Preferred Solution: windows update not working (win 7 home basic)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Ash,
Nothing wrong in that report at all.

The server referal error points towards a lack of access to it, is it your ISP's?, have you reset your ssid and password.

The Update error, service not started is spp??

For starters can you run the Windows update Troubleshooter, try updating again.

if that fails can you run/post the results from this link,
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012

and from the Windows update log the last day entries

I have a laptop which has those system properties below:

-Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3500+ 1.80 GHz
-383 MB RAM
-Windows Vista Home Basic 32 Bit

The laptop is came from Germany. So it had Windows Vista Home Basic 32 Bit in Germany. After I got this laptop, I started to use Windows XP on it. But yesterday I installed Vista Home Basic from its original DVD and I changed its language from Germany to Turkish by using a software named "Vistalizator". The operating system is Turkish now. (Not BIOS and some of characters in command line don't appear right but it's OK.) I know that only Ultimate is available for installing language packs but I could install language packs on my Home Basic, too. Anyway, after installation everything was fine till this morning. When I try to launch Windows Update, I almost can't see anything. It just looks like below:

Is it about trying to install a language pack on Home Basic or an update that will allow to fix Windows Update? Because while no problems occured, I was prompted to install a new version of Windows Update but I was failed to do that.

I hope I can get help. I'm searching for hours but for now I got nothing.

A:Windows Update Trouble on Vista Home Basic

I beleive you need the latest version of the windows update agent for the language pack you have installed. More information here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104

Hello probably a rootkit. Can you run this? Please download mbr.exe and save it to the root directory, usually C:\ <- (Important!).Go to Start > Run and type: cmd.exepress Ok.At the command prompt type: c:\mbr.exe >>"C:\mbr.log"press Enter. The process is automatic...a black DOS window will open and quickly disappear. This is normal.A log file named mbr.log will be created and saved to the root of the system drive (usually C:\).Copy and paste the results of the mbr.log in your next reply. If you have a problem using the command prompt, you can just double-click on mbr.exe to run the tool. For the Explorer issue use How to automatically repair Windows Vista using Startup Repair

Ever since I installed Vista Home Basic in my PC, my Mic (normal wired type) does not work. It was working perfectly earlier with Windows98. The connected Mic is not recognised at all under Sound/Recording - it says "No audio devices are installed" ("Show Disabled/Disconnected Devices" - both are checked).

I understand many have faced this problem and have solved it by updating the correct Sound Card Driver for Vista. If this is indeed true, can someone help me as to how to do it?

Thanks in advance!

HI All

I had to buy a new laptop begining of last month and it cam with Vista Home Basic installed, this did not really bother me but i have now spent the last week or so trying to get windows update to work but it keeps failing.

when i open windows updater it searches for the required updates and gives me the list, when i press i tell it to install the update it fails, it does not download it at all.

I have turned off my firewall, my anti virus and still nothing happens.

when it fails it gives me an error code which is 80246008, when i press the get help link and select the error code it gives me a list of possible things and how to sort them, 1 of which is that "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" needs to be turned on in 'services' but when i tell it to start it says that it can not be started and says "error 2 the system can not find the file specified"

does anybody have any ideas?

cheers in advance

Hi Computer Angels,

I got into troubles, though, I do not visit risky sites, etc.

I already had update problems a year ago. Then, we were able to fix it. This time, nothing worked, what I learned that time.
It looks difficult for me. I'd try "Clean Install", or "Upgrade" to Premium, but I am not sure whether any of these would solve my problem, and I do not want to lose my installed applications. On the top, it is a Toshiba Satellite P 200 laptop, with preinstalled OS, so I do not have a Vista DVD, only a Toshiba Recovery Disk, which cannot solve the problem.

I put together a Word document as attachment,
 Update_problem.doc   1.93MB
0 downloads which describes my current problem, with already tried measures, log files, scan results, etc. I hope this is helpful for the first, and I will get help.

Hoping in last resource, regards,

One of my computers runs Vista Home Basic. For convenience, I had it set to automatically run Windows Update. I've got cable Internet connection.

A few weeks ago, I started to get VERY SLOW response time on the web on this computer. My older computer runs XP, and wasn't effected. I use both Firefox and IE. I'd click on a link to a website, and wait 30seconds to 1 minute or more for the site to come up. All the non-internet applications I use seemed to work properly.

I reloaded software, defragged, swapped out memory (I have 1gb RAM), swapped network connections (both computers are hard wired to the Internet through a router), etc. to no avail.

Then, I decided to do a System Restore to a restore point from about 2 weeks earlier. VOILA! Worked fine. However, I didn't turn off the automatic Windows Update. As soon as it updated, I had the same problem, so I re-restored and turned off Automatic Updates.

Anybody else have this problem? Have any idea which of the many updates may be giving me the problem? I don't mind doing updates manually, but I really don't want to go thru the process of loading the updates one-by-one to determine which one is giving me the problem. That would take like forever. Whether I do the updates automatically or manually doesn't matter to me, but I do want to keep the operating system updated.

Thanks,

Jim

Windows Vista Home Basic OEMAct Everex C7-M Processor

I ran startup repair a long while ago when it crashed and set up a whole new account. I thought I had lost everything but somehow I still had my old files on the older account. I had (before the crash) AVG Free 9.0 and it was being silly when I tried to install it again. I'm not really sure what happened there. But anyhow I needed to update it all over again and get SP1 and SP2, but when I tried to do the Automatic Updates it kept failing.
Finally it gave me the BSOD and wouldn't start up under any mode (Safe Mode etc.). I have done the memtest86 and it passed, and then I also tried the recovery disk I have from Everex and it won't work. It attempts to load and when it finishes during the "Windows is loading files" stage it blue screen's again. I don't know where to go from here to get this thing to start up! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi
Please advice on the performance comparison between
- Windows 7 Home Basic versus
- Windows 7 Home Premium
assuming if both uses the same 8GB RAM.

Just a hearsay...that Windows 7 Home Basic is lagging behind Windows 7 Home Premium in terms of performance assuming if both uses the same 8GB RAM. Please confirm whether this is true or not.

By the way, how to activate the Windows Aero in Windows 7 Basic???

A:Performance comparison btw. Windows 7 Home Basic versus Home Premium

Hello cheesum and welcome to Seven Forums.

Last question first. This tutorial may help enable Aero. Please note that there is no way to enable transparency on Windows Home Basic.

Aero - Enable in Unsupported Editions of Windows 7

As far as performance, I have not been able to find any specific "speed" tests to say one way or the other.

Difference Between Windows 7 Home Basic and Home Premium | Difference Between | Windows 7 Home Basic vs Home Premium

But if Basic and Home Premium are run on two identical machines (not just identical RAM, but also identical hard drive/hard drive speed, identical CPU, identical programs and apps installed, etc) I would give a very slight performance advantage to Basic simply because it doesn't have the same amount of features that Home Premium has. Fewer features to load usually equals faster performance. But I think any performance advantage would be so slight it wouldn't make any appreciable difference.

I did find some comments comparing Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.

performance difference 7 home premium vs. 7 professional? - Microsoft Community

Of course, others may completely disagree with my thoughts and that's cool. Healthy discussion and debate is welcomed.

I have recently purchased a new Acer Aspire 5535 laptop. It has Windows Vista Home Premium (WVHP) installed.

The computer came with a number of programs that I am not interested in having on my system. In addition, I was not provided a restore disc. I do own a copy of Windows Vista Home Basic (WVHB).

I would like to keep WVHP as I appear to be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 7 . . . but I would like to reinstall to get rid of all these worthless programs. Can I use a WVHB disc with my new WVHP product key?

Could I install WVHB with the WVHB product key, then use the WVHP key supplied by Acer to upgrade?

Thanks for your time in answering my question. I hope it isn't unclear.

Thanks,

Jeremy

I believe that if you install with the Basic disc the process will offer you a choice

On searching the internet I found a site http://www.amset.info/windows/auto-updates.asp with 3 batch files which restore, repair and reinstall the Windows Automatic Update system. On running the re-install batch file Windows Update was uninstalled as it did not appear in Windows Services (Services.msc) list. I ran the re-install batch file again. Windows Automatic Update was re-installed and started as it now showed in Services.msc list as started. On clicking on Windows Automatic Updates icon the form opened up showing Automatic Download selected for 17:00 hrs each day. My PC now shut down properly and thus powered down automatically. I could now open up the Windows Update home page and run an analysis of what patches need to be downloaded. On trying to load and install the patches a dialog box came up saying downloading updates comprising a total size of about 7MB. I have 2mb broadband so the process should be quick. After about 20mins nothing appeared to be happening and the dialog box still looked the same. Thus I shut... Read more

Hi all

Done a fresh install of Vista Home Premium SP2 on an old Sony Vaio laptop.  After activation I just can't get Windows Update to download anything apart from the latest Windows Update Client There's no error message, just "checking for updates" constantly.   It's been running for over 24 hours now with no progress.

Considering this is a fresh install - any ideas?

Cheers!

UPDATE

For anyone that's interested the updates have now arrived after almost three full days of checking for updates.  It appears my new ISP gives piss poor connection speeds.

Hi,

I have a system that was having problems so I completely reinstalled Windows XP. I started with Pro and then tried Home and the same problem occurs in both.

This is a completely clean install from a valid XP home disk. When I click on Windows Update, It displays a page, then when it tries to load http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?lnkid=209191 it comes back with "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". If I click on Diagnose Connection Problems it comes up with two errors, 12031 and 12029.

All other web pages look ok both http and https. It is running IE 8 and service pack 3.

I have so far:

Ran Hitman Pro - no errors (some tracking cookies)
Malwarebytes - no errors
sfc /scannow - no errors
ComboFix
Checked the settings in Internet Options - no proxy is checked, added TLS 1.0 to the advanced security
Reset winsock
Went through a bunch of steps to rebuild the Windows Update, re-registered all the necessary programs etc.

Has anyone else gone through this? I just want to make sure I have all of the updates for XP on this machine. Last night, overnight the system downloaded and updated 161 updates.

Thanks.

Is SP1A installed?  SP2? SP3?

What version of Internet Explorer is installed?

If SPfA is installed, you can skip installing SP2 and just install SP3.

I would be surprised if Windows Update works correctly with any version but IE 8.

I have had this HP G62 laptop for almost four years. It has always had Windows 7 Home Basic on it. I had to format my hard drive a few weeks ago due to viruses corrupting my graphics (OpenGL), so I did this and reinstalled Windows 7 Home Basic.

Before I formatted my hard drive, I used a program to obtain my Product Key for Microsoft Office and I also made a note of the Windows Product Key which was different to the one on the Certificate Of Authenticity on the bottom of the laptop. I downloaded an ISO of Windows 7 (which apparently is legal) and put it onto a flash drive and used it to reinstall Windows. I don't remember entering the Product Key when installing, so cannot confirm this.

I received a message saying that the Windows is not genuine and I must activate it. I tried to do that using the Product Key on the COA and it says that the product key will not work with this edition of Windows. The sticker on the bottom of my laptop says it is for Windows 7 Home Premium, but my laptop came to me with Home Basic.

I also tried the Product Key that I obtained from the program before formatting and this key gives me a message saying "The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required license." (Error Code 0xC004F063)

Please could you assist me, here is the MGADiag report.

From the looks of it you did a repair/reinstall using a Retail disk.

If the Key on your machine is for Windows 7 Home Premium - then that is what the machine is licensed for (and why anyone would wish to downgrade it to Home Basic is rather beyond me) - and you need to upgrade to the Home Premium install to get the Key to work. From what I can see of the Spec for the machine, the default is Home Premium.

From where did you purchase this?

Due to OS problem I formated my ''C" drive, where i can get windows 7 Home Basic OS CD for OS instalation in my laptop.I have Product Key too.I asked the Microsoft supported team, but they said contact your Laptop manufacturer for recovery CD. So please let me know the process to get CD.TySrinivas

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! Before formatting the C drive, did you have a Windows OEM version - Windows preinstalled by HP with your computer. When you bought the computer initially, did it have Win 7 preinstalled OR you installed WIndows later ? If you have a product key, you can try to download WIndows 7 installational ISO image from Microsoft >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7 Then, burn the image to a DVD and use to install Win 7.Post successful WIn 7 installation, you can download and use HP Supprot Assistant to get the latest updates from HP such as drivers updates.  Let me know if this works for you.

You need to change the Product Key to the oneon the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the batterycompartment), using the Change ProductKey link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need toactivate by phone.

There is a problem with a partitioning process. Firstly, I've installed Acronis Disk Director Suite and in manual mode I've started to create a new partition. My notebook had 3 partitions: main partition of ~300Gb with Windows installed, unknown "System" partition with "boot" flag of ~1.5Gb and recovery partition of ~8Gb. So I tried to create a new partition using the free space from the first one. After rebooting Acronis started to work, created a new partition and started to replace "HDDRECOVERY" partition. During this process, notebook had been shutdown (it was plugged into the socket) and after turning on, I noticed the next: after turning on and booting BIOS, the laptop is going to reboot again and again and again. Any ideas? P.S.: sorry for the very muddled description

Hi,

I have recently bought LENOVO Z560 with pre-installed 32-bit Windows 7 Home Basic.

I want to know:
1) How can I upgrade to 64 bit Home Basic
2) How can I know/ get the PRODUCT KEY of my pre-installed 32 bit Home Basic
3) Do I need to pay extra amount if I upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit (as, I have heard that if I purchase, I will get 32 and 64 bit OS in a single pack only)
4) Will my existing set of drivers work fine with 64 bit Home Basic. If not, from where can I get the drivers

Thanks In Advance.
