hdd, processor or RAM from laptop usable in my desktop or newer laptop

Q: hdd, processor or RAM from laptop usable in my desktop or newer laptop

I just finished disassembling my first laptop ever which had a broken screen due to a drunken neighbor and am wondering if / what I can use the acquired parts for? This is the laptop that I disemboweled:

Samsung NP300E5A-A01UB Review & Rating | PCMag.com

which has a better processor than the current, newer one that I am using. I also recently purchased a desktop but I definitely need to increase the size of the hdd and am wondering if the laptop hdd can be used with the desktop? I have attached pictures of what I have pulled out of the Samsung. I look forward to your responses and really appreciate the helpful knowledge and / or advice. Thank you!

(I will attach the pictures right after this post. I took them on my phone and will upload from the win7 forums app. Am currently on laptop)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Took my laptop to the shop and according to them, the hard drive has died. I have a hard drive from my previous laptop that I'd like to see if is compatible with my current one. Are most laptop hard drives fairly universal in general? The old computer was an Acer that ran Windows 98, current is an IBM Thinkpad T43 on Windows XP.

Reading info directly from the hard drive itself, it is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7, 160 Gbytes, Model Number ST3160023AS.

I'd be glad to provide any other info if needed.

I have received my 3656 i was so excited with the specs but did not know about the APU. Traditionally APUs have been paired with video cards in their class. After researching the 8800p APU, I thought well hey dell built a little power house. The APU when used in a Laptop is designed to operate at 15w to save battery up to 35 watts of power TDP and is capable of crossfire with 360M laptop discrete video card. I was disappointed, Dell has chosen to keep the TDP at 15w under utilizing APU and no Crossfire with R9 360 which would have boosted the video performance of the machine. To call this a Gamer Desktop is a joke. I did not expect XPS performance out of an AMD gaming computer. I did expect fully utilized hardware that was designed to work well together. What happened?

A:New Inspiron 3656 Desktop AMD, Why a Laptop Processor?

Probably because of heating issues. The fan and sink on the processor is very small compared to desktop processors. Still, it's disappointing to see there is virtually no reason to put this particular APU in this rig with a crippled frequency clock rating.

Hello all - first time poster on this forum.

I have a bust up fairly old Intel Celeron 600mhz laptop which could do with a new case/shell (not a bag, it needs the equivalent of a new desktop tower) but I don't know where to find one. I believe this is just a clone of similar laptops made around the same time and the model number is 6133. I was wondering if anybody knew somewhere I could purchase replacement shells/cases and if they stocked a case for this computer.

Everything on the laptop works fine except for a dodgy monitor cable (which would be fixed by moving everything into the new shell) so I don't intend to sell it for parts. I'm also quite experienced in fiddling with computers (my dad's a PC engineer so I've picked up quite a bit from him) and he is willing to help me get this laptop into tip top condition again.

I was also wondering if it would be possible to upgrade the motherboard and processor. At the moment it's a 600mhz intel celeron but I'd rather go with an AMD athlon of some sort as I believe them to be generally better. If anybody knows where I can purchase laptop motherboards to fit certain needs any help there would be gladly appreciated (am looking for a socket A motherboard). If the upgrade to Athlon is not possible I would like to know what the upgradability of my current motherboard is - I shall be looking inside the laptop within the next few days and can probably provide a number for it.

Howdy and welcome to the Forum.

Have you contacted the Manufacturer regarding replacement parts? That's where I would start.

BUT to be honest, although you do not give all the specs of the PC, I'd be willing to bet that you could replace the whole thing with a new laptop cheaper than replacing parts like case, MOBO, Processor, RAM, and HD !!!

So unless there is some "sentimental value", like the case broke stopping a bullet shot at you by terrorists...I'd shop for a new unit.

Hmm, I can't find any info for that unit, if it is newer you might as well RMA it and get it fixed under warranty.

My experience is once a lappy refuses to turn on about the only things you can do are

1. Try a different power supply
2. Unplug unit, remove battery, remove all pcmcia cards and open it up and remove the internal cmos battery then pray.

Now the laptop has two OS systems installed and it wont boot. It will load to the MS screen and will not go to the windows login screen. Is there anything I can do manually to remove the system? I have a newer dell studio 1537 and lately it has been blue screening. It showed an irq not less or equal 0xa error and would restart. It would then go to its startup repair utility and restore itself back in time some distance. Then it would start and want to get updates and bring itself back to current. Then it would run for a while (maybe a day or so) and go through this all over again. When windows started,I ran Malwarebytes and it found the display properties set to not be changed, otherwise it found no malware or virus's.

I then downloaded and ran the windows debugging tools to analyze the dump file and it said that the problem was probably caused by the ntoskrnl.exe.

How do I repair this? Ntoskrnl seems to be a major windows file. If I reinstall,I feel that this will come back again.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

A:Newer dell laptop won't start

ntoskrnl.exe is a critical process in the boot-up cycle of your computer although should never appear in WinTasks whilst under normal circumstances Note: ntoskrnl.exe can be altered by the w32.bolzano and variants. If this process appears in WinTasks, please update your virus definitions immediately and do a virus scan.

Also, Download CCleaner from my sig, do a registry scan.

Last week my laptop was hit with malware. It created quite a mess. I took it down to the computer geeks and they removed it and brought me back up and running. Problem is this: There is a program that was on there written in Foxbase which is now gone. However, I still have my older computer whose monitor died twice which still has the program on it. The older computer runs XP and the Newer one runs Windows 7. My hope was to plug in the old laptop hoping the newer one would recognize it as a removable hardware device which would allow me to read and then copy the program I need. I do have the programs uploaded off site which would have all the files that I need to run the program. If this is not a good way to go would another option be to create a directory which I could download everything to? I have never had to do this and I have been computing since 1986. thank you for any help you can give.

Hi mates,

I have an Lenovo Thinkpad T450S running Windows 10.( i5 broadwell, 12gb ram, ssd evo 850 samsung)

I need to run Windows XP and tryied to install but failed..

Maybe my logic is incorrect or i get wrong something. The notebook don.t have sata operation mode in BIOS.

Is there someone who can explain or give an ideea/ advice in installing Dual Boot on this newer laptop WIndows XP ? (i don.t want Virtual Machine, is useless for me).

Is pretty urgent.
Thank you.

A:Need help/advice - install Windows XP newer laptop

Hello

You are taking me back down memory lane! I seem to remember that XP did not have the built in SATA drivers and you needed to install them along with XP. To do this there was a special option (F6) that allowed you to insert a SATA driver disc into a floppy drive (which we used back then). However, all this is irrelevant if the laptop BIOS does not support SATA compatibility mode and so it may be impossible to dual boot the two operating systems.

There is a big thread on this topic here: Windows 10 & XP dual boot. Best way?

Hi, I don't know how it "worked" in the first place. Anyway, sooner or later it would stop due to Windows licensing. You can still use the HDD from the Toshiba but please format it and install new Windows (7, 8/8.1 or 10) on your HP machine. Regards.

Newer HP Envy 17t laptop purchased new in Apr 2015. Worked fine until Jan 2017, then plugged in power adapter and no response. Unplugged adapter and tried booting with battery only, nothing. Accomplished the hard reset attempt and still nothing.Took laptop to Geek Squad (Best Buy) authorized HP repair facility for diagnosis Jan 2017. Sent to repair facility by them January, called me in Feb 2017 and advised needed new motherboard and hard drive and parts ordered.Received a call from them yesterday Mar 2017 that my laptop being returned unrepaired as a replacement motherboard is not available... As it is out of HP manufacturers one year warranty it seems as if I am lost.I have a hard time believing I just paid $1,400 to HP for a new 17" top of the line laptop one and half years ago, no repairs or parts are available it, and I am just "stuck" with an expensive and useless piece of electronics. Can this be the case HP? If so, may have to contact the CA Dept of Consumer Affairs and file a complaint..even f the manufacturers warranty is expired six months ago, there still has to be an implied warranty of merchantability on a new item. How can you help me HP? Got any suggestions? Thanks.

A:Newer laptop wont boot, no power.

We are not going to get into the warranty thing as this Forum is end user to end user support, not official HP warranty claims or after-warranty claims.  I did strike out trying to find the motherboard at any of the parts supply houses I usually use however, there are shops that can rework a motherboard to factory specs by replacing dead chips for a fairly reasonable cost: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Envy-M7-K010DX-Motherboard-773128-501-763721-501-763718-501-Repair-Servic... The title of the auction speaks of another model but uses same motherboard.  You asked for suggestions and there you have one.

Hello,

I have an old laptop, with an Intel Pentium T4400, and this machine is used mainly for web surfing and minimal stuff like that. But what's annoying is that it's not running as smooth as for example my new machine with core i5. Is there a way to make it run smoother / faster? like over clocking it a bit so it will be safe? or any other tweaks?

*When I say smooth I don't mean like running heavy applications, I am talking about: for example that the mouse movement on desktop will be smoother etc.

It has 3GB RAM as well. Intel GMA graphics or something like that

Thanks!

A:Making an old laptop run smoother like with newer CPUs?

Dor a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 with the Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit that you already have.

If you follow it properly (Specially the step 12) it will give you the maximum performance that is possible with your computer.

Overclocking makes the games etc run faster, but it does not have a very positive bearing on jobs like mouse movement. It depends on the mouse. USB mouse works smoother than PS/2, a little bit.

Working on an HP G61 laptop with an AMD Sempron M100 (2.00 GHz), a 64-bit processor, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
The computer properties show 4.00GB RAM installed, but only 3.75GB usable.
There is also an integrated graphics card, "AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon 4200."

Just checking out this explanation I found:
Why Computer Shows Less RAM than InstalledWhy Computer Shows Less RAM than Installed
This is because your computer does not have a dedicated graphics card.

You are using a integrated graphics card built on motherboard which shares memory from the RAM installed.

They can share from 1 MB to 256 MB.

If your computer shows around 1-200 MB less than the RAM installed - its okay, anything more your RAM is not installed properly / working. Is that right?

A:HP Laptop AMDx64: 4GB RAM but only 3.75 usable?

That would be 100% correct.

Hi,

Wasn't sure if this should go here or in the security area. My company has given me a year-old Dell Latitude that they were going to throw out because it got a virus. However, the laptop has all of their network security stuff on it, so I can't even get past the CTRL + ALT + DELETE screen. I mean I can't get in and do anything on this computer. I know I have to buy a new hard drive and probably reinstall Windows 7, but how do I know that this will get rid of everything and give me a clean slate? I don't have accesss to the administrator password, either.

Thanks.

If you have access to a installation disc for the operating system I would suggest wiping the hdd and start with a fresh installation. Wiping the hdd will overwrite everything on the hdd, including infections. You can use a program like DBAN to completely overwrite the hdd.

I've cheked out on the manufacturers website about RAM upgrades to the x30 thinkpad and it says:

* Uses PC133 3.3V 144 pin SoDIMM memory, no support for parity/ECC
* Total of 2 memory slot, 1 slot prepopulated with either 64MB or 128MB depending on model
* Supports up to two 512 MB SDRAM SO DIMMs
* Supports maximum memory up to 1GB

But can i use DDR RAM? I'm aware it won't wn't work in dual channel but will it actually work?
Also the latency of RAM (for example 2.5 when runnig at pc2100) would drop if running at a lower speed (say pc133), wouldn't it?

I turn on.
After about 30 seconds, I can 'use'.
I say 'use' - I can try to open a program - it will open very very slowly and sluggishly and take about a minute (normally opens in a second or 2).

I've looked at system resources and have sat there staring and monitoring. CPU usage will die down after about 2 minutes. But then disk usage will stay at a constant 99% for 5+ minutes (from start). Finally when it starts going down... the computer is then 'fully usable' and at its normal state.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

A:Why does laptop take a full 5+ minutes to become 'usable'?

whats in the startup programs

when did this start - have you installed anything recently or windows update?

anything plugged into the machine at all ?

may be worth a disk check scan and an sfc scan - have you tried those

also maybe worth a malware scan
Please note the following:

I would suggest running some of the more common malware removal tools - this is NOT the full cleaning process, However, often the following may resolve some of the very common malware.

The following programs will remove the most common malware and so at the end of the process , the PC maybe clean. If not , then we need to move to the virus/malware forum for a specialist to review.
Do NOT install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners unless told to do so.
I would advise backing up all your important documents, personal data files and photos to an externl source DVD/CD or external hard drive.
Do not back up any Applications (programs). These should be re-installed from the original source CD(s) or website(s).
Be sure to follow the directions and run tools/scans in the order listed.
If you are getting any support on this issue from any other forum, please advise, as a) this wastes a lot of time and b) can cause issues on the PC as we do not know what else is being suggested.

I decided to give my laptop (Acer 5535) an upgrade in RAM so I got a 2GB stick to bring the total amount of RAM to 4Gb. But now it seems that there only seems to be 3.75GB of the RAM usable. I know that the integrated graphics takes some of the RAM, but this laptop has the ATI HD 3200 graphics, which according to my dxdiag takes up 1916Mb (1.87Gb) [512MB according to notebookcheck.net].

I read somewhere that perhaps it's my hardware or chipset that limits the usable, but since I couldn't find anything on my computer's hardware that does so (the instruction manual indicates the laptop can be upgraded to a max of 4GB memory.

So I was wondering if there is any way to allow my computer to utilize all 4GB, or is it simply the limitation of my laptop's hardware.

Heh.. Kinda new to this forum so yeah.
Kinda getting a bit desperate about this.

I've had a Gateway NV53A Laptop for about a year and a few months. No problems with it. Only problem I've found so far? It's REALLY slow. I mean on everything. Opening something, closing, shutting down, everything. The main thing was that it was slow on simple gaming even though reviews have stated it could handle it.

So, I found that the RAM Memory that came with the laptop, was only 3 Gigs! DDR3 Memory RAM.
So I searched around the internet and finally on crucial.com I found a compatible 8 Gigs of 2 sticks (4 Gigs each.) Of course after seeing this, I ordered them.
Awhile ago they came in and I installed them, all perfect, etc.
I checked on "My Computer's Properties" and it said 8 Gigs and next to it, only 3! Why is that?

Is there a way to fix this so I can at least use more than 6? I just want to get the full potential out of the two sticks. It also says on the crucial site that this laptop has the max memory of 8 gigabytes...

Umm... not exactly sure about the information I have to put up here for details but..

I read alot of forums and it says to change the dram voltage but I have no idea how to do this. The BIOS that comes with this laptop is also very basic and does not allow customization of specific settings.

Any tips or information would be greatly appreciated.

Type msconfig in search. Make sure the max memory is UNchecked.

Hello everyone. I have recently bought a laptop, samsung R525.
Specs: AMD Phenom II x4 N970/ 6 gb ram DDR3 / 640 gb HDD/ 1 gb dedicated Radeon 6630M + Radeon 4250 onboard / win 7 x64.
You can also look here.

So, all is prefect in this rig except phys. memory, in system properties it says 6 gb installed and (1.5 usable). There are two slots, one has in it 2 gb of ram, another-4gb.
It looks like only 2 gb's stick is used, because 1.5 is usable, other 512 mb are shared with onboard gpu. Where are the other 4 gb is a mystery. Resource monitor shows 4 gb reserved by hardware, but BIOS sees all 6 installed, as well as memtest. I actually tried everything, reinstall ram (didnt swap though), looked at system config where it was unchecked in memory section, pagefile is okay, system is 64x, BIOS doesnt have mem remap feature, but it's a modern BIOS so I guess it's enabled per default. So I'm kinda lost and I want customer support contacted as a last resort. What should I do? update BIOS? or try to change those sticks, but then they ll be turned by side, will it work? I searched hell a lot on that ram topic but nothing was helpful. Thank you and looking forward for your advices.

Hi there , I have a question. Can my laptop HP Pavilion dv6 - 1425ec run on  : IntelŪ Core?2 Duo T9900 3.06-GHz with 6-MB L2 cache and 1066-MHz front side bus (FSB)  ? My laptop have stock processor :  Intel PentiumŪ Dual-Core T4300 2.10-GHz with 1-MB L2 cache and 800-MHz FSB(I found it on "HP Pavilion dv6 Entertainment PC Maintenance and Service Guide", stock OS : Win7 Home Premium 64-bit) Socket is same . Is BIOS supporting new processor ? (ver. of BIOS -  T.43) And how many GB (and max. frequency of each one) of DDR3 RAM support this laptop ? (Sorry for bad English , hope you will understand)

A:Will it run on a newer processor ?

Here is your Service Manual: Manual The T9900 is listed as a compatible processor. Further, there is only one chipset listed the PM45 and GM45, depending on if you have dedicated or integrated video but in either case will support T9900.  The issue is that the Manual says DDR2 memory. I know from experience however that somewhere in the dv6-1000 series production run they started using DDR3. Check your modules. Either way (DDR2 or DDR3) the maximum memory is going to be 8 gigs (2 x 4) and if it is DDR3 it is DDR3-1066.  4 gig modules of DDR2 are crazy expensive...well over $100US for a pair. I actually have a Lenovo laptop with this chipset and a T9900 and 8 gigs DDR2 and I have to say it does not seem to have been improved much by the increase from 4 to 8 gigs of RAM.  Post back if you need any more help.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

When I uncheck "maximum memory" on "Boot advanced options" it defaults back to "0" maximum memory after re-boot and will not save as 8096mb RAM. Have tried other fixes via command prompt, but all to no avail. Anyone any ideas how I can get my 5.07gig RAm back in use????

Okay I have sort of a series of related questions about this let me start by explaining the situation:

My laptop is fried and I've pretty much given up hope trying to fix it. I know it's a hardware issue and I tried disassembling/reassembling it to no avail. At this point I'll be happy if I can recover the files from the HD assuming it's not the HD that is faulty in the first place.

So here are my questions. I already searched the forums here and had one of these partially answered but I need a bit more info. First, as I understand it it would be possible to connect the laptop's HD to my desktop but I would need an adapter to do it right? If I had this adapter, would it be possible to run the laptop HD like an external or would I have to boot directly into it to get the files? My tech knowledge is only mediocre here and I don't know exactly how the hardware all works together.

Second, and this would be most convenient if it works because I could skip the adapter, I want to know if it would work to simply swap the laptop's HD with a different, fully functioning laptop and move the files onto an external HD from there, assuming both laptops use the same connector type (I believe they do both use the same size SATA drives). Again this is really just a question of whether or not the new laptop's hardware would be compatible with the old drive and that there wouldn't be any time consuming formats involved or any data loss or anythi... A:Laptop HD file transfer to desktop or another laptop

Better and much shorter question: What is the best way to move files from the hard disk of a failed laptop to another computer?

Remove the hard disk from the failed laptop. If it is SATA, as you state, take it to any desktop computer with SATA connectors. Connect it there as a secondary drive and burn your files to a DVD.

Or, you could get an external drive enclosure (laptop size), place the drive inside that and connect it to any USB port.

If the old drive is bad/unreadable, none of your or my solutions will help. In that case, you'll have to send it and a lot of your money to a specialist.

I've got two computers living in the same workgroup that I am trying to connect and share files across.

1) Desktop - Vista Home Premium.
2) Laptop - XP Pro.

Computer #2 can see #1 and it's shared folders. However, #1 cannot see #2's shared folders nor see that computer in its workgroup or network.

I believe the problem resides on computer #2, as prior to computer #1 I had a different desktop config that had the same problem.

I am able to ping #2 by name and IP address.
I have disabled the firewalls on both computers.
File sharing is enabled for both computers.

Appreciate any help on the matter!

Ok first of all thanks to anyone who reads this and I hope I am being as clear as possible.

My desktop computer recently just went all blank white screen on me last night and since I have no idea what to do with it to fix it, I just bought a new laptop. I have a DSL modem from Verizon with only one cable so before I used to just remove it from the desktop and plug it into my other laptop to use the internet. I did this last night with the new laptop as well, and this morning I tried to connect to the internet on the new laptop and it said could not connect to the internet, no matter what website I tried, I decided to try plugging the DSL line into the OLD laptop to see if it was the internet, but it works on the old laptop just fine, and was working on the new laptop yesterday just fine. Can someone please help me? I do not understand why the old laptop works 100% perfectly and never had a virus, but every new computer I get seems to be "crap" (pardon my language) Any thoughts????

A:DSL cable works for desktop and laptop but not the new laptop ;\

Connect to the old laptop and get the Internet working and connected, then I'd like to see this.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

After that, connect to the new laptop, reboot the laptop and then post the same thing from the new laptop.

I couldn't make an image and the dell laptop says its windows vista but it runs XP

But here's the thing its only running windows XP
Does anyone have an suggestions ??

A:Im trying to put a newer version of windows on my dell laptop running windows xp

Compared to XP, Vista is junk. In any case Vista is no longer going to be supported with Security Updates after April of next year so you are dealing with the same problem of an unsupported OS.

There is a registry hack to allow XP to receive security updates but it is not recommended using it.

If you do not want XP on the computer consider installing a small linux distro. The computer came with 512MB of RAM according to the Specs. That is pushing it for XP let alone Vista. I doubt you would have a good experience with Vista on the D830 and perhaps that is why somebody installed XP.

How much RAM is listed on the Dell?

Hello, what is your Operating System> Let's start with a scan log. Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drive... Hello there!

I have a laptop that I want to make faster (be able to play game like league of legends and team fortress 2 better).

I have a HP Pavilion g7 notebook PC with windows 8. My current processor is a AMD A4-4300M APU with radeon HD graphics (2 CPU'S) ~2.5GHz.
I have a 4096MB RAM memory.

I was wondering if I could buy a better processor or if my processor is stuck to my motherboard. If so, what processor can I buy to make it faster and how do I install it? I have about 150 euros available so price doesn't really matter.

Thanks in advance!

A:New processor for my laptop

The only hardware upgrade option you have is to add more RAM, but that likely won't improve your gaming experience.

If you want to play hard-core games in a laptop, you need to buy one that's intended for that purpose and not for normal use.

I have a latitude that has an Intel Centrino 2 2.8GHz processor and have noticed that under the task manager, there is only 1 graph for processors and not 2 like in the HP DV9000 my mate has. I have WinXP on my Latitude and am of the opinion that only 1 processor is in use. Is there any way I can correct this without performing an uninstall? I do not have the key for my XP as my dvds were stolen.

HELP!!!!!!!

You should be able to create Recovery DVDs from the HP recovery Manager - although on HP I suspect they only allow you to do this once
I would call HP Support to get a new set or how to crrate new ones - you may well need these later in the life of the machine.

Exact Model of the Machine -

Goto
Start
Control Panel
System
Hardware Tab
Device Manager
Under processors - How many listed

post back the results

I am looking at purchasing a new Lenovo laptop for my architecture class and I dont know enough about processors. The 2 choices Lenovo gives me are 1. Intel core 2 Quad Core Extreme Processor QX9300 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 12MBL2) or 2. Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor X9100 (3.06GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2) We will be doing a lot of rendering and the upperclassmen constanly whine about extremely long rendering waits. I plan on using 6GB SDRAM and 2 320GB hard drives with the graphic being NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M 128-core CUDA parallel 1GB (dedicated). Please explain to me your choice, and with your answer the processor terminology so that I can better understand. Thank you so much for your help. You guys on here always are very helpful!
