Two weeks out of warranty screen hinge melted and computer d...

Q: Two weeks out of warranty screen hinge melted and computer d...

As the title says this computer is just two weeks out of warranty and the right screen hinge melted and the computer is completely dead. This is my daughters computer she uses for her school work and it was in her room. It obviously could have started a fire. Not a happy dad. Is this a common problem with HP's in general or this model? What can be done? Thanks. Bill

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My daughter opened her yoga 730 13 laptop and was horrified to see cracks just above the right hand hinge. Still within waranty I contacted lenovo (I have paid extra for an on site warranty as well) who refsued my warranty claim and said they would only deal with it as an out of warranty claim so I would have to pay as it was "physical damage" that was not covered. What an absolute joke. We have done nothing wrong to cause this cracked screen. It clearly appears to be becasue of a design fault in the hinge that has no top pin fitted. What can I do and why on earth should I be expected to pay for a repair that is not out fault at all?  Even if it is repaired, surely it will just keep on happening? Not happy at all with Lenovo's absence of customer care, or complete lack of, on this issue.

I am helping an elderly friend of mine who has a h50-55 that has a "no signal" message on the monitor. I checked the monitor on my laptop and it works fine. I checked all the external connections and they are fine. One thing I noticed: when I start the machine the power light comes on, the machine does NOT beep at all, the fans run inside the machine but other than that it is all quiet and dark>The warranty expired on 2-16-2017 (he's had this issue for a week). Started on 3/3/17, 156 days out of warranty, go figure.Sounds like the motherboard or cpu to me, any opinions.Any way Lenovo would extend warranty since it's so close. I've never had any dealings with Lenovo.

My T580 suddenly one day stopped reading my external USB-C hard drive, I tried updating the drivers and several other suggested repairs with none of them working. The power light on the drive would come on but the computer didn't read it, verified with a second drive and they both work on my other computers. Looking at the timeline, I realized that this happened while the computer was still within it's warranty period, but I was busy and just let the problem go. Then two weeks later the computer just shut down on me and after letting it sit with the lid closed for a while, it was able to restart and I got a warning message at the BIOS screen that "The Power Adapter is of lower wattage than the one supplied with the machine" or something along those lines. Once booted up I was able to see that battery nuber one was fully depleted to 2% and the 2nd battery was at 99%, it then shut down on me again. I ordered a replacement power adapter to test and got the same message and the same symptoms, the computer would basically trickle charge at a rate slower than it consumed power, at this point I finally called customer service and started a repair ticket, this is when they told me that the computer was three weeks out of warranty....I send it in and a week later recieve a repair estimate of $589 to replace the whole motherboard. I called right back and complained that this computer was having problems before the warranty was up and was simply told it was out of warran... As I'm playing a game on my comp it suddenly freezes up and emits a horrible high pitch screach from the speakers. No response to keyboard commands, so I have to hardboot.

But now when I turn the computer on there is no significant activity. There is power, because I can open the DVD rom drive and fans are whirring, but it won't boot up. No output to the monitor or lights blinking or hardware clicks to indicate it is doing something. Just the grim whirring of fans. I wonder if my processor may be fried. Any ideas?

Thanks for any help!

A:Computer suddenly melted down. Need help!

Definitely a hardware failure.

Start by disconnecting everything except the video card (or onboard video),power supply to the board,CPU fan,1 stick of RAM and a keyboard.Try booting it with just these connected. If it boots successfully to the point where it wants to load Windows, start adding 1 device until you find the culprit.

My laptop hinge just broke, and i am past the warranty. Is there anything that can be done about it since its a factory defect? Or at the very least can i send it in and pay for it to be repaired? If so, how much would that cost? I just recently got my new desktop, but i wanted to keep the laptop for other things.

It all happens in Poland, but I am curious as to how customers are treated by Lenovo in other countries.  The story in short: An E31-70 laptop bought 5 July 2017, end of June - does not open due to broken hinge. the shop/service where I have bought the laptop contacts the customer support only to get back reply that I must have act with undue force thus the problem. But there are no traces of "undue force" treatment to the exterior, so upon pointing that out the support changes the tune and says that it is a "secondary failure" not under the warrranty because I should have reported immediately after the first signs that something is wrong. Since the first sign was that day, this is BS, again I point it out but unfortunately in their third communication Lenovo ultimately refuses to repair under warranty. Since I had to open the laptop pretty soon having data on hard disk which I had to access (work deadline), I decided to have my service conduct the repairs and contacted the customer rights advisor. According to her instructions I sent a request for reimbursement after having received the invoice. Lenovo refused again. So I am forced to enter judicial proceedings. I have heard that Lenovo does not try to escape responsibility for shoddy products in such blatant way in other countries. If anyone from the Lenovo is reading this sad story, I would be interested to hear their opinion...Z... I bought my Dell Inspiron 5548 in November 2015. My right hinge is making strange noises and finally it broke off. I want to know how could I get this fixed. I haven't misused it or dropped it at any point of time. since it is not even one complete year, im assuming my laptop is covered under the warranty. probably this is not the first complain Dell is receiving in this model since I saw previous posts complaining of the same problem.

Here I'm attaching the photo of the broken hinge as well as the bill that was given to me when i purchased my laptop.
Let me know whether i should post my service tag/express service code here.

A:Broken Right Hinge Inspiron 5548 In Warranty

A lot of Dell computers like this have this issue and Dell will not fix it for free, even if under warranty. Despite this being a recurring problem and not due to misuse, if you call Dell about the problem, they will try to charge you 160 USD to fix it.

The hinge on my Yoga 730 failed today when I opened the computer. The small plastic cover on the bottom right popped off and the screen separates from the back housing when I adjust the lid. The laptop is still under warranty. I contacted support and was told I would have to pay to have it repaired although still under warranty. The warranty states: Lenovo warrants that each Lenovo hardware product that you purchase is free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use during the warranty period. Why wouldn't this be covered by the warranty? This occured during normal use, just opening and closing it.

I own a Dell Inspiron 5547. I have purchased a Dell notebook for my wife as well and my choice for the company notebook was also Dell. This was because I have trusted the quality and the 3 year warranty.Parts Only warranty 11/4/14 - 11/4/15Carry-in Service/Return to Depot warranty 11/4/14 - 11/4/17
A long time ago, a screw fell out from the notebook and there was no way to put it back, it always came out. Please note that I have never ever tried to do any modifications/repairs on the notebook. As I could not afford to put it into the service for 2 weeks, I've tried to open and close it always with maximum care. Still, it broke eventually and I needed to go to the local Hungarian warranty partner, where I was told that Dell won't cover the issue and I got an offer over USD 150 for repair.
I admit that with turning in the notebook, the damages would have been smaller, but still, the place for the screw would have needed a change and also the plastic and other parts were not as strong as required. I've googled Dell hinge issues and it seems to be a common issue.
In order to keep my trust in Dell, I would like at least a partial guarantee. Else, due to the lack of trust I will need to look for another brand when I will need to replace laptops. This is something I would not like.

Had this unit in for a warranty repair in January. At that time the right hinge was causing the case to seperate. It has made it to the beginning of April, and now the left side is starting to seperate. This unit never leaves the house, and has never been dropped, yet the excessive drag opening the unit normally creates seems to be causing issues. Clearly a design flaw.

My X1's left hinge snapped as I closed the lid a few days ago. Metal fatigue had caused the screen-side panel of the hinge component to snap: the glue binding it to the casing did not hold and the central pivot of the hinge remained in place while the lid it should have stayed fixed to came down. The machine is just over a year old, within my 3 year warranty. However having sent the machine off for repair through the official mechanisms, I've been told that "On inspection of your Lenovo PC, it has been found that the problem was caused by Customer Induced Damage (CID). This is full CID, no in warranty work can be done." The total cost for repairs outside of warranty is quoted at 440.96 GBP - nearly 1/4 of what I originally paid. I've since discovered that X1 hinge problems aren't uncommon on these forums [A]. I've cited these in my contest of the evaluation of customer induced damage: this wasnt the result of an accident or strenuous use - to no avail. Has anybody managed to achieve resolution through warranty? Regards,Barney [A]1. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/How-to-replace-loose-broken-hinges-on-the-x1-...2. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Lenovo-X1-Carbon-Screen-hinge-broken/m-p/4175...3. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Carbon-X1-5th-Gen-broken-hinge-Where-to-get-r...4. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-... Just another sap who bought the Y50-70 Touch. I'm six months out of warranty, and the left hinge has separated from the lid/locked in place. I can't close the lid for fear of damaging the screen, too, so this isn't much of a laptop any more. Never taken it out of the house, but now it's not an option at all - no way to travel with the thing open all the time.I've flipped through the earlier posts on this. Saw how common it was, and how Lenovo was refusing to cover it under warranty at first. After finally investigating it, they changed their tune... for those under warranty. That implies to me that they know they're at fault for the issue, that they shipped a product to customers later found to be defective.I've been extremely careful with this laptop. It's never left the house and mostly just moves from a side table to my lap <2 feet away. Never dropped or anything. When I first got it, I'd hear this cracking sound sometimes when opening the lid, but I thought it was just from the newness and it'd relax. Would just open it really carefully. With how I use it, the machine made it this long - unfortunately past the warranty ending. It's like being penalized because of my caution. So far, no help from customer support. I've had my case escalated once. The second person I spoke to said it was Lenovo's final decision to not fix my laptop. I tried reasoning a bit, suggesting that it'd be an acceptable solution for them to send me the parts free of charge for me to install myself... Read more

I know the graphic card function correctly and the power supplie because he can use them when he reassemble his pc with the old parts :/ The only thing he didn't change was the processor, could it be the issue ? But why the beeps are not about processor problems and instead it correspond to the ram if we believe Asus troubleshooting guide. https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1029959

Ps: I've build many pc's for the past 10 years for me and my friends and i've never seen a case like this. Seriously he tried every 32 combination of ram, removed and change almost everything etc... Nothing seem to work :/
Ps2: He has vga screen with an hdmi adaptator. But he just tested because someone told him it could be the problem with an hdmi screen and the problem still persist.

The screen and hinge has been working fine till couple of days ago, when I lift the screen, I found the lower right corner of the screen glass was cracking and broken into small pieces and the right side hinge is loose. After removing the broken glass at the corner area I found the hinge mount assembly behind the glass was loose and popping out due to failed glue. It is obvious a design or manufacturing issue. In order to hold the heavy screen up in position, the hinges must be made very tight and the hinge mount should be attached to the notebook metal cover with screws instead of very small area of glue. I called Lenovo help center but was told there is no recall for this isse and it was out of warranty. I resecured the hinge mount to the metal notebook cover and the display works fine but the right side area (1/3) of the screen lost the touch sencitive function. At first, I thought the glass was broken by something hitting the glass from outside or dropping, but in fact is was broken by hitting the hinge behind the glass when you open the notebook.

Hi, I'm running win 7 and have been getting occasional blue screens.

The error message is bad_pool_caller. After completion of the sfc/scannow, it reported: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I've attached the dump file below.

This appears to be caused by the Intel WiFi driver.

Go to the support site for your PC and look up the drivers for your specific model, then download and install the Intel WiFi driver and install it. See if that helps.

Ok, I was experiencing random lockups on startup and my PC would frequently not shut down properly the first time. I thought to myself, "Self, you really ought to backup your data and wipe your drive clean and start over." Well Windows saved me the trouble. Over the weekend I hoped that loading a new video driver would help. It seems loading the driver was more than my delicate OS could take. It seems that it either blew away or completely corrupted a vital startup file in my C:Windows\System32\config folder. The file that got deleted or corrupted prevented me from being able to start up windows. I attempted to reload the OS but apparently the SP1 disk I have didn't properly recognize SP2 and it warned that files in the "My documents" folder could be deleted(I managed to back those up).

When I reloaded my OS, it warned that all files associated with the previous OS would be deleted. I chose to not have the file structure deleted and now I have what appears to be duplicate system files on my PC. There are system folders that seem to be from my previous OS load and new cleaner ones from my current load. Also all my previous programs are not in the start menu but I can view the shortcuts by digging into the old system folders. The shortcuts work but give me an invald registry error first. I will provide a list of folders that are replicated when I get home.

My question for all of this is there a way for me to reattach my programs and utilities without ... Read more

Hi,I have a laptop Lenovo Y40-70 and some odd plastic circles came out from it other day (it was in the desk, under the laptop). Then I realized that it started to get hard to open and close the screen.  I removed the plastic cover that is in the edge of the lcd screen to take a look in what could be wrong. And here are some pictures: Left hinge (revit broken):   Rigth hinge (revit without problem):   Plastic Circles (revit heads):That odd plastic circles that came out are like a plastic rivet and it are used to hold a metalic plate that connects the lcd structure to the hinge of the screen. In the absence of it the plate is bending and will brake very soon if it continues like that.I am leaving the screen open for now until I found a way to fix it. I put some oil in the hinge for now, but it didn't give me any softness to open and close the screen. Any one have suggestions how to fix it?

I bought this laptop about 2 weeks ago from currys pc world. I was doing some work with it on charge and then I called someone for about 2 hours and then when I came back to it and wiggled the mouse all I saw was a white screen. I then connected it to an external monitor and did a hard reset deleting everything and it carried out and it is still white. I have removed the battery but I don't think it could be LCD issue as I recently purchased it.

Hey guys,

Im currently using a GA-EP35-DS3L motherboard, and a Tagan 580W psu, with a pentium EE 840 processor, a couple of days ago, I noticed a very bad smell coming from my PC, so I shut it down and opened it to investigate, and saw that two of the 4 pins on the motherboard connector were melted black, the plastic part of one of the pins was completely gone. The worst part was the motherboard was only like 3 months old. Now I dont really know what to do. Is the fault from my PSU or motherboard? If the fault is from my PSU, is my motherboard damaged internally, and vice versa? Because I want to know what parts I should replace, I dont want to spend money on a new mobo/psu if the one I currently have is working correctly.

My kid has been using this laptop and loved it, but mentioned a while ago it was difficult to power it back on after turnned it off. However she managed to work around by putting it in hibernate/sleeping mode only, or recycling the system many times (by holding on power button to force it off). The issue was black screen (no Lenovo logo) but computer was on. I didn't pay much attention because she can still make it work, and I was too busy. Last week, there was a windows update (again) and the computer was forced recycle. It never comes back alive again. The same, computer is humming, but no any visual output on screen, just black. Tried novo button, bootable USB, external monitor, all no use. Check the warranty, just over by 2 months! Asked the service store, to fix will cost at least $200-$300 to replace the motherboard! It does not make sense when spent a bit more could buy a new notebook. But my kid liked it and it does not make sense to throw it away either, when it still looks pretty new and only being used very lightly (schoolwork only). It is sad, especially the brand has been gainning my trust. I probably don't expect a "good" solution either from Lenovo or community, but just throw my frustration here (only because have just registered the account and there is no support email or web form). If Lenovo want to make customer happy, the part shouldn't be so expensive for a short-lived laptop! Just by the way, there are many posts about Ideapad's black screen i... Read more

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
Sorry to hear of all the problems.  Here are a couple of things to try........
First, try a reset of the BIOS.  The procedure can be useful in resolving some hardware conflicts which your computer may have.  Just do this......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 3. Plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.
If you are comfortable working inside your laptop. try this........
Try the reset again with the battery removed.
If the reset didn't resolve the problem then you may have a failed piece of hardware preventing the bootup. Remove the battery, hard drive, optical drive, memory, wireless card and bluetooth if it is installed. Now try to power up the stripped laptop. With all the hardware removed you should have lights come on and it may possibly beep since there is no memory installed. If the laptop is showing signs of life start adding hardware one piece at a time starting with a memory module and boot up the laptop. If it doesn't power up try the memory in the other slot. Also try the other memory module separately in both slots if two are available. If it is still showing signs of life add another piece and boot. Do this for each item until it doesn't power up again. The last piece of hardware installed is your problem part.

OK I have read other post with the same concerns that I have but dosent seem to have the exact same problem i would say. Im running on windows 8.1 now beause i downgraded from the windows 10 thinking that it may resove my issue. Ive tried numerous things with no luck. The things that I have tried so far is trying to recalibrate the touch screen, dosent respond,Looked up the HID compliment touch screen driver looked for errors and updates for the driver nothing.I also uninstalled the driver and re installed it and that didnt work.I went into the device status of the touch screen hardware and it said that the device was working properly, I opened up the HP utility center looked for updates and downloaded them restarted the computer of course...no luck, from there I went into the windows update and checked there. Some updates were installed but none fixed the problem that I had, from there I went to the windows trouble shooter and no updates or issues were found, from there I rebooted my computer and went into the Diagnostics UEFI V,went into componet testing and the touch screen option wasent there as it should be.Now I did all of this while i still had windows 10 so when all of that had failed I tried to do a system restore, that didnt work I downgraded to windows 8.1 and that didnt work and after that I just did a complete reboot of the hardware and had everythinbg erased thinking that would work and of course it didnt.I also forgot to mention after i upgraded to windo... dual 1gb rosewill mem. (2x512)
Compusa 500 watt power supply

Well let me start from the beginning. A few weeks ago my computer started to shut off while I was playing counterstrike 1.6. I checked my temps and they were well below the threshhold. Maybe about 65 C. So I figured it might have something to do with the graphics card being that i wasnt getting any problems outside of the game. I uninstalled the driver software and it gave me a couple errors. "Zero Display Service" error. I spoke with a friend and they told me to use nasty file remover, while booted in safe mode, to remove all the files. By this time I had cancelled windows "adding new hardware" thing, and clicked on the updated drivers I had downloaded from ATI. During setup i recieved two errors. One was an "INF Error : display driver not found" then "Setup could not complete, try installing thye standard VGA driver before beginning setup." Well the only other thing I could do was install using the disc that came with my card. This too gave me an the "Zero display Error" but it still completed the installation. This did not fix my computer shutting off problem. After cleaning out my computer and checking all the connections, and disconnecting and reconnecting I finally got the driver installation to not give me an error. I'm not sure how I did it, I used the cd, but for so... Read more

I have been working on my sons 6-8 year old lap top that was not recognizing the usb ports. When you plug anything (mouse etc) into the port, the screen goes blank and the computer has to be rebooted after which the mouse would work. I had a 2 gig Simpletech thumb drive that I had been using for over a year and it worked fine on everything I pluged it into until, I pluged it into this laptop, the screen went blank, I rebooted and after a few moments when the drive was not found I went to unplug it and it was Hot, real HOT. Hot enought to dimple the plastic housing and destroy the drive. I am at a loss. Any Ideas, thanks

Hey all.

The other day I thought I could smell burning plastic. So I shut down the comp and had a look. The two wires shown below have melted their covering plastic. They go to a front case fan (zalman zm f1 at full speed).

Melted Plastic

The wires come from this connector which comes from an Antec True480(PGB) PSU. These two wires then finish off at a 3 pin male fan connector. This then goes into the 3 pin female fan connector from my zalman zm f1.

Could anyone please tell me why the plastic has melted. Obviosuly the wire itself is too hot which is melting the plastic, but why is that wire getting too hot? I have only been able to smell burning plastic once. The wires now don't seem hot at all, and the computer and front case fan works fine. But it is bothering me, something must have gone wrong?

In case you need em my specs are

amd athlon xp 2700+ (2.16ghz)
1gb ddr 333 pc2700 ram
msi 6777 mobo socket A
msi 6800gt agp gpu
120gb seagate hdd
dvd rw
dvd rom
antec true480 (pgb - uk version)

A:Melted Plastic On Wires (PSU)

Is the gauge smaller on these than the ones of the fan?
(In fact, what's the gauge of the wires)
How many watts is the Zalman using?
If the contact is poor at one end or the other, the wire is making more resistance, and then heating.

Long shot I know but can anyone help?
Teenage daughter shoved wrong laptop charger in..which somehow then overheated and melted it's p;astic parts inside the charger port Have chipped off the plastic but it seems not to work now! Local repairer said it has had it, but I wondered if there was any way of recharging the battery externally? Its a packard bell easynote A

I swear I'm going to sell my girls on ebay!!!

A:melted charger port!!

I would suggest that you get someone to open the laptops bottom part to see if it has melted the motherboard. You can also do this yourself by looking in the owners manual. If it has not melted the motherboard then you can replace the plug area for the wire. Also you can get a brand new wire for the laptop from the company or ebay.

A:melted with driver probs

and welcome to the Forum

That is normal for a fresh install. You can go to the Dell support site, enter your Service Tag Number . . that should reduce the numbers of drivers you are offered.

See this for the order they should be installed:

Went on vacation for two weeks and my toshiba satellite laptop wasn't used at all during that time (was off the entire time). Since I've returned it is running extremely slow. Like 10 minutes to open internet browser with it constantly not responding and scripts crashing. Any tips for fixing it. I've trying to be patient, restarting it, etc., but that doesn't seem to work. Thanks.

A:Slow computer after 2 weeks of no use

How's it work in Safe Mode?  Do you have a lot of tasks starting when you boot up?  What have you done to check for malware?  What browser(s) are you using?  If IE, it's known for being buggy so try Firefox and or Chrome.
Good luck.

I have a compaq presario desktop running vista home edition 32 bit.
I have owned this computer for about one year and a half and I have had nothing but issues.
Finally I have documented my troubles (started November 2009), and every three weeks to the day my computer just slows down to a crawl. Then after a day or two, everything is back to normal. In the process (during the slow time), i will reboot a few times (takes 10 - 15 minutes to start up at times), I will boot up in safe mode (thats quick), and then go back to normal mode and it comes up faster, but still creeps. I am in day 1 of my three week cycle. For the first time, last night, once it started creeping, and I did my first shutdown, a black screen appeared quikly, and I noticed something about task scheduler ( I could not read the details because the screen was up and away in seconds), so I am thinking something could be going on in task scheduler, and perhaps every three weeks something runs....but when I look at what is running I just see normal stuff. (system sound service, system task, TMM, and user task).
I really do not know what the heck is going on. I have spent countless hour researching forums and googling issues, but to no avail. As I mentioned, usually within 24 - 48 hours everything is back to normal. But during this time every third week, I am beside myself.
ANY suggestions are appreciated.
