Preferred Solution: How-to change Fixed Basic Display Adapter resolution?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just threw the consumer preview of windows 8 on an old desktop that was previously running 7, and now I can't get it to recognize my graphics card. It's just an integrated AMD chip, the Radeon X200. I found a copy of the legacy drivers for vista online and ran the installer in compatibility mode, but it won't install the drivers because windows will not pick up the card at all and this microsoft basic display adapter is all that shows up in device manager for display adapters. If need be I have a radeon x1650 pro PCIe card I can install, but would prefer to just get the integrated X200 chip working properly if possible. Right now the resolution is awful and anything that requires even the slightest bit of hardware acceleration runs like a dog. How can I fix this problem?

A:Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

Also this is a full install, not a virtual machine. Just ran the upgrade from 7 ultimate, didn't wipe and do a clean install.

After restoring a Windows 8 pro image and upgrading to 8.1, I only have 2 resolutions to choose form: 1280x1024 and 1024x768.Tried to update the drivers but windows tells me it's the best driver. I tried installing an original driver form HP but it wouldn't install. Can't remember why. Can anyone point me to the proper driver? Thanks,James

A:Windows 8.1 Using Basic Display Adapter

Hi, James: Your PC is not supported by HP for W8, W8.1 or W10, and there are no W8, 8.1 or W10 drivers for the integrated AMD Radeon HD 4200 graphics adapter your PC has. So the only suggestion I can offer would be to try manually installing the graphics driver from your PC's support page as follows...We'll try the easy way first and if that doesn't work, we will then try the more advanced method. 1. Download and install the free file utility.  The 2nd item on the page is for 64 bit. http://www.7-zip.org/ 2.  After you install 7-Zip, download and save but do not run the graphics driver from your PC's support page. Original driver for the ATI Radeon 3000 and RS880 graphics solutions. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software11/COL33370/pv-82994-1/sp46332.exe 3. After you download and save the graphics driver, right click on it and select 7-Zip from the list of options. 4.  Have 7-Zip Extract to:  and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp46332). 5. Once 7-Zip has created the driver folder, go to the device manager, click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category. Click on the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.   Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder 7-Zip created. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and see if the driver installs that way. &nbs... New Lenovo P50 Win10 Nvidia Quadro M1000M (Driver 8/27/15,

The Nvidia was part of the base package--didn't really need it.

1. If I have this fancy adapter why then is the Intel HD Graphics 530 also running per device manager? Shouldn't one or the other be automatically disabled?

It appears that the Nvidia is not the default operator of the two. I needed to load a graphics program by its .exe. I had right clicked for another reason and was given the option to (paraphrased) 'use high performance graphics' which to me indicates the Nvidia otherwise apparently would not have been used. This seems nuts. If there are two display adapters and one is clearly superior, it should always be used?

2. If a second monitor is VGA, DVI can I attach it to the machine's HDMI port with an adapter (machine doesn't have a VGA port) or no? Btw, the machine also has a Thunderbolt? 3 Port.

A:A few basic display adapter questions

1) Web search for NVidia's Optimus technology. (It uses the Intel graphics for low-performance purposes, and the nVidia GPU for high performance stuff. The point is power saving in a notebook.)

2) Yes, there are adapters from HDMI to VGA and DVI. (I'm a little surprised about the VGA: it's analog, and I didn't think there were any analog video signals on an HDMI port. Judging from the price of an HDMI to VGA adapter, it must be passive.) There are also Thunderbolt adapters: Thunderbolt is a superset of DisplayPort.

Hey guys, I have nc6400, with ati mobility radeon x1300 and 6 hours ago I've installed win 8.First I wanted to encounter graphics card problem. It doesn't recognize card, it just says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. I tried updating it with Browse and let me pick option, but without any success. Even tried what this guy recommended, but without luck.

"I had this problem with a Mobility Radeon X1300. My solution was to use a tool called mobility modder.net. I found the most recent version of Catalyst that supported my card and put that setup file and the mobility modder.net setup file on a flash drive. I then went to a different computer that wasn't running Windows 8 and ran the Catalyst setup file, but after the part where it extracts its files I clicked cancel. Then I installed mobility modder.net and navigated to C:\ATI\Support\(your version of catalyst)\Driver and clicked mod. When the tool finished I cut and pasted the entire C:\ATI directory and put it on my flash drive and took it back to my computer that was running Windows 8. I then cut and pasted the ATI directory to the root of that computer's hard drive. I then opened up that directory until I got to the setup.exe file and I ran it and it installed perfectly. When it was done it was running the driver and Catalyst Control Center perfectly."

When I go to screen resolution options, I can only see Generic Non-pnp Monitor and resolution option (which I can't change): 1024x768

That laptop was only supported up until Vista, and the chipset it runs on (AMD IGP Xpress 1150) also only has drivers available for Vista and XP. You can try the Vista drivers, but I'm not sure how well they'll work:

You sure are. AMD stopped putting driver's out for HD 4000 series and prior video cards before Windows 8 was released.

I have an old noname custom-built laptop which has the following hardware:

Intel 855 mobile chipset (the desktop equivalent is 865, socket 478)
Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz socket 478 CPU
Intel 855G graphics adaptor
Realtek AC'97 audio

Since the graphics card is too old, I cannot install Intel's XP drivers. If I do, after next reboot they are considered outdated and they always change to Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, which of course supports no Aero and no 3D.

After trying many registry tricks to enable aero without success, I gave up. All these tricks need a WDDM graphics driver and they are meant to enable aero in Windows Vista Home Basic WITH an WDDM driver installed. Since I used Standard VGA Graphics Adapter none would work. The same would be true if I could install latest Windows XP drivers, but then I would at least have some DirectX functionality.

When Windows 8 Developer Preview was released, I tested it in a similarly old laptop which had no WDDM drivers for its old ATI graphics card. But Windows 8 install Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead of Standard VGA graphics adapter, which IS WDDM! Then I tried to copy all the relevant files (INF and DLLs) for the driver from Windows 8 in order to install it in Windows 7. Unfortunatelly installation fails, as it tries to install a service and cannot do that for some reason Anyone else that managed to use the Microsoft Basic Display Adaptor driver in Windows 7 or has seen anything relevant on the Internet... I might not be getting the picture right, but if the Nvidia driver shows in the device manager, it wouldn't matter much what CPUID calls it.
OTOH, if you just have a generic driver installed, then by all means, that needs to be fixed.

I have a Lenovo Yoga 3 14 Laptop. I reinstalled the windows 10, because after the November update i been having issues with the laptop turning off by itself and not turning back on.  Now my issue is that my laptop only turns on with the basic display adapter. When i try to update the display adapter driver, it turns off mid installation, and doesnt even complete it. However, when i hook up an external display, such as HDMI to my TV, then it is able to upgrade the driver successfully. But, as soon as i remove the external display, the laptop shuts off immidiately and doesnt turn on. The next step is to revert back to the basic display driver to continue using the laptop. Have to go back to safe mode and rollback to previous driver. The reason why i need to update my display driver is because the brightness is stuck on full.  Also 6 months ago i had to replace my screen because it cracked, but it was working fine with no issue for several months. Suddenly the issues just started occuring. Any suggestions on whats wrong or cwhat i can do to solve this issue, much appriciated!

If you don’t have a CD with your video driver on it you will have to download it from the manufacturer’s site.

You normally install it through device manager – right click My Computer>Properties>Device manager and double left click on display adapters and then your card.

I have a Lenovo Yoga 900. A while back, my younger brother threw my computer and cracked the screen, so I disable to touch display adapter in device manager so the screen would stop flipping out. In addition to the screen breaking, I have had a lot of problems with the display adapter since. Currently, I have the Intel Iris Graphics 540 display adapter installed but disabled (its the one the system wants me to have) and have Microsoft Basic Display Adapter being used. Whenever I enable the Intel Iris Graphics display adapter, the screen stops working and will go black (the computer is still running and everything else works, like I can plug an external display in and it will work with the Intel display adapter enabled). I have updated and reinstalled the display adapter multiple times (through windows update, Lenovos website, and Intel's website too) but it still has the same problem regardless. My computer works when using the microsoft display adapter, except nothing works as well as it used to. For example with the microsoft basic display adapter, I am unable to change the screen brightness from full brightness (I have tried fixing this multiple times to no avail), the computer can't detect an external display, and the frame rate is awful. For videos it will do okay, but any sort of game is so bad that you are unable to play it. I have spent a lot of time already trying to fix this but have no clue how to, any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Hello Winger84 and welcome to BC The issue you are having could be related to the malware on your system. I see that you have an HJT log posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/137270/marketflipfakesearchanddestroy/ Because you have that log posted, DO NOT make any further changes to your computer: deleting files, editing the registry, using special fix tools, installing or uninstalling software etc. as this will make it more difficult for the HJT team to help you. Please be patient as the HJT team is EXTREMELY busy. DO NOT bump your log as the team may think that someone is already helping you. Greetings, 1. Only if you are in warranty. 2. You can enter 'SETUP" , set BIOS to defaults, and "save and exit". Staples replaced the p6-2133w MB with a similar board  used by HP in a different product number. You should get HD screen resolution. This integrated graphics board may be HP OEM. Remove the AMD graphics driver. Let Win 10 install the driver and see if that helps. Install a discrete graphics card if the AMD GPU is not compatible with Win 10. Cheers!

Check your display adapters under Device Manager (Right click My computer>Properties>Device Manager). If there is an exclamation mark next to your video adapter, then there is an issue. Try resintalling the driver (online or CD that it came with, doesnt matter to start). After the install, reboot the system and then verify that the resolution can be changed.

Can I just ask as it is a little unclear, do you actually have an Nvidia 8600 Graphics card fitted in your PC?

It looks in the screenshot that you have a laptop not a Desktop PC as it is showing a power cable unplugged icon?

You can't just change the display adapter to an Nvidia 8600, the Nvidia 8600 is a specific dedicated graphics card for desktop PC's.

I Just downgraded my computer from windows 10 to windows 8.1 and when i go to device manager it says microsoft basic display adapter but my computer's graphics card name is Ati Mobillity Radeon x1300. Can Someone please give me a Ati mobillity radeon x1300 driver download for windows 8.1? Thanks!

A:Device Manager Saying "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter"

Doubt you will find a 8.1 or 10 driver for a display chip that old.

EDIT: You can try Vista or 7 drivers in compatibility mode as described here: Radeon x1300 and windows 8 - Microsoft Community

I'm having a really annoying issue where the only working driver I can use is the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". Every single other driver I have tried will all cause me to experience BSOD and the error message "Display Driver Has Stopped Responding". The issue appeared a month ago and it has took me up until yesterday to single it down to be a driver issue and not some kind of hardware fault.

My graphics card is a Sapphire R9 280x and so I use AMD Catalyst Drivers. The issue first came about when updating to 15.7.1 back when I was on Windows 7. I updated to Windows 10 to see if this would resolve my error but it still persisted exactly as it did before. So far I have tried using 15.7, 15.7.1, 15.8 beta and I have even tried just using the driver that Windows will install for my graphics card and all of these cause the errors I mentioned before. Using the basic driver allows me to watch videos and browse the internet fine however games are unplayable as the FPS is between 1-10 when usually it would be 60-120.

I am desperate to find a solution to this as I am just starting university tomorrow and I really miss being able to play games with my friends.

Any suggestions will be welcomed as I am willing to try anything at this point.

A:Can only use "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" as my graphics driver

Both of these articles say similar stuff you tried and some may have to try.
How old is the card ? Was it always in this PC listed in specs ? Nice motherboard and CPU, what size wattage PSU do you use, not listed ?

This the card, needs 750w PSU, wow ! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814202061

When I try to change my video adapter the only option I get is Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

I have a Nvidia Geforce Go 7400

Operating System: Windows 8 Pro 32-bit
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: Latitude D820
BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A10
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7400 @ 2.16GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz

A:Windows can only find "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter"

You may need to use drivers from Dell, if they've customized the device ID of the graphics adapter.

Unfortunately, the latest drivers offered at support.dell.com are for Vista. They may be worth a try. (Win8 is supposed to be able to use WDDM 1.0 drivers.) Try the installation troubleshooting compatibility mode if they won't install by themselves.

Hi folks,

Today I've been having a few problems with the PC. This morning I could get it to boot, I just had a black screen, which was solved by re-seating the graphics card. This afternoon, I heard windows 10 giving that "new hardware dectected" beep and then locking up. I could still move my mouse and hear sound, but couldn't click anywhere on the screen. I powered it down using the case switch, then it refused to turn back on - it got as far as the windows logo, but then the screen went black and keyboard lights died. Eventually windows 10 put me into safe mode and I was able to scrub the graphics drivers and re-install them.
When I got back into windows, I discovered in the Device Manager a new "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". Looking in the event log, this was apparently installed last night. I have not changed the hardware in my PC and am rather concerned about it. I have it disabled - if I uninstall it, on the next scan for new hardware it picks it up again.

Any ideas? Thanks

So I recently Installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my alienware m17x laptop and I can't get it to recognize my graphics card. I have Dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M and Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9100 Processor. Every game I try to run is slow as hell. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Sorry if not providing enough information, kind of new here.

32 or 64 bit Windows?

If 32, I can mod an inf for you to install latest driver.

If 64, I can still do it but then you'd have to sign it (I never have been arsed how to but it's easy) or disable driver enforcement permanently or at boot.

What is your hardware id? Right click the Basic Adapter in device manager, Properties, Details tab. Change the dropdown to say Hardware ids. Copy/paste the results here and please do not use a screenshot instead.

Question that I could not find an answer for on Google before I buy. I currently have a Dell 6420 using Win 7 SP1 with a 1366 X 768 display that I have the text set at 125% so I can read it. What display is going to look better on an X1 Carbon if I use that setting, the 2560 x 1440 WQHD IPS LED Display or the 1920 x 1080 Full HD IPS LED Display using Win 7 Pro?
