Solved: help! norton anti-virus 2008 cant remove wont let me install another anti-vir

Q: Solved: help! norton anti-virus 2008 cant remove wont let me install another anti-vir

i have uninstalled norton anti-virus 2008 from my computer however it is still coming up in the start menu and loading on startup. i am wondering how i can remove this and other things from my startup? i can not install any other anti-virus until this is removed.

note: i tried removing them from startup once and it keeps telling me i have put it in a specific startup mode. but when i change the mode it still does not work.

i also removed a instance of windows xp from the boot.ini section that i did not need and when i change the mode the other instace comes back up on reboot.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can someone povide me with instruction to completely remove this from the laptop as I can.t find the proper uninstall link to remove it.

A:Solved: Remove Norton Anti-virus from Factory Installion with Vista

You can't find the proper uninstall link because Vista's version of "Add/Remove Programs" is unfamiliar or because the Norton uninstall is just missing? There isn't an "uninstall" link in the Norton Program folder?

It's best to uninstall the normal way (unless, of course, you can't) and then use the Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 I've also seen a Norton rep advise to then Restart and run the Removal tool a 2nd time.

I need some help with recent problems I've been having with my PC. There're pop-ups that keep coming back, and I don't know how to remove it. I've tried scanning with Ad-aware 2007, and I even used my CA anti-spyware and anti-virus but to no avail. So I tried manually removing it. I searched my PC for suspicious files. So I tried removing a bunch of files that may be malicious software like winctl.exe, and boat32. I found the instructions on removing them in this forums after searching for it in google. So I did that, but the pop-ups keep coming back. I tried using hijackthis, but I'm not sure which files to delete. I've tried fixing some files that I think are harmful, but it doesn't seem to help. Can you show me what to fix in my hijackthis log? The pop-ups are an advertisement on CiD something.

Oh, and I don't know why, but I when I check my task manager it says I have 2 iexplore.exe running when I don't coz I usually use firefox. When I end the processes they just come back. Can you help me? Thanks.

According to a story at Washingtonpost.com, the latest definitions for Microsoft's Anti-Spy flags Symantec's Norton Antivirus as a trojan and prompts users to delete essentials of the program. Users who follow the instructions hose their installation of Norton, requiring Windows registry edits and complete removal/reinstallation of Norton.

Microsoft's support forum is filling up with complaints, many from businesses that have been hard hit. This should be a cautionary note about deploying beta products in production environments.

Hi,

When I tried to run NAV2007in the usual way, it first put up a box saying it was missing a file (I did not realise the significance of this message and did not record it). It then said that there was a massive error and needed to be uninstalled and reinstalled.

I first tried to uninstall using the Norton Removal Tool. But this refused to run.

I next tried to uninstall by means of the Contol Panel Add/Remove. This time also it would not work, producing the message "This aplication has requested Runtime to remove it in an unusual way---" and advising me to seek help.

Please advise me how to remove NAV2007. If there is any more information you need to diagnose the problem please let me know.

Many thanks,
Roy Mayo.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix...deleting_1.htmlBy Brian Krebs "Microsoft's Anti-Spyware program is causing troubles for people who also use Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus software; apparently, a recent update to Microsoft's anti-spyware application flags Norton as a password-stealing program and prompts users to remove it. According to several different support threads over at Microsoft's user groups forum, the latest definitions file from Microsoft "(version 5805, 5807) detects Symantec Antivirus files as PWS.Bancos.A (Password Stealer)."When Microsoft Anti-Spyware users remove the flagged Norton file as prompted, Symantec's product gets corrupted and no longer protects the user's machine. The Norton user then has to go through the Windows registry and delete multiple entries (registry editing is always a dicey affair that can quickly hose a system if the user doesn't know what he or she is doing) so that the program can be completely removed and re-installed." I have successfully installed it on the lap top no problem but the desktop ran sophos about 4 years ago and Norton is refusing to install its own anti-virus cos itis detecting Sophos. I uninstalled Sophos Sweep years ago and can find nothing that looks like sophos files anywhere. so ATM I have no anti-virus software so this is kind of urgent. Presumably something is lurking somewhere but I can't find it. Any ideas?

When attempting to install NAV I can not get past the welcome screen. When I click the install button I receive these two errors.(msiexec.exe file is linked to missing export msi.dll:222) and( c:\windows\system\msiexec.exe. A device attached to the system is not functioning). I have been online with Symantec and tried everything they suggested. Their last reply suggested it is a Windows problem and I should contact Microsoft. Well have you ever tried that? I have downloaded and run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. I have deleted and re-installed the Microsoft Windows installer. Still get the same errors. Other than this my system runs fine. Any ideas on how to eliminate these errors will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TSG!
The first thing I would do is have you go to an free online virus scanner and run it on your system just in case you might have the CIH virus onboard or another.
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
After a clean bill of health then Grab your windows CD and if you have Win98 or 98SE go to start run and type in SFC and extract a new copy of msi.dll and place it in C:\Windows\Systems folder.
If you have WinME you will have to got to start run and type in msconfig and use the extract there.
Lastly if you have any antivirus program currently on your system you should use the add-remove program and remove it before you install Norton. AV programs do not like to play together.
Keep us posted as to your progress.

I recently fired up a computer that I haven't used in about 5 months. I knew that the Norton was expired so I had a new 2008 Anti-virus in hand ready to install. It wouldn't, but being Norton, I wasn't surprised. What did shock me is that I cannot open any anti-virus site or Spybot or any site that is related to removing viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.

I can log onto any other site in IE6, including TechGuy. I spent hours on the phone with Norton and they gave up saying I had a virus. I have run Spybot that I already had on my computer, but unfortunately it isn't the latest version. I hate to keep using this computer without any anti-virus protection, but I have no choice at this point.

I read many other posts and saw that everybody seems to include a HJT log so here is mine:

Has anyone else had this problem. Norton Anti-virus randomly tries to install at various times when I'm using my computer. Mostly when I right click a file and try to you the e-mail function.

Of course, I don't have the disc in so it repeatedly fails, but it takes a while to get it to stop popping up.

Is this a virus issue? This is Windows 2000 machine I believe.

Camera Wizard not poping up after removing Total Security/Antivirus Pro_2010 I have a PC with Windows XP SP3 with Avast, SuperAnti-Spyware and MBAM while browsing I got a yellow virus warning (something win32 I believe) from Avast pop up near the bottom tray and within seconds the Total Security pop-ups started. My PC slowed to a stop so I rebooted and saw that Antivirus Pro_2010 had installed itself on my PC. All my Anti Virus programs would not start (ie MBAM) so I ended up following forums to end some processes, delete some .dll files that were known to be malicious and rename the .exe's to get Anti Virus programs to run. I installed and used AVG which found a couple things. Then I used ComboFix, and finally I got MBAM to run which found a good 40+ trojans etc. I believe I got the virus off but I tried to restore to before I got the virus but was unable to. I have since run scans with MBAM and SuperAnti-Spyware which have found nothing. Avast also finds nothing but it has a list of 44 files (mostly in WINDOWS\ folder with the last path part of file doubled) that it is unable to scan: because "The system cannot find the specified path". How to Remove Win 7 Anti-Spyware 2011 (Fake Anti-Virus Infections)

Quote:
If your PC is infected with the Win 7 Anti-Spyware 2011 malware or something similar, you?ve come to the right place, because we?re going to show you how to get rid of it, and free your PC from the awful clutches of this insidious malware (and many others)
Win 7 Anti-Spyware 2011 is just one of many fake antivirus applications like Antivirus Live, Advanced Virus Remover, Internet Security 2010, Security Tool, and others that hold your computer hostage until you pay their ransom money. They tell you that your PC is infected with fake viruses, and prevent you from doing anything to remove them.
This particular virus goes by a lot of names, including XP Antispyware, Win 7 Antispyware, Win 7 Internet Security 2011, Win 7 Guard, Win 7 Security, Vista Internet Security 2011, and many, many others. It?s all the same virus, but renames itself depending on your system and which strain you get infected with.

I currently have Norton Anti-Virus 2001 installed on my computer. It's been a year so it's time to upgrade. I bought a new Norton Anti-Virus 2002 cd. Is it necessary for me to go to add/remove programs in the control panel to remove the 2001 version and then install the 2002 version, or can I just install 2002 without deleleting the old program and have it update 2001? Any help would be appreciated!

I had Norton Anti Virus 2002 on my 98 and I deleted it and than
upgraded my system to XP. Afterwards I could not find my disk for
AV. So I bought a copy of INternet Security. When I load it onto
the system I get Internet Security, but I keep getting a message when I try to intall AV. It says something to the effect of "Anti Virus has files marked for deletion - restart your system and goto add and remove programs after restarting to load Anti Virus. I try this and I get the same message about having marked files for deletion.

What do I need to do to fix this??

P.S. I have already tried the Norton removal tool - which they say cleans out the reg. But this was no help either!!

Help!?!

I uninstalled norton antivirus a couple of days ago, and now I can't reinstall it.
I also removed some programs assosciated with Norton Systemworks, 'Livereg' and "livedefinitions' or something..
Every time my computer boots up now, it says 'NAV AUTO PROTECT- Unable to read the configuration files'

Regarding installing it:
I launch the Norton Systemworks CD installation, it starts installing and when it gets to the Antivirus part of the installation, it stop and says 'please insert the disk: Norton Antivirus'. I am confused because, the Cd is already in the drive.

So I tried installing the contents seperately, the rest of the utilities with antivirus unchecked, and everything installs fine. Afterwards i tryinstalling justAnti-virus and I still get the same msg 'insert the NAV disk'.

I then copied the NAv setup files to my computer, then tried installing from there, then it says ''the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation'
Has spyware, or a virus disabled a registry entry that is disallowing me from installing, or is it something simpler?

PLEASE help.

A:Anti-virus, antispyware,anti-malware, hijack this! should i remove some of them?

There is excellent support here on TechSpot for major infestations.
In the meantime, if you need free software, I would download Avira Antivir, SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, and the free Microsoft Security Essentials. Run full scans with each. If they find evil infestations, remove them, then reboot and rerun the scans one more time.

Hey, I re-installed WindowsXP for someone today and I did not format. I just chose "new installation" so it overwrote everything for the most part. However, the "program files" folders were still all there, that may be where my problem is coming from. Anyway, this person has Norton Anti-virus 2002 and while I'm installing it gets to the point of "registering LU" and I get this first error with an OK button:

Live Update Error
There was a problem trying to register with Live Update. Live Update will not be available for this product.

Then I hit OK and it continues for about 5 seconds and then I get this second error:

Fatal Error
Installation ended prematurely because of an error.

After that, I hit ok and it aborts installation. Looking around in the old norton folder I cannot find any way to uninstall and re-install, should I just delete the norton and symantec folders entirely and try installing?

A:Fatal error while trying to install Norton Anti-virus

Hi XDude,

Norton Anti-virus 2002 is outdated. There is no more support at Symantec, so you can't register LiveUpdate, the utility that downloads and upgrades the virus definitions list.

This is my first post on this site, and I turn to you in desparation!

I'm not sure if I have two problems, or one problem manifesting itself in two different ways, which is why I have combined this post.

I have somehow gained a programme named "Antivirus 2008" which is constantly warning me that I have 688 viruses on my computer. When this initially started, I ran my free copy of AVG. This warned me of the presence of Trojan Horses, but it was unable to remove them. The full version of AVG would, I was assured, sort the problem. In a moment of madness, I then purchased the full AVG8 programme.

On running AVG8 it informed me of the presence of a huge number of trojan horses, and offered to heal them. I accepted that option, and was informed that the trojans had been healed (or maybe it was removed/sent to the vault - to be honest, I'm getting a bit punch drunk now, and I'm not really sure)

Following this, AVG "Resident Shield Alerts" keep popping up every 15-20 seconds warning me of more Trojan horses. When I click "Remove Threats" or "Heal", sometimes I get a warning reply "Some files could not be found." Sometimes I don't. Either way, it doesnt make any difference - the next warning pops up about 20 seconds later. This is true whether I tick the "power user" box, or not.

The exact details given by AVG are :

File Name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ppchcgq1j0elfv.exe
Threat Name: Troja... Read more

Hey guys ... I've searched the forums and done just about everything that I can do so far to no avail and am at my wits end with this thing. So yesterday for no reason, FireFox just decides to close. Fine, no big deal, but then I relaunched and it did it AGAIN a few minutes later. Then I got the lovely Microsoft Security Essentials error message saying that I had a Trojan in Unknown Win32. Of course, I knew that was a fake, so I tried running my Spybot S&D, but it wouldn't load. Double-click, hourglass, nothing. Suddenly, I wasn't able to launch any anti-anything software, wasn't able to get to my regedit, task manager, nor launch a browser. Eventually, in safe mode, I located the Hotfix. exe, removed it, and the error message went away. However, I'm still unable to launch ANY anti-spyware/malware/virus software. In safe mode, I did actually download, register, and install StopZilla, which found 48 objects and removed them. I rebooted and ... yeah, same thing. Currently looking into getting a refund for that piece of fun.Spybot S&D loads in my systray and does the TeaTimer real time thing that it does, but I can't RUN it for scanning. Also, I have the installer for SuperAntiSpyware, but the nifty Double-Click, Hourglass, Done trick happens when I try to launch that for installation in safe mode OR out of it.In FireFox, I'll find a result for something that looks promising, click on it, and suddenly I'll be presented with another website ... I have searched previous threads and have seen solutions that have seemed to work for most people but not for me. I get pop ups informing me that I have spyware and malware and it wants me to buy their software. IE had a toolbar called Internet Security 7.0. There is a little yellow caution sign in system tray that blinks and when I click it takes me to the website. The software is called Ultimate Antivirus 2008 and goes to the website http://www.ultimatesentry.com/?advid=2654. I have scanned with Kaspersky, Norton, Super AntiSpyware, SpyHunter, Malware Bytes, UnHack Me, Spyware Doctor, and SmitFraudFix. UnHack Me got rid of the Internet Security 7.0 toolbar but nothing else. I have scanned in normal and safe mode, the only thing that is found is cookies. Smitfraud fix seems to be the most popular solution but when I clean it starts "cleanmgr.exe" but says Windows cannot find. Also just got a popup saying I am infected by "Spybot @ MXT" Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TSG!
The short answer is, "No You Cannot be without updated definitions!"

Here is an option.....
AVG by Grisoft offers a free antivirus engine.
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Note: You must uninstall Norton before downloading and settig up AVG.

Also make sure you look for Windows updates at least once per week.
You need only download and install Critical\Security updates to patch security holes.

Hi -

I noticed something today and i would like to know if it is "normal".

Background: Pentium II, 400MHz, 256MB Ram, 8 Gig HD (2 Gig free), Win2000. Norton Systemworks, including Anti-virus.

Anyway, i run the system Doctor usually (i know, it uses memory up, but the computer runs well anyway), and this morning after re-booting i noticed that the CPU Meter was constantly in the 75%- 90% range. Always. I didn't have any programs running and was not connected to the internet.

So i checked the task manager (processes) and this (navapsvc.exe) seemed to be pretty active. So i shut down Norton Antivirus and the CPU usage dropped to 5% immediately. I turned it back on, and the CPU usage went back up. And I am not doing a full system scan (that happens every friday night).

Is this normal? The computer seems to be running just fine. No viruses, no spyware. It's a little slow, but then again it's 3.5 years old and i want a new one. But all in all everything is fine.

I guess i could understand if i was downloading something (especially e-mail), but i use dial-up and was not connected to the internet.

Any suggestions or comments. Thanks.

Tom

PS - i should note that the above may have always been the case and i just never noticed so it might not be a "new" condition.
