Q: Solved: Download Speed Fast One Laptop Slow Other

Hello all,

Have been searching for days trying to figure my problem but can't find the solution.

ISP provides us with 20 mb/s download speed. Both Toshiba laptops used to be able to attain this but after reinstalling windows xp on this laptop, it can only achieve 8mb/s. The other laptop will get 20 mb/s whether connected wired or wireless. For the life of me cannot figure what has changed. I have installed all windows updates including SP3 and updated all drivers via Toshiba and Intel websites. It uses the Intel 3945b/g network card and the router is a motorola sbg 6580.

Here is what I have done so far:
Connecting wired will achieve 20mb/s so it has something to do with the wireless setup.
Have tried connecting to router with WPA, WPA2, and no encryption but makes no difference.
Testing right beside the router or 30ft away makes no difference.
Have uninstalled/reinstalled network card but made no difference

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, welcome to this forum!

Please visit this site to measure the real speed of the connection. When done please post the results here.
Internet providers (who gives you the internet) usually make an offer of x speed internet but they only guarantee you to get much less. So the speed might change up and down sometimes. If the internet is still very slow please read the details of your agreement with the internet provider. But first give us the speed results from that site

I'm currently having problems with my streams and download speeds. For example, when i click to download a file from a server that I know should be running quickly it will start out at say, 170 KBS, and then in less than a few seconds it will jump down to say, 70, then to even lower to about 45-50kbs, im running on a DSL line that should be able to support the 170+ KBS download speeds and it seems like something is eating my connection. I have Spybot: S&D installed on my computer and I use it regularly. I also have a router, the other computer is my brothers and im sure its infested with all kinds of viruses and whatnot so im not worried about it, im wondering if there is anything I can do to test how fast my connection speed is, and maybe get some useful programs *free is always nice* to check for trojans, viruses, etc that might be using my connection.

A:Stream and download speed fast to slow

The initial high speed reporting is a common factor in Windows, even in dial-up.

I suspect that it's to do with the data transfer during the time the connection is established and being "measured" being included in the first few seconds as having occured insantaneously. While you should always strive to keep your PC clean, do not immediately blame it for the reporting.

There are many servers involved in every data transfer, a lot of congestion occurs elsewhere, completely independently of the server you are retrieving from.

On my new computer the download speed (broadband) is the crawl of 0.81Mb/sec.using speedtest.net. At the time of test the computer was doing no 'work'. I noticed this slowness when downloading a driver update which was at .89Mb/sec.
Another time when downloading a program it was at .196Mb/sec. Now it is a consistent 0.81 Mbps.

At the same time of the test on three other computers all using the same tester, the same ISP, the same router, the same telephone line in the same house the speed is 2.01Mb/sec. which is the usual speed here.

The fact that they all use XP and have differing hardware should make no difference I think - if I'm wrong I can supply those details. This new computer has a much higher specification than the others but again would this make a difference?

I have done virus and malware scans.

Can anyone explain what could be causing this and how I can fix this please? I can't think of any other relevant info to include at this point.

A:Slow download speed on 1 computer fast on others?

Concentrate on the link between your computer and the router. Replace the cable if it is a wired connection. Use the cable from one of the working systems to test. Also use the same port as one of the fast systems.

If no change, swap the network card or check for updated drivers or chipset drivers if the ethernet connector is on the mainboard
Your router may also have QOS settings that give priority to one or more computers based on ip or MAC address.

Are all the computers wired connections?

Hello
I have a problem with my PC that has been bugging me for a long time.
My web browsing is painfully slow on some sites (SharePoint, sage, office 365, linked in etc. etc.),

It is really annoying as my PC isn?t that old, and isn?t a bad spec.
It?s really frustrating as it makes working a real pain.
Can anyone help please?
I really don?t know how to get this sorted?.
Thanks,

Hello,

I need to ask for your advice here. I have browsed this forum but none of it helped so far.

I am running two operation systems on my Macbook via boot camp. Original MacOSX and Win7 32.

I am using my school internet via LAN in the campus where I live.

When I do the speed test in macosx, it shows around 7-10 MBit/s but when I do the same test on my Windows, it never shows more than 0,7 Mbit/s. Upload speed is the same under both systems.

I tried to reinstall Windows, use different drivers (windows one, the original one from apple bootcamp and the updated one from new bootcamp) for my nforce LAN card but none of it helped. I also tried to switch off firewall but that was not the issue. I found a couple of things with registry and settings here but as I say, still the same.

I don't want to get rid of this system, but I have no more ideas of what to try. Please if you know about anything that might help, I would appreciate your advice.

Thanks

I just got a new Lenovo Ideapad y500 a few days ago, and the internet speed has been incredibly slow from the get-go. Loading images on pages takes way longer than it should, I can't watch streaming videos that last 4 minutes without it pausing to buffer every 5-10 seconds. It took about 20 minutes to download a 50mb file. My 4 year old laptop loads everything way faster, especially when downloading files. I did a ping test on both and everything was about the same, except I got a download speed of .75 mb/s on the new laptop, and between 12-17 mb/s on the old laptop. My new laptop is up to date with the wireless drivers and I'm not sure what else to try to do to fix it.

Here are the speeds of the new laptop from speedtest.net
Ping: 25 ms
Download speed: .75 mbps
Upload speed: 4.10 mpbs

Edit: my wireless card is Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230 and the router is linksys wrt150n wireless-n

I've looked at all the solutions here and elsewhere for a solution to my problem, I've tried everything, disabled addons, deleted browsers and reinstalled, no proxy, starting in safe mode etc. My most recent speed is fast, 32.4 down, latency 20ms, but ALL my browsers take forever to load pages. Some take 10 seconds or more. Status bar says "waiting for..." or "transferring from..." I'm using wireless.

If I stop and reload, the pages will load quickly. I have used other WIFI besides mine and the problem is the same, so it's not a router issue. I also used an external usb wifi adapter and that didn't make a difference. Right now I'm at a friend's place and it's the same issue and I'm sitting about 5 feet away from the router.

Toshiba laptop: 1.7 MHZ, 4 GB RAM, WIndows 8/64bit.

It's driving me nuts.

Any ideas?

Hi.

I have this very annoying problem and I'm really out of hopes. I don't know what to do anymore. I'll make a summary of the problem and will be as concise as possible

So I have this Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop with a broadband connection (direct cable, no router) and 3 weeks ago I reinstalled my Windows. Everything went well until 2 weeks ago when the internet speed went down, dial-up like. Pages won't load, and if they do they load just partially. I called my ISP and they said they had no problem. I couldn't find any solution so I thought maybe, some sort of virus or spyware is doing this so I formated the whole hard-disk and did a clean install of Windows.

Unfortunatelly nothing changed, the download speed is the same. Here is a speedtest.net evaluation:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2276053238.png

Drivers are up to date, no windows firewall, no antivirus and no windows update. The ISP support guy told me to deactivate IPv4 and IPv6 from Local Area Connection, but nothing changed. I did a TCP/IP reset which raised my down speed to almost 1 Mb, but after a few minutes it went back to "dial-up". With the down speed being the same, Speedtest sometimes shows me upload speed in between 50-70 Mb which is unbelievable (I will make a ss next time I see this).

And the very weird thing is that I have another netbook (pretty weak config, Intel Atom CPU, 2 GB RAM) and with the same cable it has normal speed (the kind of speed I had on this Dell too). An... Read more

Hi guys. I hope you can help on this issue I've been having with my internet connection, I don't know what to do...

I resently formatted my harddrive because my internet all of a sudden started being very slow but after the format it's still the same issue. Now I've tried plugging the connection line into my laptop and there there's no problem.

I am gettin' a slower download than upload...

I have a 10mb download/1 upload speed LAN connection. I ran a speed test on the same connection and on my stationary it shows like 250 kbs download and like 750 kbs upload, while on my laptop it shows like 8 Mbs download and 750 kbs upload... so what's the problem?

So far I've found out that it has nothing to do with the internet connection line or my NIC (I tried a brand new one and it was the same issue), it's not spyware or malware, it's not fragmented and under internet connections it says that I'm connected on a 100 Mb network card and there are no problems with any of the devices?

However I can see that if I open the job list, the download connection is very unstable going from up to 750 kb for a breif moment then falls to a halt at 0 kb... and moreover it says that I'm not using any percent of the network?

I'm on windows 7 and haven't had any problems before this, the rest of the system works just fine, but not the internet. If I try and download something it won't get higher than like 50 kb and then may... Read more

the normal value for DSL is 1492, and 1460 is INVALID = = must be a multiple of 8.

Hello everybody this is my first post ever on this forum. Few days ago my laptop download speed dropped horribly, it used to be 20~30 mbps for download and similar for upload, however now it's...

This on wifi, and this is when i connect it with cabel to router

And why I'm writing here and not at my router manufactor or ISP forums? Well because I think this is laptop's fault because of few reasons:
- this is speed of my other PC connected to that same router

- This is speed of my phone which is connected to same Wifi

Tried restoring my windows to when there was no problems with internet - no help.

One additional thing - for some reasons after i restored my laptop at first minutes internet was good at it was before, but soon after few minutes it slowed back down to these few mbps.

There shouldn't be no wifi hijacking, because with my routers admin page (Router is Netgear wnr2000v3) I can see all the devices attached to it.

Hello All-

I've tried researching this on the web but can't seem to find anything that matches my situation. I recently switched from DSL to Cable internet service. I have a desktop and a laptop in the house. The desktop is connected directly to the router and is working very well - much faster than the DSL in both download and upload speed. The laptop is wireless and is now MUCH slower than the previous DSL connection. The funny thing is, the upload speeds on the laptop are consistently just as fast as the desktop. Here are my results from speedtest.net:

Desktop (Connected Directly Through Router):
Donwload: 24373 kb/s
Upload: 1537 kb/s

Laptop (Wireless):
Download: 323 kb/s
Upload: 1420 kb/s

Why would my wireless Upload speed be 4.5x FASTER than my Download speed? I was getting about 5x faster with DSL.

If it helps diagnose, the laptop is using Windows Vista with a Dell 1505 Draft 802.11n built-in wireless card. The router is a Linksys WRT160N. I've seen a wireless connection speed ranging anywhere from 13.0 to 130.0.

I've also considered that I have a 2.4 GHZ cordless phone in the house which could cause some interference. I've disconnected and unplugged that phone and replaced it with a corded phone and that didn't make any difference.

My signal strength is excellent on the laptop even when I'm on the main floor of the house (the router is upstairs).

Do I need to adjust my router settings somehow? I have a WPA2 security with what ... Read more

Hello! My laptop's been getting ridiculously slow wireless download speeds (around .5 Mbps) for the past week or so. All other devices work fine and get around 15 Mbps, even when they're in the same location as my laptop. Wired connection also works fine; I connected my laptop to an ethernet cable and was getting 15 Mbps. As well as this, the upload speed is the same as the other devices - about 4 Mbps. I've done a virus scan, made sure no background programs are running, checked that my drivers are up to date, and nothing has worked. However, I've made a few observations:
Resetting the router will solve the problem for about ten minutes, until I start to lose speed again. As I said before, this only happens on my laptop. All other devices function normally when I reset the router.
When I look at my internet connections, my laptop is frequently "identifying" the internet. Now, this isn't happening all the time, and the internet is still slow regardless of whether it's currently identifying, but it happens pretty often and doesn't seem normal.
Has anybody experienced this before or have any suggestions for fixing it? I can provide more information if needed. Thanks.

Hi,I have just bought new hp notebook 17-x014nm (i3). It was free dos so I installed win7 64bit. Friend of mine (since I'm an amateur) installed bunch of drivers and it all seemed ok (except problems with spontaneous changing display graphics, I was told because it has AMD & Intel graphics, or something like that... but he fixed it)Now I see that wifi connection is extremely slow - when I try to download it's 70/80 kbps, although signal quality is excellent and speed is reported 48 Mbps. I tried it on other network, it's the same. And this new laptop (8GB RAM, 256 SSD...) is supposed to be much better then the old one, but the old one was much faster. Could it be something with wifi driver? Or any other idea how to fix this, please?

Last week I have purchased a WD 2TB Green Drive as well as a non-raid capable raid card Rosewill RC-212; since my older PC (WinXP32, Celeron D, 1GB RAM) does not have SATA ports. I have installed fresh drivers form Rosewills? website even though they are not needed for non-raid configurations. The PC recognized the card right away as well as the HDD. The write speeds are as expected, however the read speeds are between 300KB and 2500KB. I cannot figure out why the read speeds do not exceed 2.5MB? I have plugged the HDD as an external drive via USB and the read/write speeds are as expected. Anyone knows why and how to fix it?

Update:
I have tried 1TB WD green drive (1.5-year old) and it works as expected.

Update 2:
I have just spoken with Rosewill tech and he said that using PCI card and such a large drive it is expected to be slow. Personally I believe it is B.S. You?

P.S. for moderators: I have similar thread under storage and networking, but it no longer applies as such issue. Please delete it.

The Rosewill card's transfer rate is "up to 1.5GB/s." The WD hard drive's is 3.0Gb/s. Perhaps if you set the jumper on the 5-6 pins to activate the 1.5GB/s rate per this instruction: Western Digital.

I apologise if this isn't the right place to ask this.

I connected up to broadband last night (SpeedTouch 330 modem).

I'm baffled by something though.

I've downloaded several files - including a movie clip and two game demos. Each of them downloaded at around 100 kb/s (Have I written that right ?).

I then went to download a couple more files and they started downloading okay, but the weird thing is tha they download at the old dial-up speed (around 5 kb/s).

This was tried both with a download manager (my usual way), and without, but it happened the same with each.

I went back and tried the other files that had downloaded at FAST broadband speeds and they still did that (FAST), so it's not anything wrong with my PC or Broadband stuff (I believe).

Is it possible that some downloads just WON'T DOWNLOAD AT FASTER THAN DIAl-UP SPEEDS ? I've never heard of this happening.

This is one that downloads fast ; A game demo

This is one of the ones that only reaches dial-up speed on download ; A file containing text adventures

Thanks, and sorry if I'm asking in the wrong place - again.

I have un-installed and re-installed my Linksys E1200 wireless N300 router several times, and can only achieve about .5 MBPS d/l and ~6.0 MBPS u/l data speeds, on a 3 year old HP laptop, running Windows 7. This is wireless service, and the laptop is within 4 feet of the router. I have Comcast service on my desktop, and my "connected" normal d/l speed is ~30 MBPS, with ~5 MBPS u/l. Don't know what else to do. I have connected the laptop directly to the modem, and get 30 MBPS speed, so there is something I'm missing in the wireless router setup.

Hello there,

We have a WRT300N Linksys router (updated firmware) with 2 very recent laptops (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T9600 2.8GHz 3GB RAM 32-bit running Windows 7 - fully updated) connected to our wireless network.

Last week, everything was fine.

Two days ago, the internet connection for my laptop became intermittently VERY slow.
The internet service we have is for 30 mbps. I did a speed test but didn't have enough "juice" to finish the test. Even if I load google.com, the page would time out or say that the server is down. Downloading of email is also intermittently VERY slow. I am unable to play any online games as my connection is not fast enough...

The other laptop works perfectly fine.

I scanned for viruses using Avira, for malware using MalwareBytes and ran diagnostic tests for my wireless card. All seems fine. I called my ISP and they said that all is fine on their side.

We tried unplugging the router/modem and rebooting the computer - no change.
I downloaded Xirrus WiFi Monitor and have enclosed the screenshot as well as my IP config /all.

In my device manager I have the following under Network Adapters (all updated):
1) Intel 82567LF Gigabit Network Connection
2) Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN
3) Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

My friend says it could be because of Second Life and all the java plugins it requires I could have a problem.

What could this be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Troubleshooting steps I have already taken: Tried different router, tried different cables, changed NIC card, disabled QoS packet scheduler, moved computer to different location entirely (friends internet tested at 16mbps on speedtest.net, download speeds were around 600kbps, all other computers in the house were downloading at acceptable speeds), updated drivers

I just built my first pc, but my internet isn't working properly.

I have a fast internet connection, see speed test above. But I can't download any files via browsers. They start to download and immediately go down to 0 kb/s.

My network is AC 17050 Wireless Dual Band - Drivers are installed and updated. I downloaded the driver from their website after installing the driver from the cd and windows says it's up-to-date.

network card is installed into mb correctly,

I have a strong signal with 144mbps

I have tried everything, nothing seems to work. Can't connect pc to router with wire but shouldn't need to as i'm only in the next room

Welcome to the forum. Is your router set to AC not just n type? You wont get ipv6 as its not generally used so you can disable that with ac you should get 3 gig connection are you using 2 or 5 gigs connection?

A:CPU fan speed, better fast or slow?

For one thing, your computer tends to be a little louder when your fan is running full out. As long as your cpu is running at normal specs, I would let it run using the bios or a third party application to control it.

For the benefit of anyone struggling with slow wireless speeds on a Lenovo laptop with the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 wireless card, here's what worked for me. (tl;dr: disable WMM/QoS on your router) So I just purchased a new IdeaPad 510S-14ISK.  From the start, the wireless seemed slow, but I planned to remove Windows 10 and install 7, so I didn?t pay too much attention.  After a clean install of Windows 7, the wireless was still very slow.  Running speedtest.net I found 1-2 Mbps down and 30+ up.  Other laptops in the house (Dell and Asus) get as high as 45 down and 45 up.  (I have Verizon 50/50.)  On Ethernet, the IdeaPad gets the same speed as anything else, so this was specifically a wireless issue. I spent a lot of time reading different solutions and trying some random things: Removing and reinstalling the wifi driverLogging into safe mode with networkingDisabling b/g support on the routerUsing an optimization tool from VerizonEtc? Nothing made any difference. Finally I found a couple of articles: http://www.ybrikman.com/writing/2012/02/19/got-slow-download-but-fast-upload/ (where I stole the tl;dr summary) http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2753464/atheros-qualcomm-qca9377-802-compatibility-issues.h... As soon as I disabled the WMM/QoS on my FIOS router speeds on the IdeaPad jumped up to 30+/30+.  Amazing difference and performance is perfect.  I think this problem is... Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months.

The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

My wife has a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop running Windows 7 Professional, 64 Bit, 3.00 GB Memory with Intel 2.16 GHz.
Our ISP provider installed a new Router about four months ago and tested up and down speeds before they left.
Downloads were in the high 20s Mbps and uploads in the 5s Mbps.
I began to notice a couple of weeks ago that Internet access with either IE or Chrome seemed kind of slow. I ran speedof.me and the best download speed is 12 Mbps but usually around 7 Mbps but the upload speeds are still around 5 Mbps.
I have an iPhone, a Kindle Fire and a Toshiba laptop and have run speedof.me on them, (right next to the Dell laptop) and the speeds on all three are fine.
We use Norton Security and I ran the Power Eraser with nothing found. Ran Malware Bytes and nothing of concern showed up. Updated the wifi card driver from Dell as well as the driver for the Marvell Yukon Internet controller.
No Joy. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have for me to try to speed her laptop.
I thank you in advance.

I've been having this problem for 3 days now. I have a 5Mbps downstream 768kbps upstream dsl connection and noticed that webpages were opening noticeably slower and streaming video took ages to load. All speed tests I run show that I get around 300-400 kbps downstream even though my upstream is normal at around 600 kbps.
I know it is not my computer or browser since I've tried the tests on other computers in my house. I contacted my isp and they tested my phone line and said it was ok. They even changed the modem but it didn't help. I tried to connect using my isp's modem with router functionality and also as a bridge with my own router but I get the same results. The problem started happening overnight without any changes to any configuration in my home computers or the network. Today I noticed that I get much higher speeds (almost full bandwidth) when downloading torrents but as I said videos take forever to load and all speedtests show a very low downstream speed.
Anybody know what could be causing this? I suspect that it is a problem with my isp (perhaps with port 80?) but they say that everything shows up as normal on their side.

A:Torrents fast speed tests slow

DSL has issues with speed. I use to have 1.5mbps, then 3mbps and 5mbps. I even bypass the way DSL works in the home. You can do the same but take some time to do. Most you can get out of that is a much stronger signal. You tap into the main phone line that comes in like through a basement before it hits the phone. I use CAT5e with a phone jack box ran that to another phone jack box with a modular connector. That connector would use ultra phone line cable based on Cat 5e but for phone data. That would go to your DSL modem. It worked well. Now that I am cable modem I'll never go back to DSL.

Okay so i know this most likely isn't my internet provide. i have high speed internet from charter(i know they are not the best but more on that later) with actually download speeds tested online around 10-13mbps on average. i keep my computer pretty clean, running smart defrag, cleaning the disk, anti virus, only have programs running in the background that are needed, have increased my virtual memory and also use readyboost with a 4 gb flashdrive that i allow to use all the flashdrive memory as "ram" memory. so i think this has be something below the surface and that i cannot handle on my own. i do not think it is my internet provider because i have to roommates that have computers(mac... :/) and they have no problem usually with the internet. when i say usually i mean they have problems sometimes maybe 3-4 times weekly where i have problems at least 2-3 times a day. if you need any other information i willing to provide it or run diagnostics as long as you tell me how. please help me, i am not a computer idiot. i have a decent understanding and could really use some good help. thanks!

To be honest, unless your computer is running very badly it will not have a dramatic effect on the speed of your net connection. With having other people connected to the same internet connection the only way to run accurate speed tests is to ensure they aren't using the connection at the same time for any downloads etc....

I used to have DSLExtreme 18 Mbps, using Speedtest.net on ethernet I would get a steady 15-16 Mbps down, wifi was steadily 14-16 as well. I recently switched to Charter Spectrum 200 Mbps, and now I get 40-80 on ethernet and 11-18 on wifi.

All my computers are pretty old, all run Windows XP, I have a Dell Dimension e510 with a Pentium 4 & 1 GB RAM, Dell Inspiron b130 laptop with a Celeron M & 1 GB, Dell Latitude x600 with a Pentium M & 632 MB RAM, And and IBM Thinkpad t40 with a Pentium M & 1 GB.

Now I know that's slow by today's standards, I've heard many people say you can't even run XP with 1 GB. But I can play many games on the highest settings smoothly with the Dimension e510. I do a lot of 3D graphics stuff on it as well. It's quite powerful for it's age. I have a bit of a hard time believing that it can't handle a 200 Mbps connection.

The laptops are all connected by wifi except for the b130. I tried the Thinkpad on ethernet as well, and I get similar speeds on all of them for ethernet and wifi. I run a speed test once and get 86 Mbps on ethernet, run it immediately again and get 30 Mbps. Upload ranges from .90 to 12 Mbps. Wifi gets 11 down once, 18 down the next, .90 up the next, 11 up the next.
It also seems to run better when I have all of my devices connected and in use at once than it does with nothing connected but a PC directly to the modem or router.

I also randomly get socket errors for both download and up... Read more

Could someone please help me?

My ISP is Videotron (I live in Quebec), and I have a D-LINK DIR-615 Wireless N. My internet connection is just over 10 megabits per second, averaging a download speed of 1150 kilobytes per second, which remains unchanged, (multiple speed tests, downloads and torrents).

About a month ago, when watching videos on YouTube, they started streaming at extremely low speeds, making videos that used to finished streaming in seconds completely unwatchable.

I have restarted my router, modem, Anti-Virus (with firewall - Kaspersky Internet Security 2010) and computer several times and it didn't help. The only thing that did help was plugging my computer directly into the modem, which returned the speeds to normal.

However, I have 3 friends, all of which have Videotron, but not D-LINK routers, experiencing the same problem. Videotron does not throttle, and I have not changed computers, routers, modems, operating systems, virus protection software or internet browser since long before the problem began.

Please help, I feel like I have a dial-up connection.

Recently moved house and had installed my internet today, the exact same setup.

Right now the only difference with this setup is that the router is plugged into my laptop, and if anything, it's closer to my computer than it was in the previous house.

My problem is that it randomly goes slow for short periods of time, or in games it lags like crazy. For example while watching youtube it'll shoot up the loading bar fast and then all of a sudden stop, and go really slowly, then back into fast speed over and over.

What can I do to resolve this?

A:Slow speed, fast speed, slow speed.

Go to speedtest.net and see what your download and upload speeds are. Watching a youtube video will use less bandwidth than a game would.

You could also do a tracert to google.com to see if there are any high response times.

I have two HP Minis (2102 & 110-1025DX) that are both slow browsing the internet, but have very fast internet connection speeds. I have done all the "performance tips" possible I believe:Upgraded RAM to 2GB on both devices,Upgraded wireless adapters to "N" cards,Upgraded HDDs to 7200RPM,Adjusted Windows Advanced Settings to "Best Performance",Ensured all drivers are latest,Use Google Chrome, all extensions removed, "hardware eacceleration disabled, latest revision checked, cache cleared, etc. Microsoft Edge is even slower,Internet speeds (per Speedtest.net) average about 25-32Mbps download, 12Mbps uploadRun browser with no other open programs/apps,Tested processors (Intel Atoms) with Intel Diagnostic Tool, all "PASS",So I've been at a loss why web browsing is so slow. Some "simpler" web pages load okay (2-5 seconds) while a more graphic intense sight like the nfl site or YouTube takes 20-30 seconds to load. Sometimes even more. Even trying to scroll down a page causes buffering to start, and the wait can be the same 20-30 seconds or more. Is it that these Intel Atom processors simply can't handle the "work"? Perhaps the graphics can't handle the web pages? I do notice that the CPUs will max out at 99% when opening Chrome. But even when CPU settles down to less than 10%, web browsing is still very slow.I have other devices with (seemingly) lesser hardware, and they work fine. Ok, a little weird replying to my own question, but I think I found something that may help others with this issue. I went into Device Manager>Network Adapters>"wireless" (depending upon your adapter)>Properties, then into Advanced using the Advanced tab.My Receive and Transmission Buffer settings were at "256"; I changed them to 512 (max allowed), clicked "OK". I also changed the "AdHoc Mode" to 11n from 11b. I then restarted the Mini 2102. I noticed an immediate web browsing speed increase. I would not call it blazing, but pretty close to what would be "normal" browsing speeds. The "Buffer" settings regulate and limit how much memory the network adapter can use. I noticed a jump in memory usage for Google Chrome, but the overall usage was at max about 60% of the 2GB installed. So far this has been the most dramatic performance increase for web browsing. Even more so  than upgrading the wireless card from "g" to "n:I hope this may help someone else with this issue. Let me know if it does help.

I installed Comodo's Firewall and during installation I accepted to install the Secure DNS too. Afterward I noticed my web-pages loaded slower than usual. They weren't extremely slow but definitely slower than what I've been accustomed. I tried some OPENDNS servers and others to see if it made any difference but it didn't. I also went to my router's setup page((http://192.168.1.1/)so I could manually add the previously mentioned DNS servers. I finally decided to revert back to my old DNS list. To disable using the Comodo DNS servers I did the following:

Wireless Network Connection Properties-> Internet Protocol Ver 4 (TCP/IPv4)-> Properties -> Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically"

I also went into to my router's setup page (http://192.168.1.1/) to set my DNS list to zeros so that I can get back my default ISP's DNS servers (207.69.188.185,186,187). However, website loading is still sluggish.

I thought the issue might just be a temporary hiccup from my ISP but my roommate doesn't have these issues. We tried a speed test at dslreports.com and the results were weird. On my laptop the results were 8500+ Kb/s with a 279ms latency. I was 10 ft away from my router. His results were 3000+Kb/s with a 11ms latency and he was 30 ft away from the router. Is the latency a major issue?

Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you.

First to get you up to speed.

I purchased cable broadband 3 days ago after being without internet for 2 months. It's a 25/2.5 Mbps connection and we have two laptops that are working on it wirelessly, without issue.
The desktop I'm typing this on has reasonable latency and download speed (30-50 ms, 14-21 Mb's down), but it's uploading incredibly slowly. So slowly that I can't even get an online speedtest to read it.
Speedtest.net, Shaw.speedtest.ca, and dslreports tell me that my latency and down speed are all consistent, but none of them can tell me my upload speed. They all just continue loading endlessly or spit
out an error.

Yesterday I was able to get utorrent to read my upload speed (12 kilobytes/s it said). But after reformatting and re-installing Windows 7 in an attempt to fix the issue, Utorrent now just tells me it has timed
out when I try to use it to diagnose my connection speed. When I attempt to play WoW, it tells me that my local latency is fine, but the server latency jumps rapidly until I'm finally disconnected. Even if
I'm not disconnected it's still mostly unplayable.

The web is surfable, but webpages can often take awhile to load. Once I'm able to navigate to a video though, I can stream it at 1080p without issue. I can torrent and download files very quickly as well.

I spent 40 minutes on the phone with a service representative and feel fairly certain that the problem is not on their end, or with the modem... Read more
