound.

If I wait long enough, usually about 5 minutes, the sound comes back. I at first thought it might be my speakers, considering they're almost 6 years old, but when I noticed this would happen to my headphones too, I figured it was the sound card. My sound card is a Creative SB X-Fi.

Any other information that you need, please just tell me. I hope this problem isn't as odd and uncommon as I think it is =P

All help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

What are your complete system specs? Have you tried updating the sound card drivers directly from Creative's support site?

I keep randomly having BSOD on WIN 7 x64 when i left it on for long periods of time without using it. Sometimes though rarely, the whole OS will not respond to anything while i'm using and i have little choice but to use the reboot button. I have no idea what causes this issue. This has been happening since i got this computer roughly 1 year plus ago but i didn't really bothered till recently as it's getting more frequent. Was hoping someone can shed some light on to what is giving this issue to me.

The crash is due to your Marvell controller drivers for your hard disk. The drivers appear to be corrupted.

First uninstall through Device Manager. Log in as an administrative user -> Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager -> Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Right click the Marvell device -> Click Uninstall (Do not hit OK after clicking Uninstall) -> Put a tick in the box to delete the driver software for this device -> Click OK -> Restart the computer if asked.

Hello everyone -

I would like to express my sincere thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out. I am completely baffled by an ongoing occurence and I hope that you can help me. I am running WIndows XP pro on a dell inspiron 8600 1.8 pentium M w/2 gig RAM and a built in ethernet card. Each day, at least once, some days as many as 5 or 6 times, I am suddenly unable to access the internet. The browser I am using is IE 6.0.2900 ( I also installed firefox and it cannot accesss the net either) and I have all the current XP service packs installed. The browser will not open any webpages and says basically that they cannot be found. If I reboot the computer, the problem goes away and I can access eveything again, sometimes I'm good for the whole day and sometimes I am off again in less than an hour. Now here is the really strange part. I am on a LAN with 15 other computers and mine is the only one this is happening to. In addition, when my tech guy runs the "ping" program, it shows my computer is actually connected to the internet, which explains why I am still able to send and receive emails without any problem! I have tried connecting via a pcmcia card and the built-in wireless card after I seemed to have lost my access to the internet, but the same thing happens with both of them. We are complelety stumped - can anyone shed any light on this?

Sincerely,

R. Patrick Sutton

I've read about this problem around these forums but mine is a bit different. I have Windows XP Pro SP3. After a random period of maybe 30 mins to a few hours, my internet connection seems inexistant. PC reacts like there is no internet cable plugged in. I've checked the ipconfig command in command prompt before my internet shuts down and after and there was a change. A few lines(IPs) were missing after my internet fell.

Does anyone know that my problem is about and how can I solve it??

I'm not sure if this is being caused by malware or spyware, I am just gonna make sure. My computer keeps telling me something is wrong with the Winsock Provider Catalog. My internet will work for a little while and then I will lose connection. Then I will have to restart the computer in order to get back on the internet. I notice I lose connection faster if I'm downloading something.

this is a problem that is similar to many other posts on this site, but is just unique enough that the solutions don't work:

overview:
recently my internet has stated to err after a short period of time of being open. I have a DYNEX wireless enhanced G usp Adapter for my desktop so I can use the wireless in my house.
Specifics:
My computer is running win XP sp3. while on the internet my dynex adapter stops flashing, and the wireless icon turns red and says that it has "limited or no connectivity" When i try to re-connect to a wireless network, the computer says it's appempting to re-establish a connection...it never succeeds. the only thing that allows me to go on the internet is a restart. I have run every registry cleaner, disk cleaner, malware remover and AntiVirus that I know of, and no success. I have tried System restores, CCleaner, CHKDisk, and "repair connection" all to no avail. I have tried re-installing the driver about eight times.

Sorry I posted this in the wrong forum earlier.  I missed this one.

My computer is Windows 7 Professional.   It's almost three years old, and I haven't had any trouble on it until recently.

Despite my internet being connected tonight, I found there were websites I could not access.  In fact I couldn't access any of them.  Eventually I was able to access google, and then later a couple of other sites, but never too many at a time.  Then more websites started to work, but others wouldn't work.  I called my ISP, but they weren't able to detect a problem.
I put my computer in safe mode and was able to come here for help.  I've done a malwarebytes scan, but nothing came up.  For some reason this also seemed to effect my PS3 (connected wirelessly to my modem)

I'm at my wits end, and have no idea what to do.  Help would be much appreciated. I'm not sure if this is malware related or not.  My ISP seemed to think it could be a problem with the system, though I'm now able to access this forum and any other website without problem without being in safe mode.  I'd think that if my PS3 had trouble connecting, that it wouldn't be malware, but I'm not as computer savvy as I'd like to be.  (I'm not computer incompetent either thanks to working with computers for most of my life)

A:Internet wouldn't connect to certain websites for a period of time

Have you tried resetting your router/...?

This is usually achieved by inserting a paperclip into a tiny hole located on the router.....google your router model number to determine exactly where it is.

Press the paperclip end in and hold it in for approx 20 seconds...then release it and wait for the router to boot back up again

Note Be sure  you have the password for your internet a/c/router BEFORE you start.

I recently moved in with my aunt, and I had this same problem last summer when I visited. Now that I live here, its a much bigger issue :/

my laptop, which connects fine to all other wireless networks, has trouble on this one. It can browse the web all day, but the second a large file begins to transfer (video, a file download, etc.) it will drop the connection randomly, usually rather quickly. The computer does not need to be restarted to reconnect, it often reconnects on its own near-immediately, though sometimes I have to go to the system tray and reconnect manually.

I thought it was too far from the router, but my tower in the same room connects flawlessly, and going in to the same room as the router doesn't help. This same laptop has been fine on every other network, and every other computer is fine on this network. I've web crawled off and on about this for months, but no one's problem is limited to one computer/network combination.

If the solution is in a setting on this laptop, that would be awesome - the network is used for my aunts business and I'm really hesitant about changing any settings, and since it works for all other devices theoretically the router settings should be something I can adapt this device to as well. crossing my fingers, thanks guys!

Hi, so basically ever since I got my laptop, every other month, my internet becomes limited or just completely drops out. However, I am sure it's not my broadband because my other electronics' internet seem to work well.  It says that my driver is alright so I don't really know the problem. Also, sometimes the internet just randomly switches to ethernet. I just don't know what to do. SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!

Hello, I'm new here.
Long story short, I have Verizon, they can't/won't help me.

I have a verizon 7500 modem/router, connected to my pc and xbox 360 (both wired).
I've been having random internet drops for about 3 weeks now. Verizon tried everything from lowering my speed to sending a tech guy out, nothing helped. All of their line tests say nothing is wrong, which obviously isn't the case.

Can anyone save me from this hell? It would be appreciated greatly.
I've attached my HJT log so take a look.
Thanks.

p.s. I have XP sp3.
My antivirus is Norton 360.
If any other info is needed, just tell me and I'll try and get it.

Basically it's simple. I'm running a brand new laptop with 64 bit windows 7 installed using wifi from an ativa wireless G router and a basic cable modem. My problem is every time I try downloading a torrent, whether it be from Mutorrent, vuze or bitcomet, it will download for about 50.0 kb/s and then drop back down to zero and my internet will not work at all. My computer will still say it is connected and the router will still have the "wireless" light shining but every time I try doing something data will not send and I will get told to restart my router. The only thing I know to do is restart my router but that's only a temporary fix until i try downloading another torrent. Pleeeaaassseee help me! Thanks in advance

I noticed (at least when im online this late) that the internet goes down between 12-1am PST everyday. I contacted Time Warner Cable and they recommended running a direct connection from modem to computer for testing.

I replaced my WRT54GS router recently with a WRT54GL because of a similar connection issue. I put the stock firmware on it this time (No DD-WRT or Tomato).

After the connection goes down I disconnect the cable modem for a couple minutes/reconnect and it's good to go.

I'm not sure if this could be it, but could it be when the router leases renew everyday (someone said it was transparent i guess that means it shouldn't matter?)

Anyway, any help?

More info: ALL connections go down. It has happened during the day if I recall correctly but usually around the same time 12-1am every night. Thanks

A:Internet Connection Drops Same Time Everyday

Usually the lease renewal occurs half way through the lease and is transparent.

If you (your router's WAN that is) are losing connection at the half way mark there is something strange going on (something I do not understand).

If you are losing it at the end of the lease it means it did not get renewed for some reason.

If you are losing it at the same time every day because that's when your Time Warner Cable scans their network for invalid equipment then you need to find out why. Find out if they check for the MAC Address of the device connected to the modem. (Note that not all tech support people are even going to know about this.) If they do, you need to get them to change their records to your router's WAN MAC Address, or set your router to use whatever Time Warner is looking for. At the same time check to see if their records correctly identify your modem's MAC Address.

I guess Time Warner could be doing some kind of maintenance (other than the above mentioned scan) on their network and causing a brief outage, but that doesn't seem too likely to me.

Alas, that is one of several useful items Microsoft decided you don't need or want so it was removed.

I use a free third party software called Agent Ransack to handle all but the simplest file search functions:

A:Random internet drops, can't even access router sometimes.

You have a variant of the SDbot virus showing in your log. Even though the Virus has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, there is no way to be sure what information has been stolen from your system. If you do any banking or have recently paid for goods or services online you will need to change all passwords where applicable and it would be wise to contact your bank or credit card company to inform them of your situation. This also applies to passwords for any confidential sites you use such as Paypal, Ebay, Email etc... The infection you have has the ability to download and execute files, log keystrokes, Redirect connections, Sniff sent packets for information & Steal personal information so it is a very serious threat.

Hello everyone

Our college dorm is like a 4 story building with two corridors on each level having a wifi router after every 6 meters that serves probably 5 rooms ( each room having 2 people). The internet is provided to us by our ict dept which for some reason no one knows where it is.

So the problem is that during summertime especially, this issue comes up. 2 guys sitting in the same room, 1s getting a perfectly smooth internet and the others internet drops after every few seconds for about 10 seconds. At times, a guy sitting in my room will be getting disconnections but i wont. Other people on the floor are facing this issue too. I have confirmed that the channels being used by the wifi modems/routers (sorry i dont know the difference) is either 1, 6 or 11 on all of them.

The wifi signal remains the same during this "disconnection" period. I still see 4 bars but i cant surf or if im downloading it goes down to 0 kbps for about 10 seconds or more then comes back for a little while before disconnecting again.

I cant understand the issue. What just happened now is that on a pc my friend was using a usb tp link tl-wn722n to access wifi and he was facing disconnections. All he did was come to my room get my roomates tp link(same model) and its working perfectly for him now.

Please for the love of goodness help me.

A:Random Internet Drops on College Dorms Wifi During Summers

Yes that is very common in Dorms. It all depends on how they have the WIFI A/P's are set up.

The IT group could also be using the Summer break to upgrade equipment, replace bad Ethernet cables, switches, etc.

You need to go talk to the IT dept. for the school and see what is going on.

My son had to use a Netgear Ac USB external adapter with a USB jumper to get a proper signal in certain areas on his campus.

Doing a similar fresh installation on anther PC does not reproduce the problem.

Hello and thanks for reading!

(attached: Xirrus Wi-fi inspector network screen shot & screen shot of other networks in range)

About 8 months or so this started happening...i have yet to figure it out.
(The router worked fine for years before this.) I'm not too tech savvy, i read through the other post concerning wireless disconnects.

My internet connection goes out at least once per day.
It almost always happens when I visit Google Maps or search in Google Images.

This happens on my laptop and desktop.
It only happens when the laptop is wireless and the desktop is going through the router.
(so it seems to be a router problem-If I plug the desktop directly into the modem, that seems to solve the issue.)

I have up-to-date firmware.
I've tried changing the channels to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Ok, so my laptop has been on its last legs for a while now, always something. Recently, the fan stopped working so I have to diligently make sure it doesn't overheat. I was playing an online video game 2 days ago when it overheated and crashed (forced shut off to de-powered state to prevent damage, not a bluescreen). When I brought it back up, I started having some really bad problems. The game I was playing wouldn't start citing "Memory at address 063eaff0 could not be written" After deleting the whole game and restarting the computer I got it re-installed, it works fine now, that's resolved, I guess.

I think this crash broke something though, because now my internet keeps cutting out at random intervals, and Chrome keeps freezing. The Chrome freezes actually almost always predict an internet drop.

So I booted into HP's system diagnostics and ran a memory test, it says I passed. Ran a full scan, hard disk passed, processor passed, WLAN passed, PCI Devices pass, battery pass, . Basically everything is passing but I can't actually complete a full scan because it takes 2 hours and apparently is really using my system to its max ability, which is making it critically overheat and shut off.

So I booted into a recovery CD to see if maybe a system file was corrupted during a power loss crash, but apparently I am mis-remembering how recovery CD's work and my only options are to restore to factory default or restore to an earlier point, not to just re-insta... Read more

Hello, I'm sure Shawn is aware of this setting, and I'm sure he'll eventually read this, and can link me to the post to how to do it =)

I have my computer set up to when it is idle after 5 minutes, it will turn the screen blank for 3 seconds then it will show the lock screen. Sometimes I'm at the computer desk busy doing something non-computer related, and all of a sudden I notice in the corner of my eye that the screen goes blank. I had the computer set up to whenever that happened I grab the mouse real quick and move it to come right back to whatever was showing on the screen before it goes to the lock screen. Reason why I want to catch it right in time is so I don't have to re-type the password at the lock screen. There is a setting somewhere that lets me do that. Where is it again?

A:PC Reboots itself after being on for a period of time

That processor is seriously overclocked.

Overclocking reduces the lifespan of the hard ware and also overclocks the RAM and PCI bus, so have you tried not overclocking the system?

There is no point in turning off the overheating monitor in the BIOS if the processor isn't overheating, which it doesn't appear to be doing if its temperature is only 42 degrees.

Since couple weeks ago very strange issues started occuring, internet and network access(path to network share is lost) would come up at random times and on different machines and would last for about 10-20 seconds it would re-connect again.
All the computers are using private addresses.

Most machines are windows 7, some are xp.

Using Windows server 2003 as dc.

Since the occurance is so random it's very hard to pin point the cause, hopefully someone has come accross this issue in the past.

My computer is set to automatically lock after 10 minutes of user idle. I want to run a task when I log on, but only if the machine has previously been idle for an hour. This is so the task only runs when I've actually been away from the computer, not just if it's timed out. Is this possible?

A:Run task on unlock after certain period of time

1. Have you tried task scheduler - create task -... triggers - new -begin .. - on WS unlock
Then once it is setup disable it. But you would have to enable it if you knew how long the machine would be unattended.
I did not see any option for the task to run only if idle for 1 hour though.

2. Or you could not use task scheduler - just set up a .bat file and run it manually as needed.

I encountered several BSODs within days of each other. I don't play games or download anything on my PC. I just use it for surfing the net and general usage (mostly Office). I also technically faced a blue screen just 2 days ago. I clicked on a folder and suddenly my monitor flickered and I saw a flash of blue before it went black.

I am using Windows 7 32 bit.

As we can see a memory volume is corrupt somewhere, so lets see if we can track it down.

Can you try this please: Run Chkdsk /f /r to detect and resolve any file system structural corruption. You must restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system partition.

I recently assembled a new rig, meant for gaming. I've updated everything with the latest drivers and all. My problem is this: after a certain amount of time, be it in a game or on a web page, my computer reboots. I haven't been able to narrow down the reason or the culprit, but I was suspecting my video card and my hard drive.

- ATI Radeon HD 4870
- Seagate Barracuda 500GB (fw:3.AAK)
* The rest of my system's specs are in the CPUZ dump I've attached (I believed it was the best way to detail my hardware )

How did I narrow it down to those two? For starters, I have a hunch I don't have enough cooling equipment in my computer case. The thing is, I don't know "how much" is enough or too little. I also haven't found a utility that will show me the temps, besides the system BIOS, but I wanted something that would show me the temps when the parts are working full throttle. So, I believed it was the video card because of some odd glitches I see while playing Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion. When some transparency shaders are shown in the game, the screen shows a diagonal tear going right across my screen from top right to bottom left, corner to corner. By tear, I mean a kind of misalignment. Another occasion where I've seen these glitches was while playing Crysis. I'd see the same diagonal tear, but also it would be accompanied by an odd, black, thick border on the bottom of my screen and the right side. Next to the borders there wer... Read more

My desktop computer recently got BSOD once. I thought it was nothing and so I restarted my PC. After around 10 minutes, it BSODed again. I restarted again and boom! After around 10-15 minutes, another BSOD appeared. What could be the problem? Did something I recently installed cause this?(MagicJack) Or other malfunctions? My computer is really weak and was busted several times before and It was loaded with games but I managed to uninstall almost all of them 2 weeks before it got the BSOD

Hello, been a while. Here is my problem. I have a Dell XPS 7100 desktop PC running Windows 7 home premium that a bought from a family member. Everything has been fine for the last year until now. I would wake up in the morning and the computer would not wake up. The power light is on but nothing would get the screen to come on. I have to hold the power button down and force a restart. After the restart things seem to be fine until after it has been idle for a length of time then it freezes again. I have already changed the sleep settings to never and changed the USB port settings to stay active and not close to save power. Now the computer still freezes but I can see the desktop. Nothing works, mouse, keyboard, ctrl-alt-del, nothing. Any help would be appreciated. I thought it could be a video driver issue, but it freezes with the desktop open.

A:Screen freezes after a period of time.

Turn on Driver Verifier and see if that gets the system to crash instead of freeze. Then provide us the crashdump.
