Lenovo Ideapad Y580 - Keyboard Issue

Q: Lenovo Ideapad Y580 - Keyboard Issue

I've been using this laptop for around a year or so now, and it's worked perfectly up until this point in time. The issue that I'm currently having is entirely mechanical. At the moment, my keyboard is intact and works just fine. However, if I press a key, (mainly the 'e' key) off-center, it pops the entire key up and I have to click it into place. It's not life-threatening or crucial to the machine's function, but when I am busy typing papers or lesson plans, having a key on the most constantly used vowel key continually pop up really puts a dampener in things. I've taken the key out and have tried to click it back in. While I can't see what's going on (given that there's a key in the way!), I can most certainly feel it clicking into place twice, both clicks stemming from the right side of the 'e' key. It seems that, to the best of my knowledge, only two out of four prongs that are meant to keep the key in place and in line are actually snapping and holding the key down. Whenever I type off-center and to the right, the entire left side of the key snaps up and must be pushed back into place. I'm wondering if there's anything I can or should do. Given that I've had my machine for over a year now, I'm unsure if my warranty still covers it (speaking of, is there a way to check warranty status online?). Please, if anyone has any advice on how to fix or replace a busted key/keyboard, please, let me know!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A replacement keyboard (chicony, oki, or dafon are the makers - be sure to look for the manufacturer label and p/n right below the lenovo p/n on the back to get a genuine keyboard) would make a good spares, they are about $30 on ebay. I replaced a broken key on a few different laptops but much prefer to swap out the entire keyboard. Once a single key goes bad it's likely that more keys will start to fail (note that 'e' is perhaps the most commonly used key on your keyboard because it's the most popular vowel. Other popular keys like 't' might be failing sometime soon). So I would suggest you buy a spare keyboard and save it until you can't live without it, the procedure to replace the keyboard is a 10 minute swap. If you want to replace a key, a sharp tipped (xacto-style) knife blade, and a loupe (magnifying lens) are important accessories. Buy from a reputable site which has good instructions ( http://www.laptopkey.com/ ). Unfortunately, the key and hinge are manufacturer-specific (OKI, Chicony, Dafon, see above) so you will need to determine it from the guide on www.laptopkey.com. When I fixed our Acer c720 I also used needlenose pliers to bend a metal tab back into place, the key hinge wasn't seating correctly because the metal tab had bent and was open too wide. The Acer c720 has a nightmare keyboard to replace with 75 different locking plastic tabs that bind it to the undersize of the palmrest, so i had little choice but to replace the single key or buy an entire keyboard/palmrest assembly. Thinkpad T-series keyboards are like the hood of a car, just pop 2-4 screws and push towards the LCD, then it pivots open like a hood and you can remove the connectors and install a new one's connectors and screw it down in 5-10 mins. The 2-4 screws to remove often have a little picture of a keyboard on the back of the laptop or search for "Lenovo Y580 Hardware Maintenance Manual" and download the instructions for all the repairs to your laptop.

Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

Alright, so early I tried to overclock my Nvidia GTX 660m Card, and it worked. the base clock speed is 835mhz, and the memory is 2500mhz. I OC'd the clock speed to 970mhz, and the memory to 3000mhz. It all worked fine, and boosted my gaming framerate quite a bit in PlanetSide 2 and Skyrim. ( I used NvidiaInspector to overclock, btw.) I went back to the overclocking interface, and accidentally set the memory rate to around +1300mhz. I then, without realizing, clicked on set OC settings, and it crashed my card. It rebooted, but now whenever I go into Nvidia Inspector to check my clock/mem speed, they're both set on 405mhz while idle or if there's a high load on my card. It's been stuck like this for a few hours, and I've tried several tweaks to fix it, including a reboot, rolling back the drivers, and then reinstalling the drivers, etc., with no resolve. I really need some help, as this is affecting my gaming horribly, and I'm getting terrible framerates. Please give suggestions/fixes as quickly as possible!

Thanks,

Hi! I've got Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Silver (https://www.alza.cz/EN/lenovo-ideapad-yoga-13-silver-d375124.htm), and while I am quite content with the device, my keyboard stopped working. I was wondering whether any of you might know and suggest an online reseller (official or otherwise), where I could get hold of a replacement keyboard. Now, I suppose backlit keyboard versions of newer Yoga laptops will not work I guess, will they? From what I have read Yoga 13 Silver does not have the slot required for backlit, but aside that, will the keyboard function and will it fit (dimension-wise)? If so, what is the voltage and current required? Would soldering a small battery to the backlit cable be a good idea (I accept the fact that I wouldn't be able to regulate it)? Thank you in advance!ck

Hello,  I recently got myself a LENOVO ideapad 310, like just about close to less than a month ago and have faced several issues.  My cursor will start to become pixelated sometimes and become the normal cursor again, this has happened since the very beginning, but I chose to ignore it as it does not really affect much of my experience using this notebook.  It was up until just now, when I decided to play a game of League of Legends (Its not very graphic intensive), that my keyboard suddenly malfunctioned in the middle of it. Not knowing what is the problem, I couldn't quit the game either as the game menu can only be accessed via the Esc key. The surface suddenly became quite hot and I forcefully turned off my laptop as I always believed that restarting your computer is always a solution.  After the ideapad turned off, I couldn't turn it on for quite awhile, until I decided to hold the power button while it's off. It then turned on but it could not load past the LENOVO logo screen with the small circle at the bottom. After waiting for a good 30 minutes or so, I decided to turn it off once again and use the NOVO button. All while doing that, I had turned on a fan and blew at my laptop at max speed hoping it would cool down.  After using the NOVO button and a few turn ons and offs, the laptop started working normally again, and here I am posting on the forums.  There is no issue now, it's working perfectly fine. Hello, My laptop configuration:OS: Windows 10 64 bits (up-to-date)Model : Lenovo Ideapad Y700 15ISK (80NV)BIOS : CDCN37WW Five days ago the keyboard suddenly stopped to respond (nb : the Num Lock led remained on). I tried to restart Windows but since it could not (stucked on the reboot screen) I pressed the power button and heard a "clack" sound. When I restarted the computer the hard drive made some noices and the fans started to turn at high speed for ~3 seconds.NB : I upgraded to bios CDCN35WW few days before. After the incident I updated to CDCN37WW.  Today the problem happened again (keyboard not responding). Before trying to reboot I unpluged and pluged back my mouse (Lenovo gaming mouse). As I expected, it did not function once I pluged it back. I tried to log out before rebooting. At that time Windows crashed and I saw the BSOD for 1 second before the computer shut down and reboot showing the Novo Button Menu (the keyboard was still not responding at this time).I rebooted by pressing the power button, once again some worrysome electrical noices while I was doing so.The computer restarted and once again noices from the hard drive + fans at full speed. Any suggestion ? Are BIOS updates bugged ?Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, the latptop is only about 2.5 months old now... 3 weeks ago randomly the keyboard's keys on the laptop itself stopped working. No clue why, Ive checked drivers, did a reboot, tried safe mode, etc... It's only on the laptop itself. The keys that work are tyhg caps lock num lock and maybe a couple others... Ive never spilled anything on the laptop nor have I ever dropped it. I was in love with this laptop for the price I paid for it at Best Buy until the keyboard stopped working on it... It just randomly happened and I'm not sure why. The keys don't appear to stick or anything like that... (normal keystrokes just nothing happens in result of clicking them) I am using a keyboard plugged into it right now... I really need to get this fixed and I'm very upset at the fact it happened just 2 months after the purchase... So that cancels out my bestbuy 1 month warranty right there. I really can't deal with this much longer considering the fact that I was planning to use this laptop for my work.. If I can't get a simple easy fix I will have to find something new somewhere else... sorry to say. Praying for an easy solution/fix.

Hi tachilla,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Checking the general specification for IdeaPad 300 (15'') Platform Speci?cations here, backlit keyboard features is not available to similar model types 80Q7 as the motherboard does not offer power connection for the keyboard backlit as shown from the hardware manual FRU keyboard list pages 78-81.

No power connection portSample keyboard with backlit cable

You can follow the keyboard guide here on page 40-41 of the hardware manual to physical check on your motherboard model as it may not likely be compatible with a backlighted keyboard making it not possible to upgrade.

Hope this helps answer your query.

It seems Lenovo made the right Shift key half its normal size and stuck the page up key next to it on the right. Every time I go to shift, (to capitalize the 1st letter of my sentence of when I type a name) I hit page up and my cursor jerks up to the next line (or several lines). This is beyond annoying!!!! Unfortunately I just realized this after I brought the computer home from Best Buy. Who the heck would look at the keyboard if all the letters and symbols and other keys are at the right place where they belong? I am used to the "normal" keyboard settings since 20 years and whenever I bought a new laptop I never checked the keyboards. I have no idea how I will re-train myself to reach waaaaaaay to the right with my right pinky to hit the Shift key. Anyone has a good suggestion?

Hey everyone, I have a question regarding my Ideapad Y580 and a strange sound error I have been experiencing over the past few months. Windows 8.1 Pro w/ Media Centeri7 3630QM8GB RAMGTX660M500GB Samsung EVO 840 Ok here's the sound issue.  After using a program such as Minecraft, VLC, Nightingale, the sound will completely cut out.  When checking volumes, sound will not register.  Oftentimes, the sound control panel will say the device is busy. Things I've tried so far:1) Disabled Realtek Digital Output2) Installed latest driver3) Checked current processes for remnants of programs using the sound card.. nothing. Sometimes when I have one of the programs open, for example playing minecraft, when I start a video in VLC, there will be no sound.  The only sound comes from the game. The only thing that really restores the audio is a full restart of the system.  Logging out and back in will not restore the sound.Has anyone experienced this issue?  Is there a way to fix this problem?  Thanks guys!

A:Ideapad Y580 sound cutting out

One suggestion..... have you tried uninstalling the audio driver, reboot the computer and then install a fresh copy of the driver.  If the previous driver installation was faulty, installing the latest driver may have not corrected the problem.

My original HD is going bad so I decided to buy a new HD and an mSATA SSD.  If your old HD is still operating, you should be able to clone it using the steps shown below.   Be warned that you must clone the whole drive, including all the hidden partitions, and can only resize the Windows Partition or the OKR recovery will not work, so the new m.2 SSD must be large enough to hold the entire contents of all the partitions of your existing HD drive.    Use Windows Drive Manager to view the sizes of the other parititons on your HD> If you need to make room, back up all your data and then delete from the current OS drive partition before cloning. http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/install-m2-ssd-lenovo-t440s Read this thread as well, it points out some important rules that must be followed when cloning so thaat OKR will work afterwards.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Enable-onekey-recovery-after-HDD-to-SSD-cloning... Hope that helps, and good luck

Does anyone actually know if the "Dust Removal" in the energy management program actually works to remove dust from the laptop? I'm a bit reluctant to open up and dissect my laptop to check for any dust accumulation at this point, since everything has been running fine. This question came to mind since I saw that the filter at the bottom of my laptop was kinda caked in fine dust - wondered if the same was inside my laptop. A:Dust removal in Ideapad Y580

hi marshchen,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

That application can only minimized collection of dust in the Exhaust system of your Laptop.
Since the process of the vents is to get air fom the outside to pass through the heatsink . Dust collection cannot really be avoided.

One symptom of a fan and vent dust is that when the vents blow very hot and minimal air and the laptop is heating up more than usual.

A yearly cleaning would be ok.
You can refer to the Maintenance Manual of this model on how to open the cover and get to the heat sink.
You might also want to refresh and apply new Thermal paste to the Heat sink.

Just be careful on the plastic parts and also wear an anti static starp. If you're not comfortable doing this, You can opt to have a repair center do this.

Best Regards

Hi! I'm having an issue with my new laptop and I really hope someone can help me with possible solutions or at least explanations. Thank you in advance for reading about my problem  In short, I've recently purchased a Lenovo IdeaPad 520S laptop, with the following specs: Intel® Core? i7-7500U 2.70 GHz, Kaby Lake, 14", Full HD, IPS, 8GB, 256GB SSD, nVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB I was looking for a good compromise between mobility and performance (with a little bit of gaming capacity thrown in), and this is the best I could find within my budget. And, while overall the laptop works as well as I'd imagined, I'm having a really frustrating problem on the gaming front.Specifically, while playing a rather old game (Mass Effect 1, for what it's worth), the laptop gets hot (to very hot) exactly in the much needed WASD keyboard area, thus rendering the game nearly unplayable. Now, I fully understand that this is nowhere near a gaming laptop, but we're talking about a 10+ year old game! Not only that, but I've played the same game before, on a significantly lower configuration, with nearly no issues at all. Actually, I've played many games, on laptops with weaker processors and integrated graphics, and I haven't experienced this much heat.So... has anyone encountered this issue with a similar laptop? And, if so, can anything be done about it? I find it really frustrating that I can't even play such an old game in decent conditions, not to mention disappointing...Thank ... Read more

Hi All,I have a Z400 touch. The keys "8", "I", "K", and "< ," are not working, even in safe mode. I strongly suspect it is due to dust, and I should clean under the keys. My question is; is it okay to pry those keys off the board directly with a screwdriver? Or would it get damaged? EDIT: I bought this machine in 2014, used it as my primary computer until around March 2017, after which I've been using a different laptop. I'm trying to rejuvenate my old laptop at the moment, so it could be used by someone else. Thanks.

I recently purchased this laptop and did not spend any time playing on the keyboard prior to the purchase.  I am now regretting this purchase as I cannot understand nor adapt to the right shift key not being in the standard location. Why would Lenovo design a keyboard that would not be conducive to touch typing? I cannot seem to change my 45 years of touch typing experience to accomadate this major change.  It makes no sense.  Is anyone else having this issue and what if anything can be done about it?

Hi, I would be interested in buying an Ideapad 520S-14IKB, but I have a tiny keyboard issue! As I'm based in Italy, I'd buy one with an Italian keyboard, but I'd really like to replace it with an US one. So, the question is easy: is it possible to do it? And if it is, where can I buy the keyboard, how expensive would it be and how can I install it? Thanks!
