Can the "now playing" list be retrieved if a file is accedentally opened, losing list

Q: Can the "now playing" list be retrieved if a file is accedentally opened, losing list

I have accidentally clicked on an associated Windows Media Player file, so many times, destroying the list of songs on the "now playing" list? How do I go back to the previous playlist (unsaved) if I accidentally select a WMP file? How many playlists does it go back?

Actually I found a way to step back, but I can't seem to find it consistently. How do I do it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For some reason the icons are missing on some programs in the "recently opened programs" list.

Ive tried right click start menu and uncheck->check under privacy.

If i create a shortcut to the program on the desktop, the icon reappears in the start menu.

Any ideas?

Hello Cixoos, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if changing the icon for it to the default icon again a couple of times will allow it to display again.

You might also rebuild the icon cache to see if it can reset it to.

I have about 40 titles that will not go away in my "now playing" list. I can erase the list, but if I pick any song from my library that was on that list, the entire list reappears, replacing the songs I have chosen, and mediaplayer starts playing all the songs (from this persistent list) from that title on. Save the now playing list as a playlist first by clicking the drop down arrow and 'save playlist as', choose 'M3u' in the save as type drop down box.

Place a shortcut to the drive (or folder) you want to be the target in c:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\SendTo folder. That is the directory from which the Send To menu is loaded. I'm trying to run KM Player 3.1.0.0_R2 in portable mode (no install) in Vista x64 and save preferences in KMPCfg.ini. Just extracting the KMP installer files to a folder allows it to play files just fine, if open them from KMP UI.

I want to open files from Explorer folders, by R clicking & selecting "Open With." Without installing KMP, of course it's not on the list of programs. NOR will it PUT KMP on the list if I browse to it's folder & the .exe file (even if check, "Always use this program to open this kind of file." I suppose the reason KMP doesn't show up in the "Open With" list (and won't let me add it) is because necessary registry entries weren't created by installing it.

Same thing happened when I tried associating a file type w/ KMP (like .wmv), through Control Panel. It wouldn't change the association when I browsed to the executable.

I used the utility OpenWithAdd utility to supposedly register KMP to show up in the Open With list. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/openwithadd.htm
It actually added a KMP registry entry for .WMV files in
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-350893743-1272961675-1415102724-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.wmv\OpenWithProgids\\KMPlayer.wmv. It looks exactly like the other media player entries under this key.
But, I guess it still doesn't show up on the Open With list because there aren't any other registry entries w/ KMP'... Read more

Well, no gurus? Maybe can add a portable app to "open with" context (dunno), but you can add it to the "Send To" context, then use that when R click files in explorer.

Copy or drag icon you want to the user's Send To folder under the user's acct. It'll be there when you want to send select files to the app.

I use OpenOffice version 3.4.1 on Windows 8 and recently my recent items list was cleared unexpectedly. I am concerned about this because I have sensitive information saved in OpenOffice documents and I am worried that someone accessed my computer without my knowledge, accessed one of these documents, and then cleared my recent items list. I've used OpenOffice for many years and don't remember ever seeing this list cleared, at least not without my knowledge. I haven't repaired the install, changed login accounts, or changed user settings in the AppData folder.

I tried setting Windows Explorer to show "date accessed" for my files, but it doesn't update. I accessed a file today and Windows says that it was last accessed in 2013. Apparently that setting is enabled by default in Windows 7, but in Windows 8 you have to change a registry value to enable it. I'm gonna assume changing it after the fact is irrelevant. Does anyone else know any other options for determining if certain files have recently been accessed?

A:OpenOffice "recent items list" deleted. Security issue?

If it was cleared, there is not much, you can do it about it.
Try RecentFilesView - View the list of recently opened files

Check events log, if the computer was accessed, when you were not there.
Start - Run - eventvwr or something simpler like LastActivityView

For the record, you should encrypt sensitive files, like with AxCrypt

I just did a clean install of Vista on my Thinkpad T42 last week. I am now noticing problems with permissions -- many folders in my Documents folder show up as "read-only", and I'm having trouble accessing and modifying a lot of my own documents. If I look at the properties of a folder, it says "read-only"; I go to the "security" tab to give myself full control over the folder by checking off the top box, but when I hit "apply" it repeatedly tells me things like:
An error occurred while applying security information to
C:\Users\rex\Documents\Other\fb.rb
The access control list (ACL) structure is invalid.Click to expand...

I've also tried unchecking "read-only" in the folder properties and hitting "ok", but after I log in again, it goes back to "read-only".

One idea I've had is that this could be related to my using the Windows Backup Utility to back-up my data from XP before I did my clean install. Maybe something about the file permissions was stored in the .bkf file, and conflicted with something on my Vista system? Just a guess; I didn't find too much that directly related to this on Google. I tried creating a new profile in Vista and moving all the folders over there and trying the same things, but this didn't solve the problems.

Any ideas? You guys seem to really know your stuff.

Hi, Everyone:This is a long one, but please read on...this sit is really odd. I'm also not an adv'd user, so I hope I can make myself understood.

Both IE and MSN browsers are acting funny. I believe the root problem lies in IE, since MSN browsers feed off of its settings. In an attempt to use a process of elimination, I tried to run a "repair" on IE. However, when I went to Add/Remove Programs, Internet Explorer is not on the list; thus, a repair option is not available. I have a zipped file sitting on my desktop ready for installation. I tried to run the newly downloaded file, but it picks up a "newer" version and refuses to finish installing.

The MSN tech group and Verizon have been unsuccessful in troubleshooting this. Both parties walked me through similar steps: deleting cache, temp files, offline web pages and history; and adjusting internet options and reseting defaults.

This is what the browsers do or fail to do: both browsers open to my set home pages just fine. The problem begins when I ask for a new window (by right clicking and making the selection) or click on a link that is programmed to open in its own window. The second window won't load. There are two types of windows that open. The first is the type that opens in its own window and mirrors the browser. The second one is the type that doesn't: it does not have drop down menus or buttons. The only options available are to minimize, restore, and exit.

Every picture I've saved from the Internet and every picture I've saved from my digital camera appears in the list of background pictures that can be chosen from the "Desktop" tab in Display Properties. MOST of these pictures would be inappropriate as desktop wallpaper so I'd rather not have them as choices in the list (menu). In addition, there are hundreds of them! I don't want to delete them from "My Pictures" however. Thanks.

I would like to remove certain selections from the "Add or Remove Programs" list in Windows XP. Certain things are actually uninstalled, but I can't remove their selection. Other items can't find their "install.log" file but I just want them to be removed from the list anyway. I used to use TweakUI by Microsoft on my old Win98 computer, but I can't find the option to do it on my XP computer.

Anybody know how to do this if it can be done?

Well I was going to just post a screen shot which would save the trouble of a lengthy explanation like this one, unfortunately the steps I'd have to take just to be able to post one measly pic are even more time-consuming, so here goes.

To first obey the posting rules:
I have Windows Vista, 64-bit, I believe it's not SP1 (I looked in "system" and it doesn't indicate, and I can't recall if I've allowed SP1 on this computer. Don't worry, which SP I have is irrelevant to my problem.)

So hear it is:
-Right click on ANY image file on this very screen you're looking at. Say, one of the smilies, for instance.
-Select "Save Image As..."
- In the bar at the top that traditionally shows the file path, to the very right end of that field is that small downward arrow; click on that.
- A drop-down list appears of folders- and even a few websites?- where I have recently saved image files.

Question: How do I erase these files from the list?! As in, PRIVACY. I do not want Windows to save recent anythings, of this sort.

Note that I already tried right-clicking on the Start Button, selecting "properties", and under the "start menu" tab there is a box for some OTHER privacy settings w.r.t. recently opened sweet nothings. Not relevant to my problem.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Keep up the good work here!

Hi there.
Tahnks for the forum. This is my first post, and I am really hoping that someone can assist me. I recently had major problems with XP, and had to format the hd that it is on and reinstall it. It is again giving me issues. Now I am unable to open any MS Office application. I get an error message telling me that it failed to initialize. I believe that my system is up to date windows wise. I thought I would remove Office, and reinstall it. When I opened Control Panel, add remove programs, it would not generate a list of programs that I can remove. It just seems to hang.
I am using Spydoctor, Adaware & Spybot. Have latest antivirus updates, & use a firewall.
Could it be an infection?
I have included the following HJKT log.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

hi. how do i add the button "add to windows media player list" to the windows explorer toolbar please? i would like it to work when a folder full of tunes is highlighted as well as when individual tunes are highlighted. it would be quite nice if the "play" button works when a folder is highlighted as well. thanks, Alex

A:add button to toolbar "add to windows media player list"

Welcome to Seven Forums acm0000. I am unaware of a way to add those specific buttons. You can however left click and highlight multiple files, then right click the selections and both add to windows media player list and play will be choices. A Guy

My wife's computer has acted up and I want to protect some of her misc. items like an extensive "favorites" list of web links to her genealogy studies. I would appreciate any help.

My goal is to either place the information onto a thumb drive or back it up onto an external hard drive, both of which are readily available.

Thank you.

Hi guys- October is coming soon - and as I just did a quick search here in the forum, there does not seem to be a compiled list of suggested tweaks after a fresh install. For instance I just read about tweaking the Aero Peek speed from 400ms to 40. It was a new one to me, but something like that might be handy. WHich got me wondering what else might be....

SO what I'd like to see is your suggestions and instructions for tweaks after you do a clean install (like many of us will do come October). Some folk with BuKu RAM may disable the page file, add certain screen savers from certain sites or add specific tools and gadgets... What are you planning to do with YOUR next clean install?

A:Time to start "Fresh Install" tweaks list!

One of the first things I do is disable UAC .

Them goes system restore etc and unwanted services.

See attached image.

In Vista, with a list view, my 1050px tall display can list 52 items vertically. In 7 it is reduced to 44, because of apparently a larger font and larger gaps in between items. All my settings are default in both cases.

This is nearly a 20% decrease in usable space. Why???

A:Explorer "list view" wastes space in 7 vs Vista

This is a problem why? To me the version in Windows 7 is a lot more pleasant to look at and read. Having whitespace and separation is not a bad thing.

As the title suggests, every time I open "turn windows features on or off" the box stays blank no matter how long I wait. I have tried several things and have searched for quite a long time for solutions, but to no avail. The things i've tried include; everything in the following - FIX Blank or Empty List in Vista Turn Windows Features On or Off (OptionalFeatures.exe), sfc /scannow, reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty, and making sure Windows Modules Installer is running and set to manual. I'd appreciate any help and suggestions, thanks!

I don't normally start threads like this. Not all product manufacturers are created equal and some are notably better than others. But what bothers me is when a company makes a very decent product and then in a covert manner, cripples it as a means to gouge/fleece the consumer. I contacted HP about this issue and was politely told "thank you, we'll take it under advisement" and that was it. Based on what I've read thus far, I'm confident I will not see any actions taken on the issue I raised.
So, with that out of the way I'll get right to the point:

Hewlett-Packard has been putting a "white list" in their computers (in the BIOS). They started this sometime in 2010. What is it? It's a list of "acceptable hardware" that may be installed in the computer. The most common internally installed piece of hardware is the network card. While many laptop motherboards have the graphics card (GPU) soldered directly in place, the network (WiFi) card is an optionally installed device that goes in an internal PCIe slot.

The devious thing that HP did was that if you go out and buy a newer/better WiFi card and install it, upon cold booting the computer will check to see if that WiFi card is in the "white list". If it isn't, the computer WILL NOT BOOT.

Now, HP claims they did this in the "best interests of the consumer", because they supposedly test the best WiFi cards of the day and put those in the white list. However, networkin... Read more

A:Beware the dreaded "white list" -- HP is guilty as charged

I've already been boycotting all HP products for several years now because of their poor customer service and their policy of abandoning older products, etc. Up until this, their latest outrage had been the smug announcement that their newest machines that came with Win 8 installed would not be backwards compatible with Win 7 because they had no plans to make drivers for it. They pulled a similar stunt when Vista came out and the refused to update the drivers for many of their older printers.

When I flag an item (i.e. email) for follow-up, it shows up twice in my to do list. I've figured out that this is because I have two .pst files in Outlook (outlook.pst and archive.pst). When I remove the archive.pst from the profile, only one flagged item shows.

I suspect this is the result of an Outlook auto-archive setting, but I'm not sure. If anyone knows, I'd be interested to know how to avoid this going forward?

Also, is there any way I can keep archive.pst as part of my Outlook profile and not have duplicate flagged items show up in my to do list, or do I need at this point to just take it off the profile and open it when I need to look up old items?
