Preferred Solution: Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver for 7720 inspiron 17r special edition

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi Logan,
I apologize for the inconvenience caused. The driver for USB 3.0 is not available as Windows 8 includes native support for USB 3.0.I will recommend you to re-install chipset drivers:

Click on 'Start ‘and right click on 'My Computer'.
Click on 'Manage' and click on 'Device Manager'.
Expand 'Universal Bus Controller' and right click on each entry named as 'USB Root Hub' and click on 'uninstall'.
Once done, restart the system and install Chipset drivers from both the links:

INTEL Intel Management Engine Interface: http://dell.to/XfgiE3Dell Intel HM77 Chipset: http://dell.to/XtphhaCard reader: http://dell.to/VLDhsw
Steps to install a driver:

Click on 'Download File'.
Select 'Single-file download' and click on 'Continue'.
Click on 'Save' and save the driver on the desktop.
Right click on the driver from the desktop and select 'Run as administrator'.
Install the driver following the on screen instructions.
Restart the system after the installation is done.

Once the chipset drivers are installed, make sure you install all the Windows updates and restart the system.
Update the BIOS in case the issue is not resolved:

Click on the link: http://dell.to/12zxqbA
Click on 'Download Now'.
Select 'Single-file Download' and click on 'Continue'.
Click on 'Run' and follow the on screen instructions.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Solution provided by DELL to a problem I have been unable to resolve on my Lenovo P50 using Lenovo Tools and Drivers. Background Info: I have Windows 7 Ult SP1 Retail on my P50, with two issues.1. MS Paint, Lenovo Battery utility and the Lenovo Network utility would never display a window when opened, just an icon in the taskbar or a splash screen, then absolutely nothing. Mouse would go jittery for about 20-30 seconds. 2. I could not get a USB3.1 external drive dock to work on the USB C port. The external drive dock came with a USB C to USB3.1 cable. Ruled out the dock as an issue. So I uninstalled all Intel drivers, Lenovo utilities and the Graphics drivers to get back to a base Win 7 install and confirmed Paint worked. Reinstalled drivers individually checking system behaviour at each step. I suspect item 1 was resolved by the most recent Lenovo graphics driver bundle. Item 2 is where DELL come to the rescue. The only Win 7 Lenovo USB 3.1 driver (Version will not install on my system manually and fails using any of the Lenovo tools or utilities.http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/au/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-P-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-P... is a dud. It was originally installed during Win7 install using the built in Admin Account before the OOBE. A:[P51] Intel USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller and Hub Driver

I have split your reply off from the Intel USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller and Hub Driver message thread involving the ThinkPad P50 into a separate one for your P51 for visibility.
If I am reading the screenshot correctly, it looks like the digital signature on the device driver for the USB host either cannot be read, is missing, or cannot be verified (which I assume means a connection being made to Microsoft's servers for verification).
It seems very odd to me that Lenovo would ship a ThinkPad P51 preloaded with Windows 10 containing an unsigned device driver.  And, if I am interpreting the screen correctly, the driver is actually written by Microsoft, not Intel (the "(Microsoft)" at the end of the driver's name).
My initial thought is that somehow the operating system install was corrupted during installation by Lenovo.  It must ben extraordinarly rare event, as I think I have seen it perhaps twice in the past twenty years or so, but that is about the only scenario I can think of where one could find a corrupt file in the preloaded operating system.
If this is the case, there's only one solution I can think of, and that's to order the recovery media from Lenovo, wipe the drive, and then perform a clean install of the operating system using the recovery media.  The reason that I suggest doing it this way, as opposed to using the recovery partition, is because I'm concerned that if there's a problem with one pre-load... Hello to everyone,

So, before some time I had Win 8 and everything was fine. After a while I have had installed fresh Win 8.1 system. After that I tried and tried to make USB 3.0 in function but not successful. Trying everything, reinstalling, looking from ASUS website for drivers, but then I agreed with myself that I will wait until Win 10 came out so I had hope that this will solve my problem but it didn't! :-( I also looked on forums, different threads but no luck. I have got ASUS laptop G55VW (ROG series) and on ASUS website there is no drivers for win 10 (except 8 and 9 Series chipset) and yes, it's good to know if someone could help me, my chipset is HM77 Ivy Bridge.

Thank you in advance!

A:Intel« USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver

Try to download the driver directly from www.intel.com If there is no Windows 10 driver, download the Windows 8 driver instead. You may have to run it in Windows 8 compatibility mode. Right-click on the file and select Properties. Go to Compatibility tab and check the box to set compatibility to Windows 8. Also check the Run as Administrator box. Now it should install OK. It is a good idea to also update the chipset drivers (found in the software section of Intel download site).

Intel's site confuses you and it takes some guesswork to find a driver. Both drivers for USB 3.0 and chipset are in Software section, Chipset software. To save you the trouble, here is the direct link for the USB 3.0 driver. Yes, it says it is Windows 7 only because Windows 8 and 10 are supposed to install a driver automatically through Windows Update. So what! Download it and run it in Windows 7 compatibility mode. It should be far better than Windows Update generic USB 3.0 driver.

I was upgrading my Latitude E5530 with Samsung 850 EVO SSD. I have downloaded OS reinstallation image from Dell support page and put it on USB flash stick. I have replaced HDD with SSD and began clean install.
First surprise was error window telling I need CD/DVD with drivers for my hardware. I saw recomendations to give Intel RST driver, it was recognized, but that did not wort, I could not continue installation. At this time USB flash stick was in USB port on the left side of the notebook.
Next I put the stick in the port on the right side of the note, and it worked like a charm, the system was deployed in 6 minutes.
Next it was attempt to install drivers. I have manually installed NIC driver, then Dell Command Update and let it install drivers. That attempt was messed. Particularly, laptop BSOD'ed on  Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver installation. In the next attempt to install same driver I get error it was unable to install.
I have tried once over, and installed drivers manually in prescribed driver installation order. At #3 there is  Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver. When I install it using setup program, laptop gives BSOD. In the next attempt to install same driver I get error it was unable to install. I knew I have to unplug all USB devices and install this driver from the drive, no matter, still BSOD.
In both cases I noticed left side USB port was not working at all, and other worked intermittently, accepting USB s... Read more

I have been tasked with rebuilding a handful of old(ish) Dell E6330 laptops. All with the same hardware specs, 7 series/C216 chipset family. I am losing sleep over this and could really use a fresh perspective.
I am starting from a base Win 7 64 bit OS, provided by Dell. I have been able to update all of the drivers including BIOS except the "Intel 3.0 extensible host controller" whenever i try to install it, it gives me the BSOD just after installation.
When i go into device manager, it shows installed, but none of the usb 3.0 ports work (which is all of them). However, when i hook the laptop up to a docking station, i can get the 2.0 ports to work, so i have a work around.
I noticed that after i get the BSOD, under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in device manager, there is a Unknown Device listed in there. Though there is no yellow exclamation identifying there is something wrong, when i open it, it says "No drivers are installed for this device" when i select update driver it says the best driver software for your device is already installed (Intel R USB 3.0 Root Hub).
Any help is appreciated!

Recently Upgraded: Running Windows 7, 64-bit on MSI Z97 ATX board with Intel Core i7-4790K processor. I installed the drivers from the CD that came with the board from MSI.

My usage is strictly internet, e-mail and office applications. Occasional other usage is to connect additional hard disk via internal SATA and scanning for viruses and malicious programs. I do not overclock or play games.

I am trying to determine whether there is any real benefit to keeping the following:
"Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver". I thought USB3 drivers were already in W7 so why do I need this driver from Intel? I've read this; but, it never gets into whether it is an essential program or what functionality might be lost if I uninstall it.
"MSI Super Charger". I've read this; but, I can't see any real benefit, The only thing I charge from this computer is my phone and I am very well satisfied with its charging time.

I strongly believe the drivers that Lenovo have on its System Update server for the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller for Win 7 32 bit OS for the models of T430s and X230 are the wrong ones or they are corrupted.  Five times now after I have completed my base corporate image the USB 3.0 ports will be working correctly.  If I install the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller drivers from System Update for Win 7 32bit I will get a stop error and after the restart the USB 3.0 ports will stop working.  I have tested this on two X230 laptops and a T430s.  Same results across the board.   I doubt I?m the only one who has reported this issue. Any way Lenovo can confirm is they are seeing the same issue? Thanks

Dell Inspiron 14 3421
Intel i3 processor

I had upgraded my laptop from Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. All the USB ports worked fine for a few days. Then suddenly, the laptop went off while playing the game Thief. (This usually happens when the laptop heats up too much, not a big deal.)

When I turned on the laptop, the two USB 3.0 ports stopped working. There was no power in either of the USB 3.0 ports. I checked this with a mini USB fan.

I went to the device manager and found a yellow triangle before Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller.
When I double clicked on it, in the device status box, it showed "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I thought it was a problem with Windows 10 and degraded the OS to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit and installed and updated all drivers, hoping it would help. But still the same problem exists with the USB 3.0 port.

Please Help!!

A few usb devices won't be recognized and there is a yellow warning symbol in the device manager of Win 7 that there is a driver that was "installed incorrectly". I did some research on the missing driver name and found it on the Intel support site. I downloaded the Win 7 version. I ran it and it claims that my "system does not meet requirements". It's not seeing an old IDE hard drive (500gig) that I have a an external usb connected enclosure for. Very frustrated and I am not sure why Windows 7 isn't playing nice. I even uninstalled the "incorrect" driver that it stuck me with and restarted the system hoping it would possibly reinstall the drive correctly. No dice. I would greatly appreciate some fix for this as I need to get this drive read to move files from it. It is Fat32 and I can't erase it without deleting everything on it. Plus, the drive isn't recognized when I plug in the usb cable. I will post the error messages to shed hopefully some light on this.

I have two Dell Inspiron 17R 7720 laptops. My "old" one I bought direct from Dell in 2012, the "new" one, advertised as an "Inspiron 17R 7720 Special Edition",  I bought on Ebay a couple of weeks ago. I still have the original paperwork for the old one from when I purchased it from Dell and there is no mention of "Special Edition" in the paperwork. Both are identified only as "Inspiron 7720" on the label on the underside of the computer, and there are no "Special Edition" markings or labeling anywhere on the new computer.
Hardware is pretty much identical, 1TB Samsung ST1000LM024HN HDDs, 8 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000/Nvidia GeForce GT 650M Video/3D graphics, Backlit Keyboard on both. The only hardware differences are the old computer has an Intel Core i7-3610QM processor (specified by me when I ordered the computer) and a 32GB mSATA SSD while the new computer has an Intel Core i5-3210M processor and no mSATA SSD.
So what makes the "Special Edition" so special? Is there REALLY anything different about "Special Edition" computers, or was that just some sort of marketing hype?

A:What is so special about an Inspiron 17R 7720 "Special Edition"?

The mSATA cache drive was one of the differentiators.  When that system was built, SSDs were appreciably more expensive than they are now.

2. Intel's and Dell's Update apps to find drivers.
3. Whatever Windows 7 installation app gets from the internet when pointed to go online at the start of Windows 7 installation, as there is an option to get drivers from internet at the beginning if Widows 7 installation is running from under Windows 10.
4. Alternative websites and forums for drivers.

Hi, i have an HP Pavilion 17-G133CY laptop and i am planning to put an SSD in it for a little while and installing Windows 7 on it for fun.  I know that HP does not provide drivers for Windows 7 and i can just extract the files from the Windows 10 Driver files and should be able to install them on Windows 7.  I am able to get most of the drivers for Windows 7 but one driver is missing and i think i know why.  USB 3.0 Driver is not for download and i think that is because when Windows 10 was released USB 3.0 was implimented on more computers that it was when Windows 7 was out.  i am looking for the driver or hoping that when i install Windows 7 and run updates that it is able to get the USB 3.0 driver or i can download one that will work on Windows 7 and allow me to use all 3 of my USB ports.  I don't want to be stuck with 1 USB 2.0 Port nor USB 2.0 speeds.

Hi everyone - periodically, while using the new Edge browser on Windows 10 - my laptop will freeze up and give a "Graphics Driver has stopped responding and recovered message".  It happens on certain websites more than others (Facebook, CNN, a couple of forums that I frequent)
I haven't noticed the issue in other browsers, although I really like Edge and prefer to use it - especially in tablet mode.
I can make the problem go away by going to Internet Options -> Advanced -> Accelerated Graphics and *Un* checking "Use Software Rendering Instead of GPU Rendering".
Doing this, however, obviously results in choppier page loads and sluggish performance while running Video or games.
Is there an update or hotfix that can fix this? My graphics drivers are all updated to the latest provided on Dell's website.
I will post an event log entry the next time it happens, but just putting this out there in the mean time.

Greetings! I'm currently working on reinstalling win on my cousin's y580 with following specs:Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3110M CPU @ 2.40GHz8GB RAMGEFORCE GTX 660M Everything went smoothly until the part where I want to install USB 3.0 drivers (responsible for 2x3.0 USB and 2.0 USB port). I tried everything from installing win7 drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling them with Windows Update to forcing INTEL drivers intalation. So far no luck. Browsing the forum I happened to find the topic: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/USB-3-0-Ports-Not-Working-Y580/m-p/3457050#M149... , where the guy assumes that motherboard is broken cause he bought it with "broken USB ports". That is not the case, ports were working just fine on win8 until the moment win10 was introduced. In the device manager the driver shows the error 10. I also came for advice to my friend using the same notebook with better specs(i7) and they are working fine for him. So my question finally is: have anyone solved this problem for the given spec already and/or is it the case of the 64bit system(not fully supported with those specs)? I am frankly out of ideas rn. Cheers, Hubert

Hello friends,

I'm having problems trying to install Windows 7, hopefully you guys can help.

I own an HP Stream 13 like this one here: Amazon.com: HP Stream 13.3-Inch Laptop (Intel Celeron, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB SSD, Cobalt Blue) with Office 365 Personal for One Year: Computers & Accessories

It came with Windows 10 pre-installed. I get free access to Windows products via dreamspark through my school. I decided I wanted to download Windows 7. I got through the setup and ended up at the partition part where it says:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. Windows needs the driver for device [Intel SD Host Controller]. Click 'Load Driver' and load the required device driver."
I have tried downloading Intel's automatic driver detection utility thing, but that did not work.

I have also tried Shift+F10, diskpart, list disk, sel disk 0, clean. But it came with an error in the command prompt that says:
"Virtual Disk Service error:
Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot,
system, pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume."

I'm at a stump. Any help is greatly appreciated.

if you only have 2gb Ram, then you'll have to use 32bit versions, or buy more Ram

The drivers should available via the HP website for that model

I am going to replace the HDD in my Inspiron with an SSD drive.  Since I don't need Rapid Storage to speed up my HDD, I'd like to disable it and reformat the 32GB m.2 drive for spare storage, and move my HDD to the second bay of my Inspiron.  But I'm unclear how to completely disable Rapid Storage.  It looks like I need to disable it in BIOS (or whatever it's called now), but I can't figure it out.  Can anyone help?

Can the laptop handle 2 8GB dimms for a total of 16 instead of how it is sold with 8. The laptop would be viable but the memory is holding it back.

A:Inspiron 17R Special Edition Memory

Welcome to the community.
Well, Dell does not recommend 2 sticks of 8 GB RAM each installed in this system as that may cause a motherboard failure. However installing 8 GB, 1600 MHZ chips may or may not work.
Let me know in case there are any other concerns. Glad to be of assistance.
Thanks & Regards

I have a set of HP Z210 Workstations with E3-1245-V2 Xeon Cpu's, SSD boot drives and varying sizes of memory from 8-16GB 1600Mghz DDR3 ECC. We use Windows 8 Enterprise for these machines, with Hyper-V enabled.
We get regular driver failures from the 2 sets of USB controllers on the machines (Mainly and issue for the KB & Mouse) that can only be resolved with a full power down (not restart) and a power up. This happens at least once every 1-3 days per machine.
I had gone through the HP support, but they have advised this isn't an issue on their side, and I had agreed all along. I was just hoping to get some traction by notifying them. Anyway, after a lengthy trouble shooting session, we found that once Hyper-V
was enabled, the fault arose.
As it was an Intel chip, they I asked them. They advised that on Windows 8, the drivers are supplied via windows update and that it was not their issue.
So, how can I get this resolved? Not through HP or Intel, surely through MS? Maybe not. Disabling Hyper-V is not desired as I the teams with these PC's are developers and require local visualization. Also, we have templates ready for Hyper-V, I don't really
want to remove Hyper-V and use Virtual box or VMWare workstation. but I am at wits end with the fault and lack of help from the vendors.
Please help.

A:Hyper-V causes Intel(R) Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller driver to fail

I have found a work around for this fault with the USB failure - ENSURE YOU POWER  THE MACHINE OFF - DO NOT RESTART.
Its almost like the restart doesn't initialise the device correct, thus causing a failure.

I have inspiron 15r se with 1TB HDD.
I would like to add a mSATA card to my system to be able to use IRST.
Is it possible now?
I am skeptic because I have read online that systems which were not shipped with 32 GB mSATA card, doesn't have mSATA port for later installation.
When I purchased the system at that time dell had the option for adding 32 GB mSATA card in the customization section, but now dell has removed the whole customization section from the website. And in the pre-configured models, there is no option for mSATA card.
Please clear this doubt and if possible post the pictures of the system and the daughter board where mSATA card can be installed.
If you need any further details regarding my system configuration, feel free to ask.
Thanks in advance

A:Installing mSATA card on Inspiron 15R special edition (7520)

Hey everyone!
All those who are willing to buy Dell Inspiron 15R special edition (7520), and would like to upgrade the system with mSATA card manually after making the purchase, must know that there are  two different configurations with which the system is being sold. While on one of these configuration there is an mSATA port available on the daughter board (part number N7JHH) in the system. Whereas on the other configuration there is no mSATA port available on the daughter board (part number MRDMM) present in the system.
Most of the Dell representatives don't have any information in this regard and they are openly stating that mSATA cards are compatible with 7520. Please don't go by their words and ask them specifically if the above mentioned daughter board is present in the system or not. Only a very few of them are stating  "If the system was not ordered with mSATA  card most likely your system daughter board will not have the mSATA slot", that too after days of inquiry.
If you are hoping to upgrade the system with mSATA card, then my advice to you would be to make a prudent decision before purchasing.

Hi all - quick question. I have a Inspiron 13 7000 special edition. So far, I love it. The only nit that I have with it is that frequently, when waking up from sleep - even if I just have the lid closed for 5 minutes - it takes about 30 seconds to 1 minute to wake from sleep.
It's pretty annoying and if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
More info:
Latest BIOS installed
All drivers up to date using Dell's update utility.

Hello I have a question, perhaps made thousands of times, but I never found a complete answer to it. ...and perhaps this is also a good opportunity to make clear about possible risks, because I have not read Dell's official warnings anywhere. I own a Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720 with nVidia GT 650M with Windows 7 64 bit (Ultimate). For your knowledge (as you already know), there is also an Intel HD graphics 4000 on the motherboard. I need to install the new or latest version of nVidia drivers because the nVIDIA Geforce GT 650M driver for Win7 64-bit, downloadable from the Dell site are related to version 331.65 of March 2014, while the current version available on the nVidia site is 387.92 WHQL relased at 2017 october 9 My purpose is to use Davinci resolve which at startup gives me the error: "No CUDA Acceleration Hardware Detected ..." and the only solution is to use a recent version of these drivers relased directly from nVidia. My question is: can I install them WITHOUT DAMAGE the HARDWARE ? (in this case the whole motherboard). If I only have software problems, I do not care, as I can do a reformat and restore with drivers provided by Dell. but, again, I'm worried that there might be some damage to the board:could it happen or, if it does not fit well, I can only have software problems? Please note that if there is damage to the hardware, it is necessary to change the motherboard! Can I be quiet if I use them? (I always refer to hardware damage) Can s... Read more

A:Driver Geforce GT 650M for Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720 delivered by nVidia

TLDR; Installing the drivers from nVidia won't hurt your computer.
Installing the video drivers for your nVidia card directly from them won't damage the hardware.  Normally Dell's drivers are ones that have been tested by Dell to work with the machine at that time, or some bug fixes.

I have a Dell Inspiron 17R 7720 laptop computer that I bought new from Dell back in 2012. I have has several problems with the power supply connector on this computer - Dell replaced it once, I replaced it myself once and it is not working again. Both the BIOS and Win7 show the charger not connected even though I have it plugged in. Not a charger problem; we have several other Dell laptops with the same charger and it will not show any of the chargers as connected or charging the battery.
I went on Ebay, a used replacement motherboard would run me $200 or I could get a complete working used 17R SE 7720 computer for $300. A no brainer for me; the extra $100 bought me a lot of spare parts, and I love having spare parts for old obsolete equipment.
But I'm questioning what difference, if any, there is between a 17R 7720 and a 17R SE 7720. I have my original Dell invoice from when I bought the computer and there is no "SE" in the model nomenclature anyplace that I could find, but all the 7720s listed on Ebay had "SE" in the model number. So for question number 1, is there any difference between a "SE" and a non "SE" 17R 7720, or was the "SE" some marketing decision thrown into the mix? FWIW,the model label on the new computer just says "Inspiron 7720".
Now on two question 2. For right now, I am basically using the new computer as a remote battery charger for my old computer, as the old computer's ha... Read more

A:Inspiron 17R 7720 vs 17R SE 7720 and parts swapping between the two

If it's just the adapter not being recognized, have you changed the DC jack, which is usually the cause if it's not the adapter?
That may solve the problem.
The two models are the same except for peripherals - you should be able to swap things over (you will need to set the BIOS for IRST AND you should make a full backup of the drive before beginning).  You will also need to swap over your AC adapter if the i5 is running on a 90W unit - the i7 will need a 130 W or better power adapter.

If anybody has or eventually gets the New Inspiron 3650 (preferably the intel model, but AMD model info useful too) could you please post some info on it, specs etc.... seems to be little or none yet and I'm considering getting it to turn into a htpc.
What type of PSU, How many watts?
How much room for the GPU? Full Height or low profile?
How many fans? just the back fan?
Is there any possibility of a 2 HDD setup if you remove the disc drive?
Also the ram listed on the official site is DDR3L 1600MHz... shouldn't it be DDR4 2133MHz?
Any info on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated by me :)

I found this old thread which relates exactly to the problem I am experiencing:

Ricoh SD Host Controller

I am able to install this , and get an updated driver off windows update.
HOWEVER, in device manager, I see this message with a yellow "!"

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers
required for this device. (Code 31)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and

Any ideas how to fix this?

And there was this answer:

RE: Ricoh SD Host Controller
I figured out the problem. I have the Inspiron 6400, so your mileage may vary.

When I updated the device Ricoh SD Bus Host Adapter (under SD host adapters
in device manager) it messed up the Ricoh MMC Host Controller. So I went to
device manager and rolled back the latest version for the SD bus Host Adapter
(I am now using version 6.0.5384.4 dated 6/21/2006) and the problem was

So the MMC controller device driver wasn't really the problem. It was just
the symptom.

Hope this helps.
